Football players can be shown direct red or yellow cards for deliberately coughing at opponents or match referees under new guidelines issues by Engand’s Football Association (FA) amid the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

The instructions to referees taking charge of matches when COVID-19 restrictions are in place will come into force immediately while being applied at all levels of the game.

The FA document for referees stated that action should be taken when "the referee is certain someone deliberately, and from close range, coughed into the face of an opponent or match official..." while adding that the offence would fall under the category of "using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures" under which a player can be booked by the match official.&nbsp;

The document further said that referees must not book “routine” coughing while reminding players to avoid spitting on the ground – even though it doesn’t fall under an act of misconduct with many players in various top European leagues spotted spitting on the pitch regularly.

Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's brace in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

AFP Sport looks at three things we learned from the Wembley clash:

<h3>Irreplacable Aubameyang</h3>

In what could be his last game for Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showed why the Gunners must do everything in their power to keep the Gabon forward.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season and has been linked with a move amid reports he wants to play for a club in the Champions League.

Coach Mikel Arteta insists Aubameyang wants to stay, but he also conceded winning the FA Cup would be a useful way to show him the club are heading in the right direction.

Arsenal did their part and it was Aubameyang who provided the crucial cutting edge.

The first African player to start an FA Cup final as captain, Aubameyang became the second oldest player to score for Arsenal in the showpiece.

With Arsenal trailing to Christian Pulisic's early goal, Aubameyang's blistering break left Cesar Azpilicueta trailing in his wake.

Azpilicueta responded by tugging at Aubameyang's shoulder and the forward made the most of the contact as he tumbled in the area to win a penalty that he dispatched with a ruthless efficiency.

Aubameyang won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund in 2017, scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot.

Once again, he would be the star, but this time it was his skill and improvisation that proved decisive as he jinked past Kurt Zouma and clipped a fine finish over Willy Caballero in the 67th minute.

<h2>Chelsea hamstrung by Pulisic injury</h2>

Christian Pulisic had emerged as a key figure for Chelsea since the coronavirus hiatus, but a day that started on a high for the United States winger ended in agony.

It has been that kind of turbulent season for Pulisic, whose first year with Chelsea started slowly amid injuries and poor form before bursting into life.

He was on the scoresheet after just five minutes, with his 11th goal of the season.

Drifting into central midfield to take possession, Pulisic slipped a precise pass to Mason Mount and carried on his run into the Arsenal penalty area, where he took Olivier Giroud's flick and slotted past Emiliano Martinez.

Pulisic was the first American to score in the FA Cup final but disaster struck in the 49th minute when he raced away for a shot that was interrupted when he felt his hamstring twang.

Immediately grabbing the injured area, Pulisic was helped off the pitch.

Without the pace of Pulisic to keep Arsenal's defence on the back foot, Frank Lampard's side were bereft of a cutting edge in the final third as the trophy slipped from their grasp.

<h2>Arteta bolsters growing reputation</h2>

Mikel Arteta enhanced his reputation as one of the Premier League's brightest young managers with another tactical masterclass.

Having out-witted his mentor Pep Guardiola in Arsenal's FA Cup semi-final success against Manchester City, Arteta showed his acumen again to leave Chelsea boss Frank Lampard out of answers.

Arteta's use of long passes into the channels behind Chelsea's two attacking full-backs exposed the flaw in Lampard's defensive system and led directly to Aubameyang's equaliser.

Leading Arsenal to their 14th FA Cup success -- which brings them a place in next season's Europa League -- showed the 38-year-old Spaniard is the man to restore the club's tattered reputation.

Arsenal may have endured their lowest league finish for a quarter of a century this season as Arteta battled to steady the ship following Unai Emery's sacking in December.

But he has won over his players with a direct approach to discipline -- banishing malcontents Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi -- and his astute game-plans.

Winning the FA Cup will buy Arteta time to continue his rebuild and it was fitting his first trophy as Arsenal manager came in the tournament that brought the last major silverware of Gunners legend Arsene Wenger's reign.

Newcastle United fans say they have been treated with contempt after a 300 million-pound takeover bid from a Saudi-backed consortium collapsed on Thursday.

The group, which included Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers, announced they were ending their interest in the deal which had been delayed by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>’s owners and directors test.

The end of the Saudi bid left the North East club still in the hands of British businessman Mike Ashley, who has long faced protests and opposition from the fans.

Many Newcastle fans had welcomed the takeover, seeing it as a chance to boost the club’s fortunes through investment in new players.

But the bid had been criticised by human rights campaigners and had come up against questions about pirate broadcasts of Premier League games in Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle fans expressed frustration at the length of the Premier League’s scrutiny and press criticism of the takeover.

“The supporters of Newcastle United have been treated with contempt by large parts of the football media and the Premier League during this failed takeover process,” said the NUFC Supporters Trust.

“It’s been made clear that we are the least important people in a decision which affects us the most. We need answers,” they added.

Chi Onwurah, Labour Member of Parliament for Newcastle Central, said she would be contacting the Premier League.

“I know that many constituents will be disappointed and frustrated by the withdrawal of the latest NUFC takeover offer. I will be writing to the Premier League to ask why they took so long and gave so little clarity to NUFC fans,” she wrote on Twitter.

The city’s local newspaper, The Chronicle, published an open letter to the Premier League saying the team’s supporters were owed an explanation.

“A transformative but deeply controversial takeover is off. Having dreamed of something different, the city now confronts the reality of what Newcastle are: unloved, divorced from its people, deeply divided and facing the most uncertain of futures,” the paper wrote.

“The Premier League tonight stands accused of blocking a once-in-a-lifetime investment in the city and football club. It is a serious accusation that demands a response,” it added.

Noting that the Premier League has kept quiet, observing the confidential nature of the owners and directors test, the paper said the time had come for openness.

“But without clarity or the decency to even acknowledge the festering sores at one of your member clubs, we do not know. Left in the dark, Newcastle fans are furious tonight,” The Chronicle said.

The Premier League and Newcastle United did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Newcastle fans demand answers after Saudi bid collapses

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea should be aiming to fight for league titles every year, but winning the FA Cup on Saturday could be a building block towards a title challenge next season.

In his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, Lampard has guided Chelsea back into the Champions League next season despite the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and a transfer ban to contend with.

Chelsea are already making up for lost time in the transfer market with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech signed for next season.

But Lampard insists victory over Arsenal at Wembley will only lead to greater things if it is accompanied by the same dedication to improve as his squad have shown this season.

"It's a nice boost but it will only mean anything going forward if we take it in our pocket, move forward and improve as a club and on the training pitch," Lampard said on Friday.

"A top club will compete for cups and league titles every year. We did it for a long time.

"In the last few years we haven't been able to fight for that league title so it doesn't mean all of sudden we are back and in that picture, but it will be a nice, small step when you consider where we want to get to next year."

Lampard is able to welcome N'Golo Kante back from a hamstring injury that kept the French midfielder out for the last six games.

Willian is also fit again for what could be his final game for the club.

The Brazilian's contract expires at the end of the season, but Lampard has no doubts over using him at Wembley despite rumours he could be on his way to Arsenal next season.

Willian played a key role in getting Chelsea into the Premier League's top four with four goals since the season restarted in June.

"I've known Willian for many years now as a player and now as his coach," added Lampard of his former teammate.

"If anyone wants to see the mentality of him, it's been shown since restart.

"He's been fantastic for us, he's been fantastic this season. He's shown the right attitude.

"So I would expect nothing less than he's shown already, and that's Willian for you."

FA Cup win would be 'small step' in Lampard's plan for Chelsea

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> wanted the Saudi state to become a director of Newcastle United for a takeover deal to go through, according to a leading member of the investment group who were looking to buy the club.&nbsp;

A proposed £300 million ($391 million) takeover collapsed on Thursday when the investment group of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben and Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners said they had withdrawn their interest after three months waiting for the Premier League's approval.

Issues over Saudi piracy of sports broadcasting rights, including the Premier League, and pressure from human rights groups to block the deal complicated the process.

Staveley has been interested in buying the club for the past three years and had finally agreed a deal with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in April with PIF reportedly set to take an 80 percent stake in the club.

"The Premier League wanted the country, Saudi, to become a director of the football club," Staveley told The Athletic.

"That's what this is about. They were effectively saying 'PIF wouldn't be the ultimate beneficial owner, we believe it's actually the government, therefore we want the country to become a director'.

"The Premier League made it so hard. It would be unprecedented. No country has ever become a director of a club. It's ridiculous."

Staveley also claimed that other Premier League clubs played a part in influencing the league's decision to stall over seeing the deal through.

Newcastle have not won a major domestic trophy since 1955, but could still count on regular crowds of 50,000 before coronavirus pandemic forced stadiums to close.

Many fans dreamed that the riches of a Saudi-backed project could replicate Manchester City's success in winning four Premier League titles since Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008.

"We know that other clubs briefed heavily against it. Because they were jealous," Staveley added.

"Newcastle are the last great untapped club. The last great club with so much potential to grow and improve and with a fanbase who were already there and who wanted it so much."

Newcastle's all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer said the club's fans have been left angry and disappointed by the collapse of the takeover.

"There's a lot of anger, understandably so, and a massive amount of disappointment," Shearer told the BBC.

"They want their club to compete, they want their club to move forward, that's why yesterday was such a disappointing day."

Retail tycoon Ashley is a deeply unpopular figure among the Newcastle support for his treatment of fans and an unwillingness to invest on the field to improve the club's fortunes.

Newcastle have finished 13th in the Premier League table for the past two seasons and have twice been relegated to the Championship during Ashley's 13-year reign.

"We can only hope and pray that new owners come in at some stage and take the club back to where it belongs because that's what the fans of Newcastle deserve," said Shearer.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has raised his concerns about his side having to travel to Spain for their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/uefa-champions-league">UEFA Champions League</a> clash versus Barcelona amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in the country.

UEFA, earlier this month, confirmed that the remaining second-leg matches of Champions League round of 16 matches would be played in stadiums of the home team before the ‘Final-8’ of the elite competition is played in Lisbon, Portugal. The Europa League will be shifted to Germany.&nbsp;

Laurentiis said that while fear is coming from Spain, authorities in the football body is acting like nothing is wrong while adding he really doesn’t see why football should be played in a city that is in critical situation.

"I hear a lot of perplexity and fear coming from Spain and they're acting like nothing is wrong. What does it take to say, 'Don't go to Barcelona but rather go to Portugal, Germany or Geneva?" the Guardian quoted De Laurentiis as saying.

"If they've decided to play the Champions League in Portugal and the Europa League in Germany, I think we can go to Portugal or Germany for the last 16. I don't understand why it should stay in a city that has a really critical situation."

Napoli’s last-16 match with Barcelona is hanging in balance at 1-1 ahead of second leg at the iconic Camp Nou on August 8.&nbsp;

There has been a surge in COVID-19 positives in Spain with thousands of new cases reported on a daily basis, taking the country's total tally to over 303,000 cases.

Players from Sevilla, Real Madrid and Almeria tested positive for the virus this week.

I don't understand why it should stay in a city that has a really critical situation." Napoli’s last-16 match with Barcelona is hanging in balance at 1-1 ahead of second leg at the iconic Camp Nou on August 8. There has been a surge in COVID-19 positives in Spain with thousands of new cases reported on a daily basis, taking the country's total tally to over 303,000 cases. Players from Sevilla, Real Madrid and Almeria tested positive for the virus this week.

Napoli president raises concerns about Champions League tie vs Barcelona in Camp Nou

Juventus crashed to a humiliating 2-0 defeat at Cagliari on Wednesday, days after sealing their ninth consecutive Serie A title, prompting coach Maurizio Sarri to consider fielding his Under-23 team in Saturday's finale to conserve resources ahead of their Champions League challenge.

Cagliari's 20-year-old forward Luca Gagliano tapped in the opener eight minutes into his first Serie A match, beating veteran Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon to score his first top division goal.

And the young Italian then teed up Giovanni Simeone in first half stoppage time to give Cagliari their first win over Juventus in 11 years.

"The 40 goals conceded (this season) may be a concern, but tonight's game is not," said Sarri.&nbsp;

"We had nine injured and we came from a championship won 68 hours ago, so it was an atypical game that should be taken for what it is.&nbsp;

"We are the only ones in Europe who have played five games in 12 days, the League has created big problems for us.&nbsp;

"Let's see how we are tomorrow and if it is appropriate to line up the Under-23 team on Saturday against Roma to recover better."

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the chance to keep pace with Serie A's leading scorer Ciro Immobile, the Portuguese now four goals behind the Lazio forward's tally of 35 with one match remaining.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had a goal ruled offside after 16 minutes and was denied twice by Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno as the 13th-placed Sardinians ended their eight-match winless run.

It was a worrying performance for Sarri's side, who have won just two of their last seven games, with key forwards Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa fighting for fitness ahead of the Champions League showdown with Lyon on August 7 in Turin, when they need to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

<h2>- Immobile on target -</h2>

&nbsp;

In Rome, Immobile moved to within one goal of equalling the Serie A single season scoring record as Lazio beat relegated Brescia 2-0 to stay in the race for second place.

Immobile struck eight minutes from time to close in on Gonzalo Higuain's record of 36 goals, scored for Napoli in 2015-16.

Lazio are fourth, equal on 78 points with third-placed Atalanta, who beat Parma 2-1 on Tuesday, and one adrift of Inter Milan who are second following their 2-0 win over Napoli.

Inter and Atalanta will go head-to-head this weekend with Lazio's last game at seventh-placed Napoli.

Immobile helped Joaquin Correa open the scoring after 16 minutes at the Stadio Olimpico, with Correa returning the favour late on.

Behind the top four, who are assured of Champions League football next season, Roma sealed their Europa League group stage berth with a 3-2 win at Torino.

Napoli have already secured their place as a result of their Italian Cup win while AC Milan, who will finish sixth, must go through the Europa League qualifying rounds despite beating Sampdoria 4-1.

<h2>- Zlatan AKA 'Benjamin Button' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Stefano Pioli's side remain four points behind Roma after Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice and set up a third in a dominating display against Samp.

The 38-year-old got his head to an Ante Rebic cross within four minutes in Genoa for his fastest goal in the Italian top flight, before nodding the ball across for Hakan Calhanoglu to add the second six minutes after the break.&nbsp;

Turkish winger Calhanoglu provided the cross which allowed Ibrahimovic to add his second of the night.&nbsp;

Leao added a fourth in injury time as Milan extended their unbeaten run to 11 games.

Ibrahimovic has scored nine league goals since rejoining Milan in January.

The veteran brings his club tally to 51 goals for the club, combined with his previous stint between 2010 and 2012.

He also becomes the first player to have scored 50 goals for both Milan clubs, with 57 netted during his time at city rivals Inter from 2006 to 2009.

"Like Benjamin Button, I've always been young, never old," said Ibrahimovic of the film of a man who ages in reverse.

"They tell me I'm old and tired but I'm just warming up."

Lecce's bid for survival will go down to the final day after they came from behind to beat Udinese 2-1.&nbsp;

The southern club occupy the final relegation position but are now just one point behind 17th-placed Genoa, who were hammered 5-0 at Sassuolo.

Both Lecce and Genoa will face Parma and Hellas Verona respectively at the weekend hoping to avoid joining Brescia and SPAL in Serie B.

Sarri tempted to field Under-23 team as Juve crash to humiliating defeat

Frank Lampard has set his sights on capping an impressive first season as Chelsea manager by leading the Blues to FA Cup glory against Arsenal on Saturday.

Lampard enjoyed four FA Cup final victories as a Chelsea player, but getting his hands on the first trophy of his nascent managerial career would be an even more significant moment for the 42-year-old.

Having led Chelsea into next season's Champions League via a top four finish in the Premier League, Lampard heads to Wembley surfing a wave of positivity.

It is a testament to Lampard's acumen that, in just his second season as a manager, he has Chelsea positioned as an emerging force just 12 months after the club was in turmoil.

When Lampard arrived at Stamford Bridge in June 2019 after one season as boss of second tier Derby, he carried the good wishes of supporters who idolised him during his glittering 13-year spell with the club.

But there were many pundits who doubted whether Lampard was the right man to get Chelsea back on track following the turbulent reign of Maurizio Sarri.

The taciturn Sarri fell out with several of Chelsea's stars, alienating them with his monotonous training regime and inflexible tactics.

Fixing the fractures in Chelsea's dressing room wasn't the only problem facing Lampard, who also had to deal with the club's transfer ban last summer and the sale of Belgium playmaker Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.&nbsp;

Even for an experienced boss, it would have been a daunting situation, but Lampard has risen to the challenge.

"There were a lot of unknowns when I came in, could we move forward without Eden Hazard? We knew we had lost a massive player," Lampard said.

"We've a real spirit within the group now and it's a real team effort now."

With his hands tied by the transfer embargo, Lampard was compelled to give some of the club's youngsters a chance to prove their worth.

That they responded so tenaciously and with such verve was a tribute to Lampard's influence.

The energy and optimism provided by Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, Billy Gilmour and Fikayo Tomori gave the entire club a jolt of adrenaline.

A swaggering 5-2 win at Wolves in September served notice that Lampard and his young prodigies wouldn't be out of their depth, while a mature 1-0 Champions League win at Ajax showed they could handle Europe's elite.

<h2>- Midas touch -</h2>

Lampard's midas touch hasn't been restricted to the young guns.

He coaxed consistency from Willian and brought Olivier Giroud back into the fold after the French striker had appeared set to leave in January.

Exiled in the first half of the season, Giroud's prolific form since the coronavirus hiatus -- seven goals in 10 matches in all competitions -- played a key role in Chelsea holding onto their top four berth.

"What we've done this season is take the opportunity to bring in the younger players and improve the existing players," Lampard said.

At a club where owner Roman Abramovich dispenses with managers in ruthless fashion, Lampard showed he wasn't intimidated by twice dropping error-prone goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga despite the club's fears it could harm his future transfer value.

Lampard's furious response to perceived antagonism from Liverpool's coaching staff during their recent clash at Anfield was another sign he isn't to be trifled with.

While Chelsea's progress under Lampard has been undeniable, they still lost 12 times in the league for only the second time since Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

Unable to fix Chelsea's defensive frailties and often frustrated by their lack of cutting edge, Lampard has been busy in the transfer market and more new signings are on the way.

Lampard needs Leipzig striker Timo Werner and Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech to hit the ground running next season.

He has also been linked with Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson, West Ham's Declan Rice and Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz as he tries to bridge the 33-point gap to Liverpool.

"The challenge now is to see what more we can do next season," Lampard said.

Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo could face sanctions for failing to turn up at training with Barcelona, who concluded a deal to sell him to Juventus a month ago.

The Catalan club say the player is under contract until the end of the season and have demanded he return, with the local press claiming he was in his native Brazil.

"The player has not joined the squad as expected and we are considering a course of action," a club statement said.

Arthur has been sold to Juventus in a deal worth 72 million euros ($81 million) with Bosnian playmaker Miralem Pjanic moving in the opposite direction for a similar fee at season's end.

The player had been reluctant to leave the Camp Nou and even released a statement in April, insisting his "idea was clear" and that he wanted to play at Barcelona "for many years".&nbsp;

Barca coach Quique Setien said in a press conference at the time of the sale: "We expect the greatest commitment from him until the last day he is here."

Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo say the player maintains Setien had told him he had played his last game with the La Liga club. Arthur has not featured for Barca since the transfer was announced on June 29.

Historic Indian football club Mohun Bagan on Wednesday went global as it became country’s first ever sports entity to feature on NASDAQ billboards in New York’s Times Square.

On July 29 every year, Mohun Bagan Day is celebrated to commemorate the team’s iconic IFA Shield triumph in 1911 when the club defeated East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 while becoming the first Indian football club to end British dominance on the tournament.

The 131-year-old Kolkata-based club has millions of supporters across the globe but the American stock exchange paying tribute on its billboard holds special significance.

"It is a matter of great pride for all Mohun Bagan fans and supporters. It shows the kind of stature the club enjoys. No Indian sports club has ever featured on something like this, so it is significant, very different," Mohun Bagan's top official Debashis Dutta told PTI.

UEFA says it is confident that Real Madrid’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/uefa-champions-league">Champions League</a> second-leg match against Manchester City, scheduled to be played at Etihad Stadium in Manchester next week, will go ahead as planned despite one player of the Spanish side testing positive for COVID-19.

Real Madrid on Tuesday confirmed that forward Mariano Diaz had tested positive for the virus, casting fresh doubts on the much-awaited tie, scheduled for August 8 in Manchester.

“UEFA is in contact with the club and monitoring both the situation and decisions of the relevant Spanish authorities,” UEFA said in a statement.&nbsp;

“We are confident that this case will not affect the regular staging of the match in question.”

Real Madrid trail Man City 2-1 from the first leg of their round of 16 encounter before the tournament was suspended in March due to coronavirus outbreak.

Meanwhile, Spain has seen a spike in COVID-19 positives with thousands of new cases being reported on daily basis, taking its tally up to over 298,000 cases.

While Mariano’s participation in the tie is highly unlikely as he would be self-isolating himself, Man City’s Sergio Aguero is also a major doubt for the clash after undergoing a surgery.

UEFA says it is confident that Real Madrid’s Champions League second-leg match against Manchester City, scheduled to be played at Etihad Stadium in Manchester next week, will go ahead as planned despite one player of the Spanish side testing positive for COVID-19. Real Madrid on Tuesday confirmed that forward Mariano Diaz had tested positive for the virus, casting fresh doubts on the much-awaited tie, scheduled for August 8 in Manchester. “UEFA is in contact with the club and monitoring both the situation and decisions of the relevant Spanish authorities,” UEFA said in a statement. UEFA confident positive coronavirus test won't affect Man City-Real Madrid tie

UEFA’s claim that Manchester City “disguised equity funding” from their owners was “unsubstantiated” but the club showed “blatant disregard” to the Financial Fair Play investigation, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Tuesday.

The CAS panel that heard Premier League City’s appeal published their full reasoning for overturning the English club’s two-year ban from European football earlier this month.

The decision allows City to compete in next season’s elite Champions League competition.

Sport’s highest court also reduced the fine for City’s failure to cooperate with UEFA to 10 million euros ($11.72 million) from 30 million euros.

European soccer’s governing body UEFA ruled in February that City had committed serious FFP breaches and failed to cooperate with its investigation.

The FFP regulations are designed to stop clubs running up big losses through spending on players. They also ensure sponsorship deals are based on their real market value and are genuine commercial agreements and not ways for owners to pump cash into a club to get around the rules.

UEFA opened an investigation into City in March 2019 after the publication of ‘Football Leaks’ documents led to allegations that the club’s Abu Dhabi owners inflated sponsorship agreements to comply with the FFP requirements.

The leaked documents included club emails which referred to money being “routed” through sponsors.

CAS ruled that the leaked documents could be used as evidence but noted that they did not prove the existence of any actual transactions that broke UEFA’s rules and no evidence was produced that such payments were carried out.

The court also pointed out that the leaked emails were distributed internally and not sent to sponsors or other parts of the club’s United Arab Emirates based owners.

The panel also said that some of UEFA’s charges related to material that was over five years old and was therefore time-barred according to UEFA’s own rules.

City did not supply UEFA’s investigation with the original emails related to the leaked documents but CAS also noted that UEFA did not “pursue” that evidence before the hearing.

“UEFA’s approach in this regard is understood, because it was faced with a dilemma between trying to obtain additional evidence and having an award issued before the start of the 2020/2021 UEFA club competitions season,” said the CAS panel.

Explaining the decision to overturn the ban, CAS said that the charge of “dishonest concealment of equity”, which was unproven, was more serious than the failure to cooperate with UEFA’s investigation.

“The majority of the panel therefore does not consider it appropriate to impose any ban... for MCFC’s failure to cooperate with the investigations alone,” the judgment concluded.

Jurgen Klopp was voted the League Managers' Association Manager of the Year on Monday after ending Liverpool's 30-year wait to win the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>.

Klopp led Liverpool to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title in the same season they were FIFA Club World champions.

The German's award was announced by former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson, after whom the trophy is now named.

"Jurgen, fantastic," Ferguson said on Sky Sports. "We speak about Leeds spending 16 years in the Championship, but Liverpool 30 years since winning that league, incredible.

"You thoroughly deserved it. The performance level of your team was outstanding. Your personality runs right throughout the whole club. It was a marvellous performance.

"I'll forgive you for waking me up at 3.30am to tell me you have won the league! Thank you, but anyway, you thoroughly deserved it. Well done."

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp said of Ferguson: "I know it's not 100 percent appropriate as a Liverpool manager but I admire him. I remember he was the first British manager I met.

"We had breakfast. I'm not sure how much he remembers but I remember because for me this moment was like meeting the Pope. It was absolutely great and from that first season we clicked.

"I didn't think at this moment I would have a trophy in my hands named after him."

Chris Wilder, last year's winner of the award, settled for the runner-up spot this time after Sheffield United's impressive first season back in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Klopp wants to retain a lean squad to ensure Liverpool remain competitive next season.

The Reds boss used 24 players in the Premier League this term.

Klopp gave chances to some of the club's academy players in the FA and League Cups to cope with fixture congestion.

But he believes keeping as small a core as possible keeps the players on their toes.

"The solution cannot be to have a much bigger squad for the specific moment and then realise you cannot use all the players," Klopp said.

"These players can only play the football they play because they know they are needed.

"They are all human beings and nobody can be held back for a year and then on the last day of the year be told, 'Now we need you'.

"In between now and then there must be a lot of training and support and challenges stuff like this.

"The size of the squad is not that important to me, the quality of the squad is very much so."

Manchester United and Chelsea sealed Champions League places on Sunday as Bournemouth and Watford fell through the trapdoor on a dramatic final day of the longest <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season.

Liverpool were crowned champions last month but there was much to play for in the final 90 minutes of a campaign that started on August 9 last year and was interrupted by a three-month coronavirus shutdown.

United finished third after a nervy 2-0 win in a Champions League shootout against Leicester, while Chelsea ended in fourth spot after beating Wolves by the same scoreline at Stamford Bridge.

At the other end of the table, Bournemouth and managerless Watford followed already-relegated Norwich down to the Championship while Aston Villa fans breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Leicester, in fifth spot, will play in the Europa League next season where they will be joined by Tottenham, who drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace to leapfrog Wolves.

Wolves still have two routes to qualify for European competition next season -- either into the Champions League by winning the Europa League next month or into the Europa League if Chelsea beat Arsenal in next week's FA Cup final.

<h2>- Chelsea come good -</h2>

&nbsp;

Chelsea required just a draw at Stamford Bridge to seal their place in the top four, but won all three points in first half stoppage time as Mason Mount whipped in from a free-kick before Olivier Giroud slid home.

A top-four finish and a Cup final in his first season in charge is a coup for Frank Lampard, who had to cope with a transfer ban and the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer.

"There were a lot of unknowns when I came in, could we move forward without Eden Hazard?" Lampard told Sky Sports.&nbsp;

"We knew we had lost a massive player. We've a real spirit within the group now and it's a real team effort now.

"Myself and the staff want to improve every time -- the challenge now is to see what more we can do next season."

United, whose form has dipped in recent weeks after they pulled themselves back into contention for the Champions League, were locked at 0-0 at half-time at the King Power Stadium.

But they finally broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, when Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after&nbsp;Anthony Martial was upended. Jesse Lingard scored late to seal the win.

The result is a huge lift for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose team were 14 points behind the Foxes at the start of the year, but is a bitter blow for Brendan Rodgers, whose side have been camped in the top four for almost the entire campaign.

"I'm delighted," said Solskjaer. "We've come from way, way behind teams and gone past them. We've shown that we've got the consistency, the right mentality. We're building a group and a performance culture here that we can be proud of."

<h2>- 'Incredibly painful' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a strike by Kieran Tierney gave Watford, who sacked Nigel Pearson earlier this month, an almost impossible task at Arsenal.

A Troy Deeney penalty and a Danny Welbeck strike gave them hope but it was not enough and the Hornets were relegated after five years in the top-flight following their 3-2 defeat.&nbsp;

"This is a reflection of the whole year," Deeney told Sky Sports. "Not quite been good enough. Heartbreaking for the people who work behind the scenes and we feel sorry for them."

Bournemouth beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park but needed&nbsp;West Ham to beat Aston Villa to survive.

Andriy Yarmolenko equalised after Jack Grealish's late goal for Villa but the away side held on, sending Eddie Howe's side down after five seasons in the Premier League.

"It's incredibly painful -- we always believed we were capable of a last-minute escape," Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe told the BBC.

An early goal by Harry Kane put Tottenham in front against Crystal Palace. Palace equalised early in the second half through Jeffrey Schlupp but the point was enough for Jose Mourinho's men to finish in sixth position.

Liverpool beat Newcastle 3-1 to finish the season on 99 points -- the second-highest tally in English top-flight history behind only Manchester City's 100 points in 2017/18.

Second-placed City finished the campaign with a flourish, thumping Norwich 5-0 to reach 102 goals with Kevin De Bruyne scoring twice and matching Thierry Henry's record of 20 assists in a Premier League season.

Elsewhere, Brighton beat Burnley 2-1 and Southampton beat Sheffield United 3-1.

Leicester's Jamie Vardy won the Golden Boot with 23 goals, one clear of Aubameyang and Southampton's Danny Ings.

Man Utd, Chelsea seal top-four spots as Watford, Bournemouth relegated

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hit back at his Chelsea counterpart Frank Lampard by suggesting the Blues boss still has a lot to learn after branding the new English champions "arrogant."

During Liverpool's 5-3 win between the sides on Wednesday, Lampard became embroiled in a row with Klopp's assistant Pepijn Lijnders over a foul that led to the free-kick from which Trent Alexander-Arnold scored to make it 2-0.

"Fair play to Liverpool Football Club, they've won the league, but also don't get too arrogant with it," Lampard said in a post-match interview.

Klopp rejected that suggestion and said Lampard should learn to let any confrontations during the 90 minutes go at full time.

"You cannot hit me and my bench with something like that because we are not arrogant," said Klopp.

"Frank was obviously in a really competitive mood and I respect that a lot. From my point of view in this sort of situation you can say pretty much what you want. For me, after the game it is completely over.

"I said a lot in the past because it is pure emotion, he came here to win the game or get a point, to make Champions League qualification, and I respect that a lot.

"But what he has to learn is to finish it with the final whistle and he didn't do that."

A clip of the foul-mouthed argument between the benches went viral with Lampard's words clearly audible in an empty stadium.

"I think in terms of the language I used, I do regret that, because I think these things get replayed a lot on social media," said Lampard.

"I've got two young daughters who are on social media, so I do regret that."

On the field, Lampard has to concentrate on getting at least a point from Sunday's visit of Wolves to Stamford Bridge to ensure Chelsea secure a place in the Champions League next season.

The visitors need a victory to guarantee a place in the Europa League next season.

Chelsea will also be sure of a top-four finish if Manchester United win at Leicester.

"What is absolutely important is the players focus on themselves because it is in our own hands, and that is the job I'll do because we can't affect what is going on elsewhere," added Lampard.

"We have to try to get over the line. We have character in the group, we have quality and we have a good opponent coming and it is on us now."

"But what he has to learn is to finish it with the final whistle and he didn't do that." A clip of the foul-mouthed argument between the benches went viral with Lampard's words clearly audible in an empty stadium. "I think in terms of the language I used, I do regret that, because I think these things get replayed a lot on social media," said Lampard. "I've got two young daughters who are on social media, so I do regret that." On the field, Lampard has to concentrate on getting at least a point from Sunday's visit of Wolves to Stamford Bridge to ensure Chelsea secure a place in the Champions League next season.

Switzerland's top prosecutor resigned Friday following a drawn-out controversy over his handling of a corruption investigation targeting FIFA, citing a court ruling partially upholding accusations against him.

"In the interest of the institution, I offer my resignation," Attorney General Michael Lauber said in a statement.

Lauber, 54, has faced multiple investigations over his handling of the FIFA probe, in particular over a number of alleged secret meetings with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

In March, a disciplinary investigation found he had repeatedly lied when questions were raised about those meetings and the overall investigations of top FIFA executives since 2015, and ordered him to be docked eight percent of his salary.

Lauber appealed that ruling, and on Friday Switzerland's Federal Administrative Court did find that the disciplinary panel had been harsh in its ruling, and reduced his penalty to a five percent reduction in pay.

However, it upheld a majority of the accusations against him, finding that the "confirmed breaches of official duty and their seriousness still justify the decision... to opt for the most severe type of disciplinary sanction possible".

"I respect the decision of the Federal Administrative Court," said Lauber, adding that he firmly rejected accusations he had lied in the case.

The Football Writers’ Association on Friday announced that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been selected as the Footballer of the Year for 2019-20 season after Reds ended a 30-year wait to lift the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> trophy.

The Liverpool skipper saw off competition from Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and as well as Virgil Van Dijk and Sadio Mane to claim the coveted honour, the older individual award in the world.

Two other Liverpool players, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Allison Becker also received votes with the newly-crowned Premier League champions dominating the voting process.&nbsp;

As well as the top five of Henderson, De Bruyne, Rashford, Van Dijk and Mane, ten other players received votes from FWA members including Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Raheem Sterling, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Sergio Aguero, Adama Traore, Danny Ings, Jack Grealish, James Madison and Jonny Evans.

Henderson said: “I’d like to say how appreciative I am of the support of those who voted for me and the Football Writers’ Association in general. You only have to look at the past winners of it, a number of whom I’ve been blessed to play with here at Liverpool, like Stevie (Gerrard), Luis (Suarez) and Mo (Salah) to know how prestigious it is.

"But as grateful as I am I don’t feel like I can accept this on my own. I don’t feel like anything I’ve achieved this season or in fact during my whole career has been done on my own. I owe a lot to so many different people – but none more so than my current teammates – who have just been incredible and deserve this every bit as much as I do.

“We’ve only achieved what we’ve achieved because every single member of our squad has been brilliant. And not just in matches. Not just in producing the moments that make the headlines and the back pages but every day in training.&nbsp;

“The players who’ve started the most games for us this season have been as good as they have been because of our culture and our environment at Melwood. No one individual is responsible for that – it’s a collective effort and that’s how I view accepting this honour.

“I accept it on behalf of this whole squad, because without them I’m not in a position to be receiving this honour. These lads have made me a better player – a better leader and a better person.

“If anything I hope those who voted for me did so partly to recognise the entire team’s contribution.

"Individual awards are nice and they are special and I will cherish this one. But an individual award without the collective achievement wouldn’t mean anywhere as much to me – if anything at all.”

The Footballer of the Year trophy has been awarded since 1948 when Sir Stanley Matthews was its first recipient.

Maurizio Sarri slammed a "messy" performance as Juventus fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at struggling Udinese on Thursday to miss the chance to seal the Serie A title for the ninth time in a row.

Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt had put the defending champions ahead&nbsp;three minutes before the break in Udine.

But a diving Ilija Nestorovski header seven minutes after the interval got Udinese level with Seko Fofana scoring the winner in injury time.

Juventus remain six points ahead of second-placed Atalanta with three games left to play, and have another chance to seal the title for the 36th time on the pitch at home against 14th-placed Sampdoria on Sunday.

Maurizio Sarri's side need just three more points and the coronation could come on Saturday, depending on the results of their rivals Atalanta, Inter Milan and Lazio. &nbsp;

But Juventus's performance against the minnows from the north-east was worrying ahead of their crunch Champions League last 16 game against Lyon on August 7.&nbsp;

"We paid for a lack of order after a good first half," said Sarri.

"We wanted to win at all costs, we were messy and we took the game on a dangerous track and lost it on 93 minutes because we wanted the three points.

"At this stage of the season it is difficult, we are all tired.&nbsp;We have lost aggression."

The game started with a clumsy header from Danilo, which almost resulted in an own goal before bouncing off Wojciech Szczesny's post.&nbsp;

Udinese keeper Juan Musso denied Paulo Dybala -- who was wearing the Juventus captain's armband -- after 13 minutes with Ronaldo's long-range effort wide before De Ligt broke through, smashing in after 42 minutes.

Back after the break, Nestorovski took advantage of an Alex Sandro error to equalise, getting his head to a cross from on-loan Watford midfielder Ken Sema to beat Szczesny.

And two minutes into extra time, Ivorian international Fofana capped a solid match by getting the better of De Ligt to all but ensure Udinese of staying in Serie A with his third goal this season.

It was a precious three points for Udinese who move up to 15th position, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

"Juventus wanted to win the championship, but we had a great game," said Fofana.

"We said beforehand that (relegation rivals) Lecce were going strong and we had to push forward."

Lazio, 11 points behind Juventus in fourth, play at Cagliari later on Thursday.

Juve miss chance to seal title after Udinese defeat

The longest <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season on record will finally come to a close on Sunday just two weeks short of a calendar year since it began, but the fact it will finish on the pitch at all is cause for celebration after months of uncertainty caused by coronavirus.

In the 100 days without play between March 9 and June 17 there were huge doubts the season could be restarted in the country with the highest death toll from COVID-19 in Europe.

The return of the world's richest league has not been flawless. Empty stands have seen matches played out to the echoes of players' cries to each other rather than the atmosphere generated by full houses.

Water breaks in each half, even in matches played in rainy English conditions, and the chance for each side to make five substitutes have further disrupted the flow of a league that often sells itself on a fast-paced product.

But amid the backdrop of financial ruin that cancelling the season would have caused, those imperfections and a few drab matches were worth living with for most.

"You make the best of what you can," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after his side lifted the Premier League trophy at the famous Kop end at Anfield.

"Everything would be better with fans but for months we knew that would be impossible. A few months ago I thought it was impossible that we play football."

By returning even behind closed doors, the financial implications for the Premier League of a potential £1 billion ($1.3 billion) loss have been mitigated but not completely eradicated.

English top-flight clubs are reportedly facing a rebate bill of around £330 million to broadcasters as matches could not be completed on schedule.

<h2>- Broadcasters kept on side -</h2>

Matchday income has also been lost with no fans in the stands and it remains uncertain if and when they can return for the 2020/21 season, which is due to start in September.

Broadcasters were kept on side, though, by being awarded rights to more live games, many of which were shown on free-to-air in the UK, and a made-for-TV schedule that saw just four days without a Premier League game between June 17 and July 22.

Free-to-air games also had the added benefit of maintaining public interest with Southampton's 1-0 victory over Manchester City shown on the BBC breaking the Premier League record with a domestic audience of 5.7 million viewers.

By completing the season on the field, the Premier League has also avoided potentially very costly legal cases when it comes to who is promoted, relegated and qualifies for European competitions next season.

Liverpool got the chance to win a first league title for 30 years without the asterisk of a season decided on points-per-game, while the battles for a place in the Champions League, Europa League and to stay in the top flight will go down to the final day.

<h2>- Rigorous testing -</h2>

Fears that the financial motivations for "Project Restart" would outweigh concerns over player welfare have also been eased by a rigorous, twice-weekly testing programme that has resulted in just eight positive cases from the last 15,599 tests over the past five weeks.

Project Restart has also given the Premier League a worldwide platform to support to the Black Lives Matter movement with each match beginning with players, staff and officials taking a knee to protest against racial injustice.

On the field, there are even more signs of a bright future for English football with the emerging talents of Manchester United's Mason Greenwood, Phil Foden of Manchester City and Arsenal's Bukayo Saka among the star performers of the past five weeks.

However, some of the concerns over football's return were realised as fans in Liverpool and Leeds ignored pleas to stay away from stadiums to celebrate their long-awaited title triumphs.

A total of 13 arrests were made outside Anfield and Elland Road on Wednesday as thousands gathered on the night both the Premier League and Championship trophies were presented.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters described the scenes of mass gatherings of celebration in Liverpool last month as "regrettable".

But little else has gone wrong for the Premier League's master plan as a season like no other ends as well as could have been hoped for five weeks ago.

Premier League pulls off 'Project Restart' without a hitch

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> champions Liverpool should not become too arrogant after being left unimpressed with the behaviour of their bench during Wednesday’s 5-3 Premier League defeat.

Lampard was involved in an exchange with Liverpool’s bench after a free kick was awarded against Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic. Trent Alexander-Arnold found the net from the free kick to make it 2-0.

“For me it wasn’t a foul from Kovacic,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “There were a lot of things that were ongoing and on the bench ... I’ve got no problem with Juergen Klopp, he’s managed this team and it’s fantastic.

“Some of the bench, it’s a fine line between when you are winning - and they’ve won the league, fair play to Liverpool Football Club - but also don’t get too arrogant with it.

“That was my thing, but (it’s) done. In match play you get emotional and that was it.”

Defeat left Chelsea fourth on 63 points, trailing Manchester United on goal difference. Lampard’s side need only a point from their final match on Sunday against Wolverhampton Wanderers to seal a place in next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has said Premier League champions Liverpool should not become too arrogant after being left unimpressed with the behaviour of their bench during Wednesday’s 5-3 Premier League defeat. In match play you get emotional and that was it.” Defeat left Chelsea fourth on 63 points, trailing Manchester United on goal difference. Lampard’s side need only a point from their final match on Sunday against Wolverhampton Wanderers to seal a place in next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea's Lampard tells Liverpool not to get too arrogant

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his side will need to keep improving to hold off the chasing pack next season <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/liverpool-lift-premier-league-trophy-fans-pour-out-on-streets-to-celebrate-despite-virus-warnings-315315">after lifting the Premier League trophy</a>.

The Reds clinched the title last month, but finally got their hands on the silverware after a 5-3 win over Chelsea on Wednesday.

Chelsea have already strengthened ahead of next season with the signings of a long-term Liverpool target Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

Klopp also expects Manchester City and Manchester United to bolster their squads.

But the German believes there is still improvement for his players to make despite becoming English, European and world champions over the past 14 months.

"We should not stop, we have internal challenges to improve," said Klopp.

"We have the chance to make another step, but we have to because the others will not sleep.

"Chelsea is such a talented team, we had to bring everything on the pitch tonight. Man Utd, Man City (will contend), there are no guarantees for anything, but we will try."

Liverpool also beat Chelsea to lift the UEFA Super Cup at the start of the season to go with the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup and Klopp admitted he will take time for a special momento after an incredible run of success.

"We are champions of England, Europe and the world. We won four trophies, really big ones, so I couldn't be more proud," he added.

"I'm usually not a person who needs pictures but I will have a picture with all four trophies because it doesn't happen often, so we should."

Jordan Henderson had the honour of becoming the first Liverpool player to lift the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> trophy and the Reds' captain believes the manner of victory over a Chelsea side, who needed a result to confirm their place in the Champions League next season, bodes well for what can be achieved next season.

"It's been a journey and to finish it off like this is really special," said Henderson.

"After this, next season is going to be a big challenge for us. But I thought tonight we showed the mentality to come and perform again and get the result we did."

'The others won't sleep': Klopp wants even more from Liverpool

A total of 13 arrests were made in Liverpool and Leeds as thousands of fans gathered outside stadiums on Wednesday night to celebrate their clubs' title triumphs despite warnings to stay at home.

Merseyside Police introduced a 48-hour dispersal zone around Liverpool's Anfield stadium during the club's match against Chelsea.

Nine arrests were made as large numbers congregated outside the Kop end, where Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy after a 5-3 victory.

Ahead of the match in Liverpool, the club, council, police and supporters' group Spirit of Shankly had urged people to celebrate from their homes due to ongoing concerns over the spread of coronavirus.

"Although the numbers who gathered last night could have been significantly higher, it is still disappointing that people did not listen to requests from ourselves, Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool City Council not to gather in large numbers because of the risks still posed by COVID-19," said Merseyside police assistant chief constable Natalie Perischine.

Thousands of supporters also celebrated outside Anfield last month when the team's first top-flight title in 30 years was confirmed and huge numbers gathered at the city's Pier Head the following night, where police reported violent confrontations.

"Officers made a total of nine arrests outside Anfield last night for affray, assault, people who were drunk and disorderly and drug-driving," added Perischine.

Leeds defended the club's decision for players to parade the Championship trophy in an open-top bus at Elland Road after their 4-0 win over Charlton on Wednesday.

In a repeat of scenes outside Elland Road when promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years was confirmed on Friday, thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate.

Four arrests were made and a police officer suffered minor injuries.

Fans were then joined by the players on the bus after their pitchside trophy presentation had concluded.

"Following consultation with the SAG (Safety Advisory Group) and (Leeds City) Council, Leeds United arranged for a bus to be parked outside the East Stand reception as a contingency to assist dispersal should a crowd congregate at Elland Road, despite a month-long campaign from the club and supporter groups to encourage supporters to stay at home," said a club spokesman.

"The safety group believed that a brief appearance from the players with the Championship trophy would help to signal an end to proceedings, encouraging fans to head home safely.

"In challenging circumstances fan safety has always been our priority."

Watch: Henderson's shuffle to dressing room celebrations as Liverpool lift Premier League trophy

Liverpool great Graeme Souness has hailed the "incredible" consistency of Jurgen Klopp's champions as they prepare to receive the Premier League trophy at Anfield on Wednesday.

Liverpool, who won the title with a record seven games to spare, have lost just four matches over the past two seasons in the English top flight.

Captain Jordan Henderson will lift the trophy after their match against Chelsea.

"It's not just this season, it's the last two years, the consistency levels have been incredible," Souness, who skippered Liverpool to three league titles, told the BBC.

"They just missed out (on the title) last year, but they are the current Premier League champions, World Club champions and European champions.

"Their consistency is just off the charts and I know how hard it is to achieve that."

Souness, who won five league titles and three European Cups in his time as a player at Liverpool and later managed the club, singled out Senegalese forward Sadio Mane for praise.

"I enjoy watching (Sadio) Mane -- the hardest thing to do is be a striker in the game," he said.

"He's a warrior, he's got great skills and his attitude is always spot on. He's never a 95 percent, he's 100 percent all the time."

The 67-year-old Scot, a tough-tackling midfielder, said he was also impressed by his modern-day successors in the engine room.

"They have a really hard-working midfield that never give their opponents peace if they are on the ball, they are after you all the time," he said.&nbsp;

"But forget the individuals -- they work as a team and that's what makes them so special. They are all at it every time they go across the white line."

<h2>- 'Demons' -</h2>

Another former Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, came agonisingly close to lifting the trophy himself under Klopp's predecessor Brendan Rodgers.

The 40-year-old, who won the Champions League with his hometown club but never tasted Premier League glory, said the title win had exorcised some ghosts.

One moment of ill-fortune in 2014 famously cost Gerrard his last chance of winning a league title as his slip allowed Demba Ba to open the scoring for Chelsea in a costly defeat at Anfield.

"It was fantastic for everyone connected to the club but it was mixed in many ways because of my own experiences being a fan and being an ex-player," said Gerrard, now manager of Rangers.

"A lot of demons were put to bed, not all of them, but certainly I felt a lot better when Liverpool got over the line recently.

"I look back every day (at not winning a Premier League title) and I think I will forever and ever. It is the one that eludes me in terms of being a player and it would have completed the set."

Souness in awe of Liverpool's consistency as they are crowned champions

Wolves moved closer to a place in the Europa League with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Sheffield United's own European hopes were dashed by a 1-0 defeat against Everton on Monday.

At the other end of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> table, Brighton guaranteed their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> survival with a 0-0 draw against Newcastle.

Wolves, now unbeaten in three games, opened the scoring four minutes before half-time at Molineux.

Andros Townsend lost possession and Joao Moutinho found Matt Doherty, who crossed for Portuguese midfielder Daniel Podence to head his first goal for Wolves.

Jonny condemned Palace to a seventh successive defeat in the 68th minute, turning to fire home from close-range after Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez carved open the Palace defence.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side climbed to sixth place, one point above Tottenham, and will be certain to qualify for the Europa League if they win at Chelsea in their last game of the season on Sunday.

They would also qualify if Tottenham lose at Palace in their final match.

"The idea of improvement and the building process makes sense and today we achieved two more points than last season with one game to go," Nuno said.

"Sunday's game is very difficult but let's prepare well and compete."

At Bramall Lane, Sheffield United were handed a second successive defeat, ending their bid to cap a superb first season back in the top-flight by earning a European berth.

Carlo Ancelotti's team won it in the 46th minute when Brazil forward Richarlison met Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick with a glancing header for his 15th goal of the season.

Chris Wilder's eighth placed side are five points behind Wolves and four points adrift of Tottenham with one game left.

"I'm disappointed for the players today. But what you try and do in a season is get your club to overachieve and we have ridiculously overachieved," Wilder said.

"Top six should never have been in the equation from the minute we set foot into the division. There are a lot of clubs that would swap places with us."

The teams who finish fifth and sixth are certain to reach next season's Europa League.

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top six, then seventh place would also qualify for the Europa League.

Arsenal, who face third-placed Chelsea in the FA Cup final, are currently 10th, meaning Tottenham are in danger of a first season without Europe competition since 2009-10.

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton got the point they needed to be mathematically certain of avoiding relegation.

Graham Potter's side were already virtually certain to stay up before the match because their goal difference is far superior to third-from-bottom Aston Villa -- the only team in the relegation zone who could have caught them.

Brighton have won just two of their last 17 league games, but ending a run of three successive home defeats moved them seven points clear of the bottom three, with Villa having just two games left.

Wolves bolster Europa League bid, Blades blunted by Everton

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola took a swipe at Arsenal on Monday by admitting he does not respect them off the pitch.

Guardiola's side were knocked out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage by Arsenal on Saturday as the Gunners won 2-0 at Wembley.

Guardiola was impressed by Arsenal's play under his former assistant Mikel Arteta, but he made a distinction in his thoughts about the north London club when it comes to their approach away from the pitch.

Guardiola's anger with Arsenal is thought to come from the role they played in the group of eight Premier League clubs perceived to have turned on City during their successful appeal against a two-year Champions league ban.

The group wrote to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), to try to ensure any attempt by City to delay their two-year ban while their appeal was ongoing was dismissed.

City had their ban overturned by CAS earlier this month, but Guardiola told reporters: "The opponents always deserve my respect and credit, and Arsenal, they have it.

"I have all the respect for what Arsenal are on the pitch -- not much off the pitch, but on the pitch a lot.&nbsp;

So I congratulate them and good luck against Chelsea in the final."

Meanwhile, Guardiola says he is "optimistic" as City prepare to resume their bid for Champions League glory against Real Madrid.

City will host the Spanish champions in the second leg of their last 16 tie on August 7.

Guardiola's side hold a 2-1 lead from the first meeting in Madrid in February.

City only have two Premier League games to play before the visit of Zinedine Zidane's men.

They were well below their best against Arsenal but Guardiola pledged to learn from that performance and is confident his team will be ready for Real.

"Part of the good work Arsenal have done, I give them a lot of credit for, what they did, how good they defended," Guardiola told reporters on Monday.

"We didn't do it properly. We had enough chances to score goals and we didn't do it. I just congratulate them, learn from this and prepare for Madrid. We move forward, it's forgotten.

"Now we are incredibly excited and incredibly optimistic about the game against Madrid, for the players we have.

"We know if we play at a decent level, higher than we played against Arsenal, we'll have our chance. If not, we'll be out."

Next season will be Guardiola's fifth at City, meaning he will have stayed at the club longer than his previous jobs at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

"I've never been five years in one club, to see if we will be able to maintain the levels that we have in the previous seasons," he said.

"In one world where everyone sacks everyone, for managers to keep doing the same job for a long time is so difficult. To be in a fifth season makes me so proud."
