The phenomena of climate change and global warming took centre stage in South Asia too in 2023, perhaps like never before. Torrential unseasonal rains, floods, weather extremes, melting Himalayan ice, and more put the focus on the region being a major victim of climate change as well as the need for joint efforts from countries in South Asia to take on the problem.

The Alps make up the most popular ski destination in the world. but the industry now faces an existential threat as it battles the looming danger of climate change. The region's warmest autumn on record forced many ski resorts in the Alps to delay their opening times this year.

Researchers for the first time have simulated all stages of a runaway greenhouse effect and found that our green and blue planet will turn into an uninhabitable “hell” in the coming centuries.&nbsp;

A team of astronomers on Monday (Dec 18)&nbsp;said that it would take only a couple of degrees of rise in Earth’s temperature or a slight increase in the Sun’s luminosity&nbsp;to initiate an “irreversible” runaway warming, making it as inhospitable as Venus whose average surface temperature is around 464 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

<h2>What was the research about?</h2>

A team of astronomers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), with support from France’s CNRS laboratories in Paris and Bordeaux, said that they were the first ones to simulate all stages of a runaway greenhouse effect, the results of which were published in the Astronomy and Astrophysics review.

The greenhouse effect is the process through which certain gases including water vapour in Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat. While some of these gases occur naturally, others are generated by human activity like burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

The runaway greenhouse effect is when solar irradiation increases to a point that it sets off a dramatic, snowballing rise in a planet’s temperature.&nbsp;

The idea of a runaway of the greenhouse effect is not new and climate change is not the same as a runaway greenhouse process, but researchers warned that Earth was not far from the “apocalyptical scenario”.&nbsp;

The runaway greenhouse effect envisions a planet evolving from a temperate state like the one currently on Earth to one with surface temperatures of above 1,000 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

For this study, scientists “demonstrated that from initial stages of the process, the atmospheric structure and cloud coverage undergo significant changes, leading to an almost-unstoppable and very complicated to reverse runaway greenhouse effect".

While the research, in part, was designed to provide a tool for studying the climate on other planets, particularly those outside our solar system or exoplanets in order to determine their potential for hosting life, it also provides an insight into what Earth may look like in the centuries to come.

The researchers noted that a small amount of greenhouse effect is necessary to keep the Earth’s average temperature below the freezing point of water, without which it would turn into an ice-covered ball hostile to life.

However, too much of it increases the rate of evaporation of oceans which also raises the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere and traps heat like a rescue blanket.

“There is a critical threshold for this amount of water vapor, beyond which the planet cannot cool down anymore,” said Guillaume Chaverot, former postdoctoral scholar at UNIGE and main author of the study, in a statement.&nbsp;

“From there, everything gets carried away until the oceans end up getting fully evaporated and the temperature reaches several hundred degrees,” Chaverot added.&nbsp;

It will be 'hell': Earth might turn into Venus some day, greenhouse effect simulation shows

Chum salmon, a species of anadromous salmonid fish, have found a new location to spawn—the Arctic waters, and the scientists are alarmed.

Chum salmon are said to be anadromous, which means they hatch in freshwater streams and rivers and then migrate out to the saltwater environment of the ocean to feed and grow.

They do not reside in fresh water for an extended period.

However, scientists have recently discovered that these migrating fish have been spawning in uncharted waters.

They believe that due to unprecedented warming of the waters, an after-effect of climate change, the Arctic is becoming conducive for them to breed in large numbers.

<h2>Arctic waters warming at a faster rate&nbsp;</h2>

According to ‘Nature’ journal, the Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet. Scientists say that this could explain the presence of chum salmon farther north.

“What seems to be happening is that these Arctic rivers are just now starting to become suitable,” Peter Westley, an ecologist at the University of Alaska, to Wired outlet.

However, these biologists are yet to figure out how increased salmon counts in far northern rivers will impact other species relied upon by locals in the region.

One plausible reason being given is that salmon lay a bunch of eggs, and then die, as part of their life cycle, and it might provide food for other species.

<h2>Presence signals overall ecological change&nbsp;</h2>

But they have also warned that migration their presence signals an overall ecological change, including melting ice, and more green growth, among others.

One concern deals with all the extra water created by ice melt. Wired reported that experts are concerned new flows will degrade the soil, mixing aboveground water with underground springs.

More vegetation — even taller shrubs — can have implications. They can trap snow on the soil, insulating the ground, and preventing it from freezing.

“That could accelerate the thawing of permafrost, which in turn would release planet-heating methane,” Wired reported.

Researchers are now placing sensors in the Arctic to measure water temperature, as it can help them determine if the waters are hospitable to an expanded salmon presence.

In a seismic moment at the turn of the millennium, Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen introduced the term "Anthropocene" to characterise a new geological era shaped by human activities. Fast forward to 2023, and the Anthropocene is no longer a theoretical concept but an urgent reality as global leaders grapple with the ramifications of industrialisation on a planetary scale.

Crutzen's initial proposition in 2000 outlined planetary symptoms such as deforestation, rampant dam construction, overfishing, and disruptions to the nitrogen cycle.

Climate change, while acknowledged, was seen as a distant concern. However, the trajectory has taken a dramatic turn, with nine consecutive years marking record-breaking temperatures by 2022 and 38 instances where global temperatures exceeded the UN's safe warming limit of 1.5°C by September 2023.

Research shows that the sudden disruption to our climate will last for at least 50,000 years, maybe even longer.&nbsp;

Climate change we instigated is here to stay for at least 50,000 years: Study

Climate change is real this is a statement we have heard over the years but a byproduct stemming from these conversations is of climate anxiety. The climate 'tipping point report' has some major revelations. Tune in to know more.

Climate 'Tipping Point': World is at a pivotal point, govt should act now to save planet

Over the years scientists have cautioned about the dire climate situation the Earth is facing. While the world governments are struggling to hammer out a common deal to reach net zero emissions, a report has issued a ‘Doomsday’ warning about the major climate “tipping points” that could bring catastrophe worldwide in the next 10 years if the planet continues to heat up.

According to a report compiled by more than 200 scientists, global warming has reached unprecedented levels and it could trigger a “dangerous domino effect” that could potentially wipe out the livelihood of human beings.

The report titled ‘Global Tipping Points’ states that five important natural thresholds are already at risk of being crossed, and three more may be reached in the 2030s if the world heats 1.5C (2.7F) above pre-industrial temperatures.

“Triggering one tipping point could trigger another in a kind of dangerous domino effect,” says Tim Lenton,&nbsp;the lead author of the report, as per NewScientists outlet.

“But also these tipping points in the Earth system could, in turn, trigger damaging tipping points in societies, things like food security crises, mass displacement and conflicts. Stopping these threats is possible, but it’s going to require urgent global action.”

<h2>'Could bring irreversible changes'</h2>

A tipping point is a situation where a small aberration in the ecosystem could trigger abrupt and irreversible changes, because of amplifying feedback processes.

The five major tipping points that we are near to crossing are: the loss of the Greenland ice sheet, the demise of the West Antarctic ice sheet, the die-off of tropical coral reefs, the abrupt thaw of large areas of Arctic permafrost and the slowing of an ocean current known as the North Atlantic subpolar gyre.

The report states that there are more that may soon join the list. They are: mangroves and seagrass meadows&nbsp;which are expected to die off in some regions if the temperatures rise between 1.5C and 2C, and boreal forests, which may tip as early as 1.4C of heating or as late as 5C.

The warning comes as world leaders are in Dubai for the COP28 climate summit.

"The extraordinary global November temperatures, including two days warmer than 2C above pre-industrial (levels), mean that 2023 is the warmest year in recorded history," Samantha Burgess, deputy head of the Copernicus service said.

Scientists say data from ice cores, tree rings and the like suggests this year could be the warmest in more than 100,000 years.

Earth on verge of crossing major ‘tipping points’, might trigger climate catastrophe in 10 years: Report

While world leaders from nearly 200 countries are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/cop28-summit-could-the-world-agree-to-ditch-fossil-fuels-at-cop28-664131">debating</a>&nbsp;the course of action <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/over-46-million-health-professionals-ask-cop28-president-to-ditch-fossil-fuels-653674">on fossil fuels</a> at the United Nations <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cop28-summit-kicks-off-with-breakthrough-climate-disaster-fund-agreement-664840">climate summit COP28</a> in Dubai, a team of scientists, on Tuesday (Dec 5) released a report saying that global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are set to hit a record high in 2023.&nbsp;

The fate of oil, gas and coal – the burning of which leads to emissions of planet-warming gases – hangs in balance as the issue has become a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/un-chief-cop-28-president-clash-over-future-of-fossil-fuels-665322">point of contention</a> at the climate summit which is currently being hosted by oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE).&nbsp;

Emirati President of COP28 Sultan Al Jaber, who is also head of UAE national oil company ADNOC recently landed in hot water over his remarks about fossil fuels and their contribution to&nbsp;global warming.&nbsp;

A report by the Guardian said that he claimed there is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cop28-presidents-no-science-behind-oil-phase-out-statement-causes-alarm-666064">“no science”</a> indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels is needed to restrict global heating to 1.5 degree Celsius threshold.

<h2>COP28 drafts over fossil fuels</h2>

On Tuesday (Dec 5), the UN released the latest draft of a global climate agreement which presented three options to tackle fossil fuels which ranged from phasing them out to not talking about it at all.&nbsp;

The latest draft is the second version of the negotiating document and sets the stage for the possible outcomes of the talks where nearly 200 nations will try to reach a consensus on a plan to take measures to curb the rising global temperatures.&nbsp;

The first option in the 24-page draft is “an orderly and just phase out of fossil fuels,” the toughest stance and seen as essential for low-lying island nations that are at risk from rising sea levels.&nbsp;

The second called for “accelerating efforts towards phasing out unabated fossil fuels,” which includes steps like phase-out of projects that lack the means to capture and store emissions and call for “rapid” reduction of fossil fuel use to achieve carbon neutrality in global energy production by 2050.&nbsp;

The third option would be no mention of a fossil fuel phase-out, a position reportedly supported by oil giant&nbsp;Saudi Arabia and China. On the other hand, the United States, the European Union’s 27 nations, and climate-vulnerable small island states are pushing for a fossil fuel phase-out.&nbsp;

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman told Bloomberg that Riyadh – the world’s biggest oil exporter – would not agree to a “phasedown/out” of fossil fuels.

“Absolutely not,” he told the American media in Riyadh, adding, “I assure you not a single person – I’m talking about governments – believes in that.”

Notably, a previous draft of the document had only mentioned the options of a “phase-out” or a weaker “phase-down”. A phase-out would help reduce carbon dioxide emissions which scientists say are needed to avert the disastrous impact of climate change.&nbsp;

The second draft also included the option of a “rapid phase-out of unabated coal power this decade” and an immediate halt to building new carbon dioxide-emitting coal power plants.

An “unabated” power plant refers to one that does not capture the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions before they hit the atmosphere.&nbsp;

There is a high chance that the 200 countries may not reach a consensus at the climate summit which is being held during what is widely expected to be the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/un-chief-antonio-guterres-sounds-alarm-in-dubai-says-2023-set-to-be-hottest-year-in-human-history-664688">hottest year on record</a>. &nbsp;

UAE is also choking under “alarmingly high” air pollution levels due to its fossil fuel industry, said Human Rights Watch, on Monday (Dec 4).&nbsp;

<h2>Global carbon emissions hit record-high</h2>

Global carbon emissions from fossil fuels have risen to yet another record high this year, according to the Global Carbon Budget report, published on Tuesday (Dec 5) amid the ongoing UN climate summit.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/indias-per-capita-emissions-less-than-half-of-global-average-report-says-666469">emissions</a>, according to a report compiled by scientists from more than 90 institutions, will exacerbate climate change and fuel more destructive extreme weather events.&nbsp;

The overall carbon dioxide emissions reached a record high last year, and have plateaued in 2023 due to a slight drop from uses of land like deforestation, the report noted.&nbsp;

In 2023, the countries are reportedly expected to emit a total of 36.8 billion metric tons of planet-warming gas due to fossil fuels which is a 1.1 per cent increase from last year.&nbsp;

According to the report, emissions from burning coal, oil and gas all rose in 2023 and were driven by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/cop28-india-china-abstain-from-renewable-power-pledge-118-nations-sign-665671">China and India</a>. The emissions will also prove to be a setback in preventing global warming exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, said researchers.

“It now looks inevitable we will overshoot the 1.5C target of the Paris Agreement,” said University of Exeter’s Professor Pierre Friedlingstein, who led the research, as quoted by Reuters.

“Leaders meeting at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-will-india-overcome-climate-challenges-and-spearhead-change-at-cop28-664493">COP28</a> will have to agree rapid cuts in fossil fuel emissions even to keep the 2C target alive,” he added.&nbsp;

On the bright side, countries which have historically contributed most to global carbon dioxide emissions, and continue to be large contributors today, like the US and EU have managed to reduce their emissions partly due to coal plants being retired, said the report.

<h2>Record number of fossil fuel lobbyists at COP28</h2>

A record number of oil and gas lobbyists have reportedly been accredited at the COP28 which given its host country is unsurprising, and UAE has made no secret of its plan to include its fossil fuel interests in the climate conference either.&nbsp;

A bombshell report by BBC last week claimed that UAE’s COP28 team was preparing to hold meetings with governments of over a dozen nations, with intentions of utilising the climate summit as an opportunity to strike oil and gas deals with them.

At least 2,456 people tied to fossil fuel interests registered for this year’s summit, reported Kick Big Polluters Out (KBPO), an international coalition of climate activist groups citing UN registration data.&nbsp;

If taken as a group they outnumber “every country delegation” apart from Brazil and the UAE, said the coalition of groups, in a statement. Additionally, the fossil fuel lobbyists also outnumbered the 1,609 delegates from the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries combined.&nbsp;

<h2>COP28 president’s faux pas</h2>

The Guardian has published a video which showed a heated exchange between Al Jaber and former Irish leader Mary Robinson during an online forum when the COP28 president said, “I’m not in any way signing up to a discussion that is alarmist”.&nbsp;

He added, “I am factual and I respect the science, and there is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuels is what's going to achieve 1.5C.” &nbsp;

The remark sparked a major global backlash and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/cop28-presidents-fossil-fuel-claim-causes-outcry-666082">outcry</a> prompting the UAE leader to do some <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/uae-leader-holds-damage-control-conference-after-making-no-science-fossil-claim-666253">damage control</a>.&nbsp;

“I respect the science in everything I do. I have repeatedly said that it is the science that has guided the principles or strategy as COP28 president,” Al Jaber said during a press conference on Monday (Dec 4).&nbsp;

He also complained how “one statement taken out of context with misrepresentation” had received “maximum coverage”.

While world leaders from nearly 200 countries are debating the course of action on fossil fuels at the United Nations climate summit COP28 in Dubai, a team of scientists, on Tuesday (Dec 5) released a report saying that global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are set to hit a record high in 2023. The fate of oil, gas and coal – the burning of which leads to emissions of planet-warming gases – hangs in balance as the issue has become a point of contention at the climate summit which is currently being hosted by oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE). Emirati President of COP28 Sultan Al Jaber, who is also head of UAE national oil company ADNOC recently landed in hot water over his remarks about fossil fuels and their contribution to global warming. A report by the Guardian said that he claimed there is “no science” indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels is needed to restrict global heating to 1.5 degree Celsius threshold. COP28 drafts over fossil fuels On Tuesday (Dec 5), the UN released the latest draft of a global climate agreement which presented three options to tackle fossil fuels which ranged from phasing them out to not talking about it at all. The latest draft is the second version of the negotiating document and sets the stage for the possible outcomes of the talks where nearly 200 nations will try to reach a consensus on a plan to take measures to curb the rising global temperatures. The first option in the 24-page draft is “an orderly and just phase out of fossil fuels,” the toughest stance and seen as essential for low-lying island nations that are at risk from rising sea levels. The second called for “accelerating efforts towards phasing out unabated fossil fuels,” which includes steps like phase-out of projects that lack the means to capture and store emissions and call for “rapid” reduction of fossil fuel use to achieve carbon neutrality in global energy production by 2050. The third option would be no mention of a fossil fuel phase-out, a position reportedly supported by oil giant Saudi Arabia and China. On the other hand, the United States, the European Union’s 27 nations, and climate-vulnerable small island states are pushing for a fossil fuel phase-out. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman told Bloomberg that Riyadh – the world’s biggest oil exporter – would not agree to a “phasedown/out” of fossil fuels. “Absolutely not,” he told the American media in Riyadh, adding, “I assure you not a single person – I’m talking about governments – believes in that.” Notably, a previous draft of the document had only mentioned the options of a “phase-out” or a weaker “phase-down”. A phase-out would help reduce carbon dioxide emissions which scientists say are needed to avert the disastrous impact of climate change. The second draft also included the option of a “rapid phase-out of unabated coal power this decade” and an immediate halt to building new carbon dioxide-emitting coal power plants. An “unabated” power plant refers to one that does not capture the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions before they hit the atmosphere. There is a high chance that the 200 countries may not reach a consensus at the climate summit which is being held during what is widely expected to be the hottest year on record. UAE is also choking under “alarmingly high” air pollution levels due to its fossil fuel industry, said Human Rights Watch, on Monday (Dec 4). As global warming and prohibitive costs threaten the long-term future of the Winter Olympics, organisers know they must soften their demands in order to retain a pool of potential hosts for the decades to come. On the face of it, there's no immediate concern, as the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday selected France ahead of two other contenders -- Sweden and Switzerland -- to enter into "targeted dialogue" over staging the 2030 Winter Games.&nbsp; It is a coup for France, which will also host the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.

President Emmanuel Macron hailed the bid focused on the snowy Alps region as "innovative, sustainable and inclusive" and said it would make "France and its mountains shine". The IOC will begin detailed discussions with French representatives before the event is officially awarded next year.&nbsp;

The three hosts in the running were an increase on the two vying for the 2022 Winter Olympics, when Beijing received the nod over Almaty in Kazakhstan. The Chinese campaign was marked by enormous investment, the exclusive use of artificial snow and widespread environmental concerns and human rights criticism.

Only two candidates bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics as well, with Milan-Cortina picked ahead of Stockholm. While Sweden made a push for 2030, with Stockholm and the Are ski resort, some 600km (370 miles) away from the capital, planned as venues, France and Switzerland waited until this summer to enter the fray, keeping their plans closely guarded, free of political debate and without consulting the public.

<h2>Flurry of withdrawals&nbsp;</h2>

Those initially viewed as favourites pulled out, with Salt Lake City choosing to focus on 2034. On Wednesday, the US city, which last hosted the Winter Games in 2002, was confirmed as the sole candidate. A potential Pyrenees-Barcelona bid was scrapped, as was that of Sapporo in Japan, put off by the exorbitant costs.

It highlights a recent trend that afflicts the Winter Games far more than its summer counterpart, with Calgary, Santiago, Auckland, Innsbruck, St Moritz, Sion, Oslo and Lviv forming a cascade of abandoned bids, often lacking in popular support.

On top of the less significant economic benefits to those of a Summer Olympics, the winter showpiece requires infrastructure that is both expensive to build and maintain -- even more so when it serves little other purpose to the local community.

Ski jumps, sliding tracks for the luge and bobsleigh events, and indoor speed skating rinks are the most likely to become "white elephants". The issue of snow cover is unavoidable too. Despite the access to snow cannons, they can only operate when it is cold enough, and even then the events must remain fair. Rain fell on the slopes at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, while mild conditions ate away at the snow at Sochi in Russia four years later.&nbsp;

<h2>Ten potential hosts?&nbsp;</h2>

The warming of the planet is highly likely to further reduce the places capable of guaranteeing suitable conditions for a Winter Games. According to a study published by the IOC last month, only 10 countries will still be in a position to host the Winter Olympics and Paralympics by 2040, down from 15 now, with Europe particularly affected.

Olympic authorities did not venture to look further down the line, but a study from Canada's University of Waterloo estimated that of the 21 previous Winter Games hosts, only eight would remain "climate reliable" in 2080 if global emissions of greenhouse gases are not significantly slashed. These fears have led to a series of adaptations envisaged by the IOC, including the "double allocation" of the 2030 and 2034 Games to secure sites as early as possible, cost-reducing measures to bring the Games more in line with various world championships, and a possible rotation between a handful of hosts which have pre-existing facilities.

In keeping with the Summer Olympics, it's rapidly becoming a question of avoiding new construction, allowing cities to associate themselves with a bid regardless of distance, or even if they're in a different country. For example, Austria or Switzerland is expected to stage the luge and bobsleigh events for Milan-Cortina -- already one of the most scattered Olympics -- while each of the 2030 bids also involved considerable travelling.

The principle that "the Olympic Games now adapt to the regions and not the other way around" has been in place for years, but the truth of that will be seriously put to the test as organisers seek a sustainable model for the future.

As global warming and prohibitive costs threaten the long-term future of the Winter Olympics, organisers know they must soften their demands in order to retain a pool of potential hosts for the decades to come.

A new study has found that extreme heat may have caused 70,000 excess deaths in Europe in 2022. The scientists at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) revised their earlier estimate of 61,000 after making changes to their framework for measuring heat-related mortality.

The researchers said the previous framework took into account the weekly data but now they were relying on daily data.

The new framework is based on daily temperatures and mortality records from 147 regions in 16 European countries.

According to Copernicus, the EU’s earth observation programme, the year 2022 saw Europe witness the second-hottest year on record, with temperature around 0.9C above average and summer temperature at 1.4C above average.

Earlier, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Copernicus said in a joint statement that Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent, warming twice as much as the global average since the 1980s.

Earlier, researchers at ISGlobal and Inserm said in July that Europe could see as many as 68,000 heat-related excess deaths each year by 2030.

By 2040, the figure could further swell to 94,000, unless global governments take radical steps to check the carbon emissions.

Global warming set to reach way beyond goal set by Paris agreement | World News | WION

The greenhouse gas reduction pledges adopted by the countries are insufficient to attain the pre-industrial level global temperatures, the United Nations said in its report on Monday (Nov 19).

The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) annual Emissions Gap report said that based on existing policies and emissions-cutting efforts, the planet’s temperature could still go up to a catastrophic 2.9 degrees Celsius by 2100.

The report, which was released just ahead of crucial COP28 climate talks, warns that nations' decarbonisation plans would still see the planet heat between 2.5C and 2.9C by this century.

It also noted that 2023 would be the hottest in human history, adding that “the world is witnessing a disturbing acceleration in the number, speed and scale of broken climate records”.

“Due to the failure to stringently reduce emissions in high-income and high-emitting countries (which bear the greatest responsibility for past emissions) and to limit emissions growth in low- and middle-income countries (which account for the majority of current emissions), unprecedented action is now needed by all countries,” the report said.

<h2>World continues to pump record levels of emissions&nbsp;</h2>

It said that the world continues to pump record levels of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, with emissions up 1.2 per cent from 2021 to 2022, thanks to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes.

UNEP chief Inger Andersen urged the G20 nations – the world’s wealthiest economies responsible for around 80 per cent of emissions –to lead on reductions, but noted some were in “snooze mode”.

“It is absolutely critical that the G-20 step up,” she said, according to AFP news agency.

The UNEP report stated that the Paris Agreement goals can still be fulfilled if countries adopt strong mitigation measures this decade to narrow the emissions gap.

<h2>Silver lining&nbsp;</h2>

Under the 2015 deal, countries had agreed to limit global warming at “well below” 2 degrees C above pre-industrial times – with a safer limit of 1.5 degrees C if possible.

However till this year, countries have already emitted nearly 1.2 degrees C of global heating, the impact of which could be seen across the planet, the report said.

UNEP said temperatures have gone above 1.5 degrees C for more than 80 days already in 2023, although the Paris warming thresholds will be measured as an average over several decades.

However, the UNEP chief expressed optimism in making progress in the upcoming COP28 summit on Nov 30 in Dubai, despite the fissures caused by the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas conflicts.

“Countries and delegations understand that irrespective of these deep divisions that do exist and that are undeniable, the environment doesn’t wait and climate most certainly will not,” she said.

World continues to pump record levels of emissions It said that the world continues to pump record levels of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, with emissions up 1.2 per cent from 2021 to 2022, thanks to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes. Silver lining Under the 2015 deal, countries had agreed to limit global warming at “well below” 2 degrees C above pre-industrial times – with a safer limit of 1.5 degrees C if possible.
