As the fastest-growing major economy and a prime destination on the global investment radar, India holds immense promise for investors. But there are some challenges that investors expect the stalwart leader to address.

Risks & opportunities in PM Modi's possible third term

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold talks with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Schloss Elmau. The bilateral meetings are among the half a dozen bilaterals he will have in Germany. This is the Indian Prime Minister's second visit to Germany in the last two months, the last one being in June to Berlin.

The meeting with the Canadian PM comes even as ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have shown signs of improvement. During the farmer's protests in India in 2020, comments by the Canadian PM had led to friction in ties. Back then India had summoned the then-Canadian envoy to Delhi, Nadir Patel.

When it comes to South Africa, a fellow Brics country, ties have been increased engagement, especially amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Remember India and South Africa had jointly proposed a waiver on Covid vaccine patents at the World Trade Organization. The proposal aimed at the production of more Covid vaccines that helps the developing world.

Indian PM meets Argentina's President later today. He will also hold talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Indonesia is the chair of the G20 this year and next year India will be the chair, which makes the meeting important. India, Indonesia, South Africa, Senegal, and Argentina have been invited to this year's G7 outreach summit. A bilateral with the German Chancellor is natural given he is the host.

PM will address two sessions of the G7 outreach summit. The sessions are on investing in a better future: climate, energy, health and addressing food security and gender equality. This is the third time PM Modi has attended the G7 summit since 2019.

Why does Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prefer night travel for foreign tours?

On May 16, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Lumbini, Nepal, for Buddha Purnima, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

This will be Modi's fifth visit to Nepal since taking power in 2014, but his first since re-election in 2019.

He will also meet with Nepal Prime Minister SherBahadur Deuba at Lumbini for a bilateral meeting.

At Lumbini, the Prime Minister will visit the sacred Mayadevi temple to offer prayers. The Prime Minister will also deliver an address at a Buddha Jayanti event organised by the Lumbini Development Trust under the aegis of the Government of Nepal.

Let's take a look at the significance of the site where all of these major events will take place:

Lumbini, the Lord Buddha's birthplace

The Lord Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was born in Lumbini's famous gardens in 623 B.C., which quickly became a pilgrimage site.

The Indian monarch Ashoka was among the pilgrims, and one of his commemorative pillars was constructed there.

The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, including the archaeological relics linked to the Lord Buddha's birth as a central element.

Lumbini was incredibly lovely during Buddha's time and was filled with gardens with shaded Sal trees.

The Shakyas and Kolias clans held these lovely gardens. Lumbini and its temple, as well as a bathing pool, were forgotten until German archaeologists unearthed them in 1895. Lumbini is also known for the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka of India's commemorative pillar, which is supposed to have been erected in 249 BC during his journey to Lumbini.

Maya Devi Temple, Lumbini

Maya Devi Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini.

A sacred pool (known as Puskarni) and a sacred garden are located near the temple. The site's archaeological remains have previously been dated to Ashoka's third-century BCE brick constructions. In 2013, a timber shrine from the sixth century BCE was unearthed.

Let's take a look at the significance of the site where all of these major events will take place: Lumbini, the Lord Buddha's birthplace The Lord Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was born in Lumbini's famous gardens in 623 B.C., which quickly became a pilgrimage site. Maya Devi Temple, Lumbini Maya Devi Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini. A sacred pool (known as Puskarni) and a sacred garden are located near the temple. The site's archaeological remains have previously been dated to Ashoka's third-century BCE brick constructions. In 2013, a timber shrine from the sixth century BCE was unearthed.

‘Modi @20: Dreams Meet Delivery’ book, which looks into the 20 years of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's model of governance at the Centre and in Gujarat—when he was the chief minister—was launched on Wednesday in New Delhi.

The book was launched by India’s Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. He was accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.

“The book presents different facets of the distinct thought process, the pioneering, pro-active approach and the quintessential, transformational leadership style that Narendra (bhai) Modi has come to be so closely identified with,” Naidu said at the ceremony.

He said the book encompasses the experiential journey of Modi since he left his house at the tender age of 17 and set out on a mission of knowing himself, his country and finally define the mission of transforming India.

“Modi ji’s vision, his dreams and mission India have been shaped by his extensive travels and insightful, experiential journey. This is the fundamental differentiator that makes Modi unique in several ways,” Naidu said.

The vice president said that despite demonetisation, Modi was able to win polls due to his communication skills as he communicated with the people, and they had trust in him.

At the event, Amit Shah called the PM an efficient leader. He said despite Modi's lack of experience, the latter was made the CM of an earthquake-prone state, which he ran efficiently and won several re-elections.

"PM Modi didn't even have experience in running panchayat when he was made a CM to run an earthquake-marred state. Despite that, he won continuously and ran the state quite efficiently," Shah was quoted as saying by ANI.

Jaishankar also emphasised that in his eight years of governance, PM Modi led the debate on terrorism worldwide.

"Eight years of Modi govt led to the global debate on terrorism. He has practised development-focused diplomacy, focused on border infra development to meet security challenges; takes interest in trade, & addressed all our embassies to reach $400 bn exports," he said.

Edited and compiled by BlueKraft Digital Foundation and published by Rupa, "Modi @ 20: Dreams Meet Delivery" is a compilation of chapters authored by Shah, Ajit Doval, Sudha Murty, Nandan Nilekani, Arvind Panagariya, S Jaishankar, Lata Mangeshkar, P V Sindhu and Nripendra Misra among others.

"On this visit I intend to strengthen bilateral relations even more. This visit is an opportunity to enhance cooperation with a global economic, security, technology and tourism power," he added.

The visit marks 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and takes place about six months after Modi's trip to Israel, the first by an Indian prime minister to the Jewish state.

Netanyahu will be visiting Delhi, Agra, Gujarat and Mumbai and will be accompanied by Modi on extensive portions of his visit, a press statement said.

He will hold meetings with President Ram Nath Kovind and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, apart from Modi.

Several MoUs, including in the field of oil and gas, renewable energy, amended protocol for airports, cyber security, and co-production of films and documentaries, will be signed between the two sides.

Israel's Saare Tzedek hospital would be signing an agreement with the ministry of health and family welfare.

Netanyahu is leading a high-profile delegation comprising 130 businessmen from 102 Israeli companies drawn from areas like agriculture, water, cyber security, health care and security, on his trip.

Israel will be investing USD 68.6 million to boost cooperation with India in areas like tourism, technology, agriculture and innovation over a period of four years, a senior official here said ahead of Netanyahu's visit.

The commitment is in addition to the India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund of USD 40 million over five years with equal contribution from both sides that has already been agreed between the two nations, Deputy Director General of Israel's Foreign Ministry, Gilad Cohen, earlier told PTI.

Moshe Holtzberg, the toddler who survived the November 2008 Mumbai terror attack but lost his parents, will also join the trip with his grandparents and his brave Indian nanny, Sandra Samuels, who saved him.

Netanyahu had promised to take him along on his visit during an emotional meeting between the now 11-year-old boy and Modi in Jerusalem in July.

The Indian prime minister will be hosting a private dinner for Netanyahu today evening after his arrival in New Delhi. The Israeli leader would also meet Swaraj today.

The Israeli premier would be formally welcomed tomorrow morning at Rashtrapati Bhawan following which he would lay a wreath at Rajghat.

He would then participate in a dialogue at Hyderabad House which will also include a one-on-one discussion with Modi. A meeting with President Kovind is also scheduled for tomorrow.

Netanyahu, accompanied by his wife Sara, would be travelling to Agra to see the Taj Mahal on Tuesday and return to Delhi to participate in the Raisina Dialogue.

Modi would be accompanying Netanyahu to Gujarat on Wednesday where he will be welcomed in the same fashion as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was with a road show in Ahmedabad.

The road show is said to be an 8-kilometre drive from the airport to the Sabarmati Ashram. The two leaders will also be witnessing several innovative technologies in the field of water, agriculture and health at iCreate and visit a Centre of Excellence.

Netanyahu would arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday in the evening where he will meet the Indian Jewish community.

"For BJP it is the SAUNI scheme (the Narmada water project for Saurashtra region), where we will fill dams of Saurashtra through huge pipelines," he added. Gabbar Singh Tax: Modi attacks Rahul Gandhi, says those who looted country can only think of dacoits

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asked the judiciary Sunday why it did not trust the prime minister, to which Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra replied that the judiciary trusts the prime minister as much as the public does.

The exchange took place at a celebration to mark National Law Day in Delhi.

The law minister was quoted in news reports as saying that the public trusted the prime minister. That the PM possessed the nuclear button -- that's how much the people of India trusted him.

And that the prime minister could do so much work through his ministers, and yet the PM through his law minister cannot be trusted to have a fair judge appointed.

The chief justice of India replied that the "prime minister is the repository of constitution trust". And that the judiciary trusts him as much as the public does.

This latest tussle between the government and the judiciary goes back to the issue of who should be in the NJAC, which appoints judges to the high courts and the Supreme Court.

Under Article 124A of the Constitution, the law minister used to be an ex-officio member of the commission and the prime minister was part of the three-member panel which nominated the two eminent persons to the NJAC.

But Article 124A was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2015.

Former Chief Justice of India JS Khehar, who authored the majority judgment in the NJAC case in October 2015, was present at the celebration. As was Prime Minister Modi.

Modi called for balance between the legislature, judiciary, and the executive and said the three needed to work together to fulfil people's wishes while remaining within their limits.

Why don't you trust PM, law minister asks judges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked Congress today while addressing a rally in Rajkot, over the scams that allegedly happened under UPA's tenure.

Modi said he might have sold tea to earn living but never sold his nation.

"The Congress dislikes me because of my poor origin. Can a party stoop so low? Yes, a person belonging to a poor family has become the prime minister. They do not fail to hide their contempt for this fact. Yes, I sold tea but I did not sell the nation," said Modi.

Recently, Yuva Desh, the Indian Youth Congress online magazine tweeted a derogatory meme taking a jibe at Narendra Modi's English speaking skills, leading to widespread outrage and condemnation.

In 2014 also Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said that Modi would never become prime minister but he is always welcome to serve tea to Congress.

Modi also dragged Aam Aadmi Party indirectly saying "While a new party came up in Delhi, whose style is to keep abusing and running away, I thought the Congress, being an older party would not indulge in such politics. But they have also taken this shortcut in the past two months and only hurled abuses and lies."

I sold tea, not the nation: Prime Minister Modi attacks Congress

Minister of State for the PMO Jitendra Singh spoke with WION's Kartikeya Sharma about the upcoming Gujarat elections.

Singh said GST had been very well accepted in the trading community, that the BJP's rallies in Patidar-dominated areas have been big, and that the elections will be a one-sided contest.

How is the BJP positioned in the state elections? The BJP has been in power in Gujarat for 22 years.
We are comfortable. With each passing day, we are consolidating our position and I can say with confidence that it is going to be a one-sided contest.

How is the BJP dealing with the resentment over GST in the trading community?
Contrary to the opinion in certain parts, GST has been very well accepted all over the country and Gujarat. Opposition is raking up this issue to provoke the industry and traders but the fact is that they are okay with it. Yes, they have some issues and Finance Ministry is openly receiving the feedback. It is sensitively dealing with the situation. Certain issues related to GST which are primarily procedural in nature will also be addressed. At end of the day, business community knows that their interests are only protected by a BJP government. They will not go for any other option.

A lot of traders in Surat say GST has worked perfectly for big business with a permanent infrastructure but not for small and medium traders?
These are transitional issues not specific to Surat. These are general issues. These issues too will be taken care off. Business community has confidence in us.

How is your party tackling the Patel issue? They were dedicated BJP voters.
Mark my word, as Gujarat has been a model for organisational discipline, the state will also send a strong message of the beginning of the end of caste politics in India. It is unfortunate that Congress, which is the oldest party and claims to be a pan-India party, is trying to stoke caste passions for political mileage. They will not succeed. BJP rallies in Patidar-dominated constituencies have been big and phenomenal.

You spoke of the Gujarat development model but the critics say that only big businesses have benefitted. Your response?
Gujarat went through revolutionary transformation when Narendra Modi was at (the) helm of affairs in the state. It is a case study in its self. Kutch was a desert but today it is an international destination for tourists. Many other states are suffering from (a) power deficit but Gujarat is a power surplus state.

Are you saying that Gujarat can throw up a surprise like the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections?
As far as we are concerned, we can sense a comfortable win with an improvement in the tally. It may surprise those who have created a perception that BJP is not doing well.

Gujarat elections will be one-sided contest: Union Minister Jitendra Singh tells WION

Celebrated Bollywood singer and Minister of State Babul Supriyo spoke to WION’s Kartikeya Sharma about the Padmavati controversy.

Supriyo said violence and threats to filmmakers are unacceptable, and that he hopes the film will be released soon.

He also spoke about the Gujarat elections.

Sir, how do you view the Padmavati controversy?

Creative freedom exists in our country. The entire noise which exists around the film Padmavati is not desirable and lot of people have taken freedom of speech for granted. Whatever has happened is sad and shouldn’t have happened. Obviously CBFC is seized of the matter. IB ministry has made it very clear that matter should be left to CBFC. Controversies like these invites people to make comments out of turn. Only way to resolve the issue is through process and dialogue.

Is it one of creative freedom?

That is fair enough. I cannot give you an answer from an extreme point of view. Let’s take Padmavati aside for a moment. The debate on artistic freedom has been age-old worldwide. In France, a piece of art became controversial and it was moved. The debate about good cinema and bad cinema continues. Padmavati is a huge film. There are many people who want to see the film but there are some question marks on it too. People who have not seen the film are raising the questions. There are apprehensions and I feel dialogue is the way forward. We can celebrate the life of the queen without hurting the sentiment which also needs to be looked into.

Deepika Padukone and other actors are being threatened?

That’s not correct. Deepika is just an artist who portrayed the character. She did what she was asked for. Film is a director’s medium. Threats are deplorable and no one subscribes to it. Deepika Padukone is a loved artist. The law of the land applies to everyone. There were lot of controversies around Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that subsequently got resolved. I’m sure this too shall be resolved despite all the noise. It is going to find a good closure.

Do you think bans work in the age of the internet?

I would say that let process take its course. Even if CBFC doesn’t agree, filmmakers will still have tribunals to look into the issue. People have the liberty to approach other bodies. Artistic disagreements can happen with the CBFC and other bodies. I think it should be resolved peacefully. Music is about peace as it provides reprieve from the grind of daily life. I just hope that at the end, good for everyone shall prevail.

Should films be judged from the position of a community’s honour?

The CBFC has to do the job. Life is not what is happening to you but how you react to it. Film is a huge process. Any good form of art it goes through its metamorphosis. I’m sure it will find its own way to reach people. As an artist, I pray for it and don’t want to take sides by adding fuel to the fire. For an example, with Hussain there were many controversies and I would see him at Lokhandwala but no one would attack him. We aren’t living a dream. People have their own apprehensions but I hope Padmavati reaches people in most beautiful manner. Cinema is about beauty.

Is the BJP well placed in Gujarat?

I’m certain that BJP will surmount problems in Gujarat. Unless and until you move into a house you cannot decide what to do with it. GST is only having teething problems which is being addressed properly and at regular intervals. GST is the biggest reform. The debate will continue. If you don’t bring larger section into the tax net it would not work in future for India. Modi has belled the cat and shown the courage to take reform agenda forward. Lot of praise should go to the Prime Minister Modi. We will win Gujarat. The debate only makes the follow-up of the election very interesting.

How do you view Rahul Gandhi’s campaign. The Centre's economic policies have become an issue...

If Rahul Gandhi choses to take the side of the tax evaders, he will obviously find support. Lot of people wouldn’t like to pay taxes. But lot of people also pay taxes. Honest people pay taxes. They pay taxes for the country as poor needs to be subsidised. The government needs to meet those goals. Rahul has a lineage and people will listen to him. But he is confusing people. All state elections in past have shown that the mandate has been for Modi. Congress, by promising reservations to Patels, is akin to fooling people as our senior leadership has pointed out.

Why couldn’t this be solved by the local BJP leadership?

In a party, you cannot have six or seven Narendra Modi. He is the biggest leader and he will be at the centre stage. His move to centre from the state has not weakened the state unit. His vision is being implemented. You cannot have his replacement yet others are doing their job. He will be missed in key areas in the state but it doesn’t mean that job is not being done.

Why is the BJP importing leaders like Mukul Roy from other parties?

Lot of people are getting convinced by our ideology. What is wrong in people joining us. People change with times and get attracted to other ideologies. Don’t people in corporates move. Don’t people want to do better in life. Coming to BJP is a promotion and I welcome them. When you are trying to do better in life then the better place to go is BJP. They are doing the right thing.

What were the hits and misses of the BJP campaign in West Bengal?

TMC and Left for a long period of time have practised different kind of politics. In remote areas, they have done nothing. Votes were purchased. 100 rupees also make a difference in some areas. They have given cycles in the name of government schemes.

But the BJP was not able to turn its support into seats?

BJP has not been traditionally present in West Bengal. It was Left and Congress and then TMC. We are taking steps. Mamata, out of 30 minutes, spends majority of time attacking BJP. We will do very well in 2019. We have the space in West Bengal.

Is the BJP prepared for the 2019 elections?

There will be few hits and misses but in the end, we will come out stronger. Our party has done exceedingly well under the Prime Minister. The reform agenda will continue.

Dineshwar Sharma has, arguably, the toughest job in the country.

With the situation in the Valley stuck in a stalemate, the fomer IB (Intelligence Bureau) chief has been named the government's interlocutor for Kashmir.

Sharma tells WION that he has been allowed to talk to anybody and everybody -- including the Hurriyat; that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "is very much emotionally attached to Kashmir and wants to see a doable solution to the problem", and that he (Sharma) will be guided by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's philosophy of insaniyat (humanity), Kashmiriyat (the composite, secular Kashmiri culture), and jamhooriyat (democracy).

It should help that Sharma already has valuable experience at this type of job.

He has before this also been an interlocutor with insurgent groups in Assam and Manipur.

What is the problem in Kashmir?
Pakistan has contributed to the problem of Kashmir from the very beginning. Right from 1987, it has provided logistics, supplied arms and funds. and fuelled the insurgency in every possible manner. The problem continues till today.

How difficult is your job, keeping in mind that Pakistan continues to interfere?
It is very difficult and I realise that, but I'm sure the people of Kashmir realise real harm is being caused to them by outside forces.

Have you been given a brief by the government on whom to talk to and whom not to talk to?
I have been given complete freedom by the government.

Can you talk to the Hurriyat, to any leader you wish to?

Yes I can talk to the Hurriyat. I will talk to everyone.

It is now known that some Hurriyat members have been involved in cross-border funds transfers, while on the other hand they are stakeholders. Your response?
Stakeholders does not mean a few, select faces. It means all the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Some of them might be doing something wrong. What do I have to do with that? I don't have to look into that aspect. That is a separate investigation.

Who are these stakeholders?
I have already said that the citizens of India living in Jammu and Kashmir are the stakeholders.

How do people meet you?
It is being worked out. I'm sure that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will come forward because I feel they are fed up with the current situation and with what Pakistan has done to them. I'm sure they will respond to the overture.

How serious is the Kashmir problem?
We have seen that radicalisation has taken place in Kashmir and it needs to be addressed very seriously. It is the responsibility of all of us, which includes the people of J&K and this country, to see that radicalisation is curbed.

How did the radicalisation take place?
A lot of material is pouring in from across the border via the internet. That has added to the problem.

How is today different from when you served in Kashmir?
There was no radicalisation in the 90's. It was different. The sentiment was about azadi. It was only a fight for azadi. Things have changed today.

What has changed?
Radicalisation gained pace after the ISIS gained a footprint in Iraq and Syria. From that point in time, radicalisation picked up, which was then further fanned from across the border via the internet.

Doesn't it -- radicalisation -- pose a national security risk?
Radicalisation is a major threat all over the world. It is not only about India or J&K. But J&K being more sensitive, we have to be more careful about it.

Does the breakup of the ISIS and the coming back of recruits pose a challenge?
Many factors are involved, which are then complicated by outside forces who would like to see more unrest in the state. They will try to make the radicalisation more acute so that Kashmir remains disturbed all the time.

What explains the participation of students in street protests in such large numbers?
They were pushed to come out onto the streets to protest. Vested elements motivated and organised these students. They are a weapon to be used by interested parties. Any action by security forces would get them maximum international attention... That was the purpose.

Then how does the state deal with them?
My job is to make them realise that this (stone pelting) is not the right thing.

When you talk to people in Kashmir, you get the sense that Pakistan needs to be involved... but then we will end up talking to an entity that is fanning the fire
That issue is not part of my charter. People of Kashmir need to realise that Pakistan is creating problems; it needs to be understood.

Before you, there was a committee and nothing came of it? Are their reports still secret?
Let me go and meet the people. I'm sure I will be able to make some difference.

Do you have access to the earlier report?
Yes I'm reading the report. It is a good beginning for me to carry forward.

Tell us about the report?
They have done a great job.

How is the problem of Kashmir different from Punjab and Assam?
I will answer the question in one line. Outside forces are not so much involved in Assam as they are in Kashmir. That makes the job in Kashmir tough.

Outside forces were also involved in Punjab?
Punjab has been sorted out. Punjab also took a long time. It cost the nation a lot. It took time. Kashmir will also take time but eventually it will be sorted out. I have no doubt about it.

Talks take place but there is no outcome? What's your philosophy, talks with an outcome or talks even if no outcome is visible?
I think through talks many problems can be addressed. We should try to ensure that the genuine problems of the people of Kashmir are addressed by the state and central government.

You have arrived in the midst of a deadlock. Doesn't that tell us the muscular approach does not work in Kashmir?
I don't want to comment on that at this stage for it will get misinterpreted.

Do you think the national vs anti-national narrative has impacted the average Kashmiri, especially through social media?
Yes. In the early 90's there was no social media. There were no cellular phones. Now the youth is connected and has access to each and every development. All these factors have contributed. This is not the Kashmir of the early 90's.

Some issues still remain as they were... Human rights is still an issue...
Yes, some issues still remain.

In the Yashwant Sinha report, one word stuck to me. It said there was a crisis of acknowledgment. Is it correct that the mainland does not acknowledge that there is a problem in Kashmir?
I have said that it is a big personal challenge for me and it is a big problem for the country. There is no question of not acknowledging the problem.

You don't agree?
There is a crisis in Kashmir, I'm saying it. But to say people in the rest of the country don't understand this is not true.

Where do you fit the Kashmiri Pandits into your talks?
Let me go to Kashmir and talk to people. They can be brought onto the same boat.

Lots of Kashmiris are nostalgic about "insaniyat, Kashmiriyat, and jamhooriyat". How will you take those sentiments of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee forward?
I will try to follow the path shown by Mr Vajpayee.

His path was about continuity of engagement despite setbacks?
Let me go and see. I will try to ensure peace and look for doable solutions so that this does not keep happening again and again.

There has been a breakdown of ordinary life in Kashmir. How can that be restored?
I have to meet the people and I'm sure they will respond and together we will find a solution.

What mandate has Prime Minister Modi given you, and what is his message?
The prime minister is very much emotionally attached to Kashmir and wants to see a doable solution to the Kashmir problem. He has already announced, on August 15, that the problem of Kashmir should be solved by embracing the people of Kashmir.

Did he say this to you?
He said this to the nation.

But what did he tell you?
Prime Minister Modi told me to talk to the Kashmiris and embracing Kashmiris is the objective of this government.

Yes, I can talk to the Hurriyat. I will talk to everyone: Govt's new interlocutor for Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to grasp a basic of the economy -- no amount of growth is enough if it is not creating jobs, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday.

He then went on to make yet another concerted attack on the prime minister and his government.

Gandhi was addressing the annual general meeting of the Punjab-Haryana-Delhi Chamber of Commerce in New Delhi.

Gandhi added that the prime minister wiped out 86% of cash from the economy -- he was referring to demonetisation -- without consulting anybody.

And that Modi did so with a very big chest but with a very small heart.

Gandhi said all cash is not black and all black (money) is not cash but the prime minister failed to grasp that.

Continuing in that vein, Gandhi said China outperforms us in job creation. And that it creates 50,000 jobs a day, while India creates only 4,100.

He added that six crore Indian businesses are small and medium enterprises. Gandhi said they are the backbone of the country's economy but that they are getting nothing in return.

Small business also needs to be heard in the corridors of power like the big business houses, Gandhi said.

The question is, he said, why is government disrespectful to small business?

And that Startup India is actually "Shut Up India".

Gandhi added that it is imperative that a government listen to everyone but this one does not.

And he added: I'm here to say that I will always be there to listen to you, to stand shoulder to shoulder with you at all times.

Three years ago, Gandhi said, the people had tremendous expectations from Prime Minister Modi. Today, those expectations are shattered.

And he took a potshot at GST or what he has dubbed the "Gabbar Singh Tax", saying it was badly conceptualised and is adding to people's distress

And he added that GST has already unleashed a tsunami of tax terrorism and that it's going to get worse.
