Explained: How Hamas attack has revived wounds of Holocaust for Israeli Jews

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Tuesday (Oct 10) that a senior Hamas official had been killed in an airstrike overnight. IDF said that it killed Hamas's minister of economy and another senior member in drone strikes in the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;

According to IDF, the senior official has been identified as Jawad Abu Shamala, the Minister of Economy of the military group's political arm.&nbsp;

The military said that Shamala managed the terror group's funds, and "earmarked funds for financing and directing terror in and outside the Gaza Strip".&nbsp;

IDF identified the second person it killed as Zakariya Abu Moammar, who was the head of the terror group's internal relations. The IDF said that Moammar was a confidant to Hamas's Gaza chief, Yahya Sinwar.&nbsp;

"He was a senior Hamas decision-maker and coordinator between terror groups in the Gaza Strip," IDF said.&nbsp;

The IDF also said that it launched massive airstrikes against a neighbourhood of Gaza City, targeting more than 100 sites.&nbsp;

The neighbourhood is dubbed by the army as al-Furqan, after a mosque in the area. Israel claimed that it is a "nest of terror" used by Hamas to launch attacks against it.&nbsp;

Israel retaliated with air strikes after fighters from the Palestinian militant group stormed Israeli towns on Saturday (Oct 7) in an assault launched from the Gaza enclave, killing more than 1,000 Israelis, mostly civilians. They also took dozens hostage.&nbsp;

Israel has ordered a "complete siege" of the Gaza Strip and the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates said on Tuesday that nothing would stop them from crushing Hamas.&nbsp;

"We'll do everything needed in order to make sure that those people will not threaten and will not hurt our citizens again," Ambassador Amir Hayek told Reuters at the embassy in Abu Dhabi.

"We are talking about kids, women, elderly people, families. These people have been murdered, not for something they did. But for who they are," he further said.&nbsp;

Hamas threatened to kill Israeli citizens taken captive on live television if Israel bombarded locations in Gaza. In a statement to Al-Jazeera, Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson for the so-called military wing of the militant group that controls Gaza claimed:&nbsp;"Each targeting of our people will be accompanied by the live televised execution of the enemy's civilian prisoners."

Israel has already flagged the modus operandi of Hamas as the one opted by the Islamic State terrorist group in the early 2010s, citing the brutalities meted out to the captive Israelis since last weekend.&nbsp;

"Because the enemy does not comprehend the language of humanity and morals, we shall address him in the language he understands," Hamas spokesperson told the Qatar-based publication late Monday evening (Oct 9).

Israeli TV channels said the death toll from the Hamas attack had climbed to 900.

In Gaza, Israel has upped the ante&nbsp;with its most intensive retaliatory strikes ever, which have killed more than 500 people since Saturday.

Several Hamas security headquarters and ministries were hit. The strikes also destroyed some roads and houses.

In a further signal of Israel's rapid shift to a war footing, a cabinet member from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party said it could set up a national unity government joined by opposition leaders within hours.

Netanyahu told mayors of southern towns hit by Saturday's surprise assault that Israel's response would "change the Middle East".

He also stated that Washington sought to monopolise the international efforts aimed at forging peace in the region, further condemning the US for not seeking compromises acceptable to both sides.

"I think that many people will agree with me that this is a vivid example of the failure of United States policy in the Middle East," Putin told visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.

"The US tried to monopolise the solution (of the crisis between Israel and Palestinians), but, unfortunately, was not concerned with finding compromises acceptable to both sides, but, on the contrary, promoted its own ideas about how it should be done and put both sides under pressure. That's both sides, at one or another," he said.

<h2>Putin calls for creation of Palestinian state</h2>

Putin accused the West of not taking into consideration the fundamental interests of the Palestinian people.

He said that it was necessary to "implement the decisions of the UN Security Council on the creation of an independent sovereign Palestinian state."

A day earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov released a statement saying that the creation of a Palestinian state was the "most reliable" solution for peace in Israel.&nbsp;

After the United States moved warships closer to its ally&nbsp;Israel in a show of support, the Kremlin remarked that there was a "high risk" of a third party entering the conflict between Tel Aviv and Hamas.&nbsp;

"The risk of third forces becoming involved in this conflict is high," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by the TASS news agency.&nbsp;

"It is very important to find ways as soon as possible to move towards some kind of negotiation process in order to reduce this escalation and move away from a military solution," he said.&nbsp;

According to the Israeli police, the incident took place near Netviot, a city near Gaza, where the cops were hunting down Hamas operatives amid a raging war that started this weekend.

The clip further shows a cop purportedly overtaking the car as another policeman on a bike shoots at the terrorists inside the car.

When the car stopped, the cops continued firing multiple rounds at them.

“Police and Border Police officers heroically neutralized two armed terrorists outside of Netivot on Saturday. We will continue working on the front lines to defend our civilians from terror,” Israel Police said in a post on X.

According to a report by flight tracking website, Flightradar24, about 50 per cent of the flights scheduled for Tel Aviv did not operate on Sunday (Oct 8) and one-third of the flights were cancelled on Monday as of 6:41 pm (local time).&nbsp;

<h2>What have the airlines said?</h2>

Indian air carrier Air India said that it would suspend the flights operating to and from Tel Aviv till at least October 14, “for the safety of our passengers and crew,” said the airline’s spokesperson, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added that they will provide all possible support to passengers who have confirmed bookings which have now been cancelled.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, American air carriers United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines, on Sunday, suspended direct flights to Israel following an advisory by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) urging airlines to use caution.&nbsp;

Virgin Atlantic said it would continue to run some flights in and out of Tel Aviv but customers could rebook or request a refund until October 15.&nbsp;

The airline said that it was operating “in accordance with the instructions of the Israeli security forces,” and all flights are now departing only from one terminal at the Ben Gurion airport.&nbsp;
