Conservationists in Egypt are racing to save ancient objects buried in the parts of Cairo amid rapid advancement of a highway project. As part of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's modernisation drive, authorities are digging their way through a 7 km-long UNESCO World Heritage site for a highway project. The site is often referred to as the 'City Of Dead'. The roads reportedly tear through a network of mausoleums dating back as far as the seventh century to link congested central Cairo with Egypt's 'New Administrative Capital'. In the rush to preserve signs of ancient history in the rubble, teams of amateur historians and volunteers have found artefacts dating back more than a thousand years. The tombstone has an inscription dating back to 836AD. It was later donated to the Ministry of Tourism and local museums. "I'm not sure how many monuments like this have been destroyed. Every day we go, we find burials that have been removed," Mostafa El Sadek, one of the group members, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph. The newer mausoleum had just been demolished when Dr El Sadek found it. "It is known that there is an older grave under this grave, and when the bulldozer digs, these things appear," cemetery guard Amin Murad said. Egypt's ancient historical artifacts: Aren't they protected? The government does not demolish antiquities registered under the Egyptian Antiquities Law, but reports citing experts say that most of the City of the Dead's antiquities are unregistered. Egypt’s heritage is acclaimed to be second to none in the world due to vast records of their existence left by the ancient residents and rulers of the land. But modern-day Egypt is spending heavily on megaprojects such as highways, monorails and big infrastructure projects. Sudan conflict: Egypt says embassy staff killed; rivals agree to 72-hour ceasfire

Women in Egypt are being arrested on charges such as overlooking "public morals" and "undermining family morals" under a 2018 cyber crime law. The latest victim is the TikTok influencer Salma Elshimy who was arrested after one of her posts on the short-form video sharing platform was deemed offensive.

Elshimy had just landed at Cairo International Airport when she was arrested on April 3. The 33-year-old social media celebrity was arrested on charges of inciting “debauchery” and “violating family values” through her social media posts.

The Egyptian model and influencer with a purported follower base of 3.3 million on TikTok was reportedly returning from a trip to Dubai. It was reported that Elshimy had filed for a permanent residency in Dubai itself. Elshimy's arrest was first reported by a United Arab Emirates-photographer.

According to Qatar-based Middle East Monitor, Egypt’s public prosecutor ordered that she be detained for four days on charges of "spreading immorality" and publishing videos and photographs that "contradict social morals and values".

But this is not the first time that Elshimy has been arrested by the Egyptian authorities. She was arrested for a month in December 2020, and later released on bail. Egypt: TikTok celebrity arrested for 'undermining family morals'

In a diplomatic turn of events, Egypt and Turkiye have taken another step towards mending their estranged relations. Ankara's top diplomat is visiting Cairo for the first time in ten years. In 2013, the relations between the two neighbouring nations were severely strained after Egypt's then-army chief Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, led the ouster of Ankara's ally, the muslim brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi. Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry confirmed that talks to restore ties to the ambassadorial level would happen at an appropriate time. Calling the talks honest, deep and transparent, Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkiye would upgrade its diplomatic relations with Egypt as soon as possible.
