<p>Dr Matti Marklund, a senior research fellow at the George Institute, in a conversation with Guardian over email said, “While we cannot for certain say what specific fishes had the greatest effect on CKD risk, we know that the blood levels of the fatty acids reflect their intake well."<br />

“Among the richest dietary sources of these fatty acids are fatty cold-water fish – for example, salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herrings – and to a less extent shellfish, like oysters, mussels, and crab," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Current dietary recommendations in most countries suggest at least two servings of fish per week, preferably oily fish, which will provide about 250mg/day of long-chain omega 3s,” said Marklund.</p>

<p>Up until recently, evidence from human research was limited and mostly came from dietary questionnaires. However, the latest research combined the findings of 19 studies from 12 nations and looked at connections between omega 3 fatty acid concentrations and the onset of CKD in adults. The primary analysis comprised about 25,000 individuals, ranging in age from 49 to 77.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When factors including age, sex, race, body mass index, smoking, drinking, physical activity, heart disease, and diabetes were included, higher amounts of seafood omega 3 fatty acids were associated with an 8% lower risk of developing CKD.</p>

<p>Participants were divided into five groups based on how much seafood omega-3 fatty acids they consumed, and those in the highest group had a 13% reduced chance of developing CKD than those in the lowest group. The researchers emphasised that since their results were observational, they could not conclusively show that increasing your intake of seafood reduces your chance of developing chronic kidney disease.</p>

<p>“The extent to which PFAS has contaminated fish is staggering,” said first author Nadia Barbo, a graduate student at Duke University, in a statement, Local Today reported. “There should be a single health-protecting fish consumption recommendation for freshwater fish nationwide.”</p>

<p>The data that researchers examined were collected from over 500 samples of fish filets in the U.S. between 2013 to 2015. &nbsp;The median level of total PFAS in fish filets was 9,500 nanograms per kilogramme, with a median level of 11,800 nanograms per kilogramme in the Great Lakes, Eurekalert reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>PFAS is believed to have penetrated local waterways that impact drinking water supplies and contaminate the irrigated plants and fish found living there. Fish consumption has long been associated with exposing eaters to PFAS, as per the study. In 1979, for the first time, researchers identified such contamination in catfish inhabiting the Tennessee River.</p>

<p>“Food has always been a kind of hypothesis for how most people are exposed to PFAS compounds,” The Hill quoted author David Andrews, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, as saying.</p>

<p>The study by Environmental Working Group scientists suggests the quantity of PFAS in freshwater on an average across the US was 280 times higher than forever chemicals found in commercially caught fish.</p>

<p>“People who consume freshwater fish, especially those who catch and eat fish regularly, are at risk of alarming levels of PFAS in their bodies,” one of the study’s lead authors Andrews said. “Growing up, I went fishing every week and ate those fish. But now when I see fish, all I think about is PFAS contamination.”</p>

<p>Repetitive exposure to these chemicals not only weakens the immune system but results in severe health issues like cancer. These toxic substances don’t easily degrade in nature or inside the human body and therefore,&nbsp;Andrews urged for more rigorous regulation to discontinue non-essential uses of PFAS.</p>

<p>On Friday, European countries, including Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands jointly submitted to the EU's European Chemicals Agency a proposal to ban PFAS, France 24 reported.</p>

<p>There are claims that freezing temperatures had contributed to the leak, but police spokesman Martin Stralau the cause of the incident was still being investigated, reports AP news agency.</p>

<p>Berlin police on Twitter said, “In addition to the unbelievable maritime damage... two people were injured by glass splinters.”</p>

<p>Berlin's public transport office said on Twitter that the nearby Karl-Liebknecht street has been partially closed off because there is "an extreme amount of water on the road".</p>

<p>Police said that buses were dispatched to the complex to provide shelter for people leaving the hotel as outside temperatures in Berlin were around minus 7 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>According to the operators, the aquarium has the biggest cylindrical tank in the world. It was last modernized in 2020 and is a major tourist magnet in Berlin.</p>

<p>One of the major highlights of the attraction was the 10-minute elevator ride through the tank.</p>

<p>In the report, a team of researchers who are affiliated with several institutions in Portugal released details of this extremely large ocean sunfish. The researchers worked with a colleague from New Zealand and another from Japan. They probed why the fish might have died.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Initially, it was identified as a southern or bump-head sunfish. Later, the Atlantic Naturalist Association was alerted by the fishermen to study the details.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study was led by marine scientist Jose Nuno Gomes-Pereira in association with the ocean conservation and research nonprofit Atlantic Naturalist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a positive step for animal welfare, one of the world's leading organisations for farmed seafood, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has accepted that fish too feel "pain, stress and anxiety" and is set to introduce welfare rules for slaughter.</p>

<p>The organisation is currently consulting the public on a new draft of welfare standards, which will include more humane slaughter practices.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the ASC website, the consultation will run till October 31 and aims to "collect feedback on the practical impact and auditability of the suggested requirements from producers, primary processors, and auditors as well as to understand stakeholders’ opinion on the entire proposal."</p>

<p>The current fishing standards, as per the Guardian, allow for slaughter methods like asphyxia and evisceration or disembowelment. However, the new standards propose making "stunning compulsory by introducing it in a phased approach to account for current practices for different species."</p>

<p>According to the newspaper, the proposed standards will help improve labelling for consumers on the welfare standards of farmed fish globally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The proposal comes after years of debate among scientists over a fish's ability for sensory experiences.</p>

<p>While the current proposal is only for finned fish, it can reportedly later be extended to include crabs, lobsters, shrimps and other marine life.</p>

<p>Following this proposal for farmed fish, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) which is the leading organisation for wild fishery certification is also facing calls to introduce its own slaughter standards for fishing of wild game.</p>

<p>With the lack of any set standards, currently wild fish generally die of asphyxiation on ship decks or are disembowelled even before they die.</p>

<p>“We share the grief of the faculty, staff and students who worked to care for, study and conserve these animals,” the university said</p>

<p>“The people who conduct and support the research at this facility are conservationists, ecologists and veterinarians whose life work is devoted to understanding and supporting these species. We recognise that this loss is particularly devastating to our community,” it added.</p>

<p>A mysterious sea creature has left the internet baffled after it was found lying ashore on a beach by morning walkers in Ireland.</p>

<p>The long, thin, grey animal was found by a man who then posted a picture of it on Reddit. Many are calling it a ‘forbidden churro', referring to the long, deep-fried cinnamon snack which looks a bit like the creature's elongated and ridged body, The Mirror reported.</p>

<p>"Can anyone help me identify this sea creature? Just found it washed up on a beach in Ireland," the man said.</p>

<p>And the responses were anything but helpful as they ranged from serious to absolutely insane, with one user joking that it's a "forbidden churro".</p>

<p>While another suggested it may be a "Goa'uld", a race of sentient parasitic beings from the sci-fi series Stargate SG-1.</p>

<p>Another Redditor called it the “jörmungadr”, a sea serpent in the Norse mythology popularised by the ‘God of War' franchise.</p>

<p>However, there was one user, who after much research and internet scrolling, revealed the identity of the aquatic beast.</p>

<p>"I think it might be a greater pipefish (Syngnathus acus)," a person wrote.</p>

<p>To which the person who found it replied, "You're right! Just looked that up and it looks identical. Thanks for your help. I don't know much about marine biology and really appreciate it."</p>

<p>Pipefish are a subfamily of small fish which are closely related to both seahorses and seadragons.</p>

<p>Pipefishes are very slender, long-bodied fishes that are covered with rings of bony armour. They have long tubular snouts and small mouths, a single dorsal fin, and usually a small tail fin.</p>

<p>Depending on the species, they may range in length from about 2 to 65 cm (1 to 26 inches).</p>

<p>They are often found along the western coast of Britain and Ireland.</p>

<p>A rare species of deep-sea dragonfish was recently discovered nearly 1,000 feet below the ocean surface, called the twilight zone, off the coast of northern&nbsp;California.</p>

<p>The discovery of the elusive creature has caused excitement among the scientists who say that this particular dragonfish is incredibly special.</p>

<p>"In more than three decades of deep-sea research and more than 27,600 hours of video, we've only seen this particular species four times!" the post by Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) reads in Twitter.</p>

<p>The video shows the highfin dragonfish, also known as Bathophilus flemingi, swimming in the deep sea.</p>

<p>The drangon fish, with its bronze metallic hue, appears like a torpedo failing through the air, the clip shows.</p>

<p>Named after the mythical creature, the torpedo-shaped fish is a predator that roams the depths of the ocean, according to reports.</p>

<p>The fish can grow up to 16.5cm in length and has long thin rays for fins. Scientists claim that the wing-like filaments can detect vibrations and can alert the fish of oncoming predators and prey.</p>

<p>The dragonfish uses a sit-and-wait tactic in which it hangs motionless in midwater and waits for unsuspecting crustaceans and fish to feed on, according to MBARI.</p>

<p>When the colony of Tequila fish grew to have 40 pairs in lab, scientists introduced them to an artificial pond for their 'training'. Here, the fish were subjected naturally to factors they did not encounter in the lab. The fish flourished in the artificial pond and the numbers increased to 10,000. This indicated that they were coping well to conditions.</p>

<p>It was then the scientists decided to reintroduce the fish in the wild.</p>

<p>“At first, I thought it was a like a jellyfish or something, and then I went and looked at it a little more carefully, and some other people were gathered around it too, and then I saw that it was this very unusual fish. It’s the stuff of nightmares mouth almost looked bloody,”</p>

<p>Scientifically known as Himantolophidae, footballfish lives in waters that are 3,000-4,000 feet deep. The creature is mostly found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.</p>
