A 19-year-old bodybuilder from Brazil, known for his drastic body transformation from being obese to gaining ripped muscles, was discovered dead at his home due to an apparent heart attack. The incident sparked suspicion about the potential role of anabolic steroids as a cause of his death.

Matheus Pavlak, who resides in Santa Catarina, Brazil, has been a renowned figure in the bodybuilding industry.

In five&nbsp;years, he transformed his body through regular competitions and earning accolades, coming fourth&nbsp;and sixth&nbsp;in regional contests and becoming the champion of the U23 contest in 2023. People called him “Mr. Blumenau” in his native place.

TMZ and other media outlets stated that Pavlak’s death was due to anabolic steroids, evident from his muscular physique at such a young age. His death sparked&nbsp;a public debate on social media platforms, arguing whether steroid involvement contributed to the heart attack or not.

One of Pavlak’s companions shared a statement on social media, dismissing the allegations, saying, “How can human beings exist who are capable of offending the memory of a boy who is no longer here to defend himself!!”

Pavlak constantly spoke about his&nbsp;journey on social media, being an inspiration to many who dream of building a muscular physique. One of his posts said, “No matter how difficult or impossible your dream is if you really want it, you will get there. I DID.”

His former trainer, Lucas Chegatti, expressed his grief on social media, saying, “Today ends in a sad day with the loss of a great friend, a spectacular young man who leaves us far too soon, a tragedy that has taken us by surprise. He had a brilliant future ahead of him as a respected athlete. God has his plans, but it’s hard to understand; I don’t have the words to explain the weight I feel in my heart.”

“I was Matheus’ first coach, and I’m very proud to have had the opportunity to care for him like a son. I promised him that one day he would beat me and said and done, the first time we competed against each other, he ended up winning,” Chegatti added.

Chegatti and Pavlak first met in 2022, and he has been his mentor and trainer since then.

The tragic death&nbsp;of Matheus Pavlak has become a big concern in the bodybuilding community. This comes&nbsp;as the number of high-profile bodybuilders' deaths is growing at an alarming rate.

Earlier in April, a Brazilian bodybuilder and fitness coach died at the age of 29 from complications he faced due to COVID-19. In May, another athlete, Majorcan, who fought cancer and survived, passed away at the age of 50.

Pavlak’s death&nbsp;has highlighted the complications and health issues bodybuilders face during their journey and the risks of using performance-enhancing substances.

The&nbsp;reason behind Pavlak’s death is yet to be identified, as the investigation is still ongoing.

A new discovery in the mummified brains of residents who lived in 17th-century Italy has left scientists wondering if they were addicted to cocaine or perhaps were consuming its leaves to curb their hunger and thirst. In an unexpected find, the preserved mummified human brains of people have tested positive for cocaine, which has confirmed the use of the drug centuries before it became popular in Europe. The mummified brains were part of the Ca’Granda crypt which is a burial site close to a famous hospital of that time. The hospital Ospedale Maggiore was famous for treating the poor and disadvantaged people of Milan. The University of Milan's researchers conducted different studies on the remains discovered in the crypt and sought to determine what the day's medical treatments may have appeared like. Also Read: Ice melt reveals mummified body of American mountaineer who vanished in Peru 22 years ago In the latest study, which was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, the scientists carried out toxicology tests on brain matter inside the skulls. Among two of the nine samples tested, the researchers discovered active components of Erythroxylum coca - the plant from which cocaine is derived. The traces of cocaine were found by University of Milan forensic toxicologist Gaia Giordano and her team after the archaeologists found the human remains while wearing protective equipment under the toxicologists' supervision and keeping them in sealed, sterilised jars. Here's why 17th-century poor Italians consumed cocaine Giordano and his team found benzoylecgonine in the brain samples, which hinted that the cocaine had passed from the bodies of the two people before they died. There was also the presence of hygrine - which is an alkaloid present in the leaves of the coca plant Erythroxylum - that confirmed that the people consumed drugs in its plant form. Watch: Peru's 'Alien Mummies' under fresh scrutiny "The molecules detected in these human remains derived from the chewing of coca leaves or from leaves brewed as a tea, consistent with the historical period," concluded the team. The coca, in its tea form, is a mild stimulant in comparison to a strong cup of coffee. The way the former hospital patients were buried also indicated that they were underprivileged, which further hinted that coca leaves were cheap in 1600s Milan. "The effects of the plant, including reduced hunger and thirst, as well as a sense of well-being, were known and controlled by the Spaniards and subsequently diffused to the rest of Europe," wrote the researchers, as they explained how Spanish ruled Milan at the time. However, the researchers were not able to rule out the possibility of coca leaves being administered as a medicine to the patients at the hospital, however, there were no records of the plant's medicinal use during the 1600s. In New Zealand, candies laced with dangerous, potentially fatal quantities of methamphetamine landed three individuals — a child, a teenager, and a charity worker in the hospital.

The candies were distributed by a charity, the Auckland City Mission, known for providing essential supplies to those in need. The New Zealand charity has issued a public apology,&nbsp;"to say we are devastated is an understatement," it said.

New Zealand: Candy laced with fatal levels of meth distributed by charity; 400 candies still 'out there'

Approximately one in three Americans knows someone who has died from a drug overdose, revealed a new survey on Friday (May 31).&nbsp;

<h2>Losing someone to drug overdose</h2>

More than 2,300 adults took part in the survey conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

It found that 32 per cent of respondents knew someone who had succumbed to a fatal drug overdose. Furthermore, for 18.9 per cent of these, that person "was a family member or close friend".

The survey also highlighted the fact that individuals across the political spectrum had similar rates of knowing someone who had died from an overdose. It also found that those personally affected by such a loss were more likely to view addiction as an "extremely or very important policy issue." Researchers believe this indicates that those who have lost loved ones to overdoses might be able to unite to "facilitate greater policy change."

"The drug overdose crisis is a national tragedy," said Alene Kennedy-Hendricks, who led the analysis, in a news release. She emphasised that while many US adults are mourning overdose-related losses, they might not be as visible as groups affected by "less stigmatised health issues".&nbsp;

Furthermore, the economic burden of the opioid crisis is staggering, with associated costs exceeding $1 trillion annually in the United States, reported&nbsp;the survey.

<h2>US drug epidemic</h2>

In recent years, the United States, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has witnessed over 100,000 drug overdose deaths annually. Since 1990, more than one million Americans have died from drug overdoses, with the majority of these deaths being opioid-related. Synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, have been a major driver of this crisis, said the CDC.

This comes as another recent study revealed that drug abuse is increasingly claiming the lives of scores of parents, leaving hundreds of thousands of children orphan.

As per the National Institute on Drug Abuse, between 2011 and 2021, around 649,599 people aged 18 to 64 died from a drug overdose. This translates to an estimated 321,566 children losing a parent to the drug epidemic.&nbsp;

Drug abuse is increasingly claiming the lives of numerous parents, leaving hundreds of thousands of children orphan, revealed a new study. As per the National Institute on Drug Abuse, between 2011 and 2021, over 321,000 children lost a parent to drug overdose in the United States.

Despite these tragic numbers, no national study had previously estimated the number of children who lost a parent to drug overdose.&nbsp;

"This first-of-its-kind study allows us to better understand the tragic magnitude of the overdose crisis and the reverberations it has among children and families," said Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, the leader of SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).

As per the study published in JAMA Psychiatry, the rate of children who experienced this momentous loss more than doubled between 2011 and 2021 — from 27 to 63 children per 100,000.

<h2>The communities affected</h2>

Of this, the highest numbers were of children with non-Hispanic white parents. However, communities of colour and tribal communities were also found to be disproportionately affected.

According to a press release, American Indian/Alaska Native children have the highest rate of parent loss due to overdose (187/100,000) from 2011 to 2021, twice that of White and Black children (76.5/100,000 and 73/100,000 respectively).

"It is devastating to see that almost half of the people who died of a drug overdose had a child. No family should lose their loved one to an overdose, and each of these deaths represents a tragic loss that could have been prevented," said Nora Volkow, MD, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) director.&nbsp;

"These findings emphasise the need to better support parents in accessing prevention, treatment, and recovery services. In addition, any child who loses a parent to overdose must receive the care and support they need to navigate this painful and traumatic experience."

Between 2011 and 2021, 649,599 people aged 18 to 64 died from a drug overdose. This translates to an estimated 321,566 children losing a parent. Also read | Advances in artificial intelligence mean 'deadbots' can 'haunt' the living, warn experts. Here's what it means Despite these tragic numbers, no national study had previously estimated the number of children who lost a parent to drug overdose. The communities affected Of this, the highest numbers were of children with non-Hispanic white parents. However, communities of colour and tribal communities were also found to be disproportionately affected. Also read | Have we 'already lost climate battle'?: April continues damning 11-month trend, emerges as hottest since 1940 According to a press release, American Indian/Alaska Native children have the highest rate of parent loss due to overdose (187/100,000) from 2011 to 2021, twice that of White and Black children (76.5/100,000 and 73/100,000 respectively). "It is devastating to see that almost half of the people who died of a drug overdose had a child. No family should lose their loved one to an overdose, and each of these deaths represents a tragic loss that could have been prevented," said Nora Volkow, MD, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) director. "These findings emphasise the need to better support parents in accessing prevention, treatment, and recovery services. In addition, any child who loses a parent to overdose must receive the care and support they need to navigate this painful and traumatic experience." (With inputs from agencies)

Four men have been arrested after half a tonne of cocaine worth more than $50 million (40 million pounds) was found in a van in the car park of a Yorkshire village pub.&nbsp;

<h2>What we know about the case</h2>

Around 500-kilogramme of cocaine – with an estimated street value of about more than $50 million – was found in the car park of the Stags Head Inn in Lelley in East Yorkshire, England, said the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA).&nbsp;

The government agency also said that it believes that the drugs were brought to shore in a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) after being transferred from a larger vessel off the Hull coast.&nbsp;

The boat was abandoned at Easington Beach, the NCA added. The beach in question is around 29 kilometres away from the pub where the drugs were found in the back of a Vauxhall Vivaro van.&nbsp;

<h2>About those arrested</h2>

A 22-year-old from Argyll, a 32-year-old from Oban and a 24-year-old from Campbeltown, all in Scotland, and a 39-year-old from Colombia were arrested at 8:30 am (local time) on Saturday (May 4).&nbsp;

“This was a significant amount of cocaine and its seizure will be a sizeable blow to the organised crime group which attempted to smuggle it into the UK,” said senior investigating officer Alan French.&nbsp;

“There’s no doubt these drugs would have been sold into communities around the UK, fuelling further crime and exploitation. Working with our law enforcement partners we are determined to do all we can to disrupt criminal activity, and protect the UK’s border security,” French added.&nbsp;

The senior official also said that an investigation into the case is underway after the arrests. The operation was supported by Humberside Police, the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit and Border Force, said the NCA.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, a shipment of cocaine worth approximately $565 million had been found&nbsp;in a container&nbsp;at Southampton Port carrying bananas from South America. It was the largest-ever seizure of a haul of class-A drugs in the UK and weighed around 5.7 tonnes, according to the NCA.&nbsp;

In a sudden move, British Columbia has reversed its 'landmark' drug decriminalisation experiment.&nbsp;

On Friday (Apr 26), the British Columbia Office of the Premier in a press release announced that the Canadian Province was "taking action to make illicit drug use illegal in all public spaces, including inside hospitals, on transit and in parks."

<h2>Keeping people safe</h2>

David Eby, the premier, announced that he's asking the federal government to make public drug use illegal again.

"Keeping people safe is our highest priority. While we are caring and compassionate for those struggling with addiction, we do not accept street disorder that makes communities feel unsafe."&nbsp;

"We're taking action to make sure police have the tools they need to ensure safe and comfortable communities for everyone as we expand treatment options, so people can stay alive and get better," he added.

<h2>The experiment</h2>

When British Columbia started the experiment in 2023, it was a big change in how the law treats drug use. The experiment sought to help people who use drugs instead of punishing them or making them feel like criminals.&nbsp;

The plan was supposed to run for three years and be closely watched by the federal and provincial governments.

At the time, Canada's health minister said it could be a model for other places, and the province's health officer believed it could make a real difference in the overdose crisis happening in British Columbia.

However, now, the province is scaling back on the decriminalisation effort. While experts say that fixing the drug supply is crucial to stopping deaths, many people are unhappy with the open drug use and the number of deaths. Some think the government has been too lenient.

In a statement, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General said, "Our communities are facing big challenges. People are dying from deadly street drugs, and we see the issues with public use and disorder on our streets."

"As we continue to go after the gangs and organized criminals who are making and trafficking toxic drugs, we're taking action now to make it illegal to use drugs in public spaces, and to expand access to treatment to help people who need it most." &nbsp;

As per the Guardian, people will still be allowed to have a small amount — 2.5g — of certain drugs in private places, like homes or safe injection sites. However, police will now be able to take drugs from people using them in public or even arrest them in some cases.

However, the decision to roll back the decriminalisation has been criticised by advocacy groups, who say the province didn't give the experiment a "fair chance". They have also alleged that the province is using it as an excuse for other problems like the housing crisis and poverty.

On X, Moms Stop the Harm posted, "BC never gave #decrim a fair chance. It is blamed for social issues that are the result of policy failure[s] resulting in a housing crisis &amp; poverty."

President Ferdinand Marcos announced on Tuesday (April 16)&nbsp;that the Philippines has confiscated 1.8 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine, calling it a record-breaking seizure and the&nbsp;"right approach"&nbsp;in the fight against drugs. The illegal drugs, valued at over $230 million, were discovered on Monday (April 15) in a van searched by police in Batangas province, located south of Manila. The driver was arrested.

Marcos examined the drug seizure on Tuesday, describing it as the&nbsp;biggest shipment of shabu ever caught" in the Philippines. "Shabu" is the local term for inexpensive and extremely addictive crystal methamphetamine. It remained unclear whether it constituted a record in terms of either value or quantity.

Authorities were tracking the source of the drugs, although Marcos asserted they were not manufactured locally.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi's teammate, and forward, Angel Di Maria received a threat at his family home on the outskirts of Rosario&nbsp;during an intense wave of drug-related violence in the central city. What began as a drug bust for the Spanish police turned into a hostage situation after a suspected cocaine smuggler killed a member of his own crew and held the others hostage on a boat from South America en route to Spain in the middle of the Atlantic, the interior ministry said on Wednesday (Feb 14).&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

The Spanish police were conducting an operation following a tipoff about a vessel carrying 2.3 tonnes of cocaine from South America to Spain, in what the ministry described as the “mothership” named Sea Paradise.&nbsp;

The drugs were supposed to be transferred from the Panama-flagged ship to a smaller vessel before heading to the Canary Islands. However, as the police prepared to intercept the “mothership”, officers learned about the hostage situation that had unfolded.&nbsp;

The Spanish police scrambled to get to the vessel at an undisclosed location in the Atlantic after they found out that “one member of the tugboat crew, of Serbian origin, had kidnapped the rest of the crew” said the interior ministry in a statement, adding that the priority was now protecting those who were being held hostage.&nbsp;

In order to take control of the vessel, the person who kidnapped the crew had reportedly fatally shot one of the men and thrown his body into the sea. Less than 12 hours later the police arrived near the vessel and what followed was hours of negotiations with the hostage taker on the high seas.&nbsp;

The kidnapper ended up surrendering his weapon and freed the crew “who feared for their lives,” said the statement. The incident occurred in November, but was kept under judicial secrecy until an investigation was completed, said Spain’s interior ministry, on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The vessel was brought to Tenerife where the officials found 2.3 tonnes of cocaine in a “very difficult-to-access compartment” divided into bundles and attached to lights and water bottles so that the drugs could float in the water until it was collected.&nbsp;

The high-stakes operation led to the arrest of everyone on the ship, and the seizure of 2.3 tonnes of cocaine, as well as some electronic and satellite equipment, said the interior ministry.&nbsp;

<h2>One of the largest intercepts</h2>

The statement about the incident in November was also released just a few days after Spanish police seized eight tonnes of cocaine in one of its largest intercepts ever.&nbsp;

On Monday (Feb 12), Spain’s finance ministry said that the police had seized eight tonnes of cocaine hidden in a fake power generator in the southern port of Algeciras.&nbsp;

The haul of cocaine was inside a metal structure which was being transported from Suriname to Panama and then onwards to Algeciras, but was intercepted before making its way to Leixoes in Portugal.&nbsp;

The metal structure and the route were carefully chosen by the smugglers to avoid detection, said the Spanish officials. However, the customs agents said they had forced open the metal structure after detecting a “large amount of merchandise perfectly stacked in pallets,” which practically filled the container. &nbsp;

Elon Musk's habit of&nbsp;taking "illegal drugs" has been known to some serving and former directors of Tesla and SpaceX but none took any action as they didn't want to lose the social currency that the billionaire's circle brought, a report in the Wall Street Journal has claimed.&nbsp;

Several directors at Tesla and SpaceX have money ties with Musk which may have bought their silence on his drug issues. The Tesla CEO has reportedly invested in entities linked to venture capitalists Antonio Gracias, Ira Ehrenpreis, tech magnet Larry Ellison and former media executive James Murdoch.

In turn, these people&nbsp;have invested money in at least one of&nbsp;six companies belonging to Musk&nbsp;(Tesla, SpaceX, The Coring Co., X,&nbsp;Neuralink and xAI).&nbsp;Notably, Ellison, while being a director, also owned a significantly sizeable 1.5 per cent stake in Tesla as of 2022.

Apart from investments, the newspaper claimed that Musk&nbsp;also provided career support to the likes of&nbsp;&nbsp;Steve Jurvetson, who stepped down from his firm DFJ Venture Capital in 2017 after being accused of sexual harassment. Despite the allegations, Tesla retained him as an independent director till he resigned in 2020

Musk’s ‘illegal drug use’, silence of board and money ties with directors: What a new report claims

An epidemic has taken over Europe. Easier to consume than cocaine, crack is emerging as the preferred choice for addicts across the continent. Investigators say it is cheaper and is attracting more and more consumption. While cocaine consumption has remained steady in the past three years, the share of crack has increased rapidly.

'That one puff with Rogan': Elon Musk responds to drug use claims amid backlash

The Indian security forces near the border areas with Pakistan have been engaged in a rather unconventional battle throughout the year. The drug lords sitting in Pakistan have been using drones to fuel the drug crisis in the northern Indian state of Punjab.&nbsp;

Border Security Force (BSF) tasked with guarding the fence&nbsp;had intercepted as many as 90 drones from Pakistan so far in 2023, according to a Guardian report. The drones, some known as hexacopters, can measure up to eight feet wide and have high-resolution cameras attached to them for manoeuvrability.&nbsp;

Most of the drones were captured carrying consignments of opium and heroin, likely to have been manufactured in Afghanistan. The drugs were often carried in small sacks or Coca-Cola bottles.&nbsp;Apart from drug drones, some carry weapons, including pistols and Chinese-made assault rifles.

Smuggling across Pakistan-India border has been going on for decades but since the first drone was spotted in Punjab in 2019, the menace of drone-drugs has increased exponentially. According to BSF, drones are responsible for 60 per cent of the drug-smuggling in the Indian state in 2023.

<h2>A difficult task</h2>

The challenge is increasing for security agencies as the drone technology evolves. Previously, drones could be detected through noise or the visibility of their light. However, in recent month, drone models that fly as high as&nbsp;one km and produce little to no noise have made the task difficult for agencies.&nbsp;

“We just used to be focused on land, but this aerial thing is a new domain for us and it is indeed a challenge.&nbsp;But I believe we will be able to contain this drone menace by next year," said&nbsp;Atul Fulzele, the inspector general of BSF in Punjab.

The Indian security forces near the border areas with Pakistan have been engaged in a rather unconventional battle throughout the year. The drug lords sitting in Pakistan have been using drones to fuel the drug crisis in the northern Indian state of Punjab. Border Security Force (BSF) tasked with guarding the fence had intercepted as many as 90 drones from Pakistan so far in 2023, according to a Guardian report. The drones, some known as hexacopters, can measure up to eight feet wide and have high-resolution cameras attached to them for manoeuvrability. Most of the drones were captured carrying consignments of opium and heroin, likely to have been manufactured in Afghanistan. The drugs were often carried in small sacks or Coca-Cola bottles. Apart from drug drones, some carry weapons, including pistols and Chinese-made assault rifles. Smuggling across Pakistan-India border has been going on for decades but since the first drone was spotted in Punjab in 2019, the menace of drone-drugs has increased exponentially. According to BSF, drones are responsible for 60 per cent of the drug-smuggling in the Indian state in 2023. Watch | Pakistani drones cross India-Pak border × A difficult task The challenge is increasing for security agencies as the drone technology evolves. Previously, drones could be detected through noise or the visibility of their light. However, in recent month, drone models that fly as high as one km and produce little to no noise have made the task difficult for agencies. “We just used to be focused on land, but this aerial thing is a new domain for us and it is indeed a challenge. But I believe we will be able to contain this drone menace by next year," said Atul Fulzele, the inspector general of BSF in Punjab. A zoo in Japan has launched an investigation after medicines intended to kill parasites accidentally killed 31 of the 40 squirrels enclosed inside the facility. The incident transpired at the Inokashira Park Zoo in Tokyo last week and a probe is currently underway. The zookeepers had sprayed insecticide on the animals’ nest boxes and administered anti-parasitic medication to them on December 4. Soon after the medication was delivered, one of the bushy-tailed rodents, a common Japanese squirrel — died. Over the next few days, the death toll continued to pile up and as of Monday (Dec 11), 31 squirrels had lost their lives. Also read | NUTS! "We're currently investigating the cause of their deaths and observing the conditions of surviving individuals," they said, adding that a pathological examination of the corpses was underway. "We offer our deepest apologies," the statement said. The zoo officials, however, maintain that the drugs were used in proper doses, as intended in the manual. Moreover, they had been administered on previous occasions without any incident. Japan is home to three kinds of tree-dwelling creatures: the Japanese squirrel, the Japanese flying squirrel and the Japanese giant flying squirrel. While adorable, their numbers in residential areas have been a nuisance for the Japanese public. In the eastern city of Kamakura, the municipality has proposed a supplementary budget of $48,000 for extermination efforts while warning tourists that feeding the squirrels may increase their numbers. At the end of November this year, as many as 1,533 squirrels had been exterminated in the region. The local government has put up posters on bulletin boards around the city describing incidents of damage. (With inputs from agencies)

In what is being hailed as Italy's biggest&nbsp;mafia trial in three decades, an Italian court has delivered convictions and sentences to over 200 people, marking a significant blow against the notorious 'Ndrangheta.

This "maxi trial" concluded after three years in a high-security courtroom in Calabria, specially designed to accommodate the extensive network associated with the powerful organized crime syndicate.

<h2>But first, who form the&nbsp;'Ndrangheta?</h2>

Situated in the southern region of Calabria, the 'Ndrangheta' has established a virtual monopoly on the European cocaine trade, extending its influence globally.

Originating in the impoverished rural area of Calabria, at the southern tip of Italy, its roots date back to at least the country's unification in 1861.

The name 'Ndrangheta, derived from Greek, conveys the notion of valour, and its top members undergo formal initiation ceremonies. Initially regarded as primarily a rural phenomenon, it gained public prominence in the 1980s and 1990s through a series of kidnappings across Italy.

While often overshadowed by the more visible Costa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta affiliates gained notoriety for the kidnapping of the grandson of the US-born oil tycoon John Paul Getty in 1973, a crime that involved the severing of the victim's ear to facilitate a ransom.

Notably, it wasn't until 2010 that Italy officially classified the 'Ndrangheta as a mafia group&nbsp;under the law.

<h2>The&nbsp;scale of the 'maxi trial'</h2>

The verdicts bring to a close a trial that has been unprecedented in scale. Held in Lamezia Terme, the courtroom was built to host up to 350 defendants, 400 lawyers, and hear from 900 witnesses.

More than 100 people&nbsp;were acquitted, but the sheer number of convictions makes this a landmark legal victory against a gang&nbsp;&nbsp;that has long held a near-monopoly on the European cocaine trade.

<h2>Origins of the trial: A comprehensive analysis</h2>

The roots of this maxi trial trace back to a comprehensive investigation launched in 2016, covering at least 11 Italian regions.

The culmination of this effort occurred in December 2019 when over 2,500 officers conducted raids focused on suspects in Vibo Valentia, Calabria—the heart of the 'Ndrangheta's Mancuso clan.

<h2>Arrests beyond Italian borders</h2>

This operation went beyond Italy's borders, leading to arrests in Germany, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. Even a former Forza Italia MP, Giancarlo Pittelli, faced an 11-year jail term for aiding a mafia clan.

At the forefront of this legal battle is Nicola Gratteri, an anti-mafia prosecutor who led the investigation. His team's work involved collecting 24,000 wiretaps and intercepted conversations, forming the backbone of the charges brought against the defendants.

<h2>'Ndrangheta's tactics</h2>

The trial provided a chilling glimpse into the ruthless tactics employed by the 'Ndrangheta. Evidence presented showed a pattern of violent attacks, extortion, corruption in public contracts, weapon stockpiling, manipulation of elections, and bribery.

The 'Ndrangheta's stranglehold on local communities became painfully evident, revealing the extent to which the organisation had embedded itself in various aspects of society.

A notable departure from traditional mafia trials was the inclusion of non-mafia people among the defendants. This marked a significant shift in strategy, targeting not just the foot soldiers of the criminal organisation but also high-ranking police officials, mayors, public servants, and businesspeople.

The trial aimed to expose the network of collaborators enabling the 'Ndrangheta's criminal activities.
