Buckling under pressure, Apple on Tuesday announced it will be complying with the mandate given by the European Union on having USB-C chargers for all devices. Reportedly, without going into details, an Apple executive, speaking at a Wall Street Journal conference in Laguna Beach, California said the company 'will have to comply' with the new rules. "We have no choice...as we do around the world, [Apple will] comply with local laws," Apple marketing chief Greg Joswiak. When quizzed about the timing of the rollout of the devices with USB-C charging ports, Joswiak said “the Europeans are the ones dictating timing for European customers.” Joswiak, however, made it clear that Apple was not happy with the changes it was forced to make. He said that since over a billion people already use Apple's Lighting cable, the switch would create a lot of e-waste. "We think it would have been better environmentally and better for our customers to not have a government be that prescriptive." Joswiak further explained that the company had been at loggerheads with the European authorities for a decade. He said if Apple had adopted the micro-USB technology forced by the EU members, neither the current Lightning nor the USB-C charging would have been invented. WATCH | Will Apple switch to wireless charging in EU? × As reported by WION, earlier this month, the European Union parliament approved new rules that make sure a universal charging port is introduced for electronic gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earbuds and other devices by 2024. Notably, iPhones are charged from a lightning cable while Android-based devices use USB-C chargers. Read more: In a shock to Apple, EU to introduce USB-C chargers for all electronic gadgets by 2024 The motion passed with 602 votes in favour and 13 against it. Accordingly, the vote by the EU parliament confirmed the previous agreement of making USB-C chargers used by Android-based devices the standard for all of the continent. The Cupertino-based company, for long, has been panned by users and critics alike for introducing myriad variations that burn a hole in the pocket of consumers. Experts have called this practice a 'tie-sale' where Apple obliged the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture which was an abusive and illegal commercial practice. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Saturday called for reforms of the European Union to make it fit for the admission of new countries as well as more military autonomy for the 27-country bloc.

Speaking at the Congress of the Party of European Socialists in Berlin, Scholz advocated for gradually abolishing the principle of unanimity for decisions in foreign policy, but also in other areas such as tax policy.

“I know that we still have a lot of convincing to do there,” the chancellor said. “But I also say clearly: if a geopolitical Europe is our aspiration, then majority decisions are a gain and not a loss of sovereignty.”

Currently, many EU decisions can only be made if all countries vote unanimously.

Scholz also supports more military autonomy of the EU. He called for coordinated procurement of weapons and equipment, the establishment of an EU rapid reaction force by 2025, and for an EU headquarters for European armed forces.

“In Europe, we need better interplay between our defense efforts," he said. "In the future, Europe will need a coordinated increase in capabilities...we must confidently and jointly advance European defence.”

The European Union will unveil proposals next week to launch joint gas buying within months and develop an alternative gas price benchmark, but a meeting of EU countries on Wednesday left it unresolved whether the package would include a gas price cap.

The European Union will unveil proposals next week to launch joint gas buying within months and develop an alternative gas price benchmark, but a meeting of EU countries on Wednesday left it unresolved whether the package would include a gas price cap. The 27-country EU is plotting its next move to tame soaring energy prices and shield consumers from surging bills, as Europe heads into a winter of scarce Russian gas, a cost of living crisis and the looming threat of recession. After a meeting of EU energy ministers in Prague, EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said the European Commission would lay out plans to develop an alternative EU gas price benchmark, and quickly launch joint gas buying among EU countries. Simson said, however, it was still unclear if there was enough support among countries for a price cap on gas used for power generation to be added to the October 18 package; a move many countries have sought. "We will see over the weekend how we can proceed with capping the gas for power generation, if this is at that stage that we can say that there is a broad majority of member states supporting this measure," she said, adding that the package would set out how a "temporary mechanism" to limit gas prices could work, and the risks it would entail. Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela said ministers had agreed joint gas buying should launch by next summer, and that the Czech Republic - which holds the EU's rotating presidency - would call an emergency meeting of ministers in November to approve the upcoming proposals. "I firmly believe that today's meeting has helped to bridge the divergent views between the member states," Sikela said. Iberian example With gas prices almost 90 per cent higher than a year ago, most EU countries say they want a gas price cap, but have struggled to agree on its design - be it a price cap on all gas, pipeline gas, or just gas used to produce electricity. Spain and Portugal capped the price of gas used in power generation in June, which helped curb local power prices. Support has built among other EU countries to roll it out EU-wide, although some warn it could raise gas demand across the bloc since Spain's gas use increased under the measure. The meeting outcome aligned with many of the measures suggested in a proposal by Germany and the Netherlands who warn broad gas price caps could leave Europe struggling to attract supplies while swerving the cap that 15 other EU states have urged Brussels to propose. The German and Dutch proposal, seen by Reuters, backed an alternative benchmark gas price, joint gas buying and negotiating lower prices with non-Russian suppliers as well as tighter targets to save gas this winter. Norway's energy minister Terje Aasland, who joined Wednesday's meeting along with other European non-EU members, said his country "doesn't recommend" a gas price cap. European gas prices surged after Russia slashed gas deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine, blaming the cuts on Western sanctions imposed over the conflict. EU countries have already rushed through emergency energy windfall profit levies, gas storage filling obligations, and electricity demand curbs to address the surge in energy prices. But the pressure to agree more EU-wide measures has increased after Germany said it would spend up to $194 billion to shield its consumers and businesses from high energy costs - prompting a backlash from some countries about the uneven rollout of national support. The European Union on Monday announced it was declaring Nicaragua's representative to the bloc "persona non grata" in retaliation for the expulsion of its ambassador from the Central American country.

"This is a reciprocal response to the decision by the Nicaraguan government on September 28 to declare the head of the EU delegation to Nicaragua as persona non grata. The EU considers the Nicaraguan decision unwarranted," a statement said.

President Daniel Ortega's leftist government has faced diplomatic pressure over what the United States has called a dramatic deterioration of human rights which has seen the jailing of dozens of political opponents, students and journalists.

"The EU reaffirms its continued commitment to the Nicaraguan people and to defending democracy, the rule of law and human rights," the bloc said in its statement.

"The current political crisis in Nicaragua should be resolved through genuine dialogue between the government and opposition."

"The current political crisis in Nicaragua should be resolved through genuine dialogue between the government and opposition." Austria is dragging the European Union (EU) to court. Reportedly, the central European country is not happy with the EU's decision to characterise natural gas and nuclear power generation as sustainable energies.

In what comes as a landmark decision, the European Union Parliament on Tuesday approved new rules that make sure a universal charging port is introduced for electronic gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earbuds and other devices by 2024. The motion passed with 602 votes in favour and 13 against it. Accordingly, the vote by the EU parliament confirms the previous agreement of making USB-C chargers used by Android-based devices the standard for all of the continent. Succinctly put, all devices in the EU will have to carry the same charging port. Read more: Apple to double iPhone exports from India by next year The move is expected to hurt Apple more than other electronic companies. Reportedly, iPhones are charged from a lightning cable while Android-based devices use USB-C chargers. Apple also has been pushing its proprietary MagSafe charging technology to more and more devices. The ruling was prompted after complaints from both iPhone and Android users had the same theme of having to switch to different chargers whenever switching devices. As reported extensively by WION, the Cupertino-based company, for long, has been panned by users and critics alike for introducing myriad variations that burn a hole in the pocket of consumers. While Apple will have to pivot on its charging slot, it is facing flak for shipping iPhones without a battery charger. Experts have called this practice a 'tie-sale' where Apple obliged the consumer to purchase a second product of its exclusive manufacture which was an abusive and illegal commercial practice. In September, the Brazilian government levied a fine of $2.38 million on Apple and ordered the company to stop selling its iPhones without a battery charger in the South American country. The eighth round of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine were recommended by the executive of the European Union on Wednesday. These measures include tougher trade restrictions, more people being placed on individual blacklists, and a cap on oil prices for third-party nations.

The plan will now be presented to the bloc's 27 members, who must put aside their differences in order to apply the fresh penalties on top of the seven other sets of sanctions already placed on Russia since its soldiers invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Despite Russia's military mobilisation last week, nuclear threats, and moves to annex a portion of Ukraine after invading the former Soviet republic that seeks EU membership, the EU may need some time to accomplish that.

"We do not accept the sham referendums (in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine) nor any kind of annexation...And we are determined to make the Kremlin pay the price for this further escalation," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters.

"We are proposing a new package of biting sanctions."

A couple of weeks after Taiwanese major Foxconn announced it will be building a semiconductor plant in India, the European Union (EU) has swung into action to persuade other Taiwanese companies to do the same in the continent.

A couple of weeks after Taiwanese major Foxconn announced it will be building a semiconductor plant in India, the European Union (EU) has swung into action to persuade other Taiwanese companies to do the same in the continent. The EU has been courting and serenading local Taiwanese companies as one of the 'like minded' allies it would like to work with under the European Chips Act unveiled in February, according to a Reuters report. Fielding questions from reporters regarding local semiconductor companies expanding their footprint in Europe, Taiwan's deputy economy minister Chen Chern-chyi said, "To my knowledge, the European Commission and member states are talking to some of our companies, which is purely a commercial decision for the companies to make." "From the government's perspective, we are pleased to see our companies deploy globally and with our democratic allies, as long as we share the same values we like to form a trusted partnership," he said further. There had been murmurs of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest chipmaker coming to Germany last year. However, no progress has been made since then. With the major economies across the globe suffering a significant supply chain crunch, exacerbated by the lack of semiconductors, the Taiwanese chip companies have become all the more valuable as courting attempts intensify. India to get a semiconductor factory As reported by WION, earlier this month, Indian company Vedanta Ltd. and Foxconn joined hands to invest $19.5 billion to build semiconductor and display manufacturing facilities in India's western state of Gujarat, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state. European Union foreign ministers have decided to impose new sanctions of Russia as the crisis in Ukraine officially entered its seventh month. EU bats for war crimes tribunal after mass burial site unearthed in Ukraine

Hungary is no longer a “full democracy” and the European Union needs to do everything to bring it back into line with European values, the European Parliament said on Thursday.

MEPs voted 433 in favour, 123 against, to now describe Hungary — ruled by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who maintains close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin — “a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy” in “serious breach” of EU democratic norms.

The vote was largely symbolic and does not change the course of the Union’s decision making, which requires unanimity of all 27 member states — including Hungary — to adopt major issues, such as sanctions on Russia.

The European Union's executive has outlined plans to raise more than $140 billion from energy firms to help shield households and businesses from soaring prices that threaten economic downturn and insolvencies.

To ease inflation in the country, Germany's ruling coalition has agreed on a $65 billion inflation relief package. Reportedly, the package will help reduce the financial strain on households as Russian gas supplies remain halted with no timeline of resumption laid out by Moscow. This is the third relief package to be doled out by the German government which takes the total to $95 billion. This particular relief package will include tax breaks for energy-intensive companies and cheap public transport for the citizens. Moreover, under the plan, a $300 one-off payment will be provided to millions of pensioners to battle the soaring energy bills. Similarly, students will be given a slightly smaller $200 one-off payment. Those receiving housing benefits will also receive some kind of monetary help for the rising heating costs. However, the biggest talking point is the $1.5 billion earmarked for public transport. Earlier, Germany had launched a $9 monthly ticket for travel in local and regional transport systems which was a huge hit. The Deutsch government is planning a successor to this scheme which will be priced slightly higher than its previous iteration. "Timely and proportionate relief for citizens and businesses is necessary due to the rapidly increasing burden of high energy prices," Germany's coalition partners were quoted as saying by AFP. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in response to the new package said his government had made 'timely decisions' and that, "We will get through this winter." It is pertinent to note that inflation in Germany rose to eight per cent in the month of August, primarily due to the reduction in gas supplies. We are better equipped: Olaf Scholz However, a day before the shutdown of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, Scholz added that his country was prepared to deal with the Russian threat of gas. "Germany is in a much better position in terms of security of supply than was foreseeable a couple of months ago. We can deal well with the threats we are confronted with from Russia, which uses gas as part of its strategy in the war against Ukraine." Read more: We are in better position to counter Russia's gas threat, says Olaf Scholz Meanwhile, economy minister Robert Habeck stated that Germany had filled its gas reserves to almost 83 per cent. "Germany's gas storage facilities are nearly 83 per cent full and will hit 85 per cent full in early September. As a result, the markets will calm and go down" said Habeck. Germany is dependent on Russia for its energy needs Despite talking tough against Russia, Berlin still hasn't been able to get rid of Russian oil and gas, which accounted for more than 55 per cent of its requirement in 2021. Moreover, since February, the supplies from Russia have been reduced by more than 30 per cent, leading to an acute energy crisis in the country, with the price of oil and gas rising by almost four per cent compared to last year. Germany, akin to several other European nations is scampering for alternatives and looking to build reserves. However, the process is lengthy and one that cannot be achieved over the course of a few months. "We agreed on full suspension of the European Union-Russia visa facilitation agreement. This will significantly reduce the number of new visas issued by the EU member states.
