<p>Satellite data shows that sea-ice around Antarctica has receded to historically low levels, a worrying trend indicating areas earlier perceived as resistant to global warming are no longer able to hold up.</p>

<p>According to polar experts, thinning ice at the two poles could have far-reaching ramifications for the planet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It will also have a huge impact on climate change as Antarctica’s ice plays a big role in regulating the global temperature. The white ice reflects the Sun’s energy back into the atmosphere and cools water beneath it.</p>

<p>The ice that floats on the Antarctic Ocean's surface now measures less than 17 million sq km - that is 1.5 million sq km of sea ice less than the September average, and well below previous winter record lows, BBC reported.</p>

<p>Scientists are now rushing to identify the factors behind this rapid decline of snow ice in the South Polar Region.</p>

<h2><strong>How sea ice is formed in Antarctica?</strong></h2>

<p>Sea ice forms during Antarctica's winter season (March to October), later melting in the summer. It's an integral part of a larger system that includes icebergs, land ice, and expansive ice shelves extending from the coast.</p>

<p>Sea ice serves as a protective barrier for land ice, preventing the ocean from warming. Dr. Caroline Holmes of the British Antarctic Survey warns that the consequences of diminishing sea ice might become apparent during the transition to summer, potentially leading to an unstoppable feedback loop of ice melting.</p>

Sea ice around Antarctica recedes to historically low levels: Scientists

Earth's coldest and driest continent, Antarctica, is warming at an alarming rate. Now, the west Antarctic sheet particularly has started losing ice, contributing to a significant rise in sea level.

<p>The world has broiled through, what the meteorologists call the most searing Northern Hemisphere summer that has ever been recorded, with August capping a season of severe temperatures.</p>

<p>Last month was not only the hottest August scientists ever recorded but also the second most warm month measured after July, said the World Meteorological Organisation and the European climate service Copernicus on Wednesday (September 6).</p>

<p>August was nearly 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than pre-industrial averages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a statement by the WMO and Copernicus, the oceans, which constitute 70% of the Earth's surface, were recorded at about 21 C (69.8 F), which is the hottest ever and have set high-temperature marks for three consecutive months.</p>

<p>Scientists have blamed human practices like the burning of coal, oil and natural gas for climate change.</p>

<p>Climatologist Andrew Weaver said that world leaders and governments were also to be blamed for the current climate situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It’s time for global leaders to start telling the truth,” the Associated Press quoted Weaver, a professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria in Canada, as saying. “We will not limit warming to 1.5 C; we will not limit warming to 2.0 C. It’s all hands on deck now to prevent 3.0 C global warming — a level of warming that will wreak havoc worldwide.”&nbsp;</p>

NASA and US scientists say 2023 may be warmest year on record, and 2024 can be even hotter

<p>A judge in Montana, United States,&nbsp;who heard the country’s first constitutional climate trial earlier this year, has&nbsp;ruled in favour of the more than a dozen young plaintiffs, on Monday (August 14). This comes after 16 young people filed a lawsuit that sought to hold the officials in the state accountable for their inaction on climate change, in the US state.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the court order</strong></h2>

<p>In the order, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley ruled that Montana’s continued development of fossil fuels violates a clause in the state constitution that guarantees its citizens the right to a “clean and healthful environment.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Plaintiffs have a fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment, which includes climate as part of the environmental life-support system,” said Seeley&nbsp;in more than a 100-page ruling after the case closed on June 20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Montana is one of several states that have explicit environmental guarantees in their state constitution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the verdict will not stop the state from burning fossil fuels, it will reverse a recently passed state law that prevented government agencies from considering the impacts of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for development projects involving fossil fuels.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What was&nbsp;the case about?</strong></h2>

<p>“My initial reaction is, we’re pretty over the moon,” said Melissa Hornbein, an attorney who represented the plaintiffs in the 2020 lawsuit, according to The Guardian. She added, “It’s a very good order.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the attorneys for the plaintiffs called the court’s decision a “sweeping win”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Julia Olson, chief legal counsel and executive director of Our Children’s Trust said, “Today, for the first time in US history, a court ruled on the merits of a case that the government violated the constitutional rights of children through laws and actions that promote fossil fuels, ignore climate change, and disproportionately imperil young people.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “This is a huge win for Montana, for youth, for democracy, and for our climate. A judge in Montana, United States, who heard the country’s first constitutional climate trial earlier this year, has ruled in favour of the more than a dozen young plaintiffs, on Monday (August 14).

A judge in Montana, United States, who heard the country’s first constitutional climate trial earlier this year, has ruled in favour of the more than a dozen young plaintiffs, on Monday (August 14). This comes after 16 young people filed a lawsuit that sought to hold the officials in the state accountable for their inaction on climate change, in the US state. About the court order In the order, District Court Judge Kathy Seeley ruled that Montana’s continued development of fossil fuels violates a clause in the state constitution that guarantees its citizens the right to a “clean and healthful environment.” “Plaintiffs have a fundamental constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment, which includes climate as part of the environmental life-support system,” said Seeley in more than a 100-page ruling after the case closed on June 20. Notably, Montana is one of several states that have explicit environmental guarantees in their state constitution. While the verdict will not stop the state from burning fossil fuels, it will reverse a recently passed state law that prevented government agencies from considering the impacts of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for development projects involving fossil fuels. What was the case about? The case, Held v. Montana, has been closely watched as similar litigations have been filed across the country. US: Court rules in favour of Montana youth in landmark climate trial

<p>In a tragic incident that occurred on Monday morning (August 14), a soldier collapsed and subsequently died during a training exercise in a forest near the central city of Elad in Israel.</p>

<p>The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the soldier's untimely demise.</p>

<p>Preliminary reports from first responders suggest that the soldier may have succumbed to heatstroke or dehydration, highlighting the potential risks associated with intense training activities in hot weather conditions, reported the Times of Israel.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Investigation underway to uncover cause</strong></h2>

<p>The soldier, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting the IDF to withhold publicising the incident until the soldier's family could be notified.</p>

<p>Having recently completed his basic training, the soldier was a member of the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit. The tragic event unfolded during a crawling exercise, part of the unit's advanced training curriculum, conducted between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.</p>

<p>The soldier's plight was noticed by one of his commanders, who immediately initiated preliminary medical assistance while simultaneously alerting paramedics.</p>

<p>Additional support was summoned as medical personnel from the Air Force's search-and-rescue Unit 669 were dispatched to the location.</p>

<p>Despite these efforts, the soldier's life could not be saved. At this point, the military is unaware of any preexisting health conditions that may have contributed to the soldier's demise.</p>

<p>Beating a 2016 record, the daily global sea surface temperatures have reached 20.96C, which is far above the average for this time of the year, reports BBC. In 2016, a record was set when the naturally occurring El Niño was in full swing.</p>

This can also accelerate the melting of glaciers, which in turn flow into oceans, finally contributing to rising sea levels.&nbsp;</p>

Ocean temperatures set new record, scientists warn we are in hot soup

<p>In a groundbreaking study, novel research has revealed a concerning trend — waves are surging to greater heights and surf reaching at least 13 feet (approximately 4 metres) is becoming more frequent off the coast of California.</p>

<p>This escalating wave height has been attributed to the warming of the planet, as evidenced by meticulous analysis of seismic records dating back to 1931, an approach devised by Oceanographer Peter Bromirski at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.</p>

<p>The study stands as a testament to the profound impact of climate change on oceanic dynamics and coastal regions, reported the Associated Press.</p>

<h2><strong>Seismic records unveil waves' escalating stature</strong></h2>

<p>The methodology employed by Bromirski is distinctive in its use of seismic records to chart the transformation in wave height.</p>

<p>As waves crash against the shore, they generate a reverberation of energy through the seafloor, a signal captured by seismographs designed to detect seismic activity.</p>

<p>The intensity of this signal correlates with the height of the waves.</p>

<p>Conventionally, wave height data relied on buoys deployed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), but these records only extended back to 1980, limiting the ability to comprehensively analyse historical trends.</p>

<p><strong>Also read |&nbsp;</strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/move-over-blue-whale-scientists-discover-40-million-year-old-earths-biggest-animal-ever-621809">Not blue whale, this 40mn-year-old animal is largest ever to have lived on Earth</a></p>

<h2><strong>Unearthing decades of data: A gruelling endeavour</strong></h2>

<p>To extend the timeline of investigation, Bromirski enlisted a team of undergraduate students to scrutinise seismic data spanning decades.</p>

<p>This painstaking endeavour involved digitising voluminous paper records, a process that unfolded over several years.</p>

<p>Despite its labour-intensive nature, this undertaking yielded invaluable insights into the evolution of wave heights along California's coast over nearly a century.</p>

<p>The results of this study were striking. Average wave heights during winter months have augmented by up to a foot since 1970, a period that coincides with the onset of accelerated global warming.</p>

<p>Moreover, occurrences of swells measuring at least 13 feet have doubled in frequency between 1996 and 2016, in contrast to the period from 1949 to 1969.</p>

<p>A notable revelation was the absence of prolonged periods of exceptionally low wave heights prior to 1970, a phenomenon that has become virtually non-existent in subsequent years.</p>

<h2><strong>Implications for coastal communities&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>These escalating wave patterns are not confined to the realm of statistics.</p>

<p>They manifest in tangible ways, with cascading consequences for coastal regions. Erosion, coastal flooding, and damage to vital infrastructure have surged, particularly when coupled with the rising sea levels attributed to climate change. Bromirski emphasised that these changes amplify the likelihood of destructive events and their frequency, contributing to a heightened risk landscape.</p>

<p>Oceanographer Gary Griggs, from the University of California Santa Cruz, who spoke to the Associated Press, noted that while a one-foot increase in wave height over half a century might not seem dramatic, it aligns with the broader trends seen in the world’s oceans.</p>

In a groundbreaking study, novel research has revealed a concerning trend — waves are surging to greater heights and surf reaching at least 13 feet (approximately 4 metres) is becoming more frequent off the coast of California. This escalating wave height has been attributed to the warming of the planet, as evidenced by meticulous analysis of seismic records dating back to 1931, an approach devised by Oceanographer Peter Bromirski at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The study stands as a testament to the profound impact of climate change on oceanic dynamics and coastal regions, reported the Associated Press. Seismic records unveil waves' escalating stature The methodology employed by Bromirski is distinctive in its use of seismic records to chart the transformation in wave height. As waves crash against the shore, they generate a reverberation of energy through the seafloor, a signal captured by seismographs designed to detect seismic activity. The intensity of this signal correlates with the height of the waves. Conventionally, wave height data relied on buoys deployed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), but these records only extended back to 1980, limiting the ability to comprehensively analyse historical trends. Also read | Not blue whale, this 40mn-year-old animal is largest ever to have lived on Earth Unearthing decades of data: A gruelling endeavour To extend the timeline of investigation, Bromirski enlisted a team of undergraduate students to scrutinise seismic data spanning decades. This painstaking endeavour involved digitising voluminous paper records, a process that unfolded over several years. Despite its labour-intensive nature, this undertaking yielded invaluable insights into the evolution of wave heights along California's coast over nearly a century. The results of this study were striking. Average wave heights during winter months have augmented by up to a foot since 1970, a period that coincides with the onset of accelerated global warming. Moreover, occurrences of swells measuring at least 13 feet have doubled in frequency between 1996 and 2016, in contrast to the period from 1949 to 1969. A notable revelation was the absence of prolonged periods of exceptionally low wave heights prior to 1970, a phenomenon that has become virtually non-existent in subsequent years. Also watch | What caused record rainfall in Beijing & North China? Implications for coastal communities These escalating wave patterns are not confined to the realm of statistics. They manifest in tangible ways, with cascading consequences for coastal regions. Erosion, coastal flooding, and damage to vital infrastructure have surged, particularly when coupled with the rising sea levels attributed to climate change. Bromirski emphasised that these changes amplify the likelihood of destructive events and their frequency, contributing to a heightened risk landscape. Oceanographer Gary Griggs, from the University of California Santa Cruz, who spoke to the Associated Press, noted that while a one-foot increase in wave height over half a century might not seem dramatic, it aligns with the broader trends seen in the world’s oceans. 'Climate change out of control': First week of July declared hottest on record

<p>The target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) is moving out of reach, climate experts say, with nations failing to set more ambitious goals despite months of record-breaking heat on land and sea.</p>

<p>As envoys gathered in Bonn in early June to prepare for this year's annual climate talks in November, average global surface air temperatures were more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for several days, the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said.</p>

<p>Though mean temperatures had temporarily breached the 1.5C threshold before, this was the first time they had done so in the northern hemisphere summer that starts on June 1. Sea temperatures also broke April and May records.</p>

<p>"We've run out of time because change takes time," said Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climatologist at Australia's University of New South Wales.</p>

<p>As climate envoys from the two biggest greenhouse gas emitters prepare to meet next month, temperatures broke June records in the Chinese capital Beijing, and extreme heatwaves have hit the United States.</p>

<p>Parts of North America were some 10C above the seasonal average this month, and smoke from forest fires blanketed Canada and the U.S. East Coast in hazardous haze, with carbon emissions estimated at a record 160 million metric tons.</p>

<p>In India, one of the most climate vulnerable regions, deaths were reported to have spiked as a result of sustained high temperatures, and extreme heat has been recorded in Spain, Iran and Vietnam, raising fears that last year's deadly summer could become routine.</p>

<p>Countries agreed in Paris in 2015 to try to keep long-term average temperature rises within 1.5C, but there is now a 66% likelihood the annual mean will cross the 1.5C threshold for at least one whole year between now and 2027, the World Meteorological Organization predicted in May.</p>

<h2>'Quadruple whammy'</h2>

<p>High land temperatures have been matched by those on the sea, with warming intensified by an El Nino event and other factors.</p>

<p>Global average sea surface temperatures hit 21C in late March and have remained at record levels for the time of year throughout April and May. Australia's weather agency warned that Pacific and Indian Ocean sea temperatures could be 3C warmer than normal by October.</p>

<p>Global warming is the major factor, said Piers Forster, professor of climate physics at the University of Leeds, but El Nino, the decline in Saharan dust blowing over the ocean and the use of low-sulphur shipping fuels were also to blame.</p>

<p>"So in all, oceans are being hit by a quadruple whammy," he said. "It's a sign of things to come."</p>

<p>Thousands of dead fish have been washing up on Texan beaches and heat-induced algal blooms have also been blamed for killing sea lions and dolphins in California.</p>

<p>Warmer seas could also mean less wind and rain, creating a vicious circle that leads to even more heat, said Annalisa Bracco, a climatologist at the Georgia Institute of Technology.</p>

<p>Though this year's high sea temperatures are caused by a "perfect combination" of circumstances, the ecological impact could endure, she said.</p>

<p>"The ocean is going to have a very slow response as it accumulates (heat) slowly but also keeps it for very long."</p>

<h2>The road to Dubai</h2>

<p>Climate experts say the extent and frequency of extreme weather are increasing, and this year has also seen punishing droughts across the world, as well as a rare and deadly cyclone in Africa.</p>

<p>The Worldwide Fund for Nature, however, warned of a "worrying lack of momentum" during climate talks in Bonn this month, with little progress made on key issues like fossil fuels and finance ahead of November's COP28 climate talks in Dubai.</p>

<p>"It was very detached from what was going on outside of the building in Bonn - I was very disappointed by that," said Li Shuo, Greenpeace's senior climate adviser in Beijing.</p>

<p>"We are really getting to the moment of truth ... I am hoping that the sheer reality will help us change people's moves and change the politics."</p>

<p>Talks between the United States and China could resume next week with U.S. climate envoy John Kerry set to visit Beijing, though few expect it to add momentum to climate negotiations.</p>

The target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) is moving out of reach, climate experts say, with nations failing to set more ambitious goals despite months of record-breaking heat on land and sea.

The target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) is moving out of reach, climate experts say, with nations failing to set more ambitious goals despite months of record-breaking heat on land and sea. As envoys gathered in Bonn in early June to prepare for this year's annual climate talks in November, average global surface air temperatures were more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for several days, the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said. Though mean temperatures had temporarily breached the 1.5C threshold before, this was the first time they had done so in the northern hemisphere summer that starts on June 1. Sea temperatures also broke April and May records. "We've run out of time because change takes time," said Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climatologist at Australia's University of New South Wales. As climate envoys from the two biggest greenhouse gas emitters prepare to meet next month, temperatures broke June records in the Chinese capital Beijing, and extreme heatwaves have hit the United States. Parts of North America were some 10C above the seasonal average this month, and smoke from forest fires blanketed Canada and the U.S. East Coast in hazardous haze, with carbon emissions estimated at a record 160 million metric tons. In India, one of the most climate vulnerable regions, deaths were reported to have spiked as a result of sustained high temperatures, and extreme heat has been recorded in Spain, Iran and Vietnam, raising fears that last year's deadly summer could become routine. Countries agreed in Paris in 2015 to try to keep long-term average temperature rises within 1.5C, but there is now a 66% likelihood the annual mean will cross the 1.5C threshold for at least one whole year between now and 2027, the World Meteorological Organization predicted in May. 'Quadruple whammy' High land temperatures have been matched by those on the sea, with warming intensified by an El Nino event and other factors. Global average sea surface temperatures hit 21C in late March and have remained at record levels for the time of year throughout April and May. Australia's weather agency warned that Pacific and Indian Ocean sea temperatures could be 3C warmer than normal by October. Global warming is the major factor, said Piers Forster, professor of climate physics at the University of Leeds, but El Nino, the decline in Saharan dust blowing over the ocean and the use of low-sulphur shipping fuels were also to blame. "So in all, oceans are being hit by a quadruple whammy," he said. "It's a sign of things to come." Thousands of dead fish have been washing up on Texan beaches and heat-induced algal blooms have also been blamed for killing sea lions and dolphins in California. Warmer seas could also mean less wind and rain, creating a vicious circle that leads to even more heat, said Annalisa Bracco, a climatologist at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Though this year's high sea temperatures are caused by a "perfect combination" of circumstances, the ecological impact could endure, she said. "The ocean is going to have a very slow response as it accumulates (heat) slowly but also keeps it for very long." The road to Dubai Climate experts say the extent and frequency of extreme weather are increasing, and this year has also seen punishing droughts across the world, as well as a rare and deadly cyclone in Africa. The Worldwide Fund for Nature, however, warned of a "worrying lack of momentum" during climate talks in Bonn this month, with little progress made on key issues like fossil fuels and finance ahead of November's COP28 climate talks in Dubai. "It was very detached from what was going on outside of the building in Bonn - I was very disappointed by that," said Li Shuo, Greenpeace's senior climate adviser in Beijing. "We are really getting to the moment of truth ... I am hoping that the sheer reality will help us change people's moves and change the politics." Talks between the United States and China could resume next week with U.S. climate envoy John Kerry set to visit Beijing, though few expect it to add momentum to climate negotiations. "This is more a trust-building exercise," Li said. "I don't think either side will be able to push the other side to say much more than they are willing to do - the politics won't allow that." World hits record land, sea temperatures as climate change fuels 2023 extremes

The world is getting hotter. Both land and sea temperatures are at a record-breaking high. And as per climate experts, the target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius is moving out of reach. Parts of north America were 10 degree Celsius above the seasonal average this month. Wildfires in Canada and the US East coast have led to record-breaking carbon emissions- 160 million metric tons. Extreme heat has also been recorded in India, China, Spain, Iran and Vietnam punishing droughts have also been witnessed across the world this year sea surface temperatures are also rapidly increasing.

<p>A recent study has revealed that volcanic eruptions are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change. Volcanologist Jonathan Fink and Associate Professor of Geography Idowu "Jola" Ajibade conducted the research to understand how climate change affects the frequency of volcanic eruptions and other consequences. They also examined how volcanic activities might change in the future, based on the limited knowledge about the phenomenon that scientists possess today.</p>

<p>Fink explained that the field of volcano science progresses steadily alongside technological advancements but can also undergo abrupt and significant changes in response to particularly large or impactful eruptions. The study was aimed at assessing how volcanic behaviour may alter over time as climate change continues to, directly and indirectly, influence volcanic activities.</p>

<p>According to Fink, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, depletion of aquifers, and erosion of mountains can all impact the likelihood and frequency of volcanic eruptions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also mentioned that as climate change's impact on society intensifies, there is a growing interest in exploring "geoengineering" solutions such as injecting aerosols into the stratosphere to cool the Earth's surface.</p>

<p>Additionally, the study highlighted that the Pacific Northwest region in North America has experienced an increasing frequency and overlap of various natural and human-induced disasters over the past two decades.&nbsp;</p>
