WION interviewed Guy Danon, a survivor of the Israeli Desert Rave attack. He shared that the entire incident took place merely 3-4 kilometres away from the border and fence itself, with more than 3,000 people at music festival venue.

Guy is an electrical engineer who went to celebrate his 27th birthday with his friends.

The attack began in the early hours of October 7, with scores of militants descending on the rave grounds in a well-organised attack, with heavy ammunition and AK47s, firing away and capturing the rave-goers.

"Even when we went there, we heard of a terrorist breach. I thought it would be 3 or 4, maybe what? 10? But there were THOUSANDS. It was clear that it was very well-organised," he said. The videos and images of the attack do not do justice at all to the chaos that ensued, he added.

There were police at the party but they did not seem to be armed, and they were not as armed well enough to deal with the attack. "No one thought at all that this could happen. They're truly monsters," he added.

Since the Shahji temple in Vrindavan also celebrates all the festivals in accordance with the traditions followed at the Radha Raman temple, there too, Janmashtami was celebrated in the morning, the priest of the temple, said.

At the Srikrishna Janmabhumi, the day started with the blowing of shehnai and the sound of conch and drum beats, followed by the "abhishek" of the deity and the distribution of the "charnamrit" among the devotees.

As part of the celebrations, "Govindas" or Dahi Handi participants form multi-tiered human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd suspended in the air.

"At least 35 Govindas have suffered injuries during the Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai. Four of them have been admitted to hospitals -- two each in the civic-run KEM Hospital at Parel in central Mumbai and the Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar," an official said.

Janmashtami celebrations in Delhi's Dwarka incorporated "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" -- the theme of the upcoming G20 summit in the national capital. Union Minister Smriti Irani and BJP general secretary BL Santhosh attended the celebrations.

City officials in Toronto were forced to cancel a weekend of Eritrean cultural celebrations after outbreaks of violence and demonstrations by opponents of the Eritrean government.

Clashes between attendees and protesters left nine people hospitalised and brought attention to human rights abuses in Eritrea and tensions within diaspora communities, reported the Guardian.

Global skirmishes and human rights concerns

The violence in Toronto mirrors similar confrontations in Sweden, where over 50 people were injured, and in Seattle, where Eritrean protesters opposed cultural events they believe support one of the world's most repressive regimes.

In the days leading up to the Festival Eritrea Toronto, the organisers sought protection from Toronto police to ensure a "festive and peaceful" event. However, tensions escalated as protesters began tearing down tents and confronting attendees.

Following the escalating violence and safety concerns, city officials made the difficult decision to revoke permits for the Festival Eritrea Toronto, prioritising public safety.

Community groups expressed "deep concern and distress" over the clashes and highlighted the event organisers' alleged ties to the Eritrean government, triggering traumatic experiences for those who fled oppression in their homeland.

Toronto mayor Olivia Chow condemned the violence as "unacceptable," emphasising the city's commitment to peaceful cultural celebrations.

The festival, which had previously taken place without incident, came under scrutiny as critics accused it of being a propaganda tool to raise funds for Eritrea's pariah government.

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration honouring the African American and Pan-African culture and traditions with a seven-night festival which begins on December 26 and goes on till January 1. The festival began in the United States in 1966 and is still predominantly celebrated in the country in millions of homes and communities.

Origins of Kwanzaa

The term Kwanzaa (pronounced as “kwahn-zuh”) comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits”. In 1966, Dr Maulana Karenga, professor and chair of the department of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach created the holiday which has links to harvest festivals in Africa and communities across the world.

The secular holiday does not associate with any particular religion and was created in the wake of the 1964 Watts Riots in Los Angeles, California, during the Black Freedom Movement in the US. According to National Geographic, Karenga drew inspiration from the African harvest festival “in which communities came together to celebrate the fruits of their collective labor.”

Why is it celebrated?

“African American celebration that highlights the culture of the entire African diaspora and gives the community a chance to come together to reflect upon important values,” said Kelly Navies, a museum specialist and oral historian at the National Museum of African American History and Culture told USA Today. She added that since there is no particular religion associated with the holiday it allows “to unify people” rather than divide them based on their religious beliefs.

Seven principles of Kwanzaa

Each day of the celebration is dedicated to reflecting on one of the seven communitarian principles known as the “Nguzo Saba”. The seven principles are, Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

What are the seven symbols of Kwanzaa?

According to the festival’s official website, there are seven basic symbols and two supplemental ones, each of which, “represents values and concepts reflective of African culture and contributive to community building and reinforcement”.

Beginning with the “Mazao” which means crops and includes things like fruits and vegetables to represent the “rewards of productive and collective labour.” This also includes “Muhindi” (meaning corn) which is a symbol for “our children and our future which they embody.”

These items are arranged on a “Mkeka” (the mat) along with the “Kinara” (the candle holder) which has the “Mishumaa Saba” (the seven candles) which are symbolic of the seven principles, and the “Kikombe cha Umoja” (the unity cup).

How is Kwanzaa celebrated?

The official colours of Kwanzaa are black, red, and green which represent, “black for the people, red for their struggle, and green for the future that comes from their struggle,” said the festival’s website. On each day the family comes together to light one of the seven candles and discuss the principle of the day. The lighting of the candles begins with the black candle which is placed in the middle of Kinara, on the first day.

In the following days, those on the left are lit following the order from left to right each day, the order indicates that the people come first, then the struggle, and the hope from that struggle. On the final day of the festival, there is a feast known as karamu, where the children also receive “Zawadi” which means gifts.

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration honouring the African American and Pan-African culture and traditions with a seven-night festival which begins on December 26 and goes on till January 1. The festival began in the United States in 1966 and is still predominantly celebrated in the country in millions of homes and communities. Origins of Kwanzaa The term Kwanzaa (pronounced as “kwahn-zuh”) comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits”. According to National Geographic, Karenga drew inspiration from the African harvest festival “in which communities came together to celebrate the fruits of their collective labor.” Why is it celebrated? “African American celebration that highlights the culture of the entire African diaspora and gives the community a chance to come together to reflect upon important values,” said Kelly Navies, a museum specialist and oral historian at the National Museum of African American History and Culture told USA Today. She added that since there is no particular religion associated with the holiday it allows “to unify people” rather than divide them based on their religious beliefs. Seven principles of Kwanzaa Each day of the celebration is dedicated to reflecting on one of the seven communitarian principles known as the “Nguzo Saba”. The seven principles are, Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
