<p>Elisabeth Borne, the new Prime Minister, however, has denied any knowledge of the allegations surrounding Abad. She said that "there will be no impunity" in cases involving members of the new government once judicial authorities step in.</p>

<p>However, she failed to mention when during the legal proceedings would the removal of the government official will take place.</p>

<p>Opposition politicians have called for his immediate resignation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If I were prime minister, I would tell Damien Abad: 'I have no particular reason to believe the women are lying... While we wait for a decision from the judicial system, I wish for you not to be part of the government,'" said, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure while talking to France Inter radio.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sandrine Rousseau, a Green Party politician, has also called for Abad's removal.</p>

<p>Abad, who suffers from arthrogryposis, a rare physical disability that affects muscles and joints has vehemently denied the accusations. He claims that given his disability, he is physically incapable of committing the act.</p>

<p>He said that he had been previously been forced to make it clear that due to his disability "sexual act can only take place with the assistance and help" of his partner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the complainants in her allegations had said that she was unconscious when Abad raped her, however, the minister said that the claim he could "drug, carry, undress and rape an unconscious woman are inconceivable and abject."</p>

<p>French President Emmanuel&nbsp;Macron&nbsp;formally begins his&nbsp;second&nbsp;term&nbsp;in office on Saturday, maintaining suspense about his new government ahead of parliamentary elections next month that will shape his next five years in power.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 44-year-old scored a solid victory in April 24 presidential polls against far-right leader Marine Le Pen, but still needs a majority in parliament to be able to push through his domestic reform agenda. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The identity of&nbsp;Macron's new government is expected to set the tone for campaigning, with the president suggesting he intends to name only the&nbsp;second&nbsp;woman prime minister in modern French history.</p>

<p>"It's been decided, but no one knows who it is," a presidential advisor told AFP on condition of anonymity.</p>

<p>An announcement is expected early next week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Macron's Republic on the Move party has been renamed Renaissance ahead of the parliamentary polls on June 12 and 19, with several centrist and centre-right parties set to compete under the collective pro-Macron&nbsp;banner of "Together".</p>

<p>France's splintered left-wing parties have also agreed a tie-up under the leadership of former Trotskyist Jean-Luc Melenchon who has set his sights on a parliamentary majority to thwart&nbsp;Macron's plans.</p>

<p>"To go from around 60 MPs (in the current parliament) to a majority is highly improbable, but the dynamic created by the new union could mean they make major progress," Frederic Dabi, head of the Ifop polling group, told AFP this week.</p>

<p>His short-term&nbsp;domestic priority is expected to be tackling a cost-of-living crisis that dominated the presidential campaign due to sharp rises in energy prices and other goods linked to product shortages and the war in Ukraine.</p>

<p>In foreign policy, where&nbsp;Macron&nbsp;will have a free hand as president irrespective of the parliamentary result, he has promised to work to deepen the 27-member European Union while managing the fallout from the Ukraine conflict.</p>

<p>Macron&nbsp;has positioned himself as a key link to the Kremlin through his regular talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while also authorising weapons deliveries to Ukraine and offering the partly occupied country his full support.</p>

<p>Emmanuel Macron may have defeated Marine Le Pen in the 2022 French presidential elections, but he is not sitting on his laurels as preparations are underway for the parliamentary elections.</p>

<p>Macron’s party - La Republique en Marche – has decided to change its name to Renaissance ahead of the parliamentary elections which will take place in June. This is part of the party’s rebranding process as Macron look to secure a parliamentary majority in his second term in office.</p>

<p>The name Renaissance meant “always choosing enlightenment over obscurantism”, its secretary general, Stanislas Guérini, told a press conference in Paris according to a Reuters report.</p>

However, this time, Macron will face a tough challenge against the newly-formed alliance of Jean-Luc Melenchon and Marine Le Pen.</p>

<p>According to a report in The Guardian, the change of name can also be a show of intent from Macron’s party to regain lost ground in local government – where they have not done much.</p>

Majority of French people do not want Macron's party to have majority in parliament elections: Opinion poll

<p>You probably breathed a deep sigh of relief when you heard that Emmanuel Macron trounced Marine Le Pen by a 17-point margin in Sunday’s French presidential election.</p>

<p>A Le Pen victory would have been a boon to Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orban and Steve Bannon and a disaster for NATO, Europe and France.</p>

<p>The centre held, thank God — because Macron&nbsp;<em>governed from the centre.&nbsp;</em>He was hated by the far left and the far right and never entirely pleased those closer to the centre.</p>

<p>But he also became the first president to be reelected in France in 20 years.</p>

<p>There’s a lesson in that for the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress, especially when it comes to immigration.</p>

<p>It has become an article of progressive faith in recent years that efforts to control immigration are presumptively racist.</p>

<p>A border wall is “a monument to white supremacy,” according to a piece published in Bloomberg. The “remain in Mexico” policy is “racist, cruel and inhumane,” according to the Justice Action Center. An essay published by the Brookings Institution calls U.S. immigration policy “a classic, unappreciated example of structural racism.”</p>

<p>It wasn’t long ago that Bernie Sanders was an avowed restrictionist on the view that immigration depresses working-class wages. Did that position make him a racist?</p>

<p>The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, where I once worked, used to make the case for open borders with Mexico. Were we left-wing progressives?</p>

<p>People of goodwill should be able to take different and nuanced views on immigration — and change their minds about it — without being tagged as morally deficient.</p>

<p>But that’s no longer how it works in progressive circles. The results are policy choices that are bad for the country and worse for Democrats and are an unbidden gift to the far right.</p>

<p>The issue is now acute with the Biden administration simultaneously seeking to end the Trump administration’s “remain in Mexico” policy in a case before the Supreme Court while accepting a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to let the use of Title 42, which allowed border authorities to expel illegal immigrants as a public health measure, expire May 23.</p>

<p>There’s not much doubt as to what will happen if the administration gets its way: An already straining southern border will burst. In fiscal year 2020 there were 646,822 “enforcement actions” at the border. In 2021 the number was a little shy of 2 million. Without the authority of Title 42, under which 62% of expulsions took place in 2021, the number of migrants being released in the United States will increase drastically.</p>

<p>You don’t have to be opposed to immigration as a general matter to have serious doubts about the administration’s course.</p>

<p>Is there a practical and available legal alternative to regulating immigration through Title 42 enforcement? Where is the logic of ending Title 42 even as the administration seeks to extend mask mandates because the pandemic is far from over?</p>

<p>Given housing shortages, how much capacity is there to absorb the next wave of migrants? Even if an overwhelming majority of migrants are merely seeking a better life, what system is there to find those with less honourable intentions?</p>

<p>More to the point: What does the administration’s utter failure at effective control of the border say about its commitment to enforcing the rule of law?</p>

<p>To raise such questions should be an invitation to propose balanced and practical immigration legislation and try to win over moderate Republicans.</p>

<p>Instead it tends to invite cheap accusations of racism, along with policy paralysis in the White House.</p>

<p>As Politico reported last week, some think the administration’s secret policy is to call for an end to Title 42 to satisfy progressives while crossing fingers that the courts continue it — which a federal judge did on Monday, at least temporarily.</p>

<p>Leading from behind Trump-appointed judges is probably not what Americans elected Joe Biden to do.</p>

<p>Which brings us back to the example of France. When Jean-Marie Le Pen made his first presidential bid on an anti-immigration platform in 1974, he took 0.75% of the ballot in the first round — fewer than 200,000 votes. When his daughter Marine ran on a similar platform this year, she took 41.5% in the second round, or more than 13 million. The Le Pens are thoroughgoing bigots.</p>

<p>But decades of pretending that only bigots had worries about immigration only made their brand of politics stronger.</p>

<p>As president, Macron tacked right on immigration — not to weaken France’s historic position as an open society, friendly to newcomers, but rather to save it. A Le Pen victory would have been a boon to Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orban and Steve Bannon and a disaster for NATO, Europe and France. The centre held, thank God — because Macron governed from the centre. He was hated by the far left and the far right and never entirely pleased those closer to the centre. But he also became the first president to be reelected in France in 20 years. There’s a lesson in that for the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress, especially when it comes to immigration. It has become an article of progressive faith in recent years that efforts to control immigration are presumptively racist. A border wall is “a monument to white supremacy,” according to a piece published in Bloomberg. The “remain in Mexico” policy is “racist, cruel and inhumane,” according to the Justice Action Center. An essay published by the Brookings Institution calls U.S. immigration policy “a classic, unappreciated example of structural racism.” It wasn’t long ago that Bernie Sanders was an avowed restrictionist on the view that immigration depresses working-class wages. Did that position make him a racist? The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, where I once worked, used to make the case for open borders with Mexico. Were we left-wing progressives? People of goodwill should be able to take different and nuanced views on immigration — and change their minds about it — without being tagged as morally deficient. But that’s no longer how it works in progressive circles. The results are policy choices that are bad for the country and worse for Democrats and are an unbidden gift to the far right. The issue is now acute with the Biden administration simultaneously seeking to end the Trump administration’s “remain in Mexico” policy in a case before the Supreme Court while accepting a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to let the use of Title 42, which allowed border authorities to expel illegal immigrants as a public health measure, expire May 23. There’s not much doubt as to what will happen if the administration gets its way: An already straining southern border will burst. In fiscal year 2020 there were 646,822 “enforcement actions” at the border. In 2021 the number was a little shy of 2 million. Without the authority of Title 42, under which 62% of expulsions took place in 2021, the number of migrants being released in the United States will increase drastically. You don’t have to be opposed to immigration as a general matter to have serious doubts about the administration’s course. Is there a practical and available legal alternative to regulating immigration through Title 42 enforcement? Where is the logic of ending Title 42 even as the administration seeks to extend mask mandates because the pandemic is far from over? Given housing shortages, how much capacity is there to absorb the next wave of migrants? Even if an overwhelming majority of migrants are merely seeking a better life, what system is there to find those with less honourable intentions? More to the point: What does the administration’s utter failure at effective control of the border say about its commitment to enforcing the rule of law? To raise such questions should be an invitation to propose balanced and practical immigration legislation and try to win over moderate Republicans. Instead it tends to invite cheap accusations of racism, along with policy paralysis in the White House. As Politico reported last week, some think the administration’s secret policy is to call for an end to Title 42 to satisfy progressives while crossing fingers that the courts continue it — which a federal judge did on Monday, at least temporarily. Leading from behind Trump-appointed judges is probably not what Americans elected Joe Biden to do. Which brings us back to the example of France. When Jean-Marie Le Pen made his first presidential bid on an anti-immigration platform in 1974, he took 0.75% of the ballot in the first round — fewer than 200,000 votes. When his daughter Marine ran on a similar platform this year, she took 41.5% in the second round, or more than 13 million. The Le Pens are thoroughgoing bigots. But decades of pretending that only bigots had worries about immigration only made their brand of politics stronger. As president, Macron tacked right on immigration — not to weaken France’s historic position as an open society, friendly to newcomers, but rather to save it. Convincing victory disguises steep challenges for Macron

<p>Polling firms for French television channels based on a sample of the vote count projected that Macron was set to win 57.6-58.2 per cent of the vote compared with Le Pen on 41.8-42.4 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Important to note that the outcome is expected to be confirmed by official results overnight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Marine Le Pen said that the result is in "itself an earth-shattering victory (for us)." She added, "I fear that the five-year term that is about to begin will not break with the brutal methods of the previous one."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In order to avoid the monopolisation of power by a few, more than ever I will pursue my commitment to France and the French people with the energy, perseverance and affection that you know me for," she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The French police said that they have managed to arrest the attacker and the priest is out of danger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>France's Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin tweeted that priest's injuries were not life-threatening. He tweeted, "There has been an attack this morning at a church in Nice. The priest was injured, but not seriously."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tweet added, "Our support to all the parishioners, and our gratitude to the law enforcement agents who rapidly arrested the attacker."&nbsp;</p>

<p>A French politician Eric Ciotti said the priest was stabbed "several times" inside the church. Fox News reported that the priest has been identified as Father Christophe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ciotti is a local French politician representing the 1st constituency of Alpes-Maritimes in the National Assembly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per media reports, the French cable channel BFM TV quoted police as saying the suspect was a 31-year-old French man and there was no suspicion of terror as being the motive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Estrosi said the suspect was known to have purchased the knife several days ago. "I want to thank the emergency services and the police for their exemplary work, and I send all my thoughts to the faithful of the parish," Estrosi tweeted.&nbsp;</p>
