“I never thought about it from that perspective,” Biden said. “What would we say if that happened in another democracy around the world?”

The discussion between the two leaders was said to be about the January 6 attack on the US Capitol when thousands of supporters of the former president and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump reportedly tried to stop lawmakers from certifying Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential elections.&nbsp;

While Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) has endorsed the strengthened bill, the key left-leaning members of Macron’s Renaissance Party and allied factions have said that they can no longer support it and some even threatened to resign.&nbsp;

However, since the bill has passed, none of those threats have immediately materialised.&nbsp;

The initial proposal by the Macron government would have made it simpler for migrants working in sectors that lack labour to get a residency permit, while also making it easier for them to expel illegal migrants.&nbsp;

However, in a bid to gain support from the conservatives, they agreed to water down some of the residency permit measures. The new bill which was passed would also delay migrants’ access to welfare benefits, including those for children and housing allowances by at least several years.&nbsp;

France has long prided itself on one of the most generous welfare systems in the world, and grants payments to foreign residents and helps them pay rent or care for their children with monthly contributions of a few hundred euros.&nbsp;

The far right, however, has recently argued that those measures should be reserved for French citizens only. Therefore, the recently passed bill effectively delays access to housing benefits for unemployed non-European Union migrants by at least five years.&nbsp;

The new bill also introduces a range of restrictions including migration quotas, making it more difficult for children of immigrants to become French citizens while saying that dual nationals who have been convicted for serious crimes against the police could lose French citizenship.

He also highlighted that France and Israel shared terrorism as their "common enemy".

"France is ready for the international coalition against Daesh in which we are taking part for operations in Iraq and Syria to also fight against Hamas," he told reporters, referring to Islamic State.

Macron warned against the potential risks of regional violence while also stating that the battle against Hamas "must be without mercy but not without rules".

Though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not directly comment on Macron's proposal but said the fight was a battle between the "axis of evil" and "the free world".

He added that the battle must be fought without "enlarging this conflict."

Macron's visit was aimed at preventing an escalation of the war, freeing hostages, guaranteeing Israel's security and working towards a two-state solution, said the presidential advisers. He will push for a humanitarian ceasefire, they added.

“Bangladesh is progressively retrieving its place on the world stage,” said the French president as&nbsp;he arrived in Dhaka on Sunday night (Sep 10) after wrapping up meetings at the G20 Summit.&nbsp;

He also praised Bangladesh’s “tremendous success,” as a rapidly growing economy with the world’s eighth most populous nation of over 170 million people.

“Based on democratic principles and the rule of law, in a region facing new imperialism, we want to propose a third way – with no intention to bully our partners or to lead them to an unsustainable scheme,” Macron told Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.&nbsp;

He added, “All our strategy is focused on strengthening the independence and the strategic autonomy of our friends to give them the ‘freedom of sovereignty’.”

During his trip, Macron also visited a memorial for Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, before returning to Paris.

The two leaders also discussed a “commitment” from the country’s Biman airline to purchase 10 A350s from European aircraft maker Airbus. The contract which has been called “an important point” by Macron is worth as much as $3.2 billion.&nbsp;

French President Macron visits Bangladesh to ‘consolidate’ Paris’ Indo-Pacific push

French President Emmanuel Macron Friday (July 28) made a short yet historic visit to the island nation of Sri Lanka. The president spent less than two hours in the country after arriving at 11:30 PM (local time). It was the first visit by a French president to the South Asian country.

Macron made the stop as he was flying back home after visiting the Pacific island nations of Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. He also visited the French Overseas Territory of New Caledonia.

<h2>Meeting with the Lankan president</h2>

Macron held a meeting with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the airport itself, where the former hailed historic ties between the two nations.&nbsp;

They reportedly talked about the rule of law in the Indo-Pacific region and Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery. 
 
“This is a historic visit," the Elysee said in a statement.

Another focus of the talks was Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring, as Beijing, the main creditor of the country, has already agreed to restructure its debt to the debt-ridden country.

After the meeting, Macron posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Sri Lanka and France share the same goal for an open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

It is going to be the first visit by a French president to Sri Lanka,&nbsp;although, Macron’s visit had not been officially announced. The French President will first travel to Vanuatu on July 27 before leaving for Papua New Guinea, reported News First.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape invited President Macron during a meeting in Port Moresby on June 5 with Walid Fouque, Special Adviser for Asia and the Pacific to President, according to Papua New Guinea Today.&nbsp;

Macron is scheduled to reach Port Moresby at 11 am on Friday.&nbsp;His visit includes a meeting with Governor-General Bob Dadae, and a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Marape, followed by a bilateral meeting and the signing of various agreements, reported Papua New Guinea Today.&nbsp;

Macron’s visit aims to strengthen the bilateral relations between France and Papua New Guinea.

Moreover, Macron is expected to return from Papua New Guinea on July 28 night to July 29 morning.&nbsp;

France is part of the group of countries that announced a common platform for talks among bilateral creditors to coordinate the restructuring of Sri Lanka’s debt, News First reported.

According to reports, hundreds&nbsp;defied a police ban,&nbsp;on Saturday (July 8) to hold&nbsp;a march against violence by the country’s police which was supposed to take place in central Paris to honour the 24-year-old Black man who died in police custody in 2016. This comes days after France was rocked by six nights of riots and unrest over the killing of a 17-year-old teenager by a police officer at a traffic stop.

<h2>Why did the French&nbsp;officials ban Paris march?</h2>

A report by Reuters said&nbsp;that hundreds of protesters defied the ban on a march&nbsp;for&nbsp;Adama Traore. The decision to ban the planned protest called by the victim Traore’s family on Saturday in central Paris’ Place de la Republique was announced by the French capital city’s police department which cited risks to public order and “context of tensions”.&nbsp; 
 
Subsequently,&nbsp;the crowd gathered at&nbsp;Place de la Republique was dispersed by the police and seen marching towards&nbsp;Boulevard Magenta instead, where several hundred people were reportedly marching peacefully.&nbsp;

This comes after the initial march was to take place in Beaumont-sur-Oise, another Paris suburb, where Traore died in 2016. The ban was upheld by a French court, on Friday, which prompted the organisers to change the location of the march to central Paris instead.&nbsp;

Traore’s older sister, Assa Traore, after Friday’s court decision took to Twitter and confirmed the change of location and said, “The government has decided to add fuel to the fire (and) not to respect the death of my little brother.”&nbsp;

The head of the Paris police, Laurent Nuñez, said that the march would “likely to attract radical elements with a view to committing acts of violence; the reasons which led the prefect of Val-d’Oise to ban the gathering.”&nbsp;

The circumstances under which the 24-year-old Black Frenchman died in police custody were similar to the killing of George Floyd in the United States. The march was to take place in memory of Traore who his family allege was pinned to the ground by officers and died of asphyxiation.&nbsp;

The policeman accused, according to prosecutors, acknowledged firing a lethal shot at Nahel, and is currently under formal investigation for voluntary homicide.&nbsp;

However, the officer’s lawyer reportedly said that the shot was aimed at the driver’s leg but was bumped when the car drove off, leading him to shoot towards his chest but did not intend to kill the teenager.&nbsp;

However, the French foreign ministry, on Saturday said that the remarks made by the UN committee are “excessive” and “unfounded,” adding that “Any ethnic profiling by law enforcement is banned in France…the struggle against excesses in racial profiling has intensified.”&nbsp;

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday urged his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi to stop backing Russia's efforts in the invasion of Ukraine.

Macron asked Raisi to "immediately end" Tehran's support to Russia in the war against Ukraine, including the supply of drones, said the Elysee Palace.

In a telephonic conversation, the French President highlighted the serious "security and humanitarian consequences" of Iran's drone deliveries "and urged Tehran to immediately end the support it thus gives to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine", the statement said.

The call by the French President came a day after White House national security spokesman John Kirby said that Iran was sending materials to Russia to build a drone factory on its territory.

<h2>Drone factory 'could be fully operational early next year': Kirby</h2>

John Kirby said that Russia was importing materials from Iran to build the drone factory which "could be fully operational early next year".

The White House released a satellite image of the location of the forthcoming plant in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, which was based some 900 kilometres (560 miles) east of Moscow.

"The Russia-Iran military partnership appears to be deepening," Kirby said in a statement, citing US intelligence information.

The White House said it would release a new government advisory to assist businesses and governments "to ensure they are not inadvertently contributing to Iran's (drone) programme".

According to Washington, Russia has received hundreds of attack drones and related equipment from Iran to aid Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

As per US data, Kirby said, the drones "are built in Iran, shipped across the Caspian Sea and then used operationally by Russian forces against Ukraine."

"Russia has been using Iranian UAVs in recent weeks to strike Kyiv and terrorise the Ukrainian population," he added, referring to unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones.

Washington issued the alert on what it feels are Moscow's efforts to create Iranian drones itself.

"We have information that Russia is receiving materials from Iran needed to build a UAV manufacturing plant inside Russia," Kirby said.

According to the White House, in turn, Iran is seeking to purchase Su-35 fighter jets, attack helicopters, radars, and YAK-130 combat trainer aircraft from Russia.

"We will continue to impose sanctions on the actors involved in the transfer of Iranian military equipment to Russia for use in Ukraine," AFP quoted Kirby as saying.

Iran has repeatedly denied the allegations made by the United States of sending military supplies to Russia during its war against Ukraine.

Despite the&nbsp;approval by the constitutional court, the unions vowed to oppose the changes, including raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.&nbsp;The French court on Friday approved President Emmanuel Macron's controversial pension reform plan to raise the retirement age. The decision was validated by the nine-member Constitutional Council after almost three months of protests across the country.&nbsp;

The council was of the view that the government's actions were in line with the constitution and that the retirement age should be raised.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;reports, the court rejected six minor proposals, which included forcing large companies to publish data regarding how many employees above 55 were working for them and creating a special contract for older workers.&nbsp;

Additionally, the council rejected a proposal put forth by the leftist parties which sought to organise a referendum on the pension reform.&nbsp;

<h2>Stage set for another round of clashes</h2>

The decision, however, has set the stage for another round of protests from the opposition as well as the common citizens.&nbsp;Unions made it clear that they were organising mass protests for Labour Day on May 1, while some cities saw violence erupt after the verdict was declared.

French hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melencho vowed that the fight against Macron's reform plan would continue despite the court's decision.&nbsp;

"The fight continues and must gather force," said Melecho, leader of the France Unbowed (LFI) party.&nbsp;

It added, Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang told his Belarusian counterpart Sergei Aleinik that Beijing is willing to work with Minsk to deepen their political ties during a phone conversation, on Friday. Furthermore, Beijing also said it would help Minsk maintain national stability and support Belarus against “external forces” interfering in its internal affairs and imposing “illegal” unilateral sanctions against the country.&nbsp;

This comes months after the presidents of the two countries announced an “all-weather” strategic partnership. Amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Belarusian president has reportedly supported Moscow. Belarus, which shares a border with Russia is said to be both financially and politically dependent on the country.&nbsp;

Three men were convicted by an anti-terror court in France late Friday (February 17) over a plot to attack President Emmanuel Macron in 2018. The men were part of a Facebook group called the "Barjols" and were convicted of conspiracy to commit a terrorist act after the court heard how they discussed using a ceramic knife to stab Macron at a World War I commemoration, according to a report by the news agency AFP. The accused are expected to file appeals.&nbsp;

Barjols was formed in 2017 in the aftermath of several deadly attacks in France, including one at the Charlie Hebdo magazine and the Bataclan concert hall in Paris.

Jean-Pierre Bouyer, a former mechanic, was handed the longest sentence of four years in prison, with one year suspended, which is well below the maximum jail term of 10 years for the offence. Bouyer, 66, was arrested on November 6, 2018, with three others in the eastern Moselle region. The AFP report said that cops found a commando-style knife and an army vest in his car as well as three firearms at his home.

Since the beginning of the trial last month, the anti-terror court heard details of the group's alcohol-fuelled meetings, their racist online discussions of migration, their fear of a civil war, and their hatred of President Emmanuel Macron. The case also raised questions about the point at which online conspiracies and violent fantasies become criminal, with defence lawyers claiming the prosecution lacked evidence of any real desire to act, the news agency reported.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Jean-Pierre Bouyer's lawyer Olivia Ronen said she regretted that the judges did not recognise the case was blown out of proportion and there was no hard evidence to convict.

"The court ended up a bit in the middle of the road," fellow defence lawyer Francois Ormillien said, highlighting the guilty verdicts but "extremely light" sentences.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said that he was tricked by a prankster pretending to be French President Emmanuel Macron last week when a missile strike killed two in a village near the Ukrainian border.

According to Reuters news agency, the call, which lasted for more than seven minutes, was shared on the internet by Russian comedians Vovan and Lexus, in which Duda can be heard speaking in English to the caller, who attempts to speak in a French accent.

Duda’s office later confirmed the incident on Tuesday in a tweet, saying the president realised “the unusual way” the conversation was taking place that it was probably a hoax and hung up.

“After the missile explosion in Przewodow, during the ongoing calls with heads of state and government, a person claiming to be French President Emmanuel Macron was connected.

"During the call, President Andrzej Duda realised from the unusual way the interlocutor conducted the conversation that there might have been an attempted hoax attempt and ended the conversation."

The authorities have now begun to investigate how the callers managed to get in contact with him through regular services, the statement said.

At that time, Duda held numerous calls following the missile strike that raised fears of a significant escalation between NATO allies and Russia.

This is the second time that the Russian comedians— Vovan and Lexus—have managed to get through Duda.

EU&nbsp;leaders recognised that, inside the&nbsp;bloc, the needs and energy mixes of the&nbsp;bloc's 27 nations varied widely.

Some, in the east, were deeply dependent on Russian&nbsp;gas, while others such as Spain and Portugal found themselves less connected to the rest of Europe in terms of supply lines.

"It's a bit tricky," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, explaining that it would fall on private companies across Europe that have existing contracts to buy&nbsp;gas.

Summit discussions on the issue were very technical and dragged out because, as Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte put it, it involves "literally thousands of contracts, hundreds of parties and also has a very big difference between regions, between member states".

The&nbsp;Commission&nbsp;has been told to come back to leaders with a "comprehensive and ambitious plan" on how to phase out Russian coal and&nbsp;gas&nbsp;while not exacerbating price hikes by the end of May.

Short-term measures such as energy tax cuts and price capping are to be looked at -- but with the proviso that the fundamentals of market trading were not undercut.

EU&nbsp;officials admitted that, even with alternative&nbsp;gas&nbsp;sources being hunted for, Europe faced a very tight market and supply risks -- especially with the debate over expanding sanctions to Russian&nbsp;gas&nbsp;still kicking around.

They predicted that&nbsp;EU&nbsp;leaders would soon have to put forward measures to encourage dampening demand -- something that could be felt by European households next winter as heating bills shoot up.

Turkey’s state-controlled top religious authority has conditionally endorsed usury in a ruling that is likely to fuel debate about the concept of Islamic finance and could weaken President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s efforts to garner religious soft power by projecting Turkey as a leader defending Muslim causes.

The ruling issued by the Directorate of Religious Affairs or Diyanet that is part of Mr. Erdogan’s office stated that interest-based home loans were exempted from the 1,400-year-old ban on interest as a form of usury, provided they were extended by a Turkish state bank for the purchase of real estate in a government housing project.

The ruling is widely being seen as serving the interests of Mr. Erdogan’s government rather than a reform of Islam.

“The fatwa is likely to be a hot discussion for a number of weeks or months… We’ll have to see if the fatwa will really increase Islamic mortgage markets. I assume that is the main reason why they made such a controversial fatwa… It will strengthen those opposed to Islamic finance,” said Indonesian Islamic finance scholar Fauziah Rizki Yuniarti.

The fatwa was issued in the wake of reports that Mr. Erdogan had pressured commercial banks to continue granting cheap loans to boost the construction industry. Responsible for the construction of affordable housing, the government’s Housing Development Administration has become an important driver of the Turkish economy that has fuelled an increase in home sales.

The fatwa came days before Mr. Erdogan rattled financial markets by reverting for the first time in two months to his tirade against high interest rates that he asserts bankrupt businesses and fuel inflation.&nbsp;

In a surprise move, Mr. Erdogan appointed in November a new central bank governor and promised to adhere to more orthodox monetary policies that would include higher interest rates in a bid to stem the slide of the Turkish lira.

The fatwa, much like Mr. Erdogan’s hesitancy to criticise China’s brutal crackdown on Turkic Muslims in its north-western province of Xinjiang is likely to cast doubt on Turkey's religious soft power efforts that involve not only voicing support for Muslim causes but also the construction of mosques in far-flung places across the globe as well as efforts to shape the religious and political beliefs of Turkish diaspora communities in Europe.

Turkish diplomats are likely to use the fatwa to counter mounting criticism in Europe from French President Emmanuel Macron and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz who have been leading a crackdown on political Islam and pointing fingers at Turkey because it supports groups like the Muslim Brotherhood.

After swiping insults in recent months, Messrs. Macron and Erdogan have sought to dial down tensions. Mr. Macron last week responded positively to a New Year message in which Mr. Erdogan expressed condolences for several violent attacks in France last year.

The message was part of Turkish efforts to take the sharp edge off its multiple regional disputes that involve European nations as well as Israel and Saudi Arabia. The moves were in anticipation of US President-elect Joe Biden taking office and in advance of European Union and NATO summits that could censor Turkey.

“Turkey is an ally, that in many ways... is not acting as an ally should and this is a very, very significant challenge for us and we’re very clear-eyed about it,” said Anthony Blinken, Mr. Biden’s nominee for Secretary of State, during his Senate confirmation hearing on Monday.

Left Party member of parliament Sevim Dagdelen charged that “it is fatal for the government to negotiate the opening of private schools in Germany while the Turkish autocrat drives the critical intelligentsia of his country into prison or exile.”

The school controversy came amid a heated debate about a plan to train imams of the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB), one of Germany’s largest Muslim associations that maintains close ties to Mr. Erdogan’s religious affairs directorate.

The training would compete with a similar course at the University of Osnabruck that has been endorsed by Germany’s Council of Muslims whose 15-20,000 members include Muslims of German and Arab as well as Turkish descent.

The government has pressured DITIB, which operates close to 900 of Germany’s 2,600 mosques and employs 1,100 Turkish-funded and trained imams, to opt for German-educated clerics who in contrast to their Turkish counterparts are fluent in German.

The government stopped subsidizing DITIB in 2018 while Germany’s intelligence service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, reclassified the group as a nationalist rather than a religious organisation.

Turkey’s state-controlled top religious authority has conditionally endorsed usury in a ruling that is likely to fuel debate about the concept of Islamic finance and could weaken President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s efforts to garner religious soft power by projecting Turkey as a leader defending Muslim causes.

The ruling issued by the Directorate of Religious Affairs or Diyanet that is part of Mr. Erdogan’s office stated that interest-based home loans were exempted from the 1,400-year-old ban on interest as a form of usury, provided they were extended by a Turkish state bank for the purchase of real estate in a government housing project. The ruling is widely being seen as serving the interests of Mr. Erdogan’s government rather than a reform of Islam. “The fatwa is likely to be a hot discussion for a number of weeks or months… We’ll have to see if the fatwa will really increase Islamic mortgage markets. I assume that is the main reason why they made such a controversial fatwa… It will strengthen those opposed to Islamic finance,” said Indonesian Islamic finance scholar Fauziah Rizki Yuniarti. The fatwa was issued in the wake of reports that Mr. Erdogan had pressured commercial banks to continue granting cheap loans to boost the construction industry. Responsible for the construction of affordable housing, the government’s Housing Development Administration has become an important driver of the Turkish economy that has fuelled an increase in home sales. The fatwa came days before Mr. Erdogan rattled financial markets by reverting for the first time in two months to his tirade against high interest rates that he asserts bankrupt businesses and fuel inflation. In a surprise move, Mr. Erdogan appointed in November a new central bank governor and promised to adhere to more orthodox monetary policies that would include higher interest rates in a bid to stem the slide of the Turkish lira. The fatwa, much like Mr. Erdogan’s hesitancy to criticise China’s brutal crackdown on Turkic Muslims in its north-western province of Xinjiang is likely to cast doubt on Turkey's religious soft power efforts that involve not only voicing support for Muslim causes but also the construction of mosques in far-flung places across the globe as well as efforts to shape the religious and political beliefs of Turkish diaspora communities in Europe. Turkish diplomats are likely to use the fatwa to counter mounting criticism in Europe from French President Emmanuel Macron and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz who have been leading a crackdown on political Islam and pointing fingers at Turkey because it supports groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. After swiping insults in recent months, Messrs. Macron and Erdogan have sought to dial down tensions. Mr. Macron last week responded positively to a New Year message in which Mr. Erdogan expressed condolences for several violent attacks in France last year. The message was part of Turkish efforts to take the sharp edge off its multiple regional disputes that involve European nations as well as Israel and Saudi Arabia. The moves were in anticipation of US President-elect Joe Biden taking office and in advance of European Union and NATO summits that could censor Turkey. “Turkey is an ally, that in many ways... is not acting as an ally should and this is a very, very significant challenge for us and we’re very clear-eyed about it,” said Anthony Blinken, Mr. Biden’s nominee for Secretary of State, during his Senate confirmation hearing on Monday. A Turkish plan to open three schools in Germany has run into opposition from conservative and left-wing politicians. Turkey argues that the schools would be responding to community demands that students have an opportunity to opt for Turkish as an elective alongside other foreign languages. Markus Blume, general secretary of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), the sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), asserted that “we don’t want Erdogan schools in Germany.” Left Party member of parliament Sevim Dagdelen charged that “it is fatal for the government to negotiate the opening of private schools in Germany while the Turkish autocrat drives the critical intelligentsia of his country into prison or exile.” The school controversy came amid a heated debate about a plan to train imams of the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB), one of Germany’s largest Muslim associations that maintains close ties to Mr. Erdogan’s religious affairs directorate. The training would compete with a similar course at the University of Osnabruck that has been endorsed by Germany’s Council of Muslims whose 15-20,000 members include Muslims of German and Arab as well as Turkish descent. The government has pressured DITIB, which operates close to 900 of Germany’s 2,600 mosques and employs 1,100 Turkish-funded and trained imams, to opt for German-educated clerics who in contrast to their Turkish counterparts are fluent in German. The government stopped subsidizing DITIB in 2018 while Germany’s intelligence service, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, reclassified the group as a nationalist rather than a religious organisation.
