Pakistan: Imran Khan receives another shock after close aide Shireen Mazari quits party

Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was rocked by a spree of resignations of senior leadership on May 24. Among others, Nadia Sher Khan, a former PTI lawmaker from Imran Khan's home state of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, announced that she was resigning from the party.

What did Fawad Chaudhry, Asad Umar say?

Both top leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), despite their fierce defence of Imran Khan's political positioning within Pakistan's complex civilian-military nexus of mutual dependence, stated May 9 vandalism as the reason behind their resignation.

"After my earlier statement where I unequivocally condemned the 9th May incidents, I have decided to take a break from politics. Therefore, I have resigned from my party position and parting ways with Imran Khan," Chaudhry wrote in a tweet on Wednesday evening.

Pakistani politics has gone through post prime minister Imran Khan went on attack mode against the current coalition government. Scathing attacks were launched even against Pakistan's all-powerful Army now the politics of polarization culminated in violent protests on the 9th of May, when Imran's arrest prompted a nationwide unrest the past one year also changed the manner in which national politics trickled down to the Grassroots levels in Pakistan. The medium of choice this time was social media not that social media in Pakistan was immune from political discussions before April last year but it was not as indispensable as it is now apart from existing platforms like Twitter and Facebook there was another platform which came to the fore it was TikTok which increasingly became a forum for political polarization in fact it has now silently become a forum for serious debate on some of the most contentious issues of the South Asian Nation.

Pakistan'S former prime minister and Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan honoured the courageous women fighting for what he called "real freedom" in a video he shared on his social media handle on Friday but is now facing wrath as a fact-checking report suggests that the images were apparently fake and AI-generated.

The video includes images and footage that show the protests that broke out between PTI supporters and police officers when the former premier was taken into custody earlier this month in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust issue.

Pakistan might be on the path of total dictatorship, the citizens rued on Friday after Veterans of Pakistan (VOP) released a letter condemning the arrest of family members of late Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asif Nawaz Janjua.

The letter noted that on Thursday (May 18), family members of the former COAS were picked up from their official residence in Lahore Cantt. by the Punjab police.

"On 18 May 2023, family members of Late COAS Lt. Gen Asif Nawaz Janjua were picked up by Punjab Police from their residence in Lahore Cantt and detained overnight," read the letter.

The group called the arrest an 'atrocious act' that violated the fundamental rights and several 'international conventions' that Pakistan is a signatory to.

"Apropos to COAS remarks about Veterans at various forums, this high-handedness is a measure of what treatment Veterans of the Armed Forces could expect from such aggressive and blatant warning shots."

The veterans threatened to mobilise the public against the military if justice was not served 'expeditiously' to the family members.

"Should justice not be served expeditiously or it be applied selectively, the Veterans as citizens of Pakistan will not hesitate to exercise their constitutional rights to mobilize all over Pakistan against such draconian law enforcement."

Pakistan might be on the path of total dictatorship, the citizens rued on Friday after Veterans of Pakistan (VOP) released a letter condemning the arrest of family members of late Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asif Nawaz Janjua.

"Apropos to COAS remarks about Veterans at various forums, this high-handedness is a measure of what treatment Veterans of the Armed Forces could expect from such aggressive and blatant warning shots." The veterans threatened to mobilise the public against the military if justice was not served 'expeditiously' to the family members. "Should justice not be served expeditiously or it be applied selectively, the Veterans as citizens of Pakistan will not hesitate to exercise their constitutional rights to mobilize all over Pakistan against such draconian law enforcement." Last night, family members of late COAS Asif Nawaz Janjua were picked up from Lahore Cantt, from the legendary Chief’s residence, without arrest warrants. This is unprecedented. This is damning. And it must be taken notice of by @OfficialDGISPR, the ISI, the MI and the Chief… pic.twitter.com/UdAj8nftSK — Wajahat S. "Time for veterans to wake up. They are feeling for the first time the importance of 'veil of ignorance'" Meanwhile, others noted a strange pattern, "Out of the 11 former Army Chiefs, 6 are living. This includes Gen Aslam Beg, Gen Waleed Kakar, & Gen Karamat. Is this why they haven’t said anything? Are they too scared to speak out, or do they simply not feel the need to?" Jai Parkash, a renowned Hindu leader and minority member of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, resigned on Friday, becoming the latest politician to quit the former prime minister's party in the aftermath of the May 9 attack on military installations and government buildings.

Following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party chairman, Imran Khan, on May 9, violent protests erupted in various locations across the nation, resulting in the destruction of several government-owned properties, reports news agency PTI.

Imran Khan supporters stormed the Pakistan Army's General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, while the Corps Commander House in Lahore was set on fire.

In the 2018 general election, Jai Parkash was elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of the PTI party on a reserved seat for minorities.

Reasons for Jai Parkash's resignation

In a statement to the media on Friday, the PTI minority wing president strongly criticised the May 9 protests, saying, "Pakistan exists because of the army, and we exist because of Pakistan."

"I had no intention to leave the party till May 8," he was quoted as saying by Samaa TV, adding that he was quitting without any pressure.

On Monday, PTI's former Sindh governor Imran Ismail said that Jai Parkash was abducted from his home by "40 masked men."

Mubeen Khilji, a provincial minister in the PTI administration, resigned from the former prime minister's party earlier on Friday. Khilji stated at a news conference that he was leaving the PTI due to the May 9 violence.

"We wanted peaceful protests," he remarked, criticising the destruction that followed Imran Khan's imprisonment.

Police have confirmed 10 deaths in the violent skirmishes, however Imran Khan's party claimed 40 of its workers were killed in firing by security forces.

On Monday, the senior military brass committed to bring the arsonists who assaulted the civil and military institutions to justice through prosecution under strict Pakistani laws such as the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secrets Act.

Over 7,000 PTI workers have been detained across Pakistan, with 4,000 of them from Punjab state.

Imran Khan, a 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, was ousted from office in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he said was part of a US-led conspiracy to destabilise him due to his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China, and Afghanistan.

Punjab Police raided former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's Zaman Park residence to arrest 'terrorists', but only returned with 'water and biscuits'. The claims were made by Khan's chief security officer Iftikhar Ghuman after the police came knocking on Friday, having obtained warrants to conduct a detailed search at Khan's residence. "I think they have understood that there is nothing here. The only thing they got here was water and biscuits," Ghuman told reporters after the search operation. "We opened the doors of the house for them in front of you. Now you ask them what they got," he added. Earlier this week, the Punjab government claimed that Khan and his Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party members were harbouring "30 to 40 terrorists" in the residential property. Khan was given an ultimatum of 24 hours to hand over the accused but no action was taken, even after the expiry of the deadline. Notably, a team comprising the likes of Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, DIG Operations Sadiq Dogar, Lahore Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider and SSP Operations Sohaib amongst others reached Khan's residence to conduct the search operation. Meanwhile, the Lahore administration also brought up heavy machinery to remove encroachments outside the PTI chairman's house. Khan is currently facing a litany of cases with charges ranging from corruption to terrorism. After the Toshakhana corruption case hearing was adjourned till next month, Khan, on Friday received another bout of relief after his interim pre-arrest bail was extended by Lahore's anti-terrorism court till June 2 in three terrorism-related cases.
