Musk mocks Brazil's supreme court judge on X, compares him to toilet paper

Elon Musk and Tesla have successfully fended off a federal lawsuit accusing them of defrauding investors through manipulation of the cryptocurrency. Dogecoin US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein issued the dismissal on Thursday night in Manhattan, ruling in favor of Musk and his electric vehicle company. The lawsuit, brought by investors, alleged that Musk used Twitter posts, a 2021 appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live," and other promotional activities to drive up Dogecoin’s value and then sell it for profit, causing significant financial losses.

The investors claimed that Musk's activities—including a notable increase in Dogecoin's price by over 36,000%—were part of a scheme to manipulate the market. They pointed to an April 2023 incident when Musk’s decision to replace Twitter’s logo with the Dogecoin Shiba Inu emblem resulted in a 30% surge in Dogecoin’s price, which he allegedly exploited for profit.

Judge Hellerstein ruled that Musk's statements about Dogecoin, including his claims that it could become the "currency of Earth" or be used to buy Tesla vehicles, were mere "aspirational puffery" rather than factual representations susceptible to falsification. The judge determined that these statements could not be reasonably relied upon by investors for a securities fraud claim. Furthermore, he found the claims of market manipulation and insider trading to be insufficiently detailed.

The lawsuit, which sought USD 258 billion in damages, was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled. Investors had amended their complaint multiple times over the past two years. Musk’s legal team argued that his tweets about Dogecoin were harmless and often whimsical. They also disputed the existence of any suspicious trading activities or ownership of wallets linked to Dogecoin transactions.

In response to the dismissal, Musk’s lawyer Alex Spiro commented, “It’s a very good day for Dogecoin.” The plaintiffs’ attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The case is Gorog et al v. Musk et al, US District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 22-05037.

Elon Musk now has a new question for his employees in X amid pending promotion: 'Justify your eligibility'

Elon Musk took no time to introduce the blue checkmark scheme, called Twitter Blue after he took over the social media company in 2022. While he had dreams of gathering a lot of money from it, a new book claims he instantly regretted introducing it.

Under the scheme, he planned to award a blue tick mark to anyone who was willing to pay a fee. These users will ideally be termed as "verified users", even though their identity has never actually been verified.

An upcoming book titled Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter details how the scheme fell flat and instead of adding to the bank, aggravated the company's financial crisis. Reporters Ryan Mac and Kate Conger state in the book that the blue tick mark became a hassle as its rolling out coincided with the US midterm elections.

The 2022 midterm elections happened on November 8, and a day later Musk introduced Twitter Blue and started charging people for it. However, problems began when several accounts showing as verified started posing as celebrities, politicians, companies and more. Challenges to the EV Market: A Smaller Market Ahead? Trump’s scepticism about the future of electric vehicles extends beyond tax incentives. He criticised the Biden administration's stricter emissions standards, which require automakers to increase production of EVs and plug-in hybrids. Trump argued that these regulations are pushing the industry towards a "much smaller market" for EVs due to ongoing concerns about high costs and battery range limitations. This perspective contrasts sharply with current trends, where many automakers are rapidly expanding their EV line-ups in response to global demand and regulatory pressures. If Trump were to relax these regulations, it could slow the momentum of EV adoption in the U.S. and alter the competitive landscape of the global automotive industry. Trade Policies: Tariffs and Domestic Production Beyond the EV market, Trump reiterated his commitment to reshaping U.S. trade policies, particularly concerning the automotive industry. He vowed to impose new tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico for U.S. consumers, a move aimed at discouraging automakers from outsourcing production. "If you put tariffs on those cars, they're going to make it here," Trump asserted, emphasising his desire to boost domestic manufacturing. Trump also expressed openness to foreign automakers, including Chinese companies, building vehicles in the U.S. "We’re going to give incentives, and if China and other countries want to come here and sell the cars, they’re going to build plants here," he said, highlighting a strategy to create jobs and stimulate the U.S. economy. Big Tech in Trump's Crosshairs: Google and TikTok Trump took a firm stance against Alphabet's Google, describing the tech giant as operating like the "Wild West." While he stopped short of calling for the company to be broken up, he hinted at significant penalties, stating, "They're going to have to pay a great price." Trump also addressed the ongoing debate over TikTok, a popular short-video app owned by China’s ByteDance. Despite previous threats to ban the app, Trump acknowledged the complexities involved, particularly concerning free speech. He suggested that ByteDance might eventually sell TikTok’s U.S. assets, a move that could resolve the concerns surrounding the app’s ownership and data security. A Complex Road Ahead for U.S. Policy As Donald Trump campaigns for a return to the presidency, his comments signal a potential shift in U.S. policy across several sectors, from electric vehicles to trade and technology. His scepticism towards EV incentives, coupled with his willingness to engage with influential figures like Elon Musk, suggests that a Trump administration could take a markedly different approach to the issues shaping the future of the American economy. Whether these ideas resonate with voters and industry leaders remains to be seen, but the implications for U.S. policy and global markets are significant. (Inputs from Reuters)

Deepfakes of pop star Taylor Swift and US presidential candidate Kamala Harris in lingerie. Republican presidential contender Donald Trump riding a plane to the World Trade Center, evoking the 9/11 terror attack. Hitler memes using Disney characters. These are some of the images thrown up by Elon Musk's new AI chat app Grok, which rolled out its text-to-image tool on Wednesday (Aug 14). This is raising concerns about the proper use of AI, particularly its text-to-image apps which are all the rage these days. Grok, the AI chat app by Musk, is a rival to ChatGPT and appears to have no checking mechanism that would refuse to execute prompts for images on controversial, explicit or offensive subjects. According to a report in The Guardian, the offensive images generated by Grok included Prophet Muhammad holding a bomb as well as lingerie photos featuring Taylor Swift, Kamala Harris and Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Republican presidential candidate admitted that his voice was distorted but blamed it on technical issues.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump thanked Musk for a ‘strong endorsement’ but blamed the distortion of his voice on the “complexity of modern day equipment, and cellphone technology.”

“Trump got hit by the CIA lisp gun” posted a third.

In an interesting study, a job interview question has been found to have the potential to detect liars and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also been using this question.

Elon Musk has a classic job interview question, experts say THIS can catch liars

The United Auto Workers (UAW) Union has taken formal action against former President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, filing complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) over alleged attempts to intimidate workers. The union claims that both Trump and Musk made statements suggesting they would fire employees engaged in protected concerted activities, including striking.

The controversy stems from a two-hour conversation between Trump and Musk broadcast on the social media platform X on Monday. During the exchange, Trump praised Musk's cost-cutting abilities, saying, "You're the greatest cutter. I mean, I look at what you do. You walk in, you just say: 'You want to quit?' They go on strike - I won't mention the name of the company - but they go on strike. And you say: 'That's okay, you're all gone.'" Musk chuckled but did not directly respond to Trump's comments.

UAW President Shawn Fain strongly condemned the remarks, stating, "Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. It's disgusting, illegal, and totally predictable from these two clowns." The union emphasised that under federal law, workers cannot be fired for going on strike, and threatening to do so violates the National Labor Relations Act.

The complaints come at a politically charged time, with the UAW having recently endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election. The union is encouraging its nearly 400,000 members to support Harris over Trump, particularly in battleground states like Michigan that could prove decisive in November.

In response to the UAW's action, Musk took to social media to criticise Fain, alluding to past union presidents who were imprisoned for bribery and corruption. Meanwhile, Trump's campaign dismissed the complaint as a "frivolous lawsuit" and a "shameless political stunt," asserting that Trump's proposed policies, including a 100% tariff on Chinese imports, would strengthen the industry.

The NLRB, which has limited power to punish unlawful labour practices, could potentially order employers to cease and desist from such conduct and post notices informing workers of their rights. However, the process often takes years to resolve. Wilma Liebman, former NLRB chair under President Obama, suggested that the UAW's action serves both political and organising purposes beyond seeking specific remedies.

This is not the first time Musk has faced scrutiny from the NLRB. His companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, have been involved in multiple labour disputes. In March, a U.S. appeals court upheld an NLRB decision that Musk illegally threatened Tesla employees in a 2018 tweet regarding unionisation and stock options.

The UAW's complaints highlight ongoing tensions between labour groups and high-profile figures in business and politics. Sean O'Brien, president of the Teamsters union, characterised the notion of firing workers for organising and striking as "economic terrorism."

As the 2024 presidential race heats up, the role of union support remains crucial. In the 2020 election, 62% of Michigan households with a union member voted for Joe Biden, contributing to his victory in the state. The UAW's recent actions underscore the continued importance of labour issues in shaping political allegiances and electoral outcomes.

UAW files labour complaints against Trump and Musk

JK Rowling always has a way to find herself in the eye of a raging controversy and this time its related to Algerian boxer and newly crowned champion Imane Khelif who won at recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024. After Imane won, many celebrities including JK Rowling and X owner Elon Musk were named in a criminal complaint over alleged “acts of aggravated cyber harassment”.

Reported by Variety, Nabil Boudi who is a Paris-based attorney of Khelif confirmed that both Elon Musk and JK Rowling have been mentioned in a complaint over online hate directed towards the Olympic champion.

What is the lawsuit for?

The lawsuit was filed against X, which under French law means that it was filed against unknown persons. That “ensure[s] that the ‘prosecution has all the latitude to be able to investigate against all people,” including those who may have written hateful messages under pseudonyms, said Boudi. The complaint mentions famously controversial figures.

Also since the complaint is against X, celebrities like Donald Trump will also be questioned because he posted on X against Imane’s win.

Imane Khelif won the Olympic gold medal in the women’s 66 kilogram boxing competition. Her participation and then subsequent win was a topic of discussion as people mentioned about gender eligibility. Despite being born female and not identifying as transgender or intersex — and being backed by the International Olympic Committee, who asserted “scientifically, this is not a man fighting a woman”, Imane Khelif was accused of cheating her way to win.

What was the furore against Imane Khelif's win? Netizens targetted the Olympian and called her ineligible because she looked “manly” and “masculine” than her counterparts. Controversy erupted after Italy’s Angela Carini pulled out of her Round of 16 bout against Khelif after only 46 seconds. She cried and said that she had “never been hit so hard” in her life. What is the DDoS attack that halted Elon Musk's interview with Donald Trump on X?

Elon Musk's highly anticipated interview with former President Donald Trump commenced with the conversation by asking Trump about the assassination attempt at his Pennsylvania rally last month.

"I didn't know I had that much blood," Trump remarked about the shooting, adding that it was the "best alternative you could think of," considering he wasn't more seriously injured.

Trump further claimed that he was targeted because of his stance on immigration.

The former president said that he would surely go back to Butler, Pennsylvania in October, where he survived an assassination attempt on July 13.
