Adorning costumes that captured the three colours of&nbsp;the Indian national flag, the Army teams performed a variety of Yoga postures (asanas) underwater.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This captivating display of physical and mental agility was carried out under the guidance of an expert yoga instructor and freediver Jyothi Singh from Bond Water Sports Pvt Ltd. Historic accounts narrate stories of men who engineered bridges which seem impossible to be constructed with human muscles, who brought down rains and rivers on earth, who created parallel universes, who travelled to the sun and the moon, who covered the sun with clouds at will, who appeared and disappeared and who could leave their body at their will.<br />
<br />
Rishi Kanad brought about&nbsp;the Archimedes Principle, almost 2500 years before Archimedes, Sulbasutras and Shatpath Brahman describe the Pythagoras theorem much before Pythagoras. Surya Siddhanta details the sizes and shapes, motions and distances of planets and stars with remarkable accuracy. Sushruta had mastered the human body and performed surgeries like rhinoplasty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>How were the <em>yogis</em> and <em>rishis</em> able to achieve all this and that too, thousands of years ago? What is it that limits ordinary men from doing the same? The brain for an ordinary person functions at an efficiency of 7-8%, which is sufficient for the functions of the basic five senses. A human being however has 16 senses, which in turn are a function of the 92-93% brain that remains unutilised. It is this unutilised potential that was tapped into by the Vedic masters through the science of Yog.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Patanjali Yogsutras detail the various subtle and gross <em>siddhis</em> that come with the practice of the eight limbs of Ashtang Yog under the guidance of Guru. The basic <em>siddhis</em> of Vak Shakti (what you speak, happens), prosperity and abundance, beauty, glow and magnetism come with the practice of <em>yamas</em>. <em>Siddhis</em> of clairaudience and clairvoyance are a part of the practice of the <em>niyamas</em>. Sadhaks of Dhyan ashram conclusively proved the science of clairvoyance in a live demonstration in front of IMA doctors.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>Siddhi</em> of immunity to all weathers and environments and a steel-like body is achieved through <em>asana</em>, which is a posture in which you are still and at ease for long hours. Pranayama opens the <em>nadis</em> for unrestricted movement of <em>prana</em> to higher brain centres and for the awakening of Kundalini Shakti. The triple practice of <em>dharana</em>, <em>dhyan</em> and <em>samadhi,</em> which is called as 'saiyam' by Rishi Patanjali enables one to master whatever one focuses on – the strength of an elephant, the glow of sun, the beauty of moon, the workings of the internal organs, ability to become invisible and even weightless and more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is not mumbo-jumbo; the science of Yog has come from the <em>rishis</em> who revealed to us the deepest secrets of the universe, some still not conceivable through modern sciences. The experiences of Sanatan Kriya practitioners are living proof of this. Unfortunately, there are very few who understand the authentic path of Yog. The majority equates it with funny postures mis-termed as <em>asana</em> and breathing-like animals mistaken for <em>pranayam</em>. Patanjali Yogsutras were given 4500 years ago, and nowhere do they talk of twisting and turning the body into knots.<br />
<br />
There is only one line - <em>sthir sukham asanam</em>. That is a posture in which you are still and at peace. So any posture that can be maintained for long hours without movement or discomfort is an asana. Sage Patanjali is called the fountainhead of yoga.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is no dearth of yoga teachers these days, advocating modern innovative exercises en-masse, on television or in camps, some even selling CDs, calling it yoga. There is a vast majority of the population learning and practising those exercises and paying a hefty price – not just for the course, but also in terms of their health and body.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In so many years of teaching yoga, so many have come up to me with ailments which they acquired due to the wrong practice of yoga. To quote an example, Dr Prasan Prabhakar of Lakshmi Hospital, Kochi came to me with a chronic cold. He told me that he had attended a yoga camp where he was taught a rapid breathing technique and was informed that it might result in a minor cold which would last 48 hours. The cold for him started after a week and never subsided. He could not sit in the AC room even in the scorching heat because of the cold.<br />
<br />
When he approached the organisation, the ‘instructor’ told him that at times it becomes chronic and he can do nothing about it! It is important to understand that by rapid breathing, the movement of the <em>prana</em> in the body gets disturbed and based on the degree to which the <em>prana</em> is disturbed one contracts a disease. There are five major <em>pranas</em> in the body, detailed in the Sanatan Kriya under the topic of Paanch Mahaprana. These <em>pranas</em> control vital functions in the body and have a specific location and direction, which gets disturbed owing to rapid breathing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The science of Yog&nbsp;unfolds in stages, first through elements, then consciousness and finally divinity. In Sanatan Kriya, one is introduced to the Paanch Mahaprana Dhyan to bring the elements in the body to a basic level of balance. As that happens, a practitioner’s ability of thought manifestation heightens. Gradually the practitioner is introduced to the practice of Bhuta Shuddhi or elemental purification, which has the effect of restoring the elements to their purest form.<br />
<br />
Once that happens, a person can access consciousness in its purest state and even manifest <em>devs</em> and <em>devis </em>(Gods) into creation. In advanced stages, one is introduced to the practices of <em>saiyam</em> on Surya, Chandra and Guru Shakti. Much research has been conducted on these techniques by senior doctors and they are being practised and adopted by renowned doctors around the world.&nbsp;</p>

A human being however has 16 senses, which in turn are a function of the 92-93% brain that remains unutilised. It is this unutilised potential that was tapped into by the Vedic masters through the science of Yog. Patanjali Yogsutras detail the various subtle and gross siddhis that come with the practice of the eight limbs of Ashtang Yog under the guidance of Guru. The basic siddhis of Vak Shakti (what you speak, happens), prosperity and abundance, beauty, glow and magnetism come with the practice of yamas. Siddhis of clairaudience and clairvoyance are a part of the practice of the niyamas. Sadhaks of Dhyan ashram conclusively proved the science of clairvoyance in a live demonstration in front of IMA doctors. × Siddhi of immunity to all weathers and environments and a steel-like body is achieved through asana, which is a posture in which you are still and at ease for long hours. Pranayama opens the nadis for unrestricted movement of prana to higher brain centres and for the awakening of Kundalini Shakti. The triple practice of dharana, dhyan and samadhi, which is called as 'saiyam' by Rishi Patanjali enables one to master whatever one focuses on – the strength of an elephant, the glow of sun, the beauty of moon, the workings of the internal organs, ability to become invisible and even weightless and more. This is not mumbo-jumbo; the science of Yog has come from the rishis who revealed to us the deepest secrets of the universe, some still not conceivable through modern sciences. The experiences of Sanatan Kriya practitioners are living proof of this. Unfortunately, there are very few who understand the authentic path of Yog. The majority equates it with funny postures mis-termed as asana and breathing-like animals mistaken for pranayam. Patanjali Yogsutras were given 4500 years ago, and nowhere do they talk of twisting and turning the body into knots. There is only one line - sthir sukham asanam. That is a posture in which you are still and at peace. So any posture that can be maintained for long hours without movement or discomfort is an asana. Sage Patanjali is called the fountainhead of yoga. There is no dearth of yoga teachers these days, advocating modern innovative exercises en-masse, on television or in camps, some even selling CDs, calling it yoga. There is a vast majority of the population learning and practising those exercises and paying a hefty price – not just for the course, but also in terms of their health and body. To quote an example, Dr Prasan Prabhakar of Lakshmi Hospital, Kochi came to me with a chronic cold. He told me that he had attended a yoga camp where he was taught a rapid breathing technique and was informed that it might result in a minor cold which would last 48 hours. The cold for him started after a week and never subsided. He could not sit in the AC room even in the scorching heat because of the cold. When he approached the organisation, the ‘instructor’ told him that at times it becomes chronic and he can do nothing about it! It is important to understand that by rapid breathing, the movement of the prana in the body gets disturbed and based on the degree to which the prana is disturbed one contracts a disease. There are five major pranas in the body, detailed in the Sanatan Kriya under the topic of Paanch Mahaprana. These pranas control vital functions in the body and have a specific location and direction, which gets disturbed owing to rapid breathing. The science of Yog unfolds in stages, first through elements, then consciousness and finally divinity. In Sanatan Kriya, one is introduced to the Paanch Mahaprana Dhyan to bring the elements in the body to a basic level of balance. As that happens, a practitioner’s ability of thought manifestation heightens. Gradually the practitioner is introduced to the practice of Bhuta Shuddhi or elemental purification, which has the effect of restoring the elements to their purest form. Once that happens, a person can access consciousness in its purest state and even manifest devs and devis (Gods) into creation. In advanced stages, one is introduced to the practices of saiyam on Surya, Chandra and Guru Shakti. Much research has been conducted on these techniques by senior doctors and they are being practised and adopted by renowned doctors around the world. <p>Saudi Arabia is set to introduce yoga in the major universities of the country. Several agreements in the pipeline will be signed with universities to support and promote yoga, according to Saudi Yoga Committee (SYC) President Nouf Al-Marwaai. SYC is a body under the Saudi Arabia Olympic Committee, Ministry of Sports.</p>

<p>The decision was taken at a forum titled “The Role of University Sports in Supporting the Kingdom’s Vision in Sports,” organised in the capital city of Riyadh where several experts and international leaders registered their presence, according to Arab News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reflecting on the importance of yoga, SYC chief Al-Marwaai said the decision was taken as part of achieving Vision 2030.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Yoga gives its practitioners many health benefits (for) both physical and mental well-being. One of the most important pillars of achieving Vision 2030 is to enhance participation in sports activities, and to achieve sports excellence locally, continentally, and internationally," she was quoted as saying by Arab News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Al-Marwaai added that the committee will aim to discover yoga talent in the country and hone their skills with the hope that they "represent the Kingdom in local and international tournaments".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Under the standards, formal certification of yoga trainers will start with exams, and the process of evaluation can take place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Consulate General of India, New York partnered with the Times Square Alliance to host the Yoga celebrations under the theme "Solstice for Times Square 2021".</p>

<p>"As we celebrate yoga at the iconic Times Square - at the crossroads of the world, let us remind ourselves of the truly global embrace of yoga. Yoga was born in India but is part of global heritage today. Yoga is about health, well-being and about living in harmony with nature. Yoga is a way of life and we must try to practice it in its entirety, for a peaceful society and for a greener planet," Randhir Jaiswal, Consul General, told ANI.</p>

<p>"It was an incredible experience leading yoga, pranayama and meditation at Times Square NYC. Seeing thousands of yogis experience stillness amidst the chaos of the city never stops," said Ruchika Lal who participated in the event.</p>

<p>In keeping with this year's global theme - Yoga for Wellness - as coined by the United Nations (UN), the event showcased holistic health, Ayurvedic and nature-based wellness products from Tribes India (TRIFED) and other Indian companies. The stalls attracted a large number of visitors, eager to learn about the uniqueness of Indian Tribal, Ayurvedic and natural products.</p>

<p>The day-long yoga celebration offered experienced yogis and first-timers alike the chance to bring a yoga mat to the iconic public space and participate in a free yoga class. The Consulate General handed a bag of products from TRIFED and some wellness products produced in India as well.</p>

<p>"I love to practice Yoga at Times Square every year on Solstice. I want to thank the Consulate for this gift," a participant said.</p>

<p>The registration for the event is full, according to the Times Square website. The event could also be attended virtually by watching a class over a live stream. The Times Square yoga ran from 7:30 am until 8:30 pm, broken into nine separate classes, according to a schedule.</p>

<p>The International Day of Yoga was also celebrated in New Jersey today at the Liberty State Park with the Statue of Liberty in the background. This was a community-led event anchored by the Federation of Indian Associations. Famous yoga instructor Thara Natalie led the yoga session.</p>

<p>Mr SN Yadav, my yoga teacher, learnt his ropes under famous and much controversial Dhirendra Brahmachari. He continues to practice yoga and heal people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The healing is also accompanied by long rounds of preaching the virtue of the yogic traditions in India which can be both amusing and irritating at the same time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But, in one of the usual conversation which I had with him during a therapy session about Yoga, in general, made me see the whole PM Narendra Modi-led campaign in a different light.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
When I asked, what has changed under Modi when it comes to yoga, he said, “Respect.” The conversation was long but the message was clear that something indeed changed under Narendra Modi. Though yoga cannot be attributed to any person, group or government, but the push made by Narendra Modi did make yoga attain visibility and respect across the globe. A simple act of lending himself to the act of Yoga in public made the ancient art respectable with the Indian elite.</p>

<p>I asked him what does he mean by respect? He said,” Earlier hospitals would not entertain the idea of alternative healing. Today, every hospital invites us for alternative healing. Medical fraternity too has understood that Yoga does not compete with any system of knowledge. It only adds to it.”</p>

<p>There are photographs of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru doing Yoga and Indira Gandhi patronising Dhirendra Brahmachari, but a personalised push supported by both organisation and government was absent owing to the fact that many people associated yoga with Hinduism.</p>

<p>Lastly, when I asked him, what was the idea of yoga in 70s and 80s when you started your work, he said,” People thought Yoga is all about old people and ascetics and never thought in terms of it being an intrinsic part of modern daily life.”</p>

<p>It is for this reason, the public practice of yoga became such a polarising issue. But down the years, the critics have reduced and participation of people has increased. My understanding is that yoga has found space within the rubric of positive nationalism too which makes a claim to India’s rich historical ancient legacy.</p>

<p>Yoga is reflecting a larger temperamental shift, wherein faith from the ancient civilizational perspective is reclaiming its lost space in the politics, culture, literature and society.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This shift is a rejection of the idea of ‘French secularism’ which many political parties feel is still workable in Indian democracy. It is not. The former was about separation of the church and the state whereas the Indian experience of living together (as religious communities) is about peaceful co-existence which does not come at the expense of public affirmation of <em>Sanatan Dharma</em> and practices and art, directly and indirectly, connected to it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Today, India has stamped its ownership on Yoga and the credit, definitely, goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;Narendra Modi helped&nbsp;yoga&nbsp;attain&nbsp;the global status it deserved.</p>

<p>From the United Nations to the Indian Parliament premises and from Beijing to Ranchi, thousands of people stretched and twisted, breathed in and breathed out, reached for the skies and bent to touch their toes as India and the world marked the fifth <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/yoga-for-heart-care-this-years-theme-pm-modi-in-ranchi-229057">International Day of Yoga</a> on Friday.</p>

<p>The ancient wellness regime was the theme and its enthusiasts on the mat - literally - performing poses simple and complex amid chants of "Om" and "Shanti" in several global capitals and across towns and villages in India, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the observance of the day.</p>

<p>The United Nations General Assembly adopted June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014 on a proposal mooted by Modi.</p>

<p>While Modi led the celebrations in Ranchi, the capital of eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, his ministers spread out across the country with Home Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/amit-shah-credits-pm-narendra-modi-for-taking-yoga-to-the-world-229203">Amit Shah</a> participating in a function in Rohtak, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the national capital, where many hundreds did yoga in the rolling greens of Rajpath, and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur.</p>

<p>The world joined in in marking the day.</p>

<p>In a first of its kind yoga celebration, the iconic General Assembly hall of the United Nations reverberated with chants of 'Om' and 'Shanti' as UN officials and diplomats joined hundreds of others to commemorate the day.</p>
