In Iran, a woman was whipped 74 times for "violating public morals" by posting a photo with her head uncovered. The woman, identified as 33-year-old Roya Heshmati, was also fined for not covering her head, said the Iranian judiciary.

On the Judiciary's Mizan online website, a statement posted late on Saturday (Jan 6) said: "The convicted, Roya Heshmati, encouraged permissiveness (by appearing) disgracefully in busy public places in Tehran."

"Her penalty of 74 strokes of the lash was carried out in accordance with the law and with sharia," and "for violating public morals," added Mizan, as reported by news agency AFP.

A Kurdish human rights organisation, Hengaw, has identified Heshmati as a woman of Kurdish origin, who is an outspoken critic of the Islamic regime's hijab law.

Talking to Shargh daily, a popular reformist newspaper, Heshmati's lawyer Maziar Tatai said that the woman was arrested in April "for publishing a photo on social media without wearing a headscarf."

She was also ordered to pay a fine of 12 million rials (around $285) for "not wearing the Muslim veil in public".

Tatai, as per Entekhab, also alleged that the charges against Heshmati were changed several times. Throughout the process at different times, she was charged with "propaganda against the regime," "being in the streets without a religious hijab," "harming public modesty," "producing vulgar content," and "encouraging people to commit corruption".

The defiant woman, as per The Jerusalem Post, removed her hijab upon entering the court where her flogging was to take place.&nbsp;

The controversy emerged when, at an event in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah had indicated that women could wear the hijab if they desired, leading to speculations that the ban had been revoked. However, the government, according to the CM, was still deliberating on the matter.

As per documents obtained by BBC Persian from the months of April and May, the government might plan on setting up "mobile courts" to punish the ones violating the dress code.

The documents reveal that even schoolgirls and celebrities would face the brunt of the dress code breach with girls facing action by the education ministry and celebrities being charged up to 10-year-imprisonment over "promoting corruption".

According to BBC Persian, Iran's government has not yet commented on these reports.

However, an Iranian newspaper that published a concise section of one of the directives has been charged with publicising classified documents.

Out of those, some directives were incorporated in the controversial "Hijab and Chastity Bill" which at present is under review by the Guardian Council watchdog before being converted into a law.

As per the leaked documents, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi gave the go-ahead to a slew of directives&nbsp;to coordinate action by the government and other entities in order to address the issue of women not adorning hijabs, months prior to when the parliament began debating the hijab bill.

When the police arrived at the scene, they initially attempted to de-escalate the situation by asking her to calm down and show her hands to assess any potential danger.

The escalating nature of the situation left the law enforcement officers with no alternative but to open fire.

According to government spokesman Olivier Veran, "What happened then was that law enforcement officers had no option but to open fire on this woman given the danger of the situation." The woman sustained a gunshot wound to her abdomen, and she was&nbsp;transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. She is in a critical condition as reported by AFP.&nbsp;

Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez told AFP that the woman's identity remained unconfirmed but suggested that she might be the same individual who, in 2021, had made threats against urban patrols involved in the counter-terrorism Sentinelle operation.

At that time, she had been placed in a psychiatric ward due to mental health concerns. Reports also revealed that the woman had made threats of self-harm and potential explosive actions.

Despite the woman's threats, it was determined that she did not possess any explosives at the time of the shooting.&nbsp;

"They need visibility, it's so important, so working with the community to come up with the designs has been really exciting because we didn't know what it was going to look like until now," he said about the 'Strength of Hijab' sculpture.

The 'Black British History is British History' sculpture was designed by Perry and Canaan Brown, and was installed in Winson Green in May. However, shortly after it was installed, the sculpture was defaced.

As per BBC, Perry has acknowledged that the upcoming sculpture could also be controversial.&nbsp;

"There's a possibility that this piece could be controversial for many different reasons."

The 61-year-old actress had appeared at a movie ceremony without wearing a headscarf and then shared photos on social media.

After the 1979 Islamic revolution, wearing a hijab has been compulsory for all women in Iran.

Bayegan had also expressed support for last year's protests triggered by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested in September for allegedly violating the strict dress code.

Bayegan rose to prominence after the 1979 revolution and is best known for her role in "Sarbedaran", a television series about Iran's resistance to Mongol invasion in the 14th century.

<h2>Police patrols increased</h2>

Since the Mahsa Amini protests, women in Iran have increasingly flouted the dress code. State media said on Sunday that there were increased police patrols on the street which were aimed at catching those ignoring the law.

The authorities in Iran are clamping down pn dissent as the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death approaches apparently to prevent revival of protests that had rocked the counry last year.

Reuters has reported that Journalists, lawyers, activists, human rights advocates and students have been arrested &nbsp;summoned or faced other measures in a campaign that one activist described as "instilling fear and intimidation".

Senior officials are now defending theh new crackdown claiming that it is necessary to maintain stability.

Last year, when the protests were at their peak, Iranian authority responded by cracking down on protests.

A senior former Iranian official said the authorities should not ignore realities on the ground this time round.

"People are still angry over Amini's death and they are frustrated because of their daily struggle to bring food to their tables," the former official said who Reuters said asked not to be identified.

"These wrong decisions may have painful consequences for the establishment. People cannot take more pressure. If it continues, we will witness street protests again."

Under Iran's Islamic Sharia law, which was imposed after the 1979 revolution, Iranian women are mandated to cover their hair. Violators have faced public rebuke, fines, or arrest.

Two women were arrested in Iran for not wearing the hijab after&nbsp;a rowdy man created ruckus attacking the duo with what seemingly appears to be yoghurt in the&nbsp;northwest city of Mashad, as per reports.&nbsp;

The incident took place when two women were waiting in line at a shop. A man then enters the shop and starts talking to the woman in rage. He starts raising objection to the women for not wearing hijab (headscraf), which is part of essential dress code in Iran.

In the video footage that is now gaining traction on social media, the man then picks up a container from a shelf inside the shop and pours the liquid, seemingly yoghurt, on&nbsp;the heads of the women. He repeatedly does this and then stands there staring at the women with anger.&nbsp;

At this point, the shopkeeper comes running and gives a tight push to the man on his chest flinging him out of the shop.&nbsp;From the video, it can be seen that many people were present inside the shop at the time of the episode.&nbsp;
