Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has swept to a third term as Egypt's president in an election where he faced no serious challengers, election authorities said on Monday, and he called the vote a rejection of the "inhumane war" in neighbouring Gaza.

The election, in which he took 89.6% of the vote according to the National Election Authority, was held as Egypt struggles with a slow-burning economic crisis and tries to manage the risk of spillover from the war adjacent to Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

Some voters said the eruption of conflict in Gaza had encouraged them to vote for Sisi, who has long presented himself as a bulwark of stability in a volatile region - an argument that has also proved effective with Gulf and Western allies providing financial support to his government.

The election featured three other candidates, none of them high profile. The most prominent potential challenger halted his run in October, saying officials and thugs had targeted his supporters - accusations dismissed by the election Authority.

The tomb is a medium-sized shaft tomb adorned with an array of inscriptions, artwork, and texts. Notably, its northern wall features a series of spells designed to safeguard against snake bites. During this era, venomous snakes were a constant threat, and these spells were crucial for protection. Egypt will treat badly wounded Palestinians after letting them into the country through the Rafah crossing, AFP reported Wednesday (Nov 1). The announcement from Egypt’s medical and security forces came Tuesday as Israel continues pounding Gaza with full force, which has so far resulted in the death of more than 8,500 people, including 3,500 children. The border authority in Hamas-ruled Gaza earlier said that Egypt has allowed accommodating at least 81 of the most badly wounded Palestinians. All of them will cross into Egypt through Rafah starting Wednesday, the only passage not controlled by Israel. Egypt to build special field hospital As per media reports, Egypt is building a special field hospital, with an area of 1,300 square metres (about 14,000 square feet), where these Palestinians will be taken care of. The hospital is being built in the city of Sheikh Zuweid in northern Sinai, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Rafah. Watch: Gaza siege triggers rise in anti-antisemitism × "Medical teams will be present tomorrow (Wednesday) at the crossing to examine the cases coming (from Gaza) as soon as they arrive... and determine the hospitals they will be sent to," a medical official in Egypt's city of El Arish was quoted as saying by AFP. Israeli strike on refugee camp The decision came after an Israeli strike hit a densely-populated refugee camp in Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least 50 Palestinians and a Hamas leader, as reported in the international media. Israeli tanks have been active in Gaza for at least four days following weeks of air bombardments in retaliation for an attack by Palestinian Hamas militants on mostly Israeli civilians on Oct. 7 and the taking of more than 200 hostages. "He was very important, I would say even pivotal in the planning and the execution of the October 7 attack against Israel from the northeastern parts of the Gaza Strip," said IDF spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus. Hamas, in a separate statement, claimed more than 400 people had died in the Jabalia strikes, although it could not be verified by WION independently. Six injured as explosions rock Egyptian Red Sea towns, Israel blames Houthi rebels

It's been more than two weeks since the war between Israel and Hamas began. In Africa though, the demonstrations have had a mixed bowl of support for Palestinians being bombarded by Israel and some African leaders like Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi being accused of piggybacking on the demos for political gain.

It took 200 years for scientists to find secret hidden chambers in this ancient crumbling pyramid

The US presidential hopeful Nikki Haley made a strong point when she asked the Islamic countries why they are not opening up their gates for Palestinian civilians from Gaza who want to flee their homes amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

"We should care about the Palestinian citizens, especially the innocent ones because they didn't ask for this. But where are the Arab countries? Where are they? Where is Qatar? Where is Lebanon? Where is Jordan? Where is Egypt? Do you know we give Egypt over a billion dollars a year? Why aren't they opening the gates? Why aren't they taking the Palestinians?" Haley told CNN in an interview.

She claimed that the Arab nations are not allowing the Palestinians because they know they "can't vet them" and they don't want "Hamas in their neighbourhood," asserting that "if Arab nations don't want them, then why would Israel? "

Haley also said that Hamas is going to do "everything they can" to not let Palestinians leave, because "they want them all to die". She alleged that "one, they want to use them as human shields, but, two, they want to blame Israel and show images of dead children and say, look at what Israel did".

Those who are stuck in Gaza are currently in a dire state, in the absence of basic needs such as food, clean water, electricity, and medicines. So, what's the way ahead?

Also read: Israel vs Hamas war | A look at firepower in Israeli arsenal

What are the options if Palestinians leave Gaza?

Ever since the conflict began, the future of the 2.3 million Gaza residents became uncertain. They have fled their homes, while still staying inside Gaza, a small piece of land wedged between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.

Egypt is the only Arab state to share a border with Gaza, and Jordan is next to the West Bank - but both nations have warned against Palestinians being forced off their land.

Now the world is talking about the fate of Palestinian refugees as it has become one of the thorniest issues in the decades-long conflict.

But the neighbours are not ready. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi recently said that the current war is also an "attempt to push the civilian inhabitants to... migrate to Egypt".

Jordan's King Abdullah II gave a similar message, as he said, "No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt."

Jordanian King also warned "against any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians from all Palestinian territories or cause their internal displacement," calling for preventing a spillover of the crisis into neighbouring countries and the exacerbation of the refugee issue.

Also read: Revisiting Israel-Palestine historical conflict amid new escalation by Hamas

Fear of permanent displacement

The issue underlines the fears that the conflict in Gaza could result in a new wave of permanent displacement from the land where Palestinians hope to establish a future state.

Some 700,000 Palestinians, almost half the Arab population of what was British-ruled Palestine, were dispossessed and displaced in the 1948 war around Israel's creation. Palestinians refer to the event as the Nakba, Arabic for "catastrophe".

El-Sissi even said "this is the cause of all causes, the cause of all Arabs. It is important that the (Palestinian) people remain steadfast and present on their land."

In the 1967 Mideast war, when Israel seized the West Bank and Gaza Strip, 300,000 more Palestinians fled, mostly into Jordan.

Many entered the neighbouring Arab states where they or many of their descendants remain. However, many still live in refugee camps.

After the fighting in the 1948 war stopped, Israel refused to allow refugees to return home.

Since then, Israel has refused Palestinian demands for the return of refugees as part of a peace deal, claiming that it would threaten Israel's Jewish majority.

Now, Arab nations fear that the situation will happen again and that a large Palestinian refugee population from Gaza will end up staying for good.

The Hamas worry

Another burning issue is Hamas, the Palestinian militant group which is designated as a terror organisation by many countries. The ongoing conflict began when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Oct 7, killing over 1,000 people and taking around 200 as hostages.

Egypt says a mass exodus from Gaza would bring Hamas or other Palestinian militants onto its soil. That might be destabilising in Sinai, where Egypt’s military fought for years against Islamic militants and at one point accused Hamas of backing them.

Since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, Egypt has helped maintain a blockade of the strip, largely sealing off its border and imposing tight controls over the passage of goods and people through Rafah.

El-Sissi even warned about the wrecking of Egypt and Israel's 1979 peace deal. He said that with the presence of Palestinian militants, Sinai "would become a base for attacks on Israel. Israel would have the right to defend itself ... and would strike Egyptian territory".

He added that "the peace which we have achieved would vanish from our hands" and "all for the sake of the idea of eliminating the Palestinian cause".

Also read: Israel vs Hamas war | A look at firepower in Israeli arsenal What are the options if Palestinians leave Gaza? Jordan's King Abdullah II gave a similar message, as he said, "No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt." Jordanian King also warned "against any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians from all Palestinian territories or cause their internal displacement," calling for preventing a spillover of the crisis into neighbouring countries and the exacerbation of the refugee issue. Also read: Revisiting Israel-Palestine historical conflict amid new escalation by Hamas Fear of permanent displacement The issue underlines the fears that the conflict in Gaza could result in a new wave of permanent displacement from the land where Palestinians hope to establish a future state. It is important that the (Palestinian) people remain steadfast and present on their land." In the 1967 Mideast war, when Israel seized the West Bank and Gaza Strip, 300,000 more Palestinians fled, mostly into Jordan. Also read: How was Israel formed? The nation's history can be traced back to the Iron Age Watch: Will Israel invade Gaza? Egypt allows aid, but 'no refugees' × The Hamas worry Another burning issue is Hamas, the Palestinian militant group which is designated as a terror organisation by many countries. China to work with ‘good friend’ Egypt to bring peace to West Asia, says Xi

The Rafah border crossing, located at the southern end of the Gaza Strip on the border with Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, holds immense significance for the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza.

It represents their primary potential exit point and serves as the territory's sole remaining link to the outside world. Under a 2007 agreement with Israel, Egypt controls the crossing, and any supplies entering Gaza through Rafah require Israeli approval.

Challenges of leaving Gaza

For the majority of Gazans, leaving the 365 square kilometre territory is exceedingly difficult. While Rafah offers the possibility of exiting Gaza, the reality is that most Gazans have never left their home region. Getting permission to depart is a complex and rigorous process.

Rafah: A tightly controlled crossing

On the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing lies the area of Rafah, a mix of city and farmland. Over the past decade, this region has experienced conflict between the Egyptian military and jihadist militants.

In an effort to prevent civilians and militants from returning to the area, the Egyptian military essentially razed large parts of Rafah.

Why Egypt closed the crossing?

Egypt has historically imposed tight restrictions on the Rafah crossing and has kept it closed during previous Israeli military operations in Gaza, including in 2021, 2014, and 2008.

Since 2013, during a period of heightened conflict between the Egyptian military and jihadists in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt has significantly curtailed movement through the crossing. It has also banned the entry of aid organisations and journalists into northern Sinai.

Palestinians accuse Egypt of contributing to Israel's 16-year blockade by effectively closing the only exit route from Gaza.

Egyptian officials have been hesitant to allow Palestinians to enter northern Sinai, as they fear it could lead to a permanent resettlement of over 2 million people.

These Palestinians, whom Israel will not allow to return to Gaza, settling in Sinai is a scenario Egypt wishes to avoid. President Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi has expressed concerns about the potential consequences of a Gaza exodus, stating that allowing them to settle in Sinai, even temporarily, would effectively grant Israel control over an emptied Gaza Strip.

Hamas's political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, shares these concerns and has affirmed that there will be no mass migration from Gaza to Egypt. He stated that Egypt welcomes the Palestinian people but not on the basis of migration or exodus.

Historical fears

Egypt has long harboured concerns that Israel or international partners could pressure them into accepting millions of Palestinians settling in Sinai.

Such proposals have been made in the past, and Egyptian officials have consistently rejected the idea. Life in northern Sinai has been challenging for decades, with a lack of basic infrastructure, energy, and habitable land.

There is a significant area near the Gaza border that was designated as a "buffer zone", resulting in the destruction of homes and farmland. Civilians have been prevented from returning to this area.

Egypt is facing a significant economic crisis, which includes the devaluation of its currency, making the prospect of accepting refugees even more challenging. While Cairo has rejected mass displacement from Gaza into Sinai, it has been under pressure from Western countries offering economic incentives to reach an agreement.

Egypt is on the brink of accepting an agreement that would permit foreign and dual nationals to cross from Rafah, as long as humanitarian aid is allowed into Gaza.

Decision-making circles in Egypt may be inclined to accept a large influx of Palestinians into Sinai if international partners provide economic incentives. However, the prospects of long-term financial support for Palestinians in Egypt, either from Cairo or internationally, appear remote, reported the Guardian.

Situation on ground

The escalating conflict in the Gaza Strip has created a critical situation in its hospitals, with their generator fuel supplies running dangerously low.

The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) has issued a stark warning, estimating that the fuel reserves in these hospitals will last only about 24 more hours, reported Reuters.

The shortage of generator fuel is not just a logistical challenge; it is a life-and-death matter. If the backup generators were to fail, thousands of patients, including severely injured children and adults, would be left without essential medical care, and their lives depend on uninterrupted electricity.

Explained: Is the Rafah border crossing the last hope for Gaza Palestinians?

A wealth of grave goods, which included hundreds of large wine jars - some of which were sealed - were uncovered by the archaeologists in the tomb of the First Dynasty Egyptian queen Meret-Neith. The archaeologists said that these funereal riches have bolstered the case that Meret-Neith was a person of great significance, maybe even the first female pharaoh of Egypt.

Meret-Neith is said to have existed some 5,000 years ago and served as Egypt's queen sometime around 2950 BCE. At the very least, Meret-Neith was a queen-consort and regent. As per experts, she may have been a ruler or a pharaoh, however, archaeologists have failed to determine her position with certainty. As per historians, the first queen who is believed to have assumed the full royal titulary was Sobekneferu. However, she is believed to have lived a millennium later.

There is definitely major evidence in the tomb of Meret-Neith at the royal necropolis of Abydos which proves her importance. She was buried in between the final resting places of male pharaohs, and her own tomb was of great richness and comparable size. This has helped experts agree that she was probably the most powerful woman of her time.
