Indian shuttlers will be looking to continue their fine form in the upcoming BWF World Championships after their brilliant show at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022. Indian badminton players clinched a total of six medals, including three gold medals at the Games in Birmingham and will be hopeful of extending their stellar run at the World Championships in Tokyo.

However, India's medal hopes were dealt with a huge blow ahead of the World Championships after ace shuttler PV Sindhu pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. Sindhu, who won his maiden CWG gold at the Games last month, had to pull out of the tournament due to a stress fracture on her left foot.

In her absence, India's medal hopes will rely on veteran Saina Nehwal as far as women's singles are concerned. In the men's singles, the likes of Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth will start as favourites. The men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty will also be major contenders for gold at the World Championships.

A total of 26 Indian players will be in action at the BWF World Championships 2022 which gets underway on August 22 (Monday) in Tokyo, Japan. While the doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag have a favourable draw, the trio of Srikanth, Sen and HS Prannoy have all been drawn in the same half reducing India's chances of a medal in men's singles.

Indian shuttlers Mithun Manjunath and Ashmita Chaliha notched up stunning wins over their illustrious rivals to hog the limelight on the second day of the Singapore Open Super 500 tournament here on Wednesday.

While Mithun recorded a stunning 21-17 15-21 21-18 win over compatriot and World championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth in men's singles, Ashmita shocked Thailand's world number 12 Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16 21-11 in women's singles.

The world No. 77 Mithun, a product of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, will next take on Ireland's Nhat Nguyen, while Ashmita faces China's Han Yue. For two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu and man-in-form HS Prannoy, it was also a good day in office as the two also progressed to the second round with facile wins.

Sindhu looked in complete control as she prevailed 21-15 21-11 over Belgium world No. 36 Lianne Tan to set up a clash with Vietnam's Thuy Linh Nguyen.

Prannoy, who had reached the semifinals at Malaysia Masters last week, saw off Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin 21-13 21-16 and will next meet third seeded Chou Tien Chen, whom he had beaten at Malaysia Open recently.

London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal also avenged her India Open loss to compatriot Malvika Bansod with a 21-18 21-14 win to make it to the second round.

Manjunath, who had reached the finals of Orleans Masters Super 100 in April this year, came out all guns blazing as he dominated the opening game after taking an early 6-2 lead. He kept Srikanth at bay to comfortably seal the opening game.

Srikanth, however, turned the tables after the change of ends as he enjoyed an 11-8 cushion at the break and kept extending his lead to come back into the contest. The decider turned into a roller-coaster ride with the two slugging it out but it was Manjunath, who showed better control as he ensured a slender one-point advantage at the breather.

Srikanth managed to take a 16-15 lead at one stage but Manjunath didn't let the opportunity slip and reeled off the last three points from 18-18 to notch up one of the biggest win of his nascent international career.

Manjunath, 24, has been in fine fettle as he reached his maiden Super-100 final at Orleans Masters in France last April. He had claimed four All-India ranking titles, including the Senior Ranking Badminton tournament in December last year. 
Earlier in the year, he had contracted COVID-19 and had to withdraw from India Open Super 500 in January.

He, however, made it to the Indian team for the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia after a semifinal finish at Syed Modi International and quarterfinals at Odisha Super 100. Ashmita, world number 66, also dished out a superlative performance as he fought back from 5-10 down with an eight-point burst to zoom ahead and earn the bragging rights.

&nbsp;Indian shuttler HS Prannoy cruised into the semi-finals of the ongoing Malaysia Masters 2022 on Friday after beating Kanta Tsuneyama. Playing on Court 1, Prannoy`s defence was solid and the jump smashes &amp; net-play were delightful. But the highlight was the composure he showed at the end. Prannoy defeated Kanta Tsuneyama 25-23, 22-20, in a match that lasted for one hour.

He becomes the only Indian to reach the semifinals in the tournament. The 29-year-old shuttler completely dominated the proceedings in both rounds and secured his semi-finals berth. This is Srikanth's first loss against the 36-year-old Frenchman in their six meetings.

Continuing his impressive run, India's H S Prannoy stormed into the men's singles final at the Swiss Open Super 300 badminton tournament with a hard-fought win over Indonesia's world number 5 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting here on Saturday.

The 29-year-old eked out a 21-19 19-21 21-18 win over Ginting in a thrilling semifinal that lasted an hour and 11 minutes.

It was Prannoy's first final in five years, having won the US Open in 2017.

He will take on either compatriot Kidambi Srikanth or Indonesia's Jonatan Christie in the summit clash on Sunday.

A former top 10 player, Prannoy came into the match with a 1-1 head-to-head count against Ginting, who is currently ranked 21 places higher than him at world no. 5.

The Indian looked in good touch as he grabbed the initiative early and held a 6-3 lead which was quickly erased by Ginting to move to a 12-19 advantage at one stage.

A five-point burst gave Prannoy a slender two-point lead and he maintained it till 18-16 before a net error and a service fault helped his rival to level par.

Ginting, however, went to net twice himself to hand over Prannoy a game point and the Indian sealed it with a precise return on his rival's front court.

After a tight battle in the second game, it was Ginting who grabbed a three-point lead at the interval following a couple of errors from the Indian at the net and front court.

Prannoy tried to send his rival to the corners with his diagonal shots but Ginting responded with a body return. The duo tried to go close to the lines and force errors on one another.

In the decider, Prannoy took a 8-5 lead and went into the break with a three-point advantage after Ginting's backhand return went to net.

The Indian increased his lead to 14-8 but he stumbled to a series of errors to allow Ginting make it 15-19.

Prannoy unleashed a smash to grab four match points. He squandered two before entering the finals with another precise return.

The shuttler also said he is currently learning few new shots as it is important for a player to have a variety in his game before starting a new season. "Yes, we were working on some shots which I was not able to pull off during the last few months and at this level its very important to always have some surprise shot ready with you, especially when you are starting a new season and when you have a little bit of time, it is very important for you to try few new shots and I think I was trying to do that for sometime now. It will take time but today I was able to get a couple of shots and I can it was a good sign for me," said Prannoy.

"It is not important that whether it was successful or not. The important thing is that you tried some shots on the court because practice sessions are much easier where you can try but during tournaments, you don`t feel like doing anything else because of your sched. Lakshya Sen, who won a bronze medal at his first World Championships, has pledged to try for gold next time, even as the young shuttler focuses on the All England Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

On Saturday, the 20-year-old from Almora finished with a bronze medal after losing an incredibly close semifinal 17-21 21-14 21-17 against seasoned compatriot Kidambi Srikanth.

"It has been a long tournament and it is difficult to take such a loss when you are so close. I, at least, got a bronze, but I am not happy. I'm not very satisfied with the performance in the semifinals,"&nbsp;Sen&nbsp;told&nbsp;PTI.

"I played a lot of good matches, faced some tough opponents, even in the semifinal it was a close match, it could have gone in anybody's favour. The medal is something to look forward to... Next time I will go for the gold."

Sen joined his guru, the legendary Prakash Padukone (bronze in 1983),&nbsp;Kidambi Srikanth (2021) and B Sai Praneeth (bronze in 2019) in the list of male shuttlers from India to have won a medal at the World Championships.

"It is a good thing that in my first world championship, I made it to the semifinals and joined Prakash sir but I am looking forward to winning many more medals and events like him. Especially, I want to win the All England Championships, like him."

Sen had some tough matchups this week leading up to the semifinals, with two of the three matches lasting three games or more, including a gruelling quarterfinal against China's Zhao Jun Peng.

"It is hard to recover when you play three setters. The semifinal was also a physical battle. He had an easy quarterfinal compared to me, but it is a game where you have to give your best."

Sen played with a strapped shoulder and a bandaged knee, and he stated he's looking forward to getting all of his niggles worked out during the break.

"I had hurt my knee at Hylo Open when I had dived, there was pain but I managed it well. The shoulder was strapped as a safety measure as we have to play a lot of smashes during the rallies and, in slow conditions, it can be difficult. So I will fix all the niggles during the break."

Sen stated that he is eager to return to training in order to prepare for next year's big-ticket tournaments, which include the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

"I'm looking to get back to training after the assured break. The season starts with the India Open and then Syed Modi for me."

"All the big tournaments such as CWG, Asiad, All England are lined up next year and I am looking forward to do well in these events."

Sen broke into the top 20 this year and is now aiming to move into the coveted top ten.

"After this tournament, I am hoping to reach world No. 16 or 17, that would be good thing for me, so next target will be to break into top 10 next year," he signed off.

Nehwal and Prannoy were taken to the hospital to adhere to the safety protocols. Kashyap Parupalli was also asked to self-quarantine. &nbsp;

The four players took an antibody blood test to further confirmation. While Nehwal, Prannoy and Hansen tested positive on the PCR test, their antibody IgG was positive. &nbsp;

"They didn`t want to take a risk and some of them said their families and parents are worried about the current situation," BAI general secretary Ajay Singhania said.

"It`s completely up to the players to decide if they want to travel."

Several badminton events that were to serve as qualifiers for the Olympics have been cancelled or postponed. The March 11-15 tournament in Birmingham will award points towards securing Tokyo spots.

The top 16 singles players in the qualification race, limited to two athletes from any country, are guaranteed spots in the Tokyo Games, which begin on July 24.

Leading Indian women`s singles players PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal - both previous Olympic medallists - are making the trip to England, as are their male counterparts Kidambi Srikanth and B. Sai Praneeth.

Meanwhile, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has barred its athletes from attending any private or public functions.
