More than a dozen senior Indonesian government and military officials were targeted last year with spy software designed by an Israeli surveillance firm, according to nine people with knowledge of the matter.

Six of the individuals told Reuters they have targeted themselves.

The targets included Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, senior military personnel, two regional diplomats, and advisers in Indonesia's defence and foreign affairs ministries, according to the people.

Six of the Indonesian officials and advisers targeted told Reuters they received an email message from Apple Inc in November 2021 telling them that Apple believed officials were being "targeted by state-sponsored attackers."

Apple has not disclosed the identities or number of users targeted. The company declined to comment for this story.

Apple and security researchers have said the recipients of the warnings were targeted using ForcedEntry, an advanced piece of software that has been used by Israeli cyber surveillance vendor NSO Group to help foreign spy agencies remotely and invisibly take control of iPhones. Another Israeli cyber firm, QuaDream, has developed a nearly identical hacking tool, Reuters has reported.

Reuters was unable to determine who made or used the spyware to target the Indonesian officials, whether the attempts were successful, and, if so, what the hackers might have obtained as a result.

The attempt to target Indonesian officials, which has not previously been reported, is one of the biggest cases yet seen of the software being used against government, military and defence ministry personnel, according to cybersecurity experts.

Spokespeople for the Indonesian government, the Indonesian military, the Indonesian Defence Ministry and the Indonesian Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) did not respond to requests for comments and emailed questions.

A spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry said they were unaware of the case and referred Reuters to BSSN.

Airlangga Hartarto, a top ally of the Indonesian president Joko Widodo, did not respond to questions sent to him by Reuters, nor did his representatives.

The use of ForcedEntry, which exploits a flaw in iPhones through a new hacking technique that requires no user interactions, was made public by cybersecurity watchdog Citizen Lab in September 2021. Google security researchers described it as the "most technically sophisticated" hacking attack they had ever seen, in a company blog post published in December.

Apple patched the vulnerability in September last year and in November started sending notification messages to what it called a "small number of users that it discovered may have been targeted."

In response to Reuters questions, an NSO spokesperson denied the company’s software was involved in the targeting of Indonesian officials, dismissing it as "contractually and technologically impossible," without specifying why. The company, which does not disclose the identity of its customers, says it sells its products only to "vetted and legitimate" government entities.

QuaDream did not respond to requests for comment.

In addition to the six officials and advisers who told Reuters they were targeted, a director at a state-owned Indonesian firm that provides weapons to the Indonesian army got the same message from Apple, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. The people asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. The company director did not respond to requests for comment.

Within weeks of Apple's notification in November last year, the U.S. government added NSO to the Department of Commerce's 'entity list,' which makes it harder for U.S. companies to do business with it, after determining that the firm's phone-hacking technology had been used by foreign governments to "maliciously target" political dissidents around the world.

Senior Indonesian officials 'targeted by spyware' last year

Indonesia's Ambassador Ina Krisnamurthi to India has said that the G20 grouping should remain relevant, key comments even as the country is set to host the summit in November of this year.

Indonesia's Ambassador Ina Krisnamurthi to India has said that the G20 grouping should remain relevant, key comments even as the country is set to host the summit in November of this year. The grouping of the 20 most powerful economies has seen a divide with western members on one side, and Russia on the other side in the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, ambassador Krisnamurthi said, "The most important thing is that we have to make sure that G20 is relevant, the challenges that happen globally and it delivers." Concerns remain even for a basic family photo of G20 member countries due to the West and Russia divide. India will be the next chair of the grouping and will host the summit in September of next year. WION: What will be the focus of Indonesia under its presidency of the G20 grouping? Ina Krishnamurthi: We maintain our 3 priorities, which are strengthening global health, digital economy enhancement and energy security. We will maintain the priorities until we pass the baton to India in November. WION: Bali has been chosen for the summit, why Bali? Ina Krishnamurthi: Bali is famous for its peace and tranquility and people coming to the place are happy and feel safe at home. In the past, we had many engagements at the level of leaders with very positive contributory outcomes. It is our hope that the next G20 summit also will produce very concrete deliverables as well as will not be a place where people get angry very quickly. WION: Bali means peace but the summit happening in the backdrop of Russia Ukraine conflict, the Taiwan strait crisis. Do you think this year's summit will see the family photo because we have seen occasions when all sides have issues? Ina Krishnamurthi: Well, happen or not, the most important thing is that we have to make sure that G20 is relevant, the challenges that happen globally and it delivers. So that people will not ask what the G20 is doing as prime economic engagement. So I think a photo opportunity is the best way to give a message for, maybe, nice things, and more importantly, to have a G20 that is relevant nowadays. WION: All leaders confirmed the presence? Ina Krishnamurthi: I haven't heard anything else. WION: How do you see the bilateral relations between India and Indonesia? The foreign ministers of the two countries met on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York. Ina Krishnamurthi: I think, the engagement between minister Retno Marsudi and minister Jaishankar is very close, especially this year because of the global dynamics and because we are back-to-back presidency of the G20, bilateral relationship between the two countries needs more strengthening in other areas. We need to also focus on people-to-people contact because I think the connection between our foundation of history is not enough as a way to move forward in future. We need more trade, investment, defence cooperation or other cooperation, we need more engagement with India. WION: Will Indonesia be keen to be part of the BRICS? Another I in the BRICS. Ina Krishnamurthi: Well, I think Indonesia is always keen on engaging with countries, friendly countries in whatever format. We are not closing the doors on any kind of framework of engagement including BRICS, we are not also closing any possibility of engaging with other frameworks. So, I think this is not about a yes or no answer, it's about what we can benefit from the framework of engagement. On Monday, September 5, hundreds of university students from Indonesia took to the streets to burn tyres in protest of the government's recent decision to raise fuel prices.

Students across the nation participated in similar demonstrations to call for the cancellation of the fuel price increase.

On Saturday, 3 September, Indonesia increased subsidised fuel prices by almost 30% as the government attempted to cut back on growing subsidies despite the possibility of widespread unrest.

Given that over 80% of the nation's oil firm Pertamina's sales come from subsidised fuel, adjustments to fuel prices in Indonesia will have a significant impact on individuals and small companies.

Months after Jokowi gained government, the last fuel price increase was implemented in 2014, which led to demonstrations all around the archipelago.

The country's economy is only slowly returning to its pre-pandemic level, according to ride-hailing app drivers, who fear that the fuel price increase would further reduce their revenue.

The largest country in Southeast Asia has already increased its 2022 energy subsidies to 502 trillion rupiah ($34 billion), which was three times the initial budget. This increase was prompted by rising oil prices throughout the world and a declining rupiah currency.

The amount required would depend on global crude prices, according to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, notwithstanding the increase in fuel prices.

Prior to joining OPEC in the 1960s, Indonesia was a significant oil exporter. However, as a result of a decline in oil production, Indonesia is now a net importer of oil.

Although they first recorded the magnitude to be 6.4, it was later corrected to 6.1.

This was the strongest among the three earthquakes that rocked in the area with the previous ones recording 5.2 and 5.4 magnitudes on the Richter Scale. According to Reuters, it did not cause much damage to the infrastructure in the region but the vibrations were felt by the people living “in the Mentawai islands, in the provincial capital of Padang, and in the surrounding area of Bukitinggi”.

There were some reports of damages in Siberut island and in Novriadi, there were reports of evacuation. A local official told Reuters that they held evacuation drives in a number of islands in the area but that is mainly due to precaution and past experiences in the region.

The region is part of the “Pacific Ring of Fire” which is prone to devastating earthquakes and natural disasters due to the collision of various tectonic plates. Over the years, Indonesia has seen a number of big natural disasters and in 2009, Padang experienced an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude.

It was one of the worst earthquakes to hit the region and it ended up claiming over 1100 lives.

Powerful earthquake hits off coast of Indonesia's South Sumatra, no casualties reported

Indonesia, on Saturday (August 20) announced its first case of monkeypox. A 27-year-old patient returned home to Jakarta and felt feverish. He had rashes on his body.

"The tests done on August 18 concluded that he was infected with monkeypox," said Indonesian health ministry spokesperson Mohammad Syahril as quoted by Xinhua news agency.

Currently, a medical team is tracing those who came in close contact with the patient. Indonesia is setting up more 10 polymerase chain reaction laboratories at entry points like airports and ports. The ministry said that about 10,000 monkeypox vaccines are being procured.

On July 23, the World Health Organization declared the escalating global monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern."

Speaking at the press conference on the report of the 2nd meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee regarding the monkeypox outbreak, Ghebreyesus said that he convened the emergency committee, a month ago, to assess whether the monkeypox outbreak represented a public health emergency of international concern. He further said that during that meeting, the committee came to the conclusion that monkeypox was not represented as a public health emergency of international concern.
