Britain’s newly elected Prime Minister Liz Truss has pledged that the United Kingdom will continue their financial support to Ukraine. Ahead of her first foreign trip as PM, Truss said that the UK will match the figures of 2022 and will also send both financial and artillery support to Ukraine.

Seventeen bodies found at the bottom of a medieval English well were most likely Jews who were murdered in an anti-Semitic massacre more than 800 years ago, scientists have revealed in a new study. The massacre took place in 1190 AD in the eastern city of Norwich. Notably, just decades prior to the incident, seeds had been planted for an "anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that persists up to the present day," they said in a new study.

The scientists used a host&nbsp;of techniques to solve the mystery, including analysing the oldest known Jewish genomes. The entire episode started in 2004, when construction workers were digging up land for a future shopping centre in Norwich. That is when they stumbled upon the remains of at least 17 people, six adults and 11 children, including three sisters, in the old well.&nbsp;

The bodies were buried at strange angles, some head-first, suggesting the possibility of violent death.

Ian Barnes, a geneticist at London's Natural History Museum, first started looking into the remains while working on the BBC documentary series "History Cold Case" in 2011.

"We first thought it more likely that they were the victims of some sort of plague, epidemic, famine, something like that," Barnes, one of the authors of the study published in the journal Current Biology this week, told AFP.&nbsp;

Using radiocarbon dating, the team narrowed down the date of the deaths to between 1161-1216 AD. DNA analysis of six of the victims found they were predisposed to certain genetic diseases.

A common ancestry was established after computer simulations showed that the frequency of these diseases was roughly the same for the Norwich victims as for modern Ashkenazi Jews. This would make them the oldest Jewish genomes ever analysed.

It also sheds light on a known historical event when the number of Ashkenazi Jews suddenly dwindled, called a population bottleneck, which causes such genetic variants to occur. The bottleneck was previously believed to have taken place between 500 to 800 years ago.

But Mark Thomas, a study co-author and geneticist at University College London, told AFP the new research "strongly suggests" that the bottleneck must have predated the Norwich victims, meaning it could have occurred hundreds of years earlier than thought.

Meanwhile, scientists also found that a young boy in the well had blues eyes and red hair and it is important to note here that anti-Semitic stereotypes at the time often involved red hair. "As we did more and more analysis, everything just kept getting more and more convincing," Barnes said.

Their analysis pointed to a single event, violence during anti-Semitic riots recorded in Norwich on February 6, 1190 AD.

Barnes said that "anti-Semitic feelings were riding high because plans were in place to conduct the Third Crusade".

Less than 50 years earlier, a local boy had been brutally murdered. The family of the boy, who was later dubbed William of Norwich, blamed his murder on local Jews. It became the first known version of the anti-Semitic "blood libel" myth, in which Jews are falsely accused of killing Christian boys to use their blood in rituals.

"This antisemitic conspiracy theory persists today, its origins lie within the soil of Norwich," tweeted Adam Rutherford, a geneticist at University College London.

"The bodies in the well present a unique opportunity to assess the roots of this contemporary racism."

Shares in the maker of Durex condoms and Dettol cleaning products tumbled more than 4 per cent&nbsp;on the news, with JP Morgan analysts citing Narasimhan's sudden departure just when investor confidence in the group's turnaround is improving.

"It was a surprise to find out Reckitt’s CEO is stepping down, having only been in the role for three years and just starting to receive some credibility," said Tineke Frikee, fund manager at Reckitt shareholder Waverton Investment Management.

"It is surprising that it is immediate, rather than serving his notice period ... a handover period between Laxman and a new permanent CEO replacement would have been preferred."

Narasimhan, 55, joined the company in September 2019 from PepsiCo and was the first external candidate to take the helm at Reckitt since it was formed in 1999.

He led the household goods maker through the pandemic, which boosted sales of its health and hygiene products, and as the company navigated a baby formula crisis in the United States.

He will be replaced by senior independent director Durante while the board "evaluates and selects the future leadership", Reckitt said in a statement.

Double-Whammy

"It's kind of a double whammy of uncertainty about what's ahead, given that (Narasimhan) was three years at the company and at a time when market conditions are tougher, especially for companies like Reckitt Benckiser, which are highly reliant on consumer spending," said Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Susannah Streeter.

Brazilian-Italian Durante previously led tobacco giant British American Tobacco (BAT) for eight years until 2019. He joined Reckitt's board in 2013.

The 66-year old will receive a salary of 1.1 million pounds ($1.3 million) as Reckitt CEO, the company said, adding that he is being appointed on a rolling contract with six months' notice on either side.

Reckitt, which also makes Nurofen tablets and Lysol cleaning products, will continue to implement its current strategy under Durante, the company added.

Narasimhan decided to leave for personal reasons and to relocate to the United States, having been approached with a new opportunity there, Reckitt said without elaborating.

He did not immediately respond to a request for comment via his LinkedIn account.

Chairman Chris Sinclair and the nomination committee have started the process to identify the "best&nbsp;long-term candidate to take Reckitt on its next phase of growth", the company said.

The British consumer goods group in July raised its annual revenue forecast after steep price increases helped the company to beat its second-quarter sales expectations.
