With the US continuing its diplomatic outreach in the wake of Israel’s crackdown against Hamas, new reports now suggest President Joe Biden has been invited by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Israel on a solidarity visit. And amid Biden-Netanyahu's frosty ties, big question remains will Biden accept Netanyahu’s invite?

As the conflict in the Gaza Strip intensifies, hospitals across the region face an alarming crisis: they are perilously close to running out of generator fuel.

The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) issued a dire warning, stating that reserves of fuel in these hospitals are expected to last for only approximately 24 more hours.

Patients' lives in jeopardy as generator fuel dwindles

The scarcity of generator fuel in Gaza's hospitals is more than a logistical challenge; it's a matter of life and death.

According to OCHA, if the backup generators were to shut down, thousands of patients would be left in dire straits with limited access to essential medical care.

Among these patients are children and adults with severe injuries, and their survival hinges on the availability of continuous electricity.

Gaza on the brink

This crisis comes amidst an already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The coastal enclave, besieged for years, is grappling with severe shortages of food, clean water, and basic safety. The situation is further exacerbated by the looming threat of an Israeli ground offensive in response to a deadly attack by Hamas.

The Israeli military, with the support of a growing deployment of US warships in the region, is amassing forces along Gaza's border, preparing for a substantial campaign to dismantle the militant group.

The deadliest of conflicts

The ongoing conflict has already exacted a heavy toll on both sides. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that 2,670 Palestinians have been killed, with 9,600 wounded since the fighting began, reported the Associated Press.

This makes it the deadliest of the five Gaza wars for both Palestinians and Israelis. On the Israeli side, over 1,400 people have lost their lives, primarily civilians, making this the deadliest war since the 1973 conflict with Egypt and Syria.

Amidst this escalating conflict, international efforts to mitigate the crisis are underway. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is returning to Israel after a whirlwind tour of Arab nations aimed at preventing the situation from igniting a broader regional conflict.

There are also talks of a visit by President Joe Biden, although concrete plans have yet to be finalised.

Escalation beyond Gaza

The escalation is not limited to Gaza alone. Fighting along Israel's border with Lebanon has intensified, with Hezbollah militants launching rockets and anti-tank missiles, and Israel responding with airstrikes and shelling. This escalation has resulted in casualties on both sides and threatens to further destabilise the region.

Critical hospital shortages

Critical care facilities, like Nasser Hospital, are inundated with severely wounded patients, many of them young children.

The magnitude of the crisis is evidenced by the decision of Shifa Hospital in Gaza City to bury 100 bodies in a mass grave due to the morgue overflowing. Tens of thousands of people seeking safety have congregated in the hospital compound.

A region running dry

Gaza was already grappling with a humanitarian crisis due to water and medical supply shortages caused by the Israeli siege.

Water supplies are dwindling, and the region is facing an unprecedented catastrophe. The United Nations and other humanitarian organisations are struggling to provide assistance to the growing number of displaced people and those seeking shelter in schools and facilities across Gaza.

The United States is working to broker a deal to reopen Egypt's Rafah crossing with Gaza to allow foreign nationals to leave and deliver humanitarian aid. However, the crossing, closed due to airstrikes early in the war, has yet to reopen. Israel has linked the lifting of the siege to the return of captives.

Crisis looms in Gaza: Hospitals to run out of fuel in 24 hours, says UN

The Israeli military has mobilized tanks on the Gaza Border in preparation for a ground offensive and its targeting of Hamas and its infrastructure. Iran warned Israel of escalation if it failed to end aggression against Palestinians and stated the resistance front can defend itself.

Israel-Palestine war | Ground assault looms: Israel has amassed tanks on Gaza border

At least one person was killed and three others were injured after Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah launched missiles at a northern Israeli border village on Sunday (Oct 15), said the Israeli medics. The Shiite militant group backed by Iran later confirmed its role in the anti-tank guided missile attacks which reportedly began in the morning.

Attacks in northern Israel

According to Israeli media, Hezbollah launched at least five anti-tank guided missiles at the northern town of Shtula, a farming community, which is opposite the Lebanese community of Ayta a-Shab.

The strike has since prompted the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to respond with countermeasures against targets in Lebanon and declared a zone within four kilometres of the Lebanese border off-limits to public access saying that it is “isolating the area”.

“The IDF stresses that entering the area is strictly prohibited and asks the public to be vigilant and not enter the area,” said the Israeli army in a statement.

Israeli residents in Manara, Yiftah, Margaliot, and Ramot Naftali were ordered to remain in bomb shelters until further notice following the recent attack, reported Times of Israel.

Meanwhile, the Iran-backed militant group said that it struck Israel in retaliation for separate "Israeli aggressions" that killed two civilians and struck a group of journalists, killing a Reuters videographer and wounding at least six others.

The IDF also reported that a second missile targeted a nearby military post.

Subsequently, a third missile was fired at a group of Israeli troops operating on the Lebanon border, said the IDF. However, the Iran-backed group said that the third missile attack targeted an Israeli tank.

A fourth and fifth attack was also reported by the IDF which said that their military posts near Lebanon came under fire due to these anti-tank guided missiles.

In an update, the IDF also said that nine rockets were fired from Lebanon out of which the Israeli military's Iron Dome system intercepted five rockets. At least one killed, three injured after Hezbollah attacks northern Israel; Israeli army 'isolates area'

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Cairo on Sunday (Oct 15) and will head back to Israel on Monday for his second visit in less than a week following his visit to six Arab countries, said the State Department. Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s office said he is in talks with international and regional partners to enable aid deliveries into Gaza.

This comes as convoys of humanitarian aid are getting stacked up near Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip, a report by the news agency AFP citing witnesses on Sunday, as it is unable to enter the Palestinian enclave amid bombardment by Israel.

During his visit, Blinken said that the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt "will be open" to send aid into the Palestinian enclave.

Blinken in Cairo

Washington’s top diplomat arrived in Egypt following his visit to Saudi Arabia where he held what he described as “very productive” talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

During the meeting, the Saudi crown prince stressed the need to find ways to stop the conflict and respect international law, including by lifting the Israeli blockade on Gaza, according to the Saudi state news agency SPA.

"We're putting in place with the United Nations, with Egypt, with Israel, with others, the mechanism by which to get the assistance and to get it to people who need it," said Washington's top diplomat in Cairo.

The United States had appointed an envoy, veteran former diplomat David Satterfield, to work on aid to Gaza, said Blinken.

“Secretary Blinken will return tomorrow for further consultations with Israeli leaders,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters as Blinken arrived in Cairo.

‘Collective punishment’: Sisi on Israeli action in Gaza

Sisi told Blinken that Israel’s reaction to Hamas’ attack has gone beyond self-defence and amounted to collective punishment.

The remarks were made in televised comments during a meeting with Washington’s top diplomat in Cairo where he also said that he rejected the targeting of any civilians in the conflict.

Egypt ramps up efforts to get aid to Gaza

A statement from the Egyptian president’s office which was issued following a meeting of the national security council said Egypt rejected any plan to displace Palestinians “to the detriment of other countries” and Cairo’s own security was a red line.

Egypt’s president has also proposed a summit to discuss the crisis, according to the statement.

The Egyptian presidency has also said that it is ramping up efforts to deliver aid to Gaza as humanitarian aid from several countries is building up in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula due to a failure to reach a deal enabling its safe delivery into the Palestinian enclave.

Humanitarian aid stuck on border

Images show a convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian aid as well as volunteers lined up near the Rafah crossing – the only passage in and out of the Gaza Strip not controlled by Israel – which has been closed since Tuesday (Oct 10).

On Sunday, witnesses told AFP that concrete blocks installed by the Egyptians to fortify the border following Israel’s bombings were still in place indicating that no passage was being considered any time soon.

In an interview with CNN, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that while the Rafah crossing was open, the roads leading to it in Gaza were “inoperable” due to Israeli bombardment.

The United Nations aid chief Martin Griffiths on Saturday said that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is now “fast becoming untenable,” with no power, water or fuel in Gaza, and food is running dangerously low.

As a war between Israel and the Hamas militant group escalates, Israel's Defense Forces are now preparing for a ground offensive in Gaza. Israel is poised to launch an attack into the northern half of the Gaza Strip. It is an attack that is filled with uncertainty and whose potential humanitarian consequences are grim as Israel vows to destroy and eliminate Hamas completely.

Israel-Palestine war: Israeli ground offensive in Gaza faces physical & political risks

Israeli military has massed tanks on the Gaza border in preparation for a ground offensive; and is targeting Hamas and its infrastructure. Iran warned Israel of escalation if it failed to end aggression against Palestinians and stated the resistance front can defend itself. Apart from funding Hamas, Israel’s arch-foe backs Hezbollah in Lebanon, where cross-border fire has intensified, prompting Israel to shut the area to civilians. However, Iran’s mission to the UN told news agency Reuters that if Israel did not attack its interests or citizens, then Tehran’s forces would not engage militarily with Tel Aviv. Israel has long accused Iran’s clerical rulers of stoking violence by supplying arms to Hamas. Tehran says it gives moral and financial support to the group, which controls the Gaza Strip. Backing the Palestinian cause has been a pillar of the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution and a way the country has fashioned itself as a leader of the Muslim world.

As Israel prepares for a ground offensive ordering mass evacuations in Gaza and amassing troops at the border, Israel's options are limited as world leaders continue to negotiate the crisis. In response to the devastating attack by Hamas, Israel imposed a "total blockade," cutting off food supplies and electricity to Gaza. The situation escalated as shops started running out of essential items. Dr. Mohammed Zaqout, Head of the Nasser Medical Complex told Reuters that a lack of power could lead to a "catastrophe", hampering patient treatment.

The United Nations appealed to Israel to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, a densely populated area with 2.3 million residents. Health officials in Gaza resorted to using ice cream freezer trucks to store the bodies of Palestinians killed by Israeli airstrikes. The shortage of safe passage and overcrowded cemeteries led to this grim solution.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas intensified, with Israel launching a fierce bombardment in response to Hamas's deadliest attack in decades. The situation has prompted the Israeli military to consider allowing Gazans to evacuate south in anticipation of a ground assault. As a result of Israeli air strikes, more than 2,300 people in Gaza, a quarter of whom are children, have died, and nearly 10,000 others are wounded. Hospitals are struggling with limited supplies and a growing number of casualties. Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas, indicating that the Gaza death toll is likely to rise.

Israel-Hamas conflict could result in massive uncertainty for the tech sector while Israel is already among the top Tech nations in the world it's the up-and-coming Palestinian tech industry that's been blown apart by the war between Israel and Hamas. Before the Israel-Hamas war Palestine's tech sector was growing at a very steady Pace despite being one of the most economically challenged regions in the world.

Israel-Palestine war | WHO: 60% killed in Gaza are women and children

My recent chat with an angry resident of Jaffa in southern Tel Aviv made me want to write this piece. I am not going to downplay the human cost and deep-seated anger many Israelis feel in the wake of the October 7 terror attack by Hamas on Israel.

While the emotions of the residents were undeniably raw and understandable, it is also crucial to approach the situation from a more nuanced perspective.

Beyond the sudden outburst of shock, anger, despair, and calls for revenge, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex issue with deep historical roots and multiple points of view.

The resident I spoke with told me that "Hamas only wants death".

It is reasonably fair to say so. The European Union and the US have already designated the Palestinian organisation as a terrorist group.

However, Hamas does not capture the entire spectrum of Palestinian sentiment.

While Hamas has been involved in acts of terrorism, one should not forget that not all Palestinians support their actions.

Conflating the actions of one group with an entire community of innocent civilians is not only unfair but also counterproductive in the pursuit of peace.

The situation in the Gaza Strip is not black and white.

The ongoing conflict has caused immense suffering on both sides, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

The tragedy of the loss of life must be acknowledged on all fronts, rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric that Gaza must be demolished.

IDF has asked the 1.1 million residents of northern Gaza to evacuate to the south. The hospitals there also received the order.

It is not unjust to raise questions to Israel about what it is setting out to do with the Palestinian civilians, whose chances of seeing another sunrise are bleak.

Many Israelis are calling for a decisive military response to the trauma they have experienced.

However, the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has shown that a military solution is not a lasting one.

It often leads to a cycle of violence and further deepens the rift between the parties involved.

The notion that "there will be no more Gaza" is a stark and uncompromising statement.

While there may be legitimate security concerns that Israel needs to address, it is imperative that the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people in Gaza are also taken into consideration.

A comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict should involve dialogue, diplomacy, and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Mind you, I am talking about the co-existence of Israel with Palestinians, not Hamas.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a matter of international concern.

While it's crucial to acknowledge the frustration that Israelis are feeling, it's equally vital to approach the issue with a focus on empathy, dialogue, and a long-term commitment to peace for all parties involved.
