Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said, “Unveiling is tantamount to enmity with (our) values. Those “who commit such anomalous acts will be punished” and will be “prosecuted without mercy,” he added, without detailing the punishments.&nbsp;

The warning reflects the government's mandatory hijab law being strengthened by Iran's interior ministry.

The hijab is “one of the civilisational foundations of the Iranian nation” and “one of the practical principles of the Islamic Republic,” the interior ministry statement said, asserting that there would be no “retreat or tolerance” on the issue.

The comments by Iran's chess federation on Wednesday come after Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, 25, was seen without the headscarf at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The authorities perceived her act as a show of support for the protests against the Iranian regime that were triggered following the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September.

"This chess player participated freely and at her own expense", Hassan Tamini, head of Iran's chess federation, was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

"Khademalsharieh did not participate in these competitions through the federation, but went independently and did this action," he added.

Iranian Women athletes are required to adhere to Iran’s strict dress code as per Islamic laws, which includes covering their heads while participating in international events.

"We didn't expect this chess player to do this because she had participated in the previous tournaments in compliance with the standards", Tamini said.

According to the International Chess Federation website, Khademalsharieh is ranked 804 in the world.

Notably, she is not the first women athlete to compete in an international event without a hijab.

In November, a speed skater, Niloufar Mardani, was chastised by the authorities for attending a competition in Turkey without a headscarf.

Mardani participated "without authorisation," the sports ministry said, quoted by Iran's Fars news agency.

Similarly, climber Elnaz Rekabi wore only a headband during a competition event at the Asian Championships in Seoul in October.

After two months of intense protest sparked by the custodial death of a 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini arrested for allegedly violating the country's strict female dress code—headscarf—Iran has finally scrapped its morality police units, its top judicial officer reportedly said.

"Morality police have nothing to do with the judiciary" and have been abolished, Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri was quoted as saying late Saturday by the ISNA&nbsp;news&nbsp;agency.

The attorney general made these remarks on Saturday at a religious conference while responding&nbsp;to a participant who asked "why the morality police were being shut down", the report said.

The announcement came a day after Jafar Montazeri said that "both parliament and the judiciary are working (on the issue)" of whether the law requiring women to cover their heads needs to be changed.

However, he did not specify what could be modified in the law by the two bodies, which are both largely in the hands of conservatives.

The decision also comes in the wake of intense pressure from the opposition parties to abolish the morality police units.&nbsp;

On Saturday, the Union of Islamic Iran People Party, formed by relatives of former reformist president Mohammad Khatami, demanded that authorities “prepare the legal elements paving the way for the cancellation of the mandatory hijab law”.

The opposition also called for the Islamic republic to “officially announce the end of the activities of the morality police” and “allow peaceful demonstrations”, it said in a statement.

The "Morality Police" or the Gasht-e Ershad or "Guidance Patrol" has been subject to international sanctions for the crackdown against protesters.&nbsp;It was established during the regime of hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to "spread the culture of modesty and hijab". They began patrolling&nbsp;in 2006.

Women protesters have been burning&nbsp;their hijab, chopping their hair, shouting&nbsp;anti-government slogans and tossing&nbsp;turbans off Muslim clerics' heads&nbsp;since Amini's death on September 16.

Mahsa Amini, 22, was killed on September 16 while being held by morality police for allegedly breaking dress code regulations. This led to widespread protests that the government has labelled "riots."

Mehr news agency reported that the bank manager in Qom province, near Tehran, "had provided bank services on Thursday to an unveiled woman". As a result, he was "removed from his position by order of the governor," Mehr quoted deputy governor Ahmad Hajizadeh. Mehr added that the&nbsp;video of the unveiled woman "elicited a lot of reaction on social media."
