Amid the ongoing COP27 climate conference at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, German federal police have warned its delegates that they may be getting spied on by the host country’s security agents, said a report by Reuters citing three people with knowledge on the matter.

Meanwhile, Germany has lodged a complaint with the Egyptian government over constant unwanted monitoring by their security agents and accused them of monitoring and filming events at the country’s pavilion at the summit, said a report by the German press agency (DPA).

On the other hand, an email sent on November 12 by the German police warned its delegates of “overt and covert surveillance through photography and videography” by Egyptian security agents, said one of the people quoting the email to Reuters. Meanwhile, two officials have confirmed the issuance of the warning but did not elaborate on the specifics.

The person quoting the email also said they were warned about their conversations being recorded and possible disruptions by the Egyptian state at events organised by Berlin. Furthermore, three German attendees from non-governmental organisations and industry say that they have also been warned by other attendees and delegations of possible surveillance at COP27.

Two NGO members, one from German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation, and another from Climate Action Network, claim that they have on multiple occasions in recent days witnessed being photographed and followed, said Reuters. This comes as Berlin has used their conference area for hosting events focused on human rights situations in Egypt.

Meanwhile, following these allegations Germany’s foreign ministry, in a statement had said, “We expect all participants in the UN climate conference to be able to work and negotiate under safe conditions…This is not just true for the German but for all delegations, as well as representatives of civil society and the media.”

Reportedly, the German pavilion at the summit saw the attendance of activists from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International along with prominent Egyptian activist and film editor, Sanaa Seif who has served several prison terms in the country. Seif is also the sister of a jailed Egyptian-British hunger striker and pro-democracy activist, Alaa Abd el-Fattah.

The Egyptian security sources while speaking to DPA rejected these allegations and said that personnel were present for the security of foreign seminars and activities for the UN team and their role as Egyptians was restricted to security outside the halls and in the city. However, several participants have alleged that the Egyptian staff had insisted on being a part of closed sessions as well.

“It is very obvious that the Egyptian authorities are monitoring human rights activities…The only reason they haven't used physical violence yet is that we're in a UN-controlled area,” said Hossam Bahgat, founder of the human rights organisation, Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), while speaking with DPA.

Amid these allegations in a statement given to the Associated Press, on Sunday, the United Nations climate office confirmed that some of the security officials at the venue are from the host country due to the "scale and complexity of providing security at a large scale event". However, they work under the UN Department for Safety and Security (UN DSS) to assist in "fortifying the venue and ensuring the safety and security of all participants.”

It added, "UN DSS has been made aware of allegations of the Code of Conduct violations and is investigating these reports.” According to the German media report, Egyptian officials arriving in the German area had taken photos, and videos, and even disrupted proceedings on at least two occasions. This comes days after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, had also raised the issue of jailed hunger striker Alaa Abd el-Fattah during his visit to the climate summit.

The prominent activist and blogger has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of spreading false news and has been on hunger strike for over 200 days against his detention and the conditions of the prison. “A decision needs to be taken, a release has to be made possible, so that it doesn't come to it that the hunger striker dies,” said Scholz during a press conference in Egypt.

Germany warns its delegates against Egyptian agents spying on them at COP27: Reports

United Nations Human Rights Council said on Monday (November 14) that it will hold an urgent, special session on Iran. The session will focus on deadly crackdown on protesters protesting Mahsa Amini's death. UNHRC said that the session will be held on November 24.

Mahsa Amini (22) was taken into custody by Iran's morality police for 'inappropriate' attire in the month of September. Her custidial death sparked a nationwide 'anti-hijab' protest which is going on even now. The protesters have even called for downfall of Islamic clerical regime. The government has almost always called protesters 'rioters' and have initiated a brutal crackdown.

UNHRC's announcement of a special session has come just a day after Iran's judiciary handed death sentence to an arrested protester for the first time.

So far, 44 countries, including 17 Council members, have backed the call, the body said.

UN Human Rights Council to hold special session on Iran crackdown

China denied accusations that it runs 'illegal' overseas police stations that a human rights group says are used to track down criminal suspects.

Some pub owners in Germany will not be showing matches of the upcoming Qatar World Cup, saying they took the decision from "an ethical standpoint" given the Gulf state's record on human rights.

Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, has come under intense international pressure for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws. Disquiet over the country's human rights record has led to calls for teams and officials to boycott the games at the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 tournaments.

"Too many human rights were violated and from an ethical standpoint, I can't justify it," Fanny Delaune, owner of "Babel" sports bar in Bonn, told Reuters. "Some understand it and others will watch anyway but ultimately, it's my bar and my decision."

Tobias Epping, who owns "Die Wache" bar, will also do the same. "Not just me but also my regular customers who I asked to vote on Facebook and Instagram decided not to show the World Cup because there was a point when we said 'enough'," he said.

"The number of workers killed went beyond 15,000, stadiums are air conditioned during times like these and you can't even drink a beer which for me as a bar owner obviously is a part of it: no. We can no longer support that. "From an economic point of view: was this a smart decision? Probably not. But at least you can go to a bar with a clean conscience..."

A Guardian newspaper analysis in Feb. 2021 concluded 6,500 South Asian migrants had died in Qatar since 2010 and the International Labour Organisation has said Qatar is not adequately reporting worker deaths. Qatar's World Cup organisers, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), have disputed claims that thousands of people have died during the preparations for the tournament.

Qatar’s government has said its labour system is a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited. A female fan, who did not share her name, said she would support the boycott by the bars.

"Even if Qatar had great stadiums and fantastically paid workers, in any case a World Cup during the winter is stupid," she said. "But in this case, it's totally unacceptable. I don't feel like watching and I fully support a boycott. I won't be watching."

The SC, which has promised a carbon neutral World Cup, says the stadium cooling systems require about a fifth of the energy typical to cool spaces of the same size, such as airport terminals or closed baseball fields. The World Cup will be held in late autumn, when Qatar’s summer heat has subsided and temperatures usually fall to mid-20 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit).

Qatar 2022: Pub owners in Germany to boycott telecast of World Cup games

Australia's national soccer team spoke out against World Cup host Qatar's record on human rights and same-sex relationships in a video released on Thursday, adding to criticism of the country in the weeks ahead of the tournament.

Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, has come under intense international pressure for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws. The video, featuring several players delivering a message line by line, cited harm to Qatar's more than 1.6 million migrant workers and the status of same-sex relationships, which are illegal in the conservative gulf state.

"We have learned that the decision to host the World Cup in Qatar has resulted in the suffering and the harm of countless of our fellow workers," midfielder Jackson Irvine said. "As players we fully support the rights of LGBTI+ people, but in Qatar people are not free to love the person that they choose," said fellow midfielder Denis Genreau.

Qatari ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Tuesday said while some criticism was constructive, it also included fabrications and double standards. The Socceroos acknowledged reforms to date but called for more including a migrant resource centre, remedy for those denied rights and decriminalisation of all same-sex relationships.

A separate statement from Football Australia, the peak soccer body, on Thursday acknowledged reforms but said the games had been associated "with suffering for some migrant workers and their families." Disquiet over the country's human rights record has led to calls for teams and officials to boycott the games. The Dutch government confirmed last week it would send a delegation despite a parliamentary vote urging it not to.

Players expressed support for FIFPRO, a trade union for professional footballers, as well as worker groups the Building and Woodworkers International and the International Trade Union Confederation. Australia will play against France, Denmark and Tunisia after the World Cup kicks off on Nov. 20.

Australian players call out Qatar's human rights record before FIFA World Cup

The United Nations human rights office has claimed that 23 children died during the crackdown against anti-hijab protests in Iran that was sparked by Mahasa Amini's death, reports Reuters news agency.

It said that the kids were killed by live ammunition, metal pellets at close range, and fatal beatings.

The UN office further said that Iran's police force has detained an unspecified number of children during school raids, while some have been sent for psychological treatment.

Though the human rights office didn't provide further details about the deceased, NGO Amnesty International claimed that the victims included 20 boys aged between 11 and 17, and three girls, of which two of them were 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old.

The month-long demonstration began after the death of 22-year-old Amini who was detained by the Iran's Morality Police for wearing headscarves inappropriately in violation of the Islamic dress code.

Since then, the protests have transformed into anti-regime agitation, calling for an end to the dictatorial regime.

On Monday, EU countries sanctioned Iran's information minister, several senior officers of Morality Police and other officials for the brutal crackdown on protesters.

In response, the Tehran regime vowed to take timely action, and blamed the West, especially US, of stoking tensions in the region.

Though no official figures are available, a toll published by the Iran Human Rights group has said that at least 122 people have been killed in the crackdown on the Amini protests, and at least 93 more died in separate clashes in Zahedan, Sistan-Baluchestan province.

Nobel Peace Prize 2022 has been awarded to one individual and two organisations. The Norwegian Nobel Committee named human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, Russia's Memorial group and Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties as the joint winners.

"They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human right abuses and the abuse of power. Together they demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy", the head of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, told reporters.

The committee called for the release of the Belarusian human rights advocate who is currently held in Belarus for tax evasion since 2021.

"Our message is an urge to the authorities in Belarus to release Mr. Bialiatski and we do hope this will happen and that he can come to Oslo and receive the honour bestowed upon him," the head of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, told reporters.

The committee insisted that the prize was not directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"This prize is not addressing President Putin ... except that his government ... is representing an authoritarian government that is suppressing human rights activists," Reiss-Andersen said.

Asserting that its founder Alfred Nobel was "turning in his grave," Belarus criticised the Nobel Committee on Friday for awarding its famous peace prize to activist Ales Bialiatski, who is currently incarcerated.

"In recent years, a number of fundamental decisions of the Nobel Committee are so politicised that, excuse me, Alfred Nobel is tormented and turning in his grave," foreign ministry spokesman Anatoly Glaz said on Twitter.

The prize comes with a gold medal, a diploma and a prize sum of 10 million Swedish kronor (about $900,000). The award will be presented at a formal ceremony in Oslo on December 10.

The Nobel season winds up Monday with the Nobel Economics Prize.

Following the election triumph of far-right Italian politician Giorgia Meloni, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on Monday said that the European Union would closely follow the respect of certain human rights and would be "attentive" to the respect of women's rights such as abortion.

During her election campaign, Meloni reiterated her opposition to adoptions and surrogacy for LGBT couples, however, the far-right politician consistently refuted allegations that she may roll back legislation on abortion or gay rights.

Meloni has declared that she will uphold the nation's abortion law, which permits terminations, while also giving doctors the option to refuse to perform them.

However, as per AFP, her declaration that she wants to "give to women who think abortion is their only choice the right to make a different choice" has alarmed proponents of women's rights.

French PM vows to 'be attentive' to ensuring abortion, human rights are respected in Italy after Meloni's win

A woman from Saudi recently jailed for 45 years was charged for using Twitter "to challenge the religion and justice" of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, AFP reported quoting the court document.

Nourah al-Qahtani, a mother of five, was sentenced to jail light last week for Twitter posts found to be malicious by the Saudi authorities. This harsh punishment drew swift condemnation from the West, which highlighted the poor human rights records of the kingdom.

The court document further states that Qahtani, who is in her late 40s, incited "the activities of those who seek to disturb public order and destabilise the security of society and the stability of the state" by publishing false and malicious tweets".

It further states that Qahtani also used Twitter to "insult state symbols and officials" and demand "the release of detainees pending security cases".

The court document was provided to AFP by Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), a Washington-based rights group founded by slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

It says that Qahtani's account showcases many posts criticising the government, with its banner picture containing a hashtag calling for an anti-government protest coinciding with last year's hajj pilgrimage.

After the assassination of al-Qaeda chief Ayman-al Zawahiri in Kabul, the Biden administration chose not to release any of the $7 billion of foreign assets held by Afghanistan’s central bank on US soil and has halted negotiations with the Taliban on the funds. But at the same time, in order to strengthen international assistance, USAID, the global humanitarian assistance arm of the US, has announced three aid packages worth $150 million for Afghanistan.

This week marks the one-year somber anniversary of the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. Following the militant group’s announcement of banning girls from attending schools after sixth grade, this investment is the most recent one to upgrade different sectors in the country. The USAID will give $30 million to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, for the betterment of Afghan women. An amount of $40 million will go to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the remaining $80 million to Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Biden administration officials cited that Zawahiri’s living safely in Afghanistan, until the drone strike killed him, played a significant role in the decision to freeze funds. This decision also dashes expectations for an economic resurgence in the country.

In conversation with WSJ, US Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West said that the Taliban’s hiding the al-Qaeda chief underlines deep concerns the country has regarding the flow of funds to the terrorist group. When further asked about whether the group can obtain aid for people, the representative responded that the authorities don’t see the group as being responsible enough for managing the assets.

In the past, US President Joe Biden stated that he intends to give the families of 9/11 victims half of the $7 billion fund and the remaining to a trust fund for humanitarian relief to the Afghan people. However, considering that it would ultimately be the Taliban delivering the aid, this option seems out of the relevance line. However, critics have criticised Biden’s decision stating it was an unfair collective punishment for the Afghans.

However, it seems as if the US is now trying to normalise relations with the Taliban. The latest engagements made by the US in form of aid are being looked at as an engagement and reach out to the Taliban to bring the relation back on track.

But now one question arises can the Biden administration after the Zawahiri’s killing go further? The US would want further information on this. On the other hand, the Taliban apparently be seeking recognition and a bailout from its financial crisis.

The Taliban on Monday (August 1) said that under the pretence of upholding human rights, the international community was trying to violate the dignity of Afghan women. Speaking to a crowd in the northern province of Faryab, Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, claimed that the international world has primarily abused human rights in the country, reported Tolo news. He said, "The world wants to violate the dignity of our sisters and make them indecent and exposed. What type of right is this? The international community wants a guy and girl to be sitting in one chair—neither our nation, nor our beliefs and religion supports this," ANI reported.

Hanafi claimed, "All employees that are in the provinces, districts and ministries should make their appearances according to Islamic values."

Women’s rights in Afghanistan have been declining since the Taliban took power, as per a report published by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). International community tried violating dignity of Afghan women, say Taliban

In the present times, there are numerous issues that lead to tensions between various states leading to the disruption of world peace. Whether it is the issue of wars, migration, or climate change, nations keep on challenging themselves to protect their interest. To seek a solution to inter-state disputes they often submit to various international dispute settlement mechanism and one of them is the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

It has been seen that over time the ICJ has played an important role in the protection of human rights at the international level. Various international human rights treaties and agreements usually have their own procedure of dispute settlement. The ICJ basically deals with those human rights issues which are related to nonspecific human rights agreements or traditional international law. Few treaties that are related to human rights contain various provisions for approaching the ICJ for a dispute settlement, therefore the ICJ in the past has exercised its jurisdiction and power and has made significant contributions to the laws related to the protection of human rights at the international level. It has come up with various new jurisprudence in the fields of genocide, migration, discrimination on the basis of race, etc.

It is to be noted that the ICJ is not a specialized human rights body in terms of its jurisdiction, procedures, and also professionals which sometimes shortens the ambit of the court’s role in the human rights field. The ICJ can only hear cases involving states that have accepted the ICJ's jurisdiction, either by agreeing to submit the specific dispute to the ICJ or by ratifying a treaty that specifies that disputes under the treaty will be submitted to the ICJ which is the main and significant difference between the other human rights institutions and the ICJ, as the human rights bodies provide access to individuals seeking justice. The ICJ has unlimited jurisdiction on Inter-states disputes but has limited jurisdiction in terms of human rights. There are few decisions made by ICJ which significantly contribute to the protection of human rights but they can be termed as small contributions while seeing the large picture of human rights.

The ICJ started recognizing human rights in the 1950s and early 1960s which is related to the fact that international human rights law came into existence in 1945 when the UN Charter included human rights promotion among its main purposes in Article 1(3), and in Articles 55 and 56. In the 2000s, ICJ’s decisions were seen as its approach toward the inclusion and recognition of international human rights and humanitarian aspects in disputes presented before it. The ICJ is one of the main organs of the UN and also the main judicial organ which provides the ICJ various special powers, the limitations of ICJ in the fields of international human rights are the result of its statute which also depends majorly on the willingness of states to participate in the proceedings and to ultimately comply with its decisions. The jurisdiction of the ICJ is spread to both contentious and advisory which means that apart from the inter-state disputes, the ICJ can upon request provide advice to UN organs and its agencies on issues like human rights.

As part of its important role in the framework of international dispute settlement, the ICJ has provided significant contributions to preventing conflict situations through its peaceful dispute settlement system. ICJ’s involvement with human rights has increased over the times with the adoption of various human rights treaties within the UN which has ultimately provided a chance for ICJ’s involvement to interpret the treaties as a specialized legal organ of the UN, these international treaties provide general protection or protection for some specific human rights. A large number of treaties provide opportunities for individuals to file individual communications or individual complaints about the infringement of human rights. This exemplary change in the stand of an individual before a judicial body is because of the realization of human rights in the international legal system. Article 34 of the ICJ’s statute says that “only states may be parties in cases before the Court” should only be seen as a provision defining the competence of the Court but not limited to exercise or contributing to the issues related to human rights.

A groundbreaking report endorsed by British human rights lawyer Helena Kennedy has said that Turkiye should face International Court of Justice for being complicit in genocide of Yazidi people when Syria and Iraq failed in their duty to protect. The report has been made by prominent human rights lawyers. The report is aimed at highlighting responsibilities of states towards prevention of genocide on their territories even when they are carried out by third parties like Islamic State.

The group of lawyers is called 'Yazidi Justice Committee'. The lawyers said that states had responsibility to prevent genocide taking place on their territory under international law. Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, who is the chair of the committee has described the genocide as “madness heaped on evil”.

“Mechanisms in place could have saved the Yazidis from what is now part of their past, and part of their past partial destruction,” he said as quoted by The Guardian.

The report has resulted after a three year investigation. It examined the conduct of 13 countries. The report has concluded that three of these countries have failed to perform their duty to prevent genocide.

The report goes even further in case of Turkiye and states that the country was complicit. It alleges that Turkey failed to police its borders to prevent inflow of Islamic State fighters. Officials in Turkey have said that these allegations are baseless.

You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here. New report shows the dramatic fall of human rights in Hong Kong

Hong Kong ratings on human rights have dropped further. This has brought it on par with Saudi Arabia in some indicators. Its fall has also made it come closer to China in the list.

Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) has reported these rankings. The report has also noted deepening divide between ratings China has received.

As per the report, China has high indicators in quality of life but some of the world's lowest in civil and political rights.

The HRMI is in its fifth year. It conducts national surveys and gives rankings to the countries.

The crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong (2019) has resulted in sweeping changes in political landscape of the city. China has tightened its grip on Hong Kong and passed laws like National Security law that are often used to curtail freedoms. Since the crackdown and tightening of the Chinese grip, many of Hong Kong's pro-democracy politicians have left the country.

Pro-democracy media outlets have also been shut down under government pressure. Jimmy Lai, a media tycoon who ran the now-defunct Apple Daily, is in jail.

“What we see here is Hong Kong’s scores are converging downwards towards [last placed] China’s score,” said Thalia Kehoe Rowden, a spokesperson for the HRMI. She was quoted by The Guardian.

Hong Kong drops further in human rights ratings

Young victims of the climate crisis will file a lawsuit against 12 European governments at the European Court of Human Rights over an international pact that allows fossil fuel investors to sue countries for taking action to tackle climate change on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.

The case targets Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Britain, all of which are Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) signatories.

The plaintiffs represent countries hit by recent climate change-related disasters including Germany and Belgium, which last year suffered devastating floods after heavy rain that scientists said was made more likely by climate change.

Their suit will ask the European Court of Human Rights to protect their rights by ordering governments to remove impediments to fighting climate change created by the ECT.

As reported by Reuters, a 17-year-old student Julia, one of the plaintiffs, says, "Governments are still putting profits of the fossil fuel industry over human rights. But climate change is escalating and demanding more and more lives every day."

Originally drawn up to support energy sector investments in former members of the Soviet Union, the ECT allows investors to sue countries over policies that damage their investments, and has been branded an obstacle to climate action by campaigners.

Criticism of the treaty has intensified amid lawsuits from companies seeking compensation for fossil fuel assets. RWE last year used it to seek compensation from the Dutch government over its plan to phase out coal-fuelled power by 2030, which would affect the German utility's Eemshaven power plant.

Volkswagen asks for more time in Brazil human rights probe

A top court in the United States has delivered a landmark judgement in a case that argued whether human rights are also applicable for animals. The court in New York ruled that Happy, an elephant who is the resident of Bronx Zoo since the 1970s, cannot be considered a human being legally and as a result, the rights will not be the same for Happy as it is for a person. It was a blow to an animal rights group known as the Nonhuman Rights Project who filed the case in hope of releasing the elephant from the Bronx Zoo. The argument from the group was that Happy is an autonomous, cognitively complex elephant who should enjoy rights same as a human, according to The Guardian.

The official ruling, written by Chief Judge Janet DiFiore, said that “while no one disputes that elephants are intelligent beings deserving of proper care and compassion”, the rules and rights that apply to human beings cannot be extended to the elephant in these circumstances.

Happy was born in Asia and the elephant was brought to New York as an old-year-old along with Grumpy, a fellow elephant. The zoo authorities expressed their relief at the ruling as they feared that a ruling in favour of Happy can result in similar cases about other animals in the facility.

This is the second time that the case of Happy went to court after a lower court had already denied human rights to the elephant. The court earlier observed that the ruling in favour of Happy “would have an enormous destabilizing impact on modern society”.

“Indeed, followed to its logical conclusion, such a determination would call into question the very premises underlying pet ownership, the use of service animals, and the enlistment of animals in other forms of work,” read the decision according to The Guardian report.

Prince Charles calls UK's Rwanda migrants policy 'appalling': Reports

Rights groups on Friday urged leaders attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) this month to pressure Rwanda to release dissidents and improve its grim record on freedom of expression.

The East African country, ruled by President Paul Kagame since the end of the 1994 genocide which left some 800,000 mainly ethnic Tutsis dead, has often come under fire for rights abuses.

"We express our grave concerns about the human rights situation in Rwanda as it prepares to host the meeting in June 2022," 23 organisations, including Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International, said in a joint statement.

The campaigners asked the Commonwealth to insist that Rwandan authorities "immediately drop the charges against and release all of those currently detained solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression".

Kigali should also "publicly commit and guarantee that civil society and media including those from Rwanda will be allowed to work freely and raise human rights issues without fear of reprisals during and after their participation in CHOGM", they added.

The campaigners also urged the CHOGM attendees to press Rwanda to allow an international investigation into high-profile cases involving rights violations, notably the death of gospel singer Kizito Mihogo.

His music was banned by Kagame's government and he was found dead in his cell in February 2020, just days after he was caught trying to flee the country.

United Nations launches probe into Russia's alleged human rights violations in Ukraine

In the biggest overhaul of its asylum system in decades, the United Kingdom has made the Nationality and Borders Act into law.

As per the Government of UK website this law will “deter illegal entry into the UK, breaking the business model of people-smuggling networks, and speed up the removal of those with no right to be in the UK.”

Despite widespread outrage and charges that it violates international law, Britain praised what it called a "world-leading" overhaul of its asylum system.

Home Secretary Priti Patel, who herself comes from a family of asylum seekers and whose parents escaped Idi Amin's Uganda, has dubbed the controversial act's passage a "landmark" that brought about changes suited for the 21st century.

The bill, which was passed late Wednesday by parliament, includes maximum life penalties for human traffickers who are accused of assisting unauthorised migration.

However, it also imposes harsher prison sentences for anyone who enters the country illegally, raising concerns that it could be used against asylum seekers.

The act gives agencies more authority to expedite the expulsion of failed asylum seekers and "dangerous foreign criminals," as well as brings an end to "meritless" judicial battles to prevent deportation, as described by Patel.

Quite notably one of its provisions, dubs, people who have claimed asylum in another “safe” country “inadmissible’ to the UK asylum system.

Human rights organisations and charities that help refugees and migrants have lambasted the idea, and some have threatened to sue the government.

The new legislation, according to UN Refugee Chief Filippo Grandi, may violate both the letter and the spirit of global refugee accords to which Britain is a signatory.

According to Oxfam's head of government relations, Sam Nadel, it is "heinous" and "a devastating blow for families fleeing conflict and persecution."

Human rights groups concerned as UK brings about biggest overhaul to its asylum law

U.S. lectured India on human rights, and Russia on genocide. Back in America, a 26-year-old black man was shot in the head by a white police officer, he died. Incidents like these happen in U.S. every other day. When will the U.S. talk about them?

Gravitas: Why is U.S. not talking about human rights violations at home?
