Germany: Cycling rally replaces parade on Christopher Street Day in Hamburg

With an increase in the positive coronavirus cases in Germany, the local authorities are now reimposing some restrictions to contain the spread of the virus.

However, some of the local groups are not happy with this decision as they feel the rules are violating people’s rights and freedoms.

Demanding 'I want my life back', anti-vaccination activists took to streets to protest against the measure imposed by the government. The local police estimated a presence of nearly 17,000 people which included anti-vaccination activists, libertarians and constitutional loyalists. There was also a small far-right presence with some marchers carrying Germany’s black, white and red imperial flag.

The protestors held banners that read 'We are making a noise because you are stealing our freedom!’ and ‘Do think! Don’t wear a mask!’. Changing the lyrics to 'We are free people', the protestors sang and danced to Queen's "We will rock you" song.

Claiming the masks to be 'enslaving the people', the protestors made it clear that they do not want to wear face masks. Berlin Police filed a complaint against the organiser of the march, alleging the organiser of failing to ensure marchers wore masks and kept their distance.

Social Democrat co-leader Saskia Esken, criticised the protest for putting everyone's lives at danger and called the protestors “covidiots”.

"Thousands #Covidioten celebrate in #Berlin as "the second wave", without a gap, without a mask. They not only endanger our health, they endanger our successes against the pandemic and for the revitalization of the economy, education and society. Irresponsible!,” tweeted Esken.

China's embassy in Germany condemned Berlin`s suspension of its extradition treaty with Hong Kong, a move Germany said was a response to the postponement of an election in the Chinese city.

In a statement on its website, dated Friday, China's embassy said the suspension violated international law and the basic norms of international relations, and "grossly interferes with China`s internal affairs."

The embassy expressed "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" to the minister`s remarks, and said that China "reserves the right to respond further," without elaborating.

Germany Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Friday that Berlin will suspend its extradition agreement with Hong Kong, after Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam postponed a Sept. 6 election to the city`s legislature by a year.

"The Hong Kong government`s decision to disqualify a dozen opposition candidates for the election and postpone the elections to the legislature is another infringement on the rights of the citizens of Hong Kong," Maas said.

"We have repeatedly made our expectation clear that China lives up to its legal responsibilities under international law," he said, adding that this included ensuring rights under the Basic Law as well as the right to free and fair elections.

Germany's disease control agency voiced "great concern" Tuesday over rising virus numbers in the country as authorities issued a travel warning against parts of Spain.

"We must prevent that the virus once again spreads rapidly and uncontrollably," Robert Koch Institute head Lothar Wieler told reporters.

"The latest developments in the number of COVID-19 cases are of great concern to me and all of us at the RKI," he said.

Germany has fared better than many of its neighbours in suppressing the virus, but Wieler urged citizens not to squander the progress following a spike numbers in recent weeks.

"It's in our hands how the pandemic evolves in Germany," Wieler said, calling on Germans to stick with prevention measures such as washing hands and keeping a safe distance.

Face masks should be worn not only indoors, but also outdoors, if the recommended 1.5-metre (5-foot) distancing cannot be maintained, he said, in a subtle update of the prior advice.

The stark warning comes as countries around the world grapple with a surge in infections, fuelling fears of a dreaded second wave.

Holidaymakers returning from abroad have stoked particular concern.

Germany's foreign ministry updated its travel advisory on Tuesday, recommending against travel to three regions in northern Spain grappling with renewed outbreaks.

"Non essential, tourist travel to the autonomous communities of Aragon, Catalonia and Navarra are currently discouraged due to renewed high levels of infections and local lockdowns," a statement said.

The RKI chief said Germans bringing the virus back from their summer holidays was one reason for the surge in cases, but he also pointed to outbreaks happening at workplaces and open-air parties.

Germany has so far recorded a total of 206,242 coronavirus cases and 9,122 deaths.

Berlin has taken great pride in keeping the fatality numbers low, crediting its world-class health system and widespread early testing for the success.

But Wieler said other countries such as Israel had shown how quickly the situation can change.

Over the last seven days, Germany has registered an average of 557 new cases a day, up from around 350 in early June.

"We don't know yet if this is the beginning of a second wave but of course it could be," Wieler said.

"But I am optimistic that if we follow the hygiene rules we can prevent it, it's up to us."

"We are also checking whether it is legally possible to oblige someone to do a test, because it would be an encroachment on freedom," Health Minister Jens Spahn told a local radio channel.

Spahn and his counterparts from the 16 federal states of Germany have also announced that these compulsory coronavirus tests will be free of cost on a voluntary basis.

The leaders of France, Germany and Italy on Saturday threatened for the first time to use sanctions against countries that continued to violate a United Nations arms embargo on Libya.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte urged "all foreign actors to end their increasing interference and to fully respect the arms embargo established by the United Nations Security Council" in a joint statement issued by the French presidency after meeting in Brussels.

"We are ready to consider the possible use of sanctions if the breaches of the embargo at sea, on land or in the air continue, and look forward to the proposals that the High Representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy will make in this regard," they said

Turkey has intervened decisively in recent weeks in Libya, providing air support, weapons and allied fighters from Syria to help the internationally recognised government based in Tripoli repel a year-long assault by the forces of eastern commander Khalifa Haftar.

Haftar is backed by the UAE, Egypt and Russia, which have also been accused by the U.N. of breaking the embargo.

The Tripoli-based government on Saturday moved fighters closer to Sirte, a gateway to Libya`s main oil terminals, which the government says it plans to recapture from Haftar's forces.

France has itself faced criticism for its ambiguity with regard to Haftar, having previously backed him in the fight against Islamist militants.

At least thirty-nine people were taken into custody after police were attacked with "a hail of bottles" at an open-air party in central Frankfurt attended by thousands of youngsters, AFP report said quoting police in the German city on Sunday.

At least thirty-nine people were taken into custody after police were attacked with "a hail of bottles" at an open-air party in central Frankfurt attended by thousands of youngsters, AFP report said quoting police in the German city on Sunday. Five officers were injured in the attack that began at around 3:00 am (0100 GMT) when police intervened to stop a brawl involving around 30 people in Frankfurt's historic Opera square. The square has become a popular gathering place for what local media have dubbed "corona parties" as Germany's bars and clubs remain closed to contain the spread of the virus. Some 3,000 mainly young people filled the square again on Saturday evening but only around 500 to 800 were still there when the unrest started, Frankfurt police chief Gerhard Bereswill told a press conference. A small group of officers moved in to help a bleeding man and end the brawl, but the crowd turned on them. "What I find especially abhorrent is that bystanders cheered and clapped when bottles hit my colleagues," Bereswill said. Back-up police then arrived and cleared the square, while facing "a hail of bottles" from the angry crowd, he said. A total of 39 arrests were made, including one woman. The others were men aged 17-21 "most of whom have a migrant background", Bereswill added. Eight people remain in custody and face possible charges of disturbing the peace. Tensions have also spilled over from the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in the United States where officers are accused of being racist. (With inputs from AFP)

German police said Friday they have caught the "Black Forest Rambo", a heavily armed suspect accused of stealing officers' weapons and going on the run in the woods, after a massive six-day manhunt.

Yves Rausch, 31, was found sitting in a bush after a tip-off from two witnesses, "with four guns visible in front of him", said Juergen Rieger, the head of the search operation.

The suspect also had an axe in his lap and one further gun, and there was a letter in front of him, Rieger said.

Rausch was slightly injured in the arrest, as was a member of the special forces who was cut with the axe.

Uwe Gaiser, the mayor of the village of Oppenau, told reporters "I am relieved, happy and grateful that this exceptional situation for our town has come to an end."

Rausch had fled into the forest on Sunday after he managed to disarm four police officers, sparking a huge search operation.

More than 2,500 officers combed the area with the help of special forces, helicopters, sniffer dogs and thermal imaging cameras for the fugitive, nicknamed "Black Forest Rambo" by the German press after pictures emerged of him dressed in combat gear.

Rausch had been homeless since autumn last year and had been squatting in the hut where he was spotted on Sunday.

According to a former neighbour who described him as "not an easy person", he Rausch did odd jobs as a rail worker and a golf course caretaker, the Bild tabloid reported.

Various weapons and petrol canisters were found in his apartment after he was evicted, as well as a small shooting range in the attic, according to Bild.

He then reportedly lived in his car by the local swimming pool for a while before moving into the hut at the edge of the forest.

Rausch will be examined by a psychiatrist due to the "gravity of the crime" and his past history, Schaefer said.

In addition, a blood sample will be taken to check whether he was under the influence of drugs or other substances.

A German court on Tuesday has ruled that specific terms used by electric car company Tesla for its assistance feature including the 'Autopilot' are false advertisement.

A German court on Tuesday has ruled that specific terms used by electric car company Tesla for its assistance feature including the 'Autopilot' are false advertisement. The judges at the higher state court in Munich said that Tesla's offer on 'Autopilot' as an option to buy a Model 3 vehicle with "full potential for autonomous driving" were "misleading business acts". In a statement, the court said: "Use of the relevant terms creates an expectation... that does not correspond to the actual facts." According to the judge's findings, Tesla's "Autopilot" does not enable a trip without any human intervention at all such a technology be legal under present German law. The case was brought up by an NGO called the Centre for Combatting Unfair Competition that said Tesla's autonomous driving technology at best reaches level two on a five-point scale in which five corresponds to completely driverless travel. "Since auto-piloted, autonomous driving is neither legally permitted nor technically possible for the vehicle in question, Tesla has to play by the rules and cannot make false advertising promises," the centre's lawyer Andreas Ottofuelling said in a statement. However, the court's ruling is not final and it can be appealed. (Inputs from AFP)

Germany will host Turkey and the Czech Republic in international friendlies this autumn as part of their Nations League preparations, the German FA confirmed Monday.

Germany plan to host Turkey in Cologne on October 7 and the Czech Republic in Leipzig on November 11 followed by Nations League games against either Spain, Ukraine or Switzerland.

On Friday, the German FA confirmed they will host Spain in Cologne on September 3, then face the Swiss away three days later, both in the Nations League.

The home friendly against Turkey on October 7 starts a run of three internationals in six days before Nations League matches away to Ukraine and home to Switzerland.

Likewise, the friendly against the Czechs on November 11 comes before back-to-back Nations League matches at home to Ukraine, then away to Spain.

"We would like to use the international matches in the autumn to give our young team some matches," said Germany head coach Joachim Loew.

"With a view to next year's European Championship we want to grow together and these games will give us important insights for the team's development."

Matches in Germany are currently played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic but Loew added that he "hopes" fans will be allowed to watch his team in stadiums again this autumn.

Germany have yet to play an international in 2020 after friendlies against Spain, Italy and Switzerland were called off due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

A press officer from Bayern Munich declined to comment when contacted by AFP. Neuer's managers were not immediately available for comment. According to Magazine Focus, Neuer was "naive to think" the clip would not emerge in the media. At the same time, "assuming that with this song Neuer supports Croatian nationalist ideas would be a little too far-reaching", it said. (Inputs from AFP)

'Oldest profession needs help': Sex workers of Hamburg demand reopening of Germany's brothels

Prostitutes demonstrated in Hamburg's red light district late on Saturday evening demanding that Germany's brothels be allowed to reopen after months of closure to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Prostitutes demonstrated in Hamburg's red light district late on Saturday evening demanding that Germany's brothels be allowed to reopen after months of closure to curb the spread of coronavirus. With shops, restaurants and bars all open again in Germany, where prostitution is legal, sex workers say they are being singled out and deprived of their livelihoods despite not posing a greater health risk. "The oldest profession needs your help," read a notice held up by one woman in a brothel window in the Herbertstrasse, which was flooded with red light after being dark since March. Some protesters wore theatrical masks while one played folk songs on a violin in the street just around the corner from the Reeperbahn, famous for its nightlife. The Association of Sex Workers, which organised the protest, says the continued closure of licensed premises is forcing some prostitutes onto the streets, which is illegal and a far more dangerous and unhygienic way of working. It said brothels could easily incorporate pandemic safety measures adopted by other industries, including face masks, ventilating premises and recording visitors' contact details. "Prostitution does not carry a greater risk of infection than other close-to-body services, like massages, cosmetics or even dancing or contact sports," the association said in a statement. "Hygiene is part of the business in prostitution."

Germany adopted a national strategy on Wednesday to promote gender equality for the first time in its history, aiming to put an end to years of sluggish progress on equal rights and treatment for women.

The strategy sets out goals for all government departments, including closing the gender pay gap and better representation for women in business and politics, Families Minister Franziska Giffey said.

"This is the first equality strategy in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany that has been coordinated and agreed across all departments," Giffey said, describing the strategy as a "milestone".

The plan includes a focus on work-life balance and the fact that women are more likely to work part-time or not at all because of family commitments.

It also focuses on increasing the number of women in management positions, including in the civil service, and on better representation in politics.

The ruling conservative CDU party has this week already shown movement on the issue, with party leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer announcing new binding quotas that will see women filling at least 50 percent of senior positions at a local level by 2025.

The government is also working on a strategy to increase the number of women on executive boards so that an existing 30 percent quota will apply to 600 companies instead of 105 currently, Giffey said.

Below European average
Despite being led by a female chancellor, Germany sits below the European average when it comes to equality between men and women, according to a 2019 index from the European Institute for Gender Equality.

Women earn an average 20 percent less than men and occupy only around 15 percent of executive board positions.

Representation of women in the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, is currently at its lowest for 20 years, and more than 90 percent of local mayors are male, Giffey said.

Historically, gender equality was a particular sticking point in the former West Germany, where women still needed permission from their husbands to work until 1977.

Shortly before reunification, just over half of women in West Germany were employed in the workforce, compared with 91 percent of women in communist East Germany.

The coronavirus crisis has only exacerbated gender disparities, according to some observers.

"It is quite obvious that women have borne the main burden in families," judge Elke Buedenbender, the wife of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said in an interview with the Funke media group in June.

"It seems to me that in the time of coronavirus, women have been more prepared to fall back into traditional roles than men have to take a step back from their careers," she said.

German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said Sunday he wanted to overhaul the country's finance watchdog Bafin and give it more powers after a massive fraud scandal involving digital payments firm Wirecard.

Wirecard filed for bankruptcy late last month after admitting that 1.9 billion euros ($2.1 billion) was missing from its accounts, a case that has triggered criticism of the auditors and regulators meant to be overseeing the firm.

Scholz told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper he wanted to ditch the current two-stage procedure whereby Bafin is only called in when red flags are raised in a first vetting of accounts by a private monitoring body.

"We need far-reaching reforms," Scholz said, adding that Bafin needed to step in earlier and have the right to launch "special audits on a large scale".

"I want to give Bafin more control rights over financial reports, regardless of whether the company has a banking division," he went on.

"If we decide that Bafin needs more money, more employees and more competencies, I will work to ensure that happens."

Bafin chief Felix Hufeld has admitted that his watchdog "had not been effective enough" at preventing the Wirecard disaster.

But auditing firm EY has also come under scrutiny for signing off on Wirecard's accounts for years before finally warning last month of an "elaborate and sophisticated fraud" at the payments provider.

The scandal has raised questions about whether auditing firms should be rotated more frequently, Scholz said, and whether it makes sense for them to advise and monitor a company at the same time.

German shareholders' association SdK, which has launched legal action against two EY auditors and one former employee over Wirecard, welcomed Scholz's proposals.

Bafin needs to be "completely rebuilt," SdK chief Daniel Bauer told the Handelsblatt financial daily.

"It's not enough to increase the number of employees," he warned. "They have to be the right employees who actually understand the subject matter."

In a series of explosive details emerging from US President Donald Trump’s current tenure, his close aides believed that Trump was a danger to national security after sitting in on his phone calls with other world leaders.

The classified calls, obtained by CNN, asserts how important figures in his administration including former national security adviser John Bolton, former Defense Secretary James Mattis, and former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson felt that Trump was “delusional” after seeing him deal with other leaders.

According to the report, Trump, in conversation with former British Prime Minister Theresa May referred to her as “a fool”, and even called her a coward in how she dealt with the Brexit crisis, NATO, and heavily criticised her immigration policy.

Additionally, he also told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that she was “stupid”, and accused her of being paid by the Russians. CNN’s report also highlighted that Merkel kept her calm during the calls, and the German administration was highly concerned about the way Trump addressed Merkel. However, she kept her composure and always retorted with facts, to Trump’s dismay.

The sources describe his verbal communications with May and Merkel as “near-sadistic”, whereby he “demeaned and denigrated” them. It got so bad that access to the phone calls between Merkel and Trump was put under high scrutiny and was limited to only her immediate aides.

As per the report, Merkel’s rebuttal of the attacks against her were claim, “like water off a duck’s back”. However, he was able to intimidate May, who got “flustered and nervous” after Trump’s remarks. The source told CNN, “he intimidated her and meant to”.

It was owing to such “problematic calls” that Merkel had to limit access to the calls.

The report also mentioned other world leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The former allegedly reached out to him multiple times in a bid to convince him to change his stance on policies, especially concerning the environment. However, he also “bullied and disparaged” them.

Pentagon will soon give US President Donald Trump with a series of options on Monday to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany, with many moving to eastern Europe.

Defence Secretary Mark Esper, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said, on Monday will brief Trump on options for our force posture in Germany.

Trump's announcement of a troop shift came not long after German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced she would not attend a G-7 summit the US president wanted to host this month. The two have long had a strained relationship.

The plan calls for cutting the permanent US troop presence in Germany to 25,000, as Trump announced June 15, for a reduction of 9,500 troops. Some of the 9,500 will return to the US, while others will be transferred to former Soviet-bloc countries.

That shift would be meant as a clear warning to President Vladimir Putin of Russia, whose military ambitions were underscored by the 2014 annexation of the Crimea.

It is being said that Poland would be one of the European countries receiving US troops.

These deployments will be based on bilateral agreements between the US and the concerned countries, and will not be done under the aegis of NATO.

Poland's President Andrzej Duda held a press conference with his US counterpart in Washington. The visit comes few weeks before Polish elections.

While the tour is being critiqued as a failure and an unwanted push to Duda's political campaign, what blindsided the US and its allies was a comment by US President Donald Trump.

When asked about a statement made by his office last week about reducing the number of troops from Germany, Trump quickly told the reporters at the White House “We'll probably be moving them (troops) from Germany to Poland.”

“They (Poland) asked us if we would send some additional troops. They're going to pay for that. They'll be paying for the sending of additional troops. We will probably be moving them from Germany to Poland,” Trump said.

“We're going to be reducing in Germany very substantially down to about 25,000 troops. We actually had 52,000 but we'll be moving it down to about 25,000,” he said.

“Germany's paying a very small fraction of what they're supposed to be paying. They should be paying two per cent and they're paying a little bit more than one per cent depending on how you calculate. They are paying less than one per cent,” he added.

Although he has not confirmed if all the troops, who are being redeployed, will be sent to Poland. Trump has sated that some of the troops might come back to their home country, some might go to Europe, but Poland will definitely be a priority.

The resident has also noted that the shift in troops will send a strong signal to Trump.

“A stronger signal sent to Russia is the fact that Germany is paying billions of dollars to purchase energy from Russia through the pipeline... You're giving billions of dollars to Russia, then we're supposed to defend you from Russia? So, I think it's very bad… I think the people of Germany are very unhappy about it,” he said.

However, after sending a "strong signal" to Russia, Trump expects to get along with Russia -- or as Trump said, "We expect to get along with everybody."

The move is being highly appreciated by the Polish President, who quickly flashed a smile and said, "It shows that if anyone wanted to attack Poland, it won't be a soft landing," Duda said. "Because the strongest army in the world is present and they would help us defend our borders."
