China was fiercely criticised by the United States, United Kingdom and several other countries at a UN meeting on Tuesday (Jan 23) over its chequered human rights record in its restive regions of Xinjiang, Tibet as well as its Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong.&nbsp;

The UK called on China to "cease the persecution and arbitrary detention of Uyghurs and Tibetans and allow genuine freedom of religion or belief and cultural expression without fear of surveillance, torture, forced labour or sexual violence", while the US said China should "release all arbitrarily detained individuals” and cease the operation of "forcible assimilation policies including boarding schools in Tibet and Xinjiang".

The mass murderer sued the Norwegian state for breaching his human rights for the second time on Monday, claiming that his solitary confinement since 2012 amounts to inhumane treatment under the European Convention on Human Rights. Here's everything you need to know about him: Who is Anders Behring Breivik? Åsne Seierstad, an investigative reporter, in his book One of Us: The Story of Anders Breivik and the Massacre in Norway, has given a detailed account of Anders Behring Breivik, who dressed as a police officer and murdered 69 boys and girls and eight adults in a summer camp for young socialists on the island of Utøya after a bomb attack in Oslo in 2011. First arrested at the age of 16 for spraying graffiti on the walls, Breivik grew up in an expensive area of Oslo. At 20, he chaired the local Oslo branch of the anti-immigration Progress Party. In 2005, Breivik joined a gun club. According to the Norwegian tax authority figures, he declared no income in 2009. He financed the terror attack with $142000 using nine credit cards. The court appointed two teams of forensic psychiatrists who examined Breivik before his trial in 2012. While the first team diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia, the second team concluded that he had narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder. In 2016, Breivik sued the Norwegian Correctional Service for violating his human rights. However, the justice system dismissed it despite a lower court ruling. Later, in 2017, he filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights, but it was dismissed in 2018. Although Breivik was eligible to be paroled after serving 10 years of his 21-year sentence in January 2022, the court refused his request for parole. Currently, Breivik is held in a two-story complex with a kitchen, a dining room, a TV room with an Xbox, and several armchairs. He also has a fitness room with weights, a treadmill and a rowing machine. Øystein Storrvik, Breivik's lawyer, says he can't have meaningful relationships with anyone from the outside world. Thermo Fisher Scientific, a company that makes scientific instruments, chemicals and even consumables has said that it was stopping sale of forensic tech and equipment in Tibet which can potentially be used to identify individuals, reported Reuters, citing company spokesperson.

In past, the company had made dedicated human identification (HID) available in Tibet. The spokesperson reportedly said that the technology was used for functions such as tracking criminals.

The spokesperson said that the sales of the technology and equipments were "consistent with routine forensic investigation in an area of this size" but "based on a number of factors we made the decision in mid-2023 to cease sales of HID products in the region".

China,&nbsp;which controls Tibet, has been drawing international flak over human rights issues, particularly of the Uyghur Muslims and also for stifling religious and cultural freedoms in predominantly Buddhist Tibet. However, China&nbsp;vigorously denies all such allegations.

Thermo Fisher Scientific reportedly denied to specify reason for its latest decision to stop sale of forensic tech and equipment in Tibet.

In 2019, the company took a similar decision to stop sale of genetic sequencing equipment in China's Xinjiang. There are allegations that China is building DNA database for Uyghurs, a charge authorities deny.

Shareholders of Thermo Fisher Scientific have welcomed the company's latest decision saying that some of its tech had a risk of being used by law enforcers to commit human rights violations.

Reuters reported that Azzad Asset Management, one of the shareholders, had written a letter to Thermo Fisher last month saying it had withdrawn a shareholder proposal regarding human rights after the US&nbsp;firm said it would cease HID product sales in Tibet as of Dec 31, 2023.

Thermo Fisher Scientific declined to comment on why it&nbsp;waited for many days after its initial announcement about the ban and its actual implementation, said Reuters.

The U.N. human rights chief urged countries on Monday to work together to defeat threats such as war and pollution at an event to mark 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that risks being overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Ministers, diplomats and activists attended the Geneva event where Volker Turk invoked the spirit in which the newly-formed United Nations adopted the declaration in December 1948, in response to what the document calls "barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind".

"I view today's event as a call to hope, and a call to action," said Turk, an Austrian, who said the declaration had inspired successes such as the end of racial segregation in the United States and apartheid in South Africa.

"At a time of so little solidarity, and so much divisive and short-sighted vision, I view it as a call to overcome polarisation."

But he also lamented failures in the struggle, such as war, referring to "millions of people suffering unbearably in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, notably in Gaza, and Israel" as well as famine, discrimination, repression and pollution.

Never before in the period after World War Two has the world seen so many conflicts, with 55 now active, including a war between rival military factions in Sudan and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations said.

In communications about the two-day event, Turk's office has avoided the word "celebrate" in referring to the anniversary, preferring instead the term "mark".

Lynn Hastings, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said human rights were under assault more than two months after Hamas' deadly cross-border attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, followed by a retaliatory Israeli bombing campaign.

"In 2023, I should not have to issue such a statement," she said. "It is as if we have learned nothing in the past 75 years."

Iran is facing condemnation from human rights groups as it executed a 17-year-old named Hamidreza Azari for murder in the town of Sabzevar. The incident reignited concerns about the country's practice of hanging individuals for crimes committed by minors.

The execution took place on Friday (Nov 24) in a prison located in Sabzevar, Razavi Khorasan province, according to statements from Norway-based Hengaw and Iran Human Rights (IHR) groups.

Azari, the only child in his family, had been working as a scrap worker.&nbsp;

Hengaw and IHR, citing official documents, revealed that Azari was 16 years old at the time of the crime and 17 when executed. Both groups said that Iran's action violated the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which defines a child as anyone under the age of 18.

IHR reported that since 2010 at least 68 minors have been executed in Iran.

IHR Director Mahmood-Amiry Moghaddam pointed out the contradiction in Iran's laws, noting that while 18 is the minimum age for obtaining a driver's license, the country's penal code considers 15 as the age for criminal executions.

The group accused Iranian media of deliberately misrepresenting the age of the executed individual to avoid accountability.

<h2>Wave of executions&nbsp;</h2>

The execution of Azari is part of a broader trend of increased capital punishment in Iran. Another execution, unrelated to Azari's case, occurred on Thursday (Nov 23), involving a man in his early 20s connected to protests that erupted in September 2022.

These protests were triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, while in custody for an alleged dress code violation.

India has called on Canada to prevent misuse of freedom of expression, disallow activities&nbsp;of groups promoting extremism, prevent attacks on places of worship of religious&nbsp;minorities, and work to address hate crime in the country.&nbsp;

This comes during a meeting in Geneva in November where Canada’s human rights record were examined for the fourth time by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group.&nbsp;

The UPR Working Group, which carries out a regular assessment of the human rights records of all UN Member&nbsp;States, consists of 47 member states of the UN Human Rights Council. However, when it comes to reviewing human rights records for any country, each one of the 193 UN Member States can participate.&nbsp;

With diplomatic relations between India and Canada at an all-time low, Indian diplomat Mohammed Hussain, in his remarks at the council, urged Canada to “further strengthen the domestic framework to prevent misuse of freedom of expression for inciting violence and disallow activities of groups which are promoting extremism."&nbsp;

New Delhi at the UN also asked Canada to “effectively prevent attacks on places of worships of religious and racial minorities” as well as&nbsp;“strengthen legislative and other measures to address hate crimes and hate speech”.

Moreover, India took the opportunity to also direct Canada to stand up for indigenous rights and stop any discrimination against the community.&nbsp;“Put an end to structural discrimination against children belonging to indigenous groups. And address disparities in access to services by all children,” the Indian diplomat added.

India has called on Canada to prevent misuse of freedom of expression, disallow activities of groups promoting extremism, prevent attacks on places of worship of religious minorities, and work to address hate crime in the country. This comes during a meeting in Geneva in November where Canada’s human rights record were examined for the fourth time by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group. The UPR Working Group, which carries out a regular assessment of the human rights records of all UN Member States, consists of 47 member states of the UN Human Rights Council. However, when it comes to reviewing human rights records for any country, each one of the 193 UN Member States can participate. New Delhi at the UN also asked Canada to “effectively prevent attacks on places of worships of religious and racial minorities” as well as “strengthen legislative and other measures to address hate crimes and hate speech”. Moreover, India took the opportunity to also direct Canada to stand up for indigenous rights and stop any discrimination against the community. “Put an end to structural discrimination against children belonging to indigenous groups. Russia was unable to regain its seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as the UN General Assembly (UNGA) rejected its bid. Russia was ousted from UNHRC after it invaded Ukraine last year.

Russia was competing with Bulgaria and Albania for two open spots for Eastern Europe regional group. It nonetheless received 83 votes in its favour from UNGA's 193 members.

The election for the body's 2024-2026 term had been viewed as a test of what Moscow contended was quiet support despite fierce Western-led criticism over its brutal assault on its neighbor.

The vote was held just days after a Russian missile attack targeted a Ukrainian village of Groza. More than 50 people died in the attack when global attention had shifted to Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

UN General Assembly rejects Russian bid to rejoin human rights body

A prominent Pakistani human rights activist and&nbsp;a former lawmaker were arrested on Sunday (August 20) after they attended a protest against enforced disappearances in the country.&nbsp;

Lawyer Imaan Mazari-Hazir and politician Ali Wazir appeared at the first protest in months to be staged by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), which fights for the rights of ethnic Pashtuns.

The pair was produced in a court in Pakistani capital Islamabad on Sunday and sent to custody. A case was registered against them under anti-terrorism act. Islamabad police said they face&nbsp;"serious charges".

PTM was formed to protest against what it says are military excesses during anti-terror operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is northwestern region of Pakistan where most Pashtuns live. Pakistani military denies accusations of excesses.

On Friday, up to 3000 people were in attendance at a protest in Islamabad. Mazari-Hazir and Wazir both gave speeches in which they condemned harassment of Pashtuns. They called for missing people to be returned.

"You are being stopped as if you are the terrorists, while the (Pakistani) Taliban have taken over your homes again," Mazari-Hazir told the crowds in a video posted on social media.

A PTM spokesman told AFP that dozens more members have also been detained since the protest held in the capital Islamabad.

"It's unacceptable and points to a larger, more worrying pattern of state-sanctioned violence against people exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly," the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said in a statement.

<h2>No warrant</h2>

Shireen Mazari, who was Pakistan's human rights minister in former prime minister Imran Khan's government, alleged that her daughter was taken away from her home in Islamabad by plainclothes women. Mazari said that no warrant was presented.

"My daughter was in her night clothes and said 'let me change' but they just dragged her away," she posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Ali Wazir is a PTM founding member. He has long been an outspoken critic of the military and their anti-terror operations in the former tribal areas that border Afghanistan.

Pakistan: Prominent rights activist and politician arrested after rally

City officials in Toronto were forced to cancel a weekend of Eritrean cultural celebrations after outbreaks of violence and demonstrations by opponents of the Eritrean government.

Clashes between attendees and protesters left nine people hospitalised and brought attention to human rights abuses in Eritrea and tensions within diaspora communities, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

<h2>Global skirmishes and human rights concerns</h2>

The violence in Toronto mirrors similar confrontations in Sweden, where over 50 people were injured, and in Seattle, where Eritrean protesters opposed cultural events they believe support one of the world's most repressive regimes.

<h2>Pleading for peace and protection</h2>

In the days leading up to the Festival Eritrea Toronto, the organisers sought protection from Toronto police to ensure a "festive and peaceful" event. However, tensions escalated as protesters began tearing down tents and confronting attendees.

Attendee Danait Mehreteab reported that her father was targeted by protesters and severely injured. He was struck with a metal rod, resulting in a skull injury requiring 12 staples and a fractured spine.

Following the escalating violence and safety concerns, city officials made the difficult decision to revoke permits for the Festival Eritrea Toronto, prioritising public safety.

Community groups expressed "deep concern and distress" over the clashes and highlighted the event organisers' alleged ties to the Eritrean government, triggering traumatic experiences for those who fled oppression in their homeland.

Toronto mayor Olivia Chow condemned the violence as "unacceptable," emphasising the city's commitment to peaceful cultural celebrations.

The festival, which had previously taken place without incident, came under scrutiny as critics accused it of being a propaganda tool to raise funds for Eritrea's pariah government.

Lu Siwei, a Chinese rights lawyer has been arrested in Laos while attempting to board a train for Thailand. Lu, whose lawyer licence was stripped for taking on sensitive cases may now be deported to China where he could face prison time, activists and family members fear. “I’m extremely worried for his safety. If he’s sent back to China, he’d definitely be imprisoned,” Zhang Chunxiao, Lu's wife was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. Lu was stripped of his legal licence in 2021 for representing a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist who attempted to flee to Taiwan. Later in the same year, he was barred from leaving the mainland and an exit ban was placed on him when he was to visit the US for a visiting fellowship. Chinese companies from the mainland, investing in minerals used in the renewable energy industry, have been accused of human rights and environmental violations, a report released by an international NGO has revealed. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre in its report said that Chinese companies have been accused of more than 100 human rights and environmental abuses around the world since 2021. Chinese firms were accused of abuse across 18 countries, of which, a quarter of the abuse instances took place in Indonesia alone (27). Meanwhile, 16 cases were reported in Peru, 12 in DRC, 11 in Myanmar and seven in Zimbabwe. The abuses include Indigenous rights violations, attacks against grassroots leaders, water pollution, ecosystem destruction and unsafe working conditions. The United Nations (UN) said on Friday (June 30) that the humanitarian and human rights situation in Myanmar has plunged to 'alarming levels'. The agency blasted Myanmar's ruling military junta for actively preventing life-saving aid from getting through.&nbsp;

Myanmar has been in turmoil since a military coup in 2021. The military ousted the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. The military regime then embarked on a crackdown on opponents. The fighting between the two sides has ravaged many parts of the country.

The military "continues to prioritise its aims over all other considerations", UN human rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a media briefing.

"Myanmar's overall humanitarian and human rights situation has deteriorated to alarming levels, exacerbated by the military's strategy to prevent life-saving humanitarian aid from reaching those who desperately need it," added Shamdasani.

"The military has operated as if those providing aid are helping those opposed to their rule, rather than respecting their need for protection and facilitating their access and assistance to the civilian population in a time of crisis".

Shamdasani said restricting aid needed after Cyclone Mocha in May has brought "further suffering and misery".

Intentional obstruction or denial of humanitarian assistance may amount to gross violations of international human rights law, and serious violations of international humanitarian law.

A report on the Myanmar situation has been produced by UN human rights chief Volker Turk.&nbsp;

Turk is due to present the report to the Human Rights Council on Wednesday.

<h2>The situation in Myanmar</h2>

The military junta has killed and injured thousands of civilians as it destroyed goods and infrastructure necessary for survival. This included food, shelter and medical centres.

In the aftermath of the military coup in Myanmar, an estimated 1.5 million people have been internally displaced. Approximately 60,000 civilian structures have reportedly been burned or destroyed.

More than 17.6 million people are in need of some type of humanitarian assistance. This comes to one-third of the overall population.

"Between February 2021 and April 2023, credible sources verified that at least 3,452 persons have died at the hands of the military and its affiliates," the report says.

Furthermore, "21,807 individuals were arrested, and 5,839 convicted without any respect for judicial guarantees. Additionally, 154 have been sentenced to death and four known to be executed".

Human rights situation in Myanmar is 'alarming', says UN

The Biden administration expressed strong condemnation on Monday towards an online harassment campaign targeting Sabrina Siddiqui, a Wall Street Journal reporter, who questioned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his government's human rights record during a White House press conference last week.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby described the online vitriol as "completely unacceptable" and contrary to the principles of democracy showcased during the state visit. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre echoed the sentiment, emphasising their commitment to press freedom and denouncing any attempts to intimidate or harass journalists, reported NBC.

"It’s completely unacceptable and it's antithetical to the very principles of democracy that ... were on display last week during the state visit," he said.

During the press conference held at the White House on Thursday, Siddiqui directed a question to President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Modi, highlighting concerns raised by human rights groups about religious minority discrimination and stifling of dissent in India.

She asked what measures the Indian government was willing to take to improve the rights of Muslims and other minorities and uphold freedom of speech.

Modi, who rarely engages with reporters, expressed surprise at the question and defended India's democratic values, asserting that there is no discrimination based on caste, creed, age, or geography in the country. He emphasised that democracy is deeply ingrained in both India and the United States.

Biden administration slams online harassment of journalist questioning Indian PM's human rights record

Dozens of US&nbsp;President Joe Biden's fellow Democrats urged him on Tuesday to raise human rights issues with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Washington this week, according to a letter sent to Biden.

Modi left for Washington on Tuesday for a visit projected as a milestone in ties between the two countries.

The US&nbsp;lawmakers said they were concerned about religious intolerance, press freedoms, internet access and the targeting of civil society groups.

"We do not endorse any particular Indian leader or political party — that is the decision of the people of India — but we do stand in support of the important principles that should be a core part of American foreign policy," said the letter, led by Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representative Pramila Jayapal.

A total of 75 Democratic senators and members of the House of Representatives signed the letter, sent to the White House on Tuesday and first reported by Reuters.

"And we ask that, during your meeting with Prime Minister Modi, you discuss the full range of issues important to a successful, strong, and long-term relationship between our two great countries," the letter said.

Modi has been to the United States five times since becoming prime minister in 2014, but the trip will be his first with the full diplomatic status of a state visit, despite concerns over what is seen as a deteriorating human rights situation under his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Washington hopes for closer ties with the world's largest democracy, which it sees as a counterweight to China, but rights advocates worry that geopolitics will overshadow human rights issues. Several US&nbsp;rights groups plan protests during Modi's visit.

The State Department's annual report on human rights practices released in March listed "significant human rights issues" and abuses in India.

"A series of independent, credible reports reflect troubling signs in India toward the shrinking of political space, the rise of religious intolerance, the targeting of civil society organizations and journalists, and growing restrictions on press freedoms and internet access," the lawmakers said in the letter.

They said they joined Biden in welcoming Modi to the United States, and want a "close and warm relationship" between the people of the two countries, saying that friendship should be based on shared values and "friends can and should discuss their differences in an honest and forthright way."

"That is why we respectfully request that — in addition to the many areas of shared interests between India and the US&nbsp;— you also raise directly with Prime Minister Modi areas of concern," the letter said.

Dozens of US lawmakers urge Biden to raise rights issues with Modi

For the past quarter century, every spring the United States and China have accused each other of pervasive human rights violations in a tit-for-tat routine that brings in sharp focus an ideological rift so vast it is difficult to see that it can ever&nbsp;bridged.

The clash routinely begins with the publication of an extraordinarily detailed report on the state of human rights in the world compiled by the U.S. State Department. The report runs to more than two million words. It covers 198 countries and territories.

That’s every country in the world, except one – the United States. Without fail, extensive parts of the reports have been sharply critical of China and the Communist Party’s failure to adhere to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in running the world’s most populous country.

The persistent criticism so infuriated Beijing that China began issuing a counter-report, in 1998, on Human Rights violations in the United States.

The latest US&nbsp;report came out on March 20, more than 28,000 words of it about China, complete with charges about genocide and crimes against humanity against the predominantly Muslim Uyghur community and other ethnic and religious groups in the north-western Xinjiang province.

A week later, China responded with 11,130 words of condemnation which described the year 2022 as a landmark setback for U.S. human rights and portrayed the country as plagued by “chronic diseases” including racial discrimination, police brutality, politics controlled by money, extreme wealth disparity, rampant drug abuse, declining average life expectancy and relentless gun violence.

The day the Russian report was published, America’s Gun Violence Archive, a widely respected research database, recorded the 146th mass shooting since the beginning of the year. Since then, there have been mass shootings at a bank, a school, and the 16th birthday party of a girl in Alabama.

Details of the Chinese critique of America were drawn from U.S. think tanks, media, academic research institutes, and government statistics.

Reading the reports side by side, it is obvious that the Chinese leadership views America’s (and the West’s) definition of human rights as unsuitable for their country and a threat to the rule of the Communist Party.

Shortly after Xi Jinping assumed his first term as president in 2013, the rejection of the idea that all people around the world are entitled to certain rights – universal values — became official policy in a Communist Party “Communique on the Current State of the Ideological Sphere.”

Dubbed Document 9 by Sinologists, it said there were “essential differences between the West’s value system and the value system we advocate.” That system, according to Document 9, is based on obedience to the party and requires opposition to “false ideological trends” such as constitutional government with the separation of powers and an independent judiciary.

For Chinese officials, the most important human right is economic well-being. In pursuit of that goal, the leadership has excelled. Over the past three decades, the system has lifted 800 million people out of poverty, according to World Bank figures.

The Chinese report on the U.S. notes, in contrast, high national poverty rates and “disproportionally high” child poverty rates. Quoting statistics from Columbia University, the report says child poverty had risen from 12.1 per cent in December 2021 to 16.6 per cent in May 2022, which translates to an additional 3.3 million children in poverty.

Coinciding with the American report on brutal repression, genocide and a long list of trampling individual freedoms, the Chinese state news agency Xinhua accused the West of ignoring that “one of the greatest human rights successes a country could hope for is the elimination of poverty.”

That message is falling on receptive ears in large parts of the world where China has steadily expanded its influence through credits and infrastructure projects. One of the most memorable remarks from last month’s U.S.-sponsored Summit of Democracy came from an African leader, Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia..

“You can’t eat democracy. Human rights may sustain the spirit but not the body,” he said in a speech to the participants of the mostly virtual event.

Neither the US&nbsp;report, the only global assessment of human rights by a government (as opposed to private advocacy groups), nor the Chinese counter-report broke new ground and instead re-emphasised mutual recriminations.

But the American report added to a very long list of activities that could land a Chinese citizen in jail an unfamiliar offence: “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” One offender, named Xu Guang, was arrested for holding up a sign in front of a police station demanding the return of his confiscated smartphone.

A Beijing-based lawyer, Li Yuhan, has been held in a detention centre since 2017 also for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”, according to the report.

Its preface noted that State Department officials and diplomats around the world spent “thousands of hours” compiling accurate accounts of the state of human rights.

Given the effort that goes into the reports, one might assume that its findings play a major role in shaping US&nbsp;foreign policy. But that is not the case. Where US&nbsp;national interests are at stake, human rights violations are not necessarily obstacles to normal relations.

US&nbsp;President Joe Biden provided a memorable demonstration that national interests trump human rights last summer when he visited Saudi Arabia, a country he had described as a “pariah” when he was running for president because of Saudi abuses including the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Kashoggi.

Candidate Biden pledged that Saudi Arabia’s de-facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, would “pay the price” for the Kashoggi murder, U.S. intelligence says he ordered. But President Biden, concerned about sky-high gasoline prices in the U.S., visited Saudi Arabia in hopes that the Saudis would increase oil production and thus help lower gasoline prices.

Biden’s about-face provided yet more evidence that the universal values Washington officially espouses are not universally applied. Cozying up to dictators when that is in the American interest has a long history and predates the first U.S. global human rights report which was published in 1976.

In 1938, when aides complained to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt about the repressive and corrupt rule of Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza, a close US&nbsp;ally, history books give his response as “he may be a son of a bitch, but he’s OUR son of a bitch.”

China vs US contest: Who is the bigger human rights violator?

Seoul said in a report on Thursday (March 30) that North Korea executes people for drugs, sharing South Korean media, and religious activities as it stifles its citizens' human rights and freedom.&nbsp;

Seoul claims North Korea executes people for sharing South Korean videos: Report

Cases opened Wednesday before the&nbsp;European&nbsp;Court&nbsp;of Human Rights against France and Switzerland over alleged failings to protect the environment, marking the first time governments are in the&nbsp;court's dock for alleged climate change inaction.

The case against Switzerland is based on a complaint by an association of elderly people -- who call themselves the "Club of Climate Seniors" -- concerned with the consequences of global warming on their living conditions and health, the ECHR said.

They accuse the Swiss authorities of various climate change failings which they say amount to a violation of the government's obligation to protect life and citizens' homes and families.

"We've been fighting for years," said Bruna Molinari, 81, who lives in the southern Tessin canton "where the pollution is the worst".

"I hope the&nbsp;court&nbsp;will find in our favour so that Switzerland does better than it has done so far," he added ahead of the hearing.

The average age is 73 in the Swiss club, which is backed by Greenpeace Switzerland.

Around 50 of its 2,000 members were expected in Strasbourg for the hearing.

'Heat kills'&nbsp;

Alain Chablais, representing the Swiss government, told the&nbsp;court&nbsp;that it was "baseless to claim or suggest that Switzerland is doing nothing".

The ECHR "has no business becoming the place where national climate protection policy is decided," he added.

But the plaintiffs' lawyer Jessica Simor said her clients were "already suffering the effects of climate change" that Switzerland was not doing enough to stop.

Temperatures were rising "twice as quickly" in the Alpine nation as the global average, she added.

"Heat kills... increasing the risks of kidney problems, asthma attacks, cardiovascular difficulties... and causes particularly acute symptoms in elderly people, more especially elderly women".

The case against France was brought by Damien Careme, a former mayor of Grande-Synthe, a suburb of Dunkirk in northern France, who also argues that the central government has failed to meet its obligation to protect life by taking insufficient steps to prevent climate change.&nbsp;

When he was mayor, Careme brought his case to the French judiciary on behalf of his town but also on his own behalf, saying climate change was raising the risk of his home being flooded.

France's highest&nbsp;administrative court&nbsp;ruled in favour of the town against the central government in 2021, but threw out the individual case brought by Careme, which he then took to the ECHR.

'Extremely high stakes'

"The stakes are extremely high," said Corinne Lepage, a former French ecology minister and one of Careme's lawyers in the case.

"If the&nbsp;European&nbsp;court&nbsp;recognises that climate failings violate the rights of individuals to life and a normal family life, then that becomes precedent in all of the council's member states and potentially in the whole world," she told AFP.

The&nbsp;European&nbsp;Court&nbsp;of Human Rights -- whose members are the 46 states belonging to the Council of Europe -- acknowledged in a statement ahead of the hearings that the&nbsp;European&nbsp;Convention on Human Rights, on which it must base its judgements, does not actually include a right to a healthy environment.

But its decision to take Wednesday's cases was based on the fact that the exercise of the convention's existing rights could be undermined by harm to the environment or exposure to environmental risks.

A third pending case, without a date for a hearing so far, was brought by young Portuguese applicants claiming that climate inaction by dozens of states had contributed to heatwaves in Portugal which they said was affecting their rights.

Although the cases are a first for the ECHR, governments have in the past been taken to&nbsp;court&nbsp;in their national jurisdictions.

In 2019, the Dutch Supreme&nbsp;Court&nbsp;ordered the government to cut greenhouse gas emissions following a complaint by an environmental organisation.

Two years later, a&nbsp;court&nbsp;in Paris found the French government guilty of climate inaction and ordered it to pay for resulting damages after four NGOs filed a case.

Wednesday's hearings are only the start of proceedings that are likely to take several months before the&nbsp;court&nbsp;hands down its verdicts.

Cases opened Wednesday before the European Court of Human Rights against France and Switzerland over alleged failings to protect the environment, marking the first time governments are in the court's dock for alleged climate change inaction.

Cases opened Wednesday before the European Court of Human Rights against France and Switzerland over alleged failings to protect the environment, marking the first time governments are in the court's dock for alleged climate change inaction. "I hope the court will find in our favour so that Switzerland does better than it has done so far," he added ahead of the hearing. The average age is 73 in the Swiss club, which is backed by Greenpeace Switzerland. Around 50 of its 2,000 members were expected in Strasbourg for the hearing. 'Heat kills' Alain Chablais, representing the Swiss government, told the court that it was "baseless to claim or suggest that Switzerland is doing nothing". At least one United Nations peacekeeper from South Africa was killed, while another was injured after their helicopter in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo was attacked, on Sunday (February 5), said the agency spokesperson in the region. On the same day, Mali’s ruling junta announced that it was expelling the head of the human rights division of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

A UN peacekeeper was killed in DRC after their helicopter was attacked

At least one UN peacekeeper was killed and another injured after their aircraft came under fire at around 3:00 pm (local time) during a flight to Goma, said Amadou Ba, a spokesman for the UN mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) to AFP. He added, the source of fire that struck the helicopter was not known and neither its precise location could be determined.&nbsp;

Subsequently, in a statement, the South African military also confirmed the incident which involved an Oryx helicopter. “A crew member was fatally shot, another suffered injuries but managed to continue flying the chopper and landed safely at Goma Airport,” said the South African National Defense Force (SANDF). Meanwhile, neither South Africa nor the UN mission has indicated who might be responsible for the attack, they also did not reveal which weapon was used to fire at the helicopter.&nbsp;

In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, asked the Congolese authorities to launch an investigation into the “heinous attack” and bring those responsible to justice. Similarly, MONUSCO chief Bintou Keita strongly condemned the incident and described it as a “cowardly attack” on an aircraft with the UN emblem and said that “attacks against peacekeepers can constitute a war crime”.

Mali’s junta expels UN mission’s human rights chief

In a statement, the Malian interim government, on Sunday (February 5), declared the head of the UN peacekeeping mission’s human rights division, Guillaume Ngefa-Atondoko Andali, as persona non grata and said he has 48 hours to leave the country. This comes after he was allegedly connected to the biased choice of civil society witnesses for UN Security Council briefings on Mali. The most recent briefing was held on January 27.&nbsp;

Notably, the officials in Mali have repeatedly come under fire for their alleged human rights violations perpetrated by Malian armed forces reportedly in partnership with the Russian private military contractor Wagner Group. This also comes days after the UN experts called for an investigation into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity by these forces in Mali in January.

Notably, the current Malian government took power two years following a military coup and has since pushed back against some of the allegations by the UN, asserting their authorities are committed to respecting human rights in accordance with international and national law.&nbsp;
