Bayern Munich are one win from an eighth straight Bundesliga title after Leon Goretzka inspired Saturday's narrow win over Moenchengladbach, while injury-hit Schalke claimed an unwanted club record.

AFP Sport looks at five key things from this weekend's action:

<h2>No beer showers, no trophy show</h2>

Bayern can be crowned German champions for the 30th time if they win at Werder Bremen on Tuesday, but the hygiene measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic means any celebrations will be subdued.

Traditionally, the winning team chase each other with over-sized glasses of wheat beer on the pitch once they have won the title, but 'beer showers' are banned under German league rules this year.

The Mayor of Munich has also ruled out Bayern showing off the Bundesliga trophy at the city's town hall on Marienplatz.

"I am sure an appropriate honour will be found if Bayern should win the title," Munich mayor Dieter Reiter told German daily Bild.

<h2>Mueller's reprimand</h2>

Thomas Mueller was reprimanded by Bayern Munich's director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic, it was revealed over the weekend, for commenting on the club's transfer policy.

Mueller strayed offside when he was asked last week about rumours Bayern want to buy Leverkusen talent Kai Havertz.

"He's an extremely good player", said Mueller, who added he had "no insight into the club's finances", but "it's a bit paradoxical to always talk about new players and save on salaries at the same time".

With Mueller suspended for a fifth yellow card for Bayern's 2-1 win over Moenchengladbach, Salihamidzic said on Saturday that he had "told him (Mueller) that it was not correct" for players to "comment on transfers".

On Sunday, Mueller said on Facebook that his opinion had been "proactively" interpreted by the media and he only wanted "the best possible squad".

<h2>Leipzig braced to lose Werner</h2>

Third-placed RB Leipzig can book a Champions League place next season by beating Fortuna Duesseldorf on Wednesday, but head coach Julian Nagelsmann is already planning without Chelsea-target Timo Werner.

Werner has 25 league goals this season and Chelsea reportedly want to action a release clause to sign him for around 60 million euros (£53 million, $67 million).

"Should Timo leave us," said Nagelsmann on Sunday, Leipzig's main source of goals will be "gone".

The transfer is "not sealed yet", said Nagelsmann, but "when a top player goes, it creates a hole and it is up to us to fill it."

<h2>Schalke's unwanted record</h2>

Schalke, who were missing 10 players, set a club record of 13 league games without a win on Sunday as head coach David Wagner was forced to name an inexperienced squad for the 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

A penalty early in the second-half by Schalke's Daniel Caligiuri was cancelled out by a late own goal from defender Juan Miranda.

Schalke are winless since January's 2-0 win at home to Moenchengladbach as they drop to ninth in the table having been third in December.&nbsp;

Wagner gave league debuts to Schalke's Under-19 captain and winger Can Bozdogan and second-half replacement Jonas Hofmann, 23, who was promoted from the reserves.

"It shows that despite the results, despite the difficulties, this squad stands together and tries to make impossible things possible," said Wagner.

<h2>Fuellkrug's dream return</h2>

Bremen striker Niclas Fuellkrug made a dream return when he scored after 273 days out with a knee injury.

Fuellkrug came on for the last 15 minutes at last placed Paderborn and scored the final goal in Saturday's 5-1 rout which gives second-from-bottom Bremen hope of staying up.

The 27-year-old tore his cruciate ligament in training last September and had to go under the knife again in February.

"It was a very nice moment, a bit emotional and a reward which I have had to earn over a long period of time," he said after his goal.

Fuellkrug celebrated by jumping into the arms of Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt, who said the striker is unlikely to start against Bayern on Tuesday.

Five things from the Bundesliga

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has pleaded with the British government to continue to supply free meals for children in poorer families during the summer holidays in a letter "written from the heart".

Children eligible for free school meals have received food during the coronavirus lockdown, often in the form of vouchers to spend at supermarkets.

About 1.3 million disadvantaged pupils are entitled to free school meals but the scheme in England will not run during the school holiday period, which starts in July.

England international Rashford, who has helped raise around £20 million ($25 million) for FareShare, a charity that fights hunger and food waste, received free meals as a child.

"The government has taken a 'whatever it takes' approach to the economy -- I'm asking you today to extend that same thinking to protecting all vulnerable children across England," he wrote in an open letter to lawmakers.

"I encourage you to hear their pleas and find your humanity. Please reconsider your decision to cancel the food voucher scheme over the summer holiday period and guarantee the extension."

Rashford, 22, added: "As a black man from a low-income family in Wythenshawe, Manchester, I could have been just another statistic.

"Instead, due to the selfless actions of my mum, my family, my neighbours, and my coaches, the only stats I'm associated with are goals, appearances and caps."

Rashford, last week named the fifth most valuable player in Europe, told the BBC the letter was "written from the heart".

"What families are going through now, I've once had to go through that -- and it's very difficult to find a way out. It's very important for me to help people who are struggling," he said.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Johnson would respond to the letter.

"He (Rashford) has been using his profile in a positive way to highlight some very important issues," the spokesman said.&nbsp;

"The prime minister understands the issues facing families across the UK, which is why last week the government announced an additional £63 million for local authorities to benefit all families who are struggling to afford food and other basic essentials."

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> finally makes its long-awaited return on June 17 following a three-month coronavirus lockdown.

The landscape has changed since March -- clubs have welcomed back injured players, others have had a chance to regroup and Liverpool have had to come to terms with a low-key title celebration.

AFP Sport looks at the winners and losers as teams emerge from the lockdown.

<h2>Healed stars boost Spurs, Man Utd</h2>

When we last saw Jose Mourinho, the Tottenham manager cut a despondent figure as he admitted he wished he could fast-forward to next season.

At the time, injury-hit Tottenham were on a six-match winless run that saw them knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup, while falling seven points adrift of the top four.

However, no boss has benefited more from the three-month break than Mourinho and eighth-placed Tottenham will return rejuvenated after Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko regained their fitness.

That should be the ideal boost for the race to qualify for the Champions League, especially with a crucial first game of the restart against top-four rivals Manchester United.

United, four points above Tottenham in fifth place, were frustrated when the season ground to a halt.

Inspired by influential January signing Bruno Fernandes, they were riding the momentum of an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions dating back to January.

Crucially, the return of injured England forward Marcus Rashford and France midfielder Paul Pogba promises to add pep to their step at just the right time, with the Tottenham showdown followed by another vital fixture against seventh-placed Sheffield United.

<h2>Relegation rivals scrap for survival</h2>

With dire warnings over the long-term financial health of football ringing in their ears, clubs embroiled in the relegation dogfight have been focused on self-preservation.

Feuding over how to decide the season in the event it has to be abandoned, complaining about potentially playing at neutral venues and arguing that the season was restarting too soon have all been public relations own goals from clubs most in danger of going down.

Brighton will be under immense pressure to perform, having argued so vocally against neutral venues.&nbsp;

Without a win in 2020, they are just two points above the relegation zone and have games against Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City to come.

Watford, out of the bottom three by virtue of goal difference, were also vocal critics of the neutral venue proposal.&nbsp;

The Hornets would fall into the relegation zone if Aston Villa won their game in hand, but favourable home matches against Southampton, Norwich and Newcastle offer hope of beating the drop.

Second-bottom Villa, who have suffered four straight league defeats, have had a chance to regroup at a time when they were in danger of collapsing.

Third-bottom Bournemouth, winless in four matches, will also hope the break provides a springboard to survival.

<h2>Liverpool's title anti-climax</h2>

Instead of jubilant supporters hailing their heroes for ending Liverpool's 30-year wait to be crowned English champions, the Reds' impending title triumph in an empty stadium is likely to feel anti-climactic.

Jurgen Klopp's side are 25 points clear at the top and need a maximum of two wins from their remaining nine games to seal a 19th English title in emphatic fashion.

The trophy could be theirs as soon as June 21 if second-placed Manchester City lose to Arsenal and Liverpool beat Merseyside rivals Everton.

But with the rest of the season to be played behind closed doors, the mood around the club has gone slightly flat.

The prospect of Liverpool having to delay their parade through the city with the trophy until next year due to social-distancing rules is another blow.

No wonder former Arsenal striker Alan Smith, who famously won the title at Anfield with the Gunners on the last day of the 1988/89 season, said: "If Liverpool do eventually get crowned, it's going to prove a massive anti-climax.

"I can't help but feel sorry for Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and all who deserve every plaudit going for a magnificent effort."

Italy's football season resumed after three months of a halt after a Coppa Italia semi-final second leg between Juventus and AC Milan was played on Friday. The Serie A will restart on June 20.&nbsp;

Currently, all matches are being played behind closed doors, without spectators.

"Yesterday, we took the last step towards dispelling any doubts about the completion of the championships," FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said in an interview with Radio Deejay on Saturday.

"I'm happy but there is still one piece missing, which is the participation of the fans and I hope they can return very quickly. I hope it will be the beginning of July -- the first week or mid-July at the latest,"

"This will mean that our country has thrown off those final restrictions and that we've come out of this particularly dark moment for our country."

Sevilla beat local rivals Real Betis 2-0 as La Liga returned after three months away on Thursday, becoming the second of Europe's five major leagues to resume following the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

After the Bundesliga in Germany restarted on May 16, La Liga opened its doors again to players but not supporters at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where the usually vibrant Seville derby was played in front of empty stands.&nbsp;

The game was the first in Spain's top flight since March 10 but 93 days later another professional fixture has been completed without incident, offering further encouragement to the Premier League in England and Serie A in Italy.&nbsp;Both are set to return next week.

Lucas Ocampos gave Sevilla the lead from a 56th-minute penalty and Fernando Reges then added the second goal for the home side, who are third in the table.

This was the first leg of a 39-day sprint to the finish in La Liga, that will see teams playing every three days for five and a half weeks and undergoing stern examinations of their fitness.

Both coaches made use of their new allocation of five substitutes and there was a drinks breaks in each half but the contest lost its fluency late on, in part because Betis never looked like staging a comeback.&nbsp;

Victory strengthens Sevilla's hold on third place as they move four points above Getafe and Real Sociedad below them. Betis sit 12th and face the possibility of being dragged into a relegation battle.&nbsp;

This was as far from a typical Seville derby as could be imagined, a pale shadow of the division's most heated fixture and a clear demonstration of what has been sacrificed to keep the season going.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

<h2>- Virtual supporters -</h2>

&nbsp;

"I always believed we would play again," said La Liga president Javier Tebas, who had also indicated on Thursday that "10 or 15 per cent" of fans could attend stadiums before the season finishes on July 19.&nbsp;

For now though, stands remain empty, the voices of the players and coaches audible and the atmosphere strange. On television, fans at home had the option to add virtual supporters taken from the computer game FIFA, as well as chanting, which ebbed and flowed according to the action.&nbsp;

When the excellent Ocampos and Fernando scored, there was cheering, and when substitutes came and went, there was applause.&nbsp;

Earlier, the players had arrived wearing masks and gloves and their temperatures were taken before entering the stadium. Outside, around 200 supporters had come to greet the team buses but they dispersed shortly after, with 600 police and security personnel in attendance to prevent mass gatherings.&nbsp;

"No fans allowed but we're here and we can't wait," shouted a 60-year-old supporter in a Sevilla shirt.&nbsp;

There was a minute of silence held before kick-off in memory of the victims of the pandemic, with the players standing at a distance from each other around the centre circle. In the 20th minute, there was applause to pay tribute to those working on the front line.&nbsp;

In the stands, the substitutes, still wearing masks, sat spread out in the rows behind their coaches and Sevilla's were among the few celebrating when the goals flew in shortly after half-tiime.&nbsp;

They were comfortable winners as Ocampos scored a penalty after Marc Bartra was ajudged to have pushed Luuk de Jong and, six minutes later, a delightful Ocampos flick at the near post allowed Fernando to head in a second.&nbsp;

La Liga resumes after three months away as Sevilla defeat Betis

The English Premier League players are set to pay tribute to the worldwide anti-racism movements by replacing their surnames on the back of the shirts with the words “Black Lives Matter” during the opening round of fixtures of the British top-flight’s restart.&nbsp;

Apart from the words “Black Lives Matter”, the BLM logo will be printed on the front. The tribute by the Premier League players comes as the worldwide protests against racial injustice continue following the killing of an unarmed African-American man George Floyd under police custody, by a policeman, in Minneapolis on May 25.&nbsp;

Player names to be replaced by 'Black Lives Matter' in Premier League's opening round

The United States Soccer Federation said Wednesday it has scrapped a controversial policy banning players from kneeling during the national anthem.

In a statement, US Soccer said the rule introduced in 2017 was wrong, and reflected a failure of the federation to address the concerns of black people and minorities.

The USSF rule mandating that players must "stand respectfully" during the national anthem was introduced three years ago.

It came after US women's team star Megan Rapinoe knelt during the anthem at a 2016 international in a gesture of solidarity with former NFL star Colin Kaepernick.

"It has become clear that this policy was wrong and detracted from the important message of Black Lives Matter," the USSF said Wednesday as it announced the rule had been repealed.

"We have not done enough to listen - especially to our players - to understand and acknowledge the very real and meaningful experiences of Black and other minority communities in our country.&nbsp;

"We apologize to our players - especially our Black players - staff, fans, and all who support eradicating racism.&nbsp;

"Sports are a powerful platform for good, and we have not used our platform as effectively as we should have. We can do more on these specific issues and we will."

The USSF had faced mounting pressure to review the no-kneeling policy on the heels of nationwide protests which have swept through the United States following the death in police custody of unarmed black man George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

On Monday, the powerful United States Women's National Team Players Association had called on the USSF to repeal its policy and issue an apology.

Kaepernick's take-a-knee protest has become an emblematic expression of solidarity adopted during demonstrations which have rippled across the globe.

Kaepernick had begun kneeling during the anthem in August 2016 in order to draw attention to racial injustice following the deaths of several unarmed black men during confrontations with police.

He was later released by the San Francisco 49ers in early 2017 and has not played a minute in the NFL since.

US Soccer meanwhile said it would now allow its players to protest as they see fit.

"It should be, and will be going forward, up to our players to determine how they can best use their platforms to fight all forms of racism, discrimination, and inequality," the federation said.

"We are here for our players and are ready to support them in elevating their efforts to achieve social justice.&nbsp;

"We cannot change the past, but we can make a difference in the future. We are committed to this change effort, and we will be implementing supporting actions in the near future."

But the Turkish Sports Minister Mehmet Kasapoglu is assured Turkish football fans, he said: "I have no doubt it will take place in the best way in Turkey. We're confident that we will receive good news on June 17." "We are following this closely, it's a very important matter," he insisted during an interview with TRT Sports channel. The Champions League final was set to be held on May 30 in Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, 15 years after hosting Liverpool and AC Milan. Turkey 'confident' that Istanbul will host the Champions League finals despite coronavirus situation

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has been given a one-match ban by the Football Association after joking about the coronavirus in a social media video and will miss his side's first Premier League match after the restart.

In the weeks before the virus took hold across the world, Alli posted a Snapchat clip in which he made fun of an Asian man in an airport departure lounge in February.

The England international was shown wearing a face mask and the video had the title: "Corona whattt, please listen with volume".&nbsp;

The video cut to an unsuspecting man of Asian appearance before panning to a bottle of antiseptic hand wash, underneath which appeared the caption: "This virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me".

Alli later deleted the post and posted an apology to the Chinese social media network Weibo.

He was charged with misconduct by the FA on February 26 and his case has now been heard.

The one-game suspension means Alli will miss Tottenham's game at home to Manchester United on June 19, their first of the resumed season.

Alli has also received a £50,000 ($63,000) fine and will have to attend an educational course.

"Dele Alli has been suspended for one match with immediate effect, fined £50,000 and must undertake a face-to-face education course," an FA statement read.

After the FA issued the ban, Alli again expressed regret for his action.

"In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my behaviour," he said.

"It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined.

"I'm grateful that The FA has confirmed that my actions were not racist because I despise racism of any kind. We all need to be mindful of the words and actions we use and how they can be perceived by others."

Alli's suspension continues a troubling period for the 24-year-old after knife-carrying burglars broke into his house recently.

Following an altercation with Alli, who was shaken but not seriously hurt, the men made off with jewellery.

Premier League clubs enjoyed a record 5.2 billion pounds ($6.65 billion) of revenue in the 2018-19 season, according to data released by Deloitte on Thursday, but income is expected to decline in the short-term due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The English top flight reinforced its reputation as the richest soccer league in the world by posting a 7% year-on-year increase in revenue, primarily driven by UEFA distributions to the clubs.

Four English clubs featured in the finals of Europe’s two club competitions last season. Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur to lift the Champions League trophy, while Chelsea thrashed Arsenal to claim the Europa League title.

The novel coronavirus outbreak, however, has disrupted the 2019-20 season for the major European leagues.

The report anticipates the Premier League to lose around 1 billion pounds in revenue this season, despite plans to restart the competition on June 17.

Almost 500 million pounds will be lost permanently due to loss of matchday revenue and rebates on broadcast and commercial deals.

The other half is expected to be deferred to the 2020-21 financial year, given almost a quarter of the season will be played beyond June 30.

“Football returning – in a safe and sensible way - is clearly important to limiting the financial impact that the pandemic has had,” Dan Jones, partner and head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

“Much remains uncertain, particularly around the timing and scale of the return of fans to stadiums and the impact on commercial and broadcast partners’ wider businesses.”

The European football market as a whole generated a record 28.9 billion euros ($32.99 billion) in the 2018-19 campaign, with the big five leagues in England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy contributing 17 billion euros, a 9% increase from the previous year.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has appointed his mentor and coaching inspiration Juan Manuel Lillo as his new assistant, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

Lillo, 54, will take up the role vacated by Mikel Arteta, who left the Etihad Stadium to become manager at former club Arsenal.

The Spaniard joins from Qingdao Huanghai, having helped the club to the Chinese League One championship and so helping them achieve promotion to the Super League.

Lillo, who has previously managed Real Sociedad, Vissel Kobe and Real Oviedo, has worked with several world class talents during his career, including Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Yaya Toure.

He also coached Guardiola towards the end of his playing career, during their shared time in Mexico at Dorados de Sinaloa.

A Brazilian gay rights activist has filed a criminal complaint against Neymar for homophobia, after the football superstar called his mother's boyfriend an anti-gay slur in comments leaked to the media.

The Sao Paulo prosecutor's office confirmed to AFP it had received the complaint, which it must now examine to decide whether to open a case against the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star.

Neymar's communications team declined to comment on the complaint.

The case was brought by activist Agripino Magalhaes, who said on Instagram he planned to press charges against Neymar and his friends for "criminal homophobia, hate speech and death threats" over comments made in a private conversation on a gaming site.

In the audio recording, Neymar, 28, can be heard using slurs against his mother's new boyfriend, Tiago Ramos, as he and his friends discuss a supposed fight between the couple.

Ramos, 22, and Neymar's mother, Nadine Goncalves, 52, announced in April they were dating.

Brazil's tabloid press was soon running lurid stories about Ramos, a model who is openly bisexual.

Neymar and his friends were discussing rumors that the new couple had had a violent fight, after Ramos was hospitalized last Tuesday with arm wounds sustained at Goncalves's house, according to police.

Neymar said his mother had lied to her family, indicating he did not believe her story that Ramos had tripped on the stairs and cut himself on a pane of glass.

One of his friends can be heard saying that they should assault Ramos with a broomstick in the anus.

Neighbors reportedly said they heard screaming from a fight at Goncalves's house the night Ramos was injured.

However, Neymar's communications team said Ramos and Goncalves had testified before police that the incident was a "domestic accident."

Man City vs UEFA: CAS releases statement as hearing ends; verdict in July

Schalke's American midfielder Weston McKennie has accused Donald Trump of being a racist and criticised the US president for his behaviour following the death of George Floyd, which has sparked protests around the world.

"In my eyes, he can be called racist," McKennie, a 21-year-old US international, said in an interview with German magazine Sport Bild.

"I don't think Trump is the right man for the job of president.

"I don't think he understands his responsibility to the entire country.

"I think he's ignorant. I don't support him one bit. I don't think he's a man of his word."

Floyd, who was buried on Monday, died when a white policeman kneeled on his neck in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the end of May. The death, caught on video, has sparked waves of protests in cities across the US and around the world.

Trump has adopted a tough approach to putting down the protests in US cities and he voiced his support for the police at a round table on law enforcement at the White House on Monday.

McKennie, who was born in Texas, wore an armband demanding "Justice for George" in Schalke's first league game following the death of Floyd.

French player Marcus Thuram and England international Jadon Sancho also called for justice for Floyd after scoring goals in the Bundesliga.

Last weekend, some Bundesliga clubs, including Schalke, showed solidarity with the global protests by dropping to one knee before their matches.

McKennie said he feels it is important for sportsmen and women to draw attention to the Black Lives Matter movement, which has also been supported by a host of US sports stars.

"Basically, it's important that we athletes are also committed to the fight against racism, because we have the exposure," he said.

"That's why it's up to all of us."

US goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who is on loan from Manchester City at Bundesliga side Fortuna Duesseldorf this season, agrees that sports stars should use their platform to speak out.

"It is very urgent that something is done. It is only sad that something like this had to happen first," the 25-year-old told AFP subsidiary SID.

"What happened in the video of George Floyd is simply inhuman.

"I am proud to be an American, but some of the things that have been done by the government in recent years are just not America, for me, and that has to change.

"As athletes we have a platform.

"We can really make a difference and make the world a better place."

Liverpool's clash with Everton on June 21 will be played at Goodison Park after Liverpool City Council gave the go-ahead for both sides to complete their remaining Premier League fixtures at home.

Victory at the home of their Merseyside rivals would see Liverpool clinch a first league title in 30 years if Manchester City lose at home to Arsenal on June 17.

That had led to concerns that fans could congregate around both clubs' grounds in the city in breach of coronavirus restrictions.

Goodison is less than a mile from Liverpool's Anfield stadium.

However, a meeting between the council, police, clubs and fans' groups on Wednesday agreed to allow the match to proceed in Liverpool rather than at a neutral venue.

"We are satisfied that the considerable evidence and guidance provided by the government, Everton and Liverpool football clubs, public health colleagues and Merseyside Police will ensure that the outstanding fixtures for the 2019/20 Premier League season can be safely and securely played at both Goodison Park and Anfield," said Wendy Simon, deputy mayor of Liverpool, who chairs the Ground Safety Advisory Group.

Liverpool said further discussions this week will "provide clear and regular updates for supporters throughout this process".

Barcelona and Real Madrid resume one of the tightest title races in recent memory when La Liga kicks back into action this week in empty stadiums, after a three-month pause due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Just before the season was postponed on March 10, former Real great Jorge Valdano had likened the two teams’ inconsistent form to a race between two limping men, but both sides are set to be refreshed and stronger after the long break.

Barca are boosted by the return of Luis Suarez from a knee injury that looked set to rule him out for the season, and his aggression and power should help them ease their problems in breaking down sides.

Real will again enjoy the services of Eden Hazard after he was sidelined with a fractured ankle in February. Also back is Spain forward Marcos Asensio, who should ease the burden on Karim Benzema, their runaway leading scorer with 14 strikes.

Barca, targeting a third consecutive Spanish title, led Real by two points when the season was postponed.

The break has also given their ageing squad some much-needed rest, while the extra time on the training ground should help them further adapt to the ideas of coach Quique Setien, who succeeded Ernesto Valverde in January.

With no fans allowed into venues and Real playing their home games at the 6,000-capacity Alfredo Di Stefano stadium while the Santiago Bernabeu is being refurbished, it will be a title race unlike any other.

“We will miss that boost and support you get from the crowd, who have a huge influence,” said Setien.

Barca have a slightly more comfortable run-in in their remaining 11 fixtures in the space of five weeks, with home games against Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid plus trips to Sevilla and Villarreal looking like their toughest games.

Real, who beat Barca in March only to blow their lead at the top by losing to Real Betis, have five potentially tricky fixtures: Valencia, Getafe and Villarreal at home, plus trips to Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao.

Manchester United legend Dunne dies aged 78

The United States Soccer Federation is considering scrapping a rule which bans players from kneeling during the national anthem, officials confirmed on Monday, as the US women's team criticised the body for implementing the policy in the first place.

USSF president Cindy Parlow Cone called for the policy to be discussed at a board meeting due to take place on Tuesday, ESPN reported on its website.

A USSF spokesperson later confirmed the federation was considering repealing the policy.

In a controversial move, US Soccer introduced a rule in 2017 which formally states that players must "stand respectfully" during the national anthem.

It came after US women's team star Megan Rapinoe kneeled during the anthem at an international in 2016.

Rapinoe took a knee in solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The US women's soccer team called on the USSF to "immediately repeal" the policy and to "apologize" to their black players.

"We believe that the Federation should immediately repeal the 'Anthem Policy', publish a statement acknowledging the policy was wrong when it was adopted, and issue an apology to our black players and supporters," the United States Women's National Team Players Association said in a statement on Monday.

"Further, we believe the Federation should lay out its plans on how it will now support the message and movement it tried to silence four years ago."

Kaepernick had begun kneeling during the anthem in August 2016 in order to draw attention to racial injustice following the deaths of several unarmed black men during confrontations with police.

Kaepernick's kneeling protest has become an emblematic expression of solidarity adopted during the recent demonstrations across the United States and around the world since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

Protesters and police officers have all taken a knee during the protests while sports stars in Germany's Bundesliga have all kneeled before recent matches.

Players from English Premier League giants Liverpool also knelt in a photo distributed through the club's social media channels last week.

ESPN said if US Soccer's board votes to repeal the policy, it would take effect immediately but would still need to be voted on at the federation's annual meeting next year.

US Soccer to review 'no kneeling' anthem policy

After bringing back Indians from Sri Lanka and Maldives, Indian Navy ships are all set to bring back Indians from Iran.

In the first phase of operation "Samudra Setu"&nbsp;from Iran, INS Shardul will bring back Indians from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Porbandar, Gujarat. It&nbsp;is part of the third phase of "Vande Bharat"&nbsp;mission announced by EAM Dr Jaishankar last month.

As far as INS Shardul is concerned, most of the over 200 Indians coming back are Gujarat&nbsp;fishermen. There are also some seafarers and workers. A 15-member team from the Indian mission in Tehran and consulates in Bandar Abbas and Zahedan have been present to coordinate the repatriation.

The second phase of Samudra Setu from Iran is expected to facilitate the return of fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

There are more than 1,000 Indian fishermen in Iran’s southern provinces of Hormozgan and Bushehr. They are spread over a large geographical area of around 500 kms and live in remote areas such as Asaluyeh, Chiruyeh, Charak, Lavan island, Moqam, Bustaneh and the popular tourist place, Kish island.

They operate from small jetties. These fishermen hail primarily from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Kerala. They have been earning their livelihood in Iran over the last 4-5 years.

The Indian mission in Tehran and its Consulate in Bandar Abbas have been in constant touch with these fishermen during the COVID-19 pandemic and had provided essential supplies to them in March&nbsp;despite inter-province lockdown and other restrictions.

Last month saw India beginning repatriation from the Maldives via INS Jalashwa and INS Magar. It&nbsp;was expanded to Sri Lanka earlier this month. More than 2,500 people in the two&nbsp;countries have been brought back via two&nbsp;Navy ships.

Iran was among the earliest countries to be significantly impacted by the coronavirus. The first case in Iran was&nbsp;reported on February.

Special flights to repatriate Indian nationals from Iran started in early March. There were as many as seven flights in March and two in May.

More than 1,500 Indians have been brought back home via these flights, including more than 1100 pilgrims (around 900 from Ladakh, more than 100 from J&amp;K and around 50 from Maharashtra), around 200 students, mostly from J&amp;K, and more than 50 seafarers from all over India.

The Indian mission in Tehran and its Consulate in Bandar Abbas have been in constant touch with these fishermen during the COVID-19 pandemic and had provided essential supplies to them in March despite inter-province lockdown and other restrictions. Last month saw India beginning repatriation from the Maldives via INS Jalashwa and INS Magar. It was expanded to Sri Lanka earlier this month. More than 2,500 people in the two countries have been brought back via two Navy ships. Iran was among the earliest countries to be significantly impacted by the coronavirus. The first case in Iran was reported on February. Special flights to repatriate Indian nationals from Iran started in early March. There were as many as seven flights in March and two in May. More than 1,500 Indians have been brought back home via these flights, including more than 1100 pilgrims (around 900 from Ladakh, more than 100 from J&K and around 50 from Maharashtra), around 200 students, mostly from J&K, and more than 50 seafarers from all over India.

Bundesliga: Werder slip towards drop, Union eye safety as teams take knee for Floyd

Manchester City and England footballer Raheem Sterling on Sunday insisted that racism is&nbsp;"the only disease right now".

The 25-year-old, who has often and powerfully spoken out on discrimination, admitted his remarks may appear ill-chosen as the globe fights the coronavirus pandemic.

"I know this might sound a little bit cheesy but the only disease right now is the racism that we are fighting," said Sterling in a BBC TV interview to be broadcast on Monday.

Sterling is the latest sports star to voice support for protests against racism in the United States and across the world following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month.

"This is the most important thing at this moment in time because this is something that is happening for years and years. Just like the pandemic, we want to find a solution to stop it," he added.

"At the same time, this is what all these protesters are doing. They are trying to find a solution and a way to stop the injustice they are seeing, and they are fighting for their cause.

"As long as they are doing it peacefully and safely and not hurting anybody and not breaking into any stores, they continue to protest in this peaceful way."

Sterling has previously been prominent in calling out racism in both the domestic and international game.

Last year he advised fellow players against walking off the pitch in the event of racial abuse.

But Sterling believes it is now time for the talking to develop into real change - in society and in the notoriously tribal world of professional football.

"There's only so much communities and other backgrounds can take - especially black people.

"It's been going on for hundreds of years and people are tired and people are ready for change.

"This is something that needs more than just talking. We need to actually implement change and highlight the places that do need changes.

"But this is something that I myself will continue to do, and spark these debates and get people in my industry looking at themselves and thinking what they can do to give people an equal chance in this country."

Manchester City will attempt to overturn their two-year UEFA ban from European football when a three-day hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland begins on Monday.

European soccer’s governing body UEFA ruled in February that City had committed serious breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and failed to cooperate with its investigation, handing them a ban and a 30 million euro (24.9 million pounds) fine.

Missing out on a Champions League season would cost City, who have denied wrongdoing, as much as 100 million pounds ($127 million) in prize money and broadcast revenue, as well as matchday and other revenues.

The FFP regulations are designed to stop clubs running up big losses through spending on players.

They also ensure that sponsorship deals are based on their real market value and are genuine commercial agreements — and not ways for owners to pump cash into a club to get around the rules.

UEFA opened an investigation into City last March after the publication of ‘Football Leaks’ documents led to allegations that the club’s Abu Dhabi owners had inflated sponsorship agreements to comply with the FFP requirements.

The leaked documents included club emails which referred to money being "routed" through sponsors. Reuters was unable to verify if such payments were made here.

As well as questioning the nature of the documents, City have been unhappy at the way in which UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) conducted the investigation.

“The allegations are not true. They are simply not true,” City CEO Ferran Soriano said in a statement in February.

“We provided the evidence but in the end this FFP Investigatory Chamber relied more on out of context stolen emails than all the other evidence we provided of what actually happened and I think it is normal that we feel like we feel.

“Ultimately based on our experience and our perception this seems to be less about justice and more about politics,” added the Spaniard.

The Abu Dhabi United Group, the investment vehicle owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is the majority owner of the City Football Group, with a stake of around 77%.

Man City enter CAS hearing hoping to overturn UEFA ban

La Liga will use virtual images of stands in television broadcasts with added ‘fan audio’, produced by the makers of the FIFA video game, when it returns to action on Thursday.

Domestic broadcasters in Spain will offer their viewers the choice of a ‘natural’ broadcast of games played behind closed doors with no fans but the international audience will receive only the enhanced broadcasts with added audio and graphics.

La Liga said in a statement on Sunday that the use of technology “will allow matches to be seen in an attractive way that closely resembles how they looked and sounded before the competition was postponed.”

The stands will be “virtualised” and will offer to-scale images of seated fans wearing the home club’s colours. La Liga collaborated with Norwegian company VIZRT on the technology.

“In moments when the game is stopped, this image of fans can be transformed into a canvas that matches the colour of the home team and will carry institutional messages among other offerings,” added the league.

The virtual sound has been developed with video game company EA SPORTS FIFA, in a project called Sounds of the Stands.

“Through this, the audio library of LaLiga official sponsor EA, which was recorded in real stadiums, has been used and has been digitally adapted so that it can be implemented in real time during the match,” said the statement.

“It will be adapted to the flow of the game as certain situations occur, such as a goal or a foul, creating what is known as Atmospheric Audio.”

Barcelona lead the table by two points over Real Madrid with 11 rounds of matches left, after the season was paused in March due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, and the two rivals are braced for one of the tightest title races in recent memory.

The fight for Champions League football is even closer, with at least five teams vying for third and fourth place.

The restart begins with Thursday’s derby between Sevilla and Real Betis, while champions Barcelona visit Real Mallorca on Saturday and Real Madrid host Eibar on Sunday.

“We have made these broadcasting changes so fans can enjoy LaLiga,” said the legaue’s President Javier Tebas.

“We work with global partners to offer a great viewer experience. We are in an exceptional situation, but for us it has been important to be able to adapt and offer a compelling, cutting-edge broadcast to our fans,” he added.

English club Manchester City’s appeal against their two-year UEFA Champions League ban will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport from Monday. While CAS has even taken as long as three months to announce a decision, Man City’s appeal is expected to be given a quick verdict given the number of other clubs’ dependence on the outcome.&nbsp;

<h2>But what to expect from – “Manchester City FC vs UEFA”?&nbsp;</h2>

In February, UEFA’ Club Financial Control Body Adjudicatory Chamber found the English club guilty of committing ‘serious breaches of Financial Fair Play Regulations’ by overstating its sponsorship revenue between 2012 and 2016. The verdict added that City had ‘failed to cooperate in the investigation of this case by the CFCB’.

As per FFP rules, a club cannot receive money directly from their owner (the UAE’s Sheikh Mansour here) and polish it up as sponsorship income from other entities. The result went against Man City and the Blues were handed a two-year ban from European competition and a fine of €30 million (£26.8 million).

Man City and their officials have always maintained that they are innocence and have many a time stated that they have concrete evidence to support their position. Previously, they have even criticized UEFA’s investigation and stated that they had “always anticipated the ultimate need to seek out an independent body and process” to decide the outcome.&nbsp;

Man City had even lodged an appeal to the CAS in 2019 but it was binned because there was no decision to appeal against it. In February, just two weeks after UEFA announced their verdict, Man City lodged a fresh appeal with CAS – the hearing starts Monday.&nbsp;

<h2>When to expect a decision?</h2>

A three-day hearing is already lengthy by CAS standards. But as seen with hearings related to the Olympics or World Cup, a decision in the month of August could be expected. A detailed report could follow the verdict. However, CAS announced their decision on Galatasaray’s appeal against UEFA’s ban in a week.

<h2>Could it hamper Man City's Premier League future&nbsp;campaigns?</h2>

Premier League points deduction is a possibility if CAS rule the decision against Man City. The Premier League, as per their own FFP regulations, have been investigating the Blues but it seems like they are waiting for their job to become easy following CAS’s verdict on Man City. In a nutshell, if a club has foxed UEFA in process of playing European football, it will be punished by the Premier League – separately. So that is another major concern for City.

<h2>What does it mean for other clubs?</h2>

If CAS was to uphold City’s ban, then the Pep Guardiola-managed outfit won’t play in Champions League next season. If it happens, then the fifth-placed team in the Premier League would quality for UCL in their place. If FA Cup winners have already qualified for European football, then the next-ranked side not qualified for Europan competition goes into Europa League group stage. Even the seventh or eighth finish could get you a spot in the qualifying round.

Premier League current standings: 1. Liverpool 2. City 3. Leicester 4. Chelsea 5. Manchester United 6. Wolverhampton Wanderers 7. Sheffield United 8. Tottenham Hotspur 9. Arsenal 10. Burnley.

Manchester City vs UEFA: What to expect from the CAS hearing

Football is one of the sports to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic massively. While the financial ramifications of the wiped out calendar are unprecedented, football is slowly coming back to life with Bundesliga’s resumption. Indian football, meanwhile, saw the final of Indian Super League (ISL) 2020 being played behind closed doors just when the dreaded virus had made its presence felt in India but since then it has been a complete stop when it comes to playing matches or even training outdoors given the strict lockdown measures.&nbsp;

Indian football team’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier against defending Asian Champions Qatar has been already postponed and the future calendar when it comes to international matches still remains under dark clouds.&nbsp;

India National Team coach Igor Stimac, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, discussed how the pandemic impacted his plans, the structure of Indian football and many more.

“I was joking that if there is someone that will benefit from this Covid-19 break then it is Indian football as we are used to long breaks. We have a break of 6-7 months every year and we should not have a problem with injuries as the players are used to this pause”, Stimac said.

<img alt="Igor Stimac: Indian team has changed from kick and chase football to a more possession based game." data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="360690ad-57cb-41dd-a4f8-c66ff97edfc7" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_DV1447642.jpg" />

Since Stimac took over the charge of the Indian football team, the Blue Tigers have had some inspirational performances on the pitch, the most notable ones being the goalless draw against Qatar (away) and 1-1 stalemate against Afghanistan (away). While there have been disappointments in the form of 1-1 draw against Bangladesh in front of a capacity crowd in Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, the Indian football team has shown a lot of improvement when it comes to playing a positive brand of football and scrapping the long-ball tactics in big matches.&nbsp;

Stimac is of the view that building a team for the future takes time as most of the players are young and lacking confidence. However, the Croatian is not content with some of the results from the 2022 World Cup qualifiers as he said that the lack of experience and charismatic decisions cost India.&nbsp;

“I am excited even much more than before after 12 Months as India Coach. We have proved that we can change many things in such a short time. The task was not easy to change from a kick and chase football to a more possession-based football. We have introduced many young players with more technical abilities. It was not easy and we knew we were going to suffer but this was the only way to stabilise the results in the future,” Stimac said.

"We are building up a new team which should achieve its high level in the next 4-5 years. We have 25 players who are between 18-23 years old. I am not happy with regards to the results as we were expecting some more points from the Qualification Tournament. Looking back we did not take our opportunities. I thought we could surprise Oman but lack of experience and lack of charismatic decisions on the field cost us. India is no longer the team that loses easy games, but we are not scoring enough goals,” he added.

The 1998 FIFA World Cup semifinalist Stimac has been pretty vocal about reducing the number of foreign players in India’s domestic tournaments like ISL and I-League for the betterment of Indian talent. Stimac further revealed that the footballing authorities are in talks with the Indian government about citizenship regulations for players.&nbsp;

“I am feeling depressed and tired at repeatedly saying we have to reduce the number of foreign players in Indian domestic football. It will take time to grow up as a football nation, the season has to be longer for players to play much more games than now. If the Government can change the citizenship regulations, then we can get 7-8 players of Indian origin who are playing abroad and that would change our results dramatically”.

The Croatian also elaborated why the season for Indian Football should be longer&nbsp;compared to other domestic seasons across the world. “We have been working behind closed doors on many aspects. One is regarding the selection of players. We have been talking to the government to change the citizenship regulations. We were also in touch with FSDL (Football Sports Development Limited) to increase the length of the season and also to have a long-term calendar season plus the need to restructure the Durand Cup and the Super Cup. Going forward what will be crucial is the number of games. We cannot stop our season at the end of February and football needs to be played until mid-May. I am told that it cannot happen as it overlaps with the broadcast of the IPL but broadcast is not important, what is important is that players play more games to improve their football and bring more quality to the national team,”

Stimac had big plans for the Indian team for the year 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic has shattered everything. The Croatian said that India were scheduled to go to Turkey and Croatia in April and May for pre-season training camps and play 10 friendly matches only for the dreaded virus to wipe off the sporting calendar and the plans.&nbsp;

“The pandemic has destroyed the plans we had made which were accepted by both the government and the AIFF. We were to go on pre-season training camps to Turkey and Croatia in April and May and we were supposed to play ten friendly games. We are now using this time to improve the education of our players including theoretical points and I am very happy that the players are all following individual training plans that we have sent them and communicating daily on our team groups”.

“The pandemic could see certain rules and regulations be changed globally to rely on home-grown players. This is the perfect opportunity for India to dramatically change the structure of Indian Football. Half the ISL clubs are facing financial difficulties and if all the clubs are not on the same level financially then what is the point of the competition. The competition is good only if everyone starts with the same amount of money and the same regulations,” the Head Coach concluded.&nbsp;

The Croatian said that India were scheduled to go to Turkey and Croatia in April and May for pre-season training camps and play 10 friendly matches only for the dreaded virus to wipe off the sporting calendar and the plans. “The pandemic could see certain rules and regulations be changed globally to rely on home-grown players. This is the perfect opportunity for India to dramatically change the structure of Indian Football. Half the ISL clubs are facing financial difficulties and if all the clubs are not on the same level financially then what is the point of the competition. The competition is good only if everyone starts with the same amount of money and the same regulations,” the Head Coach concluded.

Igor Stimac: Indian team has changed from kick and chase football to a more possession based game

India National Team coach Igor Stimac, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, discussed how the pandemic impacted his plans, the structure of Indian football and much more.

Digvijay Singh Deo: Igor, how have you been through this entire period?

Igor Stimac: The coronavirus crisis has created a multitude of problems all over the world, many countries, including India and Croatia, are suffering. Fortunately, the situation in Croatia is improving, the lockdown measures here have been eased and we are trying to return to somewhat of a normal life.

DSD: From what I have been reading, Croatia seems to have handled this crisis very well. Just above 2000 cases and deaths limited to under 100.

Igor Stimac: Yes, our government deserves the praise of how proactive they have been during this crisis. However, we are also blessed that we are a small country and so not have a very dense population, hence it was easier for us to isolate and remain in a secure environment.

DSD: Even the football season is about to resume at the end of this month in your country...

Igor Stimac: It has been announced that the Croatian league will begin at the end of May, which is fantastic news. There will be no crowd at the venues, it is important that we do not put anyone's health at risk. The return of the league is great news not just for the football league, but also for sport in Croatia in general. People have been desperate for top-level competitions and I'm delighted that they will get to see some action.

DSD: Lots of debate surrounding the leagues at the moment, if leagues should freeze the table and end the season as we have seen in Holland and France, or resume matches so that the campaign can be completed, the English premier league is attempting to deal with that issue right now and there is obviously a lot of money involved.

Igor Stimac: These are highly lucrative leagues and the authorities are losing money on a daily basis while the leagues remain suspended. So, even playing the game behind closed doors would be highly beneficial for the major leagues in Europe. In Croatia, the situation is completely different, we are a much smaller country and it is easier to hold matches here in a bio-secure environment. We are all missing top-level football and I just hope that all the players return to action very soon.

DSD: The next few months seem to be a big worry now in your country which sees a lot of tourists come in. The economy needs the money but people coming in also present a health risk.it’s a tightrope isn't it...

Igor Stimac: It is a huge problem for Croatia but hopefully we will go through this period without many economic difficulties. One-third of Croatia's income comes from tourism. Every summer, thousands of people come to the country and get a taste of the culture, food and the stunning scenic beauty. &nbsp;There is a discussion to declare Croatia a COVID-19 free country, which will allow tourists to enter and boost the economy. Hopefully, that will be possible by July and we can get some money pumping into the economy.

DSD: As things start opening up, everyone will have to grapple with that decision, what is the balance between money and health?

Igor Stimac: Yes, it is a very delicate situation. Every government needs to protect its own people, inviting people from those countries which have been greatly affected by the crisis into Croatia, can endanger our own population. This is the concern with opening up international travel. These decisions have to be taken by the government while keeping the best interests of the people in mind.

DSD: We just saw the german Bundesliga season resume this past weekend - and it felt almost surreal to see the empty stadiums, hear the echoes of the ball being kicked around, the coaches yelling instructions from the touchline... What are your thoughts on what appears to be football's new reality for at least the next few months?

Igor Stimac: We need to get used to a new way of life, a new way of playing and watching football. This is going to be 'the new normal' for a while now, we cannot change it and must accept the situation. We need to be disciplined and cautious so that the second wave of the virus does not affect a large number of people. Football is very close to all our hearts but it's not the most important thing in the world. The health and safety of people has to be the ultimate priority. Let's follow the health protocols and fulfil our duties as global citizens.

DSD: As an elite manager, do you think that teams and players will have to prepare any differently for matches in this sort of environment? Because we're expecting leagues across the continent to also restart behind closed doors next month, how do teams adapt to that?

Igor Stimac: I think the players will miss the atmosphere in the stadiums, there is a certain adrenaline rush that players get when they step out in a stadium in front of the fans, but in terms of the way the game is played, it is not going to be that different. I believe that we are going to see more injuries because the break was very long and players have not had time to return to their peak fitness. The European players are not used to such a long break of two months. I was joking that if there is someone that will benefit from this COVID-19 break then it is Indian football as we are used to long breaks.we have a break of 6-7 months every year and we should not have a problem with injuries as the players are used to this pause.

DSD: This month last year was when you first took charge of the Indian football team...How do you feel about your first 12 months in the job.

Igor Stimac: I am more excited than I was 12 months back. We have proved that we can change many many things in such a short period of time. The task was not easy to change from a 'kick and chase' style of football to a more possession-based game. We have introduced many young players with more technical abilities. It was not easy and we knew we were going to suffer but this was the only way to stabilise the results in the future.we are building up a new team which should achieve its peak in the next 4-5 years.we have 25 players who are between 18-23 yeas old. I am not happy with regards to the results as we were expecting some more points from the qualification tournament .looking back we did not take our opportunities. I thought we could surprise Oman but lack of experience and lack of charismatic decisions on the field cost us.india is no longer the team that loses easy games, but we are not scoring enough goals either. All three goals we scored from qualifiers came from set-pieces.i am feeling depressed and tired at repeatedly saying we have to reduce the number of foreign players in Indian domestic football. It will take time to grow as a football nation, the season has to be longer for players to play more games than they currently play. If the government can change the citizenship regulations then we can get 7-8 players of Indian origin who are playing abroad and that would change our results dramatically.

DSD: Indian football undoubtedly needs structural changes, where do you see Indian football in five years, what is your road-map?

Igor Stimac: we have been working behind closed doors on many aspects. One is regarding the selection of players. We have been talking to the government to change the citizenship regulations. There is a need to change the system of grassroots football as well so that a high number of youngsters start playing the game. Parallelly, we were also in touch with football sports development limited to increase the length of the season and also to have a long term calendar season plus the need to restructure the Durand Cup and the super cup. Going forward what will be crucial is the number of games in a campaign. We cannot stop our season at the end of February and football needs to be played until mid-may. I am told that it cannot happen as it overlaps with the broadcast of the IPL, but broadcast is not that important, what is crucial s that players play more games to improve their football and bring more quality to the national team.

DSD: What will the overall impact of the coronavirus be on Indian football - World Cup qualifiers in March and June have been cancelled, rest of the calendar looking grim.

Igor Stimac: The pandemic has destroyed the plans we had made which were accepted by both the government and the AIFF. We were to go on pre-season training camps to turkey and Croatia in April and May and we were supposed to play ten friendly games. DSD: You were, of course, part of a golden generation of Croatian football - the team that took the country to their first major tournaments after independence...Would you say your third-placed finish on World Cup debut in 1998 arguably had an even bigger impact on Croatian football than the runner-up spot from two years ago?

Igor Stimac: It was a special tournament. It was the first time we played in a world cup in 1998 as a nation and our performances stunned the entire world, but as a team, we weren't surprised at all. Six of the players, including me, were part of the team that won the u-20 world championship in 1987, so we were confident in our abilities and knew that we could reach the latter stages of the tournament. Many people are now comparing the 1998 and 2018 sides and pitting them against each other. I believe that if there was a hypothetical match between the two sides, my 1998 team would win, but then again I might be a bit biased. There is no doubt that both teams had a great impact on Croatia. Both of those teams are filled with world-class players and it is incredible that a small nation like Croatia was able to do so well at the world cup. It's not just football, Croatia has a fantastic sporting culture. There are 100 Olympic medalists in my city, split, which has a population of about 180,000. It just shows how talented we are as a nation. It is such a stark contrast when you compare it to India, which has a population of over a billion people but has won less than 30 Olympic medals.

DSD: After the heroics at the 2018 World Cup - Croatia would no doubt have gone into the Euros that were supposed to be held this summer with expectations sky-high. We know the tournament has been pushed back by a year - how do you think that impacts Croatia's chances especially with stars like Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, Mario Mandzukic, - even Ivan Perisic to an extent - not getting any younger.

Igor Stimac: Talented youngsters are moving up in the ranks of Croatian football, so as a fan or as a coach for that matter., I'm not really worried about the future. Modric, Mandzukic and Rakitic have been wonderful servants to the country, but the future of Croatian football is in safe hands. Whenever the young players have been called upon to the national team, they have always performed very well and sometimes even better than the experienced ones. The young players are great prospects and they have the hunger to excel at the highest level. I believe that sometimes you benefit from throwing the youngsters in the line of fire.

DSD: Since we are talking about the euros - can I get you to discuss who you think are realistic title contenders for the tournament? Do you see the break in football due to the coronavirus this year have any sort of lasting impact 12 to 15 months later?

Igor Stimac: It is difficult for me to say what the situation will look like 12-15 months from now. It definitely is going to be a long break for many countries. I just hope that there aren't many injuries and teams are able to bring their full strength squads to the tournament. I'm looking forward to the fact that all of us will be able to celebrate the game once again. I can only speculate on how different teams will be heading into the euros, but what is important is to stand united and celebrate the game.

Igor Stimac: Indian team has changed from kick and chase football to a more possession based game

Welsh football coach and pundit, Matt Holland, in a conversation with WION's Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, spoke about a lot of things ranging from the resumption of football leagues, players safety and fitness, the money riding on major European leagues, future of transfer market and much more...

Digvijay Singh Deo: Matt, how are things over in Thailand? Not too many cases over there in comparison with India where we have seen an explosion in the last one week.

Matt Holland: Yes the situation is stable from the information that is being given to us. The most positive thing is that there haven't been as many fatalities as we have seen in other countries. The Thai community has been very disciplined during this crisis and people have helped each other out. There is no official lockdown in the country but there is a curfew at night. &nbsp;Shopping malls, stadiums obviously remain shut.

DSD: So how is a football professional like you adjusting to this life indoors. Have you reinvented yourself as a coach?

Matt Holland: Yes, I'd say so. I have gone through a bit of transition in my life. There has been a lot of reflection over the last few months since I was at my last club in Thailand. I went home to the UK during the off-season. I have had a project that has been in the pipeline for the last few years, so I have started that during the last six weeks. It is a formal consultancy programme and I have already got clients from the US, UK and India. I'm just trying to help the players and coaches get to the next level in football.

DSD: Lots of positive talk coming in from England about the resumption of the Premier League with the government also indicated that it could boost morale. Question is will it be a wise step?

Matt Holland: That's a very difficult question. It's ironic that those people who keep questioning how much footballers earn, those same people in the government want the sport to resume so that it can lift the spirits of the nation. In terms of the health and safety concerns of footballers, the authorities will have to be very cautious in whatever step they take, because nothing can endanger the lives of the players and people involved in the game.

<img alt="Matt Holland speaks to WION" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f894e500-562c-46b6-a6c0-9cf6547ddca1" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1QX2LT.jpg" />

DSD: A lot of players including Sergio Aguero have come out and indicated that they are not keen to play. Is&nbsp;it fair to prioritise revenues ahead of safety?

Matt Holland: Yes, it is natural for these players to be worried about not just their own health, but also of their families. I remember I was petrified for the health of my young child when the virus first broke out. Most of the footballers have young children and it's natural for the players to worry about their safety.

DSD: Doctors have written to the premier league saying it is not going to be safe. Should there be a return unless there is a 100 per cent guarantee that players will be safe?

Matt Holland: If teams return to training, there could be as many as 60 to 100 people at the centres. This includes the coaching staff and various club employees, so it's not just the players we have to worry about. The doctors are obviously raising valid concerns and their points must be heard as medical professionals. I just think at this point no one really has answers as to when it will be completely safe to resume the football season.

DSD: It is pretty obvious isn't it matty that ultimately the clubs want the season to continue, it's simply about the money. There is a 750 million pound shortfall in television rights and clubs are already bleeding with no revenue.

Matt Holland: Yes there is a lot of money at stake not just for the premier league clubs, but also the lower league sides. The transfer fees of players have skyrocketed in the last few years, that just gives us an idea of how much money elite European clubs have. I think if the coronavirus crisis hadn't happened, we would have seen a world record transfer take place. This might have involved Kylian Mbappe or one of the Liverpool front three. No one would have questioned the amount if Mbappe had been bought for 200 million euros. So that's the kind of money there is in the game at the moment. The finances have definitely taken a hit and 750 million pounds is a lot to lose, but I think clubs will still be able to cope with the crisis.

DSD: The transfer fees of players are going to fall drastically now aren't they, but even then the question is will the clubs have enough money to purchase top players?

Matt Holland: It is unlikely that we see a lot of transfer activity this summer. The fees of the players will drop, but I&nbsp;think the nature of player contracts will also change. I feel bad for the lower league clubs because I know a lot of them are struggling financially. They have had to use the UK government's job retention scheme. I think all of us have to take a positive attitude towards changes in the global game. There are going to be major changes to the sport in the post-COVID-19 world and we have to embrace that. Many teams might come through stronger after the crisis and the sport will benefit from these experiences.

DSD: UEFA wants leagues to finish on the pitch but has admitted that where not possible, use points per game to decide the league positions. It is pretty simple in the Premier League and it will be a great travesty if Liverpool don't get awarded the title.

Matt Holland: I think with the lead Liverpool have got, they are going to be crowned champions regardless of the way the season ends.

DSD: The problem comes below doesn't it? In the race for European spots as well as relegation.8 points separate teams in the places 15-20. Every one will say no we were on course to beat the drop and ultimately all clubs are selfish and want to stay in the league with the huge money on offer.

Matt Holland: I think I was listening to a radio interview when an expert said that if some clubs were offered 60 or 70 million pounds to get relegated, they would probably take it. So money is very important for these clubs. Let's not forget that there are still nine to ten matches each team has left, and there could be some crucial proverbial 'six-pointers' down at the bottom. So there's still a lot to play for. A couple of games can change the look of the table. There have been so many seasons in the premier league when the relegation places haven't been decided till the final day. Each team around the bottom of the table will still believe that they have a chance of staying up and will back themselves till the final day. Remaining in the premier league doesn't just affect the club and the finances, but also individual players. It has a long-term effect on players' careers, their contracts and their reputation. There is also a lot on the line for the coach, who will be desperate to avoid relegation because that affects his chances of getting a top job.

DSD: See right now there is an unprecedented situation in world sport. You have played over 75 per cent of the matches. If you stop now, is it unfair on teams who have struggled through the season?

Matt Holland: Yes, I think that is something we can take into consideration. We are done with three-quarters of the season and it is a valid point that certain teams haven't done well so far and that's why they are struggling. However these teams will back themselves to turn things around, they will argue that this break has been a welcome one for them and the team morale has improved. Sometimes a break does help a team in re-calibrating and re-fuelling. It is virtually impossible to prove those teams right or wrong in the current situation. A team like Norwich, who have played free-flowing attacking football throughout the season, but will probably go down because of their defensive naivety, they might benefit when the season resumes because other teams might not be as willing to as physical because of the dangers of the virus.

DSD: Should the league just end it right here and do a relegation playoff say in mid-June involving teams 15-20. The thing is one game could turn the table upside down and what if there is then another virus enforced break?

Matt Holland: I think the playoff format should definitely be considered for relegation and promotion spots. We see a different version of a playoff-format play out all around the world, we have it in Australia, USA and even in the Indian super league. I don't think any format should be ruled out at this point in time. It will be impossible to reach a solution which satisfies everyone in this scenario. Some teams will definitely feel hard done by, but that is bound to happen.

DSD: Let's look at Germany and examples of why it is unsafe. Bundesliga announced plans to restart but then three players of cologne tested positive. Its a bit like Russian roulette at the moment isn't it.

Matt Holland: Right now, no leagues are active, but if Germany starts the Bundesliga, which I think will happen anytime in the coming days, then we will see a domino effect across Europe. If the Bundesliga is able to function in a smooth manner, then that will set a precedent for the other top leagues. Here in Asia, South Korea is about to start its football league. But it could prove to be very dangerous and it's a huge gamble. Health and safety must be the top priority for governments. But if it is possible to hold football matches, then I think countries should make the effort to start competitions again. There are people who don't depend on the sport, but we sports lovers are used to action every week. It is part of our daily lives and can form part of family-bonding activities. We look forward to sporting events all week, sport is a cornerstone for spending quality time with friends and family.

DSD: Spain has detailed protocols for training to resume, individual sessions then group sessions with finally a team training session. How long&nbsp;will it take for players to return to peak fitness? And correspondingly how much time will it take then to get match fit.we are looking at what mid-June or late June.

Matt Holland: The fitness levels of the players will be different because of the varying level of facilities available at players' homes. To take the example of India, a player like Sunil Chhetri will be able to maintain a decent level of fitness because he will probably have some training equipment at home, but other players might not be as fortunate as him so their fitness will suffer. Going back to European football, I think if there's one person who should not get a pay cut is the fitness and conditioning coach. The fitness coach's job becomes even more important during this lockdown period. I have seen the kind of fitness programs the clubs have incorporated and I don't think it is enough to maintain the fitness levels of footballers. In my opinion, a whole pre-season will be needed for players to be match-fit. I would say around 4 weeks will be required for players to be mentally and physically ready for high-level competition.

DSD: If European football resumes in the next month or so, then do you expect players to undergo tests every two to three days.

Matt Holland: I think the question we have to ask ourselves is are people, who have continued to go to the office in the last few weeks, being tested every two or three days? The answer is no. Then I don't see any reason for footballers to be tested that regularly. Of course, I am not a medical professional so I'm just giving my opinion on the matter. I hope the clubs are able to figure out a way which allows a minimal number of people to be inside the training complex at a particular point of time. For example, the kitchen staff at the club can be asked to stay at home. An environment needs to be created where players and coaches are coming into the complex, completing their sessions and then going straight back home.

DSD: What are the lessons that the world of football can learn from this episode .has coronavirus burst the artificial bubble of football, is it time for us to reflect on the inflated footballing ecosystem.

Matt Holland: Ultimately I think this is a time to embrace the 'new normal' in the world of football. There isn't going to be a light-switch effect, this crisis is going to have long-lasting repercussions. I think the 'new normal' is already here and we have to adapt to it. When we come out of this crisis, we still have to be cautious and be aware of the dangers of transmitting the virus. I think the money is there in football because it is the most popular sport in the world and people can't get enough of it. I hope the top clubs do enough to help out the masses during this crisis. There might not be a revolutionary change in the way football clubs function after this, but clubs should fulfil a basic sense of social responsibility. I certainly think it is a time for reflection for the football world and maybe the introduction of some more financial regulations that will make the sport more sustainable.

Welsh football coach and pundit, Matt Holland, in a conversation with WION's Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, spoke about a lot of things ranging from the resumption of football leagues, players safety and fitness, the money riding on major European leagues, future of transfer market and much more.

Shopping malls, stadiums obviously remain shut. DSD: A lot of players including Sergio Aguero have come out and indicated that they are not keen to play. Is it fair to prioritise revenues ahead of safety? The fees of the players will drop, but I think the nature of player contracts will also change. Bundesliga resumption could have a domino effect on other European Leagues: Matt Holland

With COVID-19 pandemic continuing to keep everyone indoors, sporting action has witnessed an unprecedented halt with almost every tournament and leagues getting either cancelled or postponed. However, some of the countries are contemplating resuming sporting action, behind closed doors, with strict hygienic measures. Sporting bodies have already suffered huge losses due to cancellation of events with some of the football clubs standing down their staff due to financial crisis.

Former captain of the Indian football team and the recipient of Padma Shri, Bhaichung Bhutia, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, opened up on life in lockdown, racially provoked attacks on people from North East, struggles of a sportsperson after a prolonged break, football post-COVID-19, and much more…

Digvijay Singh Deo: Bhaichung, good to be able to speak to you, I gather you too were stranded when the lockdown was imposed...

Bhaichung: I have been in Siliguri because I got stuck here while going to Kolkata from Sikkim. My family&nbsp;are in Kolkata, so it is unfortunate that I cannot be with them. But apart from that, it has been a pleasant experience here in Siliguri, it is a beautiful town and since I'm from Sikkim, I love the hills. Luckily I also have some friends here.

DSD: How has it been for you, now it has been over a month and you have always been an outdoors person...

Bhaichung: It has actually been a welcome change for me. I have been travelling quite a lot and it has been hectic for me recently. So it is good that i have this downtime for myself. I also didn't get time to work out because of my earlier schedule, but these days i am trying to improve my fitness levels. I'm also trying to help out as many people as I can in these times of crisis, through my football club - United Sikkim. Any person who needs assistance can contact the number we have put out on social media and we will try to do what we can to help.

DSD: But you must be really happy that while you are stranded in Siliguri, your state of Sikkim has been exemplary in stopping the spread of the virus...

Bhaichung: Yes, Sikkim has done a commendable job in ensuring the disease does not spread rapidly. The geographic location of the state and lack of connectivity has worked in our favour, the airport also hasn't been functioning for a while. The government of Sikkim also has taken proactive measures and the guidelines have been followed religiously by the people of the state. As a result, there are very few coronavirus cases. We were also lucky because the virus started spreading during the early part of the year when very few tourists are in the state. If the virus outbreak had happened in the summer months of May or June, then it would have been a catastrophic situation, about 10-15 lakh tourists come to Sikkim during that period.

<img alt="Exclusive: 'Hope people appreciate value of sport and fitness after crisis' - Bhaichung Bhutia" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f11e031d-9ca0-443f-aa5d-39958ca95a6e" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_Par2735967.jpg" />

DSD: The tourism economy in the state has also taken a big hit...

Bhaichung: Yes, one of the biggest sources of income for people in Sikkim is tourism. During the summer months is where most people in the industry make a large chunk of their money. But there isn't going to be any tourism this season. I feel the taxi drivers are going to be the worst hit since they don't have long term savings and have taken loans for their commercial vehicles. I hope the government comes up with a relief package for them. Even if the lockdown ends, I don't think people are going to travel to places for pleasure in the near future. In fact, I don't think we will see much tourism in the next year, till the time a vaccination is created for the virus. I think until that time people will be sceptical of travelling to other places.

DSD: But while staying at home is important equally important is the availability of food and essential supplies...and especially hilly areas could be difficult to get the information...

Bhaichung: Fortunately, people in rural areas in Sikkim do have access to essentials to sustain themselves. Most people in these areas depend on their own cultivation for food, so agricultural activities have been going on, but at a lesser scale. The government has also been proactive in providing ration to those in need. So overall, the way Sikkim has dealt with the crisis has been excellent.

DSD: There is also the tyranny of distance that the further away you are from Delhi the lesser the information...how has the northeast as a whole been through this last one month, I am told that in Assam there have been issues especially with the daily wage labourers...

Bhaichung: I think the various governments in the northeastern states have been very vigilant during these times. Since Assam is the biggest state in the region, there are many migrant workers who work in industrial areas there, so they are going through tough times, but there is some relief being provided to them by the state government. But the situation here is not as extreme as we see in other parts of the country. The government's measures have ensured that the virus does not spread rapidly. Some states like Manipur and Tripura have zero coronavirus cases as of now.

DSD: Bhaichung, you have been captain of India, Sunil is the captain of India now, Mary has been a tremendous icon for India yet there have been incidents of racially provoked attacks on people from North East...how disappointed are you each time you read or see such visuals?

Bhaichung: It is very upsetting when you see or read about acts of any sort of racial discrimination. I think we as a country must make people more aware and spread the message of unity in diversity because such incidents have been taking place for a long time. At the same time, stringent action must be taken against the culprits of these deplorable acts to set an example. If India wants to become a stronger nation, then we have to unite against any injustice that takes place. Such racist incidents are a black-mark on the diverse social fabric of the country and are an obstacle to our growth as a nation.

<img alt="Exclusive: 'Hope people appreciate value of sport and fitness after crisis' - Bhaichung Bhutia" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="964e3237-1b1a-4399-bdac-c5cf304ee85e" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_Del218381.jpg" />

DSD: The government also had to come up with strong deterrents to ensure doctors and nurses on duty are not attacked. What does it tells you about the mentality of people who are attacking the very people out there battling this crisis?

Bhaichung: It is extremely unfortunate that the healthcare workers, who are putting their lives at risk, are being attacked. Earlier, I appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take stringent action against the attackers. We must protect out healthcare workers, especially during the coronavirus crisis. Not only must they be protected from such incidents, but measures should also to ensure medical workers are themselves immune from the virus, we have observed in Italy, there was a such a major spike in cases because the medical workers themselves were falling prey to the disease. So in a country like India, we cannot afford to lose any medical staff in these times. I'm glad that a law has been passed and the government has taken a 'zero-tolerance' stand towards those who attack our front-line workers.

DSD: But this country owes a debt of gratitude to every person, doctors nurses, police, government officials, trash collectors, drivers, everyone who is out there trying to keep the country running, it isn’t an easy task...

Bhaichung: Absolutely, it is because of these people that we are safe and secure inside our respective houses. They have been risking our lives in order to save ours. All of us should ensure that their work is appreciated and they are looked after financially. The chief minister of Odisha, Mr Naveen Patnaik, announced a compensation package worth rupees 50 lakhs for any worker who loses his or her life while battling the coronavirus pandemic. I think this is a great initiative and more state governments should follow suit. It can also spur the people who are fighting on the front-lines.

DSD: There have been certain positive changes that have taken place during the lockdown as well, animals are roaming freely and the air quality has improved considerably... But let’s talk about sports now...unprecedented to see sports&nbsp;wiped off the map at the moment...

Bhaichung: Yes there have been a few pleasant changes that have taken place during the lockdown, the air quality has improved and the rivers are getting cleaner. But the challenge will be to sustain this. But these positive changes, of course, come while thousand of people are dying across the world. In terms of the sporting calendar, this is unprecedented. &nbsp;But I'm sure once the lockdown ends, all sports will return stronger with the right kind of measures taken by the federations. I hope people appreciate the value of sport and fitness after the crisis. Physical fitness can go a long way in maintaining the health and safety of the individual. So I hope this is one lesson we can take from this crisis. Even if people can take out a little bit of time daily from their busy schedules to work out, it will make their lives better.

DSD: There are a lot of anxious sportspersons out there, Bhaichung, who were preparing for their Olympic bow...what is your advice to them as they sit at home?

Bhaichung: The most important thing right now for any sportsperson would be to stay positive. It is especially challenging for senior athletes because one year can be a long time for them in their professional careers. But the postponement could also benefit certain athletes since they would have more time for preparation.

<img alt="Exclusive: 'Hope people appreciate value of sport and fitness after crisis' - Bhaichung Bhutia" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="6fe46ac9-7839-457e-a570-c4bcbede7fdf" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_Del133746.jpg" />

DSD: Indian badminton coach Pullela Gopichand suggested to me that perhaps the ministry should run quarantine camps to ensure our athletes continue to train...sounds feasible to you, even the Indian Olympic Association has now asked for the same...

Bhaichung: Yes I think it is a great suggestion from Pullela Gopichand, it can start with individual sports like badminton and tennis and then when the situation improves, camps can be set up for team sports like football. The top-level players who live close to big cities such as Bengaluru and Delhi can assemble in a sports authority of India complex or any facility approved by the sports ministry. &nbsp;When flights start functioning again, more athletes can join those quarantine camps from different parts of the country.

DSD: How difficult is it for a sportsperson to recover after losing touch with what they do best and how much time will it take for them to regain their peak?

Bhaichung: It does take time, there is no doubt about it. In any sport which requires endurance, athletes have to maintain their fitness levels when they are not competing. In a sport like badminton, if a player does not train for a week or ten days, there is a drastic drop in fitness levels. In other individual sports like tennis,&nbsp;wrestling and boxing as well, you need another player to compete against, but at the moment no one has that privilege. &nbsp;Not just physical fitness, but an athlete also needs to be in an environment where he or she is mentally prepared for competing at the top level. So it is important for athletes to maintain some level of fitness during the lockdown so that they find it easier to get into their regular training schedule once the lockdown ends.

DSD: In your sport football, how much of an impact is this shutdown having on professional football in the country? Do you think smaller clubs will be able to survive this financial crisis?

Bhaichung: If the virus continues to be a threat for the next few months, then the smaller clubs are definitely going to struggle financially. The good thing for Indian football is the outbreak happened when the season was about to finish, the ISL&nbsp;final took place behind closed doors while the i-league was on the verge of completion. So hopefully when the off-season gets over in 3-4 months, we will be able to hold matches while taking the necessary precautions.so if it is possible to begin matches by august or September, even if it is in empty stadiums, then I feel football action should resume. There is a huge market for football in India now, with a substantial television and digital audience which can generate a considerable income for the clubs and players. So, if the green light is given by the government to begin the Indian football season by September, then the All India Football Federation should definitely do all that they can to ensure that the campaign is held.

DSD: Globally, should football resume behind closed doors, there are some countries like Germany who are ready to restart their season...

Bhaichung:&nbsp;Yes, Germany is ready to resume season in may behind closed doors, and I feel if the necessary precautions are taken and if it is safe to do so, then it is the correct decision. The top five leagues in Europe have got a huge audience outside their own countries. It is unfortunate that games will have to take place behind closed doors, but since they have an opportunity to resume the season, football action should be held. Football is the most popular sport in the world and people are longing to watch some sort of sporting activities, so there is also huge revenue to be made.

DSD: How difficult will it be for clubs to get their players up to full fitness after what could end up as a two to three-month break?

Bhaichung: Since most teams in European clubs have been together for a few seasons, I don't think they will need much time to be on the same wavelength again as a team. The only challenge will be for them to regain their fitness levels, but that also should not take more than 10-15 days to achieve. I think if the green signal is given to the leagues, players and coaches will need two weeks to prepare for the resumption. There is a huge opportunity for leagues to begin in the next month and I wouldn't be surprised to see the action resume very soon.

DSD: Do you think that this period without sport anywhere will actually make everyone appreciate the value of a sportsperson, even more, we sort of take things for granted but not anymore...

Bhaichung: I certainly hope sport and sportspersons are appreciated more after the shutdown. Everyone is in the habit of watching sporting action on television during the weekend and I believe once the lockdown is over that all sports will be cherished more. But at the same time, I hope people in India start taking more care of their fitness, especially since we are not a sporting nation. So everyone is talking about investing in health and medical facilities, but apart from that if we can also invest in sports infrastructure, then it will go a long way in improving our collective health and fitness levels. So hopefully there will be more stadiums built, more spaces for children to play in in the future, which will lead to a healthier nation.

Former captain of the Indian football team and the recipient of Padma Shri, Bhaichung Bhutia, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, opened up on life in lockdown, racially provoked attacks on people from North East, struggles of a sportsperson after a prolonged break, football post-COVID-19, and much more… Digvijay Singh Deo: Bhaichung, good to be able to speak to you, I gather you too were stranded when the lockdown was imposed... Bhaichung: I have been in Siliguri because I got stuck here while going to Kolkata from Sikkim. My family are in Kolkata, so it is unfortunate that I cannot be with them. But let’s talk about sports now...unprecedented to see sports wiped off the map at the moment... But I'm sure once the lockdown ends, all sports will return stronger with the right kind of measures taken by the federations. When flights start functioning again, more athletes can join those quarantine camps from different parts of the country. In other individual sports like tennis, wrestling and boxing as well, you need another player to compete against, but at the moment no one has that privilege. Not just physical fitness, but an athlete also needs to be in an environment where he or she is mentally prepared for competing at the top level. The good thing for Indian football is the outbreak happened when the season was about to finish, the ISL final took place behind closed doors while the i-league was on the verge of completion. Bhaichung: Yes, Germany is ready to resume season in may behind closed doors, and I feel if the necessary precautions are taken and if it is safe to do so, then it is the correct decision.
