Private jet travel, once reserved for a select few, has become more common in recent years.

With the rise of fractional ownership programs, charter services, and increased wealth among the ultra-rich, private jets now operate thousands of flights daily.

This surge in usage has brought the debate around their environmental impact into sharper focus.

COP29: Summit Raises Climate Finance To $300 Billion A Year, Nations Left Disappointed | WION

Pacific leaders at the UN climate summit in Azerbaijan are criticising Australia's push to expand its gas industry in Western Australia, warning it could emit 125 times more greenhouse gases annually than their nations combined. &nbsp;

As the second week of Cop29 unfolds in Baku, officials from Vanuatu and Tuvalu urged Australia to halt new fossil fuel developments, including extending the lifespan of Woodside's North West Shelf gas facility to 2070. &nbsp;

<h2>A call for accountability &nbsp;</h2>

Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu's special envoy for climate change, accused Australia of hypocrisy, saying it cannot claim climate leadership while expanding fossil fuel projects. &nbsp;

"As the world’s third largest fossil fuel exporter, the Australian government is exporting climate destruction overseas, including to Pacific nations like Vanuatu, who experience the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis, despite contributing the least."

"This is climate injustice," he stated.&nbsp;

Regenvanu pressed Australia to uphold its commitment from last year's Cop28 in Dubai to transition away from fossil fuels. &nbsp;

Maina Talia, Tuvalu's climate change minister, echoed these concerns, highlighting that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is not just a number but a "lifeline for Pacific communities facing rising seas, accelerating extreme weather disasters and the erosion of our cultures".&nbsp;

"We will continue to keep industrialised countries accountable for their actions... Our future lies solely in their hands," he said.

<h2>Australia and Cop31</h2>

Australia is lobbying to co-host Cop31 in 2026 with Pacific countries, competing against Turkey. &nbsp;

While Pacific nations back Australia’s bid for what’s being dubbed "the Pacific Cop," leaders, including Tonga's and Palau's, stress it must prioritise lifting commitments to cut emissions and support the most vulnerable in the region, reports The Guardian.&nbsp;

Speaking in Azerbaijan, Tuvalu's climate change minister&nbsp;Talia remarked, that co-host Cop31 would be "an exciting opportunity to accelerate ambitious climate action in our region".

However, she stressed that "a commitment to end new fossil fuels must lie at the heart of this... That means no new coal and gas, and a fair, fast phase-out of all fossil fuels."

The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has declared that 2024 is “virtually certain” to set a record as the hottest year globally, beating 2023's record as the world's warmest since records began.

This comes just before the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, where leaders will push for significant funding boosts to combat climate change.

<h2>The hottest year on record</h2>

C3S data from January to October shows global temperatures climbing so steeply that only an unlikely, drastic cooling in the last months could prevent 2024 from setting a new high.

Talking to Reuters, C3S Director Carlo Buontempo said, “The fundamental, underpinning cause of this year's record is climate change.”

For the first time, Earth in 2024 will cross the 1.5&nbsp;°C warming threshold compared to the 1850-1990 pre-industrial levels. This milestone—once considered a distant risk—is now effectively here, warn scientists.

In the US, Hurricane Milton was similarly exacerbated by human-driven climate change.

In the US, Hurricane Milton was similarly exacerbated by human-driven climate change. (With inputs from agencies)

The United Nations released a report on Thursday stating that the current climate policies of all countries will result in an increase in global warming of more than 3 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.&nbsp;

The report also mentioned that the increase in global warming is twice the rise which was agreed to nearly ten years ago. The annual Emissions Gap report released by the UN keeps an account of the promises made by countries to control climate change compared with what is actually needed, stating that global temperature could rise by 3.1 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100. This also shows the government’s shortfall in the commitment to control the climate.&nbsp;

The United Nations Environment Programme said to keep global temperature under 1.5 degrees celsius, emissions have to fall 42 per cent by 2023, compared to the levels in 2019. To limit global warming under 2 degrees celsius, emissions should fall by 28 per cent by 2030.

As Reuters cited, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a speech on Thursday, "We're teetering on a planetary tightrope”. He added, "Either leaders bridge the emissions gap, or we plunge headlong into climate disaster".

Climate Change: UN report warns global temperature to increase by 3.1 C without proper action

Diamonds to the rescue! A girl's best friend can also save the planet from overheating caused by climate change. A team of climatologists, meteorologists, and Earth scientists suggests that even though it might seem odd, this might become a reality someday.

The researchers explored the potential of diamond dust that can be released from an aeroplane into the atmosphere as a potential solution to reverse global warming.

Earth is heating up and experts suggest it might have already reached a point of no return. Drastic measures need to be taken to dramatically cool down the planet and simply curbing greenhouse gas emissions might not help.&nbsp;

Scientists worldwide agree that injecting aerosols into the atmosphere can help solve the problem as it can reflect sunlight and excess heat back into space. Sulfur dioxide, which naturally occurs in the atmosphere from volcanic eruptions, has been the frontrunner in this race.

However, it comes with its side effects and can cause acid rain across the world, damage the ozone layer, and also cause unpredictable weather changes in the lower atmosphere.

So they were forced to look for other viable options. Experts conducted a study in the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich where they created a 3D climate model to know the impacts of different types of aerosols.

They evaluated their interaction with light and heat, their longevity in the air, their potential to group together, and how they would eventually fall back to Earth.

<h2>Diamonds can save the planet, but will prove costly</h2>

They found seven candidates that could solve the problem - calcite, diamond, aluminium, silicon carbide, anatase, rutile, and sulfur dioxide, were put to the test. Diamond dust emerged as the surprising winner.

Diamond dust was found to reflect the most light and heat in the experiment. The dust could also remain aloft for suitable lengths of time and was less likely to clump together to retain heat.&nbsp;

The added bonus was that it would not create acid rain because it&nbsp;is chemically inert.&nbsp;

However, considering it is diamonds, the solution comes with a huge price tag. The model recommends that Earth can be cooled down by approximately 1.6°C in 45 years if about five million tonnes of synthetic diamond dust is injected into the atmosphere every year. This exercise would cost a whopping $200 trillion.&nbsp;

The process also has significant technological and logistical challenges. Current manufacturing technologies and infrastructure are not apt for the scenario and need to advance manifold to create and synthesise the diamond dust on such a massive scale.&nbsp;

To deploy the diamond dust every year means having a specialised aircraft or spacecraft to release the particles at the requisite altitude globally.&nbsp;

Scientists tout diamond dust, a $200 trillion solution, to cool down Earth

A preliminary investigation by an international team of researchers revealed that the amount of carbon absorbed by land drastically decreased in 2023, the hottest year on record, according to a report in The Guardian.

A preliminary investigation by an international team of researchers revealed that the amount of carbon absorbed by land drastically decreased in 2023, the hottest year on record, according to a report in The Guardian. This resulted in forests, plants, and soil absorbing minimal carbon during that period. Melting ice disrupting ocean carbon absorption Another study cited by The Guardian highlighted that the glaciers in Greenland and the Arctic ice sheets are melting more rapidly than expected. This is affecting the Gulf Stream ocean current, which is also slowing the rate at which oceans are able to absorb carbon. Long-term effects on carbon storage in oceans The drop in carbon absorption may not be a short-term issue. Melting sea ice is exposing algae-eating zooplankton to increased sunlight, causing them to remain deeper underwater for longer periods. This interrupts their vertical migration, a process that helps store carbon on the ocean floor, which could have long-term consequences. Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, spoke at the New York Climate Week event in September, warning, “We’re seeing cracks in the resilience of the Earth’s systems. We’re seeing massive cracks on land – terrestrial ecosystems are losing their carbon store and carbon uptake capacity, but the oceans are also showing signs of instability.” Also read: Watch: Three-armed robot conducts orchestra with 'lightsaber' baton - Is this the future of music? While the 2023 collapse of land's carbon absorption may be temporary, depending on the presence of drought or wildfires, it highlights the vulnerability of these ecosystems, with serious consequences for the climate. Lack of large-scale carbon removal technology In the absence of large-scale technology capable of removing atmospheric carbon, Earth's forests, grasslands, peatlands, and oceans remain the primary natural systems absorbing carbon emissions, which reached a record 37.4 billion tonnes in 2023. Climate models may underestimate global warming Most climate models have not accounted for such a swift decline in land carbon sinks, as witnessed in 2023. If this trend continues, it could lead to faster global warming than these models have projected. Regional variation in forest carbon absorption A study published in July revealed that while forests consistently absorbed carbon between 1990 and 2019, the amount absorbed varied greatly depending on the region. Boreal forests, which hold about one-third of the world’s land-based carbon and span Russia, Scandinavia, Canada, and Alaska, have experienced a sharp reduction in carbon absorption—over a third of it lost due to beetle infestations, fires, and logging, all driven by the climate crisis. Global heating driven by collapsing land sinks Combined with the weakening resilience of the Amazon rainforest and drought conditions across tropical regions, the extreme heat in northern forests contributed to the collapse of land carbon sinks in 2023, leading to a sharp rise in atmospheric carbon levels. An Alaska village has been devastated by the impacts of climate change, highlighting the growing threat of global warming. Rising temperatures have accelerated coastal erosion, melting permafrost, and increased flooding, forcing residents to relocate as their homes and infrastructure are destroyed. This disaster is a stark reminder of the escalating environmental crisis driven by global warming, which continues to disrupt vulnerable communities and ecosystems worldwide. Experts warn that without immediate action to curb emissions, more areas could face similar destruction in the coming years.

Amid increasing heat waves due to climate change that is increasingly posing a threat to life, researchers warn of a "life or death" situation for major cities should the planet turn 3 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels.

The research shared by scientists at the World Resources Institute (WRI) reveals what could happen in nearly 1,000 big cities if the temperature&nbsp;keeps warming at current rates. Over 2.1 billion are likely to be affected adversely in these cities.

Scientists cautioned on Thursday that heatwaves are expected to become more frequent with longer duration. The demand for air conditioners would rise, just as widespread illnesses would increase.&nbsp;

"At 3 degrees C of warming, many cities could face month-long heatwaves, skyrocketing energy demand for air conditioning, as well as a shifting risk for insect-borne diseases — sometimes simultaneously," the authors wrote.

In 2005, global warming was limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius after 200 nations agreed in Paris to prevent the catastrophic consequences of climate change. According to the latest UN assessments, the cap today would be at 2.9 degrees Celsius to combat climate change.

"The difference between 1.5 degrees C and 3 degrees C has life-or-death consequences for billions of people worldwide," said Rogier van den Berg of WRI, an America-based think tank.

<h2>Low-income nations to be more exposed</h2>

The report highlights that fast-growing cities in low-income nations would face the worst consequences of rising temperatures. Poorest cities remain more exposed as they lack the means to adapt to rising temperatures.

"People living in low-income cities will be the hardest hit," says the report.

It is predicted that two-thirds of the world's population will reside in cities by 2050. Out of which 90 per cent growth will be seen in African and Asian countries.

<h2>Dire consequences</h2>

WRI estimated that the longest heatwaves in large cities could prolong to 16.3 days on average every year if the global temperatures rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, they could go on to 24.5 days in a scenario where the average increase is 3 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The frequency of heatwaves is also likely to increase from 4.9 to 6.4 on average in a year, which would lead to a massive surge in the demand for air conditioning and energy.

Hotter cities will also provide ideal conditions for mosquitoes, which carry life-threatening arboviruses. The researchers predict that the risk of arbovirus will remain in major cities of Brazil for at least six months at 3 degrees Celsius increased temperatures.

While the number of peak malaria days would likely reduce across the world, the temperate zones in Europe and North America could experience a rise.

Sub-Saharan African capital cities like Dakar, Freetown, and others "could suffer heatwaves of more than a month" seven times a year on average.

"This data should serve as a wakeup call... now is the time to start preparing cities for a much hotter world while doing everything we can to slash emissions," said van den Berg.

Climate change is threatening the plantation of napa cabbage that is used to make South Korea's signature dish, Kimchi. The rising temperatures are leading to a decline in the quality and quantity of the produce, according to farmers, manufacturers, and scientists.

Napa cabbage thrives in colder climates and is grown in mountainous regions with temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius during the summer months. The rise of warmth in the weather conditions makes it unsuitable to grow this crop, which could lead to South Korea not being able to grow napa cabbage altogether one day due to rising heat.

"We hope these predictions don’t come to pass," plant pathologist and virologist Lee Young-gyu said.

A shocking new study has made startling revelations about the rise in global temperatures. A team of scientists analysed Pacific Ocean sediments and found that the world can witness up to 14 degrees rise in temperatures, far more than what the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted.&nbsp;

Doubling atmospheric Carbon Dioxide can push levels beyond current expectations of 2.3 to 4.5 degrees Celsius (4.1 to 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit).

Researchers from NIOZ and the Universities of Utrecht and Bristol studied the Pacific sediments near California and found that Earth’s average temperature can rise by 7 to 14 degrees Celsius (13 to 25.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

“The temperature rise we found is much larger than the 2.3 to 4.5 degrees Celsius (4.1 to 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit) that the UN climate panel, IPCC, has been estimating so far,” said the study's first author, Caitlyn Witkowski.

A method developed 20 years ago at NIOZ, called the TEX86 method, was used to determine the past seawater temperature and to find hints of ancient atmospheric CO2 levels.&nbsp;

A 45-year-old drill core extracted from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean was used for the study. Professor Jaap Sinninghe Damsté, senior scientist at NIOZ and professor of organic geochemistry at Utrecht University, said, "The ocean floor at that spot has had oxygen-free conditions for many millions of years", which made it an attractive candidate.

<h2>The climate study</h2>

To derive past atmospheric CO2 content, researchers used the chemical composition of chlorophyll and cholesterol - the two substances commonly found in algae.

They found clues that indicate a dramatic drop in CO2 concentration 15 million years ago. It came down from 650 parts per million to 280 just before the industrial revolution.&nbsp;

When the scientists placed the derived temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels of the past 15 million years together, they found that the average temperature at that time was way beyond what we have today. It was on average 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit): four degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than current temperatures.&nbsp;

Worryingly, the IPCC predicts temperatures to reach this high in the year 2100 only if the Earth faces the most extreme scenario.

“So, this research gives us a glimpse of what the future could hold if we take too few measures to reduce CO2 emissions," Damsté said.&nbsp;

“The clear warning from this research is: CO2 concentration is likely to have a stronger impact on temperature than we are currently taking into account!”

It came down from 650 parts per million to 280 just before the industrial revolution. When the scientists placed the derived temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels of the past 15 million years together, they found that the average temperature at that time was way beyond what we have today. It was on average 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit): four degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than current temperatures. × Worryingly, the IPCC predicts temperatures to reach this high in the year 2100 only if the Earth faces the most extreme scenario. “So, this research gives us a glimpse of what the future could hold if we take too few measures to reduce CO2 emissions," Damsté said. “The clear warning from this research is: CO2 concentration is likely to have a stronger impact on temperature than we are currently taking into account!”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio&nbsp;Guterres&nbsp;voiced a global climate "SOS" at a Pacific islands summit on Tuesday (Aug 27), unveiling research that shows the region's seas rising much more swiftly than global averages.&nbsp;

"I am in Tonga to issue a global SOS, Save Our Seas, on rising sea levels. A worldwide catastrophe is putting this Pacific paradise in peril" he said.

Sparsely populated and with few heavy industries, the Pacific islands collectively pump out less than 0.02 per cent of global emissions every year.&nbsp;

But this vast arc of volcanic islands and low-lying coral atolls also inhabits a tropical corridor that is rapidly threatened by encroaching oceans.&nbsp;

The World Meteorological Organisation has been monitoring tide gauges installed on the Pacific's famed beaches since the early 1990s.&nbsp;

A new report released by the top UN climate monitoring body showed seas had risen by around 15 centimetres in some parts of the Pacific in the last 30 years.&nbsp;

The global average was 9.4 centimetres, according to the report.&nbsp;

"It is increasingly evident that we are fast running out of time to turn the tide," said the forecasting agency's top official Celeste Saulo.

'Save Our Seas': UN issues SOS over fast-rising Pacific Ocean

A brief respite from record-breaking heat in July hasn't changed the alarming trajectory: 2024 is increasingly poised to be the hottest year in history, according to the EU's climate service.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) stated last month was the second warmest on record books going back to 1940, only slightly cooler than July 2023.

Between June 2023 and June 2024, every month eclipsed its own temperature record for the time of the year.&nbsp;

"The streak of record temperatures has come to a close, but by the slimmest of margins," said Samantha Burgess, deputy director of C3S.

Notably, last month the global average temperature was 16.91 degrees Celsius, only 0.04C below July 2023, according to C3S's monthly bulletin.&nbsp;

But "the overall situation hasn't changed, climate crisis is deepening," said Burgess.

"The devastating effects of climate change started well before 2023 and will continue until global greenhouse gas emissions reach net zero," she further said.

As recorded from January to July global temperatures were 0.70C above the 1991-2020 average.&nbsp;

This irregularity would need to drop considerably for the remaining year for 2024 not to be hotter than 2023 -- "making it increasingly likely that 2024 is going to be the warmest year on record", said C3S.&nbsp;

It may be mentioned here, July 2024 was 1.48C warmer than the estimated average temperatures for the month during the period 1850-1900, before the world started to swiftly burn fossil fuels.

This has resulted in unbearable heat for hundreds of millions of people.

C3S researchers found that while the switch from El Niño to La Niña was underway, ocean air temperatures in many parts of the world continued to be exceptionally high.

On Wednesday, World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Celeste Saulo reflected on a year of "widespread, intense and extended heatwaves". &nbsp;

"This is becoming too hot to handle," she said.

EU warns 2024 could be record-breaking hot year

Earth just witnessed its hottest day ever on July 21st, according to the European Union's Copernicus climate monitoring service.

The global average surface air temperature on Sunday reached 17.09 degrees Celsius (62.76 degrees Fahrenheit) — a little higher than the previously recorded (17.08 C - 62.74 F) on last July.&nbsp;

With heatwaves continuing to intensify worldwide, there's a chance this week could break the record for the hottest day ever recorded, according to Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

"When you have these peaks, they tend to cluster together," he said.

It may be mentioned here, last year saw four days in a row break the record, from July 3 through July 6, as climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, drove extreme heat across the Northern Hemisphere.

Since June 2023, each month has been the hottest ever recorded for that specific month, compared to past years.

However, some scientists have suggested 2024 could go beyond 2023 as the hottest year since records began, as climate change and the El Nino natural weather phenomenon — which ended in April — have pushed temperatures ever higher this year.

"As a effect of the increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere — we are bound to see new records being broken in the next few months, in the next few years," Buontempo said.

Scientists and environmental activists have time and again called for global leaders and wealthier countries to phase out and end the reliance on fossil fuels to prevent catastrophic effects of climate change, including increased heatwaves.

Global heatwave shatters record: Earth sees hottest day on record

The United Kingdom's top climate change advisory body, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), has issued a stark warning to Keir Starmer's new Labour government, urging it to act "fast" to put Britain on target to meet its 2030 climate targets.&nbsp;

It pointed out that the UK has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 68 per cent from 1990 levels by 2030, which is "only six years away," and that "the country is not on track to hit this target".

The CCC, as per AFP,&nbsp;said that only a "third of the emissions reductions required to achieve the 2030 target are currently covered by credible plans".

It said that while notable progress has been made in reducing emissions from energy production, particularly because of the closure of coal-fired power plants, other sectors such as transport and construction require attention.

"Action is needed across all sectors of the economy," the watchdog said in its annual report, as it outlined 10 recommendations, including the widespread adoption of heat pumps and electric vehicles.&nbsp;

<h2>Transition from oil and gas</h2>

The CCC report stressed that low-carbon technologies "must become the norm."

It also emphasised the need for the UK to give up its reliance on oil and gas. CCC said there was a "significant" decrease in CO2 emissions last year and noted that there was "some good progress on policy" under the previous Rishi Sunak-Conservative administration.&nbsp;

However, it also criticised the "inconsistent messages" on the previous government's "commitment to the actions needed to reach Net Zero".

James Richardson, the CCC's interim director general, told reporters that Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government must "send clear signals to households and firms on the direction of travel in these sectors".

He acknowledged the "positive action" taken by the new administration, such as unblocking onshore wind power and setting ambitious solar power goals were "really encouraging." Still, he stressed, "we do need to see this action (spread) wider than just the energy supply sector."
