<p>In line with China's plan to regulate the fast-evolving deep fake technology, the internet regulator in the country has released its first line of approved suppliers.</p>

<p>As per the South China Morning Post report, the white list, that was released by the Cyber Administration of China (CAC) on Tuesday, included names of the owners of 41 algorithms, including major tech giants Tencent, Baidu and Alibaba.</p>

<p>The algorithms were filed in adherence to the Administrative Provisions on Deep Synthesis for Internet Information Service, which came into effect in the month of January this year.</p>

<p>The Administrative Provisions on Deep Synthesis for Internet Information Service took effect on January 10. It controls deepfake technology and services including video, audio, text and images generated by artificial intelligence-based models.</p>

<p>As per the law, deep synthesis providers have to abide by the local laws and respect ethics, and maintain the “correct political direction and correct public opinion orientation”.</p>

<p>The regulation by CAC also urged deep fake providers to register as early as possible.</p>

<p>As per the list, the organisations that have already filed are in the business of generating images from text, editing images/videos from the ones uploaded by clients and intelligent customer service.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the CAC, Beijing introduced the laws to constrict surveillance on the management of deep fake service, to promote “core socialist values”, protect national security and public interest and safeguard the rights of citizens and companies.</p>

<p>A woman allegedly attempted to hire a hitman to murder the wife of a man she met on an online dating application. Melody Sasser, a 47-year-old environmental compliance specialist in the United States, stands accused of trying to get the wife of her hiking partner killed.</p>

Their relationship deteriorated last year when Wallace moved with his then-fiancée, Jennifer, to Prattville, Alabama.</p>

<p>“I hope you fall off a cliff and die,” Melody Sasser stated when she got to know about David Wallace's intention to marry Jennifer.</p>

<p>Sasser joined the Online Killer market website in December. The scam website, which is now defunct, claimed to offer services such as "kidnapping, extortion, disfigurement by acid attack, and sexual violence," in addition to straight-up murder.</p>

<p>On January 11, Sasser, who worked for truck stop chain Pilot Flying J, sent the website $9,750 (Rs 8,05,570.84) in Bitcoin in exchange for Jennifer's details. Sasser tracked her information from a fitness app where Jennifer would update her details. This later tipped off the police about her.</p>

<p>Melody Sasser wrote to the site administrator to speed up the work.&nbsp;“Waiting for 2 months and 11 days and the work is not done. 2 weeks ago you said that on this. The work has been done and will be completed in a week," the user Cattree wrote on March 22. Jennifer Wallace has alleged that Sasser used this nickname online while trying to post a hit on her. "The work is still not completed. Is it necessary to delegate this task to someone else? Will it be finished? What is the reason for the delay, and when will it be completed?" the post added. &nbsp;</p>

<p>On April 27, the Department of Homeland Security was notified of the threats against Jennifer Wallace. Investigators worked with the couple to offer safety and find down the person who wanted her dead. Sasser was apprehended and detained on May 18. She is being held in custody, pending a court appearance on Thursday. If convicted of murder-for-hire, she faces up to ten years in prison.</p>

<p>A clip of shiver of sharks engaged in a feeding frenzy off the coast of Venice, Louisiana, went viral online, shocking many who initially thought that tuna fish was causing the commotion.</p>

<p>May told social content agency Storyful that he and his girlfriend, Kaitlyn Dix, were fishing on a friend's boat when they encountered sharks chaotically feeding on a massive bait ball.</p>

<p>The video, which went viral on TikTok, purportedly shows the sharks pushing the sides of the boat and splashing the fishermen with ocean water as they chased down fish.</p>

<p>"It's soaking wet," one of the passengers can be heard as saying in the video.</p>

<p>May said that the sharks were munching on a large pod of menhaden—a small fish that is commonly found off the eastern US and preyed upon by other fish. The Nature Conservancy calls it “the most important fish in the sea”.</p>

<p>“Then we saw it was sharks on a bait pod, never seen anything like it,' May said. 'No shrimp boats were in sight either!”</p>

<p>“The sharks had found the pod and pushed them up against the boat to feast on them,” he was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries (NOAA), sharks can go up to six weeks without feeding, but then they can anytime go into an "eating phase" and search for food.</p>

<p>"Sharks will eat anything. In fact, things like tires, license plates, a fur coat, a chicken coop, and even a full suit of armour have been found in their stomachs! But generally, sharks are omnivorous, which means usually they just eat meat and plants. If there is not an abundant supply of meat in the area, they will resort to eating sea vegetation," NOAA said.</p>

<p>The justices also expressed concerns that granting a judgement in favour of&nbsp;Gonzalez's family may open the floodgates for similar litigations against the tech companies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You are creating a world of lawsuits.&nbsp;Really anytime you have content, you also have these presentational and prioritisation choices that can be subject to suit," observed&nbsp;Justice Elena Kagan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A lower court earlier dismissed the plea against Google LLC-owned YouTube. Her family has accused YouTube of recommending videos by extremist groups to users, blaming the tech giant for supporting the radicals in their call for violence. Google and YouTube are part of Alphabet Inc. "By recommend[ing] ISIS videos to users, Google assists ISIS in spreading its message and thus provides material support to the ISIS," reads the legal brief.</p>

<p><strong>Section 230 - the law in question</strong></p>

<p>Legal immunity to tech giants under Section 230 has been questioned in the case. This is the first time that the US Supreme Court is hearing a case related to the scope of the law. Under Section 230, internet firms in the US can't be considered as the publishers of the content posted by users. It was passed more than two decades ago when the internet was in its infancy.</p>

US Supreme Court wary of removing legal immunity for the tech companies

<p>Elon Musk's SpaceX is racing to make wi-fi available in airplanes with a rollout of Starlink Aviation. The constellation of thousands of Starlink satellites already in orbit around the Earth will be used to make internet available, for now, in private jets. To facilitate this, Starlink Aviation is offering customers a USD 150,000 airplane antenna. Charges for the antenna would be one-time. On top of that the customers will have to shell out USD 12,500 to 25,000 per month for the internet service in their private jet.</p>

<p>These customers, likely millionaires and billionaires, would be able to use internet with speeds of up to 350 Mbps. This is enough for video conferences and even gaming.</p>

<p>Booking for such a connection can be made now by paying USD 5000. Starlink Aviation will begin delivering terminals in mid-2023.</p>

<p>The competition for airborne connectivity is heating up.</p>

<p>In addition to Starlink, Britain-backed satellite operator OneWeb is courting airlines and private jets. The market is currently dominated by companies such as Inmarsat and its rival ViaSat.</p>

<p>OneWeb on Tuesday announced an agreement with in-flight broadband giant Panasonic Avionics, which offers service to some 70 airlines, to market and sell OneWeb's broadband service to airlines by mid-2023.</p>

<p>Britain's competition regulator last week referred Viasat's planned takeover of rival Inmarsat for an in-depth investigation over concerns the tie-up could hamper new competition in the aviation connectivity market and increase prices for airlines' on-board Wi-Fi.</p>

<p>SpaceX plans to offer Starlink internet connectivity to Hawaiian Airlines planes next year. The company offers the service for maritime customers and RVs, and already has tens of thousands of individual consumers paying $110 a month with a $599 terminal.</p>

<p>The Australian Federal Court has ordered Telstra to pay A$15 million, a unit of TPG Telecom to cough up A$5 million, and imposed a fine of A$13.5 million on Optus, a unit of Singapore Telecommunications, the Australian Competition &amp; Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.</p>

<p>ACCC said that the false or misleading statements were made for at least 12 months in 2019. The claims possibly continued until 2020. These claims were related to their 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) or 100 Mbps fibre to the node plans.</p>

<p>The regulator said that all three telcos have admitted in court to&nbsp;having made false or misleading statements. The ACCC said that nearly 120,000 customers were affected due to these claims.</p>

<p>Telstra said in a statement that between April 2019 and April 2020 it failed to verify the maximum attainable speed of the NBN services ordered by around 48,000 customers either completely or within a reasonable period after connection.</p>

<p>NBN, or National Broadband Network, is a government-run broadband network.</p>

<p>"We've gone through an extensive remediation and refund process. We've also taken a number of steps to ensure we better meet our regulatory obligations," Telstra added.</p>

<p>Optus and TPG Telecom spokespersons, in separate emailed responses to Reuters, said the companies have made changes to their systems and processes to address the concerns raised by the proceedings.</p>

<p>As the Iranian government has imposed restrictions on internet access in the backdrop of protests across the country over the death a 22 years old woman in the custody of morality police, the Joe Biden administration on Friday issued guidance to relax sanctions on its internet services in the west Asian country.</p>

<p>Reportedly, the US treasury department relaxed the internet rules despite the US still having a plethora of sanctions imposed on Iran.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” said&nbsp;deputy treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo</p>

<p>“With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he further added.</p>

<p>Reportedly, Democracy for the Arab World Now (Dawn), a human rights group founded by 'murdered' journalist Jamal Khashoggi has revealed that a woman named Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for using the internet to tear into the 'social fabric' of the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, apart from the jail term, not much is known about Saeed's age or the concrete reason why she was arrested. According to Guardian, which received the Dawn report, Saeed was arrested for tweeting her opinions and that too from an anonymous account.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>A similar playbook was used earlier</strong></p>

<p>As reported extensively by WION, Salma al-Shehab, a 34-year-old PhD student studying at Leeds University in the UK was sentenced to 34 years in prison by the country's court for using Twitter and allegedly retweeting tweets from dissidents.</p>

Reportedly, Salma had returned to Saudi Arabia for a holiday but the Saudi authorities got hold of her and produced her in front of a special terrorist court which announced the draconian verdict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Abdullah Alaoudh, the director for the Gulf region at Dawn, who accessed the court documents which revealed Saeed's case stated that the slew of arrests could be connected to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meeting with President Biden last month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is impossible not to connect the dots between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meeting with President Biden last month in Jeddah and the uptick in the repressive attacks against anyone who dares criticise the crown prince or the Saudi government for well-documented abuses.” Alaoudh was quoted as saying by The Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) controls a major stake in Twitter. Moreover, earlier this month, a US court found an ex-Twitter employee guilty of spying for Saudi officials. Ahmad Abouammo reportedly sold Twitter user information for cash.</p>

<p>In today’s world, internet has become a necessity to live life. But as per a recent survey in the US, more than half of the respondents said that they want to delete themselves from the internet if possible. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In the new study conducted by NordVPN through market research firm Propeller Insights, more than 55 per cent of the Americans, who responded to the survey, made the remark, said media reports. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
