The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition is living up to expectations. While the group stage saw plenty of upsets, the games are now going down to the wire in the knockouts. With the Round of 16 getting over, teams such as the Netherlands, Argentina, Morocco, Portugal, France, England, Brazil and Croatia have booked a place in the top eight, which will commence on December 09. While any two teams, from the top eight, can feature in the final showdown, here's how Argentina vs Portugal is a possibility in the summit clash which will be a mouth-watering affair with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo up against each other:

How can Argentina and Portugal lock horns in the FINAL?

It is to be noted that Argentina is set to meet the 2010 runners-up Netherlands in the quarters, on December 13. If they beat the Dutch line-up, Argentina will face the winner of the Brazil vs Croatia quarter-final clash, which is set to take place on December 09, in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Portugal will face either France or England in the last four if they manage to get past high-flying Morocco in the quarters, on December 10. Thus, Argentina and Portugal won't meet each other in the semis but have a realistic chance to square off in the summit clash, which will surely send football fans into a frenzy.

Of course, anything can happen in this FIFA WC -- which has already seen some surprising results -- but there is a solid chance for Argentina and Portugal to meet in the finale. For that, they will need to be at their very best to get past the upcoming two rounds. As of now, Argentina has had a topsy-turvy ride. They lost their opener to Saudi Arabia before beating the likes of Mexico and Poland to reach the Round of 16 where they defeated Australia. The Ronaldo-starrer Portugal, on the other hand, defeated Ghana and Uruguay before going down to South Korea in the group stage but defeated Switzerland to reach the quarters.

Overall, a riveting end is surely on cards in the ongoing Qatar World Cup.

FIFA WC: EXPLAINED! How Messi's Argentina & Ronaldo-led Portugal can square off in final showdown

The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition, in Qatar, has lived up to expectations so far. While the group stages saw plenty of upsets, the stage is now set for the last eight round with more action and drama along the way. Several things, both on and off the field, have made heads turn during the Qatar World Cup. During the group stage match between South Korea and Portugal, the Asian side's star footballer Hwang Hee Chan's pictures made heads turn, in what seemed like he was wearing a women's sports bra.

The regular football fans and viewers won't be surprised with players sporting such an attire. However, non-regular fans might be perplexed by what they saw Hee Chan wearing. Here's everything you need to know about such an attire commonly worn by footballers across the globe:

The vest, appearing as a sports bra, is actually regarded as a GPS tracker vest. It is worn beneath jerseys and the vest comprises a GPS device connected to it, useful for collecting individual player GPS data. Such a device is placed in a small pouch at the backside of the GPS tracker vest.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Are players wearing sports bra? All you need to know

In a run-feast in Rawalpindi, England beat Pakistan by 74 runs to win the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. On Day 5, all three results were possible but Ben Stokes & Co. were rewarded for their brave and attacking approach as they beat Babar Azam & Co. in the riveting final moments of the contest.

Opting to bat first, England rode on centuries from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, OIlie Pope and Harry Brooks to be dismissed for 657 (in 101 overs) in their first innings. In reply, Pakistan also made a mammoth 579, courtesy of hundreds from Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique and Babar, but gave a vital 78-run lead to the visitors who smashed 264/7 in 35.5 overs and declared; setting up a challenging 343-run target.

On the final day, Pakistan were 259 for 5 are seemed like cruising towards the total before James Anderson-Ollie Robinson's four wickets each and Jack Leach chipped in with the last wicket to take their side home; dismissing Pakistan for 268. With this defeat, Pakistan have dented their chances of qualifying for the second ICC World Test Championship final.

Here's how Pakistan's loss is India's gain

Babar & Co. aren't out of contention yet. They are placed fifth in the table, however, wins for Australia or India in their respective upcoming Test series will end Pakistan's chances of entering the final.

On the other hand, if Rohit Sharma's India clean sweep Bangladesh, they can now afford to lose at least one of their upcoming four Tests versus Pat Cummins-led Australia at home, early next year, in a bid to qualify. For Australia, if they whitewash West Indies on home soil and beat South Africa in two out of the upcoming three Tests, Down Under, they would also make it to the summit clash.

After the loss, Babar said at the post-match presentation, "We were not upto the mark. Had a golden chance in the second innings, but session by session we lost wickets. Our bowling group is young. Unfortunately Haris injured himself in the first innings. All credit to the bowlers who bowled well and tried without Haris. We try to stick to our plans. Difficult when opponent goes at 7 an over. We had an opportunity in the second innings. But we didn't get partnerships in the end. Lot of positives. Our batting performed very well. Bowling also very well."

Pakistan will also host New Zealand after the England series. However, they have spoiled their chances of going ahead with a loss in the England series opener.

As hundreds of people on TikTok and Twitter urge to #cancelBalenciaga, the high-end fashion house has issued an apology for its contentious holiday ad campaign that featured kids carrying fetish-adorned purses and teddy bears. A comment about the giving and receiving of gifts was the goal of the Gift Shop campaign, which was shot by famous photographer Gabriele Galimberti and was motivated by Galimberti's own "toy tale" photographic series. However, the portrayal of young children holding bears while wearing bondage-style clothing, such as fishnets, cuffs, and harnesses, infuriated online users. We explain the case in-depth.

Balenciaga's apology

"We sincerely apologise for any offence our Holiday campaign may have caused," Balenciaga said in a statement.

"Our plush bear bags should not have been featured with children in this campaign. We have immediately removed the campaign from all platforms."

Kim Kardashian, one of Balenciaga's most outspoken supporters, has also expressed her disapproval of the company, saying she was "shocked and outraged."

"I have been quiet for the past few days, not because I haven't been shocked and outraged by the recent Balenciaga campaigns, but because I wanted an opportunity to speak to their team to understand for myself how this could have happened," she wrote in an Instagram story.

"As a mother of four, I have been shaken by those disturbing images. The safety of children must be held with the highest regard and anything against it should have no place in our society - period," she added.

"I appreciate Balenciaga's removal of the campaigns and apology. In speaking with them, I believe they understand the seriousness of the issue and will take the necessary measures for this to never happen again."

Backstory

The hashtag #cancelbalenciaga has received over 105k views on TikTok alone, with the majority of them being credited to video producers who explained why the holiday promotion is so abhorrent.

Balenciaga has recently gained a reputation for its unconventional fashion campaigns, whether it was due to the editorial-style advertisement's location or the brand's imaginative casting. This strategy, which they have used successfully thus far, is reflected in their store designs, runway presentations, and even the product line they offer. According to fashion aggregator and trend forecaster Lyst, Balenciaga has been one of the top 5 hottest fashion brands in the world for four years running. Their innovative approach to fashion has elevated the brand to a sought-after position never before achieved.

But this Gift Shop campaign was always going to stir up the wrong kind of outrage; anything that even remotely suggests sexualizing minors.

Ahead of the Christmas season, a new collection of giftable items, including Champagne glasses, pet bowls with jewels, and teddy bears, was introduced, and to support it, a campaign was started earlier this month. In order to "iterate on the artist's series 'Toy Stories,' an investigation of what individuals acquire and receive as gifts," Balenciaga hired photojournalist Gabriel Galimberti to photograph the campaign.

A supreme court document about child porn in balenciaga's campaign?

Not really. First off, the disputed document isn't even mentioned in the campaign. Actually, it's from a previous Balenciaga campaign from the company's partnership with Adidas.

However, a report on child pornography was included in the Adidas advertisement.

It's specifically from a Supreme Court decision from 2008 that upheld fines for child abuse and other types of sexual exploitation - not exactly the slam dunk TikTok and Twitter users are saying it is, but odd none the less.

In a statement, Balenciaga said they had not approved the paper and were taking legal action as a result.

"We apologise for displaying unsettling documents in our campaign," the brand said in a separate Instagram story.

"We take this matter very seriously and are taking legal action against the parties responsible for creating the set and including unapproved items for our Spring 2023 campaign photoshoot. We strongly condemn abuse of children in any form. We stand for children safety and well-being."

Did balenciaga actually remove their social media as a result of the controversy?

Balenciaga controversial campaign: Why is the luxury brand causing such a stir?

At the COP27 climate conference early on Sunday (November 20), nations signed a contentious final deal that establishes a fund to aid impoverished nations suffering from climate catastrophes but does not step up efforts to reduce the emissions that cause them. After difficult talks that lasted all night, the Egyptian COP27 chair made the final language of the agreement public and convened a plenary meeting to swiftly approve it.

Final declaration and historic agreement on "loss and damage" from climate change are the two primary texts adopted by the delegates.

Here are the key takeaways from the two papers, which outline promises on greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, and energy as well as funds to assist developing nations in coping with the terrible effects of climate change.

Final declaration

Reductions in emissions

COP27 "emphasises the urgent need for immediate, deep, quick and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions," which contribute to global warming.

Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN, lamented a failure to "dramatically decrease emissions today."

Warming objectives

The final statement reiterates the Paris Agreement's temperature target of keeping the rise in the world's average temperature to well below two degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels and pushing initiatives to keep it to 1.5C.

Resolving to continue efforts to keep the temperature increase to 1.5C, it also "reiterates that the repercussions of climate change will be significantly lesser at the temperature increase of 1.5C compared with 2C."

Energy

Parties are urged by COP27 to "accelerate...efforts towards the phase-out of wasteful fossil fuel subsidies and the phase-down of unabated coal power."

Instead of only mentioning subsidies, some nations attempted to discuss lowering the usage of oil and natural gas.

Emissions from coal-fired power plants that are "unabated" are those that are not syphoned off to keep them from entering the atmosphere.

Additionally, the document asks for quickening "fair and sustainable transitions to renewable energy."

Loss and damage

Parties "decide to establish new finance arrangements for aiding developing countries in responding to loss and damage, including by giving and assisting in mobilising new and additional resources."

Additionally, they "decide to establish a fund for addressing loss and damage."

The rules for the new financial arrangements will be laid down by "a transitory committee," and the "sources of money" will be determined.

The committee's suggestions would be made available "for deliberation and adoption" at the COP28 conference in Dubai the following year.

How is the world reacting?

The "loss and damage" fund established at the climate summit in Egypt, to aid vulnerable nations in coping with the devastating effects of climate change garnered praise but there was also resentment about the inability to continue to fight for emission reductions in order to maintain the aspirational target of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.

COP27: Major takeaways from the UN climate summit; reactions from global leaders

India, New Zealand, Pakistan and England made it to the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals. Pakistan convincingly beat Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the first semi-final, by seven wickets in SCG, Sydney, whereas England thrashed Rohit Sharma's Team India by ten wickets, in Adelaide. Thus, the two victorious teams will lock horns in the summit clash of the mega event on Sunday (November 13).

The mega finale will be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne and the match is expected to go down to the wire. England and Pakistan had met recently, in Pakistan, for a seven-match T20I series where Jos Buttler-less Three Lions won 4-3. It will be interesting to see which side emerges on top this time around and joins West Indies to become the second team to win the T20 WC title twice.

EXPLAINED: What happens if rain washes out T20 WC final?

As plenty of matches have been impacted by rain in the ongoing T20 WC in Australia, there are high chances of weather playing spoilsport at the MCG for the finale as well. If rain hampers the proceedings with no play possible on Sunday, then the match will be held the next day; i.e. on Monday (November 14). However, if rain leads to no play in the reserve day as well, then Pakistan and England will be declared joint winners.

ICC rules and play extension

As per the tournament rules, the finale must have at least ten overs to be bowled by each team in order to reach a conclusion and adjudge a winner. In addition, there is 30 minutes of extra time on cards for the summit clash to be concluded on Sunday. Moreover, the finalists will also get an additional two hours of extra time on the reserve day for the match's completion.

WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID

After Pakistan's win over NZ, skipper Babar Azam said in the post-match presentation, "Thanks to the crowd. We feel like we're playing at home. Got a good start with the first 6 overs with the ball. Later on the ball didn't come on well. Fast bowlers finished well. We planned before going that we'll utilise the powerplay. He's a young guy and showing his aggression (Haris). He's playing very well. We're going to enjoy this moment. But at the same time have focus on the final."

Following a big win in the second semi-final, England's captain Buttler stated, "I think the character we have shown since then (England's loss against Ireland) - it has been amazing. We came here very excited, there was a very good feeling. Everyone from 1 to 11 - stood up today. We always want to start fast and aggressively. Rashid was batting at 11, that's incredible to know that we have such depth. Hales used the dimensions well and he has shown his form. He was brilliant today. It's important to enjoy this, it was a brilliant performance from us. I think we need to give special credit to Jordan, to bowl 3 overs at the death coming into the semi-final, it was a tough job. He handled the pressure towards the end pretty well, especially bowling against a world-class player like Hardik Pandya."

T20 WC 2022: EXPLAINED! What is the reserve day scenario for NZ vs Pak, India-ENG semifinals & final

India and Bangladesh squared off in a rain-affected T20 World Cup 2022 encounter at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. In what was a crucial Super 12 clash, Team India beat a spirited Bangla Tigers by five runs (DLS method) to win their third game of the mega event in Australia and top their group, with one more game to play. Despite Rohit Sharma & Co.'s third win of the showpiece event Down Under, the one-time winners have still not qualified for the semi-finals.

The race for the semi-finals continues to remain intense and it is getting a bit more complicated in both the groups. Talking about the qualification scenario in Group 2, India sit at the top spot after their win over Bangladesh, with six points under their belt. South Africa and Bangladesh follow suit with Pakistan and Netherlands occupying the bottom-two spots, respectively. Here's the qualification scenario for all the teams still alive in the race for the semis from Group 2:

With Netherlands and Zimbabwe out of contention, let us dwell upon the chances of India, South Africa, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Bangladesh: The Bangla Tigers have one game left. They play Pakistan in their remaining league stage encounter at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. If they win by an improbable margin, they can even challenge India, in terms of NRR, in the top two. South Africa's NRR at present is +2.772 which is certainly out of reach for Shakib Al Hasan & Co.

Pakistan: The Babar Azam-led Men in Green won against South Africa on Thursday (November 03) and will play Bangladesh in their last league stage face-off and have to beat their Asian neighbours. If Pakistan reach six points and India lose to Zimbabwe, they can even edge past their arch-rivals as their NRR is slightly better than India.

South Africa: Temba Bavuma & Co. are in a very good position; and were unbeaten in the tournament till losing to Pakistan. With two wins and one no-result, the Proteas have five points. Even if they lose one of their remaining two games, SA should go ahead but their final positioning can change.

India: Rohit & Co. currently occupy the top spot in Group 2. The Men in Blue are also in a good position to reach the top four, however, they still need to win their last league stage encounter versus Zimbabwe. A win will confirm them a place in the knockouts.

According to data released by Palestinian human rights organizations, as of May 2022, there were allegedly 4,700 Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. Out of these, 32 women and 170 children are held in Israel Prison Service facilities. 640 are treated as administrative detainees. Let's take a deeper look at the Palestinian prisoner situation.

The rain had the final say in the doubleheaders at the Men's T20 World Cup on Friday (October 28). After the Ireland-Afghanistan clash was washed out due to rain, in Group A, the Australia-England face-off also met with the same fate.

The T20 WC has lived up to expectations so far. However, rain has forced many games to be washed out in the main draw of the competition. Earlier in Group A, the New Zealand-Afghanistan match was also abandoned without a ball being bowled. Friday's doubleheaders, at the MCG, Melbourne, didn't even see the coin toss taking place.

Following a no-show on Friday, Group A continues to be wide open. At present, New Zealand occupies the top spot whereas England, Ireland, and Australia follow suit with an equal number of points (three each). Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are at the bottom slots, respectively, with two points apiece. Here's how England, and Australia can enter the semi-finals despite rain forcing their face-off to be washed out in Melbourne:

While NZ is at the top at the moment, SL have a realistic chance of progressing ahead, Ireland can make the top four only if they win the remainder of the games whereas Afghanistan is almost out. For England and Australia, the 2010 winners need to win both their remaining games as their NRR is a saving grace as of now (+0.239 ). For the hosts and defending champions to qualify, they have to win big versus both Ireland and Afghanistan. While that is possible by all means, Australia will qualify straightaway if England, Ireland and Sri Lanka lose one more clash. SL is their biggest threat currently, assuming NZ are strong contenders to top the group, which has one more game to play than the two European nations.

Even if Australia can better their NRR as compared to England and Ireland, they will hope and pray for the Lankans to concede at least one game (out of the three).

Here's how England, and Australia can enter the semi-finals despite rain forcing their face-off to be washed out in Melbourne: While NZ is at the top at the moment, SL have a realistic chance of progressing ahead, Ireland can make the top four only if they win the remainder of the games whereas Afghanistan is almost out. T20 WC 2022: EXPLAINED! How AUS & ENG can reach knockouts after rain forces them to share points

Zimbabwe stunned 2009 winners Pakistan as they defeated the Babar Azam-led Men in Green by one run in a thrilling low-scoring tie, at the Perth Stadium, Perth, in the Men's T20 World Cup Super 12 clash on Thursday (October 28).

Opting to bat first, Craig Ervine-led African side only managed 130 for 8 as Mohammad Wasim Jr returning with 4 for 24. In reply, Pakistan slipped from a winning position, being well-placed at 88 for 3, before being restricted to 129 for 8 in 20 overs. Sikandar Raza shined with the ball, returning with 3 for 25 along with Brad Evans also chipping in with 2 for 25.

After this loss, Babar-led Pakistan are at a precarious position. With twin defeats, having also lost to India in their Super 12 opener, the Asian giants are on the verge of an early exit. Here's how Pakistan can still make it to the semi-finals despite a shocking result versus Zimbabwe:

1) Firstly, Pakistan have to win all their remaining matches -- against the Netherlands, South Africa, and Bangladesh -- handsomely to remain alive.

2) Apart from their wins, Pakistan will hope for at least three other teams in Group B to lose as many as two games.

3) At this point, Pakistan's biggest nemesis is South Africa. The Temba Bavuma-led side could've had four points at present, instead of three, had their Zimbabwe game not ended without a result. So, if India beat South Africa on Sunday (October 30) and Pakistan also triumphs over them in their upcoming face-off, then Pakistan can proceed ahead with six points. SA will end up with five points if they beat the Netherlands.

4) Not only the Proteas, even Zimbabwe have a chance to go ahead. Hence, Pakistan will also have to hope that the lowly-ranked side loses two of their remaining three games, if not all, for them to qualify with six points.

5) At present, Bangladesh is in the hunt. They are yet to face Zimbabwe, India, and Pakistan. If the Bangla Tigers lose against India and Pakistan but go onto win against Zimbabwe, it will be advantage.

It is to be noted that even the Netherlands are not ruled out yet. They are yet to get off the mark in the main round, along with Pakistan, and face the Men in Green next. The loser of that clash will definitely bow out of the showpiece event.

At the post-match presentation, Babar said, "We would have taken 130 at the halfway stage. Very disappointing performance, we are not up to the mark in batting. We have good batters but both openers got out in the powerplay. When Shadab and Shan were building partnership, unfortunately Shadab got out and then back-to-back wickets that pushed us into pressure situation. First 6 overs, we haven't used the new ball well but we finished well with the ball. We will sit out, discuss our mistakes and we will train hard and come back strong in our next game."

EXPLAINED: How Pakistan can still enter T20 WC semi-finals after shocking result vs Zimbabwe

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition's qualifying round has seen plenty of drama and action. On Thursday (October 20), Sri Lanka defeated the Netherlands by 16 runs to enter the Super 12 round whereas Namibia's loss to the UAE in their last face-off resulted in the Dutch line-up also progressing ahead, into the main draw of the competition. While Sri Lanka joins Pool A, the Netherlands will now be a part of Team India-starrer Pool B.

Two more teams will now join the main draw of the tournament on Friday (October 21). Group B, from the qualifiers, has become a congested one with all four teams -- West Indies, Zimbabwe, Scotland and Ireland -- tied with two points each. The equation is simple for all of them. The winner of the West Indies-Ireland tie and Scotland-Zimbabwe match will progress ahead; with the group toppers joining Pool B whereas the other will join Australia-starrer Pool A.

Here's the qualification scenario explained for Group B teams for Super 12

The winner of West Indies-Ireland and Scotland-Zimbabwe will make it to the Super 12 stage. In case both the games are washed out due to rain, with the forecast not looking encouraging in Geelong on Friday, current table-toppers Scotland and Zimbabwe will qualify. If the Zimbabwe-Scotland game is abandoned and the other match is completed, then the winner of West Indies-Ireland will enter Pool B whereas Scotland will proceed to Pool A in the Super 12.

On the other hand, if the Scotland-Zimbabwe game produces a winner and the other encounter is abandoned, then the former match's winner will end as group toppers and go through along with West Indies.

Hence, everything is at stake for all four teams in Group B. It is set to be a memorable end to the qualifiers, which has provided wholesome entertainment for spectators and viewers across the globe.

This is the season when the Indian state of West Bengal and the whole Bengali community around the globe go shopping, when the workers and clerks stage street demonstrations daily for Puja bonus, all the Puja specials are on sale and the people gear up for feast and festivity. It's Durga Puja time. But have you wondered about the economic aspect of the festival? Here's everything you need to know.

Explained | The economic aspect of Durga Puja

The United States economy shrank in the first half of this year, confirming concerns about a general downturn that might trigger a recession. At the same time, a measure that frequently indicates the rate of layoffs—the number of persons applying for unemployment benefits—fell to a five-month low. The decrease shows that businesses are keeping their employees despite the downturn in growth and that those who are let go swiftly find other employment.

The unemployment rate is close to a 50-year low, and hiring is still quite robust. Few experts believe that we are now in a recession because of the strength of the labour market. Economists anticipate the economy will grow as long as people continue to spend money, albeit slowly.

Recession is often defined as a six-month period of decline. But in a post-pandemic economy when growth is low but the employment market is robust, nothing is straightforward. Since growth abruptly came to an end in March 2020 when Covid-19 hit and 22 million Americans were suddenly out of work, the path of the economy has baffled officials at the Federal Reserve as well as many private economists.

Despite recent drops in gas prices and other expenses, inflation is still close to its highest point in four decades. Despite many workers receiving salary hikes, inflation is still so high that Americans' purchasing power is declining. Households with lower incomes, those who are Black and Hispanic, and those who are struggling to pay their bills are disproportionately feeling the burden.

Who decides?

The National Bureau of Economic Research, whose Business Cycle Dating Committee defines a recession as "a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months," is the organisation that formally declares recessions.

The committee uses job trends as a significant indicator for assessing recessions. Numerous other data points are also evaluated, such as measures of income, employment, inflation-adjusted expenditure, retail sales, and manufacturing production. It gives a lot of weight to employment and is an indicator of inflation-adjusted income that doesn't include government benefits like Social Security.

However, the NBER frequently waits until after a recession has started, sometimes for as long as a year.

Can a common man sense it?

Yes, as a large number of individuals currently feel more financially pressured. Higher costs have reduced Americans' purchasing power since most people's pay increases have lagged behind inflation.

According to Walmart, rising gas and food prices have made it necessary for its customers to cut down on discretionary purchases like new apparel. This is a glaring indication that consumer spending, the main engine of the economy, is waning. Walmart, the biggest retailer in the country, has lowered its profit forecast and said that it would have to discount more goods, including furniture and electronics.

Unemployment -- clear signal

According to analysts, a sustained increase in job losses and a spike in unemployment would be the most obvious signs that a recession is beginning. A recession has always occurred since World War II when the unemployment rate increased by a half percentage point over a period of many months, according to economist and former Fed employee Claudia Sahm.

Numerous analysts keep track of the number of people who apply for unemployment benefits each week because it shows if layoffs are becoming worse or not. The number of weekly applications for unemployment benefits has decreased to a five-month low, indicating that few firms are using layoffs as a last alternative in the face of a labour shortage.

Inverted yield curve

Many economists also keep an eye on fluctuations in the interest rates, or yields, on various bonds in search of the "inverted yield curve," a recession indicator. When the yield on a short-term Treasury, such as the 3-month T-bill, is lower than the yield on a 10-year Treasury, this occurs. That is strange. In return for locking up their money for a longer length of time, longer-term bonds often provide investors with a larger yield.

In general, inverted yield curves indicate that investors anticipate a downturn that will force the Fed to lower interest rates. Recessions frequently precede inverted curves. After the yield curve inverts, a slump may not occur for 18 to 24 months.

Interest rate

The economy's warning signs—slowing growth and high hiring—have presented a challenge for the Fed. Jerome Powell, the chair, wants a "soft landing, "In which inflation returns to the Fed's 2 per cent objective and the economy slows just enough to restrict wage growth and hiring without triggering a recession.

Powell has recognised, however, that it is getting harder to come to such a conclusion. He made it plain last week that the Fed will continue raising rates if necessary to control inflation, despite a deteriorating economy that may enter a recession.

Explained: Early signs of a recession; who decides if it's officially begun?

Team India dealt with a huge blow on Thursday (September 29) as Jasprit Bumrah is now out of action due to a back stress fracture and will miss the remainder of the home T20Is versus South Africa, As per a report in the PTI, the 28-year-old speedster is also set to miss the forthcoming T20 World Cup, in Australia, as his injury will take time to heal and the premier pacer might be away from the game for 4-6 months.

While BCCI is yet to share an official statement regarding Bumrah's chances of featuring in the T20 WC, in Australia from October-November, his back issues have re-emerged at a very poor time; less than a month before the mega event Down Under. It is to be noted that Bumrah missed the Asia Cup 2022 edition due to back issues as well.

In a chat with the Times of India, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala -- an ICC medical advisory committee doctor -- explained what is a back stress fracture.

What is a back stress fracture?

"Any pacer is prone to stress fractures in the low back and this typically happens on the side opposite to the bowling arm. In a normal fracture, a bone breaks because of an injury. However, a stress fracture happens because of repetitive micro-injury as small injuries build up over weeks or months," the doctor explained.

It seems that the BCCI is still hopeful of Bumrah's recovery and, hence, are eager to play the waiting game as they have not officially released a statement ruling out the pacer's chances of playing the T20 WC. On Friday (September 30), the board, however, announced that Mohammed Siraj has replaced injured Bumrah for the remainder of the SA T20Is at home.

The BCCI tweeted, "The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Mohd. Siraj as replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah for the remainder of the T20I series against South Africa. Bumrah has sustained a back injury and is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team."

Indian team management and the cricket loyalists across the nation will be desperate to see Bumrah in India's squad for the T20 WC in Australia. At present, the chances are slim and the picture remains unclear.

Can India still qualify for Asia Cup 2022 final? Here are all scenarios explained

The United Kingdom’s next prime minister, Liz Truss, takes power as a traditional, low-tax Conservative Eurosceptic promising to turbo-charge economic growth.

Her position is the polar opposite of how she started out, as the Liberal Democrat-supporting daughter from a family of progressives, who opposed the monarchy and Brexit.

Her self-styled lifelong political “journey” has prompted criticism that she lacks genuine conviction and prioritises power over ideology.

But her straight-talking style, calls for a smaller state and championing of free trade have proved popular with grassroots Conservatives.

Truss, 47, campaigned on a platform of slashing taxes and bulldozing bureaucratic “orthodoxy”, particularly in the finance ministry where she once worked.

“For a party that’s gone in a quite populist direction in recent years, she’s been able to present herself as more authentic, more ordinary,” said Tim Bale, of the Queen Mary University of London.

“She sets herself up as — despite having been in government for eight years — almost outside that establishment and therefore the kind of person that you can rely on to represent you against that so-called ‘blob’.”

Heir to Thatcher?

“She’s always been outspoken. She’s always been a disrupter,” said Mark Littlewood, head of the Institute of Economic Affairs think-tank and a former member of Oxford University’s Liberal Democrat club with Truss.

“You really need to understand Elizabeth Truss as a kind of free market liberal,” he told AFP.

Truss’s rise to become the UK’s third female prime minister has inevitably led to comparisons with the first: Margaret Thatcher.

As foreign secretary for the past year, Truss has been pictured riding atop a tank and sporting a Russian fur hat in Moscow, just like the Tory icon.

But she has batted away any suggestion of a deliberate visual ploy.

Yet like the “Iron Lady”, she is faced with the daunting task of leading the UK out of decades-high inflation, a worsening cost-of-living crisis and industrial action.

Financial Times political commentator Robert Shrimsley believes Truss is the heir not to Thatcher but to Boris Johnson’s “cakeism” doctrine — being “pro having cake and pro eating it”.

She was, he wrote, the choice of a Conservative party that “dislikes hard choices” in contrast to her beaten rival, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, who campaigned for fiscal discipline.

‘Human hand grenade’

As foreign secretary, Truss spearheaded a raft of trade deals following the UK’s divorce from the European Union.

Truss has branded her initial opposition to Brexit a mistake, despite growing evidence of its economic costs, and has repositioned herself as a champion of the cause.

Issues around new trade arrangements in Northern Ireland are causing friction with Washington and Brussels and could prove problematic early in her tenure.

On the international stage, she has also forcefully confronted Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

But her initial encouragement of Britons to fight there was slapped down by the military establishment and fuelled criticism that she lacks judgement.

Johnson’s former top aide Dominic Cummings likens her to a “human hand grenade”, and some MPs have accused her of excessive self-promotion.

Truss admits to not being the “slickest presenter”. She is still mocked online for a bizarre speech she gave as environment minister in 2014, offering impassioned support for British cheese and pork.

Liberal Democrat to Tory

Truss grew up first in Scotland and then in an affluent suburb of Leeds, northern England.

Her mother was a nurse, teacher, and campaigner for nuclear disarmament who took her on protests, and her father was a left-wing maths professor.

Some characterised her former Department for International Trade as the “Department for Instagramming Truss” because of her prolific output on social media.

During the Tory leadership campaign, Truss criticised her Leeds school for fostering “low expectations”.

That prompted a backlash from teachers, contemporaries, and locals who accuse her of inventing an “insulting” backstory to curry favour with the Tory right.

Despite the school’s supposed failings, she went on to Oxford, where — like Sunak — she graduated in philosophy, politics, and economics.

At Oxford, she was president of the university’s Liberal Democrat branch. At the party’s national conference in 1994, she gave a speech calling for the abolition of the monarchy.

“I was a bit of a teenage controversialist,” Truss admitted during campaigning.

By her own admission, her switch to the Conservatives shocked her parents, but she says her beliefs had evolved.

A recent Times profile said her parents have been dismayed as she rose through the Tory ranks and left unable to discuss their daughter with others.

Explained: The political journey of Liz Truss to 10 Downing Street

This Sunday, 28 August, the Supertech twin towers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh will be reduced to dust and rubble in about 15 seconds with the use of 3,700 kg of explosives. These skyscrapers, which are taller than Qutub Minar in Delhi, will be India's tallest buildings ever to be demolished.

Authorities and government organisations are confronting several obstacles prior to the demolition as the twin towers are located very close to a residential complex. There has also been discussion over the years on the environmental effects of such extensive demolitions and what they might signal for upcoming construction projects.

Here is a comprehensive guide to help you understand the why, how, and where of the demolition case, the preparation in line, and the consequences as the D-day draws closer:

Where are the Supertech twin towers located?

Sector 93A in Noida, close to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, is where the twin (40-storey) towers Apex and Ceyane are situated. Within these two towers are over 900 apartments. They are a component of the Noida, Uttar Pradesh-based Supertech project Emerald Court. A total of about 7.5 lakh square feet is occupied by the two towers.

When will the building be torn down?

On August 28 at 2.30 pm, the twin towers are planned for demolition.

Exactly why are the towers being demolished?

The twin towers were ordered to be demolished by the Supreme Court after noting that they were constructed unlawfully. The Emerald Court Group Housing Society Residents' Welfare Association previously filed a petition, alleging that the development violated the 2010 UP Apartments Act. As per PTI reports, it was also claimed that their building violated the minimum distance requirement of 16 metres from an adjoining block, making it unsafe.

The Supreme Court had mandated the towers' destruction in 2021. According to reports, these were allegedly constructed without obtaining the individual flat owners' agreement as required by the UP Apartment Act.

Who will conduct the demolition?

The Supertech Twin buildings will be demolished by the Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering and its South African associate company, Jet Demolitions.

How is the demolition going to happen?

The implosion method will be used to destroy the structures. About 3,700 kg of explosives is being used for the demolition.

The Apex tower includes 11 major blast floors, where all of the columns on each floor will have explosives installed and blasted, and seven secondary floors, where 60% of the columns will be blasted, according to project specifications.

How much time will the demolition take?

The astounding event will only last for roughly 15 seconds. Utkarsh Mehta, a partner in the demolition company Edifice Engineering, was quoted by PTI as saying "It will take nine to 10 seconds for all the explosives to blast in a series making a loud noise."

He said that the projected period for dust dispersion is 10 minutes. "After the blasts, the structures won't come down all at once and would take four to five seconds to come down fully," he said.

What will the cost of the demolition be?

The twin towers' demolition will probably cost close to Rs 20 crore because it requires a lot of explosives, labour and equipment.

What volume of debris can be expected?

Approximately 35,000 cubic metres of rubble are anticipated to be left behind after the destruction of the buildings, according to projections made by the project's administrators.

Additionally, two societies — Emerald Court and the neighbouring ATS Village — and their residents would be most affected by the demolition of the roughly 100-metre-tall twin towers, according to the officials.

What arrangements are being made for the demolition?

- On August 28, more than 5,000 people will leave the Emerald Court and ATS Village organisations. The residents must leave the property by 7:30 am, and only those who have received safety clearance from Edifice may return after 4 pm.

- More than 2,500 automobiles will no longer be part of society. The Botanical Garden metro station's multilevel parking structure will include space for them as per the Noida Authority. More than 5,000 automobiles can comfortably fit in the parking lot of the metro station at a time.

- There will be restrictions on entry for people, cars, and animals in the vicinity of the twin towers.

- On August 28, from 2.15 to 2.45 p.m., the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will be closed to vehicular traffic.

- The road built behind the park in front of the twin towers will be used to park emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks.

- There are about 50 beds set aside at the Felix Hospital in Sector 137 for residents in case they get sick, including 12 beds for Emerald Court residents who are bedridden, according to PTI reports.

- On August 28, there will only be 10 workers left at the demolition site. Two Indian blasters, Edifice project manager Mayur Mehta, and seven personnel of its South African expert partner Jet Demolition will be among these.

- Additionally, the Noida Police issued a directive prohibiting the use of drones in urban airspace from August 26 through August 31, citing safety concerns in light of Supertech's unlawful structures being demolished. "Drones will not be operated by any private person or institution from August 26 to 31. Violation of this order will be an offense punishable under IPC Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by government officials)," the order states.

What happens with the debris generated?

- It shall be discarded in accordance with the 2016 Waste Management Rules for Construction and Demolition.

- There would need to be 1,200 to 1,300 truck loads of material removed from the location. Sector 80 is home to the Noida Authority's 300-ton per day capacity construction and demolition waste management facility. It is still unclear, though, if it would be processed there given the amount of debris that would be removed, according to PTI.

- All of the debris, according to the authorities, won't be wasted. The destruction is expected to yield around 4,000 tonnes of iron and steel, which the Edifice intends to use to partially recoup the demolition cost.

- Both Emerald Court and ATS Village societies will have geo-textile covering. For the entire process, 110 km of wired mesh comprised of galvanised iron and geotextile weighing about 225 tonnes will be used.

Ishtiaq Ahmed, the general manager of planning for the Noida Authority, was quoted by PTI as saying that 21,000 cubic metres of the rubble will be deposited on a remote plot of land that was five to six hectares in size. He stated that the remaining rubble would be thrown into a pit that has been created in the twin towers' basement sections.

Will the buyers receive their investment in the twin skyscrapers back?

Prior to this, the Supreme Court had instructed the government to return homebuyers their whole purchase price plus 12 percent interest starting at the time of booking. Additionally, it stipulated that the RWA of the Emerald Court project shall receive Rs 2 crore as compensation for the harassment brought on by the twin tower building.

The Supertech Emerald Court Project's investors and homeowners were entitled to receive their money back by January 17, 2022, along with 12 percent interest, according the court's directives.

Has a demolition like this taken place in the past?

In Kerala's Kochi district, the Supreme Court had two years ago ordered a demolition action against four illegal seaside housing complexes. The final two high towers were demolished using a controlled implosion technique, bringing the demolition campaign for Kochi's unlawful Maradu flats to an end.

The biggest incident of cross-border fighting since a 11-day war between Israel and Hamas last year occurred on Saturday as Israeli soldiers and Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip exchanged fire.

Eleven people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes, including a senior commander from the militant organisation Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which is supported by Iran.

Numerous rocket attacks by militants on Israeli cities and villages have disrupted daily life for hundreds of thousands of Israelis.

Here is a look at the most recent escalation of violence:

IN HAMAS’ SHADOW

The smaller of the two main Palestinian militant organisations in the Gaza Strip, Islamic Jihad, is considerably outnumbered by the prevailing Hamas organisation. However, it has direct Iranian financial and military support, which has become the impetus behind its rocket assaults and other conflicts with Israel.

Because it is in charge of managing the day-to-day operations of the poor area, Hamas, which took over administration of Gaza in 2007 from the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority, frequently faces restrictions on its ability to take action. Islamic Jihad, which has emerged as the more violent faction and occasionally even challenges Hamas' control, has no such responsibilities.

In order to create an Islamic Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza, and all of what is currently Israel, the organisation was created in 1981. The European Union, the United States State Department, and other governments have labelled it as a terrorist group. Islamic Jihad, like Hamas, is committed to destroying Israel.

THE RELATIONSHIP TO IRAN

Iran, a longtime adversary of Israel, provides Islamic Jihad with money, training, and other resources, but the majority of the group's weaponry are domestically made. It has recently created an arsenal comparable to Hamas's, complete with longer-range missiles that can reach Tel Aviv, the capital of central Israel. Although no rockets appear to have reached the area, air raid sirens went off on Friday in the suburbs to the south of Tel Aviv.

Islamic Jihad has leadership in Beirut and Damascus as well as its home stronghold of Gaza, where it maintains close links with Iranian authorities.

The group's main leader, Ziad al-Nakhalah, was in Tehran meeting with Iranian officials on Friday as Israel started its offensive in Gaza.

AIMING AT COMMANDERS

Israel has already assassinated leaders of the Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Taiseer al-Jabari, the commander it murdered on Friday, took the place of Bahaa Abu el-Atta, who was killed by Israel in a strike in 2019. Since the 2014 war in the Gaza Strip, his killing marked the first prominent assassination of an Islamic Jihad leader by Israel.

Al-Jabari, 50, was a part of the "military council," Islamic Jihad's governing body in Gaza. During the 2021 war, he oversaw the militant Islamic Jihad activity in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip. Israel said that he was getting ready to attack Israel with anti-tank missiles.

His demise followed Israel's earlier this week arrest of a prominent Islamic Jihad commander in the West Bank. Senior Islamic Jihad official in the northern West Bank, Bassam al-Saadi, is 62 years old. Al-Saadi reportedly worked to increase the group's capabilities and reach in the West Bank, according to Israeli media.

Al-Saadi was an active member of the Islamic Jihad and was imprisoned in Israel for a total of 15 years across several terms. In two separate occurrences in 2002, Israel executed two of his sons who were also Islamic Jihad members. The same year, a major battle in the West Bank city of Jenin resulted in the destruction of his home.

Zvika Haimovich, the former commander of the Israeli military's air defence unit, warned that hitting the commanders would have an instant impact on the entire organisation.

It immediately causes a major snarl within the Jihad.

A COMPREHENSIVE HARMONY

Hamas has engaged in four conflicts with Israel since assuming power in 2007, frequently with the assistance of fighters from Islamic Jihad. The border has been mostly calm since last year's 11-day war, with the exception of a flare-up earlier this year. Hamas also seems to be staying out of this latest conflict, which may prevent it from turning into a full-scale war.

While Hamas upholds the cease-fire, Islamic Jihad terrorists have challenged Hamas by shooting rockets, frequently without claiming responsibility, to increase its profile among Palestinians. Israel blames Hamas for all rocket fire that originates in Gaza.

Hamas must choose between quelling Islamic Jihad's attacks on Israel and avoiding the wrath of Palestinians if it retaliates against the organisation. Hamas will have the final word on how long and how ferocious this round of combat lasts, just like in previous flare-ups.

CARETAKER LEADER

Israel is currently engaged in a lengthy political crisis that will force Israelis to cast ballots for the sixth time in less than four years this fall as a result of the war.

After the politically diverse government he assisted in forming fell apart and the new elections were called, caretaker leader Yair Lapid assumed control earlier this summer.

Lapid, a centrist author and former TV host, lacks the security experience that many Israelis believe is necessary for leadership. His political future may be determined by the ongoing conflict; it may improve if he can establish himself as a capable commander, or it may suffer with a protracted operation as Israelis try to enjoy the remaining few weeks of summer.

Lapid aspires to defeat security hawk and current corruption trial defendant Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming election.

Explained: What's causing the recent conflict between Israel and Gaza?

Concern has been raised by China's decision to stop working with the US on the climate catastrophe, and seasoned climate diplomats are calling for a quick restart of negotiations to help prevent worsening global warming.

Beijing revealed a number of actions on Friday in response to Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, visiting Taiwan, which it called a "egregious provocation." China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has conducted extensive military drills close to the island, has announced that it will no longer cooperate with the US on important matters like climate change.

With only a few months until the pivotal UN Cop27 in Egypt this fall, China's exit from climate negotiations—the amount of which is still unclear—threatens to undermine the already precarious cooperation between the world's two greatest carbon emitters. Without robust action from the US and China, which together account for nearly 40% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, experts say there is little chance of preventing catastrophic global warming.

A summer of climate change-related calamities, including record heatwaves and wildfires sweeping the US and Europe, punishingly high temperatures sweltering India and China, and disastrous flooding plaguing the US, south Asia, and Africa, has contributed to the breakdown in relations.

The US is about to enact historic climate legislation at home, but the world's nations as a whole are still not doing enough to prevent exceeding set temperature goals. António Guterres, the UN secretary-general, warned last month that the objective of keeping warming to 1.5C is "on life support" and that its pulse is deteriorating.

“US-China relations have always been a rollercoaster and we often witness flare-ups, but while you can freeze talks, you cannot freeze climate impacts,” said Laurence Tubiana, chief executive of the European Climate Foundation and a key architect of the Paris climate accords for the Guardian.

“It’s in the self-interest of China and the US to act on climate and start talking. Indeed, China recognizes its own self-interest to act; it is still committed to Paris and is moving forward on domestic pledges around methane and coal phasedown.”

At various moments in recent years, the US and China have accused one another of failing to do enough to reduce emissions that contribute to global warming. When then-president Donald Trump repealed a number of environmental regulations in 2017, China criticised the US for its "selfishness," and Joe Biden, Trump's successor, said last year that Chinese president Xi Jinping had made a "huge mistake" by skipping the Cop26 climate summit in Scotland.

However, at the same negotiations in Glasgow in November, the two countries made progress when they decided on a surprise plan to collaborate "with urgency" on reducing emissions. The delegation leader for China, Xie Zhenhua, stated that both nations must "accelerate a green and low carbon transition." The US climate envoy, John Kerry, acknowledged that there was "no shortage of differences" between the countries but insisted that "cooperation is the only way to get this work done." This is a discussion of physics and science.

According to Nate Hultman, a former Kerry adviser who is now the director of the Center for Global Sustainability at the University of Maryland, this rapprochement on climate has aided in fostering partnership between US and Chinese organisations as well as offering leadership to other nations.

According to Hultman, "the US and China cooperating is a crucial facet of addressing climate change; it has the ability to inspire others to do more."

"The overall relationship is quite complicated, but both nations recognise that this issue has a global component in addition to a bilateral one. I'm hoping that will reunite them once more. Hopefully this break won't last long, and they'll be able to resume negotiations as soon as possible.

High-level climate negotiations may now be scaled back, according to Hultman, but other bilateral cooperation may continue despite the lack of information at this time. He argued that the Cop27 discussions in Egypt may still result in progress, regardless of the state of relations between the US and China.

“This has been challenging and at times we are going to stall out,” Hultman said. “But Cop27 won’t just crash out if the US and China don’t iron out their differences. We would have to focus on what else can be done as an international community.”

Do you remember your science lessons from school? Do you remember learning about chromosomes? We were taught that there are two chromosomes X and Y and that each of us has a set of chromosomes. Individuals with XX (or two X chromosomes) are female, while those with XY (or one X and one Y chromosome) are male. A recently published study has now revealed that many men can actually carry an extra chromosome. The study was published in the journal Genetics in Medicine. It included data on more than 207,000 men. It was discovered that of the participants, over 350 had an extra chromosome, either X or Y. Very few of these men knew about this abnormality or had it mentioned in their medical records.

Talking to the Guardian Dr Ken Ong, co-senior author of the study who is a pediatric endocrinologist in the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge says that they were surprised at how common this abnormality is.

The National Human Genome Research Institute reported that previous estimations indicated that approximately 100 to 200 men out of every 100,000 are XXY. An estimated 18 to 100 out of every 100,000 were believed to be XYY.

Having an extra chromosome can raise the risk of certain health conditions. Those having Klinefelter syndrome (KS) or an extra X chromosome are linked to reproductive problems like infertility and delayed puberty. According to the National Human Genome Research Institute, XXY men are four times more likely than XY men to have late puberty.

On the other hand, with an extra Y chromosome or 47,XYY syndrome does not come with reproductive problems but was linked to learning disabilities, including delay in acquiring speech and motor skills. According to the Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center, they also have unusually low muscle tone.

Additionally, both XXY and XYY men have a higher rate of type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the artery walls), pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the veins and lung arteries), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (which obstructs airflow to the lungs).

In their report, the authors questioned: "why both KS and 47,XYY should show striking similarities in conferring substantially higher risks for many diseases in common." As per them, future research is needed to examine the reasons causing this elevated risk.
