Elon Musk endorses Trump, but employees favor Harris with donations

Elon Musk

Tesla, SpaceX, and X CEO, Elon Musk has come out in support of former President Donald Trump in the next presidential elections, but employees at his companies are financially backing Biden’s opponent, Kamala Harris. Information retrieved from OpenSecrets, a nonprofit organisation which aims at revealing the US campaign finance, showed that Tesla workers have contributed USD 42,824 to Harris against Trump’s USD 24,840. Investment of SpaceX reveals that donation made to Harris is USD 34,526 while the donation made to Trump is USD 7,652. Donations made by the workers at X have donated USD 13,213 to Harris and donated less than USD 500 to Trump.

Even these numbers can be considered low in the general context of campaign financing; still, they show a rather sharp split between Musk’s political position and the attitudes of the employees. Musk who has been very much vocal on his discontent against left-leaning ideologies referred to such ideologies as a ‘woke mind virus’ has on several occasions offered his support to Trump on his Twitter handle.

Musk did not respond to invitations for his comment. In the past it provided support to candidate Joe Biden in the past years 2020 but switched its political affiliations. Trump has said that if he were to be elected on the November 5, then Musk would be appointed to lead an efficiency commission in the government.

The OpenSecrets data includes employees, owners and their direct relatives’ contributions because federal campaign finance law does not allow corporate contributions to federal campaigns. For instance, it is worth to mention that most of the employees of Musk are located in California, where Democrats have always been dominating.

Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management and a Tesla shareholder pointed out that Musk intends to move X and SpaceX headquarters to Texas because of a California gender identification policy that the latter refers to as the ‘last straw,’ but this may reduce his firms’ choices of the best employees in California.

This dynamic at the core of Musk’s enterprises will be elaborated as the political donors differentiate themselves depending on the common political party they support selectively from the candidates.
