Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 70 Palestinians across Gaza, reported Gaza health ministry officials on Thursday (Mar 20). As Israel resumed its bombing campaign on the Palestinian enclave, Medics said that Tel Aviv&rsquo;s strikes targeted several houses in northern and southern areas of the Gaza Strip.
<h2>Israel&rsquo;s &lsquo;last warning&rsquo;</h2>
The latest slate of strikes comes as Israel issued what it called a &ldquo;last warning&rdquo; for Palestinians to return hostages and throw Hamas from power.
Addressing the "residents of Gaza" Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz in a video said: "This is the last warning."

Trump's 'beautiful area' for Gazans? US, Israel eyeing three 'poor' African nations to resettle Palestinians

Israel has launched an investigation into reports of Palestinian civilians being used as 'human shields' by its soldiers during operations in Gaza,&nbsp;over 500 days into the Israel-Hamas war and after numerous allegations to this extent.
<h2>Israel acknowledges "reasonable suspicion"</h2>
This marks the first time that the Israeli military has acknowledged that there was a "reasonable suspicion" to believe that soldiers forced civilians to be unwilling participants in military operations.

Reports have suggested in the past that Israeli military personnel were forcing civilians to enter potentially booby-trapped houses and tunnels to ensure the troops' safety while putting the Gazans in danger.
&ldquo;In several cases, the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division opened investigations after reasonable suspicion arose regarding the use of Palestinians for military missions during the operations,&rdquo; said the IDF, as reported by CNN.

<h2>Who is under investigation?</h2>
According to the report, the IDF did not confirm the number of investigations or disclose the names of personnel being investigated. Instead, it said, &ldquo;Those investigations are still ongoing, and accordingly, other details cannot be provided at this time.&rdquo;
While the exact scope and scale of the alleged practice is not known, reports featuring testimonies of both soldiers and civilians suggest that it was widespread across the territory, especially northern Gaza, Gaza City, Khan Younis and Rafah.

<h2>What is the 'Mosquito protocol'?</h2>
In an interview with CNN last year, an Israeli soldier had fessed up to a practice commonly known as &ldquo;mosquito protocol&rdquo;.
The soldier revealed that his unit had forced a Palestinian man to enter a supposedly booby-trapped building ahead of the troops. He explained that if &ldquo;there are any booby traps, they (the civilian) will explode and not us&rdquo;.

Israel, for the first time, 'accepts' use of Palestinians as human shields in Gaza, probe on: Report

Senior Israeli officials were surprised to hear US hostage envoy Adam Boehler's remarks, in which he asserted that the United States is not &ldquo;an agent of Israel,&rdquo;, The Times of Israel reported, citing an Israeli source.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re the United States. We&rsquo;re not an agent of Israel,&rdquo; Boehler said.
Boehler, in an interview with CNN, defended his direct talks with Hamas officials after the revelation ignited an uneasy conversation between him and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer.
&ldquo;I understand the consternation and the concern. I wasn&rsquo;t upset,&rdquo; he said, sharing details about his dialogue with Dermer.
&ldquo;At the same time, we&rsquo;re the United States. We&rsquo;re not an agent of Israel. We have specific interests at play,&rdquo; he added.

<h2>'Helpful meeting'</h2>
Boehler said that he was confident a deal could be reached "within weeks" to free all hostages held by the Palestinian militant group.
"I think it was a very helpful meeting. It was very helpful to hear some back and forth," Boehler said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union."
He then said that he understood the concerns expressed by Dermer about his direct talks with Hamas but ensured that the talks emphasised on a clear goal.
"We're the United States. We're not an agent of Israel," Boehler said. "We have specific interests at play, and we did communicate back and forth."
"What I wanted to do is jump start some negotiations that were in a very fragile place. And I wanted to say to Hamas, what is the end game that you want here?"
<h2>'Nice guys'</h2>
Boehler confirmed in the interview that US President Donald Trump signed off on his talks with Hamas ahead of time.
&ldquo;I spoke with Ron, and I&rsquo;m sympathetic. He has someone that he doesn&rsquo;t know well, making direct contact with Hamas," he said.&nbsp;
"Maybe I would see them and say, &lsquo;Look, they don&rsquo;t have horns growing out of their head. They&rsquo;re actually guys like us. They&rsquo;re pretty nice guys&rsquo;,&rdquo; the US envoy added.
<h2>Hamas confirms multiple meetings with US</h2>
The political adviser to the Hamas chief, Taher Al-Nono, confirmed that multiple meetings occurred between Hamas leaders and US hostage affairs envoy Adam Boehler, according to news agency Reuters.
Nono said that the talks took place in the Qatari capital over the past week and were centred around the release of an American-Israeli dual national, who was held hostage by the Palestinian militant group in war-torn Gaza.
"Several meetings have already taken place in Doha, focusing on releasing one of the dual-nationality prisoners. We have dealt positively and flexibly, in a way that serves the interests of the Palestinian people," Nono said.
The two sides also discussed how to see through the implementation of the phased agreement aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas war.
"We informed the American delegation that we don't oppose the release of the prisoner within the framework of these talks," Nono told Reuters.
Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff told reporters at the White House last week that gaining the release of 21-year-old Edan Alexander from New Jersey, who is believed to be the last living American hostage held by Hamas in Gaza, is the United States' "top priority".

Hamas confirms multiple meetings with US on Gaza ceasefire deal

The Israeli military has confirmed it carried out an airstrike on Sunday (March 9), targeting militants who were attempting to plant an explosive device in northern Gaza.
"Earlier today, several terrorists were identified operating in proximity to IDF troops and attempting to plant an explosive device in the ground in northern Gaza," the military said. It added that an Israeli warplane "struck the terrorists."

Palestinian media reported that two individuals lost their lives in the attack, which took place in the eastern Shejaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City. While some reports suggested that artillery fire was involved, the Israeli military said that an Israeli Air Force drone conducted the strike.
<h2>Hamas pushes for truce talks</h2>
Meanwhile, Hamas reiterated its demand to move directly into negotiations for the second phase of Gaza truce. The group met with mediators in Cairo over the weekend, stressing the urgent need for humanitarian aid to enter the besieged territory "without restrictions or conditions," according to a Hamas press release.
The high-level delegation also called for "moving directly to begin negotiations for the second phase" of the deal, which is intended to pave the way for a lasting ceasefire. Hamas's demands include a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, lifting the blockade, rebuilding the territory, and financial support.

‘For attempting to plant explosive device’: Israeli strike kills two in Gaza ahead of ceasefire negotiation

International support grew on Saturday for an Arab counterproposal to US President Donald Trump's plan to take over Gaza and displace its residents, with Islamic nations endorsing it and European governments giving their backing.
Unlike the Trump plan, the Arab proposal aims to rebuild Gaza without displacing the territory's 2.4 million inhabitants, who endured more than 15 months of devastating conflict before a fragile ceasefire took effect on January 19.

The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation formally adopted the counterproposal at an emergency meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, three days after the Arab League ratified it at a summit in Cairo.
Britain, France, Germany, and Italy gave their backing in a joint statement by their foreign ministers, hailing it as a "realistic path" for rebuilding war-torn Gaza without uprooting its Palestinian inhabitants.
The OIC "adopts the plan... on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza", the Islamic bloc said in a statement.
It urged "the international community and international and regional funding institutions to swiftly provide the necessary support".
Trump triggered global outrage when he suggested the US "take over" Gaza and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East", while forcing its Palestinian inhabitants to relocate to Egypt or Jordan.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty welcomed the OIC endorsement and said he now hoped to gain support from the wider international community, including the US.
"The next step is for the plan to become an international plan through adoption by the European Union and international parties such as Japan, Russia, China and others," Abdelatty said.
"This is what we will seek and we have contact with all parties, including the American party."
The four European governments welcomed the plan's proposal for Gaza to return to the control of the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority after nearly two decades of Hamas rule.
"We are clear that Hamas must neither govern Gaza nor be a threat to Israel any more," they said in their statement.
"We commend the serious efforts of all involved stakeholders and appreciate the important signal the Arab states have sent by jointly developing this recovery and reconstruction plan," they added.
However, the Egyptian proposal has already been cold-shouldered by Israel and the United States.
It "does not meet the expectations" of Washington, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters on Thursday.
Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff gave a more positive reaction, however, calling the plan a "good-faith first step from the Egyptians".

International support grew on Saturday for an Arab counterproposal to US President Donald Trump's plan to take over Gaza and displace its residents, with Islamic nations endorsing it and European governments giving their backing. Unlike the Trump plan, the Arab proposal aims to rebuild Gaza without displacing the territory's 2.4 million inhabitants, who endured more than 15 months of devastating conflict before a fragile ceasefire took effect on January 19. With Trump&rsquo;s backing, he added, &ldquo;We can and will finish the job.&rdquo;
Rubio also described Iran as &ldquo;the single greatest source of instability in the region.&rdquo;&nbsp;

‘There can never be nuclear Iran’: Netanyahu, Rubio discuss Hamas, Trump’s Gaza plan, and Tehran’s ‘aggression’

US President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum on Monday (Feb 10), warning that "all hell" will break loose unless all Israeli hostages held in Gaza are released by Saturday (Feb 15). The warning comes as Hamas accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement and threatened to delay future prisoner exchanges. &nbsp;
<h2>What did Trump say?</h2>
Speaking at the White House, Trump said he would call for an end to the fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel if all hostages aren't returned.
The truce, which began on January 19, marked a pause in over 15 months of intense conflict in Gaza. It has already facilitated the release of five groups of Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Addressing reporters, Trump declared "as far as I'm concerned, if all of the hostages aren't returned by Saturday 12 o'clock -- I think it's an appropriate time -- I would say cancel it and all bets are off and let hell break out."
His remarks come as Hamas claimed Israel had failed to meet its commitments under the deal, including providing humanitarian aid and addressing the deaths of three Gazans during the ceasefire. &nbsp;
Earlier on Monday, Abu Ubaida, a spokesperson for Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades had announced that the next hostage release, "which was scheduled for next Saturday, February 15, 2025, will be postponed until further notice".

Ubaida said that the resumption of hostage-prisoner exchanges was "pending the (Israeli) occupation's compliance and retroactive fulfilment of the past weeks' obligations".
Later, in another statement, the Palestinian militant group Hamas said that it had intentionally declared a pause on prisoner exchange five days ahead of the next scheduled exchange. This it said was done to allow mediators ample time to pressure Israel "towards fulfilling its obligations."
"The door remains open for the prisoner exchange batch to proceed as planned, once the occupation complies," said Hamas.

<h2>Israel responds to Hamas</h2>
Responding to Hamas statements, Israel said its military was readying for "any possible scenario".
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz branded Hamas's actions a "complete violation" of the agreement and said, "I have instructed the IDF (military) to prepare at the highest level of alert for any possible scenario in Gaza."&nbsp;
Mediators are set to meet in Qatar this week to address disputes over the ceasefire's implementation and discuss subsequent phases of the deal.&nbsp;

Trump warns Hamas 'all hell' will break loose unless Israeli hostages are released on Feb 15

A day after US President Donald Trump announced his plan to take over Gaza, his administration on Wednesday (Feb 5) seemed to backtrack from his proposal. Amid global criticism of the American president's plan, Trump's Secretary of State Marco Rubio tried to placate the situation, insisting any transfer would be temporary. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt assured US citizens that their money would not fund the reconstruction of Gaza which has been battered by a war for 15 months.
On Tuesday (Feb 4) Trump declared that "The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too. We'll own it," to audible gasps during a White House press conference.&nbsp;

<h2>A 'generous move'</h2>
Facing a wave of criticism from world leaders, Palestinians, and Arab governments, among others, Trump's Secretary of State Rubio said that the idea was not meant to be "hostile" and was a "generous move &mdash; the offer to rebuild and to be in charge of the rebuilding". &nbsp;
Trump insists that "everybody loves" the plan, but White House Press Secretary Leavitt had to elaborate on Rubio's comment and reassure Americans that Washington, or rather their tax money, would not fund Gaza's reconstruction.
US involvement "does not mean boots on the ground" or that "American taxpayers will be funding this effort", said Leavitt.

<h2>'Ethnic cleansing'?</h2>
Trump's proposal was labelled an attempt at "ethnic cleansing" by the United Nations.
In a speech to a UN committee that deals with the rights of Palestinians, Secretary-General Ant&oacute;nio Guterres said, "At its essence, the exercise of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people is about the right of Palestinians to simply live as human beings in their own land".
The UN chief's spokesperson St&eacute;phane Dujarric, previewing Guterres's speech, told the press: "Any forced displacement of people is tantamount to ethnic cleansing."

As outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held his final press conference Thursday (Jan 16), there was chaos as the State Department employees removed a reporter after he accused the top diplomat of allowing &ldquo;genocide&rdquo; in Gaza.
Max Blumenthal, a journalist with Grayzone News, reportedly abandoned the press conference upon being asked to do so by state department aides. Meanwhile, officials dragged independent journalist Sam Husseini out amid ruckus. Both journalists had blasted Blinken for not reaching the Gaza ceasefire deal sooner.
"Why did you keep the bombs flowing when we had a deal in May?,&rdquo; Blumenthal asked, as quoted by New York Post. &ldquo;Why did you allow my friends homes in Gaza to be destroyed?&rdquo;

With just three days left for the second truce deal between Israel and Hamas in the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli health ministry on Thursday (Jan 16) issued new guidelines for hospitals that would receive the hostages released from Hamas' captivity.
Citing a top official from the health ministry, a report by The Times of Israel said that the protocol differed significantly from the one that was in place during the ceasefire deal in November 2023.
"There is a risk that returning hostages may develop Refeeding syndrome," the ministry's General Medicine Division Head, Dr Hagar Mizrahi, said.

The guidelines say that the released hostages would be required to stay in hospital for a minimum of four days.
Mizrahi pointed out that some of the hostages released in the November 2023 truce deal regretted leaving (the hospital) earlier than recommended, and extending the stay could better support their recovery.
The official also said that there would be documentation of and collection of forensic evidence from the atrocities the hostages have suffered.

The Israeli military said on Wednesday that its troops had recovered the body of a hostage in Gaza and brought it back to Israel following a "complex and difficult operation".
In a statement, the military said: "The troops located and recovered the body of hostage Youssef al-Zayadna from an underground tunnel in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip and returned his body to Israel."
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had announced that the remains of Zayadna's son, Hamza, had also been brought to Israel.
The military clarified that the son's body had not been recovered, although "findings were located related to Hamza... which raise serious concerns for his life".
Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani said in an online briefing that troops carried out what he described as a "complex and difficult special operation" to retrieve the body.
The father's body was "brought to Israel for an identification process, after which we confirmed his identity and notified his family. We are currently investigating the circumstances of his death," Shoshani said.
The Arab Bedouin father and son were seized by Palestinian militants from Kibbutz Holit near the Gaza border during the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.
Kidnapped with them were Hamza's sister and brother, who were released during a week-long truce in November 2023.&nbsp;
During their attack, the Hamas terrorists took 251 people hostage. Of those, 95 remain in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

The 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to Israeli official figures.
Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed 45,936 people in Gaza, the majority of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory's health ministry, which the United Nations considers reliable.

IDF says body of one hostage retrieved from Gaza

&nbsp; An Israeli raid targeting Hamas militants near the Kamal Adwan Hospital on Friday (Dec 27) has put the last functioning major medical facility in northern Gaza out of service, alleged the World Health Organization (WHO). &nbsp;
<h2>Key hospital or Hamas lair?</h2>
According to the WHO, critical hospital departments were severely damaged during the operation. "Initial reports indicate that some key departments were severely burnt and destroyed during the raid," it said in a statement on X.

The WHO expressed concern for the 60 health workers and 25 critically ill patients, including those on ventilators, who reportedly remain in the hospital. Patients in moderate to severe condition have been evacuated to the non-functional Indonesian Hospital, it said, adding that it was "deeply concerned for their safety."
The UN health body described the ongoing hostilities as catastrophic for Gaza's healthcare system, stating, "The systematic dismantling of the health system in Gaza is a death sentence for tens of thousands of Palestinians in need of health care." &nbsp;
However, the Israeli military alleged that the hospital was being used by Hamas as a "key stronghold for terrorist organisations".
<h2>Conflicting claims</h2>
The Israeli military, in a statement, claimed that the hospital was being used as a hideout for "terrorist operatives" since operations in northern Gaza intensified in October. &nbsp;
Tel Aviv said that before launching the operation near the Kamal Adwan Hospital, its troops "facilitated the secure evacuation of civilians, patients, and medical personnel".

Hamas denied allegations that its operatives were present in the hospital and accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting the facility. In a statement, the group said, "The enemy's lies about the hospital aim to justify the heinous crime committed by the occupation army today, involving the evacuation and burning of all hospital departments as part of a plan for extermination and forced displacement." &nbsp;

Tel Aviv, Israel
The wife of an American hostage held by Palestinian militant organisation Hamas in Gaza has pleaded with negotiators to bring her husband back. Aviva Siegel, a former hostage herself, reacted to a video released by the Gaza-based group in April, saying, “I just saw the picture. He looks terrible. His bones are out, and you can see that he’s lost a lot of weight.”
Siegel told US news outlet New York Post that she was worried about “what kind of Keith Siegel (her husband) that we’re going to get back.” “He doesn’t look like himself. And I’m just so worried about him, because so [many] days and minutes have passed since that video that we received,” she added.
She added that she was also worried about all hostages, as the conditions that they are facing are the worst any human can ever go through.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Friday (December 19), that they had destroyed three tunnel routes in the northern Gaza city of Beit Lahia. According to the military, these tunnels spanned a combined length of 7.5 kilometres.
As per media reports, the tunnels were uncovered by the IDF's Kfir Brigade, operating under the command of the 162nd Division. During the operation, soldiers recovered military equipment that had been seized by Hamas fighters during the attacks on 7 October, 2023. Maps of Israeli communities near the Gaza border were also found, as per Jerusalem Post.
<h2>Israeli newspaper report accuses soldiers of randomly killing Gaza civilians</h2>
In another development, an article published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, citing anonymous soldiers, accused Israeli forces of carrying out random killings of Palestinian civilians in the Netzarim Corridor in Gaza. The corridor has been designated as a military zone.
The report suggested that commanders were given exceptional authority in Gaza, enabling or ordering the killing of unarmed civilians, including women and children.

The IDF firmly rejected these claims. "All activities and operations conducted by IDF forces in Gaza, including in the Netzarim Corridor, adhere to structured combat procedures, plans, and operational orders approved by the highest ranks in the army," the military told AFP.
IDF said that all strikes in the area (of Netzarim) are conducted in accordance with the mandatory procedures and protocols, including targets that are struck in an urgent time frame due to essential operational circumstances where ground forces face immediate threats". The military added that any concerns regarding potential deviations from orders or ethical standards are thoroughly investigated.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has caused significant casualties. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 45,206 Palestinians have been killed, and 107,512 injured since Israel began its military offensive on 7 October, 2023.

In a separate development, Sweden has announced it will stop funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The country said that it will redirect its support to Gaza through other humanitarian channels, Swedish Aid Minister Benjamin Dousa told broadcaster TV4.
Dousa said that Sweden would consider organisations such as the UN World Food Programme to provide aid. The decision follows repeated accusations by Israel that UNRWA was complicit in Hamas’ attacks on 7 October, 2023, which marked the start of the 13-month-long conflict. Gaza
Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that his country's forces would be free to act in the Gaza Strip even after its war with Hamas ends.
"After eliminating Hamas's military and governmental capabilities in Gaza, Israel would have security control over Gaza with complete freedom of action" for the Israeli military, Katz said in a post on X, noting that it was his own "position".
Katz said that Israel's future control over Gaza should be "exactly like in Judea and Samaria", the biblical names for the West Bank which Israel has occupied since 1967 and where its forces conduct frequent raids.
The question of Gaza's post-war governance has remained unresolved, more than a year since Israel vowed to crush Hamas in retaliation for its October 7, 2023 attack.
Katz's predecessor Yoav Gallant had voiced firm opposition to any prolonged Israeli control of Gaza, from which Israel withdrew troops and settlers in 2005 after decades of direct rule.

In May, then as defence minister, Gallant said that he would "not agree to the establishment of an Israeli military administration in Gaza".
"Israel must not have civilian control over the Gaza Strip," Gallant said at the time, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to devise a post-war plan for the territory.

At least 18 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Saturday, medics said, while the Israeli military said it targeted gunmen operating from shelters and aid storages. At least 10 people were killed in an airstrike near the municipality building in Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip where people gathered to receive aid, medics said. Casualties were being carried by foot, on rickshaws and private cars from the site of the attack to the hospital, medics said. The strike killed the head of the Hamas-run administrative committee in central Gaza, a Hamas source said. The Israeli military was looking into the report, a spokesperson said. Earlier, Israeli aircraft struck militants and weapon caches near an aid warehouse, the military said, after gunmen had fired rockets into Israel from there. At least seven people were killed in that attack, Palestinian medics said, including a woman and her baby. It was unclear whether any of the other people killed were fighters. The military said it had taken precautions to reduce the risk of harm to civilians. A separate strike in Gaza City killed a local journalist, medics said. The military was looking into the report, a spokesperson said. The war in Gaza began when the Palestinian militant group Hamas stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200, mostly civilians, people and taking more than 250 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israeli authorities. Israel then launched an air, sea and land offensive that has killed at least 44,000 people, mostly civilians, according to authorities in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, displaced nearly the entire population and left much of the enclave in ruins.
