Indian Army gets Made-In-India battle tank

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday handed over the indigenously developed Arjun Main Battle Tank Mark 1A to the Indian Army here and said India believes in peace but will protect its sovereignty at all costs.

Modi handed over the tank to Army Chief General M.M. Naravane.

He accepted a salute by the state-of-the-art tank, indigenously designed, developed and manufactured by the Defence Research and Development Organisation`s Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment here.

Fifteen academic institutions, eight labs and several MSMEs were also involved in the project. The Defence Ministry had recently cleared the induction of 118 Arjun Mark 1A tanks into the Indian Army, costing around Rs 8,400 crore.

Modi said that Tamil Nadu is already a leading manufacturing hub of India and now he sees the state evolving as the tank manufacturing hub.

Stating that one of the two defence corridors is in Tamil Nadu, Modi said it already received an investment commitment of over Rs 8,100 crore.

"A tank made in Tamil Nadu will be used to defend our borders in northern India. This shows the united nature of India," he said. Modi said India believes in peace but it will protect its sovereignty at all costs. He recited Bharatiyar poem in Tamil to highlight the importance of defence projects in the country.

Modi also paid homage to CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the terror attack at Pulwama two years ago. "No Indian can forget this day. We pay homage to all the martyrs we lost in that attack," he said.

He also mentioned about the support provided to displaced Tamils in Sri Lanka and the Tamil fishermen captured by Sri Lanka. He declared that there are currently no fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.

Later, at a programme held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Prime Minister either inaugurated or laid the foundation stone for a slew of infrastructure projects.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam felicitated Modi, who also paid tributes to late Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi.

Modi, who began his speech in English by greeting people with `Vanakkam Chennai`, praised the enthusiasm of the city.

"Chennai is full of energy and enthusiasm. It is a city of knowledge and creativity. From here, we begin key infrastructure projects. These projects are symbols of innovation and indigenous development," he said.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Chennai Metro Rail Phase-I extension completed at a cost of Rs 3,770 crore and flagged off passenger services from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. He noted that the work was completed on time despite the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the material for the 9.05-km stretch was procured locally and supports his idea of `Aatmanirbhar Bharat`.

Modi also inaugurated 22-km fourth railway line between Chennai Beach and Attipattu. It will be an additional track to Thiruvallur districts meant to ease traffic from Chennai Port.

Railway Electrification of single line section in Villupuram - Cuddalore - Mayiladuthurai - Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai-Thiruvarur completed at a cost of Rs 423 crore was launched by Modi. He said this will be a great boon to delta districts. The electrification of this 228-km route will enable free flow of traffic without the need for a change of traction between Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Discovery Campus of IIT-Madras. The campus is to be built at Thaiyur near Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore in the first phase, over an area of 2 lakh sqm. He exuded confidence that it will very soon be the leading centre of discovery and draw the best talent from all over India.

The Prime Minister also laid foundation stone for the extension, renovation and modernisation of the Grand Anicut Canal System, which is an important source of irrigation in the delta districts. The modernisation of this canal system will be taken up at a cost of Rs 2,640 crore.

He recited a poem on the importance of conserving water, and said that the aim is to maximise each drop of water available. "Always remember the mantra of per drop, more crop," he said adding that conservation of water is a global issue.

Deputy Chief Minister Panneerselvam welcomed Modi and thanked him for the interest he has taken in the progress of the state. He praised the Prime Minister`s work ethic and referred to his recent emotional speech in the Rajya Sabha.

Soldiers of Indian Army at Karalpura in Kupwara have earned applause online for helping a pregnant woman reach hospital on time for the delivery even as Kashmir remained cut off from the country due to heavy snowfall.

The woman gave birth to a boy at the Karalpura hospital.

Late on Tuesday, the Company Operating Base at Karalpura in Kupwara received a distress call from Manzoor Ahmed Sheikh saying that informed that his wife Shabnam Begum is undergoing labour pain and needs to be evacuated to the hospital immediately.

Also, due to heavy snowfall and inclement weather, neither community health service vehicle nor civil transport was available and the same was possible only after the snow was cleared from the road.

"India categorically conveyed to China that any attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo at the border is unacceptable and that India is determined to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity," it said.

The Indian Army informed that budgetary constraints for "capability development" and meeting other requirements have been removed. The review noted that the induction of eight Rafale aircraft in September 2020 is a "gamechanger" for India’s national security.

The forces also informed that air version of supersonic BrahMos Air missile was integrated into the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft last year.

"The strength of Indian Navy furthered with the commissioning of INS Kavaratti, a fully combat-ready Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) stealth corvette and commissioning of warship IN LCU L57," it added.

"Unilateral and provocative actions by the Chinese to change the status quo by force in more than one area on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) were responded to in a firm and non-escalatory way ensuring the sanctity of our claims in eastern Ladakh," the Indian Army said in its review.

On Pakistan's activities along the Line of Contol(LoC), the Indian Army said: "High level of alertness by troops blunted Pakistan’s endeavours to infiltrate terrorists into the Valley, at the same time high tempo of kinetic operations in the hinterland ensured denial of operational space to terrorist organisations."

The Army said the internal security situation in the north eastern states in India has improved considerably with a large number of surrenders of insurgent cadres.

India's Ministry of Defence(MOD) in its year-end review 2020 on Tuesday asserted that "defending the territorial integrity of India in Galwan Valley has been the most shining example of the valour of our forces in which 20 brave India soldiers made the supreme sacrifice." Watch: "India categorically conveyed to China that any attempt to unilaterally alter the status quo at the border is unacceptable and that India is determined to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity," it said. On Pakistan's activities along the Line of Contol(LoC), the Indian Army said: "High level of alertness by troops blunted Pakistan’s endeavours to infiltrate terrorists into the Valley, at the same time high tempo of kinetic operations in the hinterland ensured denial of operational space to terrorist organisations." It is rare for the Indian Army chief to travel abroad. General MN Naravane is the first army chief to visit the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The Army chief is on a six-day long trip designed to create a military alliance with two Gulf powers.

General Naravane will be starting from scratch since India's defence cooperation with the Gulf has been limited.

The army chief could discuss the possibility of separate, but regular joint military exercises with the two Gulf allies. In recent years, the Indian Navy has held drills with Gulf partners.

In March 2018, India and the UAE conducted their maiden naval exercise "Gulf Star 1". In 2019, India and Saudi Arabia announced their first joint naval drills. Reports say the Indian Army had scheduled exercises in the Gulf before but they were delayed due to the outbreak of the Wuhan virus.

General Naravane could use the opportunity to reschedule the drills. Joint production of defence equipment could be on agenda too. Some reports have referred to the possibility of arms sales to the Gulf.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are reportedly interested in India's Brahmos missile.

The Gulf could be a lucrative market for India to sell its indigenous defence technology by March this year Saudi arms imports increased by 130 per cent with the UAE accounting for almost four per cent of the global arms deals both countries largely depend on the United States for weapons but they have been scouting other suppliers too.

The UAE is interested in equipping the Indian army. It is in talks with New Delhi to set up a Make in India route to supply carbines. UAE-based firm Caracal had won a contract two years back. Reports say the deal is yet to be signed.

The Army chief's West Asia tour will irk Pakistan and the generals in Rawalpindi. Over the years, a number of Pakistani soldiers have been deputed to Saudi Arabia and the UAE with the Pakistani military roped in the protection of the House of Saud.

Now, the Gulf powers are looking at India as a long term security partner. General Naravane's visit to the Gulf comes at a significant time. The UAE and Bahrain have established diplomatic ties with Israel.

The new partnerships open up possibilities for closer security cooperation with countries that are allies of India. New Delhi must make most of this realignment.

India eyes new defence partnership as Army chief General Naravane visits West Asia

In a significant development, Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane will be on a week-long two-country visit next week. He will be visiting Saudi Arabia and UAE. This is first such visit by any Indian Army chief to both the West Asian Arab countries.

He will be in Saudi Arabia from 6th to 8th December. India and Saudi Arabia have had increased engagement in defence. Four jawans of Indian army and three terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, an Indian Defence Ministry spokesperson said, in the bloodiest gun battle in the disputed region since April this year.

The terrorists made an abortive bid during the night to infiltrate into the Indian side of the LoC in Machil sector in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, they added.

The infiltrators were challenged and three of them were killed, the officials said.

However, three Army soldiers, including an officer, and a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan were also killed during the operation, they added.

"A BSF soldier was killed in action (KIA) and the firefight stopped at 0400 hours," Col Kalia said in a statement.

He said more troops were rushed to the area and the movement of the militants was tracked with the help of surveillance devices.

"Contact was re-established at 1020 hours when the heavy fire was drawn by own search parties approximately 1.5 km from the LoC. In the ensuing firefight, two more terrorists were killed. Own troops suffered three KIA and two injured," Col Kalia said.

This is the highest number of army casualties along the Line of Control in Kashmir since April this year. Five Indian troops and an equal number of militants were killed in April this year when armed militants were challenged by Indian troops in the area.
