The war is raging between Israel and Hamas and attacks from both sides are intensifying. It's now 9 days since Israel declared war on Hamas after an unprecedented ground air and sea assault by the militants over the weekend. The death toll continues to mount on both sides.

Israel-Palestine war: Urban warfare to determine war outcome

As the war in West Asia entered its second week, Israel said that it would take down Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar who is on the radar of defence forces in the wake of the October 7 onslaught, a move reportedly being taken by the Palestinian militant group on his directions. They have launched an intense operation to locate Yahya in Gaza.

Sinwar, who played a key role in orchestrating one of the most devastating attacks in Israeli history and is currently in the crosshairs of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), has also been likened to Osama bin Laden, representing an important target for Israeli authorities.

“When they chose to go full front against Israel, they signed their own death warrants," IDF Lt. Col. Peter Lerner reportedly said.

Yahya Sinwar, a US-designated terrorist, is the current head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Despite facing multiple arrests by Israel and spending 24 years in Israeli prisons, he remains a significant figure in the Hamas hierarchy.

Sinwar got out in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

He is held accountable for the October 7 attack, a tragic event responsible for the loss of thousands of Israeli lives. This assault by Hamas is one of the most significant breaches in Israel's defences since the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

<h2>'The face of evil'</h2>

Described by IDF Lt. Col. Richard Hecht as "the face of evil" and likened to Bin Laden, Sinwar's notoriety stemmed&nbsp;from his ruthless actions, particularly against Palestinians he perceived as collaborators.&nbsp;“He is the mastermind behind this like Bin Laden was," Hecht said.&nbsp;

This reputation earned him the moniker "The butcher of Khan Younis." Israel's military has made it unequivocally clear that they will not rest until Sinwar is located and neutralised. Lt. Col. Hecht reiterated, "That man and his whole team are in our sights. We will get to that man."

<h2>Hamas leadership under scrutiny</h2>

Alongside Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political wing, operates from a base in Qatar, where he leads a lavish lifestyle.

Information regarding last weekend's operation was known to only a select few Hamas leaders, a strategic move to maintain the element of surprise.

What brought Haniyeh to the spotlight yet again was a viral video that started circulating on social media where the Hamas leader was seen watching the assault on Israel from his comfortable office, reportedly in Doha.

Some reports said that Haniyeh's move to lay this big an assault on Israel, widely recognised for having a robust and highly effective defence system, could be because of his ties with Iran and Qatar.&nbsp;

Iran on Saturday (Oct 14) issued a fresh warning to Israel calling it to halt its offensives against Gaza before it is "too late".

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during his visit to the Lebanese capital Beirut, said that there was still a political opportunity to avert a widespread crisis in the region but "in the next few hours, it will be too late".

"There is still a political opportunity to prevent a widespread crisis in the region," Amir-Abdollahian told a press conference in Beirut after stops in Baghdad and Damascus.&nbsp;

But "maybe, in the next few hours, it will be too late," he said, warning that pro-Iran militants "have designed all the scenarios and are prepared, and their finger is on the trigger to shoot."

Although Tehran has voiced support for Hamas, Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denied his country's involvement in the unprecedented attacks launched by the militant group on Israel.

"The supporters of the Zionist regime (Israel) and some people in the usurping regime (a reference to USA) have been spreading rumours over the past two or three days, including that Islamic Iran was behind this action. They are wrong," Khamenei said.

"This destructive earthquake (Hamas' attack) has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily ... The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swiftly called for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to bulldoze the restaurant after the offensive ad gained attention. In response, Israeli settlers congregated around the establishment, demanding its demolition. Pizzeria in West Bank demolished over controversial Holocaust survivor ad

The Israeli Defense Force's canine unit, Oketz, played a significant role in rescuing 200 Israelis and eliminating 10 Hamas terrorists in Kibbutz Be'eri. However, a separate incident at Kibbutz Kfar Aza had a tragic outcome. A dog named Nauru was deployed to track down terrorists and weapons, successfully exposing their location. While IDF soldiers neutralised the terrorists, Nauru tragically lost its life during the intense combat. The soldiers retrieved Nauru's remains for a proper burial.

The commander of the Oketz unit rallied his troops, emphasising their mission to penetrate the Gaza Strip and eliminate all terrorists they encounter. He underscored their unity and strength, expressing determination to prevail.

Oketz, translating to "sting" in Hebrew, meticulously trains its dogs, assigning each a specific speciality such as attack, search and rescue, explosive detection, and weapon location. Their valuable contributions are evident in both rescue operations and confrontations with terrorists, showcasing the unit's unwavering commitment to Israel's security and success.

<h2>'Butchered, limbs mutilated, raped': Israeli forensic teams describe Hamas atrocities</h2>

Following the devastating Hamas assault on Gaza Strip-adjacent communities, Israeli military forensic teams have been examining the victims' bodies, revealing distressing evidence of torture, rape, and other atrocious acts. This revelation has been profoundly shocking as around 1,300 bodies were sent to a central Israeli army base in Ramla for identification.

Rabbi Israel Weiss, a former army chief rabbi involved in the identification process, stated that about 90% of military casualties have been recognised. Furthermore, efforts are ongoing to identify civilian victims. The bodies exhibited troubling signs of torture and sexual assault, including dismemberment, beheadings, and even the tragic death of a child.

This horrifying situation arose from the ruthless October 7 attack, during which hundreds of Hamas gunmen, some on motorcycles, breached Gaza's barriers and rampaged through neighbouring communities. They targeted outdoor events, residences, and military installations, abducting over 120 Israelis and foreigners. The extensive casualties in a single day, along with harrowing images from the affected areas, deeply shook Israel.

Israeli strikes 'kill' Gaza civilians, including children on ‘safe routes’: Reports

The Israeli military, on Saturday (Oct 14), released a statement saying that they had found the bodies of some of the hostages abducted by the Hamas militant group during their operations inside Gaza this week.

"We have found and located some bodies of Israelis who were abducted in the perimeter in the Gaza Strip," a military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner, told a briefing.

Israel claimed that at least 120 people were taken hostage when Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel last week on Oct 7 that claimed the lives of at least 1,300.

The Israeli military has since orchestrated "localised" raids inside Gaza to support an air offensive on the territory that the Hamas government says has killed at least 2,215.

Lerner said the bodies of hostages were found on these "small, close-perimeter raids into the Gaza Strip".

The Israeli military has carried out air raids on thousands of Hamas targets in Gaza, said the spokesman.

"They include quality targets such as drone facilities, they include naval facilities, they include command and control facilities, they include all of the rocket facilities," Lerner said.

"Our assessment suggests that at this time Hamas are in a state of disarray, they have no idea what the situation is above ground, they have escaped into the tunnels."

The officials further indicated that civilians would be given more time to leave the north of the territory ahead of an expected full-scale ground offensive.

Lerner did not say there is a deadline to leave north Gaza but told the briefing: "We have extended once again because we realised that there is a huge amount of people that need to get out. We are continuing to encourage the population in the north of the Gaza Strip and Gaza City to go south and get out of harm's way."

Foreign ministry spokesman Lior Haiat told the briefing that Israel is not demanding that Palestinians leave Gaza but just to get out of the north.

"We gave them (civilians) the time to do so and we will continue to give civilians time to leave the places that we think Hamas is using for its terrorist infrastructure," Haiat said.
