The time-honoured example of this is the <a href="http://onviolence.com/?e=303" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Rambo series</a> wherein Sylvester Stallone&rsquo;s invincible super soldier battles America&rsquo;s communist enemies.</p>

<p>The Rambo films were shot against the reheating of the Cold War in the light of the &ldquo;Star Wars&rdquo; Strategic Defense Initiative and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. They were also a reflection of growing American confidence during the Reagan presidency after the pessimism of the post-Vietnam era. But Hollywood is not the only industry guilty of this cinematic jingoism today.</p>

<p>China has found its own Rambo in Leng Feng, the hero of China&rsquo;s latest box office smash, Wolf Warriors 2 (??2). The film has become <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-china-box-office-20170823-story.html">the most successful</a> in the Chinese box office, making more than five billion Yuan (&pound;585m) since its release in late July, in contrast to a <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/aug/11/hollywood-summer-blockbuster-films-dark-tower-valerian-get-out">rather tepid year</a> for its American counterpart.</p>

<p>Just as Rambo took on the might of the Soviet empire in the 1980s, Leng &ndash; played by Chinese action superstar, Wu Jing (??), who also directed the film &ndash; battles China&rsquo;s foreign enemies. While strongly Chinese in national sentiment, it follows the path set by its Hollywood predecessors in terms of action and storyline. Also like many Hollywood movies, the film is indicative of the changes in Chinese foreign policy and attitudes today &ndash; just as Rambo had been for the Reaganite policies of the Cold War.</p>

<p><strong>Echoes of Libya</strong></p>

<p>The plot is standard action fare with Leng, a maverick Chinese soldier, going to a fictional African state in the middle of a civil war to rescue Chinese workers and their African comrades &ndash; while also tracking down those who were responsible for his fianc&eacute;e&rsquo;s death. While this appears to be in keeping with the gung-ho US blockbusters of the 1980s, it is called to mind recent events in Africa.</p>

<p>Near the beginning of the film, Chinese nationals are whisked aboard a People&rsquo;s Liberation Army Navy ship in a scene reminiscent of the <a href="http://thediplomat.com/2011/03/chinas-nimble-libya-pullout/">evacuation of Chinese citizens from Libya</a> during the country&rsquo;s 2011 civil war. Such a move has been cited as a watershed for China&rsquo;s approach to Africa due to the sheer scale of the operation as well as being a break from the more cautious approach of the past.</p>

<p>This change in stance is further augmented when Leng argues with the admiral in charge of the evacuation, who claims that the lack of Chinese intervention is due to the United Nations rather than China&rsquo;s reluctance.</p>

They are not directly named &ndash; but it&rsquo;s obvious that she is talking about the European empires that once ran much of the African continent. This is presented as a counterpoint to the idea that anti-colonialism was a key factor in the development of <a href="https://www.academia.edu/8080014/China_in_Africa_-_Third_World_Solidarity_in_the_21st_Century?auto=download">significant Sino-African ties in the 20th century</a>.</p>

<p>China&#39;s increasing military power has been accompanied by a greater willingness to use it &ndash; and the country&rsquo;s military presence in Africa has been augmented by the establishment of a naval base in Djibouti which is expected to enhance China&rsquo;s ability to project power in Africa. This comes with the involvement of other Asian powers, most notably Japan and India, on the continent, leading to fears of a new &ldquo;<a href="https://www.igd.org.za/11775-the-21st-century-scramble-for-africa-implications-and-the-way-forward">scramble for Africa</a>&rdquo;.</p>

<p>Much has been written about violence that erupted over a &quot;Unite the Right&quot; march in Charlottesville when white nationalists and counter-protesters met oddly with each other. The march saw taunting and shoving from both parties that led to a huge brawl.</p>

<p>According to some initial reports, a car ploughed&nbsp;into another vehicle near a group of counter-protesters. The brawl became quite ugly with a 32-year-old&nbsp;girl named Heather D. Heyer losing her life. There were nineteen others injured while at least 34 people were wounded in the clashes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Standing tall against any such violent acts of spreading hatred and fear, celebrities&nbsp;took to social media to share their support for Charlottesville:&nbsp;</p>

White supremacists marched across the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, leaving at least three dead and many injured

Much has been written about violence that erupted over a "Unite the Right" march in Charlottesville when white nationalists and counter-protesters met oddly with each other. The march saw taunting and shoving from both parties that led to a huge brawl. According to some initial reports, a car ploughed into another vehicle near a group of counter-protesters. The brawl became quite ugly with a 32-year-old girl named Heather D. Heyer losing her life. There were nineteen others injured while at least 34 people were wounded in the clashes. Chris Patt, Anna Faris separation hit fans hard

<p>It is no coincidence that Apollo, the sun god, is also the god of poetry and, more importantly, the god of Truth in the Greek mythology. Artists, therefore, are often expected to bear the twin responsibilities of entertaining as well as shining light on truths that would otherwise languish in the darkness of ignorance and intrigue. Sir David Hare, the celebrated British playwright and film writer, shoulders them both with nonchalant grace and confidence. While he can create a play like The Permanent Way that tells the sordid tale of the privatisation of the railways under John Major, his screenplays bring out the best in Hollywood heavyweights like Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, fetching them the Oscars.</p>

<p>It is incongruous, then, to hear that such an illustrious and eclectic oeuvre was an outcome of two accidents: of birth and betrayal.</p>

<p>My conversation with Hare begins ab ovo.</p>

<p><strong>Born into Boredom</strong></p>

<p>&ldquo;I was born in a very boring town. A small suburban seaside town called Bexhill in Sussex, England. It had the oldest national age all the towns in the country. If you were young and lively in the 1950&rsquo;s, there was absolutely nothing to do there. It was just so boring! One had to rely on one&rsquo;s own imagination. And that is a classic writer&rsquo;s background. To come from a place where you really have to make your own entertainment,&rdquo; he offers a glimpse of the portrait of an artist as a young man.</p>

<p>He continues, &ldquo;As a child, I fantasised a lot. Not only do I depend as a writer upon my imagination, it&rsquo;s given me another gift: I also never get bored. I&rsquo;m now almost 70 and still deeply curious about (the) world. Because I was born in a place that was so dull, everywhere I go seems interesting and exciting.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Even though the young Hare found ways to keep boredom at bay, he had to wait for an accident, in imitation of the great tradition of fantasy literature and cinema, to become a writer.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Accidental Writer</strong></p>

<p>Hare confesses that despite fantasy being a powerful part of his childhood, he never dreamed of becoming a writer. &ldquo;It never occurred to me. I studied literature in the university but it never seemed that I was going to write literature,&rdquo; he says. It was while running a theatre company that it, literally, happened. He shares, &ldquo;I was the director of the company and a playwright let us down on a Wednesday and we had to have something to start rehearsing the following Monday. So I wrote a play.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Hare seizes this moment to talk about the importance of trying. &ldquo;I always say to everybody, &lsquo;you should always try&rsquo;. You may have a gift inside you for whatever it is- swimming, diving, writing, running and maybe technology! Try things because you may discover the gift you didn&rsquo;t know you had. When I had discovered the gift of writing I was truly amazed. I had absolutely no sense of it before I did it. When I found it, it was the most joyful thing in my life.&rdquo;</p>

<p>I begin to wonder if it was the same principle of &ldquo;trying&rdquo; that brought him to films.</p>

<p>He replies, &ldquo;I always loved films. You must remember that I was born at a time when cinema was the most important medium in Europe. These great filmmakers- Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Antonioni, Louis Malle, Jean Luc Godard- they were not just artists. They were at the very front of the European thought. If you wanted to understand what people were thinking about in Europe, you had to watch their films.&rdquo; The position that cinema then held as being the most intellectually vital form, unfortunately, it has rarely held since. It just happened to be the period of very great men and women making wonderful films. Cinema has a much lower role in society now. But of course, I love it! As a child, I always wanted to write films but it took me very long to know how to.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Not just saddened with the lowered role of cinema in present times, Hare is also dismayed by the fading of the &ldquo;state-of-the-nation&rdquo; tradition of theatre in Britain.</p>

<p><strong>Theatre and Trump</strong></p>

<p>Hare begins by talking about what inspires him. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not a writer who is entirely influenced by other writers. I don&rsquo;t have any literary influence. My influences have always been the world, what I see going on, and my reaction to it. I look at subjects that nobody else considers worth writing about.&rdquo;</p>

<p>He continues, &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve written plays about aid to the third world, privatisation of railways, the diplomatic process leading up the invasion of Iraq, the Chinese revolution and even the priests of the Church of England. These are all subjects that are apparently very off putting. Subjects about which people say, &lsquo;Oh, I don&rsquo;t want to see a play about that, it sounds boring!&rsquo; I believed I could make such subjects interesting. I&rsquo;ve always claimed a certain prescience and ability to see something that will become interesting over the years. That has been my principal characteristic as a writer.&rdquo;</p>

<p>A traditionalist in some ways and an iconoclast in others, Hare does not write on demand. &ldquo;At the moment when everyone is asking me to write a play about Trump, I say &lsquo;no!&rsquo; I have no interest in writing a play about Trump, it&rsquo;s too obvious.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>Nothing called an Oscar-winning Role</strong></p>

<p>Whether talking about themes and subjects or discussing actors, Hare does not mince his words. Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet both won Oscars for the roles he created but he stakes no claim on those golden statuettes.</p>

<p>Hare says, &ldquo;Because I am a director in the theatre, I&rsquo;m very conscious of what the actors&rsquo; experience is going to be like. As a playwright and film writer, I try to carve roles that are worth playing. In the theatre, we write plays where people just have three or four lines. My heart is with that actor who&rsquo;s got to sit there the whole evening from 7:30 to 10:30 only to come and say three lines. It&rsquo;s more satisfying for the audience and the actor if the part is worth playing.&rdquo;</p>

<p>He continues, &ldquo;I may have specialised in writing the kind of role that actors want to play. But here is the crucial thing about this. When I wrote The Reader, for instance, the actresses who read that role said that whoever played this part would win the Oscar. I said, absolutely not! It will only be won by a great actress. I didn&rsquo;t win the Oscar for Kate Winslet, Kate Winslet won for herself. Nicole Kidman won her own Oscar. When actresses come to me and say &lsquo;Can you write me an Oscar-winning role?&rsquo; the answer is NO. I can&rsquo;t write an Oscar-winning role because you will only win an Oscar if you are a great actress: in that class of Nicole and Kate.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Is this why he prefers working with the tried and tested, battle-hardened actors?</p>

<p><strong>Familiar Creativity</strong></p>

<p>Hare does not hide his admiration for some of his favourites. &ldquo;There are some actors that I&rsquo;ve worked with over and over again.&rdquo; The list includes Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Julianne More, Nicole Kidman, Carrie Mulligan, Rachel Weisz amongst others. He declares, &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve now worked with Bill Nighy (William Francis) ten times! I find this thing of coming back to actors raises your game because you start already knowing each other and all the preliminaries are out of the way. You set to work with more speed. It&rsquo;s wonderful because you start at a level where you already know each other so much.&rdquo; On the excitement of discovering a new talent he says, &ldquo;Of course, I will be enriched working with new people. But it will also be very time consuming when you are both trying to learn how to work together.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Hare is nothing if not brutally honest. No wonder, then, his autobiography The Blue Touch Paper: A Memoir elicited some strong reactions. Many of the readers were befuddled by his self-criticism, as scathing as his response to others&rsquo; flaws.</p>

<p>Hare says, &ldquo;Some people who read the book recognised the emotions. It was a big struggle for me to establish my work. It was not liked by the critics in the beginning and I felt very embattled. My twenties were very hard times for me. I became a not-very-pleasant person because I had to fight so hard for my work. I conformed to the stereotype of the ruthless artist who&rsquo;ll do anything in order to see his ideas, for whatever they are worth, realised.&rdquo;</p>

<p>He continues without a wince or even a blink, &ldquo;When I described in the book the self-hatred this ruthlessness brings about, some people said &lsquo;Oh I can&rsquo;t believe you suffered from that degree of self-hatred.&rsquo; My response to that is, if you don&rsquo;t suffer from self-hatred good for you! You are a very lucky person. But those of us, who do, recognise each other. One of the reasons the book is so liked by some people may be that I&rsquo;m, hopefully, completely honest about darker emotions in myself as much as anyone else.</p>

<p>Taking the truth talk further, I ask him about his degree of familiarity with the non-European film and theatre scene.</p>

<p>He replies with, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s very heartening&rdquo; and continues &ldquo;But it is also difficult to access because, by and large, it is English speaking films that are shown in London. The number of art cinemas, which show films from abroad, is getting smaller and smaller. So all I can do is scroll through the television streaming channels and see what I can find of foreign films.&rdquo; Then he confesses, &ldquo;I can&rsquo;t pretend to know as much about the world cinema as about the English language films.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Can the challenges faced by non-English films and plays be countered by collaborations? Hare and Ralph Fiennes are part of one such collaborative venture in the Russian language. He informs, &ldquo;Half the film is in Russian and we are doing it precisely because that&rsquo;s what we want to do. We want to make a film that is set in another culture and use people from that culture to make it. Whether we will succeed in financing it or not, I don&rsquo;t know yet.&rdquo;</p>

<p>He continues, &ldquo;I can imagine a similar collaboration in India. I&rsquo;ve been coming to India since 1981. I wrote a play in 1982 which was set in Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai. I also adapted Katherine Boo&rsquo;s book Behind the Beautiful Forevers into a play which was shown National Theatre. The filmed version of this play was shown in cinemas all over the world and I&rsquo;m very, very proud of it. We had an all Indian company of 24-25 actors at the National Theatre and then it was seen all over the world: that&rsquo;s one of the most satisfying things I&rsquo;ve done.&rdquo;</p>

<p>At the end of the conversation, Hare gives a characteristically passionate response to a cliched interview question: advice to the younger lot.</p>

<p>Before I can finish my sentence, Hare says, &ldquo;Get your play on! If a theatre won&rsquo;t do your play, do it yourself. Just put it on. Doesn&rsquo;t matter where you put it on. Celebrated British playwright and film writer, Sir David Hare speaks on the role of creativity and the place of Truth in playwriting

It is no coincidence that Apollo, the sun god, is also the god of poetry and, more importantly, the god of Truth in the Greek mythology. Artists, therefore, are often expected to bear the twin responsibilities of entertaining as well as shining light on truths that would otherwise languish in the darkness of ignorance and intrigue. Sir David Hare, the celebrated British playwright and film writer, shoulders them both with nonchalant grace and confidence. While he can create a play like The Permanent Way that tells the sordid tale of the privatisation of the railways under John Major, his screenplays bring out the best in Hollywood heavyweights like Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, fetching them the Oscars. It is incongruous, then, to hear that such an illustrious and eclectic oeuvre was an outcome of two accidents: of birth and betrayal. My conversation with Hare begins ab ovo. Born into Boredom “I was born in a very boring town. A small suburban seaside town called Bexhill in Sussex, England. It had the oldest national age all the towns in the country. If you were young and lively in the 1950’s, there was absolutely nothing to do there. It was just so boring! One had to rely on one’s own imagination. And that is a classic writer’s background. To come from a place where you really have to make your own entertainment,” he offers a glimpse of the portrait of an artist as a young man. As a child, I fantasised a lot. Not only do I depend as a writer upon my imagination, it’s given me another gift: I also never get bored. × He continues, “As a child, I fantasised a lot. Not only do I depend as a writer upon my imagination, it’s given me another gift: I also never get bored. I’m now almost 70 and still deeply curious about (the) world. Because I was born in a place that was so dull, everywhere I go seems interesting and exciting.” Even though the young Hare found ways to keep boredom at bay, he had to wait for an accident, in imitation of the great tradition of fantasy literature and cinema, to become a writer. Accidental Writer Hare confesses that despite fantasy being a powerful part of his childhood, he never dreamed of becoming a writer. “It never occurred to me. I studied literature in the university but it never seemed that I was going to write literature,” he says. It was while running a theatre company that it, literally, happened. He shares, “I was the director of the company and a playwright let us down on a Wednesday and we had to have something to start rehearsing the following Monday. So I wrote a play.” Hare seizes this moment to talk about the importance of trying. “I always say to everybody, ‘you should always try’. You may have a gift inside you for whatever it is- swimming, diving, writing, running and maybe technology! Try things because you may discover the gift you didn’t know you had. When I had discovered the gift of writing I was truly amazed. I had absolutely no sense of it before I did it. When I found it, it was the most joyful thing in my life.” I begin to wonder if it was the same principle of “trying” that brought him to films. If you wanted to understand what people were thinking about in Europe, you had to watch their films × He replies, “I always loved films. You must remember that I was born at a time when cinema was the most important medium in Europe. These great filmmakers- Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Antonioni, Louis Malle, Jean Luc Godard- they were not just artists. They were at the very front of the European thought. If you wanted to understand what people were thinking about in Europe, you had to watch their films.” The position that cinema then held as being the most intellectually vital form, unfortunately, it has rarely held since. It just happened to be the period of very great men and women making wonderful films. Cinema has a much lower role in society now. But of course, I love it! As a child, I always wanted to write films but it took me very long to know how to.” Not just saddened with the lowered role of cinema in present times, Hare is also dismayed by the fading of the “state-of-the-nation” tradition of theatre in Britain. Theatre and Trump Hare begins by talking about what inspires him. “I’m not a writer who is entirely influenced by other writers. I don’t have any literary influence. My influences have always been the world, what I see going on, and my reaction to it. I look at subjects that nobody else considers worth writing about.” He continues, “I’ve written plays about aid to the third world, privatisation of railways, the diplomatic process leading up the invasion of Iraq, the Chinese revolution and even the priests of the Church of England. These are all subjects that are apparently very off putting. Subjects about which people say, ‘Oh, I don’t want to see a play about that, it sounds boring!’ I believed I could make such subjects interesting. I’ve always claimed a certain prescience and ability to see something that will become interesting over the years. That has been my principal characteristic as a writer.” A traditionalist in some ways and an iconoclast in others, Hare does not write on demand. “At the moment when everyone is asking me to write a play about Trump, I say ‘no!’ I have no interest in writing a play about Trump, it’s too obvious.” I have no interest in writing a play about Trump, it’s too obvious. × Nothing called an Oscar-winning Role Whether talking about themes and subjects or discussing actors, Hare does not mince his words. Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet both won Oscars for the roles he created but he stakes no claim on those golden statuettes. Hare says, “Because I am a director in the theatre, I’m very conscious of what the actors’ experience is going to be like. As a playwright and film writer, I try to carve roles that are worth playing. In the theatre, we write plays where people just have three or four lines. My heart is with that actor who’s got to sit there the whole evening from 7:30 to 10:30 only to come and say three lines. It’s more satisfying for the audience and the actor if the part is worth playing.” He continues, “I may have specialised in writing the kind of role that actors want to play. But here is the crucial thing about this. When I wrote The Reader, for instance, the actresses who read that role said that whoever played this part would win the Oscar. I said, absolutely not! It will only be won by a great actress. I didn’t win the Oscar for Kate Winslet, Kate Winslet won for herself. Nicole Kidman won her own Oscar. When actresses come to me and say ‘Can you write me an Oscar-winning role?’ the answer is NO. I can’t write an Oscar-winning role because you will only win an Oscar if you are a great actress: in that class of Nicole and Kate.” Is this why he prefers working with the tried and tested, battle-hardened actors? Familiar Creativity Hare does not hide his admiration for some of his favourites. “There are some actors that I’ve worked with over and over again.” The list includes Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Julianne More, Nicole Kidman, Carrie Mulligan, Rachel Weisz amongst others. He declares, “I’ve now worked with Bill Nighy (William Francis) ten times! I find this thing of coming back to actors raises your game because you start already knowing each other and all the preliminaries are out of the way. You set to work with more speed. Cross-culture romance under lens in 'The Big Sick'

<p>More than 70 years after she first burst upon the scene in her red bustier and blue shorts, Wonder Woman is finally getting her turn in the movie spotlight, and expectations could hardly be higher.</p>

<p>&quot;Wonder Woman,&quot; with the title role played by former Israeli army soldier Gal Gadot and out in movie theaters worldwide this week, is the first female superhero film since 2005&rsquo;s box office dud &ldquo;Elektra,&rdquo; and the first to be directed by a woman.</p>

<p>&quot;I feel it was a lot of expectation resting on the shoulders of this film and resting literally on the shoulders of Wonder Woman,&rdquo; said director Patty Jenkins, whose budget was more than $150 million.</p>

<p>&quot;We tried to make a movie for everybody a la the grand classic films from &#39;Superman 1&#39; to &#39;Indiana Jones,&#39; so I hope we actually get a little of everyone,&quot; she added, referring to hopes that both men and women would see the movie.</p>

<p>Since her inception in 1941 in DC comic books with her patriotic red bustier embossed with a golden eagle and blue shorts with white stars, Wonder Woman has become a symbol of female empowerment in a comic book world dominated by male superheroes like Batman, Superman and Iron Man, and by male fans.</p>

<p>Actress Lynda Carter became the embodiment of Wonder Woman when she played her in the highly popular 1970s television series.</p>

<p>But times have changed. Last year Wonder Woman lost her position as an honourary ambassador for the United Nations after a grass roots petition slammed the character as &quot;a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad ... the epitome of a &#39;pin-up&#39; girl&quot;.</p>

<p>In the film, Wonder Woman&#39;s red and gold bodice doubles as a suit of armour in fight scenes in which she darts and dodges bullets, knives and thunder bolts.</p>

<p>&quot;I love the costume,&quot; Gadot said. &quot;I think it&#39;s beautiful, I think it&#39;s practical, easy to move in and to fight. And I also think it&#39;s sexy.&quot;</p>

<p>The Warner Bros movie returns to the origins of Diana Prince, growing up in an all-female paradise island of Amazonian warriors who teach her knowledge, language and fighting skills.</p>

<p>Gadot, 32, says the Wonder Woman created by Jenkins is far from perfect, and that&#39;s what makes her interesting.</p>

<p>&quot;She&#39;s not only super strong and confident and unapologetic, but she can be very vulnerable and confused and insecure,&quot; Gadot said.</p>

"We tried to make a movie for everybody a la the grand classic films from 'Superman 1' to 'Indiana Jones,' so I hope we actually get a little of everyone," she added, referring to hopes that both men and women would see the movie. Since her inception in 1941 in DC comic books with her patriotic red bustier embossed with a golden eagle and blue shorts with white stars, Wonder Woman has become a symbol of female empowerment in a comic book world dominated by male superheroes like Batman, Superman and Iron Man, and by male fans. <p><strong>What&rsquo;s Hot</strong></p>

<p>You know there is something wrong with a film when you enjoy a new character&rsquo;s antics more than that of the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. New entrant to the franchise, Javier Bardem as the undead Captain Salazar is the pick of the lot, closely followed by Geoffrey Rush&rsquo;s Captain Hector Barbossa.</p>

<p>There is something about Javier Bardem. Every time he appears on screen you are left awestruck, even if he&rsquo;s a mere spectator. He owns the screen the way very few can. The Spanish dialect he adapts for his character of the &lsquo;Pirate Killer&rsquo; is the film&rsquo;s highlight and speaks volumes about his talent. Of course his character is helped by some brilliant special effects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, the main antagonist of the first part and since then an unlikely ally of Captain Jack Sparrow, is spot on. His character in this one feels like an extension of this month&rsquo;s initial release Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2&rsquo;s fan favourite Yondu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smythe is breathtakingly beautiful and an able performer. She is very easy on eyes from the first scene till the last. If they are planning to reboot the film next then Brenton Thwaites as Will Turner&rsquo;s son Henry Turner is a good bet to take it forward.</p>

<p>Jack Sparrow&rsquo;s crew, toplined by Kevin McNally as Gibbs, provide ample amount of humour. In fact there were only a few good laughs in the film, one being &lsquo;the public execution&rsquo; scene.</p>

<p>Special Effects by Lucas Films is one of the best in recent times and may get the film an Oscar Nomination. Film has a high usage of background score and it helps in a big way, however, the iconic Jack Sparrow theme was underused.</p>

<p>Having said that, the film scores most in the cinematography department, for which we have Paul Cameron to thank. Besides that, there are fun action scenes, particularly the climax of the film which looks extremely beautiful and is bound to give you an adrenaline rush. In fact it saves the film from being a major disappointment.</p>

<p><strong>What&rsquo;s Not</strong></p>

<p>You know a ship is in danger if its Captain is incompetent. That&rsquo;s where lies the problem of this film. It breaks my heart to see the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, becoming a caricature of itself. It felt like Depp was sleepwalking through the film. There was just no effort on his part. His half-hearted and disinterested performance makes the film a rather unpleasant watch. And it was not just his performance but the character he plays, too, had nothing to do in the film. His was probably the most unimportant and irrelevant character in the film even though he was made to be the main lead.</p>

<p>Even in earlier films, Jack Sparrow has always been this clumsy, goof ball but he always had a flair of smartness that helped him have the last laugh even against the biggest of his enemies. But here not once did he seem like a hero (except for a five minute flashback scene as Young Jack Sparrow), every damn time he is saved by either Henry Turner, Captain Barbossa or his own crew, and in fact the &lsquo;Trident Hunt&rsquo; in the film is headed by Carina Smythe. So what exactly was he doing in the film? I have absolutely no idea. His was a hollow, soul-less character and served no purpose whatsoever to the film&rsquo;s plotline. Captain Jack Sparrow had no relevance to the story at all. Period.</p>

<p>Storywise, the film had no novelty factor, with multiple sub-plots that tend to get confusing after a point. The pace was so slow at times, that even at an odd 129 minutes of its runtime, it might exhaust you.</p>

<p><strong>What To Do</strong></p>

<p>In my opinion Jack Sparrow shouldn&rsquo;t have returned as this was an insult to his legend. After watching the film, my reaction was similar to that of Henry Turner, when he sees Sparrow for the first time &ndash; disappointed. Watch the film solely for the majestic Javier Bardem and his performance as the undead Captain Salazar. In fact it won&rsquo;t be wrong to call the &lsquo;lifeless&rsquo; Captain Salazar, as the &lsquo;life&rsquo; of the film. I give it a generous 2.5 stars, half extra for Bardem and that well executed, resounding climax.</p>

<p>Gary Oldman is playing the role of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. He made the announcement while speaking at Focus Features&#39; slate presentation. The British actor revealed it took over 200 hours in the make-up chair to be transformed into the former British Prime Minister for new Joe Wright&#39;s film Darkest Hour.</p>

<p>But going that extra mile really works as the actor is unrecognisable in the film.&nbsp;</p>
