Developed by Iran's HESA in 2021, it has the capability to carry 36kg of explosives as warhead. Shahed 136 has a range of 2,500 kilometres and a maximum speed of 135 km per hour. <p>Iraq's pro-Iran Hashed force on Thursday (Jan 4) condemned the United States for launching a drone strike that killed a military commander of the ex-paramilitary force.</p>

<p>"A drone targeted the logistical support headquarters of Hashed al-Shaabi," mainly pro-Iranian former paramilitary units integrated into the Iraqi armed forces, said the security official.</p>

<p>The official further said that the drone attack killed two more members of their militia group.</p>

<p>The strike killed "two members and wounded seven others", said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Harakat al-Nujaba, one of the Hashed's factions, released a statement saying that "the deputy commander of operations for Baghdad, Mushtaq Talib al-Saidi" had been "martyred in a US strike".</p>

<p>As per news agency AFP, there was no immediate response from the United States officials.</p>

<p>The strike comes in the midst of heightened regional tensions since the war broke out between US ally Israel and Iran-backed Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian militant group launched unprecedented attacks against Tel Aviv on Oct 7.</p>

<p>US armed forces deployed in Iraq and neighbouring country Syria have faced a surge in the number of attacks ever since then.</p>

<p>The Iraqi government accused the US-led anti-jihadist coalition of the strike and further called it "a blatant aggression" as well as "a dangerous escalation and assault".</p>

<p>"The Iraqi armed forces hold the forces of the international coalition responsible for this attack," Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani's office said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Washington has till now counted more than a hundred attacks that were aimed at the US targets in Syria and Iraq since mid-October 2023.</p>

Taking to Telegram, military officials said that after takeoffs were detected from the far northern Olenya airfield and southern Engels airbase, multiple Tupolev Tu-95MS bombers were present in Russia's airspace.</p>

Its November 2023 security report on the Indian Ocean on the threat comes amid this month's attack on two India-bound vessels M-V Chem Pluto and M-V Sai Baba. <p>The Indian Navy on Monday (Dec 25) said that MV Chem Pluto, carrying 21 Indians and one Vietnamese crew, which was earlier reported as attacked by a suspected drone on Saturday (Dec 23), reached Mumbai and was safely anchored at Outer Anchorage off India's financial capital.</p>

<p>On its arrival, the Indian Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team inspected the vessel to make a preliminary assessment of the type and nature of the attack.</p>

<p>"Analysis of the area of attack and debris found on the ship points towards a drone attack. However, further forensic and technical analysis will be required to establish the vector of attack, including type and amount of explosive used," the Indian Navy said in a statement.</p>

<p>"A Joint Investigation by various agencies has commenced on completion of the analysis by the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Team," the statement further added.</p>

<p>MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operation by her company-in-charge in Mumbai. The ship is scheduled to undergo mandatory checks by the various inspecting authorities before undertaking Ship to Ship (STS) transfer of cargo. This is likely to be followed by docking and repairs of the damaged portion of MV Chem Pluto, the Indian Navy said.</p>

<p>"No U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India," the statement said adding, "This is the seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping&nbsp;since&nbsp;2021.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>A maritime security firm, Ambrey, reportedly said that the ship was "Israel-affiliated" and was en route from Saudi Arabia to India. The Dutch company operating the vessel reportedly has connections to Israeli shipping tycoon Idan Ofer, The Wall Street Journal reported.</p>

The ICGS Vikram was deployed on the patrol of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone when it was directed towards the merchant ship in distress. All crew are safe which includes around 20 Indians.
