Despite these tragic numbers, no national study had previously estimated the number of children who lost a parent to drug overdose.&nbsp;

"This first-of-its-kind study allows us to better understand the tragic magnitude of the overdose crisis and the reverberations it has among children and families," said Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, the leader of SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).

As per the study published in JAMA Psychiatry, the rate of children who experienced this momentous loss more than doubled between 2011 and 2021 — from 27 to 63 children per 100,000.

Of this, the highest numbers were of children with non-Hispanic white parents. However, communities of colour and tribal communities were also found to be disproportionately affected.

According to a press release, American Indian/Alaska Native children have the highest rate of parent loss due to overdose (187/100,000) from 2011 to 2021, twice that of White and Black children (76.5/100,000 and 73/100,000 respectively).

"It is devastating to see that almost half of the people who died of a drug overdose had a child. No family should lose their loved one to an overdose, and each of these deaths represents a tragic loss that could have been prevented," said Nora Volkow, MD, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) director.&nbsp;

"These findings emphasise the need to better support parents in accessing prevention, treatment, and recovery services. In addition, any child who loses a parent to overdose must receive the care and support they need to navigate this painful and traumatic experience."

A 22-year-old from Argyll, a 32-year-old from Oban and a 24-year-old from Campbeltown, all in Scotland, and a 39-year-old from Colombia were arrested at 8:30 am (local time) on Saturday (May 4).&nbsp;

“This was a significant amount of cocaine and its seizure will be a sizeable blow to the organised crime group which attempted to smuggle it into the UK,” said senior investigating officer Alan French.&nbsp;

“There’s no doubt these drugs would have been sold into communities around the UK, fuelling further crime and exploitation. Working with our law enforcement partners we are determined to do all we can to disrupt criminal activity, and protect the UK’s border security,” French added.&nbsp;

In a string of incidents involving packages consisting of illicit drugs washing&nbsp;up on beaches in Australia’s Sydney, another five “bricks” of cocaine worth nearly AU$1 million ($650,720) were found by beachgoers, on Monday (Apr 1).&nbsp;

<h2>What was found?</h2>

The beachgoers in Sydney’s Freshwater and Curl Curl found the packets, on Monday (Apr 1) morning, weighing a total of five kilogrammes, with drugs estimated to have a street value of AU$900,000 ($585,292).&nbsp;

According to local media reports, two packages were found at Freshwater Beach. Additionally, another three bricks were found on nearby Curl Curl Beach wrapped in plastic and tightly tied with tape.

The recently found package is among several others that have been discovered around Sydney sporadically since three days before Christmas last year.&nbsp;

“As inquiries continue, the public are reminded to report any suspicious package to authorities,” said the New South Wales (NSW) police, in a statement on Tuesday (Apr 2).&nbsp;

<h2>Months-long mystery</h2>

Since the first discovery in December, packages containing more than 250 kilogrammes of cocaine have been found along the coast of the Australian state.&nbsp;

On December 22, 2023, a package of illicit drugs was found in the Central Coast region, around 90 kg,&nbsp;north of Sydney&nbsp;three days before Christmas.&nbsp;

Similar packages have also been discovered in Western Australia and Victoria after being washed ashore. Meanwhile, several beaches in NSW have reported such packages since December.&nbsp;

Two larger containers that had up to 39 kg&nbsp;of cocaine were found at northern beaches and at Ocean Baths a day after Christmas, on Boxing Day.&nbsp;

The drugs were supposed to be transferred from the Panama-flagged ship to a smaller vessel before heading to the Canary Islands. However, as the police prepared to intercept the “mothership”, officers learned about the hostage situation that had unfolded.&nbsp;

The Spanish police scrambled to get to the vessel at an undisclosed location in the Atlantic after they found out that “one member of the tugboat crew, of Serbian origin, had kidnapped the rest of the crew” said the interior ministry in a statement, adding that the priority was now protecting those who were being held hostage.&nbsp;

In order to take control of the vessel, the person who kidnapped the crew had reportedly fatally shot one of the men and thrown his body into the sea. Less than 12 hours later the police arrived near the vessel and what followed was hours of negotiations with the hostage taker on the high seas.&nbsp;

The kidnapper ended up surrendering his weapon and freed the crew “who feared for their lives,” said the statement. The incident occurred in November, but was kept under judicial secrecy until an investigation was completed, said Spain’s interior ministry, on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The vessel was brought to Tenerife where the officials found 2.3 tonnes of cocaine in a “very difficult-to-access compartment” divided into bundles and attached to lights and water bottles so that the drugs could float in the water until it was collected.&nbsp;

The high-stakes operation led to the arrest of everyone on the ship, and the seizure of 2.3 tonnes of cocaine, as well as some electronic and satellite equipment, said the interior ministry.&nbsp;

Unconventional drug use on the rise

Elon Musk has responded to media reports claiming that the billionaire had been observed taking drugs by people around him and that it had affected his work. Musk took to his social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and said "not even trace quantities" of drugs were found in his system.&nbsp;

The Tesla founder was&nbsp;responding to an excerpt from the Wall Street Journal report where the publication questioned Musk's behaviour after smoking marijuana at Joe Rogan's popular podcast show in 2018. The report added that Musk's conduct had resulted in employees at&nbsp;SpaceX being randomly tested for drugs.&nbsp;

"After that one puff with Rogan, I agreed, at NASA’s request, to do 3 years of random drug testing. Not even trace quantities were found of any drugs or alcohol," said Musk.

The Indian security forces near the border areas with Pakistan have been engaged in a rather unconventional battle throughout the year. The drug lords sitting in Pakistan have been using drones to fuel the drug crisis in the northern Indian state of Punjab.&nbsp;

Border Security Force (BSF) tasked with guarding the fence&nbsp;had intercepted as many as 90 drones from Pakistan so far in 2023, according to a Guardian report. The drones, some known as hexacopters, can measure up to eight feet wide and have high-resolution cameras attached to them for manoeuvrability.&nbsp;

Most of the drones were captured carrying consignments of opium and heroin, likely to have been manufactured in Afghanistan. The drugs were often carried in small sacks or Coca-Cola bottles.&nbsp;Apart from drug drones, some carry weapons, including pistols and Chinese-made assault rifles.

Smuggling across Pakistan-India border has been going on for decades but since the first drone was spotted in Punjab in 2019, the menace of drone-drugs has increased exponentially. According to BSF, drones are responsible for 60 per cent of the drug-smuggling in the Indian state in 2023.

The challenge is increasing for security agencies as the drone technology evolves. Previously, drones could be detected through noise or the visibility of their light. However, in recent month, drone models that fly as high as&nbsp;one km and produce little to no noise have made the task difficult for agencies.&nbsp;

“We just used to be focused on land, but this aerial thing is a new domain for us and it is indeed a challenge.&nbsp;But I believe we will be able to contain this drone menace by next year," said&nbsp;Atul Fulzele, the inspector general of BSF in Punjab.

As early as this week on Monday (Dec 25), BSF thwarted a smuggling attempt in Amritsar's Ranian village. The BSF troops caught the drone and seized&nbsp;434 gm&nbsp;of heroin wrapped with adhesive tape.&nbsp;

"On 25 December 2023, during morning hours, on specific information of BSF regarding smuggling through a drone on the outskirts of Village - Ranian &amp; Rear Kakkar, District - Amritsar, an operation was planned," BSF stated in a post.

The BSF has implemented a three-pronged strategy in the face of the crisis which includes&nbsp;curtailing the drug supply, generating awareness against drug abuse whilst empowering the youth with skills to channelise their energies, instead of snorting drugs.&nbsp;

In what is being hailed as Italy's biggest&nbsp;mafia trial in three decades, an Italian court has delivered convictions and sentences to over 200 people, marking a significant blow against the notorious 'Ndrangheta.

This "maxi trial" concluded after three years in a high-security courtroom in Calabria, specially designed to accommodate the extensive network associated with the powerful organized crime syndicate.

<h2>But first, who form the&nbsp;'Ndrangheta?</h2>

Situated in the southern region of Calabria, the 'Ndrangheta' has established a virtual monopoly on the European cocaine trade, extending its influence globally.

Originating in the impoverished rural area of Calabria, at the southern tip of Italy, its roots date back to at least the country's unification in 1861.

The name 'Ndrangheta, derived from Greek, conveys the notion of valour, and its top members undergo formal initiation ceremonies. Initially regarded as primarily a rural phenomenon, it gained public prominence in the 1980s and 1990s through a series of kidnappings across Italy.

While often overshadowed by the more visible Costa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta affiliates gained notoriety for the kidnapping of the grandson of the US-born oil tycoon John Paul Getty in 1973, a crime that involved the severing of the victim's ear to facilitate a ransom.

Notably, it wasn't until 2010 that Italy officially classified the 'Ndrangheta as a mafia group&nbsp;under the law.

This operation went beyond Italy's borders, leading to arrests in Germany, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. Even a former Forza Italia MP, Giancarlo Pittelli, faced an 11-year jail term for aiding a mafia clan.

At the forefront of this legal battle is Nicola Gratteri, an anti-mafia prosecutor who led the investigation. His team's work involved collecting 24,000 wiretaps and intercepted conversations, forming the backbone of the charges brought against the defendants.

<h2>'Ndrangheta's tactics</h2>

The trial provided a chilling glimpse into the ruthless tactics employed by the 'Ndrangheta. Evidence presented showed a pattern of violent attacks, extortion, corruption in public contracts, weapon stockpiling, manipulation of elections, and bribery.

The 'Ndrangheta's stranglehold on local communities became painfully evident, revealing the extent to which the organisation had embedded itself in various aspects of society.
