Israel 'ground forces' conduct another night raid in Gaza, IDF releases aerial footage

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) recently made use of the 'Iron Sting' precision munition system for the first time in a military operation. The IDF's elite Maglan Unit used this innovative technology to target Hamas rocket launchers in the Gaza Strip, demonstrating a new level of precision and effectiveness.

This deployment comes at a crucial time when Israel faces allegations of civilian casualties in Gaza following a barbaric Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7.

The 'Iron Sting' system was born out of collaborative efforts between the Israeli military and the renowned defence firm, Elbit Systems.

Within the Israeli military, it was the Directorate of Defence Research and Development in the Ministry of Defence and the Israel Defence Force's Ground Forces that spearheaded its development.

Elbit Systems, a key player in the Israeli defence industry, played a vital role in shaping the 'Iron Sting' into a reality.

What are its features?

The 'Iron Sting' stands out as a precision laser and GPS-guided mortar munition. Its primary ammunition is 120mm mortar rounds, and it boasts remarkable accuracy.

This munition system is designed to target a wide range of distances, with an impeccable range spanning from 1 to 12 kilometres, contingent on the ammunition used. The most impressive feature is that the 'Iron Sting' is suitable for deployment in both urban environments and open terrains, rendering it a versatile solution.

Another feature is the ability to penetrate double-reinforced concrete, making it a formidable force in urban warfare. This capability gives Israeli forces a significant advantage in operations that demand precision and minimal collateral damage.

A decade in the making

Yaniv Rotem, the head of the Defence Ministry's Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, told the Times of Israel, that the 'Iron Sting' had been in development for a decade.

He described it as "groundbreaking" and explained that it empowers infantry units with a level of accuracy that was previously achievable only through missiles and airborne weaponry.

The testing phase of this groundbreaking system concluded in March 2021, setting the stage for its operational debut.

During IDF's intense bombing in Gaza, the 'Iron Sting' was showcased as an "innovative and accurate mortar bomb." The IDF even shared a video showing the 120mm mortar in action, accurately targeting and neutralising an enemy rocket launcher, thereby minimising the risk to civilians.

Then-defence minister Benny Gantz, speaking in March, acknowledged the transformative potential of the 'Iron Sting.' He stated that this system "changes the battlefield" by equipping Israeli forces with more accurate and effective means, ushering in a new era of precision warfare.

The Israeli military has faced the complex challenge of battling Palestinian militants in the densely populated Gaza Strip while simultaneously preparing for potential conflicts with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

This dual threat landscape necessitates innovative solutions that minimise civilian casualties and collateral damage, making the 'Iron Sting' system all the more relevant.

Controversial history

The use of precision munitions and advanced weaponry by Israel has often stirred controversy. The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court launched a preliminary investigation into possible war crimes by Israel during its 2014 conflict in Gaza, where hundreds of civilians lost their lives. This ongoing scrutiny highlights the importance of developing and using technologies that can differentiate between combatants and non-combatants, minimising the risk to innocent lives.

Amid escalating tensions and violence, it is widely anticipated that Israel will launch a ground offensive in Gaza in response to Hamas's October 7 attack into southern Israeli communities.

The massing of tanks and troops at the Gaza border, along with increased airstrikes, is indicative of Israel's readiness to engage in the next stages of the conflict.

Human toll

The ongoing violence has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides. In Israel, over 1,400 people have been killed, primarily civilians who were victims of the initial Hamas attack. Additionally, over 222 individuals were captured and taken back to Gaza, including foreign nationals. Two Americans were released in a recent development.

On the Palestinian side, more than 5,000 individuals, including around 2,000 minors and 1,100 women, have lost their lives. These casualties underscore the urgency of finding ways to mitigate the human toll of conflicts in the region.

This current war marks the deadliest of five wars fought between Israel and Hamas in the last 15 years.

Explained | What is Iron Sting, the system that can put Israel ahead of Hamas in the war?

Early Wednesday (Oct 25), Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the Israeli military was preparing for a ground operation in Gaza. Media reports also suggested that the Jewish nation has delayed its operation following the USA’s demand.

The US said it was rushing to reinforce Israel and its strategic sites across West Asia as it braces for a wider conflict.

So, let’s understand how things could turn out once the Israeli forces get the green light.

Three-phase operation

The IDF is planning a three-phase operation in the Gaza Strip. In the first phase, which is already going on, intense air bombardment and aerial assault are being employed to destroy Hamas’ infrastructure and neutralise terrorists.

Media reports also suggested that the Jewish nation has delayed its operation following the USA’s demand. The US said it was rushing to reinforce Israel and its strategic sites across West Asia as it braces for a wider conflict. So, let’s understand how things could turn out once the Israeli forces get the green light. Three-phase operation The IDF is planning a three-phase operation in the Gaza Strip. In the first phase, which is already going on, intense air bombardment and aerial assault are being employed to destroy Hamas’ infrastructure and neutralise terrorists. In preparation for the next stages of combat, the IDF operated in northern Gaza. IDF tanks & infantry struck numerous terrorist cells, infrastructure and anti-tank missile launch posts. As IDF mulls ground operation in Gaza, here is what post-war scenario might look like

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) International Spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner has emphasised that they are currently awaiting the "green light" from the government for a ground offensive in Gaza. Since the October 7th terror attack by Hamas, which claimed the lives of 1,400 Israelis and led to numerous hostages, Israel has remained on high alert.

Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal from Tel Aviv, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner explained, "If the ground offensive is instructed and approved by the government, we will be prepared to mobilize. The reservists are now being equipped, trained, and given specific tasks in anticipation of that ground offensive."

In response to the situation in the Gaza Strip resulting from what Israel says are actions to deal with Hamas hideouts, Lerner noted, "We've instructed much of the population in the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate and move towards the south. I'm happy to report that we have seen a massive number of people who have actually followed our instructions, despite Hamas' efforts to prevent them."

The continuous Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have raised significant concerns about the humanitarian situation, with the United Nations and other world leaders expressing their worries. The IDF spokesperson also pointed out that Hamas is currently in a "state of disarray" adding, "They will definitely be in shock when we get to them."

Here is the full interview:

WION: We know there is a buildup at Gaza so can we expect a ground offensive very soon?

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: The IDF is now on its 14th day of its offensive to destroy Hamas, to dismantle its capabilities to seek out pursue its leaders and terrorists. Indeed in the course of the last 14 days the IDF has recruited some 300,000 reservists. Their role if instructed to will be across the various services of the IDF and also including the ground offensive. If the ground offensive is instructed and approved by the government, we will be prepared to mobilize. The reservists are now being equipped and trained and given specific tasks in an anticipation for that ground offensive and that is what they are preparing for. Indeed, it does appear that that is the way forward. But we are as I said, waiting for the green light from the government in order to mobilize. Currently we are striking Hamas in its entirety, seeking out its leaders, destroying its operational capabilities, its command and control positions. And of course hunting down its leaders in the perpetrators of the atrocities of the seventh of October.

WION: Sir, it has been over a week since the terror attack happened. How much have you been able to neutralise Hamas in Gaza strip?

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: We have struck and targeted hundreds of different targets, including leaders, including terrorists, including planners including operators including the cabinet of the Hamas's terrorist government. And indeed, we understand that they are in a state of disarray as an organization, as a governing body. But they are hiding they're hiding behind the people of Gaza. They are willing to sacrifice the people of Gaza because they have no regard for human life, Israeli or Palestinian. So our understanding is that they are in a state of disarray. They haven't got a clue what is going on above ground. They will definitely be in shock when we get to them. But we will, we are determined to defeat them. We did not open this war, but we will win it.

WION: Right now we Hamas the Southern Front is open but we see Activities on the Northern Front as well with Hezbollah planning some kind of offensive or attack. How do you plan to deal with Hezbollah if it plans to open Northern front as well?

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: Absolutely, we've seen over the last 14 days, a constant increase in hostilities by Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations operating in Lebanon. We've seen anti tank guided missiles fired and as we've seen mortars, we've seen rockets, we've seen sniper fire and we've seen machine gun fire at our forces. We have taken the necessary precautions some of those reservists that have been called up have been sent to reinforce the northern border in order to be prepared for a potential flare up with Hezbollah as well. Their attacks still appear to be on the low scale, which indicates that they are trying to divert our attention from the South to the North. And we understand that Iran is actually behind this effort. We are a strong military. We have great capabilities. We have a professional military, and I would say we can fight on two fronts or multi fronts if required. We don't want to but we are prepared to if we if we are needed.

WION: Coming back to your previous reply, IDF has been targetting Hamas in gaza strip and you talked about the Palestinians as well. What would you say about humanitarian aspects given that there's is an increased pounding of Hamas hideouts by israeli side that can lead to collateral damage as well?

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: So we operate basically, like the Indian military based on three core principles:
1) the principle of distinction between civilians, non combatants and terrorists,
2) the principle of military necessity what is the advantage of the specific strike? What abilities does it take from the enemy?
3) And thirdly, proportionality
And we're constantly balancing out those three components in order to be effective in our efforts in order to try and minimize and keep civilians out of harm's way. We've instructed much of the population in the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate and go towards the south. I'm happy to report that we have seen a huge massive amount of people that have actually listened to us. And that is despite Hamas' efforts to prevent them. Hamas put out public announcements telling people not to evacuate. When people went, when they saw that people weren't listening to them, they erected checkpoints, physical checkpoints with terrorists that are trying to prevent them. Even that wasn't successful. So I'm happy to say that people listen to us because they understand that what happened on the seventh of October is unacceptable on any decent human beings understanding. So the people, the decent people of Gaza, have listened to Israel and have head South. Indeed Hamas have no regard for human life, and they will jeopardize the civilian population of Gaza. And our job is to differentiate between those analysis, specifically what we're doing. We've designated a humanitarian zone in the southwest of the Gaza strip in Al-Mawasi area. And our operations, when we need to strike in the Gaza Strip are much more precision intelligence based against specific targets in order to eliminate specific threats. So I would say that when we look at the operation, and when we look at what we're doing, to defeat and destroy us, we are doing it in a way that sends a clear message to the people of Gaza. You are not our enemy. Hamas is our enemy. And that is what we're doing.

WION: How much IDF casualities have been there since the attacks?

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: So, we have, I think the last number is 304 in IDF fatalities in this attack. Of course, there are 203 hostages being held by Hamas. We still have over 100 people that are unaccounted for. So that number might go up and of course, Hamas butchered, murdered and massacred over 1400 people, Israelis, men, women, children, the elderly, they have no regard for anybody. And they just came on the mass mass mass murder of anybody that they found. In that time, they have also fired some 7000 rockets at Israel and jeopardised Israeli security, safety and the safety of the people from Haifa although in the north all the way down to the south. And they're continuing their attacks against us, and we are continuing our strikes against them. We have I can say that we are every time we meet a terrorist on the grounds, the terrorist is killed in the exchange. That is what we are doing. We are restoring safety and security. I can say even yesterday we still found a Palestinian terrorists in Israel's territory 13 days after the initial attack. So we are constantly securing the border, closing the breaches that they penetrated through, preventing terrorists from escaping back to the Gaza Strip, and preventing further infiltration from the Gaza strip into Israeli communities.

WION: One thing we have noticed that Hamas is attacking even though Iron Dome is working well. How come Hamas still has the capability to attack....

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: Well of course the Iron Dome isn't foolproof, but it is a very effective mechanism in order to safeguard and save civilians. Hamas has accumulated a huge amount of rockets, and they are continuing to....; and I think the basic working assumption is even when ground offensive takes place. They will continue to try and launch rockets. What we have seen as a decline in the amount of rockets that they're firing daily, which suggests that they are being pursued and have not got the comfort to launch them as freely as before. But yes, indeed they still have this arsenal. They will try and challenge us at each age period. This is the reason or one of the reasons or another part of the equation, why we need to change the paradigm so that this organization cannot fire rockets on us and not butcher our babies, can never adopt us again, and this is why we need to change the entire system.

WION: When do you see hostages being released.....?

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner: So unfortunately, I have nothing to report on this issue as I said the to the number of 203 is the number that could actually go up. The working assumption is that they're alive. And I would add that we expect Hamas to take care of their well being, they need to be released and be released now. Prime Minister Netanyahu has demanded that they have the International Committee of the Red Cross have access to the to the hostages. But I don't want to comment beyond that because I don't want to jeopardize them or the families of 203 people that are in despair and their life has been torn into pieces in the aftermath of this attack for the last 14 days. So I don't want to comment on that. And jeopardize anything we can actually bring them home.

Exclusive | IDF awaits approval for ground offensive; 300,000 reservists recruited, says spox Peter Lerner

The Israeli army on Wednesday (Oct 17) said it had credible "evidence" that terrorists in Gaza Strip were responsible for the blast at a hospital. The blast which allegedly killed hundreds triggered global condemnation and sparked protests across the Middle East.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released the findings of a detailed probe into the alleged attack, claiming that the strike was not carried out by them.

Citing the aerial footage analysis, the IDF further alleged that the number of casualties has been inflated.

The Israel Army showed before and after footage and said nearby buildings suffered no structural damage or cratering which would have been seen in case of any aerial munition.

To support their claims of misfiring, IDF released an audio recording of Hamas operatives who were apparently talking about a misfired rocket causing the hospital blast.

US President Joe Biden, who is visiting Israel, echoed what Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed on the blast that, according to Palestinian officials, killed around 500 people and injured many as claimed by Hamas health ministry. Notably, the death toll is not confirmed yet.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari told a press conference in Tel Aviv, "The evidence — which we are sharing with you all — confirms that the explosion at the hospital in Gaza was caused by an Islamic Jihad rocket that misfired."

Hagari said, "There was no IDF (Israeli army) fire by land, sea or air that hit the hospital."

"Our radar system tracked missiles fired by terrorists in Gaza at the time of the explosion and the trajectory analysis of the rockets shows the rockets were fired in close proximity to the hospital," he added.

The strike led to claims and counterclaims as the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which runs the territory, blamed Israel.

Hamas fired back at Israel's latest comments about the strike, saying "its outrageous lies do not deceive anyone".

In a statement, Hamas said that Israel "is directly responsible for this horrific massacre which was carried out... with American weapons only the occupation possesses".

Biden-Netanyahu meet

After landing in Tel Aviv, Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that Hamas had brought "only suffering". Interestingly, he also blamed the hospital attack on the "other team", meaning the Palestinian militants.

"I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion at the hospital in Gaza yesterday. And based on what I've seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you," Biden said.

Listen to the terrorists as they realize this themselves: pic.twitter.com/u7WyU8Rxwz — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) October 18, 2023 × US President Joe Biden, who is visiting Israel, echoed what Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed on the blast that, according to Palestinian officials, killed around 500 people and injured many as claimed by Hamas health ministry. Notably, the death toll is not confirmed yet. Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari told a press conference in Tel Aviv, "The evidence — which we are sharing with you all — confirms that the explosion at the hospital in Gaza was caused by an Islamic Jihad rocket that misfired." Hagari said, "There was no IDF (Israeli army) fire by land, sea or air that hit the hospital." "Our radar system tracked missiles fired by terrorists in Gaza at the time of the explosion and the trajectory analysis of the rockets shows the rockets were fired in close proximity to the hospital," he added. Also read: It's a massacre: Gaza hospital horror unveiled The strike led to claims and counterclaims as the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which runs the territory, blamed Israel. Hamas fired back at Israel's latest comments about the strike, saying "its outrageous lies do not deceive anyone". In a statement, Hamas said that Israel "is directly responsible for this horrific massacre which was carried out... with American weapons only the occupation possesses". Biden-Netanyahu meet After landing in Tel Aviv, Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that Hamas had brought "only suffering". Interestingly, he also blamed the hospital attack on the "other team", meaning the Palestinian militants. "I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion at the hospital in Gaza yesterday. And based on what I've seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you," Biden said. "But there's a lot of people out there not sure so we have to overcome a lot of things," Biden added. Gaza hospital blast: Israel releases 'evidence' to blame terrorists for 'misfired' rocket

The Palestinian group Hamas unleashed terror on Israeli civilians through surprise attacks, marking a disturbing escalation of violence in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, on October 7. It was a three-pronged assault, with Hamas terrorists striking from land, sea, and air, using guns and rockets to target both Israeli civilians and the military.

Now, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) has released raw Point of View (PoV) footage from a recovered camera of a terrorist, offering a chilling first-person perspective of the violence.

The video documented an armed Hamas operative ambushing an Israeli checkpoint and subsequently attacking Israelis with assault rifles. The confrontation ultimately led to the operative's demise at the hands of Israeli security forces.

Israel-Hamas war: Israeli army claims to have killed two Hamas commanders who led attack

Israel's military has issued an order for the evacuation of all civilians residing in Gaza City and the northern region of the Gaza Strip in anticipation of a potential ground offensive in the besieged enclave.

This directive was issued on Friday (Oct 13) following a warning received by the United Nations from Israel, instructing the evacuation of 1.1 million people living in the north of Gaza within a 24-hour period.

The order, which comes on the seventh day of an ongoing war and a declared "total blockade" by Israel, instructs the residents of Gaza City to relocate further south within the Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal area with a population of around 2.3 million.

As per the flyer accessed by WION which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) dropped from planes into Gaza, the IDF has urged civilians to move to the south of Gaza, and not return to their homes until further notice.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in his latest address to the nation said: "We will eliminate Hamas, we will defeat Hamas. It will take time." "This is just the beginning. Our enemies have only just begun to pay the price but I won't go into detail," said Netanyahu as the war between Hamas and Israel entered the seventh day on Saturday, October 14. IDF are 'fighting like lions': Netanyahu Netanyahu described Israel's retaliatory response as 'fight for the homeland', adding that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are "fighting like lions.” "Much more will be told of the heroism of our people in the dark days of deep pain of that cursed Shabbat — stories that will be etched into Israel’s identity," he said. Shortly after Netanyahu's address, Opposition chairman Yair Lapid, who is also the part of Israel's 'unity government', slammed Netanyahu for the purported absence of substance in his primetime address. "It is not unacceptable for the prime minister of Israel to send an entire country into a whirlwind of panic while waiting for his statement on Friday night during a time of emergency and then not say anything new either about the families of the abductees, not about the northern front, not about evacuation," Lapid wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
