Speaking in Kabul, Imran Khan promised to 'reduce violence' in Afghanistan. WION's Molly Gambhir asks: Will Pakistan reduce violence in Kashmir as well? Is it trying to fool the European Union with such tall promises?

Gravitas: Pak PM promises to reduce violence in Afghanistan

Terming Pakistan a "producer, sponsor and exporter of terrorism", scores of people on Thursday took to the streets of Kabul to protest against Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan`s maiden visit to Afghanistan.

The demonstrators were seen carrying banners and pamphlets denouncing Pakistan`s "hypocritic policy". They raised slogans against Pakistan and Khan.

One of the banners read: "Pakistan producer sponsor and exporter of terrorism". Similar protests were also reported in southeastern Paktia and Khost provinces against Khan`s visit.

Imran Khan arrived in Kabul on Thursday on his first official visit to meet with President Ashraf Ghani and other Afghan leaders to discuss the Afghan peace process and bilateral ties.

His visit comes at a time when the country is witnessing an escalation of violence despite ongoing talks between the Afghan government and Taliban in Doha.

Pakistan has been long blamed for abetting terrorists and creating instability in the war-torn nation. Though Islamabad has claimed that it supports peace in Afghanistan, experts believe Pakistan has backed the Taliban which has killed thousands of innocent civilians.

Experts have accused Pakistan of giving asylum to terrorists hiding from Afghan forces and sending fighters to support the Taliban.

According to a report by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), around 6,500 Pakistan terrorists are operating in Afghanistan most of them belonging to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The 26th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team concerning ISIS, al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities stated that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a "large terrorist group present in Afghanistan", has claimed responsibility for various high-profile attacks in Pakistan and has facilitated others by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar and Lahskhar-e-Islam, the report said.

Recently, a European think tank--European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS)-- in a report had said that Pakistan is involved in stoking the present escalation of Taliban violence in Afghanistan.

"If Pakistan possessed enough leverage over the Taliban to get it to the negotiating table with the US, it certainly should have the clout to get the Taliban to eschew violence at a time when such violence is threatening to tear apart the US-Taliban agreement that was consequently reached," the think tank reported.

The think tank also cited papers written by the US-based Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which interestingly, touched upon Pakistan`s role in stoking instability in Afghanistan stated, "The Taliban`s Quetta Shura, or senior military leadership council, continues to reside in Pakistan, as do the Taliban's regional shuras that support the Afghan war... If Pakistan is unhelpful--or even counterproductive--in preventing stalled negotiations, the United States could consider suspending or terminating Pakistan`s non-North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (non-NATO) ally status, which offers military and financial advantages that generally are not available to non-NATO countries."

Global technology companies have told the Pakistan government that its "draconian" data regulations would make it extremely difficult for them to continue their operations, two days after the IT ministry notified rules to define how social media will be governed in the country, according to a media report on Friday.

Under the new rules announced by the Ministry of Information and Technology on Wednesday, social media companies and internet service providers shall provide the designated investigation agency with any information or data is decrypted, readable and comprehensible format, the Dawn newspaper reported.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Imran Khan promised to initiate a ''broad-based'' consultation on content regulation after a strong backlash from stakeholders over the release of formally known as the Citizen Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules 2020.

''The consultation that was announced in February never occurred,'' AIC managing director Jeff Paine regretted in the statement.
The tech companies warned that the rules would make it extremely difficult for the AIC members to make their services available to Pakistani users and businesses.

''The draconian data localisation requirements will damage the ability of people to access a free and open internet and shut Pakistan's digital economy off from the rest of the world,'' the AIC said.

Since February when the rules were first released, the AIC has repeatedly urged the government to adopt a comprehensive consultation strategy.

Earlier in October, the AIC had expressed its reservations over the consultation process in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Khan.

''The lack of transparency on the consultation, an abbreviated consultation process, and strict local office requirements for online platforms are very concerning,'' Paine had stated.

''The consultation process therefore appears to have lost credibility,'' it said.

AIC has said if Pakistan wanted to be an attractive destination for technology investment and realise its goal of digital transformation, then it should work with industry on practical, clear rules that protect the benefits of the internet and keep people safe from harm.
Pakistani social media users and rights groups have already rejected the latest notification of the rules by the government.

'Draconian' data regulations will make operations difficult in Pakistan: Tech firms to government

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan visited war-torn neighbour Afghanistan on Thursday, where he vowed to help reduce spiralling violence and push for a ceasefire between the Taliban and Afghan forces.

Khan's maiden visit to Kabul comes amid surging violence across Afghanistan that has worsened despite Afghan government negotiators and the Taliban launching peace talks in the Qatari capital Doha in September.

"We notice with concern that the level of violence despite the talks in Qatar ... is rising," Khan told reporters outside the presidential palace after meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

"Pakistan will do everything, whatever is possible, we will do to help reduce this violence and in fact move towards a ceasefire."

Khan said it was Pakistan that first persuaded the Taliban to talk to Washington in 2018 for negotiations that eventually yielded a withdrawal deal for all foreign forces.

He also credited Islamabad's efforts in helping start the peace talks in Doha.

"We the people and government of Pakistan have only one concern, and that concern is ... that we want peace (in Afghanistan)," Khan said.

Diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan have long been strained.

Many Afghans are furious with their eastern neighbour, which they accuse of meddling in domestic affairs, aiding the Taliban and deliberately destabilising Afghanistan.

Islamabad has long denied such claims, though many senior Taliban leaders live in the city of Quetta in southwest Pakistan and militants have in the past enjoyed relatively unhindered movement across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Pakistan last week accused Afghanistan of allowing India to set up camps on Afghan soil for "training, harbouring and launching terrorists into Pakistan."

Both New Delhi and Kabul deny these charges.

Ghani, whose repeated calls for a ceasefire have been rebuffed by the Taliban, reiterated the need for an immediate truce.

"Violence is not an answer," Ghani said.

Earlier this year, the Taliban announced two short ceasefires to mark the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

The Doha talks, which started September 12, have so far failed to make significant progress.

In the past six months, the Taliban carried out 53 suicide attacks and 1,250 explosions that left 1,210 civilians dead and 2,500 wounded, interior ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said Thursday.

The Afghan government has also blamed the insurgents for a pair of attacks on Kabul education centres that killed dozens of students.

The Taliban have denied involvement, and the attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group.

Pakistan's Imran Khan vows to help stem Afghan bloodshed

Pakistan has signed a revised deal with Russia under which a major bilateral gas pipeline project in the country would be renamed with a major shareholding for Islamabad, according to a media report on Thursday.

Previously known as North South Gas Pipeline, under the new agreement Pakistan would hold 74 per cent stake in the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline project while Russia would have 26 per cent ownership, The Express Tribune reported.

The project envisages supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over a 1,122-km high pressure pipeline from Karachi's Port Qasim to Kasur in Punjab province.

''In the revised project structure, Pakistan will hold 74 per cent shares whereas Russia will have 26 per cent stake,'' the report, citing details from the meeting of the two sides here from November 16-18.

Pakistan's ties with Russia have moved past the bitter Cold War hostilities and the chill in the US-Pakistan relations has further pushed the country towards Russia and China.

The two sides also agreed, in principle, to execute the project through a special purpose company, which would be incorporated in Pakistan.

Earlier, Russia had to build the pipeline on the build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) model and transfer its ownership to Pakistan after 25 years.

Also, Russia had to make 85 per cent of the required expenditure on the project whereas Pakistan had to spend 15 per cent of the capital.

However, the report did not provide the total cost of the ambitious project, said to be one of the largest to be undertaken by Russia in Pakistan.

Now, in the revised model, Pakistan has money on account of Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC) and therefore, it would contribute 74 per cent of the capital and Russia will make 26 per cent of the expenditure.

However, Russia will provide all importable material for the pipeline, the report said.

The Russia-Pakistan technical committee held its first meeting from November 16-18, 2020 in Islamabad on mutual cooperation for the development of a gas pipeline project. Energy ministries of the two countries were present in the meeting.

Discussions were aimed at finalising broad contours and parameters of the project involving construction of a high pressure gas transmission pipeline from Port Qasim (Karachi) to Kasur (Punjab) for the transportation of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) in order to meet gas shortage emanating from growing demand from industrial and domestic consumers.

The recent developments came after a decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the matter of GIDC and availability of GIDC funds for project development.

The two countries signed a protocol relating to revised structure of the agreement with different conditions, the report said.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has slammed the ruling government for delivering a harsh treatment to party president Shehbaz Sharif by continuing to transport him from jail to courts despite the National Assembly Opposition leader suffering from chronic backache.

"We condemn the shifting of Shehbaz Sharif to [General] hospital [for his CT Scan there] in an armoured car instead of being provided a better vehicle, keeping in view his chronic backache problem," said party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb in a statement here on Monday.

Alleging that Prime Minister Imran Khan was doing politics on the health of the opposition leader, she said Khan could only tease Sharif as the Prime Minister took pride in persecuting the opposition while his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was failing to run the country.

She further alleged that the Gilgit-Baltistan election was stolen by incarcerating Sharif. Meanwhile, Dawn reported that PML-N Punjab information Secretary Azma Bukhari stated that the prosperous Punjab of Shehbaz Sharif was now at the mercy of "wheat and sugar mafias" as the government was engaged in "persecution" of the former chief minister and his son Hamza Shehbaz.

She also alleged that the Punjab cabinet meeting held on Monday discussed ways and means to further distress the Sharifs through tactics like forcing the Anti-Corruption Establishment to act against the opposition.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday registered cases against Sharif and his two sons among others in the multibillion rupee sugar scam, under money laundering, fraud, and other charges.

Last year, Sharif and his son Hamza were indicted in connection with the Ramzan Sugar Mills case.

NAB had then alleged that Sharif misused his post as the former Punjab chief minister to build a bridge amounting to rupees five hundred million to facilitate the Ramzan mills.

Corruption, terrorism, and violence have derailed China's belt and road initiative in Pakistan. WION's Palki Sharma tells you why China's projects in Pakistan are now stalled under the Imran Khan government.

Gravitas: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is going nowhere

China is failing in Pakistan. Most investors think twice before funding projects in Pakistan. Corruption, terrorism, violence and security concerns make it a deadly destination. But China kept pumping money to lay its debt trap. Now the strategy may be backfiring. China's projects in Pakistan have been stalled. Thanks to rampant corruption and violent attacks. Imran Khan is now facing heat from the opposition. Because his own officials are in the dock.

Imran Khan wants to be known as a crusader against corruption. Whether it was the sharifs or the Bhutto-Zardaris. Khan has been relentless in his crackdown. But he has been selective in his clampdown. Imran khan hasn't gone after the corrupt officials in his own team with the same enthusiasm.

It began with Lieutenant General Asim Saleem Bajwa. The pizza general, who still remains the chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Fresh reports now indicate that more dirty hands could be in the mix. Two advisers of Imran Khan are allegedly beneficiaries of government subsidies.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan conducted an enquiry. They found irregularities worth over 1.8 billion dollars of subsidies. They were given to 16 independent power producers. This included Razak Dawood and Nadeem Baber Baber.

The same report accuses two Chinese companies of inflating their costs to set up coal plants. The same kind of corruption that Imran khan promised to put a stop to when he took charge.

In 2018, when Imran Khan assumed office he issued an order. Several CPEC projects were put on hold, allegedly over the suspicion of corruption. But since the inner circle of Imran khan has been named in graft complaints, progress has stalled. Violent attacks on Chinese investments and limits on borrowing have added to Islamabad's troubles.

Almost a month ago, 14 security personnel were killed in Gwadar. The city where china is building the deepest seaport in the world.

The outbreak of Wuhan virus has caused further delays.

The pandemic is hurting Pakistan's plans to build Special Economic Zones with China's help. Reports say Chinese companies are facing production delays.

Managing human and material resources is proving to be a struggle, alongside inflated bills.

The Opposition, faced with a barrage of corruption lawsuits, is now breathing down Imran Khan's neck. They have accused the Prime Minister of not expediting key infrastructure projects with China. Imran Khan is struggling to get things back on track. It won't come as a surprise if Beijing decides to dial Pakistani military for help.

Imran Khan's minister faces flak over sexist remarks against Maryam Nawaz

Pakistan federal minister Ali Amin Gandapur has been facing flak for his derogatory remarks about Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz. He apparently said that her "beauty" was due to several "surgeries she got using taxpayers' money".

"She is beautiful, I will speak the truth. But listen to this as well -- she spent tens of millions on surgeries during Nawaz Sharif's two governments, using your tax money to fix herself," Gandapur said while addressing a rally in Gilgit-Baltistan's Shigar, as quoted by Geo News.

Social media in Pakistan, to this end, did not spare the federal minister, terming him a "disgrace".

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman said, "Gandapur’s remarks are insulting. His presence in GB during the polls is a violation of the election’s code of conduct."

But Imran Khan's minister did not stop here.

His special advisor made another derogatory remark -- this time against a renowned political commentator in the country by terming her a "filthy thing" and further disparaged people with liberal ideology as 'libtards'.

"Poor filthy thing .. Asking for an Ali Amin Gandapur kinda response so she can go whine to fellow libtards? How are you such a comprehensive package of all different kinds of filth combined #MadamCessPool," tweeted the Special Assistant to Khan, Sayed Bukhari.

Bukhari's tweet was in response to a political commentator Marvi Sirmed's tweet that read, "One of those moments when PM wasn't at the top, and First Lady wasn't in the room."

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday lashed out at three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif, describing him as a "jackal" who is trying to create "rebellion" in the Army by accusing it of involvement in the country's politics and calling for a change in the military as well as the ISI leadership.

Sharif, the 70-year-old supreme leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the apex court on graft charges, had last month for the first time directly named Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and ISI head Lt Gen Faiz Hameed for interfering in the general elections of 2018 to ensure victory of Khan.

Sharif had made the comments virtually on October 16 during a joint rally organised by the Opposition parties under the banner of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), formed to oust the Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) government.

Prime Minister Khan said that Sharif is sitting in London "like a Jackal" and targeting the Army.

Hitting out at Sharif, Khan said the former prime minister was ?trying to stir up a rebellion in the Pakistan Army by alleging it is involved in politics and calling for changing the Army and ISI chiefs," Khan said while addressing a public gathering in Mingora in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

The powerful army, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.

However, the Army has denied meddling in the country's politics. Prime Minister Khan also denies that the Army helped him win the election in 2018.

Khan said that Sharif had run away from the country under the pretext of illness, adding that he was a "money worshipper" and had amassed his wealth by looting the country, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The PML-N chief, currently out on bail, is facing multiple corruption charges. The Islamabad High Court had allowed him to go to London for medical treatment in November last year for a period of eight weeks for medical treatment. But he did not come back, while his lawyers told the court that he was still recovering.

Khan also slammed Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz for openly accusing the Army of interfering in politics.

She is taking advantage of being a woman because women are given respect in Pakistan, he said.

"Nawaz Sharif and his sons cannot dare attack the Pakistan Army in the country and this is why they have fled abroad. Since Maryam Nawaz knows that we will not send her behind bars because she is a woman, she has started spewing venom against the Army," he said.

Khan said Pakistanis would never allow corrupt politicians to hurl allegations against the Army.

Rebuking the "corrupt political leaders who have gathered under the Pakistan Democratic Movement", Khan said a group of thieves and looters have gathered who were asking for special concessions after looting the country.

"Two major political parties looted the country during the past 30 years but now it is a decisive time to take action against the corrupt and looters," he claimed.

This story is set in 'the land of the pure'. A land where terrorists roam freely. A land where ministers hail terror attack in parliament. The leader of this land is quick to preach others on secularism and minority rights. But what does he practise? This is about Pakistan and its Prime Minister Imran Khan Niazi. He has been making a lot of news of late.

Imran Khan has been giving sermons in leadership to Emmanuel Macron. He has been trying to teach France how to treat minorities.. He has always preached India on how to treat minorities. So we decided to take a look at how minorities in Pakistan are doing.

Raja Lal is the father of Arzoo Raja. A 13-year-old Christian girl who has been missing since October 13. She was abducted in broad daylight outside her house in Karachi's railway colony. The local police say that she converted to Islam on her own free will and has married her 44-year-old abductor. A certain Ali Azhar. They say they have proof.

But the girl's parents say that this was signed under duress. The police say it wasn't. They are not even paying heed to the fact that the girl is just 13-years-old. Her birth certificate mentions her date of birth to be in the month of July in 2007. The evidence is undeniable. But the Karachi police is still in denial.

Moreover, On October 27, Sindh High Court validated Arzoo's marriage to her abductor. Arzoo's mother was not allowed inside the courtroom. She begged and cried as the court made a mockery of the law.

This is the state of minorities in Pakistan. This is not a one-off incident.

In August this year, another Christian girl was abducted and married off in a similar fashion. Her name was Marya Shahbaz. She was just 14 years old. Her story is the same. Kidnapped, converted, forcefully married and ordered to stay with her abductor. Her whereabouts are still unknown. Her parents are still fighting for justice.

Fear has become a daily reality for Christians in Pakistan. They constitute just 2 per cent of Pakistan's population. But they are facing increasing discrimination and violence by the majority Muslims. A measure of how they are being treated can be gauged from the stories of Arzoo and Marya. Two minority girls failed by the judicial system of Pakistan. A system, where judgments are passed based on Islamic interpretations of the law.

All this while, Pakistan chases wrong priorities, panders to extremists, and lectures western countries on how to treat their minorities.
