The Indian Army to place another order of 72,000 Sig 716 assault rifles from the United States.

The order for the second batch of the assault rifles was placed after the first lot of 72,000 rifles, has already been delivered to the Army for use by troops in Northern Command and other operational areas.

"We are going to place an order for 72,000 more of these rifles under the financial powers granted to the armed forces," Defence sources told ANI.

The Indian Army had received the first lot of Sig Sauer assault rifles to boost its counter-terrorism operations.

India had acquired the rifles under the fast-track procurement (FTP) programme.

The new rifles will replace the existing Indian Small Arms System (Insas) 5.56x45mm rifles used by the forces and manufactured locally by the Ordnance Factories Board.

As per the plan, around 1.5 lakh imported rifles were to be used by the troops in the counter-terrorism operations and frontline duties on the Line of Control (LoC), the remaining forces would be provided with the AK-203 rifles, which are to be produced jointly by India and Russia at Amethi ordnance factory.

The Defence Ministry placed an order of 16,000 light machine guns (LMGs) from Israel recently to do away with the shortage of these guns.

Facebook, Instagram, PUBG, Tinder among 89 apps banned by Indian army

The Indian Army has asked its personnel to delete 89 apps from their phones that include Facebook, TikTok, PUBG and Instagram.

It comes days after the government banned 59 Chinese apps following the India-China stand-off at Galwan Valley. The Army has added more apps to the list to plug the leak of classified information. India is not the first country to resort to this move, several militaries across the world have been pulling their guard against suspicious apps.

Soldiers with smartphones can be easy targets for the enemy especially at a border with war-mongering China. Cell phones are fearfully insecure with simple malware trap it could reveal strategic locations and positions. The Indian army has therefore banned the use of 89 apps with some very popular ones like Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday gave one more month to the Centre for implementation of its verdict on giving all serving SSC women officers permanent commission in the Army.

A bench headed by Justices D Y Chandrachud said that the Centre will have to comply with all its directions given in its verdict.

The top court's direction came on an application filed by the Centre seeking six months' time for implementation of the verdict citing the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a landmark verdict on February 17, the top court had directed that women officers in the Army be granted permanent commission and command postings, rejecting the Centre's stand of their physiological limitations as being based on "sex stereotypes" and "gender discrimination against women".

It had directed the Centre that within three months, all serving Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers have to be considered for Permanent Commissions (PCs) irrespective of them having crossed 14 years or, as the case may be, 20 years of service.
