<p>President Joe Biden will host his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the White House on December 1 for the first full-scale state visit of his administration, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday.</p>

<p>The visit will "underscore the deep and enduring relationship between the United States and France, our oldest ally," Jean-Pierre told reporters at the White House.&nbsp;</p>

<p>State visits, which feature more pomp and ceremony than the frequent bilateral meetings hosted by US presidents for foreign leaders, have not taken place so far during Biden's presidency, which Jean-Pierre attributed to Covid pandemic restrictions.</p>

<p>Asked why Macron had been chosen for the honour ahead of other US allies, Jean-Pierre said "we deeply value our relationship with France."</p>

<p>The link between the two countries is "founded on shared democratic values, economic ties, and defense and security cooperation," she said.</p>

<p>Relations between Paris and Washington hit a major crisis last year when Australia abruptly announced it was ditching a contract to buy conventional French submarines in favour of a US nuclear-powered submarine deal.</p>

<p>The US-Australia deal was part of the newly launched AUKUS security partnership, also including Britain, which Washington sees as part of its strategy to contain China in the Asia-Pacific region.</p>

<p>However, the French government was furious, accusing Australia of "lying" and recalling its ambassadors to Canberra and Washington.</p>

<p>However, tensions have since smoothed over, with Macron emerging as a key European partner for Biden in the response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine and the unprecedented Western effort to help Ukrainian troops.</p>

<p>A source in the French presidency said the visit, culminating with a state dinner, will "underline the deep and enduring relations," including on "close cooperation in defense and security areas."</p>

<p>Biden and Macron met most recently at the United Nations General Assembly last week in New York and have also had "multiple conversations" over the last year and a half, Jean-Pierre said.</p>

<p>For the unversed, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located near the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula. It has six of Ukraine's 15 reactors and is capable of supplying power for four million homes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zaporizhzhia NPP is Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which was captured by Russia in March, but is still run by Ukrainian technicians.</p>

The statement read: "Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that the systematic shelling of the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by the Ukrainian military created the danger of a large-scale catastrophe that could lead to radiation contamination of vast territories."</p>

<p>The ongoing conflict&nbsp;has&nbsp;renewed fears that the invasion could result in damage to nuclear reactors. It could trigger another emergency like the 1986 Chernobyl accident, the world's worst nuclear disaster. Experts have claimed that if the nuclear plant blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl.</p>

"There are still obstacles to the mentioned Russian exports that do not contribute to the solution of problems related to ensuring global food security," the Kremlin said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This remark comes after last month in Istanbul, Russia and Ukraine signed landmark deals with Turkey and the United Nations that opened secure corridors for grain exports to leave Ukraine's Black Sea ports. &nbsp;</p>

<p>A similar agreement signed at the same time allowed Russia to export its agricultural products and fertiliser despite Western sanctions over Moscow's military intervention in Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AFP reports that on the 40th anniversary of France's repeal of a statute discriminating against homosexuals from the World War II era, Borne told an audience that the new envoy will coordinate the foreign ministry's policies and serve as "France's voice" for the advancement of LGBTQ rights.</p>

<p>French government led by President Emmanuel Macron has suffered its first legislative defeat in parliament. Macron's ruling party has lost its majority in the parliament last month. France's National Assembly has rejected a proposal that would have given government powers to demand proof of vaccination or negative COVID test from travellers when they enter France.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The proposal was opposed by 219 lawmakers while 195 supported it. All major opposition parties the far-right National Rally (RN), the hard left LFI, and rightwing Republicans (LR) united against the minority government.</p>

<p>"The circumstances oblige the government to listen to opposition parties which at the moment it has a few difficulties in doing," top Republicans MP Olivier Marleix told Sud Radio on Wednesday morning.</p>

<p>French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne condemned the obstruction. Allies stressed how the so-called "extremes", far left and far right, teamed together.</p>

<p>"Clear collusion between the extremes, each one applauding the other," MP Maud Bregeon from Macron's Republic on the Move wrote on Twitter alongside a video.</p>

<p>Fellow ruling party Remy Rebeyrotte criticised "an atmosphere like a football match" during the debate where speakers were routinely shouted down. Mthilde Panot, most senior MP in the hard-left LFI party compared ruling party MPs as 'playmobils'. It is an insult that equated them to inanimate toys.<br />

<p>The reports of an alleged secret deal between online transport company Uber and French President Emmanuel Macron have sparked a huge response from the opposition parties in France. According to an investigation by leading media outlets based on leaked files, Macron had a “secret deal” with the company during his tenure as economic minister between 2014 and 2016. A report in French daily Le Monde claimed that it was Macron’s ministry that paved the path for Uber to establish its dominance in France with the help of "ready-made" amendments. In the aftermath of the report, a number of opposition deputies have criticised Macron and asked for thorough investigation.</p>

<p>Communist Party leader Fabien Roussel also described the report as "damning revelations about the active role played by Emmanuel Macron, then minister, to facilitate the development of Uber in France. "Against all our rules, all our social rights and against workers' rights," he tweeted.</p>

French elections: Emmanuel Macron ask voters for 'solid majority' in polls

<p>During their crucial visit to Kyiv on Thursday (June 16), the European leaders backed Ukraine's bid to be accepted as a candidate for the European Union membership. French President Emmanuel Macron told a joint press conference with Italian and German leaders that "all four of us support the status of immediate candidate for accession."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was present during the press conference, promised the nation was ready to put in the work to become a fully-fledged EU member. He said that amid Russia's invasion of the country, the Ukrainians have already proved themselves worthy of candidate status.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Friday, the European Commission will meet to give its official opinion on Ukraine's formal bid for EU candidacy. The bid must be approved by all 27 member states to get finalised.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Macron praised Ukrainian "heroism" against Moscow's invasion. "It's here, among other places, that the Ukrainians stopped the Russian army descending onto Kyiv," the French leader said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance was on track to win the largest number of seats in parliament after the first round of voting on Sunday, projections from polling firms showed, though it remains unclear if it will obtain a majority.</p>

<p>His Ensemble (Together) alliance was projected by four firms to win between 225 and 310 seats in the second round of voting on June 19, with a new leftwing coalition finishing second, for a projected 150 to 220 seats.</p>

<p>Macron would need to secure at least 289 of the National Assembly's 577 seats to have a majority for pushing through legislation during his second five-year term.</p>

<p>Both groups scored around 25-26 percent of the popular vote that saw fewer than half of registered voters cast a ballot, resulting in record-low turnout projected at 52-53 percent.</p>

<p>The far-right National Rally headed by Marine Le Pen, who lost to Macron in the presidential vote in April, got an estimated 19 percent of the vote, which could result in 10 to 45 seats, according to the projections.</p>
