By Wednesday, several dozen artists were spray-painting murals and slogans in support of anti-police brutality protests, Black Lives Matter, and George Floyd, who was killed in Minneapolis last month by a white police officer who pinned him down with his knee.

<p>Ellen Degeneres has received backlash for a tweet that she had posted on social media about the ongoing anti-racism protest that has erupted in various cities of US.<br />
<br />
Degeneres' tweet, which the chat show host later deleted, was termed as vague and tone-deaf.<br />
<br />
The 62-year-old comic is known for ending each episode of her talk show with the phrase "be kind to one another" an shared a powerful video urging her fans to spread love that came along with a pair of tweets advocating for people to donate to worthwhile causes to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Ellen Degeneres has received backlash for a tweet that she had posted on social media about the ongoing anti-racism protest that has erupted in various cities of US. Degeneres' tweet, which the chat show host later deleted, was termed as vague and tone-deaf. The 62-year-old comic is known for ending each episode of her talk show with the phrase "be kind to one another" an shared a powerful video urging her fans to spread love that came along with a pair of tweets advocating for people to donate to worthwhile causes to support the Black Lives Matter movement. But these tweets came after she deleted a tweet that received a lot of criticism for people for lacking any substance. I am making a donation to the George Floyd Memorial Fund, the @NAACP_LDF, @BlkLivesMatter, and the @ACLU in support of them, and I hope you will join me if you are able. #BlackLivesMatter — Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) May 31, 2020 × According to screenshots that were taken of the now-deleted tweet, Degeneres wrote, "Like so many of you, I am angry and I am sad. People of color in this country have faced injustice for far too long. For things to change, things must change. We must commit ourselves to this change with conviction and love." While the message clearly talked about unity, a lot of people took notice of how Degeneres played safe and generalised the movement by mentioned 'People of Colour'. The movement at present talks about the discrimination that Blacks face in America on a daily basis and many felt her generalising the movement did not help. Here are some of the reactions. Not people of color. George Floyd was black. Why are being so cautious? Serious ? — Mae Lee (@Phases4Mae) May 31, 2020 × Black people, Ellen. Now delete. — ali 🦂 (@AliRose1_) May 31, 2020 × Black people Ellen not people of color. #BlackLivesMatter — Shawn The Progressive Black Techie (@ShawnVee07) May 31, 2020 × She deleted the tweet and tried to damage control but many questioned her for not disclosing the amount she had reportedly pledged to George Floyd's foundation. "i still find it funny how Ellen Degeneres, a woman who is famous for boastfully signing life-size checks to random people on her show, can't even post a screenshot on the internet of her donating money in support of Black lives," one user wrote. i still find it funny how Ellen Degeneres, a woman who is famous for boastfully signing life-size checks to random people on her show, can't even post a screenshot on the internet of her donating money in support of Black lives — Motorola Razr (@3pyramider) May 31, 2020 × "Do something. <p>The struggle for staying relevant is real. Ask any Indian celebrity and they will tell you all about it.</p>

<p>Some of them recently had a lot to say about the death of George Floyd. The #blacklivesmatter is trending and&nbsp;speaking out against racism is the politically correct thing to do.</p>

<p>So a lot of our Indian divas jumped in to generate good PR. Only that they forgot they may be guilty of fanning racism.</p>

The struggle for staying relevant is real. Ask any Indian celebrity and they will tell you all about it. Some of them recently had a lot to say about the death of George Floyd.

The struggle for staying relevant is real. Ask any Indian celebrity and they will tell you all about it. Some of them recently had a lot to say about the death of George Floyd. The #blacklivesmatter is trending and speaking out against racism is the politically correct thing to do. So a lot of our Indian divas jumped in to generate good PR. Only that they forgot they may be guilty of fanning racism. View this post on Instagram There is so much work to be done and it needs to starts at an individual level on a global scale. Hypocrisy exposed as Bollywood stars tweet to condemn George Floyd's murder

Protesters and police clash in Paris protest against racism and deadly police violence

<p>For the eighth consecutive day, protests over the death of George Gloyd have raged unabated in the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

United States records 15,846 more COVID-19 cases amid rising protests over George Floyd's death

<p><strong>By Jennifer Selin</strong></p>

<p>After a week of both peaceful protests and violent chaos in the wake of George Floyd’s death, President Donald Trump announced, “If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”</p>

<p>Is Trump’s warning just bluster? Does the president have the authority to send the military into American cities?</p>

<p>The answer to this question involves a web of legal provisions that help define the president’s constitutional roles as commander in chief and chief executive of the country and that simultaneously try to balance presidential power with the power of state leaders.</p>

<p><strong>‘Protect states in times of violence’</strong><br />
<br />
Tracing back to the Magna Carta, the British charter of liberty signed in 1215, there is a longstanding tradition against military involvement in civilian affairs.</p>

<p>However, the US&nbsp;Constitution guarantees that the national government will protect the states in times of violence and permits Congress to enact laws that enable the military to aid in carrying out the law.</p>

<p>Almost immediately after the Constitution’s enactment in 1787, Congress passed a law that allowed the president to use the military to respond to a series of citizen rebellions.</p>

<p>Troops serving as what’s called “posse comitatus,” which translates roughly to “attendants with the capacity to act,” could be called to suppress insurrections and help carry out federal laws.</p>

<p>Following the Civil War, the national government used troops in this capacity to aid in Reconstruction efforts, particularly in states that had been part of the Confederacy.</p>

<p>The use of troops in this manner may even have influenced the outcome of the 1876 presidential election of Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. That happened when, in return for agreeing to withdraw federal troops from the South, Democrats informally agreed to the election of Hayes when the disputed election was thrown to a congressional commission.</p>

<p>Two years later, Hayes signed into law the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibited the use of the military in civilian matters.</p>

<p>The Posse Comitatus Act has not changed much since that time. The law prohibits the use of the military in civilian matters but, over time, Congress has passed at least 26 exemptions to the act that allow the president to send troops into states.</p>

<p>The exemptions range from providing military personnel to protect national parks to helping states in carrying out state quarantine and health laws.</p>

<p><strong>Insurrection Act</strong><br />
<br />
What exemption would President Trump use if he wants to send the military to one or more states?</p>

<p>He would likely rely on the Insurrection Act, which governs certain circumstances when the president can use the military. Signed by Thomas Jefferson in 1807, Congress originally passed the law in order to help fight citizen rebellions against federal taxes.</p>

<p>Over time, the law has evolved to allow the use of troops in other circumstances. For example, Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson used the Insurrection Act in the 1950s and 1960s to send the military to enforce court desegregation orders and to protect civil rights marchers.</p>

<p>It was last invoked by President George H.W. Bush in 1992, when he ordered 4,500 troops to Los Angeles after rioting erupted in response to the acquittal of police officers charged with beating Rodney King.</p>

<p>The Insurrection Act says that the president may use the armed forces to subdue an insurrection or rebellion and take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress violence.</p>

<p>But before doing so, he must issue a proclamation ordering insurgents to disperse and return to their homes.</p>

<p>While state governors and legislatures also have the legal authority to ask the president to use troops in this manner, none have done that during this period of unrest. The states have preferred to rely on a combination of local law enforcement and the National Guard, which is under state command, not federal.</p>

<p>Not only does this strategy enable governors to maintain authority over their states’ responses to the clashes in the wake of George Floyd’s death, but it also keeps things more straightforward legally and politically.</p>

<p><strong>Authority uncertain</strong><br />
<br />
Reliance on the Insurrection Act raises a host of political and practical questions about who is in charge when the military sends troops into a state.</p>

<p>For example, despite the fact that the act was invoked in response to the Rodney King riots, the military actually was not used as directed. The Joint Task Force Commander in control of the mission appears to have been confused regarding how the Insurrection Act worked alongside the provisions of the Posse Comitatus Act. He issued an order prohibiting troops from directly supporting law enforcement and that led to numerous denials of requests for assistance.</p>

<p>Questions about the federal government’s authority in the wake of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana raised similar concerns.</p>

<p>The administration of President George W. Bush determined that it had authority under the Insurrection Act to send federal troops to the area, despite the fact that Louisiana’s governor was opposed to military assistance.</p>

<p>For political reasons, President Bush did not end up deploying troops but, in 2006, Congress amended the law to address concerns that the military was unable to provide effective assistance to states in emergency situations.</p>

<p>The amendment was later repealed when all 50 state governors raised objections to what they perceived as a grant of unilateral power to the president.</p>

<p>These examples suggest a real difficulty balancing governmental responses to domestic crises. States need the flexibility and authority to respond as they see fit to the needs of their citizens.</p>

<p>But the federal government can and often does serve as a supplemental resource. As the events of the past week illustrate, striking an effective balance is rarely a straightforward thing.</p>

Does the president have the authority to send the military into American cities? The answer to this question involves a web of legal provisions that help define the president’s constitutional roles as commander in chief and chief executive of the country and that simultaneously try to balance presidential power with the power of state leaders. ‘Protect states in times of violence’ Tracing back to the Magna Carta, the British charter of liberty signed in 1215, there is a longstanding tradition against military involvement in civilian affairs. However, the US Constitution guarantees that the national government will protect the states in times of violence and permits Congress to enact laws that enable the military to aid in carrying out the law. Almost immediately after the Constitution’s enactment in 1787, Congress passed a law that allowed the president to use the military to respond to a series of citizen rebellions. Troops serving as what’s called “posse comitatus,” which translates roughly to “attendants with the capacity to act,” could be called to suppress insurrections and help carry out federal laws. Following the Civil War, the national government used troops in this capacity to aid in Reconstruction efforts, particularly in states that had been part of the Confederacy. The use of troops in this manner may even have influenced the outcome of the 1876 presidential election of Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. That happened when, in return for agreeing to withdraw federal troops from the South, Democrats informally agreed to the election of Hayes when the disputed election was thrown to a congressional commission. Two years later, Hayes signed into law the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibited the use of the military in civilian matters. The Posse Comitatus Act has not changed much since that time. The law prohibits the use of the military in civilian matters but, over time, Congress has passed at least 26 exemptions to the act that allow the president to send troops into states. The exemptions range from providing military personnel to protect national parks to helping states in carrying out state quarantine and health laws. Insurrection Act What exemption would President Trump use if he wants to send the military to one or more states? He would likely rely on the Insurrection Act, which governs certain circumstances when the president can use the military. Signed by Thomas Jefferson in 1807, Congress originally passed the law in order to help fight citizen rebellions against federal taxes. Over time, the law has evolved to allow the use of troops in other circumstances. For example, Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson used the Insurrection Act in the 1950s and 1960s to send the military to enforce court desegregation orders and to protect civil rights marchers. It was last invoked by President George H.W. Bush in 1992, when he ordered 4,500 troops to Los Angeles after rioting erupted in response to the acquittal of police officers charged with beating Rodney King. The Insurrection Act says that the president may use the armed forces to subdue an insurrection or rebellion and take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress violence. But before doing so, he must issue a proclamation ordering insurgents to disperse and return to their homes. While state governors and legislatures also have the legal authority to ask the president to use troops in this manner, none have done that during this period of unrest. The states have preferred to rely on a combination of local law enforcement and the National Guard, which is under state command, not federal. Not only does this strategy enable governors to maintain authority over their states’ responses to the clashes in the wake of George Floyd’s death, but it also keeps things more straightforward legally and politically. Authority uncertain Reliance on the Insurrection Act raises a host of political and practical questions about who is in charge when the military sends troops into a state. For example, despite the fact that the act was invoked in response to the Rodney King riots, the military actually was not used as directed. The Joint Task Force Commander in control of the mission appears to have been confused regarding how the Insurrection Act worked alongside the provisions of the Posse Comitatus Act. He issued an order prohibiting troops from directly supporting law enforcement and that led to numerous denials of requests for assistance. Questions about the federal government’s authority in the wake of the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana raised similar concerns. The administration of President George W. Bush determined that it had authority under the Insurrection Act to send federal troops to the area, despite the fact that Louisiana’s governor was opposed to military assistance. For political reasons, President Bush did not end up deploying troops but, in 2006, Congress amended the law to address concerns that the military was unable to provide effective assistance to states in emergency situations. The amendment was later repealed when all 50 state governors raised objections to what they perceived as a grant of unilateral power to the president. These examples suggest a real difficulty balancing governmental responses to domestic crises. States need the flexibility and authority to respond as they see fit to the needs of their citizens. But the federal government can and often does serve as a supplemental resource. As the events of the past week illustrate, striking an effective balance is rarely a straightforward thing. Is US on the brink of another civil war?

<p>Like many celebrities across the world, 'Harry Potter' star Emma Watson too paid tribute to George Floyd and posted a black box on her social media page to observe #BalckoutTuesday. The post though received criticism as Watson's post had a white border around the black box and many accused her paying attention to aesthetics on Instagram over the usual cause.<br />

The actress, in the early hours of Wednesday, has clarified and expressed support in the fight against social injustice and racism.</p>

<p>Just a few weeks back, an old video from 'Saturday Night Live' had surfaced on the internet where host and comedian Jimmy Fallon was seen impersonating fellow comedian Chris Rock with blackface.<br />
<br />
Fallon on May 28 had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/jimmy-fallon-apologises-for-impersonating-chris-rock-in-blackface-as-old-video-goes-viral-301245">issued an apology on Twitte</a>r when fans called out the racism laced video. On Monday, the TV presenter opened up once again at the beginning of his show 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'.<br />
<br />
Fallon said he was asked to keep mum on the matter but decided to speak out in a monologue.<br />
<br />
"Seeing what is going on in our country, I'm not going to have a normal show tonight — I'm going to have a different show. I'm going to start this personally, and then expand out, because that's where we all need to start," Fallon said referrring to the nationwide protest that has gripped American citiies over George Floyd's death.<br />

Floyd, an unarmed black man died in police custody last week after a white police officer knelt on his neck for eight minutes.<br />
<br />
"With ourselves, and looking at ourselves in the mirror. And I had to really examine myself in the mirror this week, because a story came out about me on ‘SNL,’ doing an impression of Chris Rock in blackface,” Fallon said. He added that he was “horrified” by the wake of disparagement and calls on social media questioning his character.<br />
<br />
"Not at the fact that people were trying to cancel me, or cancel the show – which is scary enough, but the thing that haunted me the most was how do I say, 'I love this person, I respect this guy more than I respect most humans, I am not a racist, I don't feel this way,'" Fallon said.<br />
<br />
"And instead, what I kept getting advised was to just stay quiet and to not say anything. And that's the advice because we're all afraid."</p>

Fallon said that after first paying heed to the advice, he decided to go against it and speak up.<br />
<br />
"I took it for a minute. I took the advice and I thought, 'Oh God, I'm going to do this wrong. You're right, I'm going to say something and get myself into even more trouble. I'm going to make this worse. I don't know what to do,'" he continued. "So I thought about it, and I realized that I can't not say, 'I'm horrified and I'm sorry and I'm embarrassed.'”<br />
<br />
“What that small gesture did for me was break my own silence, and then what I started to do is talk to some experts – some of which are here tonight and this week – and I realized that the silence is the biggest crime that white guys like me, and the rest of us, are doing."<br />
<br />
"We need to say something," he said. "We need to keep saying something. And we need to stop saying 'That's not okay' more than just one day on Twitter."<br />

During the show, Fallon invited AACP president Derrick Johnson and CNN anchor Don Lemon to speak as he wanted to be a “better ally.”</p>
