Serie A: Lazio's Patric given four-match ban for biting Lecce's Donati

Tension is mounting at the bottom of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League </a>as the fight to avoid relegation heads towards a dramatic conclusion.

With just five games left, rock bottom Norwich are seven points from safety and are sliding towards the Championship.

Bournemouth and Aston Villa, who currently fill the remaining two places in the relegation zone, are locked in a four-team battle for survival with fellow strugglers Watford and West Ham.&nbsp;

AFP Sport takes a closer look at the teams scrapping to preserve their top-flight status:

<h2>Bournemouth</h2>

Thrashed 5-2 at Manchester United on Saturday, Eddie Howe's side are in free-fall after an eight-game winless run featuring five successive defeats.

The second bottom Cherries, one point from safety, face Tottenham, Leicester and Manchester City in their next three games.

That sequence that will surely determine whether Bournemouth can extend their five-season stay in the top-flight for another year.

Bournemouth's lack of goals has been a huge part of their downfall, with the starting line-up at Old Trafford managing just eight between them so far this season.

"Games are running out. If we're going to stay in the division, we're going to have to start picking up points," Bournemouth winger Junior Stanislas said.

"We'll have no excuses. We can't keep talking. It's time for action.

"There's no reason why from now until the end of the season we can't pick points up."

<h2>Aston Villa</h2>

A wretched run of nine matches without a win has left third bottom Villa one point from safety.

Dubious pre-season investment in several underwhelming signings have left Villa relying on captain Jack Grealish to inspire their survival bid.

But Dean Smith's side have lost three of their five games since the restart and still have to face Manchester United and Arsenal before a potential final-day shootout with West Ham.

They could count themselves unfortunate not to have secured what would have been a point at Anfield in Sunday's 2-0 defeat against champions Liverpool.

That obdurate display offered hope that Villa could still avoid an immediate return to the Championship, but Smith knows they will have to be more ruthless to achieve that aim.

"I don't want to be a valiant loser, we're scrapping for points," Smith said.

"To out-shoot Liverpool at home at Anfield, in terms of efforts on goal, it's excellent, but we need to take our opportunities. We never found the quality in the final third they did."

<h2>Watford</h2>

Saturday's 3-0 drubbing at Chelsea condemned Watford to a third consecutive loss, leaving them perilously positioned one point above the bottom three.

Nigel Pearson's fourth bottom team have not won just their stunning 3-0 success against Liverpool on February 29.

After five years in the top-flight, the Hornets, who face Manchester City and Arsenal in their last two games, could find their fate settled by Tuesday's home clash with Norwich and a visit to West Ham on July 17.

"The important thing is we understand our situation, that we don't fear it," said Pearson, whose men have managed just two goals in their last five games.

"We need to show fighting spirit, and we also need to have the ability to still make good decisions."

<h2>West Ham</h2>

Sitting four clear of the relegation zone in 16th place, West Ham are in the best position to stay up thanks to their surprise 3-2 win over Chelsea last week.

Twice blowing the lead in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Newcastle was a setback in their survival bid, but David Moyes' side have control of their own destiny.

West Ham have now lost 24 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season, more than any other side.

But with games against Norwich, Watford and Aston Villa to come, their forward Michail Antonio is confident of beating the drop.

"The mindset for our next few games is that we want three points from each of them, and that's what we believe we can get," said Antonio, whose club have not been in the Championship since 2012.

"Now we've managed to show our attacking form and we are scoring goals, we need to shore up our back as well."

Tension mounts in Premier League relegation battle

The match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> saw a moment where Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min confronted the latter while shouting and shoving his shoulder before being separated by teammates in what was a furious row on Monday.

The usually calm Son responded angrily and charged towards Lloris before being kept apart by teammates Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko as the altercation threatened to boil over. The French goalkeeper was furious after Son failed to close down a loose ball in the midfield before Everton attacked the goal through Richarlison.&nbsp;

"Let's be honest, we are in a situation we are not happy with so we have to fight, to make sure we all go in the same direction. Most important is to stay focused on the team. We can only do it as a team. When you play a season like this one it's very easy to fall apart but we showed we are still together. There is no problem at all. Whereas, when asked about the face-off, manager Jose Mourinho was “delighted” as it showed a desire to win. In a typical Mourinho style, the Portuguese said a team of nice boys can only win the Fair Play Cup, which he has no interest in winning.

"I asked them to demand more from each other and put colleagues under pressure. It was the situation of the first half where an amazing kid, a team boy like Sonny, that the captain thought 'you have to do more'.

Antoine Griezmann answered his critics in style on Sunday by scoring with a sensational chip as Barcelona thrashed Villarreal 4-1 to keep their faint La Liga title hopes alive.&nbsp;

After the humiliation of being brought on in the 90th minute against his former club Atletico Madrid, Griezmann was back in the starting line-up at La Ceramica and repaid the faith with a stunning goal, teed up by Lionel Messi.&nbsp;

"It was the kind of goal only great players can score," said Barcelona coach Quique Setien. "He played a spectacular match."

Messi also laid on a curling Luis Suarez shot into the top corner after Gerard Moreno cancelled out a Pau Torres own-goal that had put Barca in front. Ansu Fati then added a fourth late on.&nbsp;

An impressive victory for Setien's side reduces the gap back to four points behind Real Madrid, who earlier ground out another 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames, with a Sergio Ramos penalty proving the difference.

Madrid's resilient performance, and their third 1-0 victory in a row, offered a stark contrast to a goal-fest from Barcelona that was certainly easier on the eye but instructive on the title race too.&nbsp;

An end-to-end contest, full of chances for both sides, showed Messi, Suarez and Griezmann at their free-flowing best yet the defence was opened up with ease by Villarreal, who might have scored more.&nbsp;

Madrid's discipline and organisation has made them firm favourites with four games remaining.&nbsp;

"We needed this match a while ago," admitted Setien. "We have to keep adding points and we'll see what happens."

Griezmann had experienced his lowest moment since joining Barcelona on Tuesday in the draw against Atletico but this was the perfect response.&nbsp;

He celebrated his goal by sharing a warm embrace with Messi.&nbsp;

Villarreal looked a difficult opponent after winning five games out of six since the restart, a run that has put them in in touching distance of the top four.&nbsp;

This defeat leaves them three points behind Sevilla, who play Eibar on Monday.&nbsp;

The first half was perhaps the most entertaining in La Liga since the restart, with four goals and chances for two or three more.&nbsp;

Barca were ahead within three minutes, Torres diverting Jordi Alba's cross into his own net under pressure from Griezmann at the near post.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

<h2>- Ramos on the spot -</h2>

But Villarreal were level 11 minutes later as a superb pass from Samuel Chukwueze sent Paco Alcacer scampering in down the right and he did brilliantly to switch to Santi Cazorla on the opposite side.&nbsp;

Cazorla's drive was parried but only to Moreno, who finished.&nbsp;

Messi laid on two sumptuous assists before half-time but the finishes were even better.&nbsp;

After chesting the ball down in the centre circle, Messi touched and turned, leaving his marker for dead.&nbsp;

He drove through two Villarreal defenders before pushing the ball left to Suarez, who arrived from the angle on the edge of the box and curled first time into the far corner.&nbsp;

If that was power, Griezmann's was finesse, Messi and Suarez combining before Messi dragged back to the Frenchman, who caressed a delightful chip over Sergio Asenjo and in.&nbsp;

Messi thought he had his goal in the second half but Arturo Vidal was offside.&nbsp;

Suarez was taken off, presumably rested, and Fati added a fourth off the bench. The teenager cut in from the left and pulled his shot back inside the near post.&nbsp;

After edging out Getafe on Thursday, through a Ramos spot-kick, Madrid repeated the trick at San Mames, their captain's nerve from the spot combining with a gutsy display for a pivotal win.&nbsp;

Ramos was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty himself late on when, off the ball, he seemed to slip and tread on the foot of Raul Garcia, but Madrid escaped.&nbsp;

Instead, the defender's 10th goal of the season, the best tally of his career, proved decisive.

"It's a massive win," said Ramos. "We knew today was going to be one of the biggest games that we have left.&nbsp;

"It's always a difficult game away at Bilbao and we saw it like that. We're happy with another crucial three points that put more pressure on Barcelona."&nbsp;

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has "a lot of confidence" his club will avoid a two-season ban from European competitions when the verdict of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is revealed later this month.

City were banned from UEFA competitions for two years by the European governing body in February after being found guilty of overstating sponsorship outcome to avoid breaches of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Their case was heard by CAS last month and the club have always been bullish about the potential outcome.

"We are ready. I have a lot of confidence and trust with the people that we will be allowed to play the Champions League, because we want to be on the field during these years," said Guardiola.

"On July 13 we will know the resolution, hopefully, for the club - all the workers, players and everyone here, staff - to try to continue growing up as a club in the next years."

Amid the off-field issues, City remain one of the favourites to win this season's Champions League, which is now due to resume in August.

City hold a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid after the first leg of their last-16 tie.

There is still uncertainty over where the return match will be played with the rest of the competition from the quarter-finals to be played at neutral venues in Lisbon.

City may have surrendered their Premier League title to Liverpool but a 4-0 thrashing of the newly-crowned English champions on Thursday showed why Guardiola's men are still among the most feared sides in Europe.

"Every game is different but I cannot deny beating Liverpool the way we did (was good)," said Guardiola, whose side travel to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday. "Football is about feelings, moments.

"Sometimes your mood is up, sometimes it is down when you face these games, but we can say we beat maybe the best team in the world right now. So we can do it.

"Every game is different, (FA Cup semi-final opponents) Arsenal play different, Madrid play different. Each game you have to adjust the qualities.

"What I want is to arrive in the best conditions possible to these games and after put mentality on the pitch.

"These games are not won with tactics or ideas, it is desire. We want to do it. When one team wants to do it - OK they can be beaten - but it will not be easy for the opponent."

When one team wants to do it - OK they can be beaten - but it will not be easy for the opponent."

West Ham were denied the opening goal at the London Stadium when VAR ruled Michail Antonio was offside as he lay on the ground while Tomas Soucek slotted home.

Willian fired Chelsea ahead from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time after Issa Diop tripped Christian Pulisic.

Soucek headed home in first-half stoppage time as West Ham finally scored their first goal since the restart.

Antonio put West Ham in front in the 51st minute when he slid in to convert Jarrod Bowen's cross.

Willian's superb 70th-minute free-kick drew Chelsea level, but it was West Ham who broke away to win it in the 89th minute when substitute Andriy Yarmolenko finished a brilliant counter attack.

"It's the story of our season. It's been a good season but there have been so many of these moments," Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said.

"I'm not happy with any of the goals. There were details in the game which we knew but we lost because we didn't get them right.

At the Emirates Stadium, Aubameyang moved alongside Jamie Vardy as the Premier League's top scorer on 19 goals on a night of contrasting fortunes for the Golden Boot contenders.

Arsenal registered a third straight win to move up to seventh against a Norwich side ever more resigned to relegation.

Canaries keeper Tim Krul did his side no favours by gifting the opener to Aubameyang when he was caught trying to dribble past the Gabon international.

Aubameyang's first saw him reach 50 Premier League goals in 79 appearances -- making him the fastest Arsenal player to reach that landmark.

"A player that is able to score as many goals as he has done in that short space of time tells you everything about the importance that he has for us," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Aubameyang turned provider for Granit Xhaka to make it 2-0 before half-time and was then handed another gift when Norwich striker Josip Drmic teed him up to make it 3-0.

Cedric Soares, signed from Southampton in January, made his debut one to remember with a long-range strike nine minutes from time to round off the scoring.

Kelechi Iheanacho's fortunate goal as the ball ricocheted in off his face reduced Leicester's arrears and they pressed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages.

"Our form hasn't been the best for a period now but we still have it in our hands to achieve what would be a dream for us, getting into the top four," said Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.

At the bottom of the table, Bournemouth also suffered a huge blow in their battle to beat the drop with a humiliating 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

Dwight Gayle, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and Valentino Lazaro were on target for the Magpies.

Twelve different parties have shown interest in buying Wigan Athletic and they must now prove they have necessary funds to progress in negotiations, said Gerald Krasner, a joint administrator of the Championship club.

Wigan entered administration on Wednesday -- the first professional English club to do so in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic -- and are set to be handed a 12-point penalty by the English Football League (EFL).

Krasner, Paul Stanley, and Dean Watson from Begbies Taylor have been appointed as joint administrators of the club, with Krasner saying the interested parties must now show proof of funds for at least 10 million pounds ($12.51 million).

"Realistically, I've got 12 interested parties," Krasner told a news conference on Thursday.

"I'm going to send out today non-disclosure agreements and ask for proof of funds because you get some very peculiar people who want to buy football clubs that have got no money.

"When they've returned with proof of funds, those people will get details of what's for sale and then the serious negotiations will start, so I hope by the end of July - the end of the season - to have got serious interested parties on board."

Wigan were owned by the Whelan family until 2018 before being taken over by Hong Kong-based International Entertainment Corporation.

The club's ownership changed hands for the second time in two years when they were taken over by a Hong Kong-based consortium headed by Au Yeung Wai Kay in June.

Krasner said he will be contacting former Wigan owner Dave Whelan to see if he can help.

A number of Football League clubs could fall into administration due to the financial strain caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Krasner said.

"It is my personal view that there are a number of clubs in the lower divisions, League One and League Two, that may not survive by coming back," he added.

"There is possibly one more Championship club that may seriously be thinking about doing the same."

The Danish Cup final was interrupted for almost a quarter of an hour because fans refused to comply with the social distancing rules inside the stadium, police said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The two finalists, Aalborg (AaB) and SonderjyskE, were each allocated 750 tickets for the match in Esbjerg on Wednesday evening.

During the first half, "the referee had to suspend the match for up to 15 minutes, when the AaB fans refused to stay in the designated seats and huddled together in violation of the Covid rules," Sydjylland police said on Twitter.&nbsp;

Between 40 and 50 of the fans were expelled from the ground and put on a bus and sent back to Aalborg with a police escort.

The match resumed after 14 minutes and ended in a 2-0 victory for SonderjyskE, who won the competition for the first time.

The police also tweeted that they arrested some fans for letting off flares.

The increased crowd for the match represented a loosening of Denmark's earlier coronavirus rules limiting attendance at a football match to 500 with a minimum distance between them of two metres.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> CEO Richard Masters defended players’ and clubs’ collective decision to support the Black Lives Matter movement on Tuesday, describing it as a moral cause and not a political one.

When the league restarted this month after a three-month stoppage due to the coronavirus pandemic, all players had “Black Lives Matter” on their shirts instead of their names in the opening round of games and they have continued to take a knee before kick-off in support of BLM.

At a hearing of the British parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Conservative MP Steve Brine said the the league’s support for the movement appeared to mark a shift from its previous opposition to political messages in the sport.

He highlighted previous cases of politics in English football such as when Arsenal distanced themselves from Mesut Ozil’s support for the Uighur Muslim population in China and when the league fined Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for wearing a yellow ribbon in support of Catalan independence campaigners.

“How did we get from Ozil and Pep to Black Lives Matter, and can the Premier League players and managers now be assured that anything goes if they have a cause that they feel strongly about and the Premier League will not take action against them?” he asked Masters.

“I think we are living in unprecedented times,” Masters replied.

“Players are used to being the message board for other people’s messages and on this occasion they wanted to make two very clear statements as players, supported by the Premier League and the clubs: Thanking the NHS..and also recognising the issues that are going around the world and the support of the sentiment of Black Lives Matter,” he said.

“We listened and are happy to support them.

“I don’t think it sets any particular precedent. I think it is perfectly possible to support Black Lives Matter the sentiment without being seen to support any political organisation,” he said.

“We are an apolitical organisation - we don’t support political organisations.”

Masters said “all players” had backed the campaign, but he added that there would be a high bar for any future initatives which would have to be agreed upon.

“We are drawing a clear distinction between a moral cause and a political movement or agenda. Whilst there may be a difficulty sometimes, dividing the two, our position is clear: Politics no, moral causes yes - when agreed,” he said.

Masters said if players got involved in political messaging on the field without agreement they would remain in breach of regulations and could face fines.

Labour MP Julie Elliott said she was concerned about Masters’ explanation.

“I think you are opening up a can of worms by how you have responded to those questions,” she said.

Masters reiterated that the decision to back BLM was a collective one, saying it had come out of conference call discussions with the captains of the Premier League clubs, and did not set a precedent.

<figure>&nbsp;</figure>

“This is all players coming together...it is a firm position from all players,” he said.

“It doesn’t mean that whenever players on an individual (or) collective basis want to do something that the Premier League and clubs will be duty-bound to support it.”

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah says he wants to remain at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions for a long time and says the team have developed a perfect understanding.

The Egypt international, who signed a new five-year deal in 2018, was the top scorer at the club this season with 17 Premier League goals as they secured a 19th top-flight title with seven games to spare.

“I’m very happy... I can’t describe my feelings after we won the league after 30 years. I can see people’s joy and this is so important for all of us,” Salah told BeIN Sport.

“I enjoy the atmosphere here ... I love this place and I hope to stay for a long time. The atmosphere here is different to any other place.

“We have adapted well as a team and our understanding is perfect. If this continues, we can achieve more. It’s difficult to maintain our current level, but it’s not impossible.”

Salah hailed the impact of club captain Jordan Henderson and said he would pick the midfielder as the best player in the league this season.

“Maybe I’ll choose Henderson because he’s the captain and he’s been here for about eight-nine years. He had a difficult time in the beginning and he was heavily criticized,” he said.

The Chinese Super League season will begin on July 25 after the coronavirus pandemic delayed it by five months, the country's football association said on Wednesday.

The 16-team competition, which had been originally due to kick off in February, will be split into two groups, one in the northeastern city of Dalian and the other in Suzhou, near Shanghai, the China Football Association (CFA) said.

It is a major boost for sport in China and another sign of life returning to normality in the country where COVID-19 emerged late last year before spreading globally.

The CFA said the league would "strictly abide by the requirements of national epidemic prevention work".

The CSL, which has drawn international interest in recent years by luring big-name players and coaches on world-leading wages, had been scheduled to start on February 22.

However, it became one of the first sporting victims of the coronavirus in January when the new season was indefinitely postponed.

Television commentators praise players with lighter skin as more intelligent and hardworking than those with darker skin, showed a study&nbsp;<a href="https://runrepeat.com/racial-bias-study-soccer">here</a>&nbsp;by Danish firm RunRepeat in association with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).

The study analysed 2,073 statements from English-speaking commentators in 80 games from the 2019-20 season across Italy’s Serie A, France’s Ligue 1, Spain’s La Liga and England’s Premier League. A total of 643 players of various races and skin tones were discussed.

Analysis revealed that players with darker skin tones were “significantly more likely” to be reduced to their physical characteristics or athletic abilities like pace and power.

Around 62% of praise was aimed at players with lighter skin while 63.33% of criticism was aimed at those with darker skin.

“To address the real impact of structural racism, we have to acknowledge and address racial bias. This study shows an evident bias in how we describe the attributes of footballers based on their skin colour,” PFA Equalities Executive Jason Lee said.

“Commentators help shape the perception we hold of each player, deepening any racial bias already held by the viewer. It’s important to consider how far-reaching those perceptions can be and how they impact footballers even once they finish their playing career.

“If a player has aspirations of becoming a coach/manager, is an unfair advantage given to players that commentators regularly refer to as intelligent and industrious, when those views appear to be a result of racial bias?”

The study comes amid protests around the world against racial injustice following the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in the U.S. city of Minneapolis on May 25.

Burnley captain Ben Mee marked his 300th appearance for the club by scoring in a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Monday as the Clarets climbed to eighth in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> table.

Victory saw Sean Dyche's visitors go level on points with Tottenham Hotspur and keep alive their hopes of European football next season.

A week on from saying how "ashamed" he was at a plane carrying the message 'White lives Matter Burnley' over the Etihad Stadium during a 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City, the defender won plaudits for his football at Selhurst Park as the Clarets built on a 1-0 win over Watford.

Mee ended a three-year wait for a goal in the 62nd minute with a diving header from Ashley Westwood's free-kick after getting in front of Gary Cahill.

Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita got a hand to the ball but not a strong one and could only divert it in off a post for the only goal of the game.

Mee, simply saying it was "nice" to score,&nbsp;told Amazon Prime of the reaction to his post-match comments following the City defeat.

"I've been humbled by the response to the interview," he said. "It's nice to hear.&nbsp;

"The club got quite a few emails too which I read a few of. It wasn't a great night for us but we have responded really well to get two wins on the bounce."&nbsp;

Defeat dropped Palace down to 11th place but Roy Hodgson's men are still a comfortable 15 points clear of the relegation zone with six games to play despite a second successive defeat.

Former England boss Hodgson refused to blame his keeper for the loss, saying: "We did everything we could to find a way through but it didn't work out for us."

Burnley's victory was all the more impressive as they were without three first-choice forwards in Jay Rodriguez, Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes.

"We've had to change things with the stretched squad we have and we did very well," Burnley manager Dyche told the BBC.

Burnley could have opened the scoring in the 19th minute only for Dwight McNeil to shoot over the top from inside the area.

Palace created chances but Cahill and James McArthur were both off target.

In the second half, the video assistant referee was called in as Palace's Jordan Ayew avoided a red card for catching Josh Brownhill with his arm.

Then came the key moment, defender Mee stooping low for his first goal since January 2017.&nbsp;

Frank Lampard said Tuesday that Chelsea had not made a bid for free agent Angel Gomes and was tight-lipped over a link with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Manchester United have confirmed London-born Gomes, 19, is leaving Old Trafford, with the highly rated attacking midfielder's services now in high demand.

Chelsea have been linked with a swoop for the England Under-20s star, but Blues boss Lampard rejected any interest out of hand.

Asked if Chelsea had made a bid for Gomes, Lampard told a press conference: "Yes, I can elaborate to the point that it's never been mentioned at my end, so that's it."

And when asked if there is any interest, Lampard added: "No."

Fourth-placed Chelsea will head to West Ham for Wednesday's Premier League clash looking for a sixth straight win in all competitions, and a fourth since the resumption of football after the coronavirus lockdown.

The Blues continue to be linked with a summer move for West Ham's 21-year-old England and ex-Chelsea academy star Rice.

But Stamford Bridge manager Lampard kept his cards close to his chest at his pre-match press conference.

"Declan Rice is a good player, you're right, and I've known Declan Rice for a long time, as he was in the Chelsea academy, but there's no talk," said Lampard.

"I keep saying, about every player we'll be asked about. Until these games and this season is finished, there's nothing to say."

Lampard has deployed France World Cup-winner N'Golo Kante in a more defensive position since the restart but said he remained hugely important to the side.

"I think with N'Golo I have a way I want him to work our midfield, where we have some fluidity to us, which allows N'Golo to bring his best attributes to the game," he said.

"N'Golo, since he has been here, has shown his attributes and qualities mean that he can play in pretty much any role in midfield that you want him to," he added.

"He is an incredible player, I keep saying it and I mean it -- he is huge for this club. He has been huge and he will be for a long time and I am happy with him."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to improve, saying he is open to further strengthening his attack despite their impressive goalscoring form this season.

The Old Trafford giants are on course to have two players hit the 20-goal mark in the same campaign, in all competitions, since Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez in 2010/11.

Martial's first Manchester United hat-trick, against Sheffield United last week, took him level with Rashford on 19 goals, while 18-year-old academy graduate Mason Greenwood has found the net 12 times in a breakthrough season.

"I think all three that we have talked about have had a good development this season -- but they can be so much better," he said ahead of his side's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> match at Brighton on Tuesday.

"All three, I'm still waiting to see them blossom because there's parts of their game that they still need to improve on."

Odion Ighalo arrived on loan in January to bolster United's attacking options and Solskjaer said the strikers know his desire for them to improve comes with a need to "make decisions for the team and the club".

"If you think you've got a divine right to be playing every game and doing so well that we're not going to look for players to replace you, you're in the wrong place," he said.

"I've been here for so many years myself as a striker and Teddy Sheringham comes in, Dwight Yorke comes in, Ruud van Nistelrooy comes in, Wayne Rooney comes in.

"We've always got to look at improving. And if they don't improve, well, we might have to look somewhere else to get better because we have to be better.

"We're too far away from where we need to be and want to be."

United, unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions, are sixth in the Premier League table, five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for a Champions League spot.

Solskjaer dismissed the notion that United have an easy run-in, with matches against a group of relegation strugglers to come.

"It's the Premier League, with quality players and quality teams, so I would never ever say 'this is an easy game' in the Premier League," he said. "Absolutely no chance."

UEFA is not looking for a Plan B for the Champions League ‘Final 8’ due to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, despite several towns in the Portuguese capital preparing to head into lockdown as COVID-19 cases surge again.

UEFA has clarified that it is in permanent contact with the Portuguese Football Association while adding there is no reason to have a plan B. However, the governing body said that they are ready to adapt if they have to.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does not believe he has to spend “millions” in the transfer market in a bid to put more depth and improve the current squad as he said that improving on the current crop of players is a tricky task.&nbsp;

There has been a celebratory mood in the Liverpool camp following their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> triumph after a 30-year-long break. However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has sights on defending the title successfully in the next season. With COVID-19 pandemic likely to affect the cash-flow in the transfer market, many clubs may put a break on their spending spree.&nbsp;

Klopp’s Liverpool were crowned <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions last week for the first time in 30 years with a record seven matches to go. Klopp said that spending heavy would not be easy or the right thing to do during the tough times.&nbsp;

The Reds backed out in the race for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner as Chelsea snapped the German up. The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana also look likely to leave the Anfield this transfer window.&nbsp;

"COVID has, of course, influenced both sides with ins and outs, that is completely normal, and it's just not likely that it will be the busiest summer in the world," Klopp told reporters.

<h2>We try to be creative: Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool's transfer targets</h2>

"But maybe at a later point in the year, if the transfer window is still open, we will know more. But this squad... look at it. It is not a squad you have to change now and say 'OK, we need this position and this position'."

"We cannot spend millions and millions and millions because we want to or we think it is nice to do," he added. "We never wanted that."

With Klopp ruling out ‘big signings’, academy players could be given a jump in terms of responsibility. Klopp has players in his radar.&nbsp;

"You have to be creative and we try to be creative," said Klopp. "We try to find solutions internally and there is still a lot to come. We have three or four players who can make big steps."

Eight-times FA Cup winners Chelsea reached the semi-finals on Sunday as midfielder Ross Barkley came off the bench to secure a deserved 1-0 victory at faltering Leicester City.

Barkley, one of the three changes manager Frank Lampard made at halftime, slid home the winner in the 63rd minute as the west London side set up a semi-final against Manchester United.

Leicester were the better side before the break and had the bulk of the chances against a lethargic Chelsea, but the visitors were a different proposition after the interval.

Tammy Abraham had a goal ruled out for offside and then Barkley found space in the area to clip Willian’s measured cross past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel just past the hour.

Leicester, without the creativity of attacking midfielder James Maddison who was missing with a hip problem, struggled to respond although they did mount some belated late pressure.

Chelsea have been buoyant since the season resumed following the novel coronavirus stoppage, winning both of their Premier League games to consolidate fourth place and they now have a Cup semi-final to look forward to.

Leicester on the other hand have struggled to rediscover their rhythm, drawing twice in the league, and while they are still third, other teams are breathing down their neck.

“It was important to get the win and keep the momentum going,” Barkley said. “At halftime we said it’s not good enough and to be vocal on the pitch, and we improved.”

It was the third of this year’s FA Cup quarter-finals to be won by the away side and how Leicester could have done with the noisy support they usually receive at the King Power Stadium.

They did start the game well with Harvey Barnes having half a chance and Jonny Evans just failing to connect with a header.

Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero did not have much to do, although he did scramble away a Youri Tielemans shot.

Lampard was unhappy and could clearly be heard telling his team to “liven up” in the empty stadium.

Young trio Mason Mount, Billy Gilmour and Reece James all came off at halftime with Barkley, Mateo Kovacic and Cesar Azpilicueta sent on to add some experience.

Lampard was rewarded with a much-improved display.

Barcelona are set to sack manager Quique Setien after the completion of 2019-20 season unless the Catalan club experiences a dramatic change in fortune. Setien was hired in January after the removal of Ernesto Valverde but has struggled to manage the Barcelona dressing room full of superstars. The Barcelona board is also irked by the recent dip in form.

According to reports, Setien will lose his job should Barca fail to defend the La Liga or lose out in Champions League in the coming months. The 61-year-old was handed a two-and-a-half-year contract earlier in 2020.&nbsp;

The former Real Betis coach seems to have lost the dressing room where megastars hold a notable influence. It is even reported that players have been left confused by his tactics and handling of players. Setien’s assistant – Eder Sarabia – is also reportedly an unpopular figure within the squad.

A video clip of Lionel Messi openly ignoring instructions from Sarabia during Barcelona’s 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo went viral which fueled speculations that all is not well within the Barca squad. Reportedly, there was a heated dressing room bust-up after the game as Real Madrid took a two-point lead in the La Liga race with just six games remaining.

However, Setien could manage to hold on to his job given Barcelona lift both La Liga and UCL.

It is believed that former midfielder Xavi is leading to take over the charge from Setien. Barcelona B team boss Xavi Garcia Pimienta is touted to be another replacement for Setien.

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to celebrate "in a safe way" during the coronavirus crisis after chaotic scenes marred the club's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title celebrations.

Thousands of Liverpool fans gathered at the Pier Head for a second night of celebrations on Friday after the club became champions of England for the first time in 30 years.

Police said officers were subject to violent confrontations and had glasses and bottles thrown at them as the celebrations continued in the city centre into the early hours.

Klopp, in an open letter to fans in the Liverpool Echo, said he "did not love" the scenes that took place at Pier Head.

"I am a human being and your passion is also my passion, but right now the most important thing is that we do not have these kind of public gatherings," wrote Klopp.

"We owe it to the most vulnerable in our community, to the health workers who have given so much and whom we have applauded and to the police and local authorities who help us as a club not to do this," he added.

Klopp said fans should celebrate in a safe way in private settings to avoid spreading the disease.

He added: "If things were different I would love nothing more than to celebrate together, to have a parade that would be even bigger than the one after we won the Champions League last year so that we could all share this special moment but it just is not possible."

The German boss urged fans not to let efforts to fight COVID-19 go to waste.

"When the time is right we will celebrate," he said. "We will enjoy this moment and we will paint the city red. But for now, please stay at home as much as possible."

In a joint statement with Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council on Saturday, the club criticised supporters who had ignored social-distancing advice.

Liverpool's mayor Joe Anderson condemned the scenes, saying they had brought a "negative focus" on the city.

Klopp also praised fans for their support during the season, which was interrupted for three months by the coronavirus.

He described it as "an incredible time for incredible supporters of an incredible club in an incredible city".

"I love your passion, your songs, your refusal to accept defeat, your commitment, your understanding of the game and your faith in what we are doing," he said.

Police said £10,000 ($12,000) worth of damage was caused to the Liver Building, one of the city's most famous landmarks, after a firework landed on a balcony on Friday.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with causing criminal damage and was due to appear at Liverpool magistrates' court on Monday.

Klopp admonishes Liverpool fans after chaotic celebrations

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema produced an audacious back-heeled assist for Casemiro to score as they beat Espanyol 1-0 away on Sunday to capitalise on Barcelona’s slip-up a day earlier and move two points clear at the top of La Liga.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro slid to the ground to guide the ball home on the stroke of halftime after being played in by a stroke of genius from Benzema, who dragged the ball through the legs of his marker Bernardo Espinosa to find his team mate.

Casemiro ran straight to Frenchman Benzema to thank him for the pass and dedicated the goal to him.

“The goal belongs to Karim. We’re used to the quality he brings to his play and I had to celebrate it with him because it was all down to him,” Casemiro said.

“We know how good he is and that’s why I called for the ball as I knew he would lay the ball off to me.”

Coach Zinedine Zidane added: “I’m not surprised by what Karim did at all, he is a player who keeps inventing things on the pitch and his control and backheel was super. It might be the best piece of play of the season.”

Real’s players embraced each other when the final whistle arrived to signal a fifth consecutive victory which took them top on 71 points after 32 games. Barca, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo on Saturday, are second on 69.

Espanyol, playing their first game under caretaker Francisco Rufete after he became their fourth manager of a troubling campaign, remain rooted to the bottom on 24 points.

Casemiro was Real’s most dangerous player and nearly opened the scoring early on with a wild shot from his own half which forced Espanyol goalkeeper Diego Lopez to scramble back towards his line and push the ball away.

Casemiro then somehow missed the target with a header when he appeared unmarked from close range, but he soon made amends thanks to the quick-thinking of Benzema.

“This is how I see football and I could see Casemiro arriving,” added Benzema. “It was a nice assist but the goal was more important, Casemiro did well and got us three important points after a very difficult game.”

Real looked in control for most of the match but had to endure two nervy moments in the final stages.

Espanyol’s Espinosa was inches away from connecting with a ball which flashed across the face of goal while Real defender Marcelo was forced to block a shot in added time which he almost deflected into his own net but the ball skidded wide.

Clever Benzema assist helps Real Madrid go clear at the top

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City failed to match Liverpool's hunger to win the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title after his side's two-year reign as champions came to an end on Thursday.

Guardiola's side handed Liverpool their first English title for 30 years after losing 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

After playing second fiddle to City for the last two years, Liverpool have stormed to the title with a remarkable 28 wins from their 31 league games to open up a 23-point gap at the top of the table.

Guardiola conceded his players struggled to emulate the desire and drive shown by Jurgen Klopp's team.&nbsp;

"Maybe we didn't arrive with the same passion; Liverpool played every single game like it was the last chance they have," Guardiola said.

"And maybe we didn't get that moment, especially the key moments in the first part of the season.

"That is the reality, that we are so far behind. Liverpool were fantastic in consistency throughout the whole season.

"We dropped points at the beginning of the season and Liverpool didn't drop points."

Liverpool's title triumph comes with a record seven games still to play and the Reds could go on to smash a whole series of records set by Guardiola's City two years ago.

Urging City to be maintain their focus better in future, Guardiola is well aware of the task his side face to regain the title next term.

"We'll have to recover for next season, to be more consistent, and recover the points we missed this season.

"That's the reality. Two years ago we were 25 points ahead of Liverpool, and now they are this distance ahead."

Guardiola had known the title was on its way to Merseyside for months after Liverpool opened up a huge lead before the coronavirus hiatus.

Now the City manager has challenged his stars to learn from the painful experience. &nbsp;

"We have to take a little perspective, be humble, and say 'not all the time we can win'," he said.

"Then we must learn what we need to do to avoid this situation again."

Guardiola is confident of a City response next season, but is concentrating on finishing this season on a high in the FA Cup and Champions League.

The holders travel to Newcastle in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday and hold a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid from the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

"Now we have I would say still five, six weeks of competition, especially Sunday with the FA Cup.

"It's important to get to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, get qualification for the Champions League, and after that the Champions League itself.

"I've never thought 'always we can win', but we can say, the last 10 competitions we played as a club we won eight titles.

"That's never happened before in this country. You cannot win all the time and always."

Guardiola appeared to blame the absence for most of the season of injured French centre-back Aymeric Laporte for City's spluttering form.

"We missed one important central defender. That was a real big problem for us," he said.

Man City did not match Liverpool's passion, says Guardiola

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was overcome with emotion as he dedicated the club's first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">league</a> title in 30 years to the fans on Thursday.

Klopp wiped away tears of joy during a television interview minutes after Chelsea's 2-1 win against Manchester City sealed the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> crown for Liverpool.

"It's such a big moment, I am completely overwhelmed," Klopp told Sky Sports.

"Tonight it is for you out there," added Klopp.

"It's incredible. I hope you stay at home, or go in front of your house if you want, but not more. We do it together in this moment and it is a joy to do it for you."

Thousands ignored Klopp's plea to respect social distancing rules amid the coronavirus as they partied the night away in the streets around Anfield.

But the German promised Liverpool will hold a celebratory parade through the city when it is safe to do so.

"We will create pictures in the future with the parade whenever it will be for all our supporters," added Klopp. "We will be together and enjoy this in a proper manner."

The long-awaited title was clinched without Liverpool kicking a ball as City's defeat meant Klopp's men have an unassailable 23-point lead at the top of the Premier League with seven games to play.

A first league title in three decades caps a meteoric rise for the Reds back to the top of the English game after Klopp arrived in 2015 with the club struggling just to break into the top four.

But the former Borussia Dortmund coach remains hungry for more silverware in the coming years with most of his squad still in their prime.

"What they did over the last two or three years is just exceptional and a pure joy for me to coach them," said Klopp, who watched City's defeat alongside his players at a hotel.

"It's just been a really exciting ride from the first day I arrived and it is not over yet, that's the good thing.

"The team all look like they have a good few years in their legs but for tonight we just enjoy this moment. It is the best thing I can imagine, it's more than I ever dreamed of to be honest."

<h2>- 'We've been incredible' -</h2>

Virgil Van Dijk's signing from Southampton in 2018 has proved one of the key moments in Liverpool's renaissance under Klopp.

The Dutch defender said Liverpool had to raise their game even higher this season to overhaul City after a club record 97 points was still only good enough for second last season.

"What a season. We've been incredible. To be part of this group of players and part of this journey is incredible and I am very proud to be able to call myself a Premier League winner," he said.

"In the league this year we have taken it to another level. We have been so consistent and played so well."

Liverpool's principal owner John W Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group bought the club in 2010, paid tribute to their incredible campaign.

"This was a season for the ages and for the faithful of Liverpool Football Club," Henry tweeted.

Kenny Dalglish, who won three titles as Liverpool manager and was the last man to guide them to the trophy in 1990, admitted he never expected the wait to be so long.

"I think back then if you'd have said it would take 30 years you'd have been arrested and sectioned, but sometimes things happen," Dalglish told BT Sport.

"Since Jurgen came in, it has been very positive all the way. He's been fantastic and he epitomises everything that Liverpool stands for.

"I think there will be plenty more days to look forward to as long as Jurgen is there."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy last season and the midfielder said clinching the Premier League was just as sweet.

"I'm just a little bit overwhelmed right now, it's just an amazing feeling and just so proud of what we've achieved," he said.

"Another moment in our lives that we'll never forget."

In the moments after the final whistle at Chelsea, Liverpool defender Andy Robertson best summed up the feelings of Reds fans across the world as he simply tweeted: "Oh my god."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has asked his players to remain “focused” in a bid to achieve more silverware in future after Liverpool ended a 30-year-wait to win the Premier League title. The Reds have already smashed the record of becoming the fastest Premier League champions while being on course to set a new record points tally and winning margin as they hold a 23-point lead atop the Premier League standings. Klopp, who has changed Liverpool’s fortunes since taking charge in 2015, said that last season’s Champions League win paved way for winning the Premier League title. Furthermore, Klopp called on his players to remain “humble” in the quest for more success. "We will not stop" - Jurgen Klopp "The consistency the boys showed is so exceptional and we will not stop," Klopp said in a videoconference on Friday. "We really have to and will stay focused because we see the opportunity. Will not stop doesn't mean we will win everything, we just want to improve." "The consistency comes from the mix of determination, buying into the idea, character, attitude and personality that makes this group special," Klopp said. "They are still humble. As long as we stay humble we have a good chance to stay successful in the future too." 'We will not stop': Jurgen Klopp fires warning to clubs after ending 30-year wait for Premier League

Liverpool's coronation as English champions for the first time in 30 years is the culmination of a dramatic journey since Jurgen Klopp's appointment as manager in 2015.

Klopp is the charismatic face of Liverpool's transformation from top-four contenders to Champions League winners and now P<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">remier League</a> champions.

However, the Reds' success on the pitch has been made possible by plenty of shrewd work on signings and sales behind the scenes.

Of the 18-man squad named by Klopp in his first match in charge less than five years ago, only James Milner, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi have featured this season, in peripheral roles.

The construction of Liverpool's title-winning squad has been a steady process.

In Klopp's first summer transfer window, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum arrived to help secure a return to the Champions League.

The next year they were joined by Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

By January 2018, a long pursuit of Virgil van Dijk resulted in the Dutchman becoming the world's most expensive defender for £75 million ($93 million).

Inspired by Salah's free-scoring form, the instant impact of Van Dijk and growing maturity of full-backs Robertson and academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool reached the Champions League final in 2018.

Two howlers from Loris Karius against Real Madrid delayed a sixth European Cup win for a year, but what happened afterwards showed the club's ruthless desire to get back to winning major trophies.

Karius has never played another game for Liverpool as another world record fee, this time for a goalkeeper, was splashed on Alisson Becker from Roma.

Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri were also recruited in 2018 in a spending spree of more than £160 million.

"Maybe this season finally you demand they win," jibed then Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Win is what they have done relentlessly for two years.

A mammoth total of 97 points was still not enough to win the title last season due to Manchester City's own stunning levels of consistency.

However, the upgrades for the 2018/19 season were rewarded in silverware with a Champions League triumph. On the way to the trophy Liverpool thumped Barcelona 4-0 in the second leg of the semi-final, even without the injured Salah and Roberto Firmino.

<h2>- Money well spent -</h2>

The momentum of Madrid rolled into this season, with only the coronavirus pandemic preventing possibly the earliest-ever crowning of English champions.

Yet, in an era of sheikhs and oligarchs, Liverpool's success is not in outspending their rivals, but doing so more efficiently.

According to transfer specialists Transfermarkt, Liverpool's net spend over the past five years is £109 million, less than the outlay of Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Brighton.

It is a testament to Klopp's managerial skill that the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142 million in January 2018 did not derail his side's progress.

Sporting director Michael Edwards has played a huge role in giving Klopp the resources he wants to work with by extracting maximum value from departures.

The sales of Mamadou Sakho, Dominic Solanke, Danny Ward, Danny Ings, Christian Benteke and Jordon Ibe have helped contribute another £120 million.

"I must also highlight the role of our sporting director, Michael Edwards in this journey so far," said Klopp when he signed a contract extension to 2024 earlier this season.

"His input and collaboration has been just as important as anyone else's in getting us into a position to compete for the game's top titles."

Having climbed the mountain, Liverpool plan on staying there.

A host of key players including Salah, Mane, Firmino, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson have signed contract extensions in the past two years.

"Liverpool's squad is young and all the key players are tied down on long contracts. They have huge potential to win more trophies," former England captain Wayne Rooney, who also skippered Liverpool's two biggest rivals, Everton and Manchester United, admitted on Sunday.

The signing of highly rated 17-year-old Harvey Elliott and using a bargain £8 million buyout clause to secure Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg in January are further examples of Liverpool's long-term planning.

"For anyone in football who aspires to compete in an environment where every element of the organisation is at its very best – from the support of the supporters to the vision of the owners – there can be no better place than this," said Klopp.
