Watch: How Liverpool players celebrated Premier League title win

Real Mallorca's Luka Romero made history on Wednesday by becoming the youngest player ever to play in La Liga, aged 15 years and 219 days.

After training with Mallorca's senior team for the first time on June 1, Romero, who plays as an attacking midfielder, came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute of his team's 2-0 loss at Real Madrid.

"It was an unforgettable moment," Romero wrote on Twitter after the game.&nbsp;

"Thank you to everyone on the technical staff and at Real Mallorca for giving me this opportunity. I will never forget this day. It was a shame to lose but we keep believing."

Romero beat the record held for 81 years by Francisco Bao Rodriguez, known as 'Sanson', who played on December 31, 1939 aged 15 and 255 days for Celta Vigo against Sevilla.

Mallorca coach Vicente Moreno was seen talking to Romero before he brought the youngster on as a substitute.&nbsp;

"I tried to just keep him calm," Moreno said.&nbsp;

"I put my hand on his heart and I could tell it was beating very fast, which is normal for a kid of his age. He deserved to play and that's the reason he came on.

"We don't look at age. He has been training well and this seemed the best way to increase his motivation. His a great player and I think in the future he will give us a lot."

Romero was born in Mexico and could also play for Spain but his family is Argentinian and he has already represented Argentina at under-15 level.&nbsp;

"My whole family is Argentinian and my dream is to wear the national team's colours," Romero told the Argentinian Football Association in 2018.

Romero also had trials with Barcelona but joined Mallorca in 2011.

He is left-footed and has been likened to Spanish midfielder David Silva by Mallorca's assistant coach Dani Pendin.

After coming through the club's youth teams, he was an unused substitute against&nbsp;Villarreal&nbsp;and Leganes&nbsp;before finally being given his chance against Madrid.

"He is left-footed, fast, clever, mischievous, competitive ... the prototype of the Argentinian number 10," Pendin said in an interview with Spanish sports daily As last week.

"We have seen him develop since he was 12-years-old, but we did not want to build him up too fast because you have to take care of him.

"We saw him playing, he was doing incredible things in his age category, but physically he had not quite finished his growth and that could bring him problems if he came up against first division players too early.

"Today, when we see his feet, his body, we see that he is starting to form. And the fact that his father was a footballer also helps him a lot."

Mallorca are fighting relegation in La Liga. They sit 18th, three points away from safety with seven games left to play.

Luka Romero, 15, becomes youngest ever Liga player

When Liverpool were last crowned English champions, in April 1990, Margaret Thatcher was prime minister and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> was two years away from its glitzy launch.

Now Jurgen Klopp's runaway leaders are a Manchester City stumble away from once again ruling the roost after seeing off Crystal Palace 4-0 on Wednesday.

If City fail to beat Chelsea on Thursday, then it will all be over.

In 1990 it was business as usual for Kenny Dalglish's dominant Reds, who had finished in the top two every year since 1973, apart from one season.

Their triumph came a year after the trauma of the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans after a terrace crush.

Off the pitch, Britain was in the final months of Thatcher's long premiership.

Fierce opposition to the ruling Conservative Party's plans for a "poll tax", which included riots in London, contributed to her downfall in&nbsp;November 1990.

Britain still faced a threat from the Irish Republican Army and was heading for an economic recession.

<h2>- Liverpool change -</h2>

The city of Liverpool suffered high unemployment and rioting during the turbulent 1980s.

Joe Moran, professor of English and cultural history at Liverpool John Moores University, said northern cities suffered during Britain's accelerated economic transformation under Thatcher from a traditional manufacturing base towards a more service-based, consumer-oriented economy.&nbsp;

Liverpool's long-term decline as a port exacerbated the problems.

"The year 1990 wasn't the bleakest year in the city's history but it was just coming out of it," said Moran.

"Hillsborough happened a year before and it wasn't really until the mid-1990s that the city was being transformed, partly because it was coming out of recession, and through European funding.

"Winning the title, it was more important because the city was going through quite a hard time."

<h2>- TV riches -</h2>

The football landscape was also radically different three decades ago, with the English game yet to be flooded with the TV riches that came with the launch of the Premier League.&nbsp;

Bryan Robson remained the most expensive footballer traded between English clubs, nine years after his £1.5 million ($1.9 million) transfer from West Brom to Manchester United.

Moran said the 1990 World Cup in Italy was a catalyst for the "complete transformation" of football.

"I think the commercial changes to football since 1990 are in some ways a more extreme version of what happened in society," he said.&nbsp;

"They were a sort of turbo-capitalism, a hyper-mercenary trade" in which a small group of clubs powered away from the rest financially.

Manchester United, under Alex Ferguson, were in prime position to take advantage of the money flooding into the game, establishing a dominance to match Liverpool's in the previous two decades.

But they are just one of seven different clubs who have won the English top-flight since 1990 on a list that includes Blackburn and Leicester.

Joe Blott, chairman of the Spirit of Shankly supporters group, says Liverpool's last title is a fading memory.

"You have to be about 40 years of age to remember the last time Liverpool won it," he said. "There's almost a generation-and-a-half of fans who are waiting to see Liverpool win the league for the first time.

Blott, 59, said the game itself had changed from a national league to a "global commodity".

Chelsea, backed by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, and Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City have invested huge sums to win seven Premier League titles in the last 10 years.

Liverpool are also now American-owned, but Blott believes the Fenway Sports Group has invested wisely after the troubled days under previous American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Blott reserves special praise for Klopp, who he says has produced a side that mixes flair and steel to stand alongside the great teams of the past.

"At the moment we have got for the first time since the heady days of winning everything the Holy Trinity of manager, players and fans pulling in the same way," he said.

"He just gets us," he said, talking about Klopp. "He's immersed in the Scouse, Liverpool mentality. He understands what it's like to be a football fan.&nbsp;

"He ensures everyone is part of the victories, part of the losses. If ever there was a son of (former manager Bill) Shankly it's certainly Klopp."

Australia and New Zealand to host FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Helped by the withdrawal of rival candidates, a joint bid by Australia and New Zealand is expected to be awarded the hosting rights for the 2023 women's World Cup by FIFA on Thursday.

With Japan pulling out earlier this week to follow Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and a joint Korean bid in falling by the wayside, only Colombia stand in the way of the strong bid of Australia and New Zealand.

The 2023 tournament is set to be the first 32-team women's World Cup, up from the 24 nations who competed at last year's finals in France, won by the United States.

Thursday's decision at a video-conference meeting of the 37 members of the FIFA Council comes with football, and global sport in general, struggling to get back on its feet in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Australia and New Zealand bid was given the highest score, of 4.1 out of five, in an evaluation by world football's governing body published earlier this month.

It was followed by Japan, on 3.9, but the Japanese bid was withdrawn on Monday, with the head of the country's football association noting that key support was moving towards Australia and New Zealand. In addition, Kozo Tajima admitted that Japan's focus was on hosting next year's Olympics in Tokyo.

"I sensed resistance against hosting two top events in the same country in a short period of time, which was reinforced by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic," Tajima said in a statement.

FIFA's evaluation report gave Colombia a score of just 2.8 out of five as it raised doubts about the ability to provide investment required to carry out "necessary improvements".

In contrast, the Australia/New Zealand bid "provides a variety of very good options in terms of sporting and general infrastructure. It would also appear to present the most commercially favourable proposition".

The joint proposal would see games played in 13 venues across 12 cities, with the opening match at Eden Park in Auckland and the final in Sydney.&nbsp;Seven cities in Australia would host games, and five in New Zealand.

"When you look at our bid, we think it ticks a lot of the boxes," Football Federation Australia chairman Chris Nikou told AFP in an interview this week.&nbsp;

<h2>- Colombia doubts -</h2>

Colombia plans to use 10 venues with the opening match and final in Bogota. All are existing stadiums, but one -- in Cucuta in the north of the country by the Venezuelan border -- requires "significant renovation work".

The FIFA report also highlighted security worries.

"Although there has been a significant reduction in domestic terrorism, some concerns remain in terms of the potential impact of crime on tournament stakeholders," the FIFA report states.

Thursday's meeting will also raise the issue of the international calendar in the men's game, given the havoc caused by the global health crisis.

Among the issues is the future of the next Africa Cup of Nations, due to be played in Cameroon in early 2021.

After playing in the northern hemisphere summer at last year's tournament in Egypt, the Confederation of African Football plans to revert to the middle of the European season.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino also needs to find a way forward for the potentially lucrative, expanded Club World Cup, which he is having difficulty fitting into the calendar.

The event was due to be played in 2021 but has been postponed to avoid a clash with the rescheduled Euro 2020 and the Copa America.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The joint proposal would see games played in 13 venues across 12 cities, with the opening match at Eden Park in Auckland and the final in Sydney. Seven cities in Australia would host games, and five in New Zealand. "When you look at our bid, we think it ticks a lot of the boxes," Football Federation Australia chairman Chris Nikou told AFP in an interview this week. - Colombia doubts - Colombia plans to use 10 venues with the opening match and final in Bogota. The event was due to be played in 2021 but has been postponed to avoid a clash with the rescheduled Euro 2020 and the Copa America.

There was a massive uproar on social media when a cardboard cut of former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was spotted in the stands at Elland Road as the image went viral on Twitter. With matches being played behind closed doors as efforts continue to curb the spread of COVID-19, many clubs have used cardboard cuts of fans to fill out the empty seats.&nbsp;

Leeds United remove Osama bin Laden cut out from stands after howler

Harry Kane believes he is as fit as he has ever been after netting his first goal of 2020 as Tottenham kickstarted their challenge for a Champions League place next season with a 2-0 win over West Ham on Tuesday.

The England captain looked far more like his old self after a laboured performance in his first appearance for six months against Manchester United on Friday, and was rewarded with a goal eight minutes from time.

"I'm in good shape. I've been working very hard through my rehab, lockdown and training. I feel as fit as I probably ever have done before," Kane, who had surgery on a hamstring injury prior to the season's shutdown due to coronavirus, told Sky Sports.

"When you have been out for six months it is just getting that feeling back on the pitch. You can train as much as you want but being out here is totally different."

Tomas Soucek's own goal had opened the scoring as West Ham remain precariously poised outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

But Hammers boss David Moyes was furious the opener was not ruled out for a handball by Davinson Sanchez as he flicked a corner into Soucek's path.

"I can't believe they have ruled that as a goal," said Moyes. "Who is on VAR tonight? He needs subbed I know that. That's the rules."

Jose Mourinho's men were well worthy of a first win in eight games dating back to February.

Victory takes Spurs to within six points of the top four and within one of Manchester United in fifth.

Should Manchester City's appeal against a two-season ban from European competitions not prove successful, fifth would be good enough to qualify for the 2020/21 Champions League.

"I am happy with the result, the clean sheet, it means the team is more solid, the players have less doubts," said Mourinho.&nbsp;

In keeping with many of the 14 games since the Premier League's restart seven days ago, this was another slow burner as Spurs took time to start picking holes in West Ham's rearguard.

Son Heung-min thought he had broken the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a smart finish at Lukasz Fabianski's near post, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Mourinho launched an impassioned defence of his record of working with world-class strikers on the eve of the game after criticism that his playing style could see Kane look for pastures new.

And Kane had no shortage of opportunities after the break as his near post flick was turned behind by Fabianksi before he fired wide after sprinting the full length of the field as Spurs broke dangerously from a West Ham corner.

"He has been phenomenal in lockdown, he did amazing work at home and he is in the condition to help the team," added Mourinho.&nbsp;

In between times, Pablo Fornals dragged wide West Ham's big chance to go in front and aid their battle to beat the drop.

Moyes's men were undone by one of their own when Soucek unwittingly turned a corner into his own net 26 minutes from time.

Jarrod Bowen smashed a shot against the post as the visitors suddenly had to alter their gameplan of containing Tottenham to look for an equaliser.

But in doing so, they left themselves exposed at the back and Kane timed his run perfectly from a Son pass before coolly slotting past Fabianski and collapsing to the ground in a mixture of relief and exhaustion.

"I probably should have scored one other but it was nice to put that one away," added Kane.

"As a striker it's what you want to do. You want to score goals and want to help win the games."

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero underwent knee surgery under Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona on Wednesday as the Argentina international said that the operation went well. Aguero injured his knee during the match against Burnley and was substituted by teammate Gabriel Jesus.&nbsp;

Man City went on to defeat Burnley 5-0 in what was a thumping performance by the defending <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions.&nbsp;

While manager Pep Guardiola initially said that the injury doesn’t look good, Man City would be encouraged by the high probability of Aguero being available for knockout stages of UEFA Champions League given the Blues advance to the Final 8. Guardiola earlier feared the 32-year-old could miss the rest of the league season which ends in July.

Sergio Aguero's knee surgery goes well, expected to return in August

All 20 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> sides have now had at least one experience of their 'new normal', adapting to empty stands and strict hygiene protocols to try and complete the season despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

There are also changes to how the game operates on the field with more substitutions, water breaks and a packed schedule of games altering managers' plans.

Yet, for all the disruption, much remained the same as Manchester City kept Liverpool waiting to seal the title and those at the other end of the table struggled to pull themselves clear of the relegation zone.

AFP Sports looks at five things we learned.

<h2>- Slow starts -</h2>

Of the 28 goals scored in the first 12 games, a mere eight have come in the first half as teams slowly get used to their new surroundings.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin reflected the feeling of many when he said playing a Merseyside derby against Liverpool with no atmosphere was "a little bit bizarre".

Players and managers are also wary of spending their energies too early after a three-month layoff and very little time training together to get up to speed.

<h2>- Five substitutions -</h2>

Another reason for a glut of late goals could be the impact made off the bench with coaches enjoying more choice than ever before.

Each team can make five substitutions with nine reserves on the bench to call on.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho bemoaned the temporary change will only serve to help "the powerful clubs" and broaden the gap between rich and poor.

Mourinho made just two changes as Spurs wilted in the final stages against Manchester United, who netted a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw on Friday.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acknowledged he had "quality players to come on and make a difference" after Paul Pogba's introduction made a big impact, winning the penalty from which Bruno Fernandes levelled.

Frank Lampard's substitutions also proved pivotal as Chelsea came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1, with Christian Pulisic coming off the bench to equalise.

<h2>- Unnecessary water breaks -</h2>

Despite having an extra two substitutions, each side can still only stop the game three times to make changes.

That tinkering of the laws is designed to protect player welfare without continuously halting the flow of the game, but another new feature is doing just that.

A water break at the halfway point of each half has been implemented, no matter what temperature the game takes place in.

In practice, this has allowed managers an extra time out to get instructions across and often switch the momentum of the game.

<h2>- More of the same -</h2>

Silky football from City, a Merseyside derby stalemate, an Arsenal collapse and defensive calamities for Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa: the more things change, the more they stay the same.

City's title challenge to Liverpool was partly derailed by key injuries to Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte early in the campaign.

With a full compliment to now choose from, Pep Guardiola is spoiled for choice&nbsp;as he showed in making eight changes for Monday's 5-0 thrashing of Burnley.

Liverpool have still not lost a derby in 10 years, but a goalless draw at Goodison was also not so out of the ordinary. The last three Premier League meetings between the sides at Everton's home have now failed to produce a goal.

Aston Villa's 0-0 draw against Sheffield United is the only point any of the bottom four have picked up since the restart as all four fell to damaging home defeats this weekend.

<h2>- Take a knee takes hold -</h2>

After a 100-day wait for the Premier League to restart, it did so on one knee as all players, staff and referees took a knee before kick-off between Villa and Sheffield United.

Every game so far has followed in the same fashion as the Premier League has sent a strong message around the world in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign, although the start ot City's win over Burnley was marred by an aircraft circling the Etihad Stadium with a banner reading 'White lives matter Burnley'.

"It's powerful, it's given the movement global momentum to keep the conversation going," former Arsenal striker Ian Wright said of the Black Live Matters campaign.

However, pressure is now on the league to take action rather than make gestures.

The Premier League has so far resisted calls to introduce a NFL style "Rooney rule" that requires teams to interview ethnic minority candidates for senior coaching roles.

All 20 Premier League sides have now had at least one experience of their 'new normal', adapting to empty stands and strict hygiene protocols to try and complete the season despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Yet, for all the disruption, much remained the same as Manchester City kept Liverpool waiting to seal the title and those at the other end of the table struggled to pull themselves clear of the relegation zone. AFP Sports looks at five things we learned. - Slow starts - Of the 28 goals scored in the first 12 games, a mere eight have come in the first half as teams slowly get used to their new surroundings. - Five substitutions - Another reason for a glut of late goals could be the impact made off the bench with coaches enjoying more choice than ever before. - Unnecessary water breaks - Despite having an extra two substitutions, each side can still only stop the game three times to make changes. - More of the same - Silky football from City, a Merseyside derby stalemate, an Arsenal collapse and defensive calamities for Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa: the more things change, the more they stay the same. City's title challenge to Liverpool was partly derailed by key injuries to Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte early in the campaign. With a full compliment to now choose from, Pep Guardiola is spoiled for choice as he showed in making eight changes for Monday's 5-0 thrashing of Burnley. - Take a knee takes hold - After a 100-day wait for the Premier League to restart, it did so on one knee as all players, staff and referees took a knee before kick-off between Villa and Sheffield United.

Five takeaways from the Premier League weekend

Jose Mourinho strongly defended his record of getting the best from top strikers on Monday after criticism the Portuguese manager's style could see Harry Kane look for pastures new.

Kane played his first game for six months in Tottenham's 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Friday, but failed to get a single touch in the opposition box.

Mourinho's tactics were again in the spotlight as Spurs tried to hold onto a 1-0 lead for most of the second half before Bruno Fernandes's penalty secured a point for United.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson said he "worried" for Kane under Mourinho and a lack of trophies could also force the England captain to move on.

Mourinho addressed Merson personally during a videoconference ahead of Tuesday's clash with West Ham and reeled off a list of statistics detailing the scoring rates of Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Diego Milito and Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his time in charge of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Kane scored seven goals in 10 games following Mourinho's appointment before tearing his hamstring on New Year's Day.

"Harry Kane has no problems at all to score goals in my team," said Mourinho.&nbsp;

"Especially when he is fit, when is fresh, when he has routines of playing that's my message to somebody."

Mourinho was also criticised for leaving a visibly tiring Kane on the field for the full 90 minutes last week.

Spurs wilted in the final quarter as Mourinho made just two of five allotted substitution compared with United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who used his full complement.

Mourinho bemoaned his lack of options from the bench, with Dele Alli suspended and Lucas Moura injured.

Alli and Lucas will be available for selection against West Ham and Mourinho is looking forward to having six attacking players to choose from for the first time as Tottenham boss.

"(Steven) Bergwijn and (Erik) Lamela, Lucas and Son (Heung-min), Dele and Harry, six attacking players, all different, all very good and it is the first time I have all of them available, which is the kind of problem which we coaches love."

Mourinho insists Kane will thrive on his watch

Juventus's Serie A supremacy faces a stiff test with the champions just one point ahead of Lazio as the Italian league kicks off again this weekend following a three-month shutdown.

A return had looked unthinkable back in April as Italy counted their daily coronavirus deaths in the hundreds for nearly 35,000 victims in the country.

But the situation has improved with strict health protocols in place and all matches being played behind closed doors.

Four postponed games will take place first this weekend involving teams at the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Atalanta host Sassuolo in Bergamo on Sunday, and Inter Milan are at home against Sampdoria.

On Saturday, Torino host Parma and Cagliari travel to Hellas Verona.

Next week all teams will have 12 games left to play with Juventus at Bologna on Monday, and Lazio travelling to Atalanta on Wednesday.

Maurizio Sarri's Juventus fell in the Italian Cup final to Napoli on penalties midweek, having also lost the Italian SuperCup to Lazio in December.

"Ronaldo, (Paulo) Dybala and our great soloists lack that little bit of brilliance, but I consider it quite normal in this period," said Sarri.&nbsp;

"I didn't say anything to the players, we were all very angry and disappointed and I think it's better to be silent right now."

Sarri's woes have been compounded with Brazilian defender Alex Sandro tearing a knee ligament against Napoli and Sami Khedira picking up a potentially serious tendon problem.

Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain and captain Giorgio Chiellini are also not yet at full fitness.

<h2>- Ronaldo effect -</h2>

Juventus will be counting on their top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo to react after suffering two defeats in a final for the first time in his career, and missing a penalty in the Italian Cup semi-final.

Lazio's Ciro Immobile has scored 27 goals this season, six more than Ronaldo, as the in-form Romans target their third Scudetto and first in two decades.

Simone Inzaghi's side have already beaten Juventus twice this season, in the Italian SuperCup final and 3-1 in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The top two teams will meet in Turin on July 20.

Inter Milan are third, nine points behind Juventus. Inter lost to Lazio (2-1) and Juventus (2-0) just before the suspension.

"If I have to find a positive part of this crisis, it's that I've had time to focus and try to find different areas in which the team can improve," said coach Antonio Conte.

Atalanta occupy the final Champions League berth, three points ahead of Roma, with Napoli sixth a further six points back.

<h2>- Maths madness -</h2>

While the championship resumes the question remains of what happens in the case of another suspension.

Plan B provides for play-offs, the format of which remains to be defined.

A final decision could open the way to use a complicated algorithm devised by the federation to establish the final ranking.&nbsp;

Who would qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League? Who would go to Serie B?&nbsp;

Very simple: PF = PT + (MPc x NPc) + (MPt x NPt)!&nbsp;

This formula means that the total points will be calculated taking into account those obtained at the time of the interruption, plus a simulation based on the average points taken at home and away multiplied by the number of matches still to play.

Got it?

It was even considered at one point to take into account the number of goals scored home and away, for an even more intimidating formula: PF = PT + 0,90 x [(MPc x NPc ) + (MPt x NPt)] + 0,10 x (iag x Δr).

"This is madness. We are at the 'Normale' of Pisa," said FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, referring to the prestigious Tuscan university, which has given Italy three Nobel Prize winners and two Presidents.&nbsp;

But one sticking point was cleared up Thursday with the Italian government agreeing to ease quarantine restrictions in the case of a positive test with only the infected person isolated.

The squad and staff will be closely monitored and a quick test performed on the whole team on match day, boosting hopes that the championship will be concluded.

Juventus supremacy under threat as Serie A returns

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to exact revenge on former employers Manchester United, while Liverpool aim to move within one win of the title as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>'s return kicks up a gear across a four-day weekend of action.

The English top flight got its first taste of empty stands and strict hygiene protocols on Wednesday as Aston Villa's goalless draw with Sheffield United and Manchester City's 3-0 victory over Arsenal restarted the campaign.

Despite the muted atmosphere, there remains plenty to play for at both ends of the table with the clash between Tottenham and United pivotal in the battle for Champions League qualification.

Both sit outside the top four with nine games remaining. However, United's position in fifth could be good enough to secure a return to the Champions League if Manchester City's appeal against a two-season ban from European competition is unsuccessful.

Spurs could prove to be the biggest winners of the three-month lockdown.

Before the break, Mourinho claimed he could not wait for the season to finish as injuries to Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Moussa Sissoko and Steven Bergwijn appeared to have ended their campaigns.

All four are now fit again and victory would lift Tottenham to within one point of the club that sacked Mourinho in December 2018.

"The reality is we are now in a better position to where we were before," said Mourinho.

"We got Harry and Sonny back, the players with the best stats in terms of scoring and assists. They give us this kind of attacking power."

United were the form side in the league prior to the lockdown.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men are unbeaten in 11 games but also benefited from the break as Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba return from long-term injuries.

Rashford has made waves for his power off the field with a campaign to provide vulnerable children with food vouchers forcing a British government U-turn.

But the England international is desperate to get back on more familiar ground after being sidelined by a back injury since January.

"It's been a long time, but I think I needed it," Rashford told Sky Sports.

"Within my body I definitely feel confident again and ready to play games. The timing has worked out well for me."

Solskjaer said Pogba is "raring to go" after an injury-ravaged season and could be paired with January signing Bruno Fernandes in the United midfield for the first time.

<h2>- Liverpool excitement building -</h2>

City's victory over Arsenal means Liverpool cannot seal a first league title in 30 years against Everton on Sunday, much to the blue side of Merseyside's relief.

Jurgen Klopp's men are just two wins away from the historic feat and victory at Goodison Park will allow them the chance to win the league on home soil when Crystal Palace visit Anfield on Wednesday.

"You can feel it," said Klopp of the excitement building around his side's return. "I feel the intensity everywhere."

The match will take place in Liverpool despite fears over fans congregating outside both stadiums in the city. Goodison and Anfield are separated by less than a mile.

Klopp has urged his supporters to be "the best stay at home fans in the world".

The earliest Liverpool could now be crowned champions is on Monday should the Reds win and City lose at home to Burnley.

At the other end of the table, Norwich, Villa and Bournemouth sit in the relegation zone, but just three points separate second-bottom Villa from Brighton in 15th.

Rock-bottom Norwich can ramp up the pressure on those above them even more should they close to within three points of safety in the first match of the weekend against Southampton.

Mourinho meets familiar foes Man Utd as Liverpool resume title hunt

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is delighted his side have the chance to win a first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title in 30 years on the field after the uncertainty of a three-month halt to the season due to coronavirus.

The Reds hold a commanding 22-point lead at the top of the table and will seal the much-awaited title with victories over Everton on Sunday and when Crystal Palace visit Anfield on Wednesday.

Had the Premier League not been able to resume with the UK the worst-hit country in Europe from COVID-19, various proposals were discussed as to how the campaign would be decided.

The idea of declaring the season null and void gained little support and Klopp was relieved when that was taken off the table with Liverpool on course to smash a series of records after 29 games.

"I became worried in the moment when people started talking about null and void the season because I was like 'wow', I felt it physically because that would have been really, really, really hard," Klopp said in a pre-match videoconference ahead of Liverpool's return to action.

Had the Premier League followed the example of some other leagues around Europe by ending the season on a points-per-game basis, Liverpool would already be champions.

But Klopp is glad to have the opportunity to win it on the pitch, even if no fans will be in the stadium to witness the historic moment.

"We don't expect to get it as a present so we did not want it to happen on points-per-game (PPG). We were really happy when it was decided we could play again," he added.

"There were moments, you know how long the discussions were, people brought it up (null and void) from time to time for different reasons. When that was off the table I felt quite relieved.

"Now we are here. If they had done PPG and we could not have played we would probably be champions. Now we aren't, we have to play for it.

"That is great, that is how it should be in sports. Now we go for it. We do not think in our mind we are already there."

Liverpool will join the Premier League wide movement to support the Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign with BLM replacing players' names on the back of shirts this weekend.

Klopp's squad took a knee on their return to group training earlier this month in solidarity with the fight against racial injustice.

The first two Premier League games of the restart on Wednesday were also preceded by all players and officials taking a knee.

Klopp has been outspoken on political and societal issues in the past and labelled the need to still be fighting racism in 2020 as "unbelievably dumb".&nbsp;

"If football is a role model for anything in life it is for that, that everybody is the exactly same, wherever you come from, it is all about who you are, not which colour you are," he added.

"It's so unbelievably dumb not to do it like this, it is really hard for me to even understand it.

"But it is like this so we have to stand up or we have to kneel down, whatever we have to do we will do just to solve this situation for now and for the future because the past we cannot change, but the future we can change."

Klopp relieved to escape 'null and void' outcome in Premier League

Brazilian forward Neymar must pay 6.7 million euros to Barcelona, a court-ordered on Friday after the Paris Saint-Germain winger’s case against his former employer was dismissed. Neymar had sued Barcelona for 43.6 million euros that he claimed was due for various bonuses after sealing a world-record deal with PSG.

However, the judge dismissed Neymar’s case and favoured Barca, who also had sued their former player for breach of contract. Neymar has five days to appeal the verdict.

Neymar joined Barcelona in 2013 before signing a five-year extension in 2016 which included renewal bonus worth 43.6 million euros with 14 million paid up front. The remaining 29 million euros were due to be paid on August 1, 2017, but the Brazilian forward left Barcelona on August 3 after PSG activated striker’s 222 million euro release clause. Barca, at that time, refused to pay Neymar the remaining bonus as the Blaugrana insisted that terms of the contract were broken.

"We express our satisfaction with the verdict announced today," Barcelona said in a statement.

"The ruling has fully dismissed the player's claim for payment of €43.6m, and has accepted a large part of the defence presented by FC Barcelona, as a result of which the player must return €6.7m to the club.

Brazilian forward Neymar must pay 6.7 million euros to Barcelona, a court-ordered on Friday after the Paris Saint-Germain winger’s case against his former employer was dismissed.

Brazilian forward Neymar must pay 6.7 million euros to Barcelona, a court-ordered on Friday after the Paris Saint-Germain winger’s case against his former employer was dismissed. Neymar had sued Barcelona for 43.6 million euros that he claimed was due for various bonuses after sealing a world-record deal with PSG. However, the judge dismissed Neymar’s case and favoured Barca, who also had sued their former player for breach of contract. Neymar has five days to appeal the verdict. Neymar joined Barcelona in 2013 before signing a five-year extension in 2016 which included renewal bonus worth 43.6 million euros with 14 million paid up front. The remaining 29 million euros were due to be paid on August 1, 2017, but the Brazilian forward left Barcelona on August 3 after PSG activated striker’s 222 million euro release clause. Barca, at that time, refused to pay Neymar the remaining bonus as the Blaugrana insisted that terms of the contract were broken. The future of Chennai Super League (CSL) has gone for a toss after the recent outbreak of coronavirus in Beijing, that has “complicated” the plans to start the postponed league of China. A medical expert advising the Chinese soccer association has said that with more than 180 infections recorded in just over a week, the future of CSL is under discussion.&nbsp;

The CSL was scheduled to start in February but has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19. The recent outbreak could cause further delays. Zhang Wenhong, an infectious disease specialist told state television that a postponement of CSL could happen.

“The schedule is still under discussion because the pandemic just re-surged in Beijing,” Zhang said.

“The potential coronavirus transmissions from Beijing make it more complicated. I think CSL leaders are concerned about that and will keep changing the timetable.”

Zhang further said that China unlike European countries where football leagues have restarted is keeping a cautious approach and want to keep cases at near zero.

“European countries have made the decision to restart, because they believe ... if they can keep coronavirus cases under control and the medical system is working well, it will be okay to restart the games,” he said.

“In China, however, our target is to keep the cases at near zero, so we are much more prudent and we still need more time.”

However, the director of the Shanghai Administration of Sports recently said that CSL could resume in July given “everything goes well”. The COVID-19 shutdown has had a massive impact on Chinese football, financially, with many clubs folding under pressure, including CSL club Tianjin Tianhai.

UEFA has opted to temporarily soften its financial fair play (FFP) rules to help clubs impacted by the economic fall-out of the coronavirus crisis, European football's governing body&nbsp;announced on Thursday.

FFP rules mean that, over a three-year period, clubs competing in European competition are not permitted to lose more than 30 million euros ($33.7m).

However, given the damage done to the footballing economy by the interruption to the sport caused by the pandemic, UEFA has agreed to a loosening of the rules which, it says, "aim at addressing the actual problem which is revenue shortfall due to COVID-19 and not financial mismanagement".

It means that clubs will be given longer than usual to show they have met payments owed on transfers and salaries, while "the assessment of financial year 2020 is postponed for one season, and will be assessed together with the financial year 2021".

These measures do not impact on decisions already taken before the crisis, so for example French club Marseille are still set to be punished after they were referred in March to the adjudicatory chamber of UEFA's&nbsp;Club Financial Control Body for not complying with an agreement to balance their books.

Manchester City have been banned from Europe for two years and handed a 30 million-euro fine for serious breaches of FFP regulations between 2012 and 2016.

The English club have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, which will announce its judgement on the case in July.

The FFP rules were brought in to combat growing debt in European football.

Assessments began in 2011 when European clubs reported overall losses of 1.7 billion euros. In contrast, according to UEFA's most recent annual "benchmarking" report, the 700 top-tier clubs across the continent made a combined profit of 140 million euros in 2018.

<h2>- 'Harmonised' transfer window -</h2>

Meanwhile, UEFA has said it wants a harmonised European transfer window this summer closing on October 5, ahead of next season's Champions League and Europa League group stages.

Following its latest executive committee meeting held via videoconference, UEFA said clubs would have until October 6 to register players for the group stage of next season's European club competitions.

On Wednesday it was announced that the 2020-21 Champions League would start on October 20, with the Europa League group stage starting two days later.

The summer transfer window in Europe usually closes at the start of September, although individual countries do not all follow the same dates.

Football is still adapting after the current season was interrupted in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

FIFA has already permitted countries to open their transfer windows up to four weeks before the delayed season has been completed, although any new signings would not be eligible until next season.

Several countries are only just resuming competitions, with the seasons in the English Premier League and Spain's La Liga not set to finish until late July. Italy's Serie A will not now finish until early August.

On Wednesday UEFA announced that this season's Champions League would be completed with a "final eight" straight knock-out format in Lisbon from August 12 to 23.

Similar formats have been adopted for the latter stages of the Europa League, in Germany, and the women's Champions League, in Spain.

Werner will join the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> club in July, subject to passing a medical test after the Blues agreed a reported £47.5 million fee for the German forward on £200,000-per-week in wages.

Werner’s inclusion further strengthens the Chelsea squad especially with the Blues signing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax earlier. The German along with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, could turn into a potent attacking line. Renowned for his pace, movement, link-up and deadly finishing, Werner has been enjoying a phenomenal season having scored 32 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances in all competition.&nbsp;

Werner, who turned 24 in March, has been one of the highly-rated young but experienced forwards in Europe. Twitterati mercilessly trolls Cristiano Ronaldo after Napoli defeat; fans expect comeback

Napoli stunned Juventus 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw to claim the Coppa Italia on Wednesday and bring their fiery coach Gennaro Gattuso the first major trophy of his managerial career.

Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed Juve’s first two efforts in the shootout while Napoli converted all their attempts to win the trophy for the sixth time and end Juve’s hopes of securing the treble this season.

It was the first title to be settled in the Italian season which has just restarted after a three-month hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although it had been planned for the players to collect their own medals in a “self-service” ceremony, the Napoli players received theirs from the respective club presidents Aurelio De Laurentiis and Andrea Agnelli.

It was a remarkable achievement for 42-year-old Gattuso, who took over Napoli in December with the team in disarray after the players had rebelled against a week-long training camp imposed on them by De Laurentiis.

“Football has given me so much and that is why I have so much passion for it,” Gattuso said. “It’s something I can’t let go of, not even for a second.”

“Those of who have this job must have respect for it because we’re lucky. I want to see people who put passion into it, I want a sense of belonging and respect.”

Napoli could have won without penalties but were defied by an outstanding double save from Gianluigi Buffon in stoppage time.

The 42-year-old Juventus goalkeeper blocked Nikola Maksimovic’s powerful header and turned Eljif Elmas’ effort from the rebound onto the post from point-blank range.

Napoli had the best chances throughout the game while Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo saw little of the ball and had a frustrating evening.

Lorenzo Insigne hit the post with a 30-metre free kick in the first half and saw another effort stopped by Buffon, while Arkadiusz Milik could also have won it for Napoli but sent a shot over the bar.

Juventus, who have drawn both their games 0-0 since the restart, lead Serie A, in which they are chasing a ninth successive title. Both teams are still in the Champions League.

Coppa Italia: Napoli upset Juve to give Gattuso first trophy as coach

Robert Lewandowski said he hopes Bayern Munich will be able to play in front of their own fans again soon after winning an eighth straight Bundesliga title on Tuesday behind closed doors.

Lewandowski's first-half goal sealed a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen which saw Bayern become the first team to secure a top league title on the pitch since the coronavirus lockdown.

"It was tough without our fans, without the energy they give us, but we are happy that we are German champions again," said Lewandowski after Bayern won their eighth straight match following the resumption of German football last month.

"It wasn't easy, but we showed our quality.

"I hope we can play in front of our fans in our stadium soon."

Club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted it was a "curious, strange" feeling to see only a handful of Bayern officials and backroom staff in the Weserstadion to cheer the players.

Lewandowski admitted Bayern endured a nervous last few minutes as only a finger-tip save from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer protected the lead.

"When you are 1-0 up, you know you need to score again to be sure. Werder Bremen played well, but luckily for us, we managed to hold them out," said Lewandowski.

"The most important thing is that we can celebrate as German champions.

"That was typical of 'Manu' (Neuer), he loves saves like that and he did really well and we had to be really careful with their long balls."

Bayern face Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup final on July 4 and are among the favourites to win the Champions League.

"We have our next game in three days, that is the priority, but after that, we will have enough time to prepare for the Champions League," said Lewandowski.

Juventus vs Napoli, Coppa Italia Final, Preview: A feisty face-off expected in Rome

The much-awaited <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>&nbsp;restart will witness Manchester City face Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. The blockbuster clash will be played behind closed doors but it won’t matter to the football fanatics much as they will be seeing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> coming back on track following a prolonged break due to COVID-19.

Both the managers - Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta (who himself has been a COVID-19 survivor) -&nbsp;thanked the NHS and frontline workers during the pre-match press conference. Both Man City and Arsenal, like other <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> teams, have been working rigorously to get back to match fitness but are expected to be a bit rusty.&nbsp;

“You can play a game after three weeks on holiday but we spent two weeks on the sofa doing nothing much. That is why the players are not fully fit.&nbsp;

ALSO READ:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pep-guardiola-man-city-players-not-ready-for-hectic-premier-league-schedule-306320" hreflang="en">Pep Guardiola: Man City players not ready for hectic Premier League schedule</a>

“But that is why we have to finish the season. We have to limit the economic damage to the clubs. The way we are right now, I think other clubs and teams [as well], we don't know. If you ask me how the team is, I don't know,” Guardiola said in the press conference.

<h2>Advantage, Man City?</h2>

Talking about the fixture, Man City have won six straight competitive matches against the Gunners while scoring three goals in five of those six games. Before the league was put on a hold, Man City had won four of their five Premier League home games including a draw.

Whereas Arsenal trail the Champions League spot by eight points but an unbeaten run in the last eight Premier League games will give them an upbeat chance to upset the rusty Blues. With a lot to play for in the season, both the teams would be wanting to get back to full fitness as soon as possible and could treat the match as a stepping stone for the rest of the season. Win, is an absolute necessity for both which makes the contest a promising affair.&nbsp;

The blockbuster clash will be played behind closed doors but it won’t matter to the football fanatics much as they will be seeing Premier League coming back on track following a prolonged break due to COVID-19. Both the managers - Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta (who himself has been a COVID-19 survivor) - thanked the NHS and frontline workers during the pre-match press conference. Both Man City and Arsenal, like other Premier League teams, have been working rigorously to get back to match fitness but are expected to be a bit rusty. “You can play a game after three weeks on holiday but we spent two weeks on the sofa doing nothing much. That is why the players are not fully fit. ALSO READ: Pep Guardiola: Man City players not ready for hectic Premier League schedule “But that is why we have to finish the season. Man City vs Arsenal Preview: A battle between the master and apprentice

Bayern Munich can be crowned German champions on Tuesday with victory at Werder Bremen, but any festivities will be reduced to a minimum to respect the safety measures in place to combat the coronavirus.

<h2>When will Bayern be declared champions?</h2>

The German league (DFL) said, in its rules governing the restart, that the champion and relegated sides will not officially be declared until the last round of matches. In theory, if the league was interrupted again by the pandemic, the final standings could be reviewed.&nbsp;

As a result, the "Schale", or winners' trophy, will not be awarded until the end of the season, on June 27 when Bayern play Wolfsburg.

<h2>What kind of ceremony awaits the champions?</h2>

The DFL will not reveal its plans until the champions are known, but any celebrations will be subdued given the hygiene measures in place.&nbsp;

These rules place a limit of 100 people allowed in the "interior zone", the pitch and substitutes' bench. That means Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and other club officials, who have clearance to be in the stands, will not be able to get down on the pitch.

In keeping with rules since the restart, there will be no supporters or family members present either.

<h2>What happens to the traditional beer shower?</h2>

The traditional beer shower, to which Bayern have grown accustomed, is also banned under current league regulations.

"I would be happy if it didn't take place this year," said a smiling Hansi Flick, the Bayern coach whose first wheat beer drenching will have to wait.

<h2>What about the town hall parade?</h2>

The customary trophy presentation in front of supporters at the city's town hall has been cancelled in advance.

"Respecting this tradition is unfortunately unthinkable" this year, said Munich mayor Dieter Reiter.&nbsp;

"But I am sure an appropriate honour will be found if Bayern should win the title," he added, without giving further details.

<h2>Can Bayern celebrate as a group?</h2>

The team and staff members will be able to celebrate together, having been regularly tested for the virus and working in contact with each other for weeks.

If club directors, such as Rummenigge or former president Uli Hoeness wish to be involved, they must return two negative test results beforehand. Families and friends are not expected to be invited, however.

With the German Cup final to come on July 4, Bayern must continue to follow the league's strict health protocol until they meet Bayer Leverkusen in Berlin.

How to celebrate a title in times of coronavirus?

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits players will have to find motivation without the urgency provided by fans when the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> restarts on Wednesday.

Arteta's side will feature in the second game of the Premier League relaunch when they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, just hours after the opener between Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The remaining 92 top-flight matches will all be played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus.

Having watched Germany's Bundesliga return without fans on television before experiencing the situation himself last week during friendlies, Arteta is aware of the challenges.

He believes it will be hard for some players to display their usual intensity because they will not have the energy of a full stadium to feed off.

"When I was at the Emirates and there was no crowd, you cannot feel that energy, push or drive," Arteta told reporters in a video press conference on Monday.

"The game is different. The intensity drops a little bit. That urgency from the crowd doesn't exist anymore, how passionate the crowds are in England. We have to adapt.

"We have to experience it. We have to find ways to motivate our players as well in moments."

Like most managers, Arteta has concerns about the fitness of his players after they were forced to work out on their own before the gradual return to organised training.

<h2>- 'Ready to compete' -</h2>

With the rest of this season being crammed into just six weeks, Arteta has told his players to forget the unusual circumstances and embrace their return to action.

"We try to make the best of it. Don't try to make any excuses, go for it and enjoy because I think we are all missing football so much," he said.

"I think we have found the right balance, and the most important thing was to provide the players with a safe environment to work where they could feel there was no risk, or a very limited risk, to develop their profession.

"I think we have managed to do that and from now on, the physical part is really good and the mental side as well has been a challenge over those three months. Now let's see how ready we are to compete."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder and Aston Villa boss Dean Smith said they were aware the eyes of the world would be on their match at Villa Park.

"First game back is going to be a little bit different, what we understand is the magnitude of the game, the coverage of the game," Wilder said at his pre-match video press conference on Monday.

"From our point of view we want to put on a good show and make sure we play well."

Sheffield United, who have 10 games to play, are seventh in the table, chasing Champions League football.

Villa are in the relegation places, but Smith said it was an honour to be playing the first game in the English top flight since March.

Victory over the Blades, their game in hand over their relegation rivals, would take them out of the drop zone with nine matches remaining.

"The eyes of the world will be on us and we are looking forward to it," Smith said.

Arteta ready for challenge of Premier League relaunch

No spitting and no handshakes -- the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season resumes on Wednesday looking very different from three months ago.

Amid the coronavirus crisis, the Premier League have issued detailed guidance before the big kick-off, stating: "Strict protocols have been put in place to ensure that stadiums are as safe as possible for everybody present."

AFP Sport takes a look at the new rules in place:

<h2>Stadium safety</h2>

About 300 people will be allowed into stadiums for each of the remaining 92 matches of the season.&nbsp;

Grounds will be divided into three zones: red, amber and green.&nbsp;Each zone has unique protocols and procedures.&nbsp;

Only those who have undergone tests in the five days before a match can enter the red zone in any stadium, which includes the pitch, technical area, tunnel and dressing rooms.&nbsp;

Those individuals must have a "clinical passport" -- a bar code that shows their most recent test result is negative -– before being granted access.&nbsp;

<h2>Pre-match</h2>

Players and staff are required to undergo daily screening for the virus. Before leaving for a match, they must complete relevant checks for COVID-19 and report any symptoms.&nbsp;

Teams can travel to the stadium via car, coach, plane or train, but must do so in sterile environments and must observe social distancing.&nbsp;

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, whose team visit Aston Villa in the opening game of the relaunch on Wednesday, said: "We are going on three buses. The main guys are on the first one, so you will see the team from who gets off first."

Players and staff will be given a sterile route from their vehicles to the dressing rooms, which must have enough space to allow for suitable social distancing. &nbsp;

Teams will be encouraged to stagger their use of changing rooms. Showers can be used, as long as individuals remain socially distanced.

Sheffield United will not use the away dressing room at Villa Park and have instead been allocated a press room and players' lounge to change in.

"We are changing in a big media room at Villa Park, not in the changing rooms and our players have to stay two metres apart when there is a break in play," Wilder said.

At some stadiums, teams will use different tunnels. Where there is one tunnel, players and match officials will stagger their journeys to and from the pitch.

<h2>Hygiene</h2>

Widespread disinfection will take place including of changing facilities, dugouts, matchballs, goalposts, corner flags and substitution boards.&nbsp;

People other than players and coaching staff on team benches must wear face coverings.

<h2>No handshakes</h2>

When teams line up for the Premier League anthem, players will now stand in a staggered formation.

The traditional handshakes between the two teams will no longer happen and there will also be no handshakes at the coin toss.&nbsp;

Trainers' benches will be expanded to enable social distancing during matches.

<h2>Spitting ban</h2>

Players have been told to maintain distancing during goal celebrations. No spitting or nose-clearing is allowed and players will use their own water bottles.

In the Bundesliga, Hertha Berlin defender Dedryck Boyata found himself in hot water last month after grabbing the face of team-mate Marko Grujic.

Boyata apologised, saying players had to "adapt" to the new rules.

Premier League players have also been told to avoid mass confrontations with opponents or match officials and to try to restrict interaction with opponents after the match.

Premier League return: the rules

UEFA are set to complete the&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;with a 'Final Eight' tournament held over 11 days in Lisbon, according to a plan which will be presented to their executive committee for ratification on Wednesday.

A source with knowledge of discussions between clubs and European soccer's governing body told Reuters that the proposal is expected to be agreed upon after a consensus was reached on Monday.

UEFA did not respond to a request for comment.

Under the plan the competition, which was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, will resume with the second-leg of remaining last 16 games played at the scheduled venues.

The single leg quarter-final games will be played in Lisbon on four straight days from Aug. 12-15.

The semi-finals will take place on Aug. 18 and 19 and the final on Aug. 23 in the Portuguese capital.

The plan allows for a quicker completion of the season than the traditional two-legged home and away format but does mean the competition will have six fewer games which will cost UEFA broadcast revenue.

The games are likely to be shared between Lisbon's two major stadiums - Benfica's Estadio da Luz and Sporting Lisbon's Jose Alvalade stadium.

Organisers are proceeding on the basis that matches will be played behind closed-doors but UEFA is understood to have left the door open for possible changes should public health conditions in Portugal allow.

The teams already qualified for the quarter-finals are France's Paris St Germain, Italy's Atalanta, Spain's Atletico Madrid and Germany's RB Leipzig.

The remaining last 16 second-leg fixtures are Manchester City's home leg against Real Madrid, Chelsea's trip to Bayern Munich, Juventus's home game against Olympique Lyonnais and Napoli's visit to Barcelona.

Istanbul was due to host the 2020 final but will now, instead be the venue for the 2021 edition, with all other scheduled hosts moving back a year.

A similar format will be used to decide the Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;competition at German venues from Aug. 10.

The remaining last 16 games will be held at neutral venues in Germany with the 'Final Eight' held in Duisburg, Duesseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Cologne.

Manchester United, AS Roma and Inter Milan are among the teams still involved in the Europa&nbsp;League.

The traditional opener to the European season, the UEFA Super Cup, is expected to be held in Budapest on Sept. 24.

Champions League 'Final Eight' set to be held in Lisbon: Source

In ordinary circumstances Manchester City would have long since relinquished their Premier League crown to Liverpool.&nbsp;

Yet on Wednesday, days before the summer solstice, Pep Guardiola’s side will step out at the Etihad Stadium hoping to delay Liverpool’s inevitable coronation a while longer.

Three months after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Britain and left Liverpool agonisingly close to sealing the title, action resumes as City host Arsenal and Aston Villa welcome Sheffield United — the first of the 92 Premier League fixtures crammed into the next five weeks.

It will be a poignant evening, with both games played inside empty stadiums and marked before kickoff by a minute’s silence for the more than 40,000 people to die of the virus in the UK.

Both managers suffered personally during the tragic weeks that put soccer matches into perspective. Guardiola’s mother died from COVID-19 while Mikel Arteta, who left his post as Guardiola’s assistant in December to manage Arsenal, caught the virus in March but recovered.

Once the whistle blows, however, the competitive juices will kick in and their focus will be only on the next 90 minutes.

In many ways Wednesday’s clash is more crucial to Arsenal.

While City are 25 points adrift of runaway leaders Liverpool, who need two wins to secure their first title since 1990, Arsenal’s burst of form before the shutdown means they have pushed themselves into contention for a top-five finish.

As if this Premier League season was not strange enough, City’s European ban for breaching UEFA financial rules means that instead of needing to finish in the top-four to claim a Champions League spot, fifth is likely to suffice.

Arteta had revived Arsenal before the shutdown, the Gunners unbeaten in eight league games, winning three in a row.

They may be ninth, but are only five points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, having played one game fewer. Even though that game in hand is at City, keeper Bernd Leno thinks the circumstances favour the Gunners.

“We can surprise City because nobody has the rhythm. I’m sure we can have a good start,” he said. “Mikel (Arteta) knows every player and he knows the manager better than anyone.”
