What is marital rape?

In broad terms, marital rape or spousal rape is the term used for non-consensual&nbsp;sexual intercourse&nbsp;by&nbsp;a man on his&nbsp;wife. It may also involve&nbsp;physical or&nbsp;verbal threats.&nbsp;According to exception 2 of section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, sexual intercourse between a&nbsp;man and his own wife,&nbsp;who&nbsp;is not under the age of 15,&nbsp;is not considered rape.&nbsp;

Delhi Hight Court split verdict

The new hearing is taking place a year after the Delhi High Court gave&nbsp;a split&nbsp;verdict&nbsp;in a case involving the criminalisation of marital rape. Justice C Hari Shankar, who was part of the high court’s division bench, had said that exception under the rape law is not unconstitutional.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Justice Rajiv Shakdher, who headed the division bench of the high court, had favoured striking down the marital rape exception and said it would be tragic if a married woman’s call for justice is not heard even after 162 years since the enactment of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to Justice&nbsp;C. Hari Shankar, the marital rape exemption is not unconstitutional.&nbsp;

Nevertheless, Judge Rajiv Shakdher had argued in favour of removing marital rape exemption. He said it would be unfortunate if a married woman's plea for justice went unanswered.&nbsp;

Yet,&nbsp;because the case had&nbsp;"substantial questions&nbsp;of law," the judges granted the certificate of leave to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Karnataka High Court verdict

A key decision in a case of marital rape was also&nbsp;made by the Karnataka High Court in December of last year. The&nbsp;court rejected&nbsp;the husband's plea&nbsp;to have the pending rape charges&nbsp;against him dismissed. A charge against him was made by his wife under Section 376 of the Indian Penal&nbsp;Code.

Karnataka High Court reportedly said, "The institution of marriage does not confer, cannot confer and in my considered view, should not be construed to confer, any special male privilege or a licence for unleashing of a brutal beast. If it is punishable to a man, it should be punishable to a man albeit, the man being a husband."

Since the 1980s, many countries have abolished the marital rape immunity through legislations. These include South Africa, Ireland and Canada.

Therefore to understand the effects of extreme heat waves&nbsp;on humans, Wet-bulb temperatures are used. This is an indicator which combines the relative humidity and temperature of the air. In comparison to air temperature alone, it offers a more precise measurement of heat stress on the human body.&nbsp;

According to the World Bank report analysis, India's wet-bulb temperatures rarely, if ever, rise beyond 32°C even during the greatest heat waves.&nbsp;However, according to climate models, these temperatures could exceed the survivability threshold of 35°C at a few locations in the Northern parts.

In fact, the report suggests that large areas of South Asia are likely to experience episodes with temperatures higher than 31°C, which is extremely dangerous for most humans.

As a result, there will be a need for a new air conditioner every 15 seconds, which will increase yearly greenhouse gas emissions by 435 percent over the next two decades.

If carbon emissions stay high, heat waves in India are predicted to endure 25 times longer by 2036–2065, according to the G20 Climate Risk Atlas. India's rising temperatures will increase demand for cooling.

The Indian Tax Department recently made it mandatory for every citizen to link the Permanent Account Number or PAN to their Aadhaar Card last by March 31, 2023. In its tweet earlier this month, the tax department said that the process is compulsory for all under the Income Tax Act, 1961, NDTV reported. It added that from April 01, 2021, all unlinked PAN will become inoperative. The department on its website gave links for its taxpayers to check if their PAN card is linked to their Aadhaar card or not.&nbsp;

Since you are linking both your cards, you will have to visit the Income Tax e-filing portal to check the status of the card linking.

First, on the homepage click 'Quick Links,' then click on Aadhaar Status.&nbsp;

After this, a page will open which will have two fields where you&nbsp;need to enter PAN and Aadhaar numbers.&nbsp;

The server then checks the status, and a pop-up message will be displayed. If both Aadhaar and PAN are linked, the message will read, "Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar."

However, if both cards are not linked, then this message will appear, "PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on 'Link Aadhaar' to link you Aadhaar with PAN."

But if the link is in progress, then the taxpayer will see this on his/her window, "Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Please check the status later by clicking on 'Link Aadhaar Status' link on Home Page."

Another way for checking the status can be done by logging into the Income Tax portal and by doing the following steps:

Eric Garcetti on Friday was formally sworn in as the next US Ambassador to India, over two-and-half years after his name was originally announced for the position.&nbsp;

Garcetti was sworn in by US Vice President Kamala Harris at an event which saw the presence of Garcetti's daughter Maya, his wife Amy Wakeland, father Gil Garcetti, mother Sukey Garcetti, and mother-in-law Dee Wakeland.&nbsp;

"It feels great. Can't wait to serve," Garcetti, 52, said, as per reports. "I'm so honoured the vice president did this," he added.&nbsp;Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff also attended the event.

Indian Ambassador to US Taranjit Singh Sandhu held talks with Garcetti following the ceremony. While congratulating Garcetti as the new Ambassador of US to India, Sandhu said, "As he prepares to depart for India, we discussed some immediate priorities in deepening the bilateral partnership, in line with our Leaders' vision."&nbsp;

Garcetti, when asked about when he plans to travel to India, said, "Hopefully as soon as I can."

Together, Harris and Garcetti rose to prominence in California politics. Harris is of Indian and Jamaican origin, while Garcetti is Jewish and Mexican American. Garcetti talked about their shared links as mixed-race people.

He was 42 at the time of his inauguration, making him the youngest mayor in over 100 years.

Akasa Air plans to hire about 1,000 additional employees, bringing the total number of staff to over 3,000 by the end of March 2024. Vinay Dube, the CEO of the seven-month-old airline, which began operations in August 2022, stated in an interview with PTI that by the end of 2023, the airline will also begin operating on new routes and will introduce international flights.

By the end of the year, a "three-digit aircraft order," according to Dube, will be placed. Akasa Air is expanding its fleet to include 72 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, which are expected to be delivered by early 2027, in addition to the 19 Boeing 737 Max aircraft that are already in operation.

The airline will increase its fleet size to 28 aircraft during the upcoming fiscal year. Dube&nbsp;emphasised that the company prioritises steady growth rather than "growth for the sake of growth," and that by the end of the summer, the airline will increase its daily flight operations from the current 110 (on 17 domestic routes) to 150.

By the end of the following fiscal year, the current 2,000-person workforce will increase to 3,000, Dube projected, and comprise 1,100 pilots and flight attendants. For planes that are set to begin flying in three months, the airline always makes advance hirings.&nbsp;

The CEO stated that the airline's three main objectives are to provide employees and customers with sustained levels of satisfaction and to do so with a stable price structure. This is made possible by the fact that the organisation, which calls itself as "India's most dependable airline," is not vying for top positions in the aviation industry or market influence.

He added&nbsp;that the airline was focusing on&nbsp;countries&nbsp;both in the east and west. "... we may want to fly to X cities, and there may be traffic rights available for that country, but in that particular airport, you may not have slots. All these permutations and combinations are being worked on right now,” he told PTI.
