Allowing it to progress to the next stage of scrutiny in parliament, British MPs in the House of Commons voted through the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol Bill by 295 votes to 221 after a debate.

Highlighting that the unilateral move is justified under international law because of the “genuinely exceptional situation,” the British government says the protocol is burdening businesses and undermining peace in Northern Ireland.

The legislation would remove checks on goods entering Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK if approved by lawmakers.

Despite European Union warnings it is illegal and could spark a trade war, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he thought the plan could be approved “fairly rapidly”.

Due to the EU's unwillingness to reopen negotiations, the British government plans are the only solution to resolve trade problems in Northern Ireland, according to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

Following a series of ethics scandals and two special election defeats, the plans have caused concern among some of Johnson’s fellow Conservatives.

If it goes ahead with its plan to rewrite the rules of the post-Brexit deal, the EU has threatened to retaliate against the UK.

Slamming the UK government's “unlawful” approach to the Northern Ireland Protocol, Irish foreign affairs minister Simon Coveney said he was “hugely disappointed”.

After Russia’s throttling of deliveries to Europe, a senior energy official has warned that German consumers could face a tripling of gas prices in the coming months.

Citing technical reasons that Berlin dismisses as a pretext, Moscow reduced the flow of gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline by 40 per cent last week.

The head of the Federal Network Agency, German energy official Klaus Müller, has said that Russia's decision prompted a sixfold rise in market prices.

It comes after Economy Minister Robert Habeck told Der Spiegel magazine that Germany is heading for a gas shortage if Russian gas supplies remain as low as they are now.

By creating "the best breeding ground for populism, which is intended to undermine our liberal democracy from within," Russian President Vladimir Putin's aim is to divide the country, according to Habeck.

Germany, which has triggered Phase 2 of three of its emergency gas plan, will prioritise private households over energy firms if it enters the third phase of the plan, according to Müller.

Following Russian invasion of Ukraine, the bloc's dependence on Russian gas supplies has been exposed. Sparking a frantic search for alternative energy sources, with EU members considering various scenarios in order to prevent "terrible and drastic" consequences for the gas industry.

Expert warns German gas prices could triple as Russia reduces supply

EU leaders on Friday warned that "cheap energy is gone" and agreed to boost preparations for further cuts in Russian gas, accusing Moscow of "weaponising" energy via a supply squeeze which Germany warned could partly shut its industry.

A day after celebrations over setting Kyiv on the road to membership of the bloc, Friday's summit in Brussels was a sober reflection on the economic impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with growing worries over soaring prices and warnings of a "tough winter".

"Inflation is a major concern for all of us," European Council chief Charles Michel told a news conference as the two-day summit ended.

"Russia's war of aggression is pushing up the price of food, energy and commodities," he said, adding that leaders had agreed to closely coordinate their economic policy responses.

The summit agreed few concrete steps but the leaders tasked the European Commission with finding more ways to secure "supply at affordable prices" because of "the weaponisation of gas by Russia."

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the search for alternative supplies was already in progress, with U.S. LNG deliveries up 75 per cent this year from last year, and Norway pipeline gas deliveries up 15 per cent.

Besides, the EU executive will present a plan on preparedness for more gas cuts from Russia to leaders in July she said, adding: "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. That's what we are doing right now."

The European Commission will come up with proposals and options to discuss at the next EU summit in October, including considering alternative market designs that would potentially include decoupling gas from the formation of the market price for electricity, von der Leyen said.

"We are working on different models, not only to look into how to curb the energy prices or electricity prices but also to look at the market design, with the question: is the market design we have today still fit for purpose?", she said.

One contentious issue is whether governments should step in to cap prices.

"It is only a matter of time before the Russians close down all gas shipments," said one EU official ahead of Friday's talks.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck warned his country was heading for a gas shortage if Russian supplies remained as low as now, and some industries would have to close come winter.

"Companies would have to stop production, lay off their workers, supply chains would collapse, people would go into debt to pay their heating bills," he told Der Spiegel magazine.

The EU relied on Russia for as much as 40 per cent of its gas needs before the war - rising to 55 per cent for Germany - leaving a huge gap to fill in an already tight global gas market.

European Union plans for life without Russian gas amid inflation spike

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told a joint news conference with the EU's foreign policy chief in Tehran that Iran's indirect talks with the United States on reviving the 2015 nuclear pact will resume soon, as reported by Reuters.

"We are prepared to resume talks in the coming days. What is important for Iran is to fully receive the economic benefits of the 2015 accord," said Amirabdollahian, adding that he had held a "long but positive meeting" with the European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

Borrell made the announcement after a two-hour meeting with Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on the second day of a previously unannounced visit to the Islamic republic.

Borrell said, "We are expected to resume talks in the coming days and break the impasse. It has been three months and we need to accelerate the work. I am very happy about the decision that has been made in Tehran and Washington."

Amir-Abdollahian confirmed the resumption of the negotiations.

Many European firms are rethinking their investments in China because of its strict Covid controls, a top business group said Monday, warning that disruptions had pummelled operations.

While the rest of the world has steadily removed coronavirus curbs, China has remained committed to its zero-Covid strategy, using lockdowns and mass testing to stamp out all infections.

But this strategy has hammered businesses and snarled supply chains -- 60 percent of respondents in a survey of European businesses said it has become harder to do business in China, in large part due to Covid controls.

"We hope that China is really waking up," Bettina Schoen-Behanzin, vice president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, told AFP.

"(We hope) that they find a way to get out of this zero-tolerance Covid strategy because it causes huge uncertainty and this is for sure not good for investment."

The chamber conducted the survey on over 600 member firms in February and March just as strict lockdowns were imposed in several areas to control China's worst Covid outbreak in two years -- from business hub Shanghai to the northern breadbasket province of Jilin.

The body also did a follow-up in April to assess the impact of the lockdowns and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

It found that 92 percent of member companies were hit by supply chain problems, and three-quarters said their operations were negatively impacted by the Covid controls.

Further, 60 percent of respondents said in April that they had lowered their 2022 revenue projections.

The Ukraine war also impacted confidence -- a third of the firms surveyed cited geopolitical tensions as a reason for the Chinese market becoming less attractive.

"The role China played over the last two years in bolstering European companies' global revenues looks set to diminish," the report released on Monday said.

"And recent events have led many to question just how many eggs they are willing to keep in their China basket."

The Covid containment measures also hampered European firms' ability to recruit international and local talent, the chamber said.

Its annual survey found that 58 percent of companies faced difficulties in recruiting international and local talent, pointing to the Covid controls and "a wealth of ever-changing visa and work permit procedures and extreme limitations on travel in and out of China".

'The world does not wait'

China is the world's second-biggest economy with a huge market, however, making it difficult for firms to walk away.

"Companies, businesses are not leaving China, because the market is too big, the market is too important, and there are for sure many growth opportunities ahead," Schoen-Behanzin told AFP.

"But they are localising, they are onshoring, and they are rethinking their footprint in China, in Asia," she added.

"They are shifting, especially future investments."

However, if the Covid restrictions drag on for another year, companies could start to feel even more pain.

"The world does not wait for China," Schoen-Behanzin said.

"If there is no change, then definitely companies will start to think about backup plans and they obviously would go into other markets."

It would be "very serious" if it enacted a new law to unilaterally change part of a Brexit deal to try to ease trade with Northern Ireland, according to Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin.

Russia is putting the world at risk of famine through its blockade of Ukraine's shipments of grains and restrictions on its own exports, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Saturday.

The threat to food security and a "battle of narrative" with Russia on Western-imposed sanctions on Moscow over Ukraine will dominate European Union foreign ministers' talks in Luxembourg on Monday.

"We are ready to work with the UN and our partners to prevent any unwanted impact on global food security," Borrell said in an article published on his official blog.

"Russia's conscious political choice is to 'weaponise'" grain exports and "use them as a tool for blackmail against anyone that opposes its aggression" in Ukraine, Borrell said.

"Russia turned the Black Sea into a war zone, blocking shipments of grain and fertiliser from Ukraine but also affecting Russian merchant shipping. Russia is also applying quotas and taxes on its grain exports," he added.

Russia putting world in danger of famine, warns European Union

The European Commission on Friday (June 17) backed Ukraine's bid for the European Union "candidate status". EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine should be welcomed as a candidate country. She added, "This is based on the understanding that good work has been done but important work also remains to be done". While reacting to the decision, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had "nothing against" the bid. This is a positive step for Ukraine as the move could provide a push to the country's aspirations of joining the bloc. However, the road is not going to be easy despite the approval. Here are some of the hurdles that would Ukraine have to clear: News agency Reuters reported that Kyiv would likely take years to become a member of the 27-nation EU, only in case they want to. Ukraine would be required to carry out economic and political reforms. And it appears to be highly unlikely the bloc would take in a country in a state of war. The EU notes the procedures to join the bloc on its official website: "Becoming a member of the EU is a complex procedure which does not happen overnight. Once an applicant country meets the conditions for membership, it must implement EU rules and regulations in all areas." What's the process for Ukraine? The Commission's membership candidate proposal for Ukraine will be discussed by EU leaders. They all need to agree for the status to be formally granted. Once that happens, Kyiv will start negotiations on aligning its laws with those of the EU under 35 so-called "chapters", or thematic areas from financial to justice to climate. A chapter is closed when the candidate country shows it has already implemented EU laws in that field. All 35 must be closed for accession. Ukraine would be required to reform its economy and strengthen its democratic institutions, including fighting corruption. It will have to beef up legal protections and track records on everything from human rights to market competition. Can the bid be stalled? When all formalities are done, the EU and Ukraine will prepare an accession treaty. It must be approved by Ukraine, all EU governments and the European Parliament. That means the process can always be stalled by politics. Or be sped up by them, as is the case currently with the Commission moving on candidate status, a step that would have been unimaginable just a few months ago. Explainer: The road to EU membership. What it takes to be from candidate to member

Which are European Union candidate countries and what's their status now?

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (June 17) said that Russia had 'nothing against' Ukraine joining the European Union (EU). His words came on the same day European Commission recommended granting Ukraine a candidate status in the EU. Putin was speaking at Russia's annual economic showcase, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"We have nothing against it. It's their sovereign decision to join economic unions or not... It's their business, the business of the Ukrainian people," said Putin.

Russia is currently invading Ukraine. Putin has in past expressed Russia's fierce opposition to Ukraine joining North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Such a scenario has been deemed a 'security threat' by Moscow.

But "as far as their economic integration is concerned, it is their choice", Putin said.

"The EU is not a military alliance, unlike NATO," he said.

The Russian president, however, said he believed that if Ukraine went ahead with joining the EU it would "turn into a semi-colony" of Western countries.

"That's my opinion," he said.

Russia not cause of global issues, says Putin

During his speech, Putin defended Russia by saying global economic problems were not caused by the Russian invasion.

"What is happening is not the result of recent months, much less the result of a special military operation that Russia is conducting in the Donbas," Putin said referring to the predominantly Russia-speaking region of Eastern Ukraine.

"The rising prices, inflation, the problem with foods, prices for fuel.. are the result of systematic mistakes in the economic policy of the current US administration and European bureaucracy," Putin said in televised remarks at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Moscow's military action became a "lifeline" for Western countries "that allows them to blame their own miscalculations on others, in this case, on Russia," he added.

Gas prices were also on the rise Friday, exacerbated by the decision by Russian energy giant Gazprom to slash deliveries to Europe, citing repair works.

Russia has 'nothing against' Ukraine joining EU, says Vladimir Putin

The European Union is expected to decide soon whether to recommend that Ukraine be granted candidate status for EU membership.

European Union recommends Ukraine candidacy

Google, Meta, Twitter and Microsoft agreed on Thursday to take a firm stance against disinformation as part of an amended European Union of conduct, which could result in large fines if they don’t. The new Code of Practice on Disinformation has more than 30 signatories, including advertising groups. They agreed to do more combat deep fakes, fake accounts and political advertising with fines of up to 6 per cent of a company’s global revenue, as per the European Commission, confirmed by a Reuters report last week. The firms including, Amazon’s live streaming, TikTok, and Twitch, have six months to meet their commitments. They must submit a progress report at the start of 2023, the Reuters report added.

Vera Jourova, Vice-President of the Commission said, "The new code is a testimony that Europe has learned its lessons and that we are not naive any longer." She further added that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Brexit have expedited the Union’s fight against fake news.

According to Thierry Breton, industry chief of the European Union the sanctions could include barring companies from operating in Europe.

A top European Union court on Wednesday annulled a nearly one-billion-euro antitrust fine imposed against US chipmaking giant Qualcomm by the European Commission in 2018.

The General Court decided to scrap Brussels' decision "in its entirety" as it "committed a number of irregularities" when it put the case together, affecting Qualcomm's rights of defence.

It also said it decided to "invalidate the Commission's analysis of the conduct alleged against Qualcomm."

Brussels imposed the 997-million-euro fine, amounting to $1.2 billion at the time, saying the company "abused its market dominance" by paying Apple to use its chips exclusively in iPhones and iPads.

The EU court ruled that the Commission failed to fully respect its obligation to record meetings and conference calls with third parties in the investigation.

But the court said that it was apparent from the Commission's decisions that Apple "had had no technical alternative to Qualcomm's Long Term Evolution (LTE) chipsets for the majority of its requirements during the period concerned".

European Union court annuls Qualcomm's billion-euro antitrust fine

The European Commission launched new legal action against Britain on Wednesday, accusing London of threatening peace in Northern Ireland by trying to overhaul the post-Brexit trade deal.

"The UK government tabled legislation confirming its intention to unilaterally break international law," EU commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic said.

"More precisely to break an agreement that protects peace and stability in Northern Ireland," he said.

EU takes legal action against UK for breaching N.Ireland agreement

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis has officially crossed 100 days and it caught the attention of leaders and the general public all around Europe. The western countries were quick to sanction Russia over their actions and there were also a huge number of protests in cities across Europe. However, according to a recent poll, the public attention has gone down regarding the invasion and concerns over living costs is the main worry for the European public. The survey, conducted by European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), focused on people from nine EU member states – Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden – and the UK.

The survey pointed out that the support for Ukraine remain quite high among the European countries, but it is no longer the top concern. “Europeans had surprised Putin – and themselves – by their unity so far, but the big stresses are coming now,” said Mark Leonard, co-author of the survey, told The Guardian.

The survey pointed at public fatigue over the long-drawn war in Ukraine and when it comes to voting, it may not have the same impact as it would have had a couple of months ago. Most voters said that they want the war to be over soon even if it means that Ukraine loses some territories.

Most voters said that they want the war to be over soon even if it means that Ukraine loses some territories. Although officials and leaders in the bloc have cautioned that the road to membership is a long one, Kyiv has been pushing for rapid admission into the European Union.

According to Leyen, the discussions with Zelensky "will feed into our assessment" of Ukraine's readiness to be considered a candidate country to begin lengthy negotiations.

Ahead of a June 23-24 summit, EU commissioners and officials are expected to pore over Ukraine's bid next week.
