India end Bahrain outing with 3-0 loss to Belarus in international friendly

A penalty save from captain and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Rahul Bheke's first international goal could not prevent Bahrain from beating India 2-1 in an international friendly played at the Sheikh Ali Bin Mohamed Stadium on Wednesday.

Goals from Mohamed Hardan and Mahdi Humaidan in either half sealed it for Bahrain, even as Bheke's powerful header, his first international goal, had helped India restore parity in the 56th minute.

The match saw five players making their international debuts. While Head Coach Igor Stimac named VP Suhair and Danish Farooq in the starting line-up, Naorem Roshan Singh, Aniket Jadhav and Anwar Ali came on as second-half substitutes.

Earlier in the first half, a dominant Bahrain were almost off to a perfect start as they earned a penalty in the 6th minute when Mohamed Marhoon's shot hit Sandesh Jhingan's hand at the edge of the 18-yard box.

But goalkeeper and captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu anticipated correctly, diving down to his left to palm off Mahdi Humaidan's penalty.

India tried to regroup and in the 10th minute, Liston Colaco intercepted the ball in the midfield and tried to run between his two markers.

India is all set to play against the previous World Cup runner-up Brazil on Friday, followed by a match against Chile on November 29 and then will take on Venezuela on November 30 with all the matches set to be played at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus, Brazil.&nbsp;

India men`s football team coach Igor Stimac on Tuesday mentioned that togetherness, energy, positive attitude and a great mindset have been the biggest takeaways as Indian Football moved forward together towards the final qualification process of the AFC Asian Cup China 2023. India convincingly defeated Nepal 3-0 at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives, on Saturday to clinch the SAFF Championship trophy for a record eighth time.

"The feelings are special, and it`s all for the players. I`m happy for them. They worked really hard in very difficult circumstances as there was a lot of criticism. Some two and a half years back when we started the process, we started with a certain knowledge about what we need to do, how long it will take, and how patient we need to be in the course of time," said Stimac during a virtual press conference. "No national team coach has the budget to buy players, and every national team coach works with players that come out of the leagues. To reiterate myself - on the very first day I had mentioned that suffering will be part of the way, but that`s the only way to go where we are heading to," he added.

Indian talisman Sunil Chhetri says he hopes to continue playing and scoring goals for the country in the "foreseeable future", his battle-hardened body getting a booster dose in the form of a landmark 77th international strike that drew him level with King Pele.

"I have been extremely lucky to have played with some great footballers who don't get enough credit. I've learned something from every single coach I have played for. It's the coming together of many things -- big and small -- and I hope to keep doing it in the foreseeable future," he added.

Notwithstanding the occasional chatter around his age and his longevity, the Indian captain wants to keep playing in top-flight and has not given his future any thought.

"It might sound like a lie, but I've never given my future as a footballer any thought. Like I said, the one thing I probably do the best is wake up and turn up to train and play. I look forward to it, thoroughly enjoy it and haven't ever wanted to stop doing it.

"My future plan with football is literally what my next training session will look like. I am fortunate enough to have a support system around me that makes sure I don't need to think or worry about anything that isn't football. It just makes it all the more easier to love what I do."

Playing in his 123rd match for India, Chhetri struck a late goal on Sunday to place himself on a par with the Brazilian great (77 goals from 92 matches).

As with other sports, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the plans of most football teams and the India and Bengaluru FC striker is glad to be playing the game at the moment.

"Ever since international football restarted after the pandemic we have been utilising every FIFA window. Unluckily, I missed out on the matches against Oman and UAE in March (after testing positive for COVID). Those are the kind of matches which Indian football needs.

"At the same time, I understand that getting good games is tough owing to all the restrictions that pandemic has brought along with it."

There will be plenty of activity surrounding women's football in India next year (the country is hosting the AFC Asian Cup and FIFA U-17 World Cup), and Chhetri is delighted that the women have started getting opportunities to show their mettle in the sport. The day Chhetri scored his 77th international goal, the Indian women's team won their first of the two friendlies in Bahrain in a convincing manner.

Igor Stimac, the head coach of the Indian football team, stated the Blue Tigers are "still alive" in the ongoing SAFF Championship before their match against Nepal.

There isn't much of a choice, though, because there are only two games left in the group stage, both of which must be won if India is to go to the final.

"Nothing much has changed. We are here, and we are still alive in the Championship. We are still here to win the tournament," AIFF quoted Stimac as saying.

The two sides had previously played two back-to-back International Friendlies in Kathmandu in the first week of September, with India winning the second match 2-1 after drawing the first.

The Blue Tigers held their first practice session on Saturday morning, and all 23 players are eligible for selection, according to the news from the camp.

Brandon Fernandes, a midfielder, stated that the squad had "everything to play for."
