Studies on how climate change affects mating patterns of animals have been coming out in the recent past. Now, a new analysis has posited that certain insects may be facing difficulty in finding mates because sexual behaviour is connected to their body colour, which in turn is often affected by atmospheric temperatures.

One insect in question is the ambush bug. Darker male ambush bugs warm up more easily on cold mornings. That will help them get sexual partners faster than their brighter counterparts.

A review article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution pointed out how sexual selection is affected by colour patterns in male ambush bug.

As per the study, the male insect changes colour to dark based on heat in the atmosphere. It is a crucial aspect for mating, as darker males attract more females.

What has global warming got to do with any of this?

The multitude of colours we see on insects is partly a result of pigmentation, which is aided by temperature.

The colouring of their bodies help insects in several ways, from camouflage to attracting mating partners.

Insect colours and sexual signalling

Colours on insects is a method of communication too. Besides sexual signalling, the colours also act as protection from predators.

How are insect colours linked to climate crisis?

The expression of insect colours in terms of quantity and quality can be impacted by environmental factors including temperature, rainfall, and solar radiation, noted the study. Temperature directly affects pigment production.
Insects in colder environments tend to be darker, as melanin production is greater.

"The selective advantage of this response to environmental temperature is that darker bodies can absorb more solar radiation than lighter bodies, allowing darker individuals to remain active for longer periods in colder regions, which may increase reproductive success and feeding rates," said the study, citing earlier research.

Climate crisis may be costing some insects their sex lives, suggests study. Here is how

Beryl on Monday (Jul 8) brought to Texas howling winds and torrential rains that killed at least three people and left 2.7 million houses without power. Along with this, the tropical storm caused extensive flooding on highways, delayed more than 1,300 flights and caused the closure of schools and major oil ports.

The season's earliest category 5 hurricane on record, Beryl, has weakened to a tropical storm after hitting the coastal Texas town of Matagorda with all the might of a Category 1 hurricane.

What is a Category 1 hurricane?

A hurricane, as per the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is considered a Category 1 if it sustains winds between 74 (119 km/h) and 95 miles per hour (152.89 km/h).

While Category 1 hurricanes are not considered "major hurricanes" until they reach Category 3, they are still very dangerous and can bring with them widespread destruction.

Beryl's devastation

In Texas, Beryl claimed the lives of three. As per the news agency Reuters, a 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were killed in two separate incidents in the Houston area when trees fell on their homes.

A third individual, a City of Houston employee, drowned in an underpass while travelling to work.

Previously, in Mexico and the Caribbean, the storm killed 11 people, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick told reporters.

"For those of you in northeast Texas, be aware. You will have tropical storm winds, maybe as late as midnight or 1 am. You will have flooding, you will have rain, and you need to stay off the roads," he warned.

While state officials are yet to assess the damage wrought by storm Beryl, Mayor John Whitmire told reporters that due to the hurricane, floodwaters across most of Houston have exceeded 10 inches (25.4 centimetres).

"We're literally getting calls across Houston right now asking for first responders to come rescue individuals in desperate life safety conditions," he said.

Furthermore, more than 1,300 flights were cancelled, as officials ordered evacuations in some beach towns.

With the whole of India facing one of the worst heatwaves, Jammu and Kashmir has been no different. The direct impact of the heatwave has been on the glaciers in the Himalayan region. According to data, there are around eighteen thousand glaciers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and all of them are melting rapidly as the heatwave continues in the region.

The heatwave and increase in normal temperatures over the years have led to massive melting of the glaciers in the region. The biggest glacier in the Kashmir Valley is Kolahoi Glacier, and experts say that it has lost around 23 per cent of its mass in the last few decades due to the rise in temperatures and below-normal precipitation in winter.

''It is a major concern. The melting of glaciers if you look at Indian Himalayan glaciers, it's already under the adverse effect of climate change. We are seeing most of the himalayan glaciers melting. They were because of the impact of the increase in the temperatures, and the outcome of the climate change," said Shakil Romshoo, VC, Islamic University Science and Technology.

"Now recently what we have seen is the heatwave is becoming an annual issue, every year we are witnessing the heat waves in south Asia. If we look at mainland India and Pakistan the temperatures have touched above 50 degrees. This has a big impact on the glaciers. We have been monitoring the change and melting in the last five years in terms of the length, breadth and thickness of the glaciers. This is a major concern as we call it the water tower of Asia."

"800 million people are dependent on this for drinking water, agriculture, horticulture, power generation, and every sector of the economy. We have said that going by this rate, 70 per cent of the glaciers if the current trend of climate change continues, will vanish by the end of this century," he added.

Horticulture and Agriculture are the major contributors to the GDP of Jammu and Kashmir. Most of the valley's agriculture and horticulture land depends on the melting of snow on higher reaches which fills up the streams and rivers. Data has revealed that Kashmir Valley has lost over 30,000 hectares of agricultural land in ten years.

''It may not impact the water availability in a day or months, but it will happen slowly. The change in winter precipitation has been below normal. The winter precipitation replenishes the water bodies, and this is not happening due to less precipitation. Autumn is the most hit as the water hits the lowest. We normally used to stay around 5-6 feet and now the same water level remains below zero. The water shortage is already in Srinagar and many other parts of the valley due to it, '' said Faizan Arif, weather analyst and forecaster.

The erratic melting of these glaciers in the higher reaches will also impact the power generation in these areas. Experts believe the water scarcity in the region could have an adverse impact on the hydroelectric power projects. The power projects in Jammu and Kashmir are the main source of electricity for the whole of northern India.

Over the last month, the country experienced severe heat waves. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a heat wave is "a period of unusually high temperatures as compared to what is normally expected over a region."

According to the recent weather report by IMD, the heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over parts of Uttar Pradesh. Although there is a slight respite due to the advancing monsoon in many parts of the country. The maximum temperatures are not likely to change soon.

The world experienced an average of 26 more days of extreme heat over the last 12 months. A report says it would probably not have occurred without climate change.

Finland has been experiencing unusually warm weather this May, prompting the Meteorological Institute to issue a heat warning on Monday.

Temperatures across large parts of the Nordic nation, the north of which lies above the Arctic Circle, are due to surge above 27C (81 F) starting on Tuesday (May 28), the institute said.

"This is probably the first time ever we have issued a heatwave warning in May", Iiris Viljamaa from the Finnish Meteorological Institute told AFP, adding that such alerts were normally issued in June at the earliest.

Scientists say that recurring heatwaves are a clear marker of global warming and that these heatwaves are set to become more frequent, longer and more intense.

"The Finnish climate has always seen changes in weather but now climate change is enhancing these kinds of weather phenomena," meteorologist Leena Laakso told AFP.

Research shows "extreme weather events will increase due to climate change," she said.

According to Laakso, the current temperatures were around 10C above average temperatures for May.

The Finnish warning is aimed at alerting people about increased health risks associated with daytime temperatures reaching 27C.

Especially the elderly, people with long-term illnesses and disabilities, babies and young children are advised to take shelter from the heat, the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare said in a statement.

"In Finland we are used to cool weather and people start to have some health issues in this kind of weather already", said Viljamaa.

On Monday, temperatures between 24 and 28C were recorded, due to a high pressure system over the country, combined with a warm, dry air mass flowing from the south.

Twelve days in May had already exceeded 25 degrees, Viljamaa said.

The town of Salo in southwestern Finland on Saturday registered the country's highest temperature of the year so far, at 28.8C.

Recent years have seen major oil companies making big climate pledges. However, a new report from Oil Change International suggests these are nothing but empty promises.

The report examined climate plans from the eight largest US and European-based oil and gas producers and found that none of them were in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Which companies did the report evaluate?

BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies are the companies.

For its report, Oil Change International assessed the companies' plans on 10 criteria. It found that all eight big oil companies ranked as "grossly insufficient" or "insufficient" on nearly all criteria, reports The Guardian.

US firms Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil were the "worst of the worst" and ranked "grossly insufficient" on all 10 of the criteria.

In a statement, Allie Rosenbluth, US programme manager at Oil Change International, said, "American fossil-fuel corporations are the worst of the worst."

The report has been endorsed by over 100 climate groups internationally and marks the fourth annual "Big Oil Reality Check" from Oil Change International.

Increasing global warming

In a statement, David Tong, co-author of the analysis, and global industry campaign manager at Oil Change International, said: "There is no evidence that big oil and gas companies are acting seriously to be part of the energy transition."

What more? The report also found that instead of limiting global warming, these companies' current oil and gas extraction plans could actually lead to more than 2.4°C of global temperature rise.

As per the report, the eight oil companies alone are on track to use 30 per cent of the world's remaining global carbon budget — to keep the global average temperature rise to 1.5C.

The report criticised the companies for their lack of ambition to curb fossil fuel exploration and production. None have plans to stop fossil fuel exploration or halt new extraction projects. In fact, six of the eight companies have explicit goals to increase oil and gas production.

Additionally, the report found that the companies' methods to curb greenhouse gas emissions lack integrity. None set comprehensive targets to rapidly and consistently curb emissions, and all plan to rely on methods like carbon capture and storage, which do not yet exist at scale, and carbon offsetting.

All eight firms also failed to "meet basic criteria for just transition plans for workers and communities where they operate," and none met "basic" human rights criteria.

Rising sea levels threaten Thailand's capital, Bangkok, with relocation, according to a senior official from the country's climate change office.

The low-lying Bangkok risks being submersed by the ocean before the end of the century, according to the projections. The bustling capital already battles flooding during the rainy season.

The city might not be able to adapt with the world on its current warming pathway, warned Pavich Kesavawong, deputy director-general of the government's department of climate change and environment.

"Now we have to think about adaptation. I suppose Bangkok will be under water, if we stay in our (current) circumstance," he further said.

Bangkok is considering building sea walls, similar to those in the Netherlands, to combat rising waters. However, relocation of the city is also being discussed, according to a government official.

Kesavawong emphasised that these talks are still in the early stages and that moving the capital would be a very complex undertaking.

"Personally I think it's a good choice, so we can separate the capital, the government areas, and business areas," he added.

"Bangkok would still be the government capital, but will move the business,” Kesavawong further said.

Indonesia is another country facing a similar situation. It will inaugurate its new capital Nusantara this year, which will replace sinking Jakarta as the country's political centre.

Thailand is suffering the effects of climate change as farmers struggle with high temperature and drought, while tourism is affected by coral bleaching and pollution.

It has closed several national parks in response to recent coral bleaching while further closures are possible.

Despite government efforts, including new clean air legislation and increased fire prevention measures in national parks, air pollution, especially in northern Thailand, remains a significant challenge.

"The agriculture sector is very challenging for us," Pavich said, referring to continued post-harvest burning that is a major contributor to seasonal haze.

Climate Change can threaten our homes but as per a new research, extreme weather can also harm our brain health, making disorders like anxiety and depression worse.

Researchers from University College London, as per a study published in Lancet Neurology, have found a concerning link between environmental changes and neurological health.

What is the correlation?

Researchers analysed the impact of extreme weather on 19 nervous system conditions, including stroke, Alzheimer’s, meningitis, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. They also looked at psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

They discovered that there was a "clear evidence for an impact of the climate on some brain conditions, especially stroke and infections of the nervous system".

"The climatic variation that was shown to have an effect on brain diseases included extremes of temperature, both low and high, and greater temperature variation throughout the course of day, especially when these measures were seasonally unusual," said Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, director of genomics at University College London's epilepsy society.

He said that nighttime temperatures mean hotter nights, which can disrupt sleep. This is "particularly important" as hotter temperature and heatwaves mean billions of people globally are sleeping through higher than normal temperatures.

They also observed an increase in hospital admissions, disability, and stroke due to higher temperatures or heatwaves.

The conservationists are sounding the alarm about their expansion across the country from their original habitat in the Gulf of Mexico basin.

'These fishes are going to be one of the apex predators around every system once they establish those populations,' said biologist Joel Fleming.

The catfish that lays around 10,000 eggs at a time, was once restricted to the rivers of the south, but now has spread across the country. This expansion is attributed to two factors, intentional introduction into new waterways and the fish's natural tendency to move from crowded habitats.

The flathead catfish were detected in California in 1962, Virginia in 1965 and the Potomac in DC in 2003.
Notably, they get heavier the longer they are established with a 66lb example breaking the state record in Pennsylvania in June last year.

According to scientists, global warning has contributed to their stretch which has now reached the Thames River in southern Ontario.

Scientists are concerned that flathead catfish may have formed a self-sustaining population within the river. This is particularly concerning as the river already supports 25 fish and mussel species classified as at-risk.

According to biology professor Nicholas Mandrak of the University of Toronto who is an expert in invasive fish species, “Any one fish is going to be eating kilograms and kilograms of fish every day.”

“I think that very likely climate change is part of it,” he told CBC and added, “As our waters warm, they become a more appropriate temperature for these southern catfishes to survive in Canada.”

Mandrake further said, “They get very large and they eat a lot of fishes, so they're likely to have a substantial negative impact if we do not do anything to control their populations.”

Reducing aerosol emissions can have a cooling effect on Earth's climate. Aerosols are tiny particles suspended in the atmosphere, often released through human activities like burning fossil fuels and biomass, industrial processes, and natural events like volcanic eruptions. While aerosols can contribute to air pollution and have negative health effects, they also play a role in the Earth's climate system.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Ocean University of China has put a spotlight on a concerning phenomenon - the exacerbation of global warming due to China's efforts to reduce aerosol emissions. These efforts, aimed at curbing air pollution, have unintentionally led to the formation of 'heat blobs' over the northeast Pacific region from 2010 to 2020.

The research team observed a major rise in temperatures, up to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, stretching from the Bering Strait across 1,000 miles to the Gulf of Alaska. This surge in temperature has had profound ecological repercussions, including fish die-offs, the mysterious disappearance of whales, and toxic algae blooms.

The study underscored the necessity for the Chinese government to reconsider its aerosol reduction policies, as the absence of these particles is predicted to further escalate temperatures in the northeast Pacific region.

Researchers simulate conditions

The researchers employed computer climate models to simulate two scenarios - one where East Asian emissions remained stable and another reflecting the reduction in aerosol levels over the past decade. The models revealed that while stable emissions did not significantly alter temperatures in other regions, reduced aerosol levels led to intensified heat waves in the northeast Pacific.

The mechanism behind this phenomenon lies in the diminished reflection of heat into space due to cleaner air. Rising temperatures trigger the formation of high-pressure systems, resulting in hotter, drier summers and milder winters. This atmospheric shift exacerbates low-pressure systems in the Pacific, amplifying the impact on regional climate patterns. The ramifications also include the devastating California drought from 2013 to 2016.

China's aerosol reduction measures warming Pacific region, finds study

In continuation of a damning 11-month trend, last month (April) was once again the hottest April on record. Every month for the past 11 months, the world has set a new temperature record.

On Wednesday (May 8), the European Union's climate change monitoring service in its monthly bulletin said that each month since June 2023 has ranked as the planet's hottest on record. This is in comparison to the months in previous years.

Highest on record

As per the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), including April, Earth's average temperature was the highest on record for a 12-month period.

By how much? 1.61 degrees Celsius above the average in the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period.

The dataset maintained by C3S contains historical information dating back to as early as 1940. To validate their findings, scientists also compared this record with other available data and established that last month was the hottest April on record, surpassing any previous April temperatures during the pre-industrial period.

What is behind this rise in temperatures?

Greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels have been identified as the main culprit behind climate change.

Recent months also saw El Niño, a natural phenomenon which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, raising temperatures.

The extremes, including months of record-breaking sea surface temperatures, have led scientists to question whether human activities have now triggered a tipping point in the planet's climate system.

"I think many scientists have asked the question whether there could be a shift in the climate system," said Julien Nicolas, C3S Senior Climate Scientist as quoted by AFP.

Already, scientists have confirmed that climate change was behind some specific weather extremes last month. This includes the heatwave in the Sahel that has potential links to thousands of deaths.

Experts warn that the Earth is perilously close to breaching the 1.5 degree Celsius target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Hayley Fowler, a climate scientist at Newcastle University, told AFP that she thinks "we have already lost the battle".

"At what point do we declare we've lost the battle to keep temperatures below 1.5? My personal opinion is we've already lost that battle, and we really need to think very seriously about keeping below 2C and reducing our emissions as fast as we can," she said.

Technically, the world is yet to breach the 1.5C target as it refers to the average global temperature over decades. However, some scientists warn that meeting the target is no longer realistic.
