Sameh Shoukry, who is Egypt's foreign minister, will visit disaster-hit Turkey and Syria on Monday morning, news agencies citing his office. It will be the first such visit in a decade of tense relations between both countries.

The foreign ministry statement said the trip is aimed at showing "solidarity with the two countries and their brotherly peoples" in the aftermath of devastating earthquakes that jolted both Syria and Turkey earlier this month, killing over 46,000 people in both countries.

Shoukry had a phone conversation on Saturday with the Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu to discuss the massive impact of the earthquakes.

Hurriyet Daily News reported citing Turkish diplomatic sources that the two top diplomats exchanged views on developments regarding Turkey's earthquake on February 6.

Previously, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi had extended condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the victims of the earthquakes.

A day after the earthquake, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, which was the first official exchange between the two leaders. On the same day, Sisi also spoke with Erdogan.

Egypt last week said that its Armed Forces sent two military jets carrying medical aid and a cargo ship carrying food to Turkey. As mentioned by the news outlet, the Egyptian ship loaded with humanitarian aid arrived at Mersin port on February 22.

The civilian group said that a series of plane and navy shipments of "hundreds of tonnes of medical aid" followed along with "a technical team" supporting rescue operations with the White Helmets in northwest Syria.

World Of Africa: Bringing Cairo back to life

Egypt, sapped dry of dollars despite a $3 billion International Monetary Fund bailout loan, is seeking to boost its coffers by selling state assets to wealthy Gulf nations.

Egypt to sell state assets on Dollar crunch

Egypt is running out of dollars and is attempting to bolster its finances by selling state assets to rich Gulf countries, showed a media report. That despite a $3 billion rescue loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Calling the latest funding attempt a win-win for all parties, experts claim the new deal will call for long-term structural improvements rather than the unconditional rescue deals from the past.

IMF had warned that Egypt would face a financing gap of around $17 billion over the next four years, and Cairo expects the plan to sell state assets will help reduce the deficit. The deal offers a quick way for countries like Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to acquire properties, land, and holdings in state companies in Egypt.

With those countries seeking to diversify beyond their oil and gas-based economies, Cairo's offer is lucrative, especially as the Egyptian pound has taken a beating. A weaker currency makes investment cheaper for a foreign entity.

The war on the edge of Europe, the Russia-Ukraine crisis, pushed global investors to shelter into safe-haven dollar-denominated assets and hurt almost every other currency on the other side of the exchange rate. The Egyptian pound was no exception to the surging dollar bets.

Egypt has become an appealing investment destination for Gulf countries due to a sharp devaluation of its currency and lucrative offers provided by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The North African country has traditionally been an import-dependent economy, and the steep fall in its currency, almost half the value lost against the dollar in less than a year, has cut the country's foreign exchange coffer by 20 per cent since February last year.

Over 80 per cent of the country's forex reserves of $34.2 billion are comprised of deposits from wealthy Gulf affiliates. The nation's foreign debt has more than tripled to $155 billion in the last ten years.

According to a media report, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the World Government Summit in Dubai said, "a country like Egypt needs a trillion-dollar budget each year. Do we have that money? No. Do we have half of it? No. Do we have a quarter of it? No." Sisi acknowledged the "support from friends, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait."

But this time, Gulf nations have warned that Cairo cannot get the aid without conditions anymore, and there needs to be more transparency and long-term structural reforms.

Indeed, Saudi Arabia's finance minister Mohammed al-Jaadan has cautioned the days of restriction-free assistance are finished.

"We used to give direct grants and deposits without strings attached, and we are changing that," Jaadan said at Davos in January, explaining the kingdom will be demanding "to see reforms".

The IMF, too, had laid down stringent conditions, including Egypt opening up its economy and increasing the private sector's share to 65 per cent from the current 30 per cent by 2025.

Egypt, for its part, has tried to establish the new order. According to calculations by the Egyptian business weekly outlet Enterprise, 66 mergers and acquisitions were finalised in Egypt in 2022, more than double the number of deals executed in 2021. The majority of those were military deals. Emirati and Saudi firms had most of the stakes in 40 military deals.

Egypt: 'Possibly the oldest, most complete' 4,300-year-old mummy found

In a bid to revive its tourism industry, Egypt in recent years has made many major archaeological discoveries. Archaeologists on Thursday have made what they are terming a "dream discovery." This is a mummy which was lain within a chamber undisturbed for thousands of years.

Thought to be one of the oldest and most complete non-royal corpses ever found in Egypt, the mummy was covered in gold leaf at the time of excavation. The mummy is believed to be the remains of a man named Hekashepes. This mummy was covered in gold leaf and has been sealed inside a sarcophagus (a stone coffin) that had not been opened for 4,300 years.

These first-of-its-kind mummies were discovered down a 15m (50ft) shaft at a burial site south of Cairo, Saqqara, an active burial ground for more than 3,000 years and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is present at the ancient Egyptian capital Memphis and has over dozen pyramids, including the Step Pyramid.

There were various statues and items of pottery found inside the discovered tombs at the ancient necropolis. The largest of the mummies is believed to be of a man called Khnumdjedef. Khnumdjedef was a priest, inspector and supervisor of nobles. Another mummy belonged to a man called Meri. Meri was a senior palace official who was given the title of "secret keeper". Egypt’s dual identity as an Afro-Arab nation makes Cairo an indispensable ally of India in West Asia, Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea, according to Mohammed Soliman, a strategist who conceptualised the "Indo-Abrahamic" framework.

"As a rising global power, Delhi should build strong bilateral relations with regional powers beyond South Asia— chief among them Cairo," Soliman, the intellectual architect of I2U2 and director of the Strategic Technologies and Cyber Security Program at the Middle East Institute in Washington told WION.

Soliman underscored that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's visit to India is likely to produce a roadmap for bilateral relations and set the tone for cooperation in areas from “pharma to military industries and from food security to information technology.”

Egypt is a significant gateway to markets in Africa and Europe. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral trade reached a record high of $7.26 billion in 2021–22.

On the trade prospects, Soliman said, “Egypt is very open to Indian investment, given the historical relations between the two countries and Egypt’s appreciation of India’s global role.”

This is the first time that an Egyptian president has been invited as chief guest for the Republic Day event. Under former Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, relations between India and Egypt improved, particularly following India's support for Egypt during the 1956 Suez Crisis.

Soliman pointed out that "the India-Egypt alignment is consequential for regional integration in West Asia."

Earlier, President Sisi expressed sympathy and solidarity with India during the second wave of Covid-19 on April 30, 2021. On May 9, 2021, Egypt sent three aircraft carrying medical supplies to India. Egypt, which is struggling to get wheat since its main suppliers Russia and Ukraine are at war, wants to purchase the grain from India.

India had banned the sale of wheat to other nations but permitted the export of 61,000 tonnes to Egypt in May last year. But given the shortages, the nation needs more grains.

MEA in a statement earlier said that the visit will "further strengthen and deepen the time-tested partnership between India and Egypt."

In a big boost to India-Egypt ties, New Delhi invited the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to be the Chief Guest of the Republic Day celebrations on January 26. Last time, Abdel visited India in 2016 on an official visit. This is the first time that an Egyptian President is invited as a Chief Guest for the Republic Day.

India Republic Day: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi invited for parade

As India increases its political and military ties with Cairo, New Delhi has extended an invitation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to be the chief guest at Republic Day on January 26.

The invitation to El Sisi, who has been the Egyptian president since 2014, is being seen as India's outreach to both Africa and the Arab world. Egypt, which is the Arab world's most populous country, is also 2nd largest economy in Africa. This year, both countries celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Rolling out the red carpet for President Sisi means Delhi-Cairo ties will see special attention in the coming few months and years. Both the Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the country earlier this year. During their visits, both the ministers met the Egyptian President, with Jaishankar handing out a "personal message" of PM Modi to him.

The visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Cairo in September was seen as a significant gesture, as both sides stepped up military engagements. During the visit, he held bilateral talks with his Egyptian counterpart General Mohamed Zaki and an MoU in Defense sector was signed as both sides agreed to focus on joint training, defence coproduction and maintenance of equipment. Egypt is looking to buy India's Tejas fighter jets.

The country was also invited to the India-Africa Defence Dialogue and IOR Defence Ministers’ Conclave that took place on the sidelines of the 12th DefExpo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in October. There has been one of close cooperation between Indian and Egyptian Air Forces, with efforts at jointly developing a fighter aircraft in the 1960s. IAF pilots also trained Egyptian pilots from the 1960s until 1984. Egypt regularly provides transit facilities to IAF and Indian Navy aircraft ferrying to/ from Russia, Europe and the USA.

President Sisi paid an official visit to India in September 2016. Prime Minister Modi met Sisi during the Third India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi in October 2015. That same year, both leaders had also met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The North African country is also among the nine countries invited by India for the G20 summit that will be hosted in New Delhi in September 2023. This is the second time that the Modi government has invited a leader from an African nation for Republic Day. India has been keen to increase ties with Africa, and next year could see the India-Africa summit as well, the last of which took place in 2015.

Since 2014, when PM Modi took charge, India has extended invites to US President Barack Obama (2015), French President Francois Hollande (2016), UAE's Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (2017), all the ASEAN Leaders (2018), South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa (2019), Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro (2020).

The last two years---2021, and 2022--- had no republic day guests because of the Covid pandemic. India was keen to invite all the Central Asian leaders this year, but it could not materialise due to Covid. In 2021, UK's then PM Boris Johnson was invited as the guest, but at that time, Britain was grappling with the Covid crisis. This year's republic day will be presided over by new Indian President Draupadi Murmu.

Egypt has never been invited to India's Republic Day so far since the first Republic Day celebration started in 1950. India has invited the maximum number of Republic Day guests from Asian countries (36), followed by Europe (24), Africa (11), South Africa (6), North America (2) and Oceania (1).

Egypt has traditionally been one of India’s most important trading partners in the African continent. Despite the pandemic, the volume of trade declined only marginally to US $ 4.5 billion in 2019-20 and to US $ 4.15 billion in 2020-21. Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India sent a wheat consignment to the country.

Before the conflict, Egypt used to import almost 80 per cent of its wheat supplies from Russia and Ukraine. In April this year, the Egyptian Cabinet announced the inclusion of India in the list of accredited countries which can supply wheat to Egypt, thus ending a long pending non-tariff barrier.

Exclusive: India invites Egypt's President Fattah El-Sisi for Republic Day 2023

At the COP27 climate conference early on Sunday (November 20), nations signed a contentious final deal that establishes a fund to aid impoverished nations suffering from climate catastrophes but does not step up efforts to reduce the emissions that cause them. After difficult talks that lasted all night, the Egyptian COP27 chair made the final language of the agreement public and convened a plenary meeting to swiftly approve it.

Final declaration and historic agreement on "loss and damage" from climate change are the two primary texts adopted by the delegates.

Here are the key takeaways from the two papers, which outline promises on greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, and energy as well as funds to assist developing nations in coping with the terrible effects of climate change.

Final declaration

Reductions in emissions

COP27 "emphasises the urgent need for immediate, deep, quick and sustained reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions," which contribute to global warming.

Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN, lamented a failure to "dramatically decrease emissions today."

Warming objectives

The final statement reiterates the Paris Agreement's temperature target of keeping the rise in the world's average temperature to well below two degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels and pushing initiatives to keep it to 1.5C.

Resolving to continue efforts to keep the temperature increase to 1.5C, it also "reiterates that the repercussions of climate change will be significantly lesser at the temperature increase of 1.5C compared with 2C."

Energy

Parties are urged by COP27 to "accelerate...efforts towards the phase-out of wasteful fossil fuel subsidies and the phase-down of unabated coal power."

Instead of only mentioning subsidies, some nations attempted to discuss lowering the usage of oil and natural gas.

Emissions from coal-fired power plants that are "unabated" are those that are not syphoned off to keep them from entering the atmosphere.

Additionally, the document asks for quickening "fair and sustainable transitions to renewable energy."

Loss and damage

Parties "decide to establish new finance arrangements for aiding developing countries in responding to loss and damage, including by giving and assisting in mobilising new and additional resources."

Additionally, they "decide to establish a fund for addressing loss and damage."

The rules for the new financial arrangements will be laid down by "a transitory committee," and the "sources of money" will be determined.

The committee's suggestions would be made available "for deliberation and adoption" at the COP28 conference in Dubai the following year.

How is the world reacting?

The "loss and damage" fund established at the climate summit in Egypt, to aid vulnerable nations in coping with the devastating effects of climate change garnered praise but there was also resentment about the inability to continue to fight for emission reductions in order to maintain the aspirational target of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.

COP27: Major takeaways from the UN climate summit; reactions from global leaders

The United Nations Climate Summit has finally came to an end with an agreement on how to tackle global warming. The UN has adopted the loss and damage fund to cover the losses suffered by vulnerable nations hit by the impact of global warming.

COP27: UN Climate Change Conference adopts ‘Loss and Damage’ fund

During the initial days of the COP27 summit, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres had asked world leaders what they had done for the world and the planet till now. Being unhappy with the developments in the last two weeks, the UN secretary-general made it clear on Sunday that COP27 did not meet the ambitions at all.

Guterres said that the COP27 climate talks had fallen short in pushing for the urgent "drastic" carbon-cutting needed to tackle global warming, AFP reported. He said, "Our planet is still in the emergency room. We need to drastically reduce emissions now, and this is an issue this COP did not address."

Similar remarks were issued by Frans Timmermans, the EU’s climate chief. Timmermans said that COP27 failed to reach a consensus on keeping global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century while adding that the bloc did not want to scupper a loss and damage fund for more ambition

Norway’s climate minister Espen Barthe Eide also criticised the gathering saying the final declaration did not "contain an explicit reference to phasing down fossil fuels or peaking emissions by 2025."

Eide said, "The Egyptian president’s focus on the loss and damage fund detracted from work on climate mitigation." Although he lauded the declaration for not letting the ambition "scale down from Glasgow".

Germany’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock appeared to be pinning the blame on "an alliance of oil-rich countries and major emitters" for the disappointing outcome.

As per media reports, representatives from various nations also staged walkouts while expressing disappointment with how the process played out. Allegations were levelled and a series of documents were rushed through without having discussions.
