The I.N.D.I.A. bloc has put forward 10 requests to the Supreme Court amid the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The demands come as opposition leaders raise concerns over the voter revision process. The developments add to the legal and political debate surrounding the SIR exercise.

I.N.D.I.A. Bloc lists 10 requests to Supreme Court

The opposition leaders from the INDIA Bloc filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Monday, listing 10 prayers, including an interim stay on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and action on alleged irregularities in the poll process. According to the petition listed on the Supreme Court website as Rahul Gandhi v. Election Commission of India, the Congress legal team filed the plea before Gandhi reached the court in the evening. Lawyer S Prasanna filed the petition, as Rahul could not arrive before the 4.30 pm deadline. The petition seeks 10 reliefs concerning the SIR and decisions taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI).The joint plea followed Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s refusal on Sunday to meet Rahul Gandhi, stating that the matters being raised are already sub judice.
‘Direct ECI to produce all details related to SIR’
The petition urges the apex court to direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to produce complete files, agreements, minutes of meetings and records of objections related to the SIR. It also seeks ECINET and ERONET access logs and file notings concerning the decision to begin the exercise on June 24, 2025. It seeks judicial examination of whether the disputed decisions comply with Article 324, Section 18 of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023, and principles laid down in earlier Supreme Court judgments, including Seshan v. Union of India (1995). It urges that decisions taken without proper statutory authority be set aside.
‘Take action against those responsible for violation of provisions’
The plea also seeks action against those responsible for any violation of constitutional or statutory provisions governing electoral-roll preparation and revision and seeks due action under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, where necessary. It also wants the online Form 6 to conform to the version prescribed under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, and says changes should not be made without following the formal procedure to amend rules.
‘Set up independent committee to review SIR deletions, EVM use’
The plea further seeks an independent committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, with technical experts and eminent citizens. It says the panel would investigate deletions and amendments to electoral rolls during the SIR, examine database access and changes. The panel would also review the technical design, architecture, procedures and protocols governing the use and deployment of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The petition seeks the publication of booth-wise lists of voters deleted during the SIR, the reasons for each deletion and a classification of deleted names by gender and age. It also calls for an effective mechanism to restore the names of eligible voters.
‘Suspend ongoing SIR across states’
The Opposition urges the court to direct that no voter’s name be deleted without legally required notice and a reasonable opportunity to be heard. The petition requests the court to suspend the ongoing SIR across all states until all the issues raised are considered and decided. The plea also asks the Supreme Court to pass any additional orders it considers necessary to protect the electoral process and the voting rights of every eligible citizen.

After crackdown on CJP, opposition to march to Supreme Court Monday over ‘vote chori', removal of CEC

The INDIA bloc is planning to organise a mega protest on Monday (October 12) as the crackdown in Delhi continued on Saturday over protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The ongoing protest is against the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. TMC chief and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will also join INDIA bloc's protest on Monday. Therefore, Banerjee has rescheduled her travel plans, cancelling her scheduled return to Kolkata and deciding to stay in the national capital. Meanwhile, Banerjee was detained by Delhi police on Saturday (October 10) before joining the CJP protest. Wangchuk, who had lent his support to the anti-CEC protest, was unable to join the agitation in Delhi in person. He said he had initially taken comfort in knowing there were enough leaders to steer the movement forward, only to later learn that all of them had been arrested. He expressed hope that those detained would be released soon, while cautioning that he may be left with no choice but to consider undertaking an Anshan Fast or a Padyatra March should the arrested leaders not be freed by Sunday.

From CEC’s resignation to paper ballots: INDIA bloc’s 4 demands to President Murmu

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday (Oct 9) claimed that Indian President Droupadi Murmu “did not deny” the alleged “vote chori” after meeting with INDIA bloc leaders. Instead of “questioning” or “arguing” their statements, the President asked the Opposition leaders to submit proof of the accusations made against the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This comes amid ongoing protests over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Gandhi said, “The main thing is that I expected the President of India to deny that ‘vote chori’ was taking place. I expected her to say that India has a free and fair electoral system. I was shocked and stunned that the President of India accepted what we said.”Gandhi added, “I sat in quite an unbelievable meeting. First, we took a memorandum to the President of India. In that memorandum, we clearly stated that the Prime Minister, HM Amit Shah, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar had conspired to destroy Indian democracy.”He said that the President “in no way denied what we said, questioned what we said, or argued what we said.” Gandhi said that the President “accepted” their statements and then “told us that we needed to provide her with proof of ‘election chori’.” He further added, “I said that the evidence of ‘election chori’ is known to the entire country. State after state has been stolen. The 2024 election was stolen, and yet the President wants us to submit proof to her. This same group of people will be very happy to present the evidence of 'election chori' that we have collected to the President of India when she is ready to accept it.”
What is INDIA bloc demanding?
The INDIA bloc’s memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu called for sweeping changes to the electoral system, including the removal and prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition alliance also demanded the withdrawal of parliamentary immunity granted to the CEC and urged the government to replace Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with paper ballots.Another key demand was an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, along with the reinstatement of millions of names allegedly deleted from voter lists across several states. The demands came as opposition MPs and INDIA bloc leaders marched from Parliament towards Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, escalating their protest against the Election Commission and pressing for Kumar’s resignation.

In that memorandum, we clearly stated that the Prime Minister, HM Amit Shah, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar had conspired to destroy Indian democracy.” He said that the President “in no way denied what we said, questioned what we said, or argued what we said.” Gandhi said that the President “accepted” their statements and then “told us that we needed to provide her with proof of ‘election chori’.” He further added, “I said that the evidence of ‘election chori’ is known to the entire country. State after state has been stolen. The 2024 election was stolen, and yet the President wants us to submit proof to her. This same group of people will be very happy to present the evidence of 'election chori' that we have collected to the President of India when she is ready to accept it.” What is INDIA bloc demanding? The INDIA bloc’s memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu called for sweeping changes to the electoral system, including the removal and prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition alliance also demanded the withdrawal of parliamentary immunity granted to the CEC and urged the government to replace Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with paper ballots. Another key demand was an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, along with the reinstatement of millions of names allegedly deleted from voter lists across several states. The demands came as opposition MPs and INDIA bloc leaders marched from Parliament towards Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, escalating their protest against the Election Commission and pressing for Kumar’s resignation.

Rahul Gandhi claimed President Droupadi Murmu did not deny the Opposition’s ‘vote chori’ allegations during a meeting, but asked INDIA bloc leaders to submit evidence of alleged electoral fraud.

Leaders of the INDIA bloc held a key meeting in New Delhi on Monday (Jun 8), where alliance chairperson and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urged opposition parties to remain united against what he called the Centre’s “misgovernance” and continued challenges to constitutional values. In his opening remarks, Kharge also slammed the government over SIR and the economy during the meeting.Praising the unity, Kharge said, “This group came into existence almost exactly three years ago. I do not wish to speak at length, because the issues before us are well known to all of you. On April 17, 2026, we demonstrated our unity and solidarity in the Lok Sabha in a very decisive manner, when we all came together firmly to defeat the Modi government's malicious bills on delimitation.”He urged alliance partners to build on that unity, claiming “misgovernance” by the government on key issues, including political, economic, social and foreign policy. Speaking on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Kharge alleged that the exercise was depriving millions of citizens of their voting rights. He also accused the Centre of undermining constitutional principles and misusing investigative agencies to pressure and target opposition leaders, while claiming that non-BJP state governments faced discrimination.“Due to SIR, the voting rights of our millions of people are being stripped away. The assault on the Constitution continues unabated. Investigative agencies are being persistently used as tools to harass, intimidate, and bully political opponents. Discrimination is being meted out against non-BJP governments,” he said. The Congress president further criticised the government’s economic management, saying that prices of essential goods were rising and economic growth was “negative”.He said, “Prices of essential goods are continuously rising, and the economic environment is extremely negative. New investments are not coming in at the pace required to generate new jobs. Private monopolies are growing in many sectors, and the future of MSMEs is in serious crisis.”Kharge also expressed concern over the examination system, alleging that repeated irregularities were hurting the aspirations of young people seeking educational and employment opportunities.“Due to the complete mismanagement of the examination system, the hopes and aspirations of our lakhs of youth are being betrayed. Atrocities against the weaker sections of society, especially in BJP-ruled states, continue relentlessly.”Speaking on foreign policies, he added, “Our foreign policy has been completely compromised, and those traditional values that India has long staunchly supported have not been upheld.”

'Who is CM face of your alliance?' INDIA bloc questions NDA after Tejashwi named Mahagathbandhan leader

India is at the cusp of choosing its new vice-president after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in July. What was meant to be a mid-term continuation of routine parliamentary business has suddenly become a high-stakes political contest, drawing attention to two sharply different candidates and the power balance between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc.
Why a new election was needed
Vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down on July 21, citing health reasons. His exit created a rare mid-term vacancy in the vice-presidential office, prompting the Election Commission to announce a special election for September 9, 2025. The vice-president of India, who is also the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, holds a crucial constitutional position—balancing legislative responsibilities while being first in line to the presidency should the need arise.
The candidates in fray

CP Radhakrishnan: NDA’s Pick
The NDA has fielded CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Currently serving as Governor of Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan is not new to politics or parliamentary life. A two-time Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore, he also led the BJP in Tamil Nadu as state president. Over the years, he has developed a reputation for loyalty to the party and long administrative experience, which the NDA is banking on to project stability. His nomination was announced on August 17 and quickly secured support from several allies, including the YSR Congress Party, JD(U), AIADMK, NCP, TDP, and Shiv Sena. That broad coalition makes him the frontrunner in terms of numbers.
B Sudarshan Reddy: INDIA Bloc’s challenger
The opposition INDIA bloc has united behind Justice (Retd.) B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge who also served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court and later became Goa’s first Lokayukta. Reddy’s candidature, announced on August 19, is a deliberate contrast to the NDA’s political choice. The opposition is framing him as a figure of integrity and constitutional commitment, aiming to appeal to lawmakers’ sense of independence and conscience.
How the election works
The vice-president is chosen by members of both houses of Parliament through a secret ballot under the single transferable vote system. This means MPs are free to vote beyond party lines, giving rise to the possibility of cross-voting. Polling is being held on September 9 at Vasudha Hall in Parliament House, running from 10am to 5pm, with counting set to begin immediately afterward. The result is expected by evening. With 781 MPs eligible, and around 770 expected to cast votes (given abstentions by some parties like BJD and BRS), the halfway mark is 386 votes.
The numbers game
In terms of raw arithmetic, the NDA enjoys a comfortable lead. Together with allies and external supporters, Radhakrishnan is estimated to command between 425 and 429 votes, already above the majority threshold. The INDIA bloc controls about 324 MPs — a significant bloc but not enough to tilt the balance on its own. Their strategy lies in presenting Justice Reddy as a moral alternative and hoping to secure cross-party votes or at least narrow the margin to showcase opposition strength.
What’s at stake
The vice-president plays a pivotal role in managing the Rajya Sabha, often becoming a key figure in balancing debates and ensuring the smooth functioning of the upper house. With India’s Parliament entering a period of heated debates on reforms, economic policy, and foreign affairs, the choice of Vice President will have immediate practical implications. Moreover, this election is a test of strength between the ruling NDA and the INDIA bloc. For the NDA, a win by Radhakrishnan would reaffirm its dominant parliamentary control. For the opposition, even a closer-than-expected result would be touted as proof of growing cohesion among its ranks.
Likely outcome?
Given the current numbers, CP Radhakrishnan appears strongly positioned to become India’s next vice-president. However, the secrecy of the ballot and the possibility of cross-voting always leave room for surprises. By the end of September 9, India will know whether the numbers held or if Justice Reddy managed to script an unexpected twist.

Why a new election was needed Vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down on July 21, citing health reasons. The candidates in fray CP Radhakrishnan: NDA’s Pick The NDA has fielded CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. B Sudarshan Reddy: INDIA Bloc’s challenger The opposition INDIA bloc has united behind Justice (Retd.) B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge who also served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court and later became Goa’s first Lokayukta. Who is B Sudershan Reddy? All about INDIA bloc's candidate for Vice Presidential post

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday (Jul 18) announced its formal exit from the INDIA bloc, a coalition of nearly three dozen Opposition parties, citing the bloc's failure "to stay united and take steps to further its agenda" after the 2024 general elections. The AAP's withdrawal comes just a day before a scheduled INDIA bloc meeting and days ahead of the scheduled beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament. The party sought to blame the Indian National Congress (INC) for its unceremonious exit from the alliance that was formed in July 2023 to take on the BJP-led NDA.
The exit announcement
Announcing the decision from his Delhi residence, AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh squarely blamed the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting its responsibility as the bloc's largest constituent. "The AAP is not a part of the INDIA alliance, though we will continue to strongly raise public issues in Parliament, oppose the government whenever we believe it is in the wrong," he said. He added that AAP would now contest all future elections, including the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, on its own.He further said that the "INDIA alliance should hold its meetings and take whatever decisions it wants to take". Singh said that the Congress party failed to keep the Opposition united after 2024. "The INDIA bloc did not take steps to further its agenda, did not hold any meetings after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The largest party in the alliance is Congress. But did it play its role to keep the parties united?" Singh asked.
AAP vs Congress
Though AAP and Congress had forged a tactical understanding in states like Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Goa and Chandigarh during the Lok Sabha elections, relations between the two have remained frosty. In the recent 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, both parties contested the elections separately and took frequent potshots at each other during the campaign.Despite this, AAP insists it will continue to oppose the BJP in Parliament and raise key public issues, even if outside the INDIA fold. "We have always played the role of a strong opposition and will continue to do that," Singh said.
Congress slams AAP's “double game”
Responding to the announcement, Congress leader and Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said AAP's departure would, in fact, "strengthen the alliance," and accused the party of "playing a double game"."AAP's exit will only strengthen the INDIA alliance by removing ambiguity. Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the clear and credible face of the fight to protect India's Constitution, democracy, and secular ethos... In contrast, AAP was always playing a double game. Kejriwal has publicly appealed to Congress workers to defect to AAP, exposing his intentions. Rather than fighting BJP, AAP consistently targeted Congress to weaken the larger opposition space. With AAP out, INDIA is now free to focus on real, committed partners and present a united, clear alternative to the BJP.

AAP walks out of INDIA bloc, blames Congress for failure to unite Opposition; INC slams 'double game'

Senior Congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram has issued a forewarning for the opposition about the next general elections saying that the future is not so bright for the INDIA alliance, as it seems frail while it is pitted against the ruling BJP, which is so formidable and organised. Speaking at the launch of a book co-authored by senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid in New Delhi, Chidambaram confessed to the uncertainty over the future of the INDIA alliance, and said, “The future is not so bright as Mr Mrityunjay Singh Yadav (the second co-author) says. He seems to feel that the INDIA alliance is still intact. I am not sure. Maybe Salman can answer... because he was part of the negotiating team of the INDIA alliance.”

Chidambaram then sounded out a warning to the Congress and other opposition parties, saying, “In my experience, in my reading of history, there has been no political party which is so formidably organised as the BJP. In every department, it is formidable.” “It is not (just) another political party...”

‘Future of oppn’s INDIA bloc not so bright, BJP formidable...’: Chidambaram forewarns for 2029

The Opposition Alliance, INDIA bloc, is set to introduce a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The motion, to be filed under Article 67(B) of the Indian Constitution, has the backing of several opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Samajwadi Party (SP), reported India Today.

Opposition alleges unfair treatment in Rajya Sabha

The opposition parties have been accusing Dhankhar of showing bias towards the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha. They claim that the Chairman frequently interrupts their speeches, limits debate on important issues, and supports the government during heated discussions.

The Opposition has also raised concerns about Dhankhar making personal comments against its members, which they argue violates parliamentary procedures. These actions have contributed to rising tensions between the Chairman and opposition lawmakers.

Rajya Sabha session becomes chaotic

The move to file the no-confidence motion comes after a turbulent Rajya Sabha session on Monday (Dec. 9), where frequent disruptions occurred due to intense exchanges between the BJP and the opposition. The BJP accused senior Congress leaders of conspiring with billionaire George Soros to destabilise the country, fuelling the growing tension.

Chairman Dhankhar warned that the functioning of the "deep state" could be more damaging to the nation than the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the disruptions, Dhankhar attempted to restore order by holding a meeting between the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to address the ongoing tensions. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to ensure the smooth functioning of the Rajya Sabha, with both sides agreeing to meet again on December 10 to continue discussions.

He said, "The purpose of that meeting was to ensure that the House runs smoothly. Both sides had a frank discussion, and they signalled two things. One, that integrity, and sovereignty of the nation are sacred for us. We cannot allow any forces within the country or outside to sacrilege our unity, our integrity and our sovereignty."

The NC-Congress alliance won a majority in the recent JK elections with a total of 48 seats out of 90—42 for the NC and six for Congress. Abdullah's election as the leader of the NC legislature party marks his second term as chief minister.

However, this time, he will be governing a Union Territory without the special status that Jammu and Kashmir once held.

As he prepares to take office, Abdullah faces significant challenges, particularly in navigating the balance of power with the Lieutenant Governor, who wields considerable authority in the UT system.

Delivering on the promises made by the INDIA alliance during the campaign will be paramount as he seeks to address the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The oath-taking ceremony will take place at the SKICC on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, where elaborate security and other arrangements are being made.

Assembly bypoll results 2024: INDIA bloc wins big, bags 10 of 13 seats; BJP manages just two

The Indian Parliament is gearing up for the next key battle among the rival political groups as the new Lok Sabha settles in: The election for the post of Deputy Speaker.

After their failed bid to capture the Speaker's post, the opposition INDIA bloc is now eyeing the post of deputy s[eaker, with rumours doing rounds that the Member of Parliament (MP) from Ayodhya (Faizabad) seat Awadhesh Prasad may be nominated for the key post.

Who is Awadhesh Prasad?

Awadhesh Prasad hails from Uttar Pradesh-based Samajwadi Party (SP). His victory in the recently concluded general elections became the talk of the town as he conquered a seat where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) inaugurated the grand Ram Temple just months ago.

If the INDIA bloc agrees to back Awadhesh as their joint candidate for the Deputy Speaker post, the BJP would be facing a candidate with strong political and symbolic capability.

If the INDIA bloc manages to get its candidate elected to the post, it would be considered a big win for the loosely-held alliance and a big setback for the BJP.
