European Union's (EU) top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Monday (April 24) that the EU would keep working for a political settlement to the conflict in Sudan despite the recent evacuation of diplomatic staff and other EU citizens from the country. "We have to continue pushing for a political settlement. We cannot afford that Sudan implodes because it would send shockwaves throughout the whole of Africa," Borrell said ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers, the news agency Reuters reported.

"It has been a complex operation and it has been a successful operation. Borrell also pointed out that the EU's ambassador to Sudan Aidan O'Hara was still in the country. "The captain is the last one leaving the ship. He is in Sudan but no longer in Khartoum," the top diplomat added.

On April 17, Josep Borrell had said that O'Hara, an Irish diplomat, was attacked in his home in Khartoum.

A number of US states are mulling banning cosmetic products that contain potentially harmful substances known as PFAS or "forever chemicals". The state Senate of Vermont approved a legislation earlier this week which prohibits manufacturers from selling or distributing any consumer-use product that contains perfluoroalkyl and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, as well as several other chemicals. Vermont has joined the likes of California, Colorado and Maryland which have already imposed the restrictions which come into effect in 2025. Products such as deodorant, makeup, shampoo, hair dyes, and sunscreen amongst others usually carry the mentioned harmful chemicals. According to reports, these substances are used extensively by the chemical industry for their long-term resistance to extreme temperatures and corrosion. However, their use has been known to increase cancer risk, increased cholesterol levels, developmental delays in children, reduced immune system function and damage to organs like the liver and thyroid. WATCH | De-influencing: The new viral trend EU mulling the ban as well Apart from the US, the European Union (EU) is also considering a proposal to ban PFAS. Denmark, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and non-EU state Norway are collaborating on the joint proposal and if passed, it will become the bloc's most extensive piece of regulation of the chemical industry. "A ban on PFAS would reduce quantities of PFAS in the environment over the long term. It would also make products and processes safer for humans," read the joint statement. "You can find PFAS in penguins in the Antarctic, in polar bears in the Arctic, even in rain water in Tibet." Reports state that the overall health costs from exposure to PFAS in Europe has been between $55 billion to $90 billion. Even if a ban is put in place, the accumulation of PFAS in environment will continue for several years as waste products still shed the harmful molecules. The government in Belgium also banned TikTok from government phones over concerns of misinformation, privacy and cybersecurity, said the country's prime minister on Friday.

The step taken is similar to the recent ban imposed on the video sharing app by the government authorities in the United States and Europe.

A little more than two years after imposing its unilateral terms of service on users, Meta-owned WhatsApp has agreed to be more transparent about the privacy policy changes, announced the European Commission on Monday.

A little more than two years after imposing its unilateral terms of service on users, Meta-owned WhatsApp has agreed to be more transparent about the privacy policy changes, announced the European Commission on Monday. WhatsApp has agreed that it will explain how the new privacy laws and changes made to it affect the rights of EU users. "Consumers have a right to understand what they agree to and what that choice entails concretely, so that they can decide whether they want to continue using the platform," observed Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders. Earlier in 2021, WhatsApp in a hasty manner pushed a heavy, jargon-filled, non-cohesive update to its terms of service, violating the bloc's laws. Moreover, it forced users to accept the update or otherwise risk losing access to the platform. The company did not make it clear exactly what was changing in the new update which confused the general public. Read more: WhatsApp updates privacy policy, asks users to accept terms or app will be deleted Consequently, rival platforms such as Telegram, Signal made merry and witnessed an unprecedented surge in downloads and usage as users attempted to protect their privacy. In July 2021, a complaint was lodged at the European Commission and with the European network of consumer authorities by the Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs (BEUC) - an umbrella group for 46 independent consumer organisations from 32 countries. The bloc soon issued a series of warnings to the company to get its act right and fix the issues plaguing the platform. Bulgarian police have arrested seven people in connection with the death of 18 migrants, including a child, from Afghanistan, said officials on Saturday (February 18), a day after they were found in an abandoned truck outside the capital city of Sofia. According to the initial investigations, the truck was transporting 52 people who were hiding under wooden planks out of which 18 died due to suffocation.

The three arrests made on Saturday were in addition to the previous four detained suspects who are said to be Bulgarians, reported AFP. This incident may be one of the deadliest people smugglings in the country where there has been an uptick in the number of illegal border crossings. Reports suggest that the truck contained a group of Afghans who were coming from Turkey and were headed for western Europe as Bulgaria serves as a gateway to the 27-nation bloc.

An interior ministry spokesperson told AFP, “I can confirm seven people have been arrested”, while another official reportedly said that the suspected ringleader was among those arrested. The alleged ringleader has a previous record of similar charges and had received a suspended jail sentence of five months for smuggling people.

On Friday, Bulgarian authorities said that 34 people, including five children, were rescued and rushed to the hospital. The country’s interior ministry also later reported that the truck was transporting timber and carrying illegal migrants hidden in compartments. According to reports, the local residents alerted the police about the vehicle which was found abandoned near the village of Lokorsko, 12 km away from the capital city of Sofia.

The head of the National Investigative Service, Borislav Sarafov, told reporters yesterday, that the migrants had crossed the border with neighbouring Turkey and hid in the wood for two days before they were moved onto a truck near the city of Yambol in southeastern Bulgaria. Additionally, Health Minister Asen Medzhidiev had also said that there had been “a lack of oxygen to those who were locked in this truck. They were freezing, wet, they have not eaten for several days.”

Bulgarian cops arrest seven for death of 18 Afghan migrants found in an abandoned truck

The European Commission (EC), on Monday (February 13), raised its growth forecast for the eurozone this year and also expects inflation to be lower than previously estimated at the end of 2022. The expected GDP for the eurozone was raised by 0.9 per cent which was up from the previously predicted 0.3 per cent. Additionally, the eurozone might also dodge recession this year after high levels of gas storage helped ease the energy crisis and labour markets continue to hold up, said the EC.

The EU’s executive arm released the new winter forecasts which show that the 20 countries which use the euro referred to as the ‘eurozone’ will narrowly avoid the technical recession which was expected last year in November as the growth since was 0.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter. Furthermore, the wider European Union is expected to grow by 0.8 per cent from the previously predicted 0.3 per cent, said the EC.

“Almost one year after Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine, the EU economy is on a better footing than expected in autumn”, said the commission, on Monday. They added, “Inflation appears to have peaked and favourable developments in energy markets foreshadow further forceful declines.”

This also comes as the wholesale gas prices have fallen “below pre-war levels” which has been attributed to the above-seasonal average levels of gas storage. The commission also said that the “forecast crucially hinges on the purely technical assumption that Russia's aggression of Ukraine will not escalate”.

Furthermore, the EU executive arm in Brussels while announcing the forecast said, “Both areas are now set to narrowly avoid the technical recession that was anticipated for the turn of the year. The forecast also slightly lowers the projections for inflation for both 2023 and 2024.” Notably, the growth forecast for 2024 remains unchanged with 1.5 per cent for the eurozone and 1.6 per cent for the EU.

The estimates also show that all EU states are expected to witness growth this year except Sweden which might contract by 0.8 per cent as the country is also facing a recession along with Denmark. Whereas, Germany the region’s biggest economy and Austria have also witnessed two consecutive quarters of contraction making them the only two eurozone countries which are facing this phenomenon.

However, the commission has also said there is high uncertainty surrounding the forecast but the risks to growth are now broadly balanced. This could be due to a rise in domestic demand and if the “recent declines in wholesale gas prices pass through to consumer prices more strongly and consumption proves more resilient”, said the EC.

It added, “Nonetheless, a potential reversal of that fall cannot be ruled out in the context of continued geopolitical tensions”. Additionally, the Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni also cautioned that “better than expected doesn’t mean good,” and said Europe continues to face a difficult period of slow growth and only a gradual easing in inflation.

Earlier this month, the protective immunity of Tarabella was removed by the European Union's parliament to ensure that the investigators can question him.

The assembly had overwhelmingly voted in favour of lifting the parliamentary protection of Tarabella and another Italian lawmaker Andrea Cozzolino.

Through their lawyers, both men have conveyed their willingness to co-operate with Belgian authorities.

The prosecutor’s office said that the police detained Taraballa for questioning, adding that it is now for the investigating judge to decide if they would hear him in the next few hours.

Tarabella has denied having any links with the corruption scandal, in which it was suspected that bribes were paid by Qatari and Moroccan officials to influence the European Parliament's policy-making and decisions.

The United Kingdom government has made a payment of $2.8 billion to the European Union to settle the long-standing dispute over footwear and textiles imported into the UK from China.

This week, the final payment of $1.33 billion will be made by the government, bringing the case to a close.

Chief secretary to the Treasury John Glen, in a written statement to the Commons, confirmed the payment.

“Whilst the UK has now left the European Union and this is a legacy matter from before our departure, the government is keen to resolve this long-running case once and for all and is committed to fulfilling its international obligations,” he said while addressing the MPs.

Glen added that the final bill represented the interest which is due on the “principal amounts paid” and would “draw a line” under the dispute.

The case started in 2017 when the anti-fraud office of the European Union said that criminals were allowed by the British authorities to evade customs duties after they made false claims about shoes and clothes imported from China.

It was also discovered that more than half of all footwear and textiles imported from China to the UK were below “the lowest acceptable prices”.

“The UK has argued throughout the case that it took appropriate steps to counter the fraud in question. However, since these infringement proceedings were raised, the UK has taken proportionate and increased steps to combat this fraud without impacting legitimate trade, including by liquidating suspect traders through enforcement action," Glen said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday (February 9) criticised French President Emmanuel Macron's decision to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Paris ahead of a summit of the European Union (EU) in Brussels, as the Russian offensive in Ukraine rages on. Speaking to reporters, Meloni said, "Frankly, the invitation (by Macron) to Zelensky yesterday seemed more inappropriate to me because I think our strength in this fight is unity."

"I understand the questions of internal politics, the fact of privileging domestic public opinion. But there are moments where privileging domestic public opinion risks being detrimental to the cause, and this seems to me one of those cases," Meloni added.

Following his visit to London and Paris, Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Brussels on Thursday to push EU leaders for more weapons in the fight against Russia's invasion and also for a quick start to EU membership talks.

The Ukrainian President will meet Italian PM Meloni on Friday. On Thursday, Meloni said that she would tell Zelensky that Italy remains committed in supporting Ukraine.

"Ours is a 360-degree contribution because we are aware of how — and we have said this many times — in addition to the issue of respect for international law, the value of the sovereignty and freedom of a nation, the conflict in Ukraine involves us all directly. Therefore support for Ukraine at 360 degrees is also the best way to arrive at a possible negotiation," Meloni added.

French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, declined to comment specifically on Meloni's remarks. However, Macron told reporters, "I wanted to receive him, President Zelensky, with Chancellor Scholz" due to Germany and France's "particular role" in the Ukraine situation. Macron further added that it was up to Zelensky himself to choose his schedule, AFP reported.

"What matters is that we are effective together and that we have a strategy that finds a way to a durable peace," the French president added.

Lawmakers in the European Union (EU) will on Wednesday (January 18) vote on a candidate to replace former Parliament vice president Eva Kaili, after a key suspect in the European Parliament corruption scandal cut a deal with Belgian prosecutors to reveal information about the countries involved and the bribes payment, a report by news agency Associated Press said.

Kaili was removed from the top post after she was taken into custody in December last year facing charges of corruption, money laundering and membership in a criminal organisation. Apart from Kaili, Belgian prosecutors suspect that three other lawmakers — former Italian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Pier Antonio Panzeri, Kaili’s partner and Panzeri’s friend Francesco Giorgi; and Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, head of the charity group No Peace Without Justice, were paid by Qatar and Morocco to influence decision-making at the assembly, the report said. However, both countries have denied the allegation. On Tuesday, Belgian prosecutors said that key suspect Pier Antonio Panzeri cut a deal to reveal more information about the scandal in exchange for a lighter sentence. Here is what you need to know about the corruption scandal which has rocked the European Parliament (one of the legislative bodies of the EU): What is the scandal about? Back in 2021, the Belgian Police started to probe possible interference by a foreign government in the European Union's decision-making, acting on the information provided by Belgium's intelligence service, a report by news agency Bloomberg said citing the Le Soir newspaper. Over 20 searches were carried out at the residences and offices of European lawmakers in Belgium's capital Brussels and Italy, and led to the seizure of 1.5 million euros. ALSO READ | Morocco ‘tried to bribe’ members of European Parliament for Pegasus probe details December 2022: Four arrests made In December last year, four suspects were arrested — Eva Kaili, Pier Antonio Panzeri, Francesco Giorgi and Niccolo Figa-Talamanca. They were held on charges of "criminal organisation, corruption and money laundering". Citing Le Soir, the Bloomberg report said that according to Belgian prosecutors, the scandal focused on a Gulf country that was suspected of having sought to influence the political and economic decisions of the European Parliament. The prosecutors believed cash and other gifts were used to secure favours from people of influence in the legislature. In a statement to prosecutors by Francesco Giorgi and a former assistant of ex-Italian MEP Pierre Antonio Panzeri, investigators were focusing on Panzeri’s time as chair of a parliamentary human rights committee, when he worked with the Qatar government. In documents related to the case, Qatar and Morocco were mentioned, and Francesco Giorgi admitted that he was involved in activities led by Panzeri aimed at favouring the interests of these two countries, Le Soir said. News also came out that former EU commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos accepted 60,000 euros for carrying out work for an NGO headed by Panzeri which was linked to the corruption allegations. Panzeri cuts deal for a lighter sentence Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is currently under arrest, will reveal information about the corruption scandal. Issuing a statement, the Belgian prosecutors said in return, Panzeri would get a limited sentence including imprisonment, a fine and confiscation of one million euros in assets. According to Belgian media, the former Italian MEP was under surveillance by Belgian intelligence services for at least a month before he was arrested. ALSO READ | European parliament plans to ban Qatari officials from premises The Italian government, meanwhile, arrested Panzeri's wife and daughter under a warrant issued by Belgium and authorised their extradition. Citing local media, the news agency AFP reported his wife is challenging the court order and their daughter is expected to follow suit. What is the European Parliament doing about the scandal? Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said that no stone will ne left unturned in fighting attempts to exert undue influence on lawmakers. On Monday (January 16), Metsola vowed to impose new rules to tackle foreign corruption, and also pledged to ensure "more transparency" and "accountability" - with a "first-step approach" that would include greater scrutiny of "those representing third countries and their interests". Amid threats of a strike by trade unions, the French government on Tuesday proposed raising the legal retirement age in the country to 64, from the current 62 by 2030.

Amid threats of a strike by trade unions, the French government on Tuesday proposed raising the legal retirement age in the country to 64, from the current 62 by 2030. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced the proposal and said extending the pension age will prevent the system from collapsing under the weight of deficits. "Leaving these deficits to grow would be irresponsible...It would lead inevitably to a massive increase in taxes, a reduction in pensions and would pose a threat to our pensions system," said Bonne. "I'm very aware that making changes to our retirement system is causing anxiety and fears among French people." Notably, the workers in France tend to retire much earlier than their European Union (EU) counterparts. The direct repercussion is that the French exchequer has to foot a bigger pension bill than most countries in the bloc. WATCH | France: March against pension reform, Macron govt temporarily withdraws pivotal age limit × In Germany, Denmark and Italy, the legal retirement age is 67 while it remains 66 in Spain and the United Kingdom. On average, workers in France retire at 62.3 years of age, according to EU data from 2019. They also receive 54.4 per cent of their last pay slip as pension on average. Comparatively, the average EU pension amount stands at 46.2 per cent. Thus, by launching the reforms, President Emmanuel Macron is attempting to rid the country's debt-ridden pension system by pushing the people to work longer. Read more: French President Macron says pension system reform will be implemented in 2023 Since coming to power in 2017, fixing France's complicated pension has been one of the top agendas of the Macron administration. However, the retaliation by the workers and trade unions forced him to take a step back whenever his government attempted to change the status quo. After years of delay, Macron appears steadfast in making the changes in the new year. Earlier this month in a television public address, Macron emphasised that 2023 will be the year when the much-delayed overhaul of the pension system takes place. “This year will indeed be that of a pension reform that aims to guarantee the equilibrium of our system in the years and decades to come,” said Macron. The road, however, may not be easy. After Tuesday's announcement, eight main trade unions have called for a day of strikes on January 19 to protest against the pension reform, according to local reports. A joint statement released by the trade unions said the one-day strike is expected to kick off a powerful movement for pensions in the long term". (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
